In this paper, a temperature sensor based on a polymer–silica heterogeneous integrated Mach–Zehnder interferometer (MZI) structure is proposed. The MZI structure consists of a polymer waveguide arm and a doped silica waveguide arm. Due to the opposite thermal optical coefficients of polymers and silica, the hybrid integrated MZI structure enhances the temperature sensing characteristics. The direct coupling method and side coupling method are introduced to reduce the coupling loss of the device. The simulation results show that the side coupling structure has lower coupling loss and greater manufacturing tolerance compared to the direct coupling structure. The side coupling loss for PMMA material-based devices, NOA material-based devices, and SU-8 material-based devices is 0.104 dB, 0.294 dB, and 0.618 dB, respectively. The sensitivity (S) values of the three hybrid devices are −6.85 nm/K, −6.48 nm/K, and −2.30 nm/K, which are an order of magnitude higher than those of an all-polymer waveguide temperature sensor. We calculated the temperature responsivity (RT) (FSR→∞) of the three devices as 13.16 × 10−5 K, 32.20 × 10−5 K, and 20.20 × 10−5 K, suggesting that high thermo-optic coefficient polymer materials and the hybrid integration method have a promising application in the field of on-chip temperature sensing. This work proposes a simple and affordable technology for the manufacturing of a miniature end-face fiber-optic temperature sensor based on a Fabry–Perot interferometer formed from a transparent UV-curable resin. For the manufactured working prototype of the sensor, the sensitivity and operating temperature range were determined, and the methods for their enhancement were proposed. Due to its small size, the proposed type of sensor can be used in high-precision and minimally invasive temperature measurements, in biology for microscale sample monitoring, and in medicine during operations using high-power lasers. In the field of precision machining, there are two widely used grinding methods for the same type of abrasive, namely, fixed abrasive grinding, and free abrasive grinding. In this paper, we utilized a self-developed rolling-sliding ratio controllable friction and wear testing machine to investigate the friction and wear properties of GCr15 bearing steel ground by fixed/free abrasive grinding under rolling and sliding motion, with varying abrasive particle sizes. The surface morphology and roughness of the ground bearing steel were observed and measured using a laser confocal microscope and white light interferometer. Results showed that under rolling and sliding conditions, the coefficient of friction for fixed abrasive grinding was higher than for free abrasive grinding. Under sliding conditions, the grinding efficiency of the fixed abrasive wheel is higher. However, in the case of wheel blockage, the grinding efficiency would significantly decrease. Conversely, the grinding efficiency of free abrasive grinding was observed to be stable throughout the grinding process. Under the same conditions of abrasive particle size in the sliding state, free abrasive grinding showed better surface integrity of bearing steel compared to fixed abrasive grinding. The toolbox to study the Universe grew on 14 September 2015 when the LIGO–Virgo collaboration heard a signal from two colliding black holes between 30 and 250 Hz. Since then, many more gravitational waves have been detected as detectors continue to increase sensitivity. However, the current and future interferometric detectors will never be able to detect gravitational waves below a few Hz due to oceanic activity on Earth. An interferometric space mission, the laser interferometer space antenna, will operate between 1 mHz and 0.1 Hz, leaving a gap in the decihertz band. To detect gravitational-wave signals also between 0.1 and 1 Hz, the Lunar Gravitational-wave Antenna will use an array of seismic stations. The seismic array will be deployed in a permanently shadowed crater on the lunar south pole, which provides stable ambient temperatures below 40 K. A cryogenic superconducting inertial sensor is under development that aims for fm/ √ Hz sensitivity or better down to several hundred mHz, and thermal noise limited below that value. Given the 10 6 m size of the Moon, strain sensitivities below 10 − 20 1/ √ Hz can be achieved. The additional cooling is proposed depending on the used superconductor technology. The inertial sensors in the seismic stations aim to make a differential measurement between the elastic response of the Moon and the inertial sensor proof-mass motion induced by gravitational waves. Here, we describe the current state of research toward the inertial sensor, its applications, and additional auxiliary technologies in the payload of the lunar gravitational-wave detection mission. In this study, we present a novel method for measuring the magnetic susceptibility of liquids using a Mach–Zehnder interferometer. The proposed technique employs a ring magnet to deform the liquid, while a laser beam passes through the liquid to measure the resulting interference pattern. The deformation of the liquid, caused by the known magnetic field of the ring magnet, is used to calculate the magnetic susceptibility. We provide a comprehensive theoretical framework, including the relevant equations and models, for analyzing the data obtained using this method. We compare the Mach–Zehnder interferometer method with other established techniques, highlighting its advantages and disadvantages. Our findings indicate that the Mach–Zehnder interferometer technique offers high accuracy, sensitivity, and potential applications in characterizing the magnetic properties of various liquid systems. Zinc finds a prominent metallic alternative for existing metallic bio-implant materials. Wettability significantly alters the corrosion resistance and cell adhesion of bio-metallic materials. The wettability of the metallic materials can be engineered by laser surface texturing (LST). In this work, nanosecond laser surface texturing experiments were conducted on the pure zinc substrate by varying the laser scan speed and texture pitch. Laser scan speeds were varied from 10 to 50 mm/s, and the texture pitch varied from 100 to 300 µm. A nanosecond 28 W Nd:YAG laser system was used with 1064 nm wavelength, repetition rate of 5 kHz, focal length of 234 mm, and pulse width of 2 ms. The white light interferometer (WLI) was utilized to explore the surface roughness of the textured samples, and the scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to investigate the surface morphology. The results revealed that LST on pure zinc follows the Weinzel model which enhances the hydrophobic nature of its surface. We review recent research in various types of optical quantum computing using liquid crystal devices. First, we have investigated Young's Interference experiment using self-aligned liquid crystal (LC) devices and a logical "NOT" operation is achieved. Second, numerical quantization of interfering small photons using an LC retarder is investigated. Third, a Mach–Zehnder interferometer with an optical phase control by a twisted nematic (TN) LC device was studied. Fourth, a basic experiment on 2-bit quantum calculations related to the Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm on a linear optical quantum computer using the LC device as a linear optical element was investigated. To examine the formation of tiger stripes (TS) phenomenon on the surface of the injection molding parts, a home‐made injection mold with a rapid heat exchange system and in situ measurement of pressure and temperature was designed and manufactured. Based on this special mold, the TS diagrams as a function of mold temperature and injection pressure for isotactic polypropylene (iPP) and its blend with a type of polyolefin elastomer (iPP/POE) were explored for the first time. It is found that there exists a critical mold temperature and a critical injection pressure for the TS appearance or disappearance in both systems. The critical temperatures of TS disappearance for iPP and iPP/POE are ~50 and ~ 120°C, respectively. As evidenced by the correlation between melt pressure drop and TS appearance, the wall slip mechanism is regarded as the main cause of TS formation. Compared with the critical shear stress of wall slip (σw) in totally molten PP, the lower σw value in this study further indicates that the wall slip could be facilitated by the crystallization of iPP during injection. Combined with white light interferometer, micro‐area x‐ray diffraction nanoindentation and scanning electron microscopy, it is demonstrated that the cloudy and glossy region of TS in pure iPP system could be distinguished by surface crystallinity. In this work, we experimentally analyzed and demonstrated the performance of an in-line Mach–Zehnder interferometer in the visible region, with an LED light source. The different waist diameter taper and asymmetric core-offset interferometers proposed used a single-mode fiber (SMF). The visibility achieved was V = 0.14 with an FSR of 23 nm for the taper MZI structure and visibilities of V = 0.3, V = 0.27, and V = 0.34 with FSRs of 23 nm, 17 nm, and 8 nm and separation lengths L of 2.5 cm, 4.0 cm, and 5.0 cm between the core-offset structure, respectively. The experimental investigation of the response to the temperature sensor yielded values from 50 °C to 300 °C; the sensitivity obtained was 3.53 a.u./°C, with  R 2  of 0.99769 and 1% every 1 °C in the transmission. For a range of 50 °C to 150 °C, 20.3 pm/°C with a  R 2  of 0.96604 was obtained. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We introduce a high-performance differential dilatometer based on an all-fiber Michelson interferometer at cryogenic temperature with 10−10 resolution in δL/L. It resolves the linear thermal expansion coefficient by measuring the oscillating changes of sample thickness and sample temperature with the interferometer and in situ thermometer, respectively. By measuring the linear thermal expansion coefficient α near the antiferromagnetic transition region of BaFe2As2 as a demonstration, we show that our dilatometer is able to measure thin samples with sub-pm-level length change resolution and mK-level temperature resolution. Despite the residual background thermal expansion of a few nm/K in the measurement results, our new dilatometer is still a powerful tool for the study of phase transition in condensed matter physics, especially has significant advantages in fragile materials with sub-100 μm thickness and being integrated with multiple synchronous measurements and tuning thanks to its extremely high resolution and contactless nature. Quantum mechanics has withstood every experimental test thus far. However, it relies on ad-hoc postulates which require experimental verification. Over the past decade there has been a great deal of research testing these postulates, with numerous tests of Born's rule for determining probabilities and the complex nature of the Hilbert space being carried out. Although these tests are yet to reveal any significant deviation from textbook quantum theory, it remains important to conduct such tests in different configurations and using different quantum states. Here we perform the first such test using coherent states of light in a three-arm interferometer combined with homodyne detection. Our proposed configuration requires additional assumptions, but importantly allows us to use quantum states which exist in a larger Hilbert space compared to previous tests. For testing Born's rule, we find that the third order interference is bounded to be κ = 0.002 ± 0.004 and for testing whether quantum mechanics is complex or not we find a Peres parameter of F = 1.0000 ± 0.0003 (F = 1 corresponds to the expected complex quantum mechanics). The distinctive features of the T-15MD tokamak microwave interferometer for measuring linearly integrated electron density, as well as the system for processing and recording its signals, are presented. The phase stability of microwave interferometer signals is analyzed. The results of measurements with a microwave interferometer during the first experimental campaign of the T-15MD tokamak are presented. The phase values were extracted by using an analog phase meter and post-processing of digitized microwave interferometer signals: an intermediate frequency signal and a local oscillator signal. One of the most effective ways to advance the performance of quantum computers and quantum sensors is to increase the number of qubits or quantum resources in the system. A major technical challenge that must be solved to realize this goal for trapped-ion systems is scaling the delivery of optical signals to many individual ions. In this paper we demonstrate an approach employing waveguides and multi-mode interferometer splitters to optically address multiple 171Yb+ ions in a surface trap by delivering all wavelengths required for full qubit control. Measurements of hyperfine spectra and Rabi flopping were performed on the E2 clock transition, using integrated waveguides for delivering the light needed for Doppler cooling, state preparation, coherent operations, and detection. We describe the use of splitters to address multiple ions using a single optical input per wavelength and use them to demonstrate simultaneous Rabi flopping on two different transitions occurring at distinct trap sites. This work represents an important step towards the realization of scalable integrated photonics for atomic clocks and trapped-ion quantum information systems. A promising strategy for scaling trapped-ion-based quantum technologies is to use fully integrated optical waveguides to deliver light to numerous ions at multiple sites. A high-precision catadioptric telescope such as a space-borne telescope is usually tested with interferometer to check the optical quality in assembly. The coarse and fine alignment of the telescope are mainly based on the information from the coordinate measuring machine and the fringe pattern of the interferometer, respectively. In addition, further fine-tuning can be achieved according to the variation in wavefront error and Zernike data. The issue is that the vast majority of the catadioptric telescopes contain plural lens surfaces which could produce unwanted ghost fringes, disturbing the wavefront measurement. Technically, off-axis installation to shift away ghost fringes from central interferogram could be acceptable in some cases. Nevertheless, in this paper, the source of ghost fringe in interferometric measurement for catadioptric telescopes is investigated with light path simulation, and a solution of reducing the f-number of the diverger lens is proposed to eliminate the ghost fringe disturbance. In recent years, a new generation of optical intensity interferometers has emerged, leveraging the existing infrastructure of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs). The MAGIC telescopes host the MAGIC-SII system (Stellar Intensity Interferometer), implemented to investigate the feasibility and potential of this technique on IACTs. After the first successful measurements in 2019, the system was upgraded and now features a real-time, dead-time-free, 4-channel, GPU-based correlator. These hardware modifications allow seamless transitions between MAGIC's standard very-high-energy gamma-ray observations and optical interferometry measurements within seconds. We establish the feasibility and potential of employing IACTs as competitive optical Intensity Interferometers with minimal hardware adjustments. The measurement of a total of 22 stellar diameters are reported, 9 corresponding to reference stars with previous comparable measurements, and 13 with no prior measurements. A prospective implementation involving telescopes from the forthcoming Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory's Northern hemisphere array, such as the first prototype of its Large-Sized Telescopes, LST-1, is technically viable. This integration would significantly enhance the sensitivity of the current system and broaden the UV-plane coverage. This advancement would enable the system to achieve competitive sensitivity with the current generation of long-baseline optical interferometers over blue wavelengths. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite its ubiquity in quantum computation and quantum information, a universally applicable definition of quantum entanglement remains elusive. The challenge is further accentuated when entanglement is associated with other key themes, e.g., quantum interference and quantum statistics. Here, we introduce two novel motifs that characterize the interplay of entanglement and quantum statistics: an 'entanglement pointer' and a 'statistics-induced entanglement entropy'. The two provide a quantitative description of the statistics-induced entanglement: (i) they are finite only in the presence of quantum entanglement underlined by quantum statistics and (ii) their explicit form depends on the quantum statistics of the particles (e.g., fermions, bosons, and anyons). We have experimentally implemented these ideas by employing an electronic Hong–Ou–Mandel interferometer fed by two highly diluted electron beams in an integer quantum Hall platform. Performing measurements of auto-correlation and cross-correlation of current fluctuations of the scattered beams (following 'collisions'), we quantify the statistics-induced entanglement by experimentally accessing the entanglement pointer and the statistics-induced entanglement entropy. Our theoretical and experimental approaches pave the way to study entanglement in various correlated platforms, e.g., those involving anyonic Abelian and non-Abelian states. Measuring quantum entanglement remains a demanding task. The authors introduce two functions to quantify entanglement induced by fermionic or bosonic statistics, in transport experiments. Optical interferometers are the main elements of interferometric sensing and measurement systems. Measuring their optical path difference (OPD) in real time and evaluating the measurement uncertainty are key to optimizing system noise and ensuring system consistency. With the continuous sinusoidal wavelength modulation of the laser, real-time OPD measurement of the main interferometer is achieved through phase comparison of the main and auxiliary interferometers. The measurement uncertainty of the main interferometer OPD is evaluated. It is the first evaluation of the impact of different auxiliary interferometer calibration methods on OPD measurements. A homodyne quadrature laser interferometer (HQLI) is used as the main interferometer, and a 3 × 3 interferometer is used as the auxiliary interferometer. The calibration of the auxiliary interferometer using optical spectrum analyzer scanning and ruler measurement is compared. The evaluation shows that the auxiliary interferometer is the most significant source of uncertainty and causes the total uncertainty to increase linearly with increasing OPD. It is proven that a high-precision calibration and large-OPD auxiliary interferometer can improve the real-time accuracy of OPD measurements based on the auxiliary interferometer. The scheme can determine the minimum uncertainty to optimize the system noise and consistency for vibration, hydroacoustic, and magnetic field measurements with OPDs of the ~m level. Cold rolling emulsion contains a variety of functional additives, which often exhibit complex interactions with each other. Sodium alkane sulfonate (SAS) is a common corrosion inhibitor used in cold rolling emulsions for temporary rust prevention. In this study, it was found that SAS would deteriorate the tribological properties of the emulsion. Emulsions containing SAS and different friction modifiers were prepared. Tribology tests were carried out on a four-ball friction and wear tester. White light interferometer was used to investigate the 3D morphology of the friction surface and wear volume. Microscopic morphology of friction surfaces was observed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The chemical activity and electrostatic potential of the molecules were calculated based on density functional theory (DFT). The adsorption energies of additives on metal surfaces were calculated via molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. The results indicate that the strong electrostatic force gives SAS an advantage in competitive adsorption with ester friction modifiers due to the positive charge on the metal surface. This results in the friction modifier not functioning properly and the tribological properties of the emulsion being significantly reduced. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The intricacies of rough surface contact are amplified by hyperelastic materials, primarily due to nonlinear enhancement caused by stress concentration. In previous studies, we proposed an incremental contact model for hyperelastic materials based on the tangent modulus and validated it through finite element simulations. This study proceeds with the experimental validation of the model. Initially, four hyperelastic rough surfaces were scanned and stitched together using a white light interferometer to obtain the whole surface topography. Subsequently, in situ optical interferometric techniques precisely measured the actual contact areas between these four samples and quartz glass, establishing the relationship between the load and contact area. Finally, by incorporating the surface topography into the incremental contact model for hyperelastic materials using profile theory, predictions of the relationship between load and contact area were made and compared with the experimental results. Significant agreement was found within nearly 90% of the relative contact area, which validated the model's efficacy. In this paper, a brake cylinder coating comprising a composite material of an Fe3Al and Cr3C2 mixed powder was prepared by adding laser cladding onto carbon structural steel. We studied the influence of process parameters on the microstructure and tribological properties of the cladding materials using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and 3D white light interferometer and wear tests. The influence of different processes on the morphology of the carbide strengthening phase was found to be relatively small with a Cr3C2 content of 15 wt.%. The carbides mainly exhibited a network structure in each group of cladding layers. The area of the network strengthening phase varied under different processes. Of the cladding layers formed with different processes, the scanning speed of the 0.003 m/s cladding layer had the lowest wear rate. When the laser power was too low or the powder feed rate was too high, unmelted Cr3C2 particles could be found in the cladding layer. During the wear process, the particles peeled off, causing severe abrasive wear. When the powder feeding rate was too low, more materials in the base material entered the cladding layer. This made the composition of the cladding layer similar to that of the grinding material, resulting in severe adhesive wear. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Immersion microscope objectives stand out for their large numerical aperture, which improves the optical resolution of imaging systems such as those used in microscopic interferometry. These objectives increase the gradient forces of a beam focused through them, forming an Optical Trap (OT). However, many studies on microscopic interferometry neglect the contributions of different optical materials in the system that are also exposed to laser radiation, perhaps simply assuming transparency. In this work, a Mach–Zehnder interferometer and an OT, which share several components (including the same oil immersion objective), were coupled. Here, the response of the interferometer to a progressive increase in the OT laser power, while the interferometer laser power remains constant, is reported. Changes in laser power affect the oil temperature, altering its refractive index and volume, which in turn causes a phase shifting on the transmitted wavefront. Optical phase analysis is applied in the three-dimensional measurement of the damage produced by the OT on a paint film. This study suggests that the refractive index variations in the immersion oil affect interferograms because they will then exhibit an additive phase term that must be considered in that final measurement. The direct detection of gravitational waves by ground-based optical interferometers has opened a new window in astronomy. Besides, the sensitivity of these linear detectors to the direction of arrival of an incoming gravitational wave is limited compared to current prospects of high-precision, space-based, astrometry. Indeed, advanced methods of differential relativistic astrometry offer a unique opportunity to overcome that situation. Here, we present a novel concept for a gravitational wave antenna that uses angles between close pairs of point-like sources as natural (angular) "arms" to characterise the very tiny variations in angular separations induced by a passing gravitational wave. The proposed new astrometric gravitational wave observable proves to be a powerful tool to substantially enhance the effect of gravitational waves of different strengths by exploiting optical resolution to the fullest. Then, by optically multiplexing three (or more) of such astrometric "arms", it would be also possible to pinpoint source directions to unprecedented levels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The detection of gas concentrations in harsh environments with high performance is an emerging research area. Ensuring that external factors do not affect the detection and that it is immune to electromagnetic interference are key factors in guaranteeing reliable gas detection in a variety of tough environments. Among all types of gas-sensing methods, photoacoustic (PA) methods based on optical interferometers offer high sensitivity, anti-electromagnetic interference capability, and non-magnetic saturation. This article first presents the basic principles and characteristics of the main optical interferometers, the PA effect, and the core technologies of PA gas-sensing methods. It then reviews advanced optical interferometer-based methods for PA gas sensing and summarizes their characteristics, including the heterodyne-based Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI), optical fiber-based MZI, Sagnac interferometer (SI)-based, diaphragm-based extrinsic Fabry-Perot (F-P) interferometer (EFPI), cantilever-based EFPI, cantilever-based Michelson interferometer (MI), difference-based MI, and membrane-less optical microphone–photoacoustic spectroscopy (MeoM–PAS) sensing methods. In particular, the MeoM–PAS methods for gas sensing are discussed in detail, as they offer a completely static measurement system and the separation of a PA gas cell from the measuring system for applications in complicated and adverse circumstances. The possibility of using an atom chip and a diffraction grating to form a compact magneto-optical trap for ytterbium atoms, which can be used to develop compact atomic interferometers and optical clocks based on ultracold atoms, has been studied. An experiment on the laser cooling of the 171Yb and 174Yb isotopes in a first‑stage magneto-optical trap has been carried out to determine initial requirements for the mentioned elements. The design of the atom chip forming a magnetic field gradient up to 60 G/cm has been calculated. The presence of phase diffusion noise may lead to the loss of quantum measurement advantages, resulting in measurement results that cannot beat the standard quantum limit (SQL). Squeezing is considered an effective method for reducing the detrimental effect of phase diffusion on a measurement. Reasonable use of squeezing can make a measurement exceed the SQL. The Mach–Zehnder (MZ) interferometer has been exploited as a generic tool for precise phase measurement. Describing the reduction in quantum advantage caused by phase diffusion in an MZ interferometer that can be mitigated by squeezing is not easy to handle analytically because the input state changes from a pure state to a mixed state after experiencing the diffusion noise in the MZ interferometer. We introduce a truncated MZ interferometer, a symmetrical structure that can achieve the same potential phase sensitivity as the conventional MZ interferometer. This scheme can theoretically explain how phase diffusion reduces phase estimation and why squeezing counteracts the presence of phase diffusion. Using the Gaussian property of the input state and the characteristic of Gaussian operation in the squeezing, the two orthogonal field quantities of the quantum state are squeezed and anti-squeezed to different degrees, and the analytic results are obtained. This result can beat the SQL and provide reliable theoretical guidance for the experiment. The truncated MZ interferometer is more straightforward to build and operate than the conventional MZ interferometer. Most laser diodes experience fluctuations in intensity, phase, and wavelength, predominantly due to heating from energy conversion to thermal energy and changing ambient temperatures. This study primarily focuses on countering the effects of temperature variations through the design and implementation of a laser diode temperature controller (LDTC) for the fiber optical interferometer system. Additionally, there are other contributing factors, including the injected current, noises, and acoustic disturbances, that play significant roles in these fluctuations. Despite these additional factors, our findings emphasize that temperature remains the principal contributor to these fluctuations. The LDTC developed in this work is cost-effective and rapidly responsive to temperature changes, ensuring precise control over the laser diode's temperature. The findings show the ability of this controller to maintain the temperature of a laser diode at a constant value with a precision (steady-state error) of 0.0013°C (0.0396°C without the laser diode) and an average fluctuation of 0.0567°C (0.0742°C without the laser diode). Furthermore, the study establishes a relationship between the length of the measurement object and temperature. In this work, we present an analytical method to achieve giant Kerr nonlinearity without absorption in a five-level atomic medium. By using iterative perturbation technique on density matrix equations, we have derived the analytical expressions of nonlinear susceptibility and Kerr nonlinear coefficient in the presence of spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) and relative phase between applied laser fields. It shows that, this five-level atomic medium exhibits multiple electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) at three different frequencies, at the same time, the Kerr nonlinear coefficient is enhanced around three transparent spectral regions; in each such EIT region appears a pair of positive–negative peaks of Kerr nonlinear coefficient. In particular, these nonlinear peaks are moved to the center of the EIT windows via SGC. This means that the Kerr nonlinear coefficient is enhanced with completely suppressed absorption at different transparency frequencies. Furthermore, the magnitude and the sign of the Kerr nonlinear coefficient are easily controlled according to the SGC strength, the coupling laser intensity, and the relative phase between applied laser fields. Such a giant nonlinear medium can be useful for photonic devices working in the resonant frequency region without absorption. As a typical application, this giant Kerr nonlinear material has been applied to an interferometer for the formation of optical bistability, and showed the appearance of OB at the resonant frequency with significantly reduced threshold intensity and OB width. In recent years, optical neural networks have attracted widespread attention, due to their advantages of high speed, high parallelism, high bandwidth, and low power consumption. Photonic unitary neural network is a kind of neural networks that utilize the principles of unitary matrices and photonics to perform computations. In this paper, we design a photonic unitary neural network based on Mach-Zehnder interferometer arrays. The results show that the network has a good performance on both triangular and circular binary classification datasets, where most of the data points are correctly classified. Interferometers used for high-precision spectroscopic measurements are considered. The choice of a holographic interferometer is supported because of it implements the spatial-spectral method of holographic interferometry. With this holographic interferometer one can measure in real time the displacements of the phase center of a coherent light flux over a wide dynamic range and record the measured data in digital form. Based on the mathematical relations elucidated by the authors in previous publications, and based on the results of experimental studies, we have been able to numerically estimate the sensitivity of a holographic interferometer to spatial movements of phase centers (focus points) of light fluxes—point light sources that form a holographic interferogram. We establish the dependence of the normalized level of light flux intensity in the central region of the holographic interferogram on the displacement of a real point light source along the normal to the plane of the Fourier hologram. From the results of mathematical simulation we show that the sensitivity of a holographic interferometer to the movements of a real point light source normal to the plane of the Fourier hologram depends on the optical circuit parameters of the holographic interferometer when exposing the hologram and on the measurement parameters. In this case, the sensitivity of a holographic interferometer to specific movements of a real point light source can only be estimated experimentally. We propose to increase the sensitivity of a holographic interferometer by using a thin converging lens in its optical design. A mathematical relation has been obtained and studied for the gain coefficient of the phase advance of a light flux with a spherical wavefront. Given the known parameters of the thin converging lens in the optical circuit, we can use this relationship to numerically estimate the increase in sensitivity of a holographic interferometer that implements the spatial-spectral method of holographic interferometry. It is shown that the sensitivity of the holographic interferometer to the displacement of an imaginary point light source normal to the plane of the Fourier hologram is 2.86 times greater than its sensitivity to the same movement of a real point light source. It has been established that the sensitivity of holographic interferometer with a volumetric Fourier hologram and a thin converging lens in its design can be increased by no less than an order of magnitude compared with the sensitivity of known optical interferometers. The results of assessing the sensitivity of the holographic interferometer implementing the spatial-spectral method of holographic interferometry to displacement of point sources of real and imaginary light fluxes, as well as the resulting ratio for the gain coefficient of the phase advance of the light flux by the thin converging lens, will be useful for high-precision measurements of linear and angular movement of objects, as well as in the construction of photonic device structures. From the results of the study based on the holographic interferometer, an experimental sample of an acousto-electric transducer has been developed and manufactured, which has high sensitivity over wide dynamic and frequency ranges and is intended for use in acoustic locations of unmanned aerial vehicles. Purpose: This study aims to clarify the influence mechanism of polishing solution type on the glazing evolution of fixed abrasive pad under different interfacial pressure conditions. Design/methodology/approach: The tribological experiments were carried out on the friction and wear machinery with W3-5 diamond fixed abrasive pad and quartz glass workpiece under three polishing solution types of five pressure conditions. The changes of surface morphology, porosity and hardness of fixed abrasive pad were detected by white light interferometer, optical microscope and shore hardness tester. Findings: The results showed that the glazed phenomenon of fixed abrasive pad is occurred after a certain time, which is more obvious with the increasing of interfacial pressures. The polishing solution type has a significant effect on the glazing time, although the glazed phenomenon is inevitable. The mechanism of it is that the micro-convex peaks on the surface of the fixed abrasive pad are easily wear, and the pores are blocked by the accumulation of waste debris generated during the experiment process. Thus, a smooth and high-density hard layer is formed on the surface of the fixed abrasive pad which induces the decreasing of the friction coefficient and surface roughness value. For selected polishing solution types, the wear rate of micro-convex peaks is different due to the corrosion action difference with polishing pad surface. We present a technique to observe stellar inteferograms, as well as the detailed analysis of those created by three bright stars: Betelgeuse, Rigel, and Sirius. It is shown that the atmospheric turbulence is responsible for the reduction of the long-exposure fringe visibility of the obtained interference patterns. By using different baselines in our interferometer, we are able to distinguish the decay of the visibility with the baseline, observe how different parameters such as the diameter or the distribution of the holes in our interferometer affect the pattern, and measure the atmospheric turbulence. The X-ray Talbot–Lau interferometer is a sensitive method for probing wavefront phase distribution and high-energy-density plasmas. In this study, we have quantitatively calculated the fringe visibility obtained using an X-ray cascaded Talbot–Lau interferometer (CTLI) with W-absorption gratings of different structural heights. A cascaded configuration with different W-absorption gratings was built experimentally to verify the validity of the calculation results. The relationship between the sensitivity of the interferometers and the duty ratio of the gratings is also discussed. Accurate and flexible form measurements for aspherical and freeform surfaces are in high demand, and non-null-test interferometric methods such as tilted-wave interferometry have gained attention as a promising response to this need. Interferometric methods, however, display ambiguities between the measurement of certain form errors and the misalignment of the measured specimen. Therefore, improved knowledge of the absolute measurement position of the specimen in relation to the interferometer setup may improve the form measurement result. In this work, we propose a concept that uses a white light interferometer to measure the absolute distance between a transparent specimen's surface and the interferometer's objective and present preparatory data to qualify the white light interferometer for the improvement of tilted-wave interferometer measurements. We have theoretically investigated the phase sensitivity of the hybrid interferometer with two coherent beams using the method of balance homodyne detection. The measurement device is a nonlinear–linear hybrid interferometer consisting of an optical parametric amplifier and a beam splitter. We prove that the phase sensitivity can beat the shot noise limit in the optimal conditions. Furthermore, we derive the quantum Cramér–Rao bound of the hybrid interferometer. The effects of transmission loss and detection loss on the measurement accuracy are discussed. The detection accuracy of this scheme is compared with that of the conventional SU (1,1) interferometer. Our results show that this scheme outperforms the conventional SU (1,1) interferometer scheme at high parametric strength. In this paper, we propose an all-fiber co-axial optical frequency-domain interferometer (OFDI) in a pulse-train mode with a sample rate of 9 kHz for measuring the vibrations in an internal structure without any contact. It was subjected to a range of 4.555 mm and had an accuracy level of 0.006 mm, as confirmed by a linear motion experiment. Due to the precise time synchronization for reducing the background light leakage and suppressing the dynamic fuzziness, the proposed OFDI could realize the dynamic absolute distance measurements of the vibration process under harmonic excitation with frequencies ranging from 200 Hz to 1800 Hz. The characteristic parameters of vibration could be analyzed using the acquired distance results. Furthermore, the OFDI system obtained the frequency conversion as the time under anharmonic periodic excitation with a sweeping rate of 3600 Hz/s. The measurement performance for the vibration velocity compared with the displacement interferometer system for any reflector (DISAR) was demonstrated in a harmonic excitation experiment. A kind of full-function two-sided optical bench interferometer (OBI) is designed to meet the practical requirements of the Taiji Program for space gravitational wave detection. The main optical paths are arranged on the A-side for transmission and interference, and other optical paths and electronic devices are placed on the B-side. According to the design scheme, we successfully constructed two OBIs by using hydrogen–oxygen catalytic stress-free bonding technology. When the OBI is installed and adjusted, the position and Angle error of the interference beam are controlled within 30 μm and 50 μrad through the self-designed precision mechanical clamping mechanism and beam position measuring device. The built OBI was placed on the vibration isolation platform in the vacuum tank for the stability test. The test results show that the noise of the OBI is less than 10 p m / √ H z in the frequency band of 0.1 Hz to 1 Hz, which meets the noise budget requirements of the Taiji Pathfinder in the middle- and high-frequency band. Average surface height and maximum amplitude can affect surface functions. In the industry, these parameters can be obtained based on profile measurements. However, variability in maximum profile height is high. A more stable parameter can be obtained from the results of the areal surface topography measurements as the average value of the parallel profiles. The aim of this study is to establish this parameter directly from the result of the areal surface texture by correcting the maximum surface height to material ratios in the range of 0.13–99.87%. This method was tested by measuring 100 surface topographies with a stylus profilometer and a white light interferometer. It can be utilized correctly for deterministic textures and random one- and two-process surfaces for which the correlation between neighboring profile ordinates is not very high. In other cases, the method should be modified. Employing this method, the maximum profile amplitude Pt and parameters characterizing the average profile height Pq, Pa, and the ratios Pq/Pa and Pp/Pt describing the shape of the profile ordinate distribution can be correctly estimated. Pq/Pa and Pp/Pt were more stable than the kurtosis Pku and skewness Psk. The corrected maximum height S±3σ can be adopted as a parameter that characterizes the areal surface texture as more stable than the maximum surface height St. Pq/Pa and Pp/Pt were more steady than kurtosis Pku and skewness Psk. The refractive index measurement of seawater has proven significance in oceanography, while an optical heterodyne interferometer is an important, highly accurate, tool used for seawater refractive index measurement. However, for practical seawater refractive index measurement, the refractive index of seawater needs to be monitored for long periods of time, and the influence of drift error on the measurement results for these cases cannot be ignored. This paper proposes a drift error compensation algorithm based on wavelet decomposition, which can adaptively separate the background from the signal, and then calculate the frequency difference to compensate for the drift error. It is suitable for unstable signals, especially signals with large differences between the beginning and the end, which is common in actual seawater refractive index monitoring. The authors identify that the primary cause of drift error is the frequency instability of the acousto-optic frequency shifter (AOFS), and the actual frequency difference was measured through experimentation. The frequency difference was around 0.1 Hz. Simulation experiments were designed to verify the effectiveness of the algorithm, and the standard deviation of the optical length of the results was on the scale of 10−8 m. Liquid refractive index measurement experiments were carried out in a laboratory, and the measurement error was reduced from 36.942% to 0.592% after algorithm processing. Field experiments were carried out regarding seawater refractive index monitoring, and the algorithm-processing results are able to match the motion of the target vehicle. The experimental data were processed with different algorithms, and, according to the comparison of the results, the proposed algorithm performs better than other existing drift error elimination algorithms. Vertical beam size measurements were carried out at Beijing Electron-Positron Collider II (BEPCII) using a phase grating and an absorption grating based on the Talbot effect. The transverse coherence of synchrotron radiation is closely related to beam size. Due to the partial coherence of the synchrotron radiation source, the coherence length can be calculated by measuring the visibility decay of interferograms recorded at different distances behind the gratings. A vertical beam size of 68.19 ± 2 mm was obtained based on the relationship between the coherence length and beam size at the 3W1 beamline of BEPCII. A comparison of the vertical emittance derived from the grating Talbot method and the synchrotron radiation visible light interferometer method was presented. The vertical emittances from the two methods are 1.41 nm rad and 1.40 nm rad, respectively. The 0.1% difference indicates that the grating Talbot method for beam size measurement is reliable. This technique has great potential for small beam size measurement of fourth-generation synchrotron radiation light sources, considering its small diffraction limitation and simple experimental setups. The description of the areal texture of the surface is more comprehensive than that of roughness profiles. Ball burnishing led to an improvement in surface quality. In this work, the changes in areal surface textures due to ball burnishing were studied. Three surfaces of steel, two after milling and one after grinding, were subjected to ball burnishing. In the burnishing process, the burnishing pressure and width were variable parameters. Surface topographies before and after burnishing were measured using a white light interferometer. Ball burnishing was found to lead to a decrease in surface amplitude. The highest relative reduction was 94%. The changes in roughness height were greater with a higher amplitude of the surface texture before burnishing. The hybrid parameters also decreased as a result of ball burnishing. The dynamic measurement of surface deformation with an axisymmetric profile at nanometer- to micrometer-scale is of great interest in understanding micromechanical and thermophysical dynamics. We propose a carrier optical vortex interferometer (COVI) to measure such surface deformation dynamically by segmentation demodulation of the petal-like interferogram that is produced by the coaxial superposition of conjugated p-radial order Laguerre–Gaussian beams. Specifically, a rotating chopper placed at the exit of the interferometer introduces a carrier frequency in the absence of surface deformation. A camera placed behind the chopper uses a multi-ring segmentation detection scheme to produce a Doppler shift relative to the carrier frequency at the radius of each ring in the presence of axisymmetric surface deformation. Locating the Doppler shifts gives the surface deformation velocities at those radii. Thus, the dynamic surface deformation profile can be obtained by integrating the velocities over time. We reveal the basic principles of the carrier frequency and the Doppler shifts in the COVI theoretically. As a proof-of-concept, an external force-induced axisymmetric mechanical surface deformation is measured dynamically to demonstrate the validity of the COVI. The results show that the measurement error of the surface deformation velocity is within (−2.1, 1.1 nm/s) for the velocity ranging from 20 to 86 nm/s. The lower limit of the measurable velocity can reach 20 nm/s. The measurement error of the surface deformation profile is less than 2.5 nm for the amplitude of the surface deformation of 500 nm. We investigate the response of the micromechanical field-effect transistors (MMFETs) to the impinging terahertz (THz) signals. The MMFET uses the microcantilevers (MC) as a mechanically floating gate and the movable mirror of the Michelson optical interferometer. The MC mechanical oscillations are transformed into optical signals and the MMFET operates as the detector of THz radiation with the optical output. We study the effects of rotations on a cold atom accelerometer onboard a Nadir pointing satellite. A simulation of the satellite attitude combined with a calculation of the phase of the cold atom interferometer allow us to evaluate the noise and bias induced by rotations. In particular, we evaluate the effects associated to the active compensation of the rotation due to Nadir pointing. Organic crystals are poised to be a potential alternative to conventional silicon and its derivatives due to their utilization as microscale photonic components like active and passive waveguides, ring‐resonators, modulators, directional couplers, add‐on filters, interferometers (IMs), and reconfigurable circuits. Among these, IMs are important for flexible organic photonic integrated circuits. Here, the design and synthesis of extremely flexible (E)‐1‐(((5‐bromopyridin‐2‐yl)imino)methyl)naphthalen‐2‐ol (BPyIN) crystals are demonstrated. The interactions stabilizing the crystal packing and crystal‐substrate adhesion dictate the elasticity and pseudo‐plasticity, respectively. The extremely flexible BPyIN crystals disclose bending geometry‐dependent optical modes in the fluorescence spectra. This understanding is extended for fabricating a fiber loop mirror (FLM)‐like geometry using a BPyIN single crystal. Mechanophotonics approach facilitates the integration of FLM‐like crystal with a doubly bent waveguide to construct a first‐of‐its‐kind IM. The light propagating path‐length‐dependent optical interference within the IM is established. These proof‐of‐principle experiments illustrate the usefulness of mechanophotonics to fabricate miniature photonic devices beyond the traditional fabrication approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The neutron optical Lloyd interferometer can serve as a potent experiment for probing fundamental physics beyond the standard models of particles and cosmology. In this article, we provide a full Green's function analysis of a Lloyd interferometer in the limit that the reflecting mirror extends to the screen. We consider two distinct situations: first, we will review the theoretical case of no external fields being present. Subsequently, we will analyze the case in which a gravitational field is acting on the neutrons. This paper presents the results of an investigation of direct laser writing on a titanium film with an antireflection capping silicon coating. Bi-layer films were deposited on fused silica substrates using an e-beam evaporation system. Modeling predicted that optical absorption for a bi-layer Si/Ti material can be increased by a factor of ~2 compared to a single-layer Ti film at 532 nm laser writing beam wavelength. It is experimentally proved that rate of thermochemical laser writing on Si/Ti films is at least 3 times higher than that on a single-layer Ti film with comparable thickness. The silicon layer was found to participate in the thermochemical reaction (silicide formation) under laser beam heating, which allows one to obtain sufficient position-dependent phase change (PDPC) of light reflected from exposed and unexposed areas. This results in much larger profile depth measured with a white light interferometer (up to 150 nm) than with an atomic force microscope (up to 25 nm). During direct laser writing on Si/Ti films, there is a broad range of writing beam power within which the PDPC and reflection coefficient for the exposed areas change insignificantly. The possibility of selective development of a thermochemically written pattern on a Ti film by removing the capping silicon layer on unexposed areas in a hot KOH solution is shown.
