As an integral part of the Gadara-Region-Project, a survey of the Wādī al-‘Arab region was conducted during the years 2009-2012, by the Biblical-Archaeological Institute Wuppertal and the German Protestant Institute for Archaeology in order to achieve a better understanding of the hinterland of the main study site Tall Zirāʿa and to provide answers concerning settlement pattern, trade relationships and the importance of sites throughout time.

Abstract

Sparsely vegetated bedrock slopes in deserts coincide with slope parameters, thus they have important implications on biological, chemical, hydrological and geomorphological processes. Spatial variations in these vegetation patterns, density and communities indicates on relatively humid habitats, which correspond with sinks for high runoff. Relations between the bedrock runoff generation and vegetation patterns may imply on the spatial locations of Byzantine – Early Muslim (400-1000 C.E.; 1600-1000 y BP) agriculture installations. These installations are widespread in the Negev Desert, Israel, utilized sophisticated runoff harvesting techniques by the ancient farmers. Applying a multi-disciplinary approach, we tested vegetation patterns as a precursor for runoff generation along bedrock slopes in the Negev Desert Highlands, and correlated them to the spatial distribution of the Byzantine – Early Muslim runoff agriculture installations. Integrating vegetation patterns, geological substrate data and bedrock-runoff generation data on a GIS model on a large scale (160 km2) of the Negev Highlands yields a synthetic potential runoff map. This map is a unique new product conducted for the first time during this study. Basing on it, runoff yield can be predicted for different scales, ranging from that of a single lithology slope to that of a basin of varying lithologies. Utilizing this methodology, we show that high correlation (80 %) exists between vegetation patterns and spatially located Byzantine – Early Muslim runoff-farming installations. This correlation turns the vegetation coverage as a reliable marker for predicting runoff yield in arid bedrock slopes and imply for stable arid climate in the past 1600 years in the Negev Desert.

Abstract

The EBONE (European Biodiversity Observation Network project) asked the Israel Nature and Parks Authority to test methodology correlating patterns of species distribution with habitat in arid regions. A test of this methodology was conducted at the Avdat LTER site in the Negev Desert. Four square kilometers were mapped using the EBONE system of structural habitat mapping. Samples of vegetation, reptile and arthropod communities were taken using stratified random sampling of the mapped habitat polygons. Habitat type correlated poorly with species richness, but correlated well with community composition across all the taxonomic groups. We also found that the correlation of species composition to habitat type coincided with a gradient of substrate texture, from fine silt, sand, gravel and stones to large boulders and bedrock outcrops.

Abstract

The identification of research questions with high relevance for biodiversity conservation is an important step towards designing more effective policies and management actions, and to better allocate funding among alternative conservation options. However, the identification of priority questions may be influenced by regional differences in biodiversity threats and social contexts, and to variations in the perceptions and interests of different stakeholders. Here we describe the results of a prioritization exercise involving six types of stakeholders from the Mediterranean biome, which includes several biodiversity hotspots spread across five regions of the planet (Europe, Africa, North and South America, and Australia). We found great heterogeneity across regions and stakeholder types in the priority topics identified and disagreement among the priorities of research scientists and other stakeholders. However, governance, climate change, and public participation issues were key topics in most regions. We conclude that the identification of research priorities should be targeted in a way that integrates the spectrum of stakeholder interests, potential funding sources and regional needs, and that further development of interdisciplinary studies is required. The key questions identified here provide a basis to identify priorities for research funding aligned with biodiversity conservation needs in this biome.

Abstract

As an integral part of the Gadara-Region-Project, a survey of the Wādī al-'Arab region was conducted during the years 2009-2012, by the Biblical-Archaeological Institute Wuppertal and the German Protestant Institute for Archaeology in order to achieve a better understanding of the hinterland of the main study site Tall Zirā'a and to provide answers concerning settlement pattern, trade relationships and the importance of sites throughout time. On the basis of this survey we used ecological approaches to see what correlation might exist between archaeological sites and habitat. Since more than half the sites in this survey had Roman occupation, we asked what difference, if any, was there in the distribution of Roman sites compared to previous occupations. A comparison was made of "new" Roman sites (those not previously occupied in the Hellenistic period) with those that had both Roman and Hellenistic occupation. Open water, riverine habitats, and large archaeological sites all seemed connected. In addition, analysis indicated a correlation of older (more successful or established?) sites with open water and new Roman sites were less related to water. We knew that Roman engineering both of cistern systems and aqueducts opened new areas (such as plateaus) for settlement and exploitation. Abstract

It has long been recognized that of the world's five Mediterranean heathland regions, those in Australia (the kwongan) and in South Africa (the fynbos) are the most diverse. The reasons for this however, remain unresolved. We propose that Mediterranean heathland diversity is influenced by how species respond to fire. Fires can occur frequently in Mediterranean heathlands, and obligate reseeders (those species unable to resprout following fire) will consequently have shorter generation times than resprouters and potentially faster speciation rates. High diversity heathlands should therefore be composed of a higher proportion of reseeding species than low diversity heathlands, a prediction confirmed by comparing kwongan and fynbos vegetation to Californian chaparral and Israeli maquis. We speculate that in the kwongan and fynbos, substrate infertility has rendered resprouting too expensive metabolically, promoting obligate reseeders that are capable of elevated rates of speciation.

Abstract

Wetlands are among the most important and endangered of Mediterranean landscapes. The wetlands of Israel have enhanced importance as resting stops on the seasonal route of birds migrating between Eurasia and Africa. For these reasons, two major wetland nature reserves, En Afeq and Hula, are internationally recognized Ramsar Convention sites. Rapidly dropping water levels and reduced water quality, urban and agricultural encroachment, and heavy tourism pressure all threaten these fragile systems. A joint effort of Dutch and Israeli conservationists and ecologists studied both sites in an effort to apply scenario modeling as a tool for conservation management, as used today in the Netherlands. Our conclusion was that the Israeli sites are far more unstable than comparable Dutch wetlands, making scenario modeling difficult and perhaps irrelevant. Conservation management can do little more in these sites than to maximize water quality and quantity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

40. Comparison of certain Nylsvley soils using a bioassay technique

Abstract

In terms of the growth of radish and tef seedlings, differences in soil properties identified in a previous pedological study are quantified on a number of levels or scales. Faster growth was generally obtained with plants grown in soil from microphyllous thorn savanna than from broad·leaf savanna. Similarly, faster growth was recorded for plants grown in soil from under-tree subhabitats than from inter-tree subhabitats. The concentrations of 16 mineral elements in the plant tissue are presented. It is not known whether the differences reported are due solely to differences in their availability or concentration in the soil.

Here we describe the results of a prioritization exercise involving six types of stakeholders from the Mediterranean biome, which includes several biodiversity hotspots spread across five regions of the planet (Europe, Africa, North and South America, and Australia). We found great heterogeneity across regions and stakeholder types in the priority topics identified and disagreement among the priorities of research scientists and other stakeholders. However, governance, climate change, and public participation issues were key topics in most regions. We conclude that the identification of research priorities should be targeted in a way that integrates the spectrum of stakeholder interests, potential funding sources and regional needs, and that further development of interdisciplinary studies is required. The key questions identified here provide a basis to identify priorities for research funding aligned with biodiversity conservation needs in this biome.
