1. A Performance Increment Strategy for Semantic Segmentation of Low-Resolution Images from Damaged Roads

Abstract

Autonomous driving needs good roads, but 85% of Brazilian roads have damages that deep learning models may not regard as most semantic segmentation datasets for autonomous driving are high-resolution images of well-maintained urban roads. A representative dataset for emerging countries consists of low-resolution images of poorly maintained roads and includes labels of damage classes; in this scenario, three challenges arise: objects with few pixels, objects with undefined shapes, and highly underrepresented classes. To tackle these challenges, this work proposes the Performance Increment Strategy for Semantic Segmentation (PISSS) as a methodology of 14 training experiments to boost performance. With PISSS, we reached state-of-the-art results of 79.8 and 68.8 mIoU on the Road Traversing Knowledge (RTK) and Technik Autonomer Systeme 500 (TAS500) test sets, respectively. Furthermore, we also offer an analysis of DeepLabV3+ pitfalls for small object segmentation.

Abstract

The electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) is a quantum interference phenomenon capable of altering the optical response of a medium, turning an initially opaque atomic sample into transparent for a given radiation field (probe field) upon the incidence of a second one (control field). EIT presents several applications, for instance, considering an atomic system trapped inside an optical cavity, its linewidth can be altered by adjusting the control field strength. For the single-atom regime, we show that there is a fundamental limit for narrowing the cavity linewidth, since quantum fluctuations cannot be disregarded in this regime. With this in mind, in this work we also investigate how the linewidth of an optical cavity behaves for different numbers of atoms trapped inside it, which shows a quantum signature in a strong atom-field coupling regime. 3. Effects of position-dependent mass (PDM) on the bound-state solutions of a massive spin-0 particle subjected to the Yukawa potential

Abstract

With the advent of Albert Einstein's theory of special relativity, Klein and Gordon made the first attempt to elevate time to the status of a coordinate in the Schr\"odinger equation. In this study, we graphically discuss the eigenfunctions and eigenenergies of the Klein-Gordon equation with a Yukawa-type potential (YP), within a position-dependent mass (PDM) framework. We conclude that the PDM leads to the equivalence of the positive ($E^+$) and negative ($E^-$) solution states at low energies. We observe that in the energy spectrum as a function of $\eta$ (YP intensity factor), the PDM can induce gap closure at the critical point where $E^+$ and $E^-$ become imaginary. In the spectrum as a function of $\alpha$ (YP shielding factor), it can compel the energies to be zero at $\alpha=0$, instead of being equal to $(m_0c^2)$ as in the invariant mass case.

Abstract

BackgroundDrugs taken during pregnancy can affect maternal and child health outcomes, but few studies have compared the safety and virological efficacy of different antiretroviral therapy (ART) regimens. We report the primary safety outcomes from enrolment up to 50 weeks post partum and a secondary virological efficacy outcome at 50 weeks post partum of three commonly used ART regimens for HIV-1.MethodsIn this multicentre, open-label, randomised, controlled, phase 3 trial, we enrolled pregnant women aged 18 years or older with confirmed HIV-1 infection at 14-28 weeks of gestation. Women were enrolled at 22 clinical research sites in nine countries (Botswana, Brazil, India, South Africa, Tanzania, Thailand, Uganda, the USA, and Zimbabwe). Participants were randomly assigned (1:1:1) to one of three oral regimens: dolutegravir, emtricitabine, and tenofovir alafenamide; dolutegravir, emtricitabine, and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate; or efavirenz, emtricitabine, and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate. Up to 14 days of antepartum ART before enrolment was permitted. Women with known multiple gestation, fetal anomalies, acute significant illness, transaminases more than 2·5 times the upper limit of normal, or estimated creatinine clearance of less than 60 mL/min were excluded. Primary safety analyses were pairwise comparisons between ART regimens of the proportion of maternal and infant adverse events of grade 3 or higher up to 50 weeks post partum. Secondary efficacy analyses at 50 weeks post partum included a comparison of the proportion of women with plasma HIV-1 RNA of less than 200 copies per mL in the combined dolutegravir-containing groups versus the efavirenz-containing group. Analyses were done in the intention-to-treat population, which included all randomly assigned participants with available data. This trial was registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT03048422.FindingsBetween Jan 19, 2018, and Feb 8, 2019, we randomly assigned 643 pregnant women to the dolutegravir, emtricitabine, and tenofovir alafenamide group (n=217), the dolutegravir, emtricitabine, and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate group (n=215), and the efavirenz, emtricitabine, and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate group (n=211). At enrolment, median gestational age was 21·9 weeks (IQR 18·3-25·3), median CD4 count was 466 cells per μL (308-624), and median HIV-1 RNA was 903 copies per mL (152-5183). 607 (94%) women and 566 (92%) of 617 liveborn infants completed the study. Up to the week 50 post-partum visit, the estimated probability of experiencing an adverse event of grade 3 or higher was 25% in the dolutegravir, emtricitabine, and tenofovir alafenamide group; 31% in the dolutegravir, emtricitabine, and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate group; and 28% in the efavirenz, emtricitabine, and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate group (no significant difference between groups). Among infants, the estimated probability of experiencing at least one adverse event of grade 3 or higher by postnatal week 50 was 28% overall, with small and non-statistically significant differences between groups. By postnatal week 50, 14 infants whose mothers were in the efavirenz-containing group (7%) died, compared with six in the combined dolutegravir groups (1%). 573 (89%) women had HIV-1 RNA data available at 50 weeks post partum: 366 (96%) in the dolutegravir-containing groups and 186 (96%) in the efavirenz-containing group had HIV-1 RNA less than 200 copies per mL, with no significant difference between groups.InterpretationSafety and efficacy data during pregnancy and up to 50 weeks post partum support the current recommendation of dolutegravir-based ART (particularly in combination with emtricitabine and tenofovir alafenamide) rather than efavirenz, emtricitabine, and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate, when started in pregnancy.FundingNational Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, and the National Institute of Mental Health.

Abstract

Wormholes (WH) require negative energy, and therefore an exotic matter source. Since Casimir energy is negative, it has been speculated as a good candidate to source that objects a long time ago. However only very recently a full solution for $D = 4$ has been found by Garattini, thus the Casimir energy can be a source of traversable WHs. In the manuscript published by the authors, we show that this solution is possible for all space-time of dimension $D > 3$. Recently, Garattini sought to analyze the effects of Yukawa-type terms on shape functions and obtained promising results. However, it assumes reasonably questionable premises when establishing a non-homogeneity in the Equation of State, when assuming a fixation between the constants that is only observed in the usual model and when considering the Zero Tidal Condition, not observed in Casimir's wormholes. In this work, we study the effects generated by Yukawa-type corrective factors on traversable wormhole solutions generated by Casimir energy without assuming such premises. We observe that, in addition to being possible to build traversable wormholes that satisfy all the necessary conditions, it is possible to obtain an adequate fixation of the constants in order to recover the standard case without a double limit. It was observed that, in the global and constant cases, it is possible to set a value in the shielding parameter that makes the wormhole generate a repulsive gravitational force. Abstract

Coral reef science is a fast-growing field propelled by the need to better understand coral health and resilience to devise strategies to slow reef loss resulting from environmental stresses. Key to coral resilience are the symbiotic interactions established within a complex holobiont, i.e. the multipartite assemblages comprising the host coral organism, endosymbiotic dinoflagellates, bacteria, archaea, fungi, and viruses. Tara Pacific is an ambitious project built upon the experience of previous Tara Oceans expeditions, and leveraging state-of-the-art sequencing technologies and analyses to dissect the biodiversity and biocomplexity of the coral holobiont screened across most archipelagos spread throughout the entire Pacific Ocean. Here we detail the Tara Pacific workflow for multi-omics data generation, from sample handling to nucleotide sequence data generation and deposition. This unique multidimensional framework also includes a large amount of concomitant metadata collected side-by-side that provide new assessments of coral reef biodiversity including micro-biodiversity and shape future investigations of coral reef dynamics and their fate in the Anthropocene.

28. Exponentially small quantum correction to conductance

Abstract

When time-reversal symmetry is broken, the average conductance through a chaotic cavity, from an entrance lead with $N_1$ open channels to an exit lead with $N_2$ open channels, is given by $N_1N_2/M$, where $M=N_1+N_2$. We show that, when tunnel barriers of reflectivity $\gamma$ are placed on the leads, two correction terms appear in the average conductance, and that one of them is proportional to $\gamma^{M}$. Since $M\sim \hbar^{-1}$, this correction is exponentially small in the semiclassical limit. Surprisingly, we derive this term from a semiclassical approximation, generally expected to give only leading orders in powers of $\hbar$. Even though the theory is built perturbatively both in $\gamma$ and in $1/M$, the final result is exact., Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

We propose a scheme to dissipatively produce steady-state entanglement in a two-qubit system, via an interaction with a bosonic mode. The system is driven into a stationary entangled state, while we compensate the mode dissipation by injecting energy via a coherent pump field. We also present a scheme which allows us to adiabatically transfer all the population to the desired entangled state. The dynamics leading to the entangled state in these schemes can be understood in analogy with electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP), respectively., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

We consider the problem of electronic quantum transport through ballistic mesoscopic systems with chaotic dynamics, connected to a three-terminal architecture in which one of the terminals has a tunnel barrier. Using a semiclassical approximation based on matrix integrals, we calculate several transport statistics, such as average and variance of conductance, average shot-noise power, among others, that give access to the extreme quantum regime (small channel numbers in the terminal) for broken and intact time-reversal symmetry, which the traditional random matrix approach does not access. Abstract

We bring together the semiclassical approximation, matrix integrals and the theory of symmetric polynomials in order to solve a long standing problem in the field of quantum chaos: to compute transport moments when tunnel barriers are present and the number of open channels, $M$, is small. In contrast to previous approaches, ours is non-perturbative in $M$; instead, we arrive at an explicit expression in the form of a power series in the barrier's reflectivity, whose coefficients are rational functions of $M$. For general moments we must require that the barriers are equal and time reversal symmetry is broken, but for conductance we treat the general situation. Our method accounts for exponentially small non-perturbative terms that were not accessible to previous semiclassical approaches. 38. Highly sensitive controllability of optical bistability in three-level atomic systems

Abstract

We theoretically investigate the optical bistability phenomenon in an ensemble of $N$ non-interacting three-level atoms trapped inside an optical cavity. The atoms are in a $\Lambda$-level configuration, where one atomic transition is coupled by a cavity mode, while the other one is coupled by a classical field. In addition, we consider a pumping field driving the cavity mode. With this system, we are able to observe new kinds of hysteresis, while scanning either the frequency of the pumping field or the Rabi frequency (intensity) of the control field. We show that they can be highly controllable via external parameters of the system, achieving very narrow widths, thus being very useful for building new devices, such as small fluctuation detectors in either frequency or intensity of laser fields., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures

39. Automatic Subject-Based Contextualisation of Programming Assignment Lists

Abstract

As programming must be learned by doing, introductory programming course learners need to solve many problems, e.g., on systems such as 'Online Judges'. However, as such courses are often compulsory for non-Computer Science (nonCS) undergraduates, this may cause difficulties to learners that do not have the typical intrinsic motivation for programming as CS students do. In this sense, contextualised assignment lists, with programming problems related to the students' major, could enhance engagement in the learning process. Thus, students would solve programming problems related to their academic context, improving their comprehension of the applicability and importance of programming. Nonetheless, preparing these contextually personalised programming assignments for classes for different courses is really laborious and would increase considerably the instructors'/monitors' workload. Thus, this work aims, for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, to automatically classify the programming assignments in Online Judges based on students' academic contexts by proposing a new context taxonomy, as well as a comprehensive pipeline evaluation methodology of cutting edge competitive Natural Language Processing (NLP). Our comprehensive methodology pipeline allows for comparing state of the art data augmentation, classifiers, beside NLP approaches. The context taxonomy created contains 23 subject matters related to the non-CS majors, representing thus a challenging multi-classification problem. We show how even on this problem, our comprehensive pipeline evaluation methodology allows us to achieve an accuracy of 95.2%, which makes it possible to automatically create contextually personalised program assignments for non-CS with a minimal error rate (4.8%). Abstract

In this work, deep learning techniques for brain age prediction from magnetic resonance images are investigated, aiming to assist in the identification of biomarkers of the natural aging process. The identification of biomarkers is useful for detecting an early-stage neurodegenerative process, as well as for predicting age-related or non-age-related cognitive decline. Two techniques are implemented and compared in this work: a 3D Convolutional Neural Network applied to the volumetric image and a 2D Convolutional Neural Network applied to slices from the axial plane, with subsequent fusion of individual predictions. The best result was obtained by the 2D model, which achieved a mean absolute error of 3.83 years. -- Neste trabalho s\~ao investigadas t\'ecnicas de aprendizado profundo para a predi\c{c}\~ao da idade cerebral a partir de imagens de resson\^ancia magn\'etica, visando auxiliar na identifica\c{c}\~ao de biomarcadores do processo natural de envelhecimento. Soon later Alencar et al [2] have shown, that this is not true in D = 3. In this paper, we show that Casimir energy can be a source of the Morris-Thorne WH for all spacetime with D > 3. Finally, we add the cosmological constant and find that for D = 3 Casimir WHs are possible, however, the space must always being AdS. Abstract

While protein conformational heterogeneity plays an important role in many aspects of biological function, including ligand binding, its impact has been difficult to quantify. Macromolecular X-ray diffraction is commonly interpreted with a static structure, but it can provide information on both the anharmonic and harmonic contributions to conformational heterogeneity. Here, through multiconformer modeling of time- and space-averaged electron density, we measure conformational heterogeneity of 743 stringently matched pairs of crystallographic datasets that reflect unbound/apo and ligand-bound/holo states. When comparing the conformational heterogeneity of side chains, we observe that when binding site residues become more rigid upon ligand binding, distant residues tend to become more flexible, especially in non-solvent-exposed regions. Among ligand properties, we observe increased protein flexibility as the number of hydrogen bonds decreases and relative hydrophobicity increases. Across a series of 13 inhibitor-bound structures of CDK2, we find that conformational heterogeneity is correlated with inhibitor features and identify how conformational changes propagate differences in conformational heterogeneity away from the binding site. Collectively, our findings agree with models emerging from nuclear magnetic resonance studies suggesting that residual side-chain entropy can modulate affinity and point to the need to integrate both static conformational changes and conformational heterogeneity in models of ligand binding.

50. Sensitivity of electromagnetically induced transparency to light-mediated interactions

Abstract

Here we present a microscopic model that describes the Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) phenomenon in the multiple scattering regime. We consider an ensemble of cold three-level atoms, in a $\Lambda$ configuration, scattering a probe and a control field to the vacuum modes of the electromagnetic field. By first considering a scalar description of the scattering, we show that the light-mediated long-range interactions that emerge between the dipoles narrow the EIT transparency window for increasing densities and sample sizes. For a vectorial description, we demonstrate that near-field interacting terms can critically affect the atomic population transfer in the Stimulated Raman Adiabatic Passage (STIRAP). This result points out that standard STIRAP-based quantum memories in cold atomic ensembles would not reach high enough efficiencies for quantum information processing applications even in dilute regimes., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures
