Background/Aim: Rosmarinus officinalis L. (R. officinalis) is an aromatic medicinal species with important nutraceutical potential, having rosmarinic acid (RA) as one of its main metabolites. The present study aims to evaluate the effects of an extract obtained from the leaves of this species and of its main metabolite in improving the streptozotocin-induced damage of hearts and aorta of diabetic rats. Methods: The leaves of the species were used to obtain a hydroethanolic extract, which was analyzed using the LC/MS method. Diabetes mellitus was induced by intraperitoneal streptozotocin administration in rats. After two weeks, oxidative stress parameters were evaluated from the heart and aorta homogenates. NOS3, AMPK, and adiponectin levels were quantified using ELISA tests, and thoracic aorta rings were isolated for contractility evaluation in the organ bath. Phospho-NF-κB, NRF2, HIF1 alfa, iNOS, and glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) quantification were performed using the Western blot technique. Results: Carnosic acid, together with rosmarinic acid, were proven to be the main metabolites identified in the composition of the tested extract. Administration of the extract and of RA improved the relaxation response to acetylcholine and the redox status, with the reduction in malondialdehyde (MDA), nitric oxide synthase 3 (NOS 3), AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), adiponectin, reduced (GSH) and oxidized glutathione (GSSG) levels, and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. RA significantly enhanced the expression of HIF 1α, NRF2, and pNFkB in the heart. Conclusions: Administration of the R. officinalis extract and of RA-alleviated oxidative stress, proving vascular and cardiac antioxidant properties in the hearts and aorta of diabetic rats. Capsella bursa-pastoris Medik. (CBP) is a species with antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anticancer, and hepatoprotective effects. We have chosen to study this species because, although it is a common plant with a distinctive fruit appearance, its effects are not fully understood. The aim of this study was to characterize the histoanatomy of the vegetative, reproductive organs and to characterize CBP extracts in terms of bioactive compounds and its antioxidant capacity. This study investigated the quantitative chemical composition of this species using the HPLC method, revealing the total content in polyphenols, flavonoids, and anthocyanins, and investigated the antioxidant potential through fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP assay), cupric ion (Cu2+) reduction, (CUPRAC assay), and a free radical scavenging method (DPPH). Our results show that CBP is a rich source of flavonoids, mainly from the extract obtained from the fruits; it has an antioxidant capacity, with the highest values being obtained from mature flowers and ripe fruits. Of the active principles, the highest amounts, according to HPLC determinations, were obtained in flowers and are represented by hyperoside. Background: The use of natural hepatoprotective remedies represents an important path in modern phytotherapy. Objectives: In this context, our research aims to evaluate the phytochemical composition and the hepatoprotective and oxidative stress reduction potential of an Arctium tomentosum Mill. root extract. Methods: The phenolic profile of the tested extract, prepared by the subcritical fluid-assisted method were qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed by spectrophotometrical and HPLC/DAD/ESI methods. In vitro antioxidant capacity was assessed using DPPH and FRAP assays. Hepatoprotective activity of the extract was assessed on a model of CCl4 experimentally induced hepatotoxicity in mice. Results: Phytochemical assays revealed the presence of important polyphenols, such as chlorogenic acid (17.20 ± 0.65 μg/mL) and acacetin 7-O-glucoside (56.80 ± 1.66 μg/mL). In vitro, the tested extract exhibited a significant oxidative stress reduction capacity, while in vivo it showed a dose-dependent hepatoprotective effect indicated by an improvement in plasma proteins profile and down-regulation of plasma transaminase activity (ALAT, ASAT, GGT). In liver tissue, the extract partially restored the activity of GPx, CAT, and SOD and attenuated lipid peroxidation. The protective effect of the A. tomentosum root extract was supported by the alleviation of histological injuries of the liver (centrilobular necrosis, granulocytic infiltrate, and fibrosis). Conclusions: The A. tomentosum subcritical fluid-assisted root extract proved to be able to provide a significant hepatoprotective effect mainly through an antioxidant mechanism. Introduction: Natural products represent a gold mine for scientists looking for compounds for the treatment of health problems and diseases with their different biological and pharmacological activities. However, recent research is focused on finding natural sources of antioxidants.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is known as the primary and most common cause of dementia in the middle-aged and elderly population worldwide. Chemical analyses of B. pendula leaf extract (BPE), performed using spectrophotometric and chromatographic methods (LC/MS), revealed high amounts of polyphenol carboxylic acids (gallic, chlorogenic, caffeic, trans-p-coumaric, ferulic, and salicylic acids), as well as flavonoids (apigenin, luteolin, luteolin-7-O-glucoside, naringenin, hyperoside, quercetin, and quercitrin). Four groups of Wistar rats were used in this experiment (n = 7/group): control (untreated), Aβ1-42 (2 μg/rat intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.), Aβ1-42 + BPE (200 mg/Kg b.w.), and DMSO (10 μL/rat). On the first day, one dose of Aβ1-42 was intracerebroventricularly administered to animals in groups 2 and 3. Subsequently, BPE was orally administered for the next 15 days to group 3. On the 16th day, behavioral tests were performed. Biomarkers of brain oxidative stress Malondialdehyde (MDA), (Peroxidase (PRx), Catalase (CAT), and Superoxid dismutase (SOD) and inflammation (cytokines: tumor necrosis factor -α (TNF-α), Interleukin 1β (IL-1β), and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX 2)) in plasma and hippocampus homogenates were assessed. Various protein expressions (Phospho-Tau (Ser404) (pTau Ser 404), Phospho-Tau (Ser396) (pTau Ser 396), synaptophysin, and the Nuclear factor kappa B (NFkB) signaling pathway) were analyzed using Western blot and immunohistochemistry in the hippocampus. The results show that BPE diminished lipid peroxidation and neuroinflammation, modulated specific protein expression, enhanced the antioxidant capacity, and improved spontaneous alternation behavior, suggesting that it has beneficial effects in AD. The Hawthorn and Olive are known from ancient time as phytotherapics with beneficial effect on heart and circulatory system, decreasing or regulating the blood pressure. By HPLC analysis were identified polyphenols with proved effect on angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE), the key compound of blood pressure regulation through renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. The chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, luteolin, quercitrin and even hyperosid, have the structural elements to block the active center of ACE. Due by the fact that these compounds are in significant quantities, we can conclude that these phyto- and gemmotherapic extracts's normo- or hypotensive effect is done also by the mechanism of ACE inhibition. Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) is a great concern worldwide. New drugs are continuously being developed and combined in order to manage the symptoms and treatment of ulcerative colitis (UC). Moreover, studies show a new approach on plant derived extracts to be used in the treatment of IBD, being less invasive and having less secondary effects. Our aim was to investigate the COX-2 activity level in colonic tissue, through the immunohistochemistry (IHC) technique, and thus prove the anti-inflammatory effect of Thuja occidentalis mother tincture (MT) in oral administration in corresponding doses (5, 25, and 50 mg/kg of body weight). The intra-rectal administration of TNBS resulted in an increase in cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression in comparison to control. The IHC results showed that the expression of COX-2 inflammatory marker decreased significantly following the oral administration of three doses of T. occidentalis MT (5, 25, and 50 mg/kg of body weight), in dose dependent manner.
