Search

Earth and other rocky bodies in the inner Solar System are significantly depleted in carbon compared to the Sun and interstellar medium (ISM) dust. Observations indicate that over half of carbon in the ISM and comets is in refractory forms, like amorphous hydrocarbons and complex organics, which can be building blocks of rocky bodies. While amorphous hydrocarbons are destroyed by photolysis and oxidation, radial transport of solid particles can limit carbon depletion, except when complex organics, which are less refractory, are the main carbon source. We aim to identify conditions for severe carbon depletion in the inner Solar System by introducing more realistic factors: differences in stickiness between icy and silicate particles, and high-temperature regions in the disk's upper optically-thin layer, which were not considered in previous studies. We perform a 3D Monte Carlo simulation of radial drift and turbulent diffusion in a steady accretion disk, incorporating ice evaporation/re-condensation, photolysis/oxidation of hydrocarbons in the upper layer, and pyrolysis of complex organics. Our results show that the carbon fraction drops by two orders of magnitude inside the snow line under two conditions: i) silicate particles are much less sticky than icy particles, leading to a rapid decline in icy pebble flux while silicates accumulate inside the snow line, and ii) high-temperature regions in the disk's upper layer stir silicate particles into UV-exposed areas. These conditions reproduce carbon depletion patterns consistent with observations and allow for diverse carbon fractions in rocky bodies. We report a significant enhancement of superconducting transition temperature ($\textit{T}_\textrm{c}$) of transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) superconductor $\textrm{NbTe}_2$ from 0.56 K to 2.8 K. Detailed x-ray structure analysis reveals that our $\textit{T}_\textrm{c}$-enhanced sample has an anisotropic lattice distortion inducing ~1% expansion of the unit cell volume and multi-domain formation in the $\textit{ab}$ planes. Despite the unit cell expansion, the distorted 1T structure, closely related to the charge density wave (CDW) order in this material, persists. Hall measurements show almost identical behaviors for both samples indicating that electronic structure does not change much due to the unit cell expansion. These results suggest that the CDW still coexists with the enhanced superconductivity unlike the other TMD superconductors.

A search for proton decay into $e^+/\mu^+$ and a $\eta$ meson has been performed using data from a 0.373 Mton$\cdot$year exposure (6050.3 live days) of Super-Kamiokande. Compared to previous searches this work introduces an improved model of the intranuclear $\eta$ interaction cross section, resulting in a factor of two reduction in uncertainties from this source and $\sim$10\% increase in signal efficiency. No significant data excess was found above the expected number of atmospheric neutrino background events resulting in no indication of proton decay into either mode. Lower limits on the proton partial lifetime of $1.4\times\mathrm{10^{34}~years}$ for $p\rightarrow e^+\eta$ and $7.3\times\mathrm{10^{33}~years}$ for $p\rightarrow \mu^+\eta$ at the 90$\%$ C.L. were set. These limits are around 1.5 times longer than our previous study and are the most stringent to date.

In this paper, we present Sinkhorn multidimensional scaling (Sinkhorn MDS) as a method for visualizing shape functionals in shape spaces. This approach uses the Sinkhorn divergence to map these infinite-dimensional spaces into lower-dimensional Euclidean spaces. We establish error estimates for the embedding generated by Sinkhorn MDS compared to the unregularized case. Moreover, we validate the method through numerical experiments, including visualizations of the classical Dido's problem and two newly introduced shape functionals: the double-well and Sinkhorn cone-type shape functionals. This paper presents a novel method for modeling the shape of a continuum robot as a Neural Configuration Euclidean Distance Function (N-CEDF). By learning separate distance fields for each link and combining them through the kinematics chain, the learned N-CEDF provides an accurate and computationally efficient representation of the robot's shape. The key advantage of a distance function representation of a continuum robot is that it enables efficient collision checking for motion planning in dynamic and cluttered environments, even with point-cloud observations. We integrate the N-CEDF into a Model Predictive Path Integral (MPPI) controller to generate safe trajectories. Trapped-ion hardware based on the Magnetic Gradient Induced Coupling (MAGIC) scheme is emerging as a promising platform for quantum computing. Nevertheless, in this (as in any other) quantum-computing platform, many technical questions still have to be resolved before large-scale and error-tolerant applications are possible. In this work, we present a thorough discussion of the contribution of higher-order terms to the MAGIC setup, which can occur due to anharmonicities in the external potential of the ion crystal (e.g., through Coulomb repulsion) or through curvature of the applied magnetic field. These terms take the form of three-spin couplings as well as diverse terms that couple spins to phonons. We find that most of these are negligible in realistic situations, with only two contributions that need careful attention. First, there are parasitic longitudinal fields whose strength increases with chain length, but which can easily be compensated by a microwave detuning. Second, anharmonicities of the Coulomb interaction can lead to well-known two-to-one conversions of phonon excitations, which can be avoided if the phonons are ground-state cooled. Our detailed analysis constitutes an important contribution on the way of making magnetic-gradient trapped-ion quantum technology fit for large-scale applications, and it may inspire new ways to purposefully design interaction terms., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

We relate the Bruce-Roberts numbers of a 1-form with respect to an ICIS to other invariants as the GSV-index, Tjurina and Milnor numbers.

We present a plausible and coherent view of the evolution of the protosolar disk that is consistent with the cosmochemical constraints and compatible with observations of other protoplanetary disks and sophisticated numerical simulations. The evidence that high-temperature condensates, CAIs and AOAs, formed near the protosun before being transported to the outer disk can be explained by either an early phase of vigorous radial spreading of the disk, or fast transport of these condensates from the vicinity of the protosun towards large disk radii via the protostellar outflow. The assumption that the material accreted towards the end of the infall phase was isotopically distinct allows us to explain the observed dichotomy in nucleosynthetic isotopic anomalies of meteorites and leads to intriguing predictions on the isotopic composition of refractory elements in comets. When the infall of material waned, the disk started to evolve as an accretion disk. Initially, dust drifted inwards, shrinking the radius of the dust component to ~ 45 au, probably about 1/2 of the width of the gas component. Then structures must have emerged, producing a series of pressure maxima in the disk which trapped the dust on My timescales. This allowed planetesimals to form at radically distinct times without changing significantly of isotopic properties. There was no late accretion of material onto the disk via streamers. The disk disappeared in ~5 Myr, as indicated by paleomagnetic data in meteorites. In conclusion, the evolution of the protosolar disk seems to have been quite typical in terms of size, lifetime, and dust behavior, suggesting that the peculiarities of the Solar system with respect to extrasolar planetary system probably originate from the chaotic nature of planet formation and not at the level of the parental disk., Comment: In press in Astronomy and Astrophysics

We study the impact of hole-doping on the Kitaev-Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice. We investigate the pairing tendencies and correlation functions in the framework of a $t-J-K$ model using density matrix renormalization group calculations on three-leg cylinders. In the case of the pure Kitaev model, which realizes a quantum spin-liquid phase at half-filling, we find that binding of two holes only occurs at low values of the hopping, where the holes are slow. We have theoretically verified that pair formation occurs in the limit of immobile holes, where the pure Kitaev model remains exactly solvable. When we instead fix the hopping at an intermediate, more realistic, value, and vary the Heisenberg and Kitaev interaction strengths, we find pairing tendencies only in the N\'eel phase. This is in contrast to prior mean-field calculations, highlighting the importance of accounting for the kinetic energy of dopants in generalized Kitaev models. Interestingly, we also find signatures of pair-density wave formation over the studied range of model parameters, namely a periodic modulation of the charge density as well as the spin-spin and pair-pair correlations in real space. Moreover, we present a comparative study of the different correlations as a function of doping. Meteorites and their components exhibit a diverse range of oxygen isotope compositions, and the isotopic exchange timescale between dust grains and ambient gas is a key parameter for understanding the spatiotemporal evolution of the solar nebula. As dust grains existed as macroscopic aggregates in the solar nebula, it is necessary to consider the isotopic exchange timescales for these aggregates. Here, we theoretically estimate the isotope exchange timescales between dust aggregates and ambient vapor. The isotope exchange process between aggregates and ambient vapor is divided into four processes: (i) supply of gas molecules to the aggregate surface, (ii) diffusion of molecules within the aggregate, (iii) isotope exchange on the surface of constituent particles, and (iv) isotope diffusion within the particles. We evaluate these timescales and assess which one becomes the rate-determining step. We reveal that the isotope exchange timescale is approximately the same as that of the constituent particles when the aggregate radius is smaller than the critical value, which is a few centimeters when considering the exchange reaction between amorphous forsterite aggregates and water vapor., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures. This study challenges strictly guaranteeing ``dissipativity'' of a dynamical system represented by neural networks learned from given time-series data. Dissipativity is a crucial indicator for dynamical systems that generalizes stability and input-output stability, known to be valid across various systems including robotics, biological systems, and molecular dynamics. By analytically proving the general solution to the nonlinear Kalman-Yakubovich-Popov (KYP) lemma, which is the necessary and sufficient condition for dissipativity, we propose a differentiable projection that transforms any dynamics represented by neural networks into dissipative ones and a learning method for the transformed dynamics. Utilizing the generality of dissipativity, our method strictly guarantee stability, input-output stability, and energy conservation of trained dynamical systems. We apply the HanleRT Tenerife Inversion Code to the spectro-polarimetric observations obtained by the Chromospheric LAyer SpectroPolarimeter. This suborbital space experiment measured the variation with wavelength of the four Stokes parameters in the near-ultraviolet spectral region of the Mg II h & k lines over a solar disk area containing part of an active region plage and the edge of a sunspot penumbra. We infer the stratification of the temperature, the electron density, the line of-sight velocity, the micro-turbulent velocity, and the longitudinal component of the magnetic field from the observed intensity and circular polarization profiles. The inferred model atmosphere shows larger temperature and electron density in the plage and the superpenumbra regions than in the quiet regions. The shape of the plage region in terms of its brightness is similar to the pattern of the inferred longitudinal component of the magnetic field in the chromosphere, as well as to that of the overlying moss observed by AIA in the 171 A band, which suggests a similar magnetic origin for the heating in both the plage and the moss region. Moreover, this heating is particularly significant in the regions with larger inferred magnetic flux. In contrast, in the superpenumbra, the regions with larger electron density and temperature are usually found in between these regions with larger magnetic flux, suggesting that the details of the heating mechanism in the chromosphere of the superpenumbra may be different to those in the plage, but with the magnetic field still playing a key role., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We consider a total variation type energy which measures the jump discontinuities different from usual total variation energy. Such a type of energy is obtained as a singular limit of the Kobayashi-Warren-Carter energy with minimization with respect to the order parameter. We consider the Rudin-Osher-Fatemi type energy by replacing relaxation term by this type of total variation energy. We show that all minimizers are piecewise constant if the data is continuous in one-dimensional setting. Moreover, the number of jumps is bounded by an explicit constant involving a constant related to the fidelity. This is quite different from conventional Rudin-Osher-Fatemi energy where a minimizer must have no jump if the data has no jumps. When an electric field of light with a frequency of{\hbar}{\Omega}is applied to a solid, Floquet states, consisting of sidebands with an interval of {\hbar}{\Omega} around an electronic state, are expected to be formed. However, only a few studies have experimentally detected such sidebands. Here, we apply mid-infrared pump near-infrared reflection probe spectroscopy to a one-dimensional Mott insulator, bis(ethylendithio)tetrathianfulvalence-difluorotetracyanoquinodimethane (ET-F2TCNQ), to detect the transient change in reflectivity R,{\Delta}R/R, due to the formation of excitonic Floquet states. Analyses, considering both odd- and even-parity excitons, demonstrate that the {\Delta}R/R spectrum reflects the formation of the first-order Floquet sidebands of excitons, and its spectral shape strongly depends on the widths of excitonic states. We study the Cauchy problem of the defocusing energy-critical stochastic nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation (SNLS) on the three dimensional torus, forced by an additive noise. We adapt the atomic spaces framework in the context of the energy-critical nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation, and employ probabilistic perturbation arguments in the context of stochastic PDEs, establishing the global well-posedness of the defocusing energy-critical quintic SNLS in $H^1(\mathbb{T}^3)$.

The rapid advancement of robotics necessitates robust tools for developing and testing safe control architectures in dynamic and uncertain environments. Ensuring safety and reliability in robotics, especially in safety-critical applications, is crucial, driving substantial industrial and academic efforts. In this context, we extend CBFkit, a Python/ROS2 toolbox, which now incorporates a planner using reach-avoid specifications as a cost function. This integration with the Model Predictive Path Integral (MPPI) controllers enables the toolbox to satisfy complex tasks while ensuring formal safety guarantees under various sources of uncertainty using Control Barrier Functions (CBFs). CBFkit is optimized for speed using JAX for automatic differentiation and jaxopt for quadratic program solving. The toolbox supports various robotic applications, including autonomous navigation, human-robot interaction, and multi-robot coordination. The toolbox also offers a comprehensive library of planner, controller, sensor, and estimator implementations. Through a series of examples, we demonstrate the enhanced capabilities of CBFkit in different robotic scenarios.

The strength distributions of the Isoscalar Giant Monopole Resonance (ISGMR) and Isoscalar Giant Quadrupole Resonance (ISGQR) in 142,146-150Nd have been determined via inelastic alpha-particle scattering with the Grand Raiden (GR) Spectrometer at the Research Center for Nuclear Physics (RCNP), Japan. In the deformed nuclei 146-150Nd, the ISGMR strength distributions exhibit a splitting into two components, while the nearly spherical nucleus 142Nd displays a single peak in the ISGMR strength distribution. We consider the Cauchy problem of a system of quadratic derivative nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations which was introduced by M. Colin and T. Colin (2004) as a model of laser-plasma interaction. For the nonperiodic setting, the authors proved some well-posedness results, which contain the scaling critical case for $d\geq 2$. In the present paper, we prove the well-posedness of this system for the periodic setting. In particular, well-posedness is proved at the scaling critical regularity for $d\geq 3$ under some conditions for the coefficients of the Laplacian. We also prove some ill-posedness results. As long as we use an iteration argument, our well-posedness results are optimal except for some critical cases., Comment: 52 pages

Cleavable metallic antiferromagnets may be of use for low-dissipation spintronic devices; however, few are currently known. Here we present orthorhombic MnRhBi3 as one such compound and present a thorough study of its physical properties. Exfoliation is demonstrated experimentally, and the cleavage energy and electronic structure are examined by density functional theory calculations. It is concluded that MnRhBi3 is a van der Waals layered material that cleaves easily between neighboring Bi layers, and that the Bi atoms have lone pairs extending into the van der Waals gaps. A series of four phase transitions are observed below room temperature, and neutron diffraction shows that at least two of the transitions involve the formation of antiferromagnetic order. Anomalous thermal expansion points to a crystallographic phase transition and/or strong magnetoelastic coupling. This work reveals a complex phase evolution in MnRhBi3 and establishes this cleavable antiferromagnetic metal as an interesting material for studying the interplay of structure, magnetism, and transport in the bulk and ultrathin limits as well as the role of lone pair electrons in interface chemistry and proximity effects in van der Waals heterostructures.

We explore the efficacy of two single-repumping schemes, $5s5p \,{}^3P_2 - 5p^2 \,{}^3P_2$ ($481\,\mathrm{nm}$) and $5s5p \,{}^3P_2 - 5s5d \,{}^3D_2$ ($497\,\mathrm{nm}$), for a magneto-optical trap (MOT) of Sr atoms. We reveal that the enhancement in the MOT lifetime is limited to $26.9(2)$ for any single-repumping scheme. Our investigation indicates that the primary decay path from the $5s5p \,{}^1P_1$ state to the $5s5p \,{}^3P_0$ state proceeds via the $5s4d \,{}^3D_1$ state, rather than through the upper states accessed by the single-repumping lasers. We estimate that the branching ratio for the $5s5p \,{}^1P_1 \to 5s4d \,{}^3D_1 \to 5s5p \,{}^3P_0$ decay path is $1:3.9 \times 10^6$ and the decay rate for the transition from the $5s5p \,{}^1P_1$ state to the $5s4d \,{}^3D_1$ state is $83(32)\,\mathrm{s^{-1}}$. This outcome underscores the limitation on atom number in the MOT for long loading times ($\gtrsim 1 \,\mathrm{s}$) when employing a single-repumping scheme. In this review, I present the electronic properties of the beta-pyrochlore oxide CsW2O6 and other related materials. At 215 K, CsW2O6 exhibits an electronic phase transition to a nonmagnetic insulating state, which exhibits a complex self-organization of 5d electrons. In this phase transition, various factors, such as geometrical frustration of the pyrochlore structure, moderately strong electron correlation, Jahn-Teller-like distortion, phase transition to the insulating state, and formation of chemical bonds in solids, which are powerful driving forces for achieving a wide variety of electronic properties in transition metal oxides, play important roles. In CsW2O6, the interplay of these factors has led to the emergence of an electronic phase transition that preserves the cubic symmetry, three-dimensional nesting of Fermi surfaces, a possible charge order with a fractional valence satisfying the Anderson condition, and an equilateral-triangular trimer formation by a three-centered-two-electron bond. In addition to the introduction of these unique features of CsW2O6, each of them has been compared to those of other materials to provide an overview of the electronic properties of a wide variety of related materials, which can contribute to a complete understanding of the vast and infinite electronic phenomena in transition metal oxides., Comment: 19 pages, 22 figures

We select blue-horizontal branch stars (BHBs) from the internal data release of the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program to reveal the global structure of the Milky Way (MW) stellar halo. The data are distributed over $\sim 1,100$~deg$^2$ area in the range of $18.5r_{\rm b}$; the statistical difference between these fitting profiles is small. Both profiles are found to show prolate shapes having axial ratios of $q=1.47^{+0.30}_{-0.33}$ and $1.56^{+0.34}_{-0.23}$, respectively. We also find a signature of the so-called "splashback radius" for the candidate BHBs, which can reach as large as $r \sim 575$~kpc, although it is still inconclusive owing to rather large distance errors in this faintest end of the sample. Various noncollinear spin textures and magnetic phases have been predicted in twisted two-dimensional CrI$_3$ due to competing ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) interlayer exchange from moir\'e stacking - with potential spintronic applications even when the underlying material possesses a negligible Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya or dipole-dipole interaction. Recent measurements have shown evidence of coexisting FM and AFM layer order in small-twist-angle CrI$_3$ bilayers and double bilayers. Yet, the nature of the magnetic textures remains unresolved and possibilities for their manipulation and electrical readout are unexplored. Here, we use tunneling magnetoresistance to investigate the collective spin states of twisted double-bilayer CrI$_3$ under both out-of-plane and in-plane magnetic fields together with detailed micromagnetic simulations of domain dynamics based on magnetic circular dichroism. Our results capture hysteretic and anisotropic field evolutions of the magnetic states and we further uncover two distinct non-volatile spin textures (out-of-plane and in-plane domains) at $\approx$ 1{\deg} twist angle, with a different global tunneling resistance that can be switched by magnetic field., Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures

The L\'evy walk, a type of random walk characterized by linear step lengths that follow a power-law distribution, is observed in the migratory behaviors of various organisms, ranging from bacteria to humans. Notably, L\'evy walks with power exponents close to two, also known as Cauchy walks, are frequently observed, though their underlying causes remain elusive. This study proposes a walk model in which agents move toward a destination in multi-dimensional space and their movement strategy is parameterized by the extent to which they pursue the shortest path to the destination. This parameter is taken to represent the attractiveness of the destination to the agents. Our findings reveal that if the destination is very attractive, agents intensively search the area around it using Brownian walks, whereas if the destination is unattractive, they explore a distant region away from the point using L\'evy walks with power exponents less than two. In the case where agents are unable to determine whether the destination is attractive or unattractive, Cauchy walks emerge. The Cauchy walker searches the region with a probability inversely proportional to the distance from the destination. This suggests that it preferentially searches the area close to the destination, while concurrently having the potential to extend the search area much further. Our model, which can change the search method and search area depending on the attractiveness of the destination, has the potential to be utilized for exploring the parameter space of optimization problems.

We have investigated the redshift evolution of the relationship between supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass and host bulge mass using a semi-analytical galaxy formation model $\nu^2$GC. Our model reproduces the relation in the local universe well. We find that, at high redshift ($z \gtrsim 3$), two sequences appear in the SMBH mass--bulge mass plane. The emergence of these two sequences can be attributed to the primary triggers of the growth of the SMBHs and bulges: galaxy mergers and disc instabilities. The growth of SMBHs and bulges as a result of galaxy mergers is responsible for giving rise to the high-mass sequence, in which SMBHs are more massive for a given host bulge mass than in the low-mas sequence. Conversely, disc instabilities are accountable for the emergence of the low-mass sequence. At lower redshifts, galaxy mergers tend to become increasingly deficient in gas, resulting in a preferential increase of bulge mass without a corresponding growth in SMBH mass. This has the effect of causing galaxies in the upper sequence to shift towards the lower one on the SMBH mass-bulge mass plane. The galaxies that undergo dry mergers serve to bridge the gap between the two sequences, eventually leading to convergence into a single relation known in the local universe. In this study, we formulate an OCR-free sequence generation model for visual document understanding (VDU). Our model not only parses text from document images but also extracts the spatial coordinates of the text based on the multi-head architecture. Named as Coordinate-aware End-to-end Document Parser (CREPE), our method uniquely integrates these capabilities by introducing a special token for OCR text, and token-triggered coordinate decoding. Neutrinos from very nearby supernovae, such as Betelgeuse, are expected to generate more than ten million events over 10\,s in Super-Kamokande (SK). At such large event rates, the buffers of the SK analog-to-digital conversion board (QBEE) will overflow, causing random loss of data that is critical for understanding the dynamics of the supernova explosion mechanism. In order to solve this problem, two new DAQ modules were developed to aid in the observation of very nearby supernovae. The first of these, the SN module, is designed to save only the number of hit PMTs during a supernova burst and the second, the Veto module, prescales the high rate neutrino events to prevent the QBEE from overflowing based on information from the SN module. In the event of a very nearby supernova, these modules allow SK to reconstruct the time evolution of the neutrino event rate from beginning to end using both QBEE and SN module data. This paper presents the development and testing of these modules together with an analysis of supernova-like data generated with a flashing laser diode. We demonstrate that the Veto module successfully prevents DAQ overflows for Betelgeuse-like supernovae as well as the long-term stability of the new modules. During normal running the Veto module is found to issue DAQ vetos a few times per month resulting in a total dead time less than 1\,ms, and does not influence ordinary operations. Additionally, using simulation data we find that supernovae closer than 800~pc will trigger Veto module resulting in a prescaling of the observed neutrino data., Comment: 28 pages, 18 figures. Serendipity-oriented recommender systems aim to counteract over-specialization in user preferences. However, evaluating a user's serendipitous response towards a recommended item can be challenging because of its emotional nature. In this study, we address this issue by leveraging the rich knowledge of large language models (LLMs), which can perform a variety of tasks. First, this study explored the alignment between serendipitous evaluations made by LLMs and those made by humans. In this investigation, a binary classification task was given to the LLMs to predict whether a user would find the recommended item serendipitously. The predictive performances of three LLMs on a benchmark dataset in which humans assigned the ground truth of serendipitous items were measured. The experimental findings reveal that LLM-based assessment methods did not have a very high agreement rate with human assessments. However, they performed as well as or better than the baseline methods. Further validation results indicate that the number of user rating histories provided to LLM prompts should be carefully chosen to avoid both insufficient and excessive inputs and that the output of LLMs that show high classification performance is difficult to interpret.

This paper introduces CBFKit, a Python/ROS toolbox for safe robotics planning and control under uncertainty. The toolbox provides a general framework for designing control barrier functions for mobility systems within both deterministic and stochastic environments. It can be connected to the ROS open-source robotics middleware, allowing for the setup of multi-robot applications, encoding of environments and maps, and integrations with predictive motion planning algorithms. Additionally, it offers multiple CBF variations and algorithms for robot control. The short video-sharing services that allow users to post 10-30 second videos (e.g., YouTube Shorts and TikTok) have attracted a lot of attention in recent years. However, conventional video copy detection (VCD) methods mainly focus on general video-sharing services (e.g., YouTube and Bilibili), and the effects of short video-sharing services on video copy detection are still unclear. Considering that illegally copied videos in short video-sharing services have service-distinctive characteristics, especially in those time lengths, the pros and cons of VCD in those services are required to be analyzed. In this paper, we examine the effects of short video-sharing services on VCD by constructing a dataset that has short video-sharing service characteristics. Our novel dataset is automatically constructed from the publicly available dataset to have reference videos and fixed short-time-length query videos, and such automation procedures assure the reproducibility and data privacy preservation of this paper. From the experimental results focusing on segment-level and video-level situations, we can see that three effects: "Segment-level VCD in short video-sharing services is more difficult than those in general video-sharing services", "Video-level VCD in short video-sharing services is easier than those in general video-sharing services", "The video alignment component mainly suppress the detection performance in short video-sharing services".

This paper explores whether considering alternative domain-specific embeddings to calculate the Fr\'echet Audio Distance (FAD) metric can help the FAD to correlate better with perceptual ratings of environmental sounds. We used embeddings from VGGish, PANNs, MS-CLAP, L-CLAP, and MERT, which are tailored for either music or environmental sound evaluation. The FAD scores were calculated for sounds from the DCASE 2023 Task 7 dataset. Using perceptual data from the same task, we find that PANNs-WGM-LogMel produces the best correlation between FAD scores and perceptual ratings of both audio quality and perceived fit with a Spearman correlation higher than 0.5. We also find that music-specific embeddings resulted in significantly lower results. Interestingly, VGGish, the embedding used for the original Fr\'echet calculation, yielded a correlation below 0.1. These results underscore the critical importance of the choice of embedding for the FAD metric design.

We propose methods and an architecture to conduct measurements and optimize newly installed optical fiber line systems semi-automatically using integrated physics-aware technologies in a data center interconnection (DCI) transmission scenario. We demonstrate, for the first time, digital longitudinal monitoring (DLM) and optical line system (OLS) physical parameter calibration working together in real-time to extract physical link parameters for transmission performance optimization. Our methodology has the following advantages over traditional design: a minimized footprint at user sites, accurate estimation of the necessary optical network characteristics via complementary telemetry technologies, and the capability to conduct all operation work remotely. The last feature is crucial, as it enables remote operation to implement network design settings for immediate response to quality of transmission (QoT) degradation and reversion in the case of unforeseen problems. We successfully performed semi-automatic line system provisioning over field fiber networks facilities at Duke University, Durham, NC. The tasks of parameter retrieval, equipment setting optimization, and system setup/provisioning were completed within 1 hour. The field operation was supervised by on-duty personnel who could access the system remotely from different time zones. By comparing Q-factor estimates calculated from the extracted link parameters with measured results from 400G transceivers, we confirmed that our methodology has a reduction in the QoT prediction errors (+-0.3 dB) over existing design (+-10.6 dB).

We present the discovery of NGC253-SNFC-dw1, a new satellite galaxy in the remote stellar halo of the Sculptor Group spiral, NGC 253. The system was revealed using deep resolved star photometry obtained as part of the Subaru Near-Field Cosmology Survey that uses the Hyper Suprime-Cam on the Subaru Telescope. Although rather luminous ($\rm{M_{V}} = -11.7 \pm 0.2$) and massive ($M_* \sim 1.25\times 10^7~\rm{M}_{\odot}$), the system is one of the most diffuse satellites yet known, with a half-light radius of $\rm{R_{h}} = 3.37 \pm 0.36$ kpc and an average surface brightness of $\sim 30.1$ mag arcmin$^{-2}$ within the $\rm{R_{h}}$. The colour-magnitude diagram shows a dominant old ($\sim 10$ Gyr) and metal-poor ($\rm{[M/H]}=-1.5 \pm 0.1$ dex) stellar population, as well as several candidate thermally-pulsing asymptotic giant branch stars. The distribution of red giant branch stars is asymmetrical and displays two elongated tidal extensions pointing towards NGC 253, suggestive of a highly disrupted system being observed at apocenter. NGC253-SNFC-dw1 has a size comparable to that of the puzzling Local Group dwarfs Andromeda XIX and Antlia 2 but is two magnitudes brighter. While unambiguous evidence of tidal disruption in these systems has not yet been demonstrated, the morphology of NGC253-SNFC-dw1 clearly shows that this is a natural path to produce such diffuse and extended galaxies. The surprising discovery of this system in a previously well-searched region of the sky emphasizes the importance of surface brightness limiting depth in satellite searches., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. Action quality assessment (AQA) applies computer vision to quantitatively assess the performance or execution of a human action. Current AQA approaches are end-to-end neural models, which lack transparency and tend to be biased because they are trained on subjective human judgements as ground-truth. To address these issues, we introduce a neuro-symbolic paradigm for AQA, which uses neural networks to abstract interpretable symbols from video data and makes quality assessments by applying rules to those symbols. We take diving as the case study. We found that domain experts prefer our system and find it more informative than purely neural approaches to AQA in diving. Our system also achieves state-of-the-art action recognition and temporal segmentation, and automatically generates a detailed report that breaks the dive down into its elements and provides objective scoring with visual evidence. As verified by a group of domain experts, this report may be used to assist judges in scoring, help train judges, and provide feedback to divers. Multi-Robot Task Allocation (MRTA) is a problem that arises in many application domains including package delivery, warehouse robotics, and healthcare. In this work, we consider the problem of MRTA for a dynamic stream of tasks with task deadlines and capacitated agents (capacity for more than one simultaneous task). Previous work commonly focuses on the static case, uses specialized algorithms for restrictive task specifications, or lacks guarantees. We propose an approach to Dynamic MRTA for capacitated robots that is based on Satisfiability Modulo Theories (SMT) solving and addresses these concerns. We show our approach is both sound and complete, and that the SMT encoding is general, enabling extension to a broader class of task specifications. We show how to leverage the incremental solving capabilities of SMT solvers, keeping learned information when allocating new tasks arriving online, and to solve non-incrementally, which we provide runtime comparisons of. Additionally, we provide an algorithm to start with a smaller but potentially incomplete encoding that can iteratively be adjusted to the complete encoding. We evaluate our method on a parameterized set of benchmarks encoding multi-robot delivery created from a graph abstraction of a hospital-like environment. We present the results of the charge ratio ($R$) and polarization ($P^{\mu}_{0}$) measurements using the decay electron events collected from 2008 September to 2022 June by the Super-Kamiokande detector. Because of its underground location and long operation, we performed high precision measurements by accumulating cosmic-ray muons. We measured the muon charge ratio to be $R=1.32 \pm 0.02$ $(\mathrm{stat.}{+}\mathrm{syst.})$ at $E_{\mu}\cos \theta_{\mathrm{Zenith}}=0.7^{+0.3}_{-0.2}$ $\mathrm{TeV}$, where $E_{\mu}$ is the muon energy and $\theta_{\mathrm{Zenith}}$ is the zenith angle of incoming cosmic-ray muons. This result is consistent with the Honda flux model while this suggests a tension with the $\pi K$ model of $1.9\sigma$. We also measured the muon polarization at the production location to be $P^{\mu}_{0}=0.52 \pm 0.02$ $(\mathrm{stat.}{+}\mathrm{syst.})$ at the muon momentum of $0.9^{+0.6}_{-0.1}$ $\mathrm{TeV}/c$ at the surface of the mountain; this also suggests a tension with the Honda flux model of $1.5\sigma$. This is the most precise measurement ever to experimentally determine the cosmic-ray muon polarization near $1~\mathrm{TeV}/c$. This paper addresses the challenge of planning a sequence of tasks to be performed by multiple robots while minimizing the overall completion time subject to timing and precedence constraints. Our approach uses the Timed Partial Orders (TPO) model to specify these constraints. We translate this problem into a Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) variant with timing and precedent constraints, and we solve it as a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) problem. Our contributions include a general planning framework for TPO specifications, a MILP formulation accommodating time windows and precedent constraints, its extension to multi-robot scenarios, and a method to quantify plan robustness. We demonstrate our framework on several case studies, including an aircraft turnaround task involving three Jackal robots, highlighting the approach's potential applicability to important real-world problems. Non-Hermitian systems exhibit richer topological properties compared to their Hermitian counterparts. It is well known that non-Hermitian systems have been classified based on either the symmetry relations for non-Hermitian Hamiltonians or the symmetry relations for non-unitary time-evolution operators in the context of Floquet topological phases. In this work, we propose that non-Hermitian systems can always be classified in two ways; a non-Hermitian system can be classified using the symmetry relations for non-Hermitian Hamiltonians or time-evolution operator regardless of the Floquet topological phases or not. We refer to this as dual symmetry classification. To demonstrate this, we successfully introduce a new non-unitary quantum walk that exhibits point gaps with a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ point-gap topological phase applying the dual symmetry classification and treating the time-evolution operator of this quantum walk as the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

On the basis of the thermodynamic theory of the excluded volume effects, we show that the size exponent varies abruptly, depending on the change of the segment concentration. Raman-gain-enhanced near-field optomechanical transduction between a movable optical cavity and SiN-membrane resonator is demonstrated. The Raman gain compensates for the intrinsic loss of the cavity and amplifies the optomechanical transduction, through which the membrane vibration is sensed using a high-Q whispering-gallery-mode optical cavity evanescently. The optical Q of the cavity resonance is improved with respect to the optical pump power, which results in an increase in the optomechanically transduced vibration signals of the mechanical resonator. Our near-field optomechanical coupling approach with optical gain realizes highly sensitive displacement measurement in nano- and micro-mechanical resonators consisting of arbitrary materials and structures., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

The layered honeycomb magnet $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ is the most promising candidate for a Kitaev quantum spin liquid (KQSL) that can host charge-neutral Majorana fermions. Recent studies have shown significant sample dependence of thermal transport properties, which are a key probe of Majorana quasiparticles in the KQSL state, highlighting the importance of preparing high-quality single crystals of $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$. Here, we present a relatively simple and reliable method to grow high-quality single crystals of $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$. We use a two-step crystal growth method consisting of a purification process by chemical vapor transport (CVT) and a main crystal growth process by sublimation. The obtained crystals exhibit a distinct first-order structural phase transition from the monoclinic ($C2/m$) to the rhombohedral ($R\bar{3}$) structure at $\sim150$ K, which is confirmed by the nuclear quadrupole resonance spectra with much sharper widths than previously reported. The Raman spectra show the absence of defect-induced modes, supporting the good crystallinity of our samples. The jumps in the thermal expansion coefficient and specific heat at the antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition at 7.6-7.7 K are larger and sharper than those of previous samples grown by the CVT and Bridgman methods and do not show any additional AFM transitions at 10-14 K due to stacking faults. The longitudinal thermal conductivity in the AFM phase is significantly larger than previously reported, indicating a very long mean free path of heat carriers. All the results indicate that our single crystals are of superior quality with good crystallinity and few stacking faults, which provides a suitable platform for studying the Kitaev physics., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures
