Search

(Abridged) JWST continues to deliver incredibly detailed infrared (IR) images of star forming regions in the Milky Way and beyond. IR emission from star-forming regions is very spectrally rich due to emission from gas-phase atoms, ions, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Physically interpreting IR images of these regions relies on assumptions about the underlying spectral energy distribution in the imaging bandpasses. We aim to provide empirical prescriptions linking line, PAH, and continuum intensities from JWST images, to facilitate the interpretation of JWST images in a wide variety of contexts. We use JWST PDRs4All Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) and Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) imaging and Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) integral field unit (IFU) and MIRI Medium Resolution Spectrograph (MRS) spectroscopic observations of the Orion Bar photodissociation region (PDR), to directly compare and cross-calibrate imaging and IFU data at ~100 AU resolution over a region where the radiation field and ISM environment evolves from the hot ionized gas to the cold molecular gas. We measure the relative contributions of line, PAH, and continuum emission to the NIRCam and MIRI filters as functions of local physical conditions. We provide empirical prescriptions based on NIRCam and MIRI images to derive intensities of emission lines and PAH features. Within the range of the environments probed in this study, these prescriptions accurately predict Pa-alpha, Br-alpha, PAH 3.3 um and 11.2 um intensities, while those for FeII 1.644 um, H_2 1--0 S(1) 2.12 um and 1--0 S(9) 4.96 um, and PAH 7.7 um show more complicated environmental dependencies. Linear combinations of JWST NIRCam and MIRI images provide effective tracers of ionized gas, H_2, and PAH emission in PDRs. Using the upGREAT instrument on SOFIA, we have imaged the [C II] 158 {\mu}m fine structure line emission in bright-rimmed pillars located at the southern edge of the IC1848 H II region, and carried out pointed observations of the [O I] 63 and 145 {\mu}m fine structure lines toward selected positions. The observations are used to characterize the morphology, velocity field, and the physical conditions in the G1 - G3 filaments. The velocity-resolved [C II] spectra show evidence of a velocity shift at the head of the brightest G1 filament, possibly caused by radiation pressure from the impinging UV photons or the rocket effect of the evaporating gas. Archival Herschel PACS and SPIRE data imply H2 column densities in the range 10^{21} - 10^{22} cm^{-2}, corresponding to maximum visual extinction AV = 10 mag, and average H2 volume density of about 4500 cm^{-3} in the filaments. The [C II] emission traces ~ 17% of the total H2 column density, as derived from dust SED fits. PDR models are unable to explain the observed line intensities of the two [O I] fine structure lines in IC1848, with the observed [O I] 145 {\mu}m line being too strong compared to the model predictions. The [O I] lines in IC1848 are overall weak and the signal-to-noise ratio is limited. However, our observations suggest that the [O I] 63/145 {\mu}m intensity ratio is a sensitive probe of the physical conditions in photon dominated regions such as IC1848. We investigate the dynamical and physical structures of bright-rimmed clouds (BRCs) in a nearby HII region. We focused on carbon- and oxygen-bearing species that trace photon-dominated regions (PDRs) and warm molecular cloud surfaces in order to understand the effect of UV radiation from the exciting stars on the cloud structure. We mapped four regions around the most prominent BRCs at scales of 4--10 arcmin in the HII region IC 1396 in [CII] 158 micron with (up)GREAT on board SOFIA. IC 1396 is predominantly excited by an O6.5V star. Toward IC 1396A, we also observed [OI] 63 micron and 145 micron. We combined these observations with JCMT archive data, which provide the low-J transitions of CO, $^{13}$CO, and C$^{18}$O. All spectra are velocity-resolved. The line profiles show a variety of velocity structures, which we investigated in detail for all observed emission lines. We find no clear sign of photoevaporating flows in the [CII] spectra, although the uncertainty in the location of the BRCs along the line of sight makes this interpretation inconclusive. Our analysis of the [$^{13}$CII] emission in IC 1396A suggests that the [CII] is likely mostly optically thin. The heating efficiency, measured by the ([CII]+[OI] 63 micron)/far-infrared intensity ratio, is higher in the northern part of IC 1396A than in the southern part, which may indicate a difference in the dust properties of the two areas. The complex velocity structures identified in the BRCs of IC 1396, which is apparently a relatively simple HII region, highlight the importance of velocity-resolved data for disentangling different components along the line of sight and thus facilitating a detailed study of the dynamics of the cloud. We also demonstrate that the optically thin [$^{13}$CII] and [OI] 145 micron emission lines are essential for a conclusive interpretation of the [CII] 158 micron and [OI] 63 micron line profiles., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 26 pages including Appendices

One of the main problems in astrochemistry is determining the amount of sulfur in volatiles and refractories in the interstellar medium. The detection of the main sulfur reservoirs (icy H$_2$S and atomic gas) has been challenging, and estimates are based on the reliability of models to account for the abundances of species containing less than 1% of the total sulfur. The high sensitivity of the James Webb Space Telescope provides an unprecedented opportunity to estimate the sulfur abundance through the observation of the [S I] 25.249 $\mu$m line. We used the [S III] 18.7 $\mu$m, [S IV] 10.5 $\mu$m, and [S l] 25.249 $\mu$m lines to estimate the amount of sulfur in the ionized and molecular gas along the Orion Bar. For the theoretical part, we used an upgraded version of the Meudon photodissociation region (PDR) code to model the observations. New inelastic collision rates of neutral atomic sulfur with ortho- and para- molecular hydrogen were calculated to predict the line intensities. The [S III] 18.7 $\mu$m and [S IV] 10.5 $\mu$m lines are detected over the imaged region with a shallow increase (by a factor of 4) toward the HII region. We estimate a moderate sulfur depletion, by a factor of $\sim$2, in the ionized gas. The corrugated interface between the molecular and atomic phases gives rise to several edge-on dissociation fronts we refer to as DF1, DF2, and DF3. The [S l] 25.249 $\mu$m line is only detected toward DF2 and DF3, the dissociation fronts located farthest from the HII region. The detailed modeling of DF3 using the Meudon PDR code shows that the emission of the [S l] 25.249 $\mu$m line is coming from warm ($>$ 40 K) molecular gas located at A$_{\rm V}$ $\sim$ 1$-$5 mag from the ionization front. Moreover, the intensity of the [S l] 25.249 $\mu$m line is only accounted for if we assume the presence of undepleted sulfur., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures. Mid-infrared emission features probe the properties of ionized gas, and hot or warm molecular gas. The Orion Bar is a frequently studied photodissociation region (PDR) containing large amounts of gas under these conditions, and was observed with the MIRI IFU aboard JWST as part of the "PDRs4All" program. The resulting IR spectroscopic images of high angular resolution (0.2") reveal a rich observational inventory of mid-IR emission lines, and spatially resolve the substructure of the PDR, with a mosaic cutting perpendicularly across the ionization front and three dissociation fronts. We extracted five spectra that represent the ionized, atomic, and molecular gas layers, and measured the most prominent gas emission lines. An initial analysis summarizes the physical conditions of the gas and the potential of these data. We identified around 100 lines, report an additional 18 lines that remain unidentified, and measured the line intensities and central wavelengths. The H I recombination lines originating from the ionized gas layer bordering the PDR, have intensity ratios that are well matched by emissivity coefficients from H recombination theory, but deviate up to 10% due contamination by He I lines. We report the observed emission lines of various ionization stages of Ne, P, S, Cl, Ar, Fe, and Ni, and show how certain line ratios vary between the five regions. We observe the pure-rotational H$_2$ lines in the vibrational ground state from 0-0 S(1) to 0-0 S(8), and in the first vibrationally excited state from 1-1 S(5) to 1-1 S(9). We derive H$_2$ excitation diagrams, and approximate the excitation with one thermal (~700 K) component representative of an average gas temperature, and one non-thermal component (~2700 K) probing the effect of UV pumping. We compare these results to an existing model for the Orion Bar PDR and highlight the differences with the observations., Comment: 26 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables. Most low-mass stars form in stellar clusters that also contain massive stars, which are sources of far-ultraviolet (FUV) radiation. Theoretical models predict that this FUV radiation produces photo-dissociation regions (PDRs) on the surfaces of protoplanetary disks around low-mass stars, impacting planet formation within the disks. We report JWST and Atacama Large Millimetere Array observations of a FUV-irradiated protoplanetary disk in the Orion Nebula. Emission lines are detected from the PDR; modelling their kinematics and excitation allows us to constrain the physical conditions within the gas. We quantify the mass-loss rate induced by the FUV irradiation, finding it is sufficient to remove gas from the disk in less than a million years. This is rapid enough to affect giant planet formation in the disk.

Forty years ago it was proposed that gas phase organic chemistry in the interstellar medium was initiated by the methyl cation CH3+, but hitherto it has not been observed outside the Solar System. Alternative routes involving processes on grain surfaces have been invoked. Here we report JWST observations of CH3+ in a protoplanetary disk in the Orion star forming region. Water is a key ingredient for the emergence of life as we know it. Yet, its destruction and reformation in space remains unprobed in warm gas. Here, we detect the hydroxyl radical (OH) emission from a planet-forming disk exposed to external far-ultraviolet (FUV) radiation with the James Webb Space Telescope. The observations are confronted with the results of quantum dynamical calculations. The highly excited OH infrared rotational lines are the tell-tale signs of H2O destruction by FUV. The OH infrared ro-vibrational lines are attributed to chemical excitation via the key reaction O+H=OH+H which seeds the formation of water in the gas-phase. We infer that the equivalent of the Earth ocean's worth of water is destroyed per month and replenished. These results show that under warm and irradiated conditions water is destroyed and efficiently reformed via gas-phase reactions. This process, assisted by diffusive transport, could reduce the HDO/H2O ratio in the warm regions of planet-forming disks., Comment: Version submitted to Nature Astronomy

(Abridged) We investigate the impact of radiative feedback from massive stars on their natal cloud and focus on the transition from the HII region to the atomic PDR (crossing the ionisation front (IF)), and the subsequent transition to the molecular PDR (crossing the dissociation front (DF)). We use high-resolution near-IR integral field spectroscopic data from NIRSpec on JWST to observe the Orion Bar PDR as part of the PDRs4All JWST Early Release Science Program. The NIRSpec data reveal a forest of lines including, but not limited to, HeI, HI, and CI recombination lines, ionic lines, OI and NI fluorescence lines, Aromatic Infrared Bands (AIBs including aromatic CH, aliphatic CH, and their CD counterparts), CO2 ice, pure rotational and ro-vibrational lines from H2, and ro-vibrational lines HD, CO, and CH+, most of them detected for the first time towards a PDR. Their spatial distribution resolves the H and He ionisation structure in the Huygens region, gives insight into the geometry of the Bar, and confirms the large-scale stratification of PDRs. We observe numerous smaller scale structures whose typical size decreases with distance from Ori C and IR lines from CI, if solely arising from radiative recombination and cascade, reveal very high gas temperatures consistent with the hot irradiated surface of small-scale dense clumps deep inside the PDR. The H2 lines reveal multiple, prominent filaments which exhibit different characteristics. This leaves the impression of a "terraced" transition from the predominantly atomic surface region to the CO-rich molecular zone deeper in. This study showcases the discovery space created by JWST to further our understanding of the impact radiation from young stars has on their natal molecular cloud and proto-planetary disk, which touches on star- and planet formation as well as galaxy evolution., Comment: 52 pages, 30 figures, submitted to A&A

We have mapped the NGC 2023 reflection nebula in the 63 and 145 micron transitions of [O I] and the 158 micron [C II] spectral lines using the heterodyne receiver upGREAT on SOFIA. The observations were used to identify the diffuse and dense components of the PDR traced by the [C II] and [O I] emission, respectively. The velocity-resolved observations reveal the presence of a significant column of low-excitation atomic oxygen, seen in absorption in the [O I] 63 micron spectra, amounting to about 20-60% of the oxygen column seen in emission in the [O I] 145 micron spectra. Some self-absorption is also seen in [C II], but for the most part it is hardly noticeable. The [C II] and [O I] 63 micron spectra show strong red- and blue-shifted wings due to photo evaporation flows especially in the southeastern and southern part of the reflection nebula, where comparison with the mid- and high-J CO emission indicates that the C+ region is expanding into a dense molecular cloud. Using a two-slab toy model the large-scale self-absorption seen in [O I] 63 micron is readily explained as originating in foreground low-excitation gas associated with the source. Similar columns have also been observed recently in other Galactic photon-dominated-regions (PDRs). These results have two implications: for the velocity-unresolved extra-galactic observations this could impact the use of [O I] 63 micron as a tracer of massive star formation and secondly the widespread self-absorption in [O I] 63 micron leads to underestimate of the column density of atomic oxygen derived from this tracer and necessitates the use of alternative indirect methods., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The JWST has captured the most detailed and sharpest infrared images ever taken of the inner region of the Orion Nebula, the nearest massive star formation region, and a prototypical highly irradiated dense photo-dissociation region (PDR). We investigate the fundamental interaction of far-ultraviolet photons with molecular clouds. The transitions across the ionization front (IF), dissociation front (DF), and the molecular cloud are studied at high-angular resolution. These transitions are relevant to understanding the effects of radiative feedback from massive stars and the dominant physical and chemical processes that lead to the IR emission that JWST will detect in many Galactic and extragalactic environments. Due to the proximity of the Orion Nebula and the unprecedented angular resolution of JWST, these data reveal that the molecular cloud borders are hyper structured at small angular scales of 0.1-1" (0.0002-0.002 pc or 40-400 au at 414 pc). A diverse set of features are observed such as ridges, waves, globules and photoevaporated protoplanetary disks. At the PDR atomic to molecular transition, several bright features are detected that are associated with the highly irradiated surroundings of the dense molecular condensations and embedded young star. Toward the Orion Bar PDR, a highly sculpted interface is detected with sharp edges and density increases near the IF and DF. This was predicted by previous modeling studies, but the fronts were unresolved in most tracers. A complex, structured, and folded DF surface was traced by the H2 lines. This dataset was used to revisit the commonly adopted 2D PDR structure of the Orion Bar. JWST provides us with a complete view of the PDR, all the way from the PDR edge to the substructured dense region, and this allowed us to determine, in detail, where the emission of the atomic and molecular lines, aromatic bands, and dust originate.

(Abridged) Mid-infrared observations of photodissociation regions (PDRs) are dominated by strong emission features called aromatic infrared bands (AIBs). The most prominent AIBs are found at 3.3, 6.2, 7.7, 8.6, and 11.2 $\mu$m. The most sensitive, highest-resolution infrared spectral imaging data ever taken of the prototypical PDR, the Orion Bar, have been captured by JWST. We provide an inventory of the AIBs found in the Orion Bar, along with mid-IR template spectra from five distinct regions in the Bar: the molecular PDR, the atomic PDR, and the HII region. We use JWST NIRSpec IFU and MIRI MRS observations of the Orion Bar from the JWST Early Release Science Program, PDRs4All (ID: 1288). We extract five template spectra to represent the morphology and environment of the Orion Bar PDR. The superb sensitivity and the spectral and spatial resolution of these JWST observations reveal many details of the AIB emission and enable an improved characterization of their detailed profile shapes and sub-components. While the spectra are dominated by the well-known AIBs at 3.3, 6.2, 7.7, 8.6, 11.2, and 12.7 $\mu$m, a wealth of weaker features and sub-components are present. We report trends in the widths and relative strengths of AIBs across the five template spectra. These trends yield valuable insight into the photochemical evolution of PAHs, such as the evolution responsible for the shift of 11.2 $\mu$m AIB emission from class B$_{11.2}$ in the molecular PDR to class A$_{11.2}$ in the PDR surface layers. This photochemical evolution is driven by the increased importance of FUV processing in the PDR surface layers, resulting in a "weeding out" of the weakest links of the PAH family in these layers. Massive stars disrupt their natal molecular cloud material through radiative and mechanical feedback processes. These processes have profound effects on the evolution of interstellar matter in our Galaxy and throughout the Universe, from the era of vigorous star formation at redshifts of 1-3 to the present day. The dominant feedback processes can be probed by observations of the Photo-Dissociation Regions (PDRs) where the far-ultraviolet photons of massive stars create warm regions of gas and dust in the neutral atomic and molecular gas. PDR emission provides a unique tool to study in detail the physical and chemical processes that are relevant for most of the mass in inter- and circumstellar media including diffuse clouds, proto-planetary disks and molecular cloud surfaces, globules, planetary nebulae, and star-forming regions. PDR emission dominates the infrared (IR) spectra of star-forming galaxies. Most of the Galactic and extragalactic observations obtained with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will therefore arise in PDR emission. In this paper we present an Early Release Science program using the MIRI, NIRSpec, and NIRCam instruments dedicated to the observations of an emblematic and nearby PDR: the Orion Bar. These early JWST observations will provide template datasets designed to identify key PDR characteristics in JWST observations. These data will serve to benchmark PDR models and extend them into the JWST era. We also present the Science-Enabling products that we will provide to the community. These template datasets and Science-Enabling products will guide the preparation of future proposals on star-forming regions in our Galaxy and beyond and will facilitate data analysis and interpretation of forthcoming JWST observations., Comment: Submitted to PASP

[13CII] observations in several Galactic sources show that the fine-structure [12CII] emission is often optically thick (the optical depths around 1 to a few). The aim of our study is to test whether this also affects the [12CII] emission from nearby galaxies like the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We observed three star-forming regions in the LMC with upGREAT on board SOFIA at the frequency of the [CII] line. The 4GHz band width covers all three hyperfine lines of [13CII] simultaneously. For the analysis, we combined the [13CII] F=1-0 and F=1-1 hyperfine components, as they do not overlap with the [12CII] line in velocity. Three positions in N159 and N160 show an enhancement of [13CII] compared to the abundance-ratio-scaled [12CII] profile. This is likely due to the [12CII] line being optically thick, supported by the fact that the [13CII] line profile is narrower than [12CII], the enhancement varies with velocity, and the peak velocity of [13CII] matches the [OI] 63um self-absorption. The [12CII] line profile is broader than expected from a simple optical depth broadening of the [13CII] line, supporting the scenario of several PDR components in one beam having varying [12CII] optical depths. The derived [12CII] optical depth at three positions (beam size of 14arcsec, corresponding to 3.4pc) is 1--3, which is similar to values observed in several Galactic sources shown in previous studies. Understanding the matter cycle in the interstellar medium of galaxies from the assembly of clouds to star formation and stellar feedback remains an important and exciting field in comtemporary astrophysics. Many open questions regarding cloud and structure formation, the role of turbulence, and the relative importance of the various feedback processes can only be addressed with observations of spectrally resolved lines. We here stress the importance of two specific sets of lines: the finestructure lines of atomic carbon as a tracer of the dark molecular gas and mid-J CO lines as tracers of the warm, active molecular gas in regions of turbulence dissipation and feedback. The observations must cover a wide range of environments (i.e., physical conditions), which will be achieved by large scale surveys of Galactic molecular clouds, the Galactic Center, the Magellanic clouds, and nearby galaxies. To date, such surveys are completely missing and thus constitute an important science opportunity for the next decade and beyond. For the successful interpretation of the observations, it will be essential to combine them with results from (chemical) modelling and simulations of the interstellar medium., Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure

The aim of our study is to investigate the physical properties of the star-forming interstellar medium (ISM) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) by separating the origin of the emission lines spatially and spectrally. Following Okada et al. (2015, Paper I), we investigate different phases of the ISM traced by carbon-bearing species in four star-forming regions in the LMC, and model the physical properties using the KOSMA-tau PDR model. We mapped 3--13 arcmin$^2$ areas in 30 Dor, N158, N160 and N159 along the molecular ridge of the LMC in [CII]158um with GREAT on board SOFIA, and in CO(2-1) to (6-5), $^{13}$CO(2-1) and (3-2), [CI]3P1-3P0 and 3P2-3P1 with APEX. In all four star-forming regions, the line profiles of CO, $^{13}$CO, and [CI] emission are similar, whereas [CII] typically shows wider line profiles or an additional velocity component. For selected positions in N159 and 30 Dor, we observed the velocity-resolved [OI] 145um and 63um lines for the first time with upGREAT. At some positions, the [OI] line profiles match those of CO, at other positions they are more similar to the [CII] profiles. We interpret the different line profiles of CO, [CII] and [OI] as contributions from spatially separated clouds and/or clouds in different physical phases, which give different line ratios depending on their physical properties. We model the emission from the CO, [CI], [CII], and [OI] lines and the far-infrared continuum emission using the latest KOSMA-tau PDR model, which treats the dust-related physics consistently and computes the dust continuum SED together with the line emission of the chemical species. We find that the line and continuum emissions are not well-reproduced by a single clump ensemble. Toward the CO peak at N159~W, we propose a scenario that the CO, [CII], and [OI] 63um emission are weaker than expected because of mutual shielding among clumps. The Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) provides the only laboratory to study the structure of molecular gas at high resolution and low metallicity. We present results from the Herschel Spectroscopic Survey of the SMC (HS$^{3}$), which mapped the key far-IR cooling lines [CII], [OI], [NII], and [OIII] in five star-forming regions, and new ALMA 7m-array maps of $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO $(2-1)$ with coverage overlapping four of the five HS$^{3}$ regions. We detect [CII] and [OI] throughout all of the regions mapped. The data allow us to compare the structure of the molecular clouds and surrounding photodissociation regions using $^{13}$CO, CO, [CII], and [OI] emission at $<10$" ($<3$ pc) scales. We estimate Av using far-IR thermal continuum emission from dust and find the CO/[CII] ratios reach the Milky Way value at high A$_{V}$ in the centers of the clouds and fall to $\sim{1/5-1/10}\times$ the Milky Way value in the outskirts, indicating the presence of translucent molecular gas not traced by bright CO emission. We estimate the amount of molecular gas traced by bright [CII] emission at low A$_{V}$ and bright CO emission at high A$_{V}$. We find that most of the molecular gas is at low A$_{V}$ and traced by bright [CII] emission, but that faint CO emission appears to extend to where we estimate the H$_{2}$-to-HI transition occurs. By converting our H$_{2}$ gas estimates to a CO-to-H$_{2}$ conversion factor ($X_{CO}$), we show that $X_{CO}$ is primarily a function of A$_{V}$, consistent with simulations and models of low metallicity molecular clouds., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We investigate the physical conditions of the CO gas near the young star cluster, Trumpler 14 of the Carina Nebula. The observations presented in this work are taken with the Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS) of the Spectral and Photometric Imaging REceiver (SPIRE) onboard the Herschel Space Observatory. Our field of view covers the edge of a cavity carved by Trumpler 14 about $1\,\mathrm{Myr}$ ago and marks the transition from HII regions to photo-dissociation regions. With the state-of-the-art Meudon PDR code, we successfully derive the physical conditions, which include the thermal pressure ($P$) and the scaling factor of radiation fields ($G_{\mathrm{UV}}$), from the observed CO spectral line energy distributions~(SLEDs) in the observed region. The derived $G_{\mathrm{UV}}$ values generally show an excellent agreement with the UV radiation fields created by nearby OB-stars and thus confirm that the main excitation source of the observed CO emission are the UV-photons provided by the massive stars. The derived thermal pressure is between $0.5-3\,\times\,10^{8}\,\mathrm{K\,cm^{-3}}$ with the highest values found along the ionization front in Car I-E region facing Trumpler 14, hinting that the cloud structure is similar to the recent observations of the Orion Bar. Comparing the derived thermal pressure with the radiation fields, we report the first observationally-derived and spatially-resolved $P \sim 2\times10^4\,G_{\mathrm{UV}}$ relationship. As direct comparisons of the modeling results to the observed $^{13}\mathrm{CO}$, [OI] $63\,\mathrm{\mu m}$, and [CII] $158\,\mathrm{\mu m}$ intensities are not straightforward, we urge the readers to be cautious when constraining the physical conditions of PDRs with combinations of $^{12}\mathrm{CO}$, $^{13}\mathrm{CO}$, [CI], [OI] $63\,\mathrm{\mu m}$, and [CII] $158\,\mathrm{\mu m}$ observations., Comment: Accepted for publication by A&A, comments are welcome

We report on the detection of the ground-state rotational line of ortho-D2H+ at 1.477 THz (203 micron) using the German REceiver for Astronomy at Terahertz frequencies (GREAT) onboard the Stratospheric Observatory For Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA). The line is seen in absorption against far-infrared continuum from the protostellar binary IRAS 16293-2422 in Ophiuchus. The para-D2H+ line at 691.7 GHz was not detected with the APEX telescope toward this position. These D2H+ observations complement our previous detections of para-H2D+ and ortho-H2D+ using SOFIA and APEX. By modeling chemistry and radiative transfer in the dense core surrounding the protostars, we find that the ortho-D2H+ and para-H2D+ absorption features mainly originate in the cool (T<18 K) outer envelope of the core. In contrast, the ortho-H2D+ emission from the core is significantly absorbed by the ambient molecular cloud. Analyses of the combined D2H+ and H2D+ data result in an age estimate of ~500 000 yr for the core, with an uncertainty of ~200 000 yr. The core material has probably been pre-processed for another 500 000 years in conditions corresponding to those in the ambient molecular cloud. The inferred time scale is more than ten times the age of the embedded protobinary. The D2H+ and H2D+ ions have large and nearly equal total (ortho+para) fractional abundances of ~$10^{-9}$ in the outer envelope. This confirms the central role of H3+ in the deuterium chemistry in cool, dense gas, and adds support to the prediction of chemistry models that also D3+ should be abundant in these conditions., Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We try to understand the gas heating and cooling in the S 140 star forming region by spatially and spectrally resolving the distribution of the main cooling lines with GREAT/SOFIA. We mapped the fine structure lines of [OI] (63 {\mu}m) and [CII] (158 {\mu}m) and the rotational transitions of CO 13-12 and 16-15 with GREAT/SOFIA and analyzed the spatial and velocity structure to assign the emission to individual heating sources. We measure the optical depth of the [CII] line and perform radiative transfer computations for all observed transitions. By comparing the line intensities with the far-infrared continuum we can assess the total cooling budget and measure the gas heating efficiency. The main emission of fine structure lines in S 140 stems from a 8.3'' region close to the infrared source IRS 2 that is not prominent at any other wavelength. It can be explained by a photon-dominated region (PDR) structure around the embedded cluster if we assume that the [OI] line intensity is reduced by a factor seven due to self-absorption. The external cloud interface forms a second PDR at an inclination of 80-85 degrees illuminated by an UV field of 60 times the standard interstellar radiation field. The main radiation source in the cloud, IRS 1, is not prominent at all in the fine structure lines. We measure line-to-continuum cooling ratios below 10^(-4), i.e. values lower than in any other Galactic source, rather matching the far-IR line deficit seen in ULIRGs. In particular the low intensity of the [CII] line can only be modeled by an extreme excitation gradient in the gas around IRS 1. We found no explanation why IRS 1 shows no associated fine-structure line peak, while IRS 2 does. The [CII]158um line is one of the dominant cooling lines in star-forming active regions. The commonly assumed clumpy UV-penetrated cloud models predict a [CII] line profile similar to that of CO. However, recent spectral-resolved observations show that they are often very different, indicating a more complex origin of the line emission including the dynamics of the source region. The aim of our study is to investigate the physical properties of the star-forming ISM in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) by separating the origin of the emission lines spatially and spectrally. In this paper, we focus on the spectral characteristics and the origin of the emission lines, and the phases of carbon-bearing species in the N159 star-forming region in the LMC. We mapped a 4'x(3-4)' region in N159 in [CII]158um and [NII]205um with the GREAT on board SOFIA, and in CO(3-2), (4-3), (6-5), 13CO(3-2), and [CI]3P1-3P0 and 3P2-3P1 with APEX. The emission of all transitions observed shows a large variation in the line profiles across the map and between the different species. At most positions the [CII] emission line profile is substantially wider than that of CO and [CI]. We estimated the fraction of the [CII] integrated line emission that cannot be fitted by the CO line profile to be 20%-50%. We derived the relative contribution from C+, C, and CO to the column density in each velocity bin. The contribution from C+ dominates the velocity range far from the velocities traced by the dense molecular gas, and the region located between the CO cores of N159 W and E. We estimate the contribution of the ionized gas to the [CII] emission using the ratio to the [NII] emission to be < 19% to the [CII] emission at its peak position, and <15% over the whole observed region. We report the results of a search for emission features from interstellar deuterated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the 4um region with the Infrared Camera (IRC) onboard AKARI. No significant excess emission is seen in 4.3-4.7um in the spectra toward the Orion Bar and M17 after the subtraction of line emission from the ionized gas. A small excess of emission remains at around 4.4 and 4.65um, but the ratio of their intensity to that of the band emission from PAHs at 3.3-3.5um is estimated as 2-3%. This is an order of magnitude smaller than the values previously reported and also those predicted by the model of deuterium depletion onto PAHs. Since the subtraction of the ionized gas emission introduces an uncertainty, the deuterated PAH features are also searched for in the reflection nebula GN 18.14.0, which does not show emission lines from ionized gas. We obtain a similar result that excess emission in the 4um region, if present, is about 2% of the PAH band emission in the 3um region. The present study does not find evidence for the presence of the large amount of deuterated PAHs that the depletion model predicts. We observationally investigate the relation between the photoelectric heating efficiency in PDRs and the charge of PAHs, which are considered to play a key role in photoelectric heating. Using PACS onboard Herschel, we observed six PDRs spanning a wide range of FUV radiation fields (G_0=100-10^5). To measure the photoelectric heating efficiency, we obtained the intensities of the main cooling lines, i.e., the [OI]63um, 145um, and [CII]158um, as well as the FIR continuum intensity. We used Spitzer/IRS spectroscopic mapping observations to investigate the MIR PAH features in the same regions. We decomposed the MIR PAH emission into that of neutral (PAH^0) and positively ionized (PAH^+) species to derive the fraction of the positively charged PAHs, and compare it to the photoelectric heating efficiency. The heating efficiency traced by ([OI]63um+[OI]145um+[CII]158um) / TIR, ranges between 0.1% and 0.9% in different sources, and the fraction of PAH^+ relative to (PAH^0 + PAH^+) spans from 0(+11)% to 87(+/-10)%. All positions with a high PAH^+ fraction show a low heating efficiency, and all positions with a high heating efficiency have a low PAH^+ fraction, supporting the scenario in which a positive grain charge results in a decreased heating efficiency. Theoretical estimates of the photoelectric heating efficiency show a stronger dependence on the charging parameter gamma=G_0 T^{1/2}/n_e than the observed efficiency reported in this study, and the discrepancy is significant at low gamma. The photoelectric heating efficiency on PAHs, traced by ([OI]63um+[OI]145um+[CII]158um) / (PAH+[OI]63um+[OI]145um+[CII]158um), shows a much better match between the observations and the theoretical estimates. The good agreement of the photoelectric heating efficiency on PAHs with a theoretical model indicates the dominant contribution of PAHs to the photoelectric heating. We investigate the gas dynamics and the physical properties of photodissociation regions (PDRs) in IC1396A, which is an illuminated bright-rimmed globule with internal structures created by young stellar objects. Our mapping observations of the [CII] emission in IC1396A with GREAT onboard SOFIA revealed the detailed velocity structure of this region. We combined them with observations of the [CI] 3P_1 - 3P_0 and CO(4-3) emissions to study the dynamics of the different tracers and physical properties of the PDRs. The [CII] emission generally matches the IRAC 8 micron, which traces the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emissions. The CO(4-3) emission peaks inside the globule, and the [CI] emission is strong in outer regions, following the 8 micron emission to some degree, but its peak is different from that of [CII]. The [CII] emitting gas shows a clear velocity gradient within the globule, which is not significant in the [CI] and CO(4-3) emission. Some clumps that are prominent in [CII] emission appear to be blown away from the rim of the globule. The observed ratios of [CII]/[CI] and [CII]/CO(4-3) are compared to the KOSMA-tau PDR model, which indicates a density of 10^4-10^5 cm-3., Comment: 4 pages with 3 figures, accepted for publication in A&A (SOFIA/GREAT special issue)

The GREAT observations need frequency-selective calibration across the passband for the residual atmospheric opacity at flight altitude. At these altitudes the atmospheric opacity has both narrow and broad spectral features. To determine the atmospheric transmission at high spectral resolution, GREAT compares the observed atmospheric emission with atmospheric model predictions, and therefore depends on the validity of the atmospheric models. We present the distribution map of the far-infrared [OIII] 88um line emission around the 30 Doradus (30 Dor) region in the Large Magellanic Cloud obtained with the Fourier Transform Spectrometer of the Far-Infrared Surveyor onboard AKARI. The map reveals that the [OIII] emission is widely distributed by more than 10' around the super star cluster R136, implying that the 30 Dor region is affluent with interstellar radiation field hard enough to ionize O^{2+}. The observed [OIII] line intensities are as high as (1-2) x 10^{-6} W m^{-2} sr^{-1} on the peripheral regions 4'-5' away from the center of 30 Dor, which requires gas densities of 60-100 cm^{-3}. However the observed size of the distribution of the [OIII] emission is too large to be explained by massive stars in the 30 Dor region enshrouded by clouds with the constant gas density of 10^2 cm^{-3}. Therefore the surrounding structure is likely to be highly clumpy. We also find a global correlation between the [OIII] and the far-infrared continuum emission, suggesting that the gas and dust are well mixed in the highly-ionized region where the dust survives in clumpy dense clouds shielded from the energetic photons., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Publications of the Astronomical Society of Japan (PASJ)

We observed diffuse cosmic and atmospheric gamma rays at balloon altitudes with the Sub-MeV gamma-ray Imaging Loaded-on-balloon Experiment I (SMILE-I) as the first step toward a future all-sky survey with a high sensitivity. SMILE-I employed an electron-tracking Compton camera comprised of a gaseous electron tracker as a Compton-scattering target and a scintillation camera as an absorber. The balloon carrying the SMILE-I detector was launched from the Sanriku Balloon Center of the Institute of Space and Astronomical Science/Japan Space Exploration Agency on September 1, 2006, and the flight lasted for 6.8 hr, including level flight for 4.1 hr at an altitude of 32-35 km. During the level flight, we successfully detected 420 downward gamma rays between 100 keV and 1 MeV at zenith angles below 60 degrees. To obtain the flux of diffuse cosmic gamma rays, we first simulated their scattering in the atmosphere using Geant4, and for gamma rays detected at an atmospheric depth of 7.0 g cm-2, we found that 50% and 21% of the gamma rays at energies of 150 keV and 1 MeV, respectively, were scattered in the atmosphere prior to reaching the detector. Moreover, by using Geant4 simulations and the QinetiQ atmospheric radiation model, we estimated that the detected events consisted of diffuse cosmic and atmospheric gamma rays (79%), secondary photons produced in the instrument through the interaction between cosmic rays and materials surrounding the detector (19%), and other particles (2%). The obtained growth curve was comparable to Ling's model, and the fluxes of diffuse cosmic and atmospheric gamma rays were consistent with the results of previous experiments. The expected detection sensitivity of a future SMILE experiment measuring gamma rays between 150 keV and 20 MeV was estimated from our SMILE-I results and was found to be ten times better than that of other experiments at around 1 MeV., Comment: The Astrophysical Journal accepted

The Far-Infrared Surveyor (FIS) onboard the AKARI satellite has a spectroscopic capability provided by a Fourier transform spectrometer (FIS-FTS). FIS-FTS is the first space-borne imaging FTS dedicated to far-infrared astronomical observations. We describe the calibration process of the FIS-FTS and discuss its accuracy and reliability. The calibration is based on the observational data of bright astronomical sources as well as two instrumental sources. We have compared the FIS-FTS spectra with the spectra obtained from the Long Wavelength Spectrometer (LWS) of the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) having a similar spectral coverage. The present calibration method accurately reproduces the spectra of several solar system objects having a reliable spectral model. Under this condition the relative uncertainty of the calibration of the continuum is estimated to be $\pm$ 15% for SW, $\pm$ 10% for 70-85 cm^(-1) of LW, and $\pm$ 20% for 60-70 cm^(-1) of LW; and the absolute uncertainty is estimated to be +35/-55% for SW, +35/-55% for 70-85 cm^(-1) of LW, and +40/-60% for 60-70 cm^(-1) of LW. Spitzer and AKARI observations have found that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are present in nearby elliptical galaxies, but their spatial distributions are still unknown. In order to investigate their distributions, we performed deep spectral mapping observations of the PAH-detected elliptical galaxy NGC4589, a merger remnant with a minor-axis optical dust lane. As a result, we obtain clear evidence that the PAH 11.3 um emission comes predominantly from the dust lane of the galaxy. We also detect molecular hydrogen line emissions from the dust lane. The PAH 17 um emission is distributed differently from the PAH 11.3 um emission, and more similarly to the dust continuum emission. From their distinctive distributions, we suggest that the PAHs responsible for the 11.3 um feature are secondary products through the evolution of the ISM brought in by the merger., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in the ApJL

We investigate the structure of the interstellar medium (ISM) and identify the location of possible embedded excitation sources from far-infrared (FIR) line and mid-infrared continuum emission maps. We carried out imaging spectroscopic observations of four giant Galactic star-forming regions with the Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS) onboard AKARI. We obtained [OIII] 88 micron and [CII] 158 micron line intensity maps of all the regions: G3.270-0.101, G333.6-0.2, NGC3603, and M17. For G3.270-0.101, we obtained high-spatial-resolution [OIII] 88 micron line-emission maps and a FIR continuum map for the first time, which imply that [OIII] 88 micron emission identifies the excitation sources more clearly than the radio continuum emission. In G333.6-0.2, we found a local [OIII] 88 micron emission peak, which is indicative of an excitation source. This is supported by the 18 micron continuum emission, which is considered to trace the hot dust distribution. For all regions, the [CII] 158 micron emission is distributed widely as suggested by previous observations of star-forming regions. We conclude that [OIII] 88 micron emission traces the excitation sources more accurately than the radio continuum emission, especially where there is a high density and/or column density gradient.
