We have successfully synthesized single crystals of the site-ordered cubic (C15b) Laves phase compound LuInCo$_4$ with the Co-pyrochlore sublattice for the first time. LuInCo$_4$ undergoes a ferromagnetic transition at 306 K and has a saturation moment of 3.43 $\mu_{\rm{B}}$/f.u. at 5 K. The strongly ferromagnetic nature was verified by DFT calculations, suggesting that Co-3$d$ flat bands near the Fermi level induce the spin polarization. The magnetization is isotropic above $\sim$100 K, saturates most easily in the [100] direction at low temperatures. In this anisotropic ferromagnetic state, the magnetization undergoes a metamagnetic transition in the [111] direction. Our results suggest that LuInCo$_4$ is a new strong but unusual itinerant electron ferromagnet, which deserves further study as a pyrochlore metal., Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures

We successfully synthesized samples of La$_{3}$Ni$_{2}$O$_{7+\delta}$ ($\delta = -0.50$, $-0.16$, $0.00$, $+0.01$, and $+0.12$) and measured the resistance under extremely high pressures using a diamond anvil cell to establish the electronic phase diagram. A Mott insulating state appears at $\delta = -0.50$, where all Ni ions are divalent. With increasing oxygen content, superconductivity appears at $\delta = 0.00$ and higher, above approximately 25 GPa, passing through Anderson localization at $\delta = -0.16$. The superconducting transition temperature $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ decreases with increasing pressures for both $\delta = 0.00$ and $+0.12$, with the pressure dependence of $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ being much stronger in the latter than in the former.

The superconducting transition temperatures, $T_{\mathrm{c}}$, of La$_{4}$Ni$_{3}$O$_{10+\delta}$($\delta$ = 0.04 and -0.01) were determined under various pressures up to 124.9 GPa by electrical resistance measurements with a diamond anvil cell. $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ exhibits a strong dependence on oxygen content within the pressure range of approximately 20 GPa and 80 GPa. At 48.0 GPa, $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ of La$_{4}$Ni$_{3}$O$_{10.04}$ peaks at 36 K, marking the highest $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ reported thus far., Comment: to be published in J. Phys. Soc. Jpn

The La-Co co-substituted magnetoplumbite-type (M-type) ferrites $A$Fe$_{12}$O$_{19}$ ($A$ = Ca, Sr and Ba, ion sizes Ca$^{2+}$ $<$ Sr$^{2+}$ $<$ Ba$^{2+}$) with Co compositions around 0.2 have been subjected to $^{59}$Co-NMR. The results show that Co occupies the 4f$_1$, 2a and 12k sites, and that the smaller the $A$ ion, the more Co tends to occupy the 4f$_1$ minority spin site, which is effective in enhancing both uniaxial anisotropy and magnetisation. First-principles total energy calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) of undoped $A$Fe$_{12}$O$_{19}$ and a supercell ($2 \times 2 \times 1$ of the unit cell) in which 1/96 of Fe$^{3+}$ is replaced by Co$^{2+}$ were performed to predict the stable structure and Co occupancy sites. The results show that regardless of $A$, Co is most stable when it occupies the 4f$_1$ site, followed by the 2a and 12k sites with energy differences on the order of 100 meV, and Co practically does not occupy the 2b and 4f$_2$ sites. As the $A$ ion becomes smaller, the energy difference when Co occupies each Fe site tends to increase, and the Co occupancy of the 4f$_1$ site also increases. The site selectivity of Co can be roughly explained as a result of the difference in uniaxial strain along the $c$-axis associated with the difference in $A$. However, the influence of the $A$ ion differs between the R and S blocks and the local strain also has a secondary effect on the Co distribution. Based on these results, the guidelines for improving the performance (anisotropy and magnetisation) of La-Co co-substituted M-type ferrite magnets with a limited amount of Co can be summarised as follows: It is effective to select as small $A$ ions as possible and to post-anneal at low temperature or cool slowly to concentrate Co at the 4f$_1$ site in tetrahedral coordination., Comment: 33 pages, 9 figures

We study the possibility of superconductivity in a trilayer Ruddlesden-Popper nickelate La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$ under pressure both theoretically and experimentally, making comparison with the recently discovered high $T_c$ superconductor La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$, a bilayer nickelate. Through DFT calculations, we find that a structural phase transition from monoclinic to tetragonal takes place around 10 - 15 GPa. Using the tetragonal crystal structure, we theoretically investigate the possibility of superconductivity, where a combination of fluctuation exchange approximation and linearized Eliashberg equation is applied to a six-orbital model constructed from first principles band calculation. The obtained results suggests that La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$ may also become superconducting under high pressure with $T_c$ comparable to some cuprates, although it is not as high as La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$. We also perform experimental studies using our polycrystalline samples of La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_{7.01}$ and La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{9.99}$. The superconducting transition of La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_{7.01}$, with a maximum onset $T_c$ of 67.0 K at a pressure of 26.5 GPa, is confirmed by a drop in the electrical resistance, as well as the magnetic field dependence of the resistance. Quite interestingly, similar temperature and magnetic field dependencies of the resistance are observed also for La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{9.99}$, where a drop in the resistance is observed at lower temperatures compared to La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_{7.01}$, under pressures of 32.8 GPa and above. Given the theoretical expectation, the reduction in the resistance can most likely be attributed to the occurrence of superconductivity in La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{9.99}$. The temperature at which the resistance deviates from a linear behavior, considered as the onset $T_c$, monotonically increases up to 23 K at 79.2 GPa, which is opposite to the pressure dependence of $T_c$ in La3Ni2O7.01., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, Fig.4 added

The solid solution 122 compounds, Eu(Co$_{1-x}$Ni$_{x}$)$_{2}$P$_{2}$, show valence transition between divalent state and intermediate valence states at Eu, which is firmly correlated to multiple degrees of freedom in the solid such as the isostructural transition between the collapsed tetragonal (cT) and uncollapsed tetragonal (ucT) structures, $3d$ magnetism, and the formation of P-P dimers. To gain insights into the correlated behavior, we investigate the effect of high magnetic fields on the samples of $x = 0.4$ and $0.5$ using magnetostriction and magnetization measurements up to 60 T. The samples are in the Eu valence fluctuating regime, where the possible structural transition from cT to ucT may be induced by the Eu valence change under the magnetic fields. For both samples, magnetostriction smoothly increases with increasing magnetic fields. The behavior is in good agreement with the calculated results using the interconfigurational fluctuation (ICF) model that describes the valence change. This indicates that $\Delta L$ represents the change of the Eu valence state in these compounds. Magnetization curves for both compounds show good agreement with the ICF model at high magnetic fields. In contrast, in the low magnetic field region, magnetization curves do not agree with the ICF model. These results indicate that the Eu valence changes manifest themselves in the magnetization curves at high magnetic fields and that the magnetism of the $3d$ electrons manifests itself in the magnetization at low magnetic fields. Hence, we conclude that the valence change occurs within the Eu valence fluctuation regime coupled with the cT structure. Thereby, we believe that the transition to ucT structure which is firmly coupled with the divalent Eu state does not occur within the magnetic field range of the present study. The ferromagnetic (FM) nature of the metallic LaCo$_2$P$_2$ was investigated with the positive muon spin rotation, relaxation and resonance ($\mu^+$SR) technique. Transverse and zero field $\mu^+$SR measurements revealed that the compound enters a long range FM ground state at $T_{\rm C}=130.91(65)$~K, consistent with previous studies. Based on the reported FM structure, the internal magnetic field was computed at the muon sites, which were predicted with first principles calculations. The computed result agree well with the experimental data. Moreover, although LaCo$_2$P$_2$ is a paramagnet at higher temperatures $T>160$~K, it enters a short range ordered (SRO) magnetic phase for $T_{\rm C}

We report magnetic properties of the layered itinerant system, Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$Co$_2$P$_2$ in the magnetic field up to 70 T. As for the exchange-enhanced Pauli paramagnetic metal SrCo$_2$P$_2$, the magnetization curve shows two characteristic anomalies. The low-field anomaly is small without obvious hysteresis, and the high-field one is a typical behavior of the itinerant-electron metamagnetic transition (IEMT). Such a successive transition in the magnetization curve cannot be explained by the conventional phenomenological theory for IEMT due to the Landau expansion of the free energy, but by the extended Landau expansion theory with distinguishable two energy states. In the systematical study of Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$Co$_2$P$_2$, furthermore, the metamagnetic transition field decreases and goes to zero as $x$ increases up to 0.5, indicating that the ferromagnetic quantum critical point (QCP) exists at $x \sim 0.5$., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure, one column

A large magnetoresistance (MR) effect was observed in the layered compounds NdCoAsO and SmCoAsO, in which ferromagnetically ordered itinerant-electrons of Co are sandwiched by localized 4$f$-electrons of $Ln^{3+}$, below ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic transition (FAFT) temperature $T_\mathrm{N}$ as observed in other FAFT compounds. In SmCoAsO, the large MR effect is also observed up to the Curie temperature $T_\mathrm{C}$, and it is found to be originating in the presence of another antiferromagnetic phase in the low-magnetic field region of the ferromagnetic phase., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

We report duration dependence of superconductivity in a 43 \% humidity atmosphere and $^{59}$Co nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) of polycrystalline samples of $bi$layer hydrated Na$_x$CoO$_2 \cdot y$H$_2$O. We found a reentrant behavior of superconductivity with respect to the time duration. We obtained the universal phase diagram where two superconducting phases and an in-between magnetic phase are classified by $^{59}$Co NQR frequency. Zero field $^{59}$Co nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rates $1/T_1$ indicated a magnetic critical slowing down at 5 K in the magnetic phase, excluding a charge density wave ordering, and an enhancement at and just above $T_\mathrm{c}$ in a new superconducting phase, suggesting a coexistence of magnetic ordering., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, submitted to PRL on November 2nd 2007, revised on July 28 2010

The spin-fluctuation effect in the Se-substituted system Fe$_{1+\delta}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_x$ ($x$ = 0, 0.05, 0.12, 0.20, 0.28, 0.33, 0.45, 0.48 and 1.00; $0<\delta < 0.12$) has been studied by the measurements of the X-ray diffraction, the magnetic susceptibility under high magnetic fields and the electrical resistivity under magnetic fields up to 14 T. The samples with $x$ = 0.05, 0.12, 0.20, 0.28, 0.33, 0.45 and 0.48 show superconducting transition temperatures in the ranger of 10 K$\sim$14 K. We obtained their intrinsic susceptibilities by the Honda-Owen method. A nearly linear-in-$T$ behavior in magnetic susceptibility of superconducting samples was observed, indicating the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations have a strong link with the superconductivity in this series. The upper critical field $\mu_0H_{c2}^{orb}$ for $T\to$ 0 was estimated to exceed the Pauli paramagnetic limit. The Kadowaki-Woods and Wilson ratios indicate that electrons are strongly correlated in this system. Furthermore, the superconducting coherence length and the electron mean free path were also discussed. These superconducting parameters indicate that the superconductivity in the Fe$_{1+\delta}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_x$ system is unconventional., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

$^{75}$As and $^{139}$La field-swept NMR spectra were obtained for the novel weakly itinerant ferromagnet LaCoAsO with 2D layered structure above the Curie temperature of 55 K. By analyzing NMR spectra, temperature dependences of Knight shift $K$ and nuclear quadrupole resonance frequency $\nu_Q$ were obtained successfully for each nucleus. We confirmed from the so-called $K$-$\chi$ plots that the macroscopic magnetization of our {LaCoAsO} powder sample is intrinsic and does not contain the contribution from impurity phases. We estimated hyperfine coupling constants from the slope of $K$-$\chi$ plots and compared to that of iron-arsenide superconductor., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, published on J. Phys. Soc. We have performed $^{125}$Te NMR on a single crystal of the novel layered superconductor Fe$_{1.04}$Te$_{0.67}$Se$_{0.33}$ for the first time. The spin parts of the Knight shifts for both $H // a$, $H // c$ are suppressed in the superconducting state, indicating the spin singlet superconductivity. At superconducting state, $1/T_{1}$ shows the power-law behavior ($\sim T^{3}$) without any coherent peaks. Observations of the residual density of state and the $T^{3}$-law indicate the presence of the line node in the superconducting gap. In the normal state, $1/T_{1}T$ which probes the \textbf{q}-summation of spin fluctuations enhances at low temperatures. Our results suggest that the superconductivity in Fe$_{1+\delta}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$ is stabilized by the growth of the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations as well as in FeSe., Comment: 5 pages, 5figures

We succeeded in synthesizing the powder samples of bilayer-hydrate sodium cobalt oxide superconductors NaxCoO2-yH2O with Tc = 0 ~ 4.6 K by systematically changing the keeping duration in a 75 % relative humidity atmosphere after intercalation of water molecules. From the magnetic measurements, we found that the one-day duration sample does not show any superconductivity down to 1.8 K, and that the samples kept for 2 ~ 7 days show superconductivity, in which Tc increases up to 4.6 K with increasing the duration. Tc and the superconducting volume fraction are almost invariant between 7 days and 1month duration.
