The use of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in specific regions is still prevalent. Moreover, the impact of past utilization can be observed in the present environmental matrices. The present study monitored the extent of contamination of OCPs in the soil and vegetable samples of Gaya, Bihar, India. For this, 63 soil and vegetable samples were collected from the vegetable cultivated area of Gaya. The collected samples were extracted using a Soxhlet extraction unit and OCPs were analysed with a gas chromatography–mass spectrometry detector. The concentration data generated from the analysis were interpreted using statistical tools and software. Mean concentration (μg/g) of Σ19OCPs in soil from residential, agricultural, commercial, and polyhouse sites were 0.69, 2.21, 0.17, and 0.72, respectively. Similarly, in vegetable samples, mean concentration (μg/g) of Σ19OCPs were 0.91, 0.96, 1.00, and 0.67, respectively. Among the monitored vegetable types, the concentration of OCPs increased in the order: pods > tubers > leaves > fruits > roots > stem. The bioconcentration factor of 19 OCPs showed that 61.90% of vegetable samples were hyperaccumulators. The results of molecular diagnostic ratio and positive matrix factorization reported the recent inputs of heptachlor, aldrin, endrin and methoxychlor; the past application of dichlorodimethyltrichloroethane (DDT), endosulfan, and chlordane; and the degradation of DDT to its metabolites and aldrin to dieldrin, which make up an overall source profile of OCPs in study area. The study found that incremental lifetime cancer risks and hazard quotients ranged from 6.98 × 10–8 to 1.31 × 10–5 and 4.25 × 10–2 to 4.63 × 10–1, respectively in vegetable samples which indicate low to high ILCR and low non-carcinogenic risk to populations exposed to OCPs. The study indicates the long lasting impact of past pesticide use by studying the contamination in soil and vegetables, and raises serious concerns about food safety. The contamination poses direct health risk to consumers related to potential carcinogenic and endocrine disrupting effects. Objectives: Scientific data on the occurrence, distribution, risk and sources of endocrine disruption chemicals such as organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in herbal medicines (HMs) is rare in Nigeria. Thus, this study was conducted to assess the levels, risks and sources of OCPs in HMs from Bayelsa State, Nigeria to ascertain their safety. Methods: Fifty HMs were obtained and analyzed for OCPs using a gas chromatograph combined with an electron capture detector (GC-ECD). Results: The OCPs were detected in all the samples analyzed. The levels of ∑20 OCPs in the HMs ranged from 12.0 to 128 ng L−1 for liquid HMs, 21.2–112 ng g−1 for powder HMs and 26.0–72.7 ng g−1 for capsule HMs. The levels of OCPs obtained in these HMs were below their respective maximum residue limits (MRLs). Aldrin, γ-chlordane and β-BHC were the dominant OCPs in the liquid, powder and capsule HMs respectively. The values of both cumulative non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks for humans were < 1 and 1 × 10–6 respectively suggesting that there are no potential health risks via the ingestion of the HMs. The source identification revealed that OCPs in the HMs originated from historical and recent use confirming that the residues of these endocrine-disrupting OCPs are in continuous applications despite being banned. Conclusion: Although, the results generally indicated no current health risk implication to public consumption of the herbal medicines regarding OCP levels, however, we suggest a future risk assessment of susceptible groups, considering their concurrent exposure to all contaminants that have endocrine disrupting effects. Present study provides data of organochlorine pesticides (DDT, HCH) and polychlorinated biphenyls (28, 52, 155, 101, 118, 143, 153, 138, 180, 207 congener) content in six carp fish from Lake Khanka. Organochlorine compounds are found in all studied samples. HCHs isomers were dominant, constituting on average 70% of all pesticides detected. α-HCH content varied from 8 to 95%. Among DDTs, o,p’- and p,p’-DDE were predominant (on average 10–100 and 15–100%, respectively). PCBs content in all fish samples was primarily presented by low-chlorinated 28 and 52 congeners. Detected isomers evidence on the long-term pollution of Lake Khanka by persistent organic pollutants. Compare to southern China and Croatia, fish from Lake Khanka showed significantly higher levels of accumulation of HCH and lower levels of DDT and PCB. When comparing the data with the requirements of regulatory documents in Russia and China, no cases of exceeding maximum permissible concentrations were identified.

The current study aimed to employ integrated risk assessment models to estimate carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic human health risks of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) from Pakistan. GIS-based geostatistical technique was used to classify OCPs' polluted risk zones using risk indexes. The residual level of ∑OCPs detected in wheat and rice ranged from 1.78 to 12.46 ng g−1 and 4.92–18.19 ng g−1, respectively with the prevalence of DDD, DDE and HCH. The distribution pattern revealed a significantly higher concentration towards downstream region, suggesting industrial and agricultural activities as a pollution source in the area. In most developing countries, including Ethiopia, the excessive use of toxic and persistent pesticides for agricultural and malaria control purposes poses a significant challenge. This study focuses on evaluating the concentration and ecological risks associated with organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in the sediments of Lake Tana and Hayqe. Employing a laboratory-based cross-sectional approach, the residues of OCPs in sediment samples were extracted using the Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged, and Safe (QuEChERS) method, followed by dispersive solid phase extraction cleanup (d-SPE) techniques and analyzed for 18 OCPs by gas chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The risk Quotient (RQ) method was adopted for ecological risk assessments by using fish, daphnia, and algae as indicators. The concentration of OCPs ranged from 10.11 to 125.65 μg/kg and 10.96–45.17 μg/kg in Lake Tana and Hayqe, respectively. There was a statistically significant difference in the mean concentration of OCPs across the sampling sites in Lake Tana. Deltamethrin and lindane exhibit comparatively lower concentrations among the OCPs, whereas endrin, DDT, and their metabolites were the predominant pesticides in the study area, exceeding WHO and USEPA residue limits, except for endosulfan. Risk Quotient values ranged from 0.006 to 865.4 in Lake Tana and 0.005 to 729.9 in Lake Hayqe, indicating potential low to high ecological risks for aquatic organisms. A study was conducted on 31 surface sediments located in different sectors of the Egyptian Mediterranean coast. The sediments were analyzed for their pollution levels of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The sediments were collected from various depths in harbors, coastal lakes, bays, and lagoons, covering the southeastern Mediterranean of the Nile Delta region. The study aimed at determining the distribution, origin, and potential ecological impact of OCP and PCB pollutants. The researchers used the SRM method of GC‐MS/MS to measure the concentration of 18 PCBs and 16 OCPs residues. The study found that the total concentration of OCPs in the samples ranged from 3.091 to 20.512 ng/g, with a mean of 8.749 ± 3.677 ng/g. The total concentration of PCB residues ranged from 2.926 to 20.77 ng/g, with a mean of 5.68 ± 3.282 ng/g. The concentration of DDTs exceeded the effect range low (ERL) (1.00) and threshold effect level (TEL) (1.19) in several stations, but it was still below the effect range median (ERM) (7.00) and the probable effect level (PEL) (4.77). The practice of exposing honeybees to pesticides by bee-keepers or via agricultural crops, is one of the ways in which honey becomes contaminated with pesticides. Though honey has many health advantages, however, human exposure to pesticides via consumption of honey has generated public health concerns due to their endocrine-disruptive abilities. Thus, this study evaluated human exposure to endocrine-disrupting pesticides in honey from Nigeria to establish the safety of honey consumed in Nigeria. Honey were analyzed for pesticides using a gas chromatograph combined with an electron capture detector. The concentrations of ∑20 OCPs and ∑14 OPPs in the honey ranged from 0.45-1045 ng/g and 1.13-632 ng/g respectively. The values of both individual and cumulative non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks for humans were <1 and 1 × 10−4 respectively suggesting that there are no potential health risks via the honey consumption. Willow barks were collected for OCP analyses in the middle reach of the Huaihe River (MRHR), China. ΣOCPs in the tree barks were 16.00-50.35 ng g-1 (mean: 27.60±7.48 ng g-1, dry weight). HCHs were the dominant OCPs in the bark samples. The historical usage of technical HCH and DDT considerably impacted the HCHs and DDTs in the barks. Heptachlor, Aldrin, Isodrin, etc., have never been used in China, but they were frequently detected in the barks, indicating their unknown usage or atmospheric transportation from other source regions. Volumetric air concentrations of OCPs were estimated using a model for bark/air partitioning. Calculated air concentrations of ΣDDTs and ΣHCHs were 0.16±0.04 and 10.38±4.13 ng m-3, respectively. The results of air-soil exchange were: HCB, HCHs, and Heptachlor presented net volatilization; DDTs preferred net deposition; Endosulfan-I and Endosulfan-II might be in equilibrium or presented a weak trend of deposition; and Aldrin was in equilibrium. Water contamination with organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) is strongly linked to agricultural practices, and it still represents an environmental issue, despite the OCPs bans in many countries and despite the reported sustainable remediation technologies for their removal. Considering the environmental persistence of OCPs, the imbalances produced in the ecosystem, and the bioaccumulation tendency in living organisms through the food chain, the monitoring of OCPs and of their metabolites has crucial importance. The accuracy of the results obtained is strongly connected to the selection of reliable and accurate analytical procedures, especially considering the multitude of challenges related to OCP quantification. The purpose of this paper is to present an overview of the analytical techniques and protocols reported for OCP assessment in water, and to offer scientists a presentation of the current state of the literature on this subject. Nevertheless, it must be considered that each method has advantages and disadvantages, and, in most cases, the protocols reported in the literature must be adapted and improved. In addition, the levels of OCPs identified in surface water, groundwater, and rainwater have been reviewed. This review paper is directly connected to sustainability practices, since environmental sustainability is related to the responsibility to conserve natural resources and to prevent pollution, and for scientists, these objectives are fulfilled by conducting chemical analyses to track and quantify pollutants, as part of environmental studies. The present study has employed an advanced GIS based statistical technique for spatial interpolation of lifetime carcinogenic risk to OCPs in water and sediments from tributaries of River Chenab. The findings revealed that among all detected isomers, DDT exhibited the highest concentrations (mean 14.41 ng/l: range 9.33 – 20.21 ng/l and mean 16.47 ng/l: range 10.55 – 21.24 ng/g) for water and sediment, respectively. Results of OCPs fingerprints revealed the presence of dicofol confirmed fresh input of OCPs isomers along with the DDTs (Dichloro-diphenyl trichloroethane) historical usages in water bodies. The evaluation of ecological risk to benthic organisms’ fish, daphnia and green algae (RQ 2 × 102) indicated that DDTs (DDD, DDE) pose potential hazardous risks (>1) to fish species across all the studied sites. Moreover, Spatial interpolation of the lifetime carcinogenic risk denoted the sites along downstream zone surpassed the permissible limit. The non-carcinogenic risk (∑HQ) ranged from 2 × 10-3 – 1.0 with the highest value for DDT, indicating DDT as a potential hazard through oral exposure (∑HQ≥1). In the case of sediments results of SQGQs (Sediment Quality Guideline Quotient) levels for DDE (Dichloro-diphenyldichloromethane) and DDD (Dichloro-diphenyl dichloroethylene) denoted a severe biological risk to ecological integrities. The findings comprehend the more inclusive monitoring of OCPs usage and distribution in the studied region to reduce risks ecological integrities and to promote good health and wellbeing’s.

The ambient air quality during COVID-19 lockdowns has been improved in many cities in the world. This study is to assess the changes in persistent organic pollutants in PM2.5 during the COVID-19 lockdown in Hanoi. Individual organic species in PM2.5 ((e.g., polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorobiphenyls (PCBs), and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs)) were measured in an urban residential area in Hanoi from before the March 10th to April 22nd, 2020, including before the partial lockdown (BL) and the partial lockdown (PL) phases. During the PL phase, the concentration of Σ14PAHs and Σ28PCBs was reduced by 38 and 52% compared with the BL period, respectively. The diagnostic ratio method implied that the sources of PAHs within the PL phase had a less effect on traffic and industrial activities than in the BL phase. The characteristic ratio method indicated that PCBs were mixed by commercial product and combustion process in both the BL and the PL periods, however, the source of PCBs in the BL phase was influenced by municipal waste incineration more than those in the PL phase. The decreasing concentration of Σ20OCPs during the partial lockdown was attributed to the restriction of human activities during the quarantine period. The results suggested that the source of OCPs was probably derived from the usage of pesticides in current and, historical degradation or the transportation of pesticides from the soil to the atmosphere. Background: Oral contraceptive pills (OCPs)s are usually used for childbirth control. However, some studies showed unforeseen uses for them, including trials to adulterate the results of illicit drug tests. Objective: We examined the effects of OCPs on masking the appearance of Pregabalin and diazepam in a urine drug screening kit. As well. the behavioral consequences of Pregabalin and diazepam with or without OCP were examined using rotarod and hot plate tests. Methods: A total of 60 male Wester Albino rats were randomly divided into six groups: (a) a control group (untreated), (b) a group given pregabalin alone, (c) a group given diazepam alone, (d) a group given OCP (Microgynon® (Levonorgestrel/Ethinylestradiol)) alone, (e) a group given pregabalin with OCP, and finally (f) a group given diazepam with OCP. A urine drug screening kit was used to determine the presence and absence of illicit drugs. Rotarod and hot plate tests were also used to assess the impact of OCP use on behavior among the tested groups. Results: Urine screening test showed a confirmed drug detection in Pregabalin group, Diazepam group, and Pregabalin/Microgynon group, while Diazepam/Microgynon group showed uncertain presence nor absence of diazepam in the urine. Rotarod and hot plate tests showed that Microgynon did not significantly affect the pregabalin-treated group, whereas a slight difference was observed in the diazepam-treated group. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that OCPs did not affect the detection of illicit drugs in the urine immunoassay tests; however, they may contribute to invalid results among specific abused drugs. Future studies are needed to understand the rationale behind the improper use of OCPs to mask illicit drug detection. The present work aims to study the efficiency of root exudates of Sudan grass on the degradation of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and the consequent impact on the microbial and ecological characteristics of the soil, including population composition, quantity dynamics, and community structure. Pot experiments were carried out to study the effect of root exudates on the degradation of OCPs at initial concentrations ranging from 66.67 to 343.61 mg/kg. In addition, the influence of root exudates on the rhizosphere microbial growth and their community structure was studied by monitoring the microbial biomass carbon, microbial biomass nitrogen, and phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs) in the soils. In the range of OCP content (66.67 ~ 343.61 mg/kg), the soil-microbial system mediated by root exudates significantly promoted the removal of OCP pollutants. The removal rate of OCPs in the rhizosphere soil (TR2) was as high as 79.32%, 36.86% higher than that in the OCP-contaminated group (TR1) and 60.63% higher than that in the sterilized treatment group (CK). Under the same treatment conditions (pollution level and additive dose), the enhanced removal rate of HCHs, toxaphene, HCB, aldrin, and γ-chlordane by root exudates was much higher than the total amount of OCPs, while the extent of enhanced dissipation of DDTs, mirex, endosulfanI, dieldrin, and heptachlor epoxide was always lower than that in the corresponding soils. During the experiment, the phospholipid fatty acid content of bacteria was dominant, followed by that of fungi, and their variation trend was consistent with the degradation characteristics of OCPs in soil. Root exudates of Sudan grass might change the rhizosphere bacterial and fungal community structure during the process of phytoremediation, leading to enhanced OCP degradation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A sedimentary record of the 19 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) pollutants from Dongping Lake, north China, is presented in this study. According to the dating of core sediment and OCP content analysis in samples, from 1904 to 2016, the total concentration of OCPs varied from undetectable levels (n.d.) to 33.1 ng/g. The OCP concentration was first detected in the samples of 1938, and then gradually increased to a peak level in 2000 thereafter decreased until 2016. Among the detected OCPs, hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs) and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs) were the predominant and the most frequently detected contaminants in the core sediment, with concentrations ranging from n.d. to 16.9 ng/g and from n.d. to 8.8 ng/g, respectively. The distribution of OCPs in the sediments was affected by organic carbon concentration, showing a significant positive correlation (r = 0.93, p < 0.001), especially for HCHs (r = 0.98, p < 0.001). The source analysis showed that HCH contamination mainly derived from historical use of technical HCHs, while in recent years, it derived from lindane usage. DDT pollution was attributed to historical use of technical DDTs, as well as the microbial degradation of historic DDT residues. Finally, risk analysis was performed for OCPs in sediment cores based on sediment quality guidelines from the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment, showing that DDTs presented a high ecological toxicity risk during the period of 1959–2010. The objectives of this study were to assess concentrations of three groups of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in 44 fish oil-based food supplements, to estimate their daily intake by consumers and, to evaluate the compliance of the oil samples with the oil origin declarations (cod liver oil or fish oil). The concentrations of ∑PCBs (7 congeners), OCPs (19 compounds, represented mainly by ∑DDTs), ∑PBDEs (10 congeners), and ∑PAHs (16 compounds) found in samples ranged between 0.15–55.7 µg kg−1, 0.93–72.8 µg kg−1, 0.28–27.5 µg kg−1, and 0.32–51.9 µg kg−1, respectively. Besides, the authenticity of the oils was assessed based on the fingerprints obtained by DART–HRMS, an ambient mass spectrometry technique. Four samples declared as fish oil were probably prepared from cod liver oil, which is much cheaper. Black-crowned night heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) eggs have been identified as useful indicators for biomonitoring the environmental pollution in China. In this study, we investigated thirty eggs of black-crowned night heron collected from the upper Yangtze River (Changjiang) Basin, Southwest China, for the occurrence of legacy persistent organic pollutants (POPs), including polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). Our results showed a general presence of POPs in night heron eggs with OCPs being the dominant contaminants, having a geometric mean concentration of 22.2 ng g−1 wet weight (ww), followed by PCBs (1.36 ng g−1 ww), PBDEs (0.215 ng g−1 ww), and PCDD/Fs (23.0 pg g−1 ww). The concentration levels were found to be significantly higher in night heron eggs than in poultry eggs by one or two magnitude orders. Among OCP congeners, p,p′-DDE was found to be predominant in night heron eggs, with a geometric mean concentration of 15.1 ng g−1 ww. Furthermore, species-specific congener patterns in eggs suggested similar or different sources for different POPs, possibly associated with contaminated soil and parental dietary sources. Additionally, estimated daily intakes (EDIs) were used to evaluate non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk associated with consumption of bird eggs. In surficial sediments of Lake Piediluco, a small, riverine, regulated and heavily modified water body in the Central Italian Apennines, contamination by persistent organochlorine pollutants (POPs) was assessed. During spring and autumn, six representative points were investigated. Reflecting a substantial zonation of pollution within this aquatic ecosystem, concentrations were found to vary from site to site. OCPs, particularly DDT and its metabolites DDE and DDD, were detected at varying frequencies and concentrations from 0.301 to 8.185 ng/g d.w., whilst total PCBs (Σ50 congeners) were from 0.570 to 10.206 ng/g d.w. Although both PCB congener-specific and homolog patterns suggest a prevalent presence of Aroclors 1254 and 1260, a more limited likely contribution of 1248 technical mixture is not to be excluded. In the western area of the lake, affected daily by continuous basin water remixing for hydroelectricity production, major seasonal differences in OCP concentrations were found. Conversely, the eastern area was typified by low seasonal fluctuation and small variation among sites. Regardless of either collection site or seasonality, polychlorinated-p-dioxin and furan (PCDD/Fs) contamination were below 8.3 pg WHO-TEQ/g. In contrast to the present study, POP pollution from PCBs, PCDD/Fs and some DDT-derived pollutants has not been investigated so far. Nevertheless, the concentrations are typical of low-polluted or pristine area lakes and are consistently lower than those of other Italian lakes of greater size and depth (e.g., Como, Garda and Maggiore). The physical and chemical properties of investigated analytes are more consistent with probable diffuse point source contamination originating from the catchment area, rather than from atmospheric depositions by regional or long-range transports. Finally, according to the international sediment quality guidelines (SQGs), Piediluco sediments pose a low risk to sediment-dwelling organisms and, more generally, to the wildlife of such aquatic ecosystems. In the Chinese city of Wuchang, Heilongjiang Province, a survey was conducted to track the concentrations and distributions of several organic pollutants near drinking water reservoirs, such as conventional organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and currently in use pesticides (CUPs), including organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) and neutral herbicides (NHs). From October 2007 to July 2008, a total of 32 pairs of water and sediment samples were gathered and examined. The results showed that the total concentrations of OCPs, OPPs, and NHs in the sediments were 0.42–7.8 ng/dm3 below the detection limit of these pollutants in sediments. The total concentration of OPPs in the water varied from the LoD to 180 ng/dm3 while NHs were 6.3 to 740 ng/dm3. While the CUP concentrations changed significantly throughout the year, the OCP concentrations were less impacted by seasonal fluctuations, indicating no recent introduction of these chemicals. The widespread application of pesticides in the territories of the former USSR still exerts negative impacts on their ecological status. In this regard, dedicated programs for monitoring persistent organic pollutants (POP) in humans are implemented in several countries. Our study aimed to assess the accumulation of organic pollutants in breast milk of women residing the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug (CAO). Organochlorine pesticides (OCP) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) concentrations in breast milk samples were measured by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). The POP concentrations in the samples varied from 13 ng/g lipid weight (lw) to 620.6 ng/g lw (median 58.3 ng/g lw). An assessment of health risk to infants fed breast milk from CAO women did not show any exceedance of the estimated daily intake (EDI). The Arctic region, including Svalbard, faces unique environmental challenges from the presence and persistence of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), pollutants known for their long-range atmospheric transport and potential local sources. In Svalbard, the melting of sea ice and glaciers due to climate change may release OCPs trapped over decades, while human activities in the area could contribute additional local contamination. This study aimed to identify and quantify different sources of OCPs in soil and marine sediments at Svalbard. Samples were collected from Kongsfjorden, Rijpfjorden, and in Ny-Ålesund. The concentrations of 23 OCPs in sediments sampled were in the range of 0.36–0.90 ng/g, which were lower than those in the soils from Ny-Ålesund (0.28 ng/g to 3.6 ng/g). The highest OCP levels were detected at locations near the research station in Ny-Ålesund, where local contamination from research activities, mining, and dumpsites could occur. Hexachlorobenzene (HCB) were the most prominent compound, followed by various DDTs and HCHs. Dignostic ratios and the Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) model were employed to determine the primary sources of OCPs. The results from modeling showed that historically used pollutants were the primary contributor, accounting for 90% of OCPs present, while recently input OCPs were a minor contributor. However, newly input pollutants significantly contributed to HCHs (43%). It is suggested that the contribution of legacy OCPs mainly comes from the melting of sea ice and glaciers. This was especially true for Rijpfjorden (95%), while it was also significant for Kongsfjorden (55%). The local contamination and fresh inputs played a substantial role in the area near the research station in Ny-Ålesund. The study emphasizes the importance of secondly source, especially the role of melting sea ice and glaciers as well as local contaminations as sources of OCPs in Svalbard's marine sediment, which highlight the urgent need to address the impact of climate change on the Arctic environment. Although organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) have been banned or restricted for years, they remain significant contaminants posing health risks in some places where are favorable for their enrichment, such as areas with high latitude or altitudes. However, the elucidation of environmental risks and the establishment of a clear relationship between these risks and human health are areas that remain significantly underdeveloped. Literatures on the concentrations of OCPs and PCBs in soil of the Tibetan Plateau were reviewed to calculate local health risk indexes and create risk maps. A food chain model (ACC-Human) was applied to predict human body concentrations of these chemicals. Higher risk areas are located in the southeastern Tibetan Plateau, suggesting influences from potential emissions in adjacent regions and long-range transport. Based on the concentration-risk relationships, the most toxic chemicals identified were PCBs, with a body concentration threshold as low as 13 ng/g lipid. Given the ongoing emissions from industrial production or historical legacy, it is hightime to lay a particular focus on PCBs in mountainous areas like the Tibetan Plateau. The concentrations of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were evaluated in snails from different locations in the Niger Delta of Nigeria to provide data about their sources and possible risk to humans from the consumption of snails. The OCP and PBDE concentrations in snail samples ranged from 0.31 to 12.2 ng g−1 and 0.71 to 10.9 ng g−1, respectively. The distribution patterns indicated the dominance of chlordanes and penta-BDEs for OCPs and PBDEs, respectively. The hazard index and total cancer risk values for human exposure to OCPs and PBDEs through consumption of these snails were less than 1 and 10−6 (acceptable risk values), respectively, indicating unlikely adverse health effects. The isomer ratios of OCPs in these snails reflected both historical and recent contamination, while the distribution patterns of PBDEs in these snails indicated sources linked to the use of the penta-BDE and octa-BDE formulations rather than the deca-BDE mixture in this region. In recent years there have been growing environmental concern, especially regarding the utilisation and discharge of toxic substances. Many organic pollutants are detected in aquatic ecosystems such as pesticides. Because they are large-scale production and usage, toxicity, bioaccumulation, and persistence in the environment, they cause harmful effects to organisms and human health. The Medjerda River is one among the main rivers in Tunisia and a number of other studies addressed the importance of this river regarding ecology, geochemistry, and sociology. The organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were investigated in surface water samples from eight sampling sites in the Medjerda River. The extraction of water samples was performed by liquid-liquid extraction with hexane. Gas chromatography coupled to the mass spectrum (GC-MS) was used to perform qualitative and quantitative determinations. The levels of OCPs in water varied between 4.41 ng g−1 and 29.04 ng g−1. The Hexachlorobenzene (HCB) and ∑DDT are the most dominant compounds in different sampling sites. Distribution of HCB, ∑DDT, and other OCPs are different indicating different sources of contamination. The concentrations of OCPs in the water pose no threat to human and aquatic living species. The Akkar plain is the second largest agricultural area in Lebanon. This region produces huge amount of regular crops such as maize, fruits, and vegetables. In order to protect the crops, farmers use large quantities of many pesticides (including authorized and prohibited molecules) without respecting the recommended doses. In this work, we wanted to study the evolution of OCP and OPP residues at 3-year intervals in water wells in the Akkar region. Twenty OCPs and 8 OPPs were monitored in eight wells in different villages in the plain and mountains of Akkar. Solid phase extraction (SPE) method was used for pesticide extraction, followed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) analysis. The results revealed an increasing concentration of OCPs and OPPs in groundwater over the last 3 years (between 2017 and 2019–2020). This increase in contamination is due to the uncontrolled and still unregulated (by the authorities) use of pesticides, and also to the introduction of new crops. The concentrations found in groundwater confirm that some banned pesticides are still widely used. The calculation of the theoretical pesticide intake suggests that pesticide concentrations in Akkar represent a greater health risk for the population consuming well water during the rainy season. This study was carried out to evaluate organochlorinated pesticide (OCPs) concentrations in the water column and sediments of İznik Lake. Water samples and sediment were collected in different regions (six sampling sites) of the lake between January and December 2019 and tested for OCPs by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS). The results revealed that OCP residues throughout the sites varied depending on the anthropogenic activities of the region. OCPs detected in surface waters ranged from 0.01 to 60.80 μg/L and sediments from 0.06 to 14.21 ng/g dw. Endrin ketone, endrin aldehyde, endosulfan II, endrin, heptachlor epoxy, beta-BHC, gamma-BHC, ppDDD, and ppDDT concentrations exceeded the maximum residue limits indicated by the World Health Organization (WHO) for surface waters. Of the 18 analyzed OCP components, 17 were detected in sediment samples, and it was noted that they reached the highest concentration in summer. The presence of relatively high OCP levels according to WHO regulations in the waters of İznik Lake, around which agricultural activities have been increasing rapidly in recent years, is a serious concern, and therefore, appropriate actions should be taken into consideration by the regulatory authorities. Organochlorines pesticides (OCPs) are persistent organic pollutants known by their persistence, their ability to bioaccumulate in the food chain and by their toxicity. This work aims to analyze pesticides in draining water samples taken from two different regions from Tunisia. A liquid-liquid extraction method proposed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been adopted for the extraction of OCPs from draining water. The analysis of these compounds was carried out with a gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. Eight draining water sample was analyzed from the region of Kebili and levels of OCPs ranged between ND and 3.415 ng L−1. Four draining water samples were sampled from the region of Cap Bon and levels of OCPs in draining water varied between 14.955 and 59.305 ng L−1. The concentration of OCPs in draining water didn't exceed the limits standardized by the regulations for drainage water, which makes possible the reuse of this water for agricultural purposes after having undergone a secondary treatment. Kazakhstan is facing environmental problems with the large amounts of residual prohibited obsolete pesticides. More than 1500 tons of banned, obsolete pesticides and mixtures of unknown composition have been disclosed distributed throughout Kazakhstan in store houses that are abandoned, in partially or completely demolished states. However, these locations still contain significant amounts of these banned substances that have been (and presumably still are) widely used. The present study focusses on potential problems associated with former pesticide storehouses in the Almaty oblast (region) that due to significant agricultural activities is of particular concern. DDTs and HCHs are found in samples from storehouses in 9 districts of the Almaty oblast. Variations in concentrations are associated with different degradation pathways that have been studied applying ternary plots. The highest concentrations of p,p′-DDT, p,p′-DDD, and p,p′-DDE in soil samples exceed the Kazakh maximum allowable concentration (MAC) by factors of 65, 19, and 21, respectively, whereas for the HCHs isomers, α-HCH, β-HCH, and γ-HCH in soil samples the Kazakh MAC value was exceeded by factors of 12, 45, and 4.4, respectively. Analyses of the cancer risk showed that for both DDTs and HCHs the risk mainly occurs from ingestion of soil, whereas inhalation and dermal contact exposure contributes to a minor extent only. Freely dissolved OCPs and PCBs were measured by using polyethylene passive samplers at 15 sites during 2014 throughout the stretch of the Indus River to investigate the spatial pattern and risk assess. Levels (pg/L) of dissolved ∑OCPs and ∑PCBs ranged from 34 to 1600 and from 3 to 230. Among the detected OCPs, dissolved DDTs (p,p′-DDE, followed by p,p′-DDT) predominated with levels of 0.48 to 220 pg/L. The order of occurrence for other studied OCPs was as follows: HCB, endosulfans, chlordanes, and HCHs. Spatially, dissolved (pg/L) ∑OCPs varied (p < 0.05) as the following: surface water of the alluvial riverine zone (ARZ) showed the highest levels (114) followed by the frozen mountain zone (FMZ) (52.9), low-lying zone (LLZ) (28.73), and wet mountain zone (WMZ) (14.43), respectively. However, our zone-wise PCB data did not exhibit significant differences (p > 0.05). Principal component analysis/multilinear regression results showed pesticide usage in the crop/orchard fields and health sector, electric and electronic materials, and widespread industrial activities as the main source of OCPs and PCBs along the Indus River. Our results showed that OCPs and PCBs contaminated water intake, playing an important role towards the considerable cancer/non-cancer risk (HI and CR values) along the Indus River Flood-Plain. Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are lipophilic and persistent compounds, with chronic toxicity that cause negative effects on the environment and organisms. The chlorpyrifos is an organophosphate insecticide and represent the main insecticide currently used in many countries. The concentrations of OCPs, PCBs, and chlorpyrifos were evaluated in liver, muscle, and gonad of females and males of Tadarida brasiliensis in an agricultural production area in Argentina. Pollutants were quantified by gas chromatography with electron capture detection. The general total concentration pattern among tissues was gonad > muscle > liver, with a higher ratio of pesticides (OCPs + chlorpyrifos) over PCBs in muscle and liver, while gonads showed higher concentrations of PCBs. The predominance of DDTs and endosulfans evidences the bioavailability of these compounds despite their use has ceased. Chlorpyrifos was the main pesticide detected in almost all samples of both sexes, probably due to its current intensive use. The objective of this work was to determine the spatial distribution and temporal trend (2010–2019) of organochlorine compounds (OCs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), in wild mussels from several Galician Rías (estuaries). Some of them, like the northernmost estuaries, were studied for the first time. OCs were determined by GC-ECD and confirmed by GC-MS/MS. SPCB levels (sum of PCBs 31, 28, 52, 101, 118, 153, 105, 138, 156, 180) were found in the range 7.2–263.1 ng/g dw (dry weight) and SDDt levels (sum of pp´- DDT, op´-DDT, pp´-DDE and pp´-DDD) in the range 2.5–18.8 ng/g dw. PCB levels were below European limits. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed some relationship between of OC levels and biological parameters (lipid content and condition index). Principal component analysis (PCA) reported a geographical characterization of Rías Altas and Rías Baixas and relationships between PCB congeners that revealed a similar pattern of entry. Legal restrictions on the production and use of PCBs and OCPs have led to a steady decline in OCs over the period under study (2010–2019).
