In lizards there is considerable variation in the ability to dissipate environmental/endogenous heat loads through evaporative cooling via panting, which effects how long lizards can spend exposed to high solar heat loads. We recently described the differing capacities of lizards to depress body temperature (Tb) through evaporative cooling via panting. Here, we link panting and Tb depression with rates of evaporative water loss and its metabolic costs under high heat loads. We used flow-through respirometry to measure evaporative water loss rates and metabolism of 17 lizard species from the American Southwest while simultaneously measuring Tb. We exposed lizards to air temperatures (Ta) ranging from 35°C to their critical thermal maximum (CTmax) while marking the onset of panting. We then estimated pre-panting Q10 values for metabolism to partition increases in metabolism associated with the van't Hoff effect from the mechanical cost of panting with increasing heat loads. We found that evaporative cooling costs substantially varied among species, with panting effort significantly affecting lizards' evaporative capacity. Lizard evaporation rates ranged from 0.32 to 1.5 g H2O h−1, with individuals losing as much as 6% h−1 of body mass while panting. Lizards also experienced an increase of up to 7.9-fold in metabolic rate while panting, although the overall energetic costs of panting remained relatively low compared with evaporative water costs. Across species, there was a significant positive relationship between the overall rate of evaporative heat loss and the maximum Ta–Tb gradient a species could maintain. While evaporative cooling may be an effective mechanism for reducing Tb and extending activity in hot environments for many species, it has significant metabolic and water balance costs that should be considered, as habitats with high environmental heat loads can be especially costly to an animal's water budgets.

Mechanically robust bulk antimicrobial polymers are one way to address disease transmission via contaminated surfaces. Here, we demonstrate the visible light photo-oxidative cross-linking of amine-containing PDMS using a single-component, solvent-free system where amines have a dual role as antimicrobial functionalities and cross-linking sites. Rose Bengal, a xanthene dye used as a fluorescent stain, is thermally reacted with the polymer to give a solvent-free liquid siloxane that can generate reactive singlet oxygen upon aerobic green light irradiation, coupling the amine functionalities into imine cross-links. Photorheological experiments demonstrate that light intensity is the largest kinetic factor in the photo-oxidative curing of these polymers. Room temperature irradiation under an ambient atmosphere results in free-standing elastic materials with mechanical properties that depend on the amount of Rose Bengal present. An ultimate elongation strain of 117% and Young's modulus of 2.15 MPa were observed for the highest dye loading, with both mechanical properties found to be higher than those for the same solution-based dye amounts. We demonstrate that the solvent-free nature of the material can be exploited to generate 3D structures using low-temperature deposition as well as direct-write patterning and photolithography on glass substrates. The antimicrobial activity was investigated, with the cross-linked material demonstrating greater efficacy against E. coli (Gram negative) compared with MRSA (Gram positive) bacterial strains and inducing complete cell lysis of incubated CHO-K1 mammalian cells, demonstrating applicability as a mechanically robust single-component antimicrobial elastomer.

Hemithioindigos are emerging photoswitches that have been found to undergo either [2+2] cycloaddition or reversible photoisomerization reactions. In this work we present a hemithioindigo photoswitch modified with an anthracene moiety, 2-[(anthracen-9-yl)methylidene]-2,3-dihydro-1-benzothiophen-3-one (HTI-An) and report the responses to thermal and light stimulation. In solution and in the crystalline state, HTI-An was found to selectively undergo a reversible Z–E photoisomerization reaction. Upon exposure of crystals of (Z)-HTI-An to UV light a photochromic effect is observed, while heating at 130 °C prompted a phase transition coupled to a thermosalient response. Upon visible light exposure, (E)-HTI-An crystals undergo a photosalient response, where heating to 180 °C induces thermal isomerization reversion while preserving the crystal structural integrity. Thus, HTI-An is an example of a photosalient and thermosalient responsive photoswitch adding to the library of stimuli responsive mechanical compounds.

Two-component crystalline organic alloys with a wide range of compositional ratios (from 30% to 90% of one component) are employed to tune excited-state lifetimes and photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs). Alloy crystals exhibit homogeneous distribution of parent compounds by X-ray crystallography and differential scanning calorimetry. The alloys display a 1.5- to 5-fold enhancement in thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) lifetime, compared to the parent compounds. PLQYs can also be tuned by changing alloy composition. The reverse intersystem crossing and long-lived lifetime of the parent compounds give rise to long-lived TADF in the alloys. Organic alloys enable tunability of both lifetime and efficiency, providing a new perspective on the development of organic long-lived emissive materials beyond the rules established for host-guest doped systems.

Small mammals in hot deserts often avoid heat via nocturnality and fossoriality, and are thought to have a limited capacity to dissipate heat using evaporative cooling. Research to date has focused on thermoregulatory responses to air temperatures (Ta) below body temperature (Tb). Consequently, the thermoregulatory performance of small mammals exposed to high Ta is poorly understood, particularly responses across geographic and seasonal scales. We quantified the seasonal thermoregulatory performance of four cricetid rodents (Neotoma albigula, Neotoma lepida, Peromyscus eremicus, Peromyscus crinitus) exposed to high Ta, at four sites in the Mojave Desert. We measured metabolism, evaporative water loss and Tb using flow-through respirometry. When exposed to Ta≥Tb, rodents showed steep increases in Tb, copious salivation and limited evaporative heat dissipation. Most individuals were only capable of maintaining Ta–Tb gradients of ∼1°, resulting in heat tolerance limits (HTLs) in the range Ta=43–45°C. All species exhibited a thermoneutral Tb of ∼35–36°C, and Tb increased to maximal levels of ∼43°C. Metabolic rates and rates of evaporative water loss increased steeply in all species as Ta approached Tb. We also observed significant increases in resting metabolism and evaporative water loss from summer to winter at Ta within and above the thermoneutral zone. In contrast, we found few differences in the thermoregulatory performance within species across sites. Our results suggest that cricetid rodents have a limited physiological capacity to cope with environmental temperatures that exceed Tb and that a rapidly warming environment may increasingly constrain their nocturnal activity.

Bulk crystallization in flexible polymeric systems is difficult to control due to the random orientation of the chains. Here we report a photo cross-linking strategy that results in simultaneous cross-linking and crystallization of polysiloxane chains into millimeter sized leaf-like polycrystalline structures. Polymers containing pendant anthracene groups are prepared and undergo [4+4] photocycloaddition under 365 nm irradiation at room temperature. The growth and morphology of the crystalline structures is studied using polarized optical microscopy (POM) and atomic force microscopy and is found to progress through three unique stages of nucleation, growth, and constriction. The mobility of the individual chains is probed using pulsed-field gradient (PFG) NMR to provide insights into the diffusion processes that may govern chain transport to the growing crystal fronts. The room temperature crystallization of this conventionally amorphous polymer system may allow for a new level of morphological control for silicone materials., Millimeter sized polymer crystallites grow rapidly when anthracene-containing siloxanes are photocrosslinked using UV light.

Simple structural modifications using oxidation and methylation of a quinoline-containing diarylethene result in dramatic variation of photophysical properties. Turn-on fluorescence, room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) and red-green-blue (RGB) switching were achieved in three different related compounds. Photoswitchable diarylethenes (DAEs) that exhibit turn-on fluorescence are in high demand for super-resolution microscopy, and the development of purely organic phosphorescent materials in the amorphous state is attractive but challenging. The findings reported here provide a novel toolkit for designing turn-on fluorescence DAEs for super-resolution microscopy and extending the scope of amorphous RTP materials. More importantly, we bridge between these two fundamentally significant photochemical and photophysical phenomena, and reveal structure–property relationships between DAE photochromism and RTP., Simple structural modifications using oxidation and methylation of a quinoline-containing diarylethene result in dramatic variation of photophysical properties.

The development of low-cost, non-toxic, scalable antimicrobial textiles is needed to address the spread of deadly pathogens. Here, we report a polysiloxane textile coating that possesses two modes of antimicrobial inactivation, passive contact inactivation through amine/imine functionalities and active photodynamic inactivation through the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). This material can be coated and cross-linked onto natural and synthetic textiles through a simple soak procedure, followed by UV cure to afford materials exhibiting no aqueous leaching and only minimal leaching in organic solvents. This coating minimally impacts the mechanical properties of the fabric while also imparting hydrophobicity. Passive inactivation of Escherichia coli (E. coli) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is achieved with >98% inactivation after 24 h, with a 23× and 3× inactivation rate increase against E. coli and MRSA, respectively, when green light is used to generate ROS. Up to 90% decrease in the infectivity of SARS-CoV-2 after 2 h of irradiated incubation with the material is demonstrated. These results show that modifying textiles with dual-functional polymers results in robust and highly antimicrobial materials that are expected to find widespread use in combating the spread of deadly pathogens.

Intense heat waves are occurring more frequently, with concomitant increases in the risk of catastrophic avian mortality events via lethal dehydration or hyperthermia. We quantified the risks of lethal hyperthermia and dehydration for 10 Australian arid-zone avifauna species during the 21st century, by synthesizing thermal physiology data on evaporative water losses and heat tolerance limits. We evaluated risks of lethal hyperthermia or exceedance of dehydration tolerance limits in the absence of drinking during the hottest part of the day under recent climatic conditions, compared to those predicted for the end of this century across Australia. Increases in mortality risk via lethal dehydration and hyperthermia vary among the species modelled here but will generally increase greatly, particularly in smaller species (~10–42 g) and those inhabiting the far western parts of the continent. By 2100 CE, zebra finches’ potential exposure to acute lethal dehydration risk will reach ~ 100 d y−1 in the far northwest of Australia and will exceed 20 d y−1 over > 50% of this species’ current range. Risks of dehydration and hyperthermia will remain much lower for large non-passerines such as crested pigeons. Risks of lethal hyperthermia will also increase substantially for smaller species, particularly if they are forced to visit exposed water sources at very high air temperatures to avoid dehydration. An analysis of atlas data for zebra finches suggests that population declines associated with very hot conditions are already occurring in the hottest areas. Our findings suggest that the likelihood of persistence within current species ranges, and the potential for range shifts, will become increasingly constrained by temperature and access to drinking water. Our model adds to an increasing body of literature suggesting that arid environments globally will experience considerable losses of avifauna and biodiversity under unmitigated climate change scenarios.

Continued improvements on existing reconstruction methods are vital to the success of high-energy physics experiments, such as the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. In IceCube, further challenges arise as the detector is situated at the geographic South Pole where computational resources are limited. However, to perform real-time analyses and to issue alerts to telescopes around the world, powerful and fast reconstruction methods are desired. Deep neural networks can be extremely powerful, and their usage is computationally inexpensive once the networks are trained. These characteristics make a deep learning-based approach an excellent candidate for the application in IceCube. A reconstruction method based on convolutional architectures and hexagonally shaped kernels is presented. The presented method is robust towards systematic uncertainties in the simulation and has been tested on experimental data. Understanding the heat tolerances of small mammals and birds has taken on new urgency with the advent of climate change. Here, we review heat tolerance limits, pathways of evaporative heat dissipation that permit the defense of body temperature during heat exposure, and mechanisms operating at tissue, cellular, and molecular levels.

A class of intramolecular Lewis acid-base pairs containing Lewis acidic dimesitylboranes paired with phosphine oxide, sulfoxide, and sulfone Lewis basic groups are explored. The absorption and emission properties of the compounds are investigated in different solvent environments, and switching of the photophysical behavior between the Lewis acid-base adducts and free acid-base pairs is examined. We find that phosphine oxide Lewis base groups are effective partners in flexible Lewis pairs; however, the analogous sulfoxide and sulfone groups are not. Additionally, the absorption and emission wavelengths can be systematically tuned by varying the conjugation length and electron-donating and -accepting substituents on the backbone.

Covalently tethered bichromophores provide an ideal proving ground to develop strategies for controlling excited state behavior in chromophore assemblies. In this work, optical spectroscopy and electronic structure theory are combined to demonstrate that the oxidation state of a sulfur linker between anthracene chromophores gives control over not only the photophysics but also the photochemistry of the molecules. Altering the oxidation state of the sulfur linker does not change the geometry between chromophores, allowing electronic effects between chromophores to be isolated. Previously, we showed that excitonic states in sulfur-bridged terthiophene dimers were modulated by electronic screening of the sulfur lone pairs, but that the sulfur orbitals were not directly involved in these states. In the bridged anthracene dimers that are the subject of the current paper, the atomic orbitals of the unoxidized S linker can actively mix with the anthracene molecular orbitals to form new electronic states with enhanced charge transfer character, different excitonic coupling, and rapid (sub-nanosecond) intersystem crossing that depends on solvent polarity. However, the fully oxidized SO2 bridge restores purely through-space electronic coupling between anthracene chromophores and inhibits intersystem crossing. Photoexcitation leads to either internal conversion on a sub-20 picosecond timescale, or to the creation of a long-lived emissive state that is the likely precursor of the intramolecular [4 + 4] photodimerization. A composite polymer based on vinylogous urethane vitrimer bonding with both photodimerizable and thermally exchangeable functionalities is described. Polymers containing various ratios of photodimerizable diaminoanthracene monomers and thermally exchangeable diaminoalkyl monomers linked by a common bisacetoacetate group are studied. It is demonstrated that alkyl amines undergo the necessary thermal exchange reactions for vinylogous urethane vitrimers, while aromatic amines do not. UV-induced dimerization of the anthracene units results in changes to the rheological properties and the glass transition temperature due to polymer cross-linking. Rapid and near-complete scratch healing upon heating is demonstrated, with a tunable onset temperature for healing controlled by UV irradiation. The viability of a composite vitrimeric system, wherein vitrimeric monomers are combined with non-vitrimeric, stimuli-responsive monomers to generate random copolymers with new properties, is demonstrated.

Metal-functionalized flexible Lewis pair (flexLP) complexes are described. Platinum(II) terpyridine (Pt-tpy) units added to a flexLP backbone through copper(I)-catalyzed coupling reactions yield monometallic (1) and bimetallic (2) Pt-tpy flexLP complexes. NMR and UV-vis absorption studies demonstrate that the complexes switch between the open unbound Lewis pair and closed Lewis adduct with solvents of varying hydrogen-bond-donating (HBD) strength as well as varying temperature. The charge-transfer (CT) energies of the complexes can be tuned by controlling the equilibrium between open and closed forms, demonstrating the ability to alter the photophysical behavior of the metal complexes by stimuli-responsive flexLP ligands.

Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) and room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) are two photophysical phenomena which utilize triplet excitons. In this work, we demonstrate how variation of the anion in organic salts with carbazole and phenothiazine-5,5-dioxide donors and pyridinium and quinolinium acceptors may be used to switch between TADF and RTP. These compounds adopt similar molecular structures and packing modes with different anions and exhibit different types of photophysical behavior due to the electronic effects of the anions. With bromide anions, the salts exhibit TADF with some RTP. These compounds show fast reverse intersystem crossing and a short delayed lifetime, which is key to application in efficient and robust OLEDs. With BF4− and PF6− anions, RTP with long-lived lifetimes and afterglow are observed by eye. This behavior can be utilized for data encryption and anti-counterfeiting applications. Emission wavelengths and lifetimes are also anion-dependent. These results open up an avenue for developing novel luminescent materials through anion tuning and present a molecular model to understand the interplay of RTP and TADF., Anions in organic salts are used to tune photoluminescence properties, especially TADF and RTP. Bromide facilitates RISC and give short delayed lifetimes while tetrafluoroborate leads to RTP with afterglow.

Evaporative heat dissipation is a key aspect of avian thermoregulation in hot environments. We quantified variation in avian thermoregulatory performance at high air temperatures (Ta) using published data on body temperature (Tb), evaporative water loss (EWL) and resting metabolic rate (RMR) measured under standardized conditions of very low humidity in 56 arid-zone species. Maximum Tb during acute heat exposure varied from 42.5±1.3°C in caprimulgids to 44.5±0.5°C in passerines. Among passerines, both maximum Tb and the difference between maximum and normothermic Tb decreased significantly with body mass (Mb). Scaling exponents for minimum thermoneutral EWL and maximum EWL were 0.825 and 0.801, respectively, even though evaporative scope (ratio of maximum to minimum EWL) varied widely among species. Upper critical limits of thermoneutrality (Tuc) varied by >20°C and maximum RMR during acute heat exposure scaled to Mb0.75 in both the overall data set and among passerines. The slope of RMR at Ta>Tuc increased significantly with Mb but was substantially higher among passerines, which rely on panting, compared with columbids, in which cutaneous evaporation predominates. Our analysis supports recent arguments that interspecific within-taxon variation in heat tolerance is functionally linked to evaporative scope and maximum ratios of evaporative heat loss (EHL) to metabolic heat production (MHP). We provide predictive equations for most variables related to avian heat tolerance. Metabolic costs of heat dissipation pathways, rather than capacity to increase EWL above baseline levels, appear to represent the major constraint on the upper limits of avian heat tolerance.

Sulfur oxidation state is used to tune organic room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) of symmetric sulfur-bridged carbazole dimers. The sulfide-bridged compound exhibits a factor of 3 enhancement of the phosphorescence efficiency, compared to the sulfoxide and sulfone-bridged analogs, despite sulfone bridges being commonly used in RTP materials. In order to investigate the origin of this enhancement, temperature dependent spectroscopy measurements and theoretical calculations are used. The RTP lifetimes are similar due to similar crystal packing modes. Computational studies reveal that the lone pairs on the sulfur atom have a profound impact on enhancing intersystem crossing rate through orbital mixing and screening, which we hypothesize is the dominant factor responsible for increasing the phosphorescence efficiency. The ability to tune the electronic state without altering crystal packing modes allows the isolation of these effects. This work provides a new perspective on the design principles of organic phosphorescent materials, going beyond the rules established for conjugated ketone/sulfone-based organic molecules., Sulfur lone pairs in bridged dimers enhance intersystem crossing and phosphorescence through orbital mixing and electrostatic screening.

Background: Air pollution has been suggested as a risk factor for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), but evidence is sparse and inconsistent. Objectives: We examined the association between long-term exposure to low-level air pollution and COPD incidence. Methods: Within the ‘Effects of Low-Level Air Pollution: A Study in Europe’ (ELAPSE) study, we pooled data from three cohorts, from Denmark and Sweden, with information on COPD hospital discharge diagnoses. Hybrid land use regression models were used to estimate annual mean concentrations of particulate matter with a diameter < 2.5 µm (PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and black carbon (BC) in 2010 at participants’ baseline residential addresses, which were analysed in relation to COPD incidence using Cox proportional hazards models. Results: Of 98,058 participants, 4,928 developed COPD during 16.6 years mean follow-up. The adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals for associations with COPD incidence were 1.17 (1.06, 1.29) per 5 µg/m3 for PM2.5, 1.11 (1.06, 1.16) per 10 µg/m3 for NO2, and 1.11 (1.06, 1.15) per 0.5 10−5m−1 for BC. Associations persisted in subset participants with PM2.5 or NO2 levels below current EU and US limit values and WHO guidelines, with no evidence for a threshold. HRs for NO2 and BC remained unchanged in two-pollutant models with PM2.5, whereas the HR for PM2.5 was attenuated to unity with NO2 or BC. Conclusions: Long-term exposure to low-level air pollution is associated with the development of COPD, even below current EU and US limit values and possibly WHO guidelines. Traffic-related pollutants NO2 and BC may be the most relevant. © 2020
