Abstract

Abstract We present the study of the decay J/ψ → ρπ. The results are based on of 5.2 million J/ψ events collected by the KEDR detector at the VEPP-4M collider. The branching fractions are measured to be B $$ \mathcal{B} $$ (J/ψ → ρπ) = (2.072 ± 0.017 ± 0.062) ∙ 10 −2 and B $$ \mathcal{B} $$ (J/ψ → π + π − π 0) = (1.878 ± 0.013 ± 0.051) ∙ 10 −2, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. Our results are more precise than the previous relative measurements.

Abstract

Abstract Using the 1.32 $$\hbox {pb}^{-1}$$ pb - 1 statistics collected at the $$J/\psi $$ J / ψ peak with the KEDR detector at the VEPP-4M $$e^{+}e^{-\, }$$ e + e - collider, we measured the branching fractions of $$J/\psi $$ J / ψ meson decays to the final states 2( $$\pi ^{+}\pi ^{-})\pi ^{0}$$ π + π - ) π 0 , $$K^{+}K^{-}\pi ^{+}\pi ^{-}\pi ^{0}$$ K + K - π + π - π 0 , 2( $$\pi ^{+}\pi ^{-})$$ π + π - ) and $$K^{+}K^{-}\pi ^{+}\pi ^{-}$$ K + K - π + π - . The results obtained for the decays $$J/\psi \rightarrow $$ J / ψ → 2( $$\pi ^{+}\pi ^{-})\pi ^{0}$$ π + π - ) π 0 , $$J/\psi \rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}\pi ^{+}\pi ^{-}\pi ^{0}$$ J / ψ → K + K - π + π - π 0 contradict the measurements performed by other groups in the last century, but agree well with recent results of BABAR and BESIII collaborations.

Abstract

A system for excitation of coherent oscillations of a bunch of particles was created to study the beam dynamics at the VEPP-4M electron-positron collider; it consisted of a pulse generator, a beam deflection device (kicker), and a control and synchronization system. The system has two independent channels for the excitation of horizontal and vertical oscillations and makes it possible to excite oscillations of a given bunch of particles. For observations of beam oscillations, a system for measuring the position of the beam in the reverse mode is used, as well as a fast multichannel photomultiplier tube (profilometer). The design and results of operation of high-voltage nanosecond shock generators with a current pulse duration of 200–250 ns at the base, a voltage up to 25 kV and a current up to 2 kA are described. Using constructive solutions, the durations of the fronts of the output pulses were reduced, which made it possible to avoid the excitation of neighboring bunches. Testing the generators for their working loads gave the following results: a horizontal impact pulse of 30 ns and a vertical impact of 50 ns, a horizontal impact pulse tip duration of ~20 ns, a maximum pulse amplitude of 25 kV, and a time instability (jitter) of ±1 ns. The results of measurements of the beam parameters obtained using this system are presented.

Abstract

An instrument has been developed and manufactured to measure the uniformity of the layer thickness deposited inside ceramic vacuum chambers of electron-beam injection devices (kickers). Using this instrument, it is possible to measure this parameter at an aperture size starting with 1 cm and at different aperture geometries. The measurement range is 0.1−100 µm. The necessity of such measurements is substantiated, various types of sensors are described, and results for some vacuum chambers of the injection kickers in the MAX-IV synchrotron radiation facility (Sweden) are presented.

Abstract

A new-generation dissector has developed on the basis of a modified PIF-01 image converter tube for the timing diagnostics of charged particle beams in accelerators. Pilot models of the detector have been produced. The time resolution obtained in the dynamic tests at the laser facility is ~2 ps, which is better by more than an order of magnitude than the corresponding parameter of the available LI-602 dissector. The pilot models of the new dissector have been successfully tested in experiments at the Metrology Light Source (MLS) accelerator (Berlin, Germany).

Abstract

This paper describes a new image-tube dissector based on a PIF-01 chronographic image-tube device developed and manufactured at the Prokhorov General Physics Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (PGPI RAS). The results of the static measurements of the instrumental function of the dissector showing that its temporal resolution can be higher than 4 ps are given. These data are confirmed by direct measurements on the bench of the PGPI RAS with the use of a femtosecond titanium-sapphire laser.

Abstract

The National Synchrotron Light Source II is a third generation light source, which was constructed at Brookhaven National Laboratory. This project includes a highly-optimized 3 GeV electron storage ring, linac preinjector, and full-energy synchrotron injector. Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics built and delivered the booster for NSLS-II. The commissioning of the booster was successfully completed. This paper reviews fulfilled work by participants.

Abstract

A dissector is an electron-optical device designed for measurement of periodic light pulses of subnanosecond and picosecond duration. LI-602 dissector developed at Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics (BINP SB RAS) is widely used for routine measurements of a longitudinal profile of electron and positron beams at BINP electron-positron colliders and other similar installations (1,2) . LI-602 dissector is a part of many optical diagnostic systems and provides temporal resolution of about 20 ps. Recently a new generation of picosecond dissectors were created on the basis of the PIF- 01/S1 picosecond streak-image tube designed and manufactured at the A.M.Prokhorov General Physics Institute (GPI) Photoelectronics Department (3,4) . The results of the measurements of instrument function of the new dissector based on PIF-01/S1, which were carried out in the static mode (5) showed that temporal resolution of the dissector can be better than 3-4 ps (FWHM). The results of temporal resolution calibration of the new-generation picosecond dissector carried out at the specialized set-up based on a femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser and recent results of longitudinal beam profile measurements at BINP damping ring are given in this work.

Abstract

The VEPP-4M accelerator facility with a universal KEDR detector is designed to conduct experiments with colliding electron-positron beams. High-energy physics, nuclear physics, and studies using synchrotron radiation are the main directions of research with this facility. In addition, experiments on poorly explored issues in the physics of beams in the electron-positron storage ring and methodological studies to prepare an experiment aimed at testing corollaries of the CPT theorem for an electron and a positron are regularly conducted at the VEPP-4 facility. A number of works performed in recent years are described: studies to increase the accuracy of comparing the electron and positron spin precession frequencies by the resonant depolarization method; measurements of the count rate of Touschek electrons as a function of the beam energy in a wide range; comparison of the methods for measuring the beam energy spread; a study of the electron beam dynamics when a nonlinear betatron resonance is crossed.

Abstract

The third generation light source NSLS-II was constructed at BNL, within the project a Booster ring commissioning was successfully completed [1]. Booster injection and extraction kicker magnets pulsed power supplies are considered in the paper. The injection pulsed supplies are capable of generating 0.7–1.5 kA current of 300 ns flat-top, 170 ns rise time, 170 ns fall time with ripples on the tail less then ±0.5%. The extraction kicker is supplied with 2 kA pulse current of 300 ns duration and flat-top deviation less then ±0.2%. 25-kV pulse forming networks built on ceramic capacitors and 10-kA TPI-type pseudospark switches are used in the generators design. Questions and improvements based on one-year PFNs and pseudosparks routine operation are described. Details of generators schematics and results obtained at the NSLS-II and BINP facilities are presented.

Abstract

In 2000, after a long break, creation of the technological storage ring complex (TSC) was renewed in ZELENOGRAD. The injection complex has now been commissioned. The equipment of the main storage ring that has been made earlier is now under inspection. The status of, and short-range plans concerning the Zelenograd storage ring are described in the report.

Abstract

Recently a new generation of picosecond dissectors were created on the basis of the PIF-01/S1 picosecond streak-image tube designed and manufactured at the GPI Photoelectronics Department. The results of the measurements of instrument characteristics of the new dissector, which were carried out in the static mode, showed that temporal resolution of the dissector can be better than 3-4 ps (FWHM). The results of temporal resolution calibration of the new-generation picosecond dissector carried out at the specialized set-up based on a femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser are given in this work.

Abstract

Summary form only given. For the FEL (Free Electron Laser) complex in Duke University five pulse generators (kickers) were developed and built. As fast switches TPI-type thyratrons (pseudospark switches) are used. In contrast with other pseudospark switches TPI-thyratrons are capable of operating in circuitry with a grounded cathode which allows obtaining service life time up to 20 000 hours. The thyratrons can be considered as an alternative to well-known switches, including hot cathode hydrogen thyratrons and up-to-date power solid state switches, whereas being more compact and cost effective compared to the latter. The absence of a hot cathode provides for turn-on time for the thyratrons of about 3-5 ns in modes with thousands-amperes peak currents and sub-nanosecond jitter. Injection generator is built using compact TPI1-1k/20 thyratron, making in a load with impedance of 50 ohm square bi-polar pulses with duration of 100 ns, pulse leading edge of 5-10 ns and "forepart flattop" instability not greater than plusmn5% at the peak overall voltage on deflecting plates from 5 to 10 kV. Extraction generator is built also on TPI1-1k/20 thyratron. It provides in a load with impedance of 50 ohm pulses with duration at level 0.1 not more than 15 ns at the peak overall voltage on plates from 8 to 40 kV. Generator of injection into a big ring is built on power TPI1-10k/20 thyratrons. With plate impedance of 25 ohm it provides for pulse duration at level 0.1 not more than 100 ns at the peak overall voltage on plates from 10 to 50 kV. Results of pulse generators service within over 1.5 years are presented.

Abstract

A booster synchrotron (Duke booster) has been built and recently commissioned at Duke University Free Electron Laser Laboratory (DFELL) as part of the High Intensity Gamma-ray Source (HIGS) facility upgrade. HIGS is collaboration between the DFELL and Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL). The booster provides top-off injection into the Duke FEL storage ring in the energy range of 0.24 -1.2 GeV. When operating the Duke storage ring to produce high energy Compton gamma ray beams above 20 MeV, continuous electron beam loss occurs. The lost electrons are replenished by the booster injector operating in the top-off mode. The present operational injection and extraction rate of the machine allows us to routinely replenish up to 5-108 electrons per second. The compactness of the booster posed a challenge for its development and commissioning. The booster has been successfully commissioned in 2006. This paper reports experience of commissioning and initial operation of the booster.

Abstract

This paper presents the current status of the booster synchrotron for the Duke Free Electron Laser Laboratory (DFELL) storage ring. The booster will provide full energy injection into the storage ring in a wide energy range from 0.27 to 1.2 GeV. When operating the DFELL storage ring as the High Intensity Gamma Source (HIGS) to produce gamma photons above 20 MeV with Compton scattering, continuous electron loss occurs. The top-off mode operation of the booster injector will enable the continuous operation of the HIGS facility by replenishing the lost electrons. The design requirement for a compact booster with the single bunch extraction capability remains a challenge for the machine development. Presently, the booster project is in the installation phase. The magnetic elements, vacuum chambers, injection and extraction kickers have been developed in collaboration with and fabricated at the Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics (BINP), Russia. The diagnostic and control system is being developed at DFELL. The commissioning of the booster synchrotron will start at the end of 2005.
