INTRODUCTION: The global burden of Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) problems has remained a significant challenge to the wellbeing of men and limits the effectiveness of SRH interventions for females. This study explored men and healthcare providers’ perception of ideal male-oriented Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) services. METHODS: This was an exploratory qualitative study involving three focus group discussions among men in selected communities and eight interviews among healthcare service providers in Ekiti State, Nigeria. Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and Key Informant Interview (KII) guides were used to collect qualitative data from twenty-six men and eight healthcare service providers, respectively. Participants for the study were selected from three different units of the selected hospital and twelve communities. Data were sorted, transcribed, and analyzed using Atlas ti software. Inductive-deductive thematic analysis was performed. RESULTS: Three main themes emerged from the study: (a) ideal men-oriented SRH service provision within a unit specially made and named after men, (b) 24-hour daily SRH clinic and (c) locating SRH Clinic in the healthcare institutions with outlets in the communities and schools. The participants identified primary needs as SRH organs assessments; screening services; family planning services; and education and counselling on prevention and treatment of male SRH problems. CONCLUSION: Men have SRH service preferences that focused on preventive and therapeutic sexual and reproductive health needs that are desired to be male-oriented, dedicated and provided in health facilities with public outlets.

ACKGROUND: Nigeria has the second-highest burden of stunted children globally. Yet, only two out of ten malnourished Nigerian children benefit from intervention programs to address malnutrition. This study describes some socio-demographic factors associated with malnutrition among children living in a rural community in Southwest Nigeria. METHODS: This study was a community-based cross-sectional study involving 364 children randomly selected from their homes aged 1–15 years. Factors such as socioeconomic status, birth order, and whether the mother was alive were obtained. Weights, heights, and body mass index (BMI) were measured and interpreted using the WHO z-scores. Chi-squared test of associations was used for categorical variables and an independent t-test was used to compare the mean BMI between both genders. The level of significance was set at a p-value

Background: Diarrhoea diseases remain a major contributor to infant and under-five morbidity and mortality, particularly in developing countries. Administration of the rotavirus vaccine is one of the effective measures to prevent acute and severe forms of diarrhoea in children. Rotavirus vaccine is yet to be fully incorporated into the National Programme on the Immunization schedule. This study assessed the awareness and willingness of mothers to the uptake of rotavirus vaccine for their under-five children at Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH), Ado-Ekiti. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted among 301 mothers of under-five children attending the Children Outpatient Clinic of EKSUTH.An interviewer-administered questionnaire was used to collect the data. Data analysis was performed with SPSS version 23. Results: Forty-two (14%) of the mothers had heard of rotavirus vaccine. Most mothers, 277(92%), will allow their wards to take the rotavirus vaccine. Two hundred and eighty mothers (93%) will advocate for the incorporation of rotavirus vaccine into the National Programme on Immunization Schedule. Eighty-five (28.2%) of the respondents, however, had one concern or the other about rotavirus vaccine. Conclusion: There is a low level of awareness and knowledge about rotavirus vaccines among mothers of under-five children in Ekiti State, Nigeria. Despite this, the willingness to uptake the vaccine was high among respondents. Our findings suggest the need to fully incorporate rotavirus vaccine into the national programmeon immunization to make it widely available to mothers and caregivers of under-five children

Background: Paediatric otorhinolaryngology emergency is a common disorder worldwide which is poorly reported in most developing countries like Nigeria. Methods: This study was aprospective hospital-based study of paediatric patients with otorhinolaryngology, head and neck emergency in the Ear, Nose and Throat(ENT) department carried out between June 2016 and May 2018. Data were obtained by using a pretested interviewers assisted questionnaire. All data were analysed using SPSS version 18.0. Results: Paediatric otorhinolaryngological emergencies accounted for 7.6% of all patients seen in the unit. There were more males (69.5%). Common aetiologies were foreign body impaction (43.3%), infection/inflammation(32.6%) and tumour(1.3%). Anatomically the emergencies involved the ear in 42.1%, 30.9% nasal and 23.2% throat respectively. The most common clinical features were foreign body impaction in 35.2%, pain in 31.3%, bleeding in 19.7%, difficulty breathing in 17.6% and nasal blockage in 15.9%. Common sources of referral were paediatricians in 32.6%,casualty officers in 28.8%, a family physician in 22.3% and self - reporting in 15.0%. Complications at presentation include: 27.0% injury/bleeding, 18.0% otitis externa, 11.2% rhinosinusitis and 10.3% perforated tympanic membrane. Conclusion: Pediatric otorhinolaryngology emergencies are common in our centre and were associated with complications at presentation due to wrong interventions.
