2. Iterative Gaussianisation for Multivariate Transformation

Abstract

Multivariate conditional simulations can be reduced to a set of independent univariate simulations through multivariate Gaussian transformation of the drill hole data to independent Gaussian factors. These simulations are then back transformed to obtain simulated results that exhibit the multivariate relationships observed in the input drill hole data. Several transformation techniques are cited in geostatistical literature for multivariate transformation. However, only two can effectively simulate high dimensional drill hole data with complex non-linear features: Flow Anamorphosis (FA) and Projection Pursuit Multivariate Transformation (PPMT). This paper presents an alternative iterative multivariate Gaussian transformation (IG) along with a multivariate simulation case study of a large Nickel deposit. Our findings show that IG is computationally faster than FA and PPMT which makes the technique more appealing for most practical and time-sensitive applications.

These measurements were carried out to improve knowledge of the proton electromagnetic form factor ratio R=μpGEp∕GMp at large values of Q2 and to search for effects beyond the Born approximation in polarization transfer observables at Q2=2.5GeV2. The final results of both experiments were reported in a recent archival publication. A full reanalysis of the data from both experiments was carried out in order to reduce the systematic and, for the GEp-2γ experiment, statistical uncertainties. This technical note provides additional details of the final analysis omitted from the main publication, including the final evaluation of the systematic uncertainties.

Abstract

Positron beams, both polarized and unpolarized, are identified as essential ingredients for the experimental programs at the next generation of lepton accelerators. In the context of the hadronic physics program at Jefferson Lab (JLab), positron beams are complementary, even essential, tools for a precise understanding of the electromagnetic structure of nucleons and nuclei, in both the elastic and deep-inelastic regimes. For instance, elastic scattering of polarized and unpolarized electrons and positrons from the nucleon enables a model independent determination of its electromagnetic form factors. Also, the deeply-virtual scattering of polarized and unpolarized electrons and positrons allows unambiguous separation of the different contributions to the cross section of the lepto-production of photons and of lepton-pairs, enabling an accurate determination of the nucleons and nuclei generalized parton distributions, and providing an access to the gravitational form factors. Furthermore, positron beams offer the possibility of alternative tests of the Standard Model of particle physics through the search of a dark photon, the precise measurement of electroweak couplings, and the investigation of charged lepton flavor violation. Abstract

Inclusive electron scattering from nuclear targets has been measured to extract the nuclear dependence of the inelastic cross section in Hall C at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator facility. Results are presented for 2H, 3He, 4He, 9B, 12C, 63Cu and 197Au at an incident electron beam energy of 5.77 GeV for a range of momentum transfer from Q^2 = 2 to 7 (GeV/c)^2. These data improve the precision of the existing measurements of the EMC effect in the nuclear targets at large x, and allow for more detailed examinations of the A dependence of the EMC effect., Comment: 28 pages, 23 figures, archival paper for Jefferson Lab experiment E03-103

Abstract

The ratio of the electric and magnetic form factor of the proton, $\mu_p G_E^p/G_M^p$, has been measured for elastic electron-proton scattering with polarized beam and target up to four-momentum transfer squared, $Q^2=5.66$ (GeV/c)$^2$ using the double spin asymmetry for target spin orientation aligned nearly perpendicular to the beam momentum direction. This measurement of $\mu_p G_E^p/G_M^p$ agrees with the $Q^2$ dependence of previous recoil polarization data and reconfirms the discrepancy at high $Q^2$ between the Rosenbluth and the polarization-transfer method with a different measurement technique and systematic uncertainties uncorrelated to those of the recoil-polarization measurements. The form factor ratio at $Q^2$=2.06 (GeV/c)$^2$ has been measured as $\mu_p G_E^p/G_M^p = 0.720 \pm 0.176_{stat} \pm 0.039_{sys}$, which is in agreement with an earlier measurement with the polarized target technique at similar kinematics. The form factor ratio at $Q^2$=5.66 (GeV/c)$^2$ has been determined as $\mu_p G_E^p/G_M^p=0.244\pm0.353_{stat}\pm0.013_{sys}$, which represents the highest $Q^2$ reach with the double spin asymmetry with polarized target to date.

Abstract

Short Range Correlations (SRCs) have been identified as being responsible for the high momentum tail of the nucleon momentum distribution, n(k). Hard, short-range interactions of nucleon pairs generate the high momentum tail and imprint a universal character on n(k) for all nuclei at large momentum. Triple coincidence experiments have shown a strong dominance of np pairs, but these measurements involve large final state interactions. This paper presents the results from Jefferson Lab experiment E08014 which measured inclusive electron scattering cross-section from Ca isotopes. By comparing the inclusive cross section from 48Ca to 40Ca in a kinematic region dominated by SRCs we provide a new way to study the isospin structure of SRCs., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

Although the proton was discovered about 100 years ago, its spin structure still remains a mystery. Recent studies suggest that the orbital angular momentum of sea quarks could significantly contribute to the proton's spin. The SeaQuest experiment, which recently completed data collection, probed the unpolarized light quark sea distributions of the proton using the Drell-Yan process. Its successor, the SpinQuest (E1039), will access the $\bar{u}$ and $\bar{d}$ Sivers functions using polarized NH$_3$ and ND$_3$ targets. A non-zero Sivers asymmetry, observed in SpinQuest, would be a strong indication of non-zero sea-quark orbital angular momentum. The SpinQuest experiment can also probe the sea quark's transversity distribution, which is relevant for the determination of proton's tensor charge. Recent study suggests that sea-quarks might contribute significantly to deuteron's tensor polarized structure functions. This can be further probed in SpinQuest using tensor polarized ND$_3$ target. The current status and future plan of the experiment are presented.

Abstract

We present extractions of the nucleon nonsinglet moments utilizing new precision data on the deuteron F_{2} structure function at large Bjorken-x determined via the Rosenbluth separation technique at Jefferson Lab Experimental Hall C. These new data are combined with a complementary set of data on the proton previously measured in Hall C at similar kinematics and world datasets on the proton and deuteron at lower x measured at SLAC and CERN. The new Jefferson Lab data provide coverage of the upper third of the x range, crucial for precision determination of the higher moments. In contrast to previous extractions, these moments have been corrected for nuclear effects in the deuteron using a new global fit to the deuteron and proton data. The obtained experimental moments represent an order of magnitude improvement in precision over previous extractions using high x data. Moreover, recent exciting developments in lattice QCD calculations provide a first ever comparison of these new experimental results with calculations of moments carried out at the physical pion mass, as well as a new approach that first calculates the quark distributions directly before determining moments.

Abstract

The Spin Asymmetries of the Nucleon Experiment (SANE) measured two double spin asymmetries using a polarized proton target and polarized electron beam at two beam energies, 4.7 GeV and 5.9 GeV. A large-acceptance open-configuration detector package identified scattered electrons at 40$^{\circ}$ and covered a wide range in Bjorken $x$ ($0.3 < x < 0.8$). Proportional to an average color Lorentz force, the twist-3 matrix element, $\tilde{d}_2^p$, was extracted from the measured asymmetries at $Q^2$ values ranging from 2.0 to 6.0 GeV$^2$. The data display the opposite sign compared to most quark models, including the lattice QCD result, and an apparently unexpected scale dependence. Furthermore when combined with the neutron data in the same $Q^2$ range the results suggest a flavor independent average color Lorentz force.

Abstract

Subsequent to the release of our original paper, we discovered in the context of preparing our technical supplement [1] for journal publication that a typographical error had existed in the text file that the analysis program used to construct the beam polarization "database" for both the original analysis, published in Ref. [2], and our final analysis. The electron-beam polarization P e and the analyzing power A y cancel exactly in the ratio R , which is proportional to the ratio P t / P l of the transferred polarization components. On the other hand, the extraction of the relative e dependence of P l / P Born l relies on knowledge of the beam polarization. As such, data taking was interrupted roughly every two days during the GEp - 2 ? experiment to perform invasive measurements of the beam polarization using the Hall C Moller polarimeter [3]. The run range affected by the typographical error was entirely contained within the data collected at Q 2 = 2.5 GeV 2 with a beam energy of E e = 3.680 GeV during January 2008. The data from this configuration were combined with the data collected at E e = 3.548 GeV due to the nearly complete overlap of these two settings in terms of Q 2 and e acceptance. It is worth remarking that this typographical error went unnoticed for so long because it only affected a small fraction of the data (less than half of the combined data for ? e ? = 0.790 ) and the difference between the actually assigned beam polarization and the polarization that should have been assigned was comparable in magnitude to the point-to-point systematic uncertainty of the measurement itself. As such, its effect did not show up in various diagnostic plots and statistical tests, such as the time stability of the extracted P l / P Born l ratio. The data for both E e = 3.548 and E e = 3.680 GeV were reprocessed using the corrected beam polarizations to determine the effect of the typographical error on the combined physics results at ? e ? = 0.790 . Because the value of P e cancels in the ratio R , changes in the assumed beam polarization can only affect the results for R via statistical fluctuations due to changes in the relative weighting of different run ranges in the unbinned maximum-likelihood estimators for R . These effects are negligible on the scale of both the statistical and the systematic uncertainties of the data. More noticeable changes are expected in the ratio P l / P Born l since the extracted value of P l is inversely proportional to the assumed value of P e . Table I shows the effect of the corrected beam polarization database on the polarization transfer observables for the combined data for the ? e ? = 0.790 setting, the only measurement affected by the typographical error. The analyzing power did not need to be recalibrated since it was determined using the ? e ? = 0.153 data, which were not affected by the typographical error. As expected, the change in the ratio R is negligible. The value of P Born l , which is computed event by event from the global fit described in the Appendix of the original paper and does not depend on P e , is also unchanged. The magnitudes of P t , P l , and P l / P Born l are reduced by a common multiplicative factor, reflecting the fact that the beam polarization had been underestimated for the run range affected by the typographical error. The most important result of the corrected analysis is that the ratio P l / P Born l has decreased by 0.0024 from 1.0167 to 1.0143, a change comparable in magnitude to the statistical uncertainty but small compared to the total and point-to-point systematic uncertainties. The P l / P Born l result for the original publication [2] would be reduced by the same multiplicative factor as the final result. Abstract

We present new data probing short-range correlations (SRCs) in nuclei through the measurement of electron scattering off high-momentum nucleons in nuclei. The inclusive 4He/3He cross section ratio is observed to be both x and Q2 independent for 1.5 < x < 2, confirming the dominance of two- nucleon (2N) short-range correlations (SRCs). For x > 2, our data do not support a previous claim of three-nucleon (3N) correlation dominance. While contributions beyond those from stationary 2N- SRCs are observed, our data show that isolating 3N-SRCs is more complicated than for 2N-SRCs., 6 pages, 2 figures, new experimental results from JLab E08-014

Abstract

The Spin Asymmetries of the Nucleon Experiment (SANE) performed inclusive, double-polarized electron scattering measurements of the proton at the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility at Jefferson Lab. A novel detector array observed scattered electrons of four-momentum transfer 2 . 5 Q 2 6 . 5 GeV 2 and Bjorken scaling 0 . 3 x 0 . 8 from initial beam energies of 4.7 and 5.9 GeV. Employing a polarized proton target whose magnetic field direction could be rotated with respect to the incident electron beam, both parallel and near perpendicular spin asymmetries were measured, allowing model-independent access to transverse polarization observables A 1 , A 2 , g 1 , g 2 and moment d 2 of the proton. This document summarizes the operation and performance of the polarized target, polarized electron beam, and novel detector systems used during the course of the experiment, and describes analysis techniques utilized to access the physics observables of interest.

Purpose: The GEp-III and GEp-2γ experiments were carried out in Jefferson Laboratory's (JLab's) Hall C from 2007 to 2008, to extend the knowledge of GEp/GMp to the highest practically achievable Q2 given the maximum beam energy of 6 GeV and to search for effects beyond the Born approximation in polarization transfer observables of elastic ∫ - p scattering. This article provides an expanded description of the common experimental apparatus and data analysis procedures, and reports the results of a final reanalysis of the data from both experiments, including the previously unpublished results of the full-acceptance dataset of the GEp-2γ experiment. Methods: Polarization transfer observables in elastic ∫ - p→∫ - scattering were measured at central Q2 values of 2.5, 5.2, 6.8, and 8.54 GeV2. At Q2=2.5GeV2, data were obtained for central values of the virtual photon polarization parameter ϵ of 0.149, 0.632, and 0.783. The Hall C High Momentum Spectrometer detected and measured the polarization of protons recoiling elastically from collisions of JLab's polarized electron beam with a liquid hydrogen target. A large-acceptance electromagnetic calorimeter detected the elastically scattered electrons in coincidence to suppress inelastic backgrounds. Results: The final GEp-III data are largely unchanged relative to the originally published results. The statistical uncertainties of the final GEp-2γ data are significantly reduced at ϵ=0.632 and 0.783 relative to the original publication. Conclusions: The final GEp-III results show that the decrease with Q2 of GEp/GMp continues to Q2=8.5GeV2, but at a slowing rate relative to the approximately linear decrease observed in earlier Hall A measurements. At Q2=8.5GeV2, GEp/GMp remains positive but is consistent with zero. At Q2=2.5GeV2, GEp/GMp derived from the polarization component ratio R-Pt/P shows no statistically significant ϵ dependence, as expected in the Born approximation. On the other hand, the ratio P""/P""Born of the longitudinal polarization transfer component to its Born value shows an enhancement of roughly 1.7% at ϵ=0.783 relative to ϵ=0.149, with ≈2.2σ significance based on the total uncertainty, implying a similar effect in the transverse component Pt that cancels in the ratio R.

Abstract

The charge and magnetic form factors, FC and FM, of 3He have been extracted in the kinematic range 25 fm-2 < Q2 < 61 fm-2 from elastic electron scattering by detecting 3He recoil nuclei and electrons in coincidence with the High Resolution Spectrometers of the Hall A Facility at Jefferson Lab. The measurements are indicative of a second diffraction minimum for the magnetic form factor, which was predicted in the Q2 range of this experiment, and of a continuing diffractive structure for the charge form factor. The data are in qualitative agreement with theoretical calculations based on realistic interactions and accurate methods to solve the three-body nuclear problem.

Abstract

We studied simultaneously the 4He(e,e'p), 4He(e,e'pp), and 4He(e,e'pn) reactions at Q2=2 [GeV/c]2 and xB >1, for a (e,e'p) missing-momentum range of 400 to 830 MeV/c. The knocked-out proton was detected in coincidence with a proton or neutron recoiling almost back to back to the missing momentum, leaving the residual A=2 system at low excitation energy. These data were used to identify two-nucleon short-range correlated pairs and to deduce their isospin structure as a function of missing momentum in a region where the nucleon-nucleon force is expected to change from predominantly tensor to repulsive. Neutron-proton pairs dominate the high-momentum tail of the nucleon momentum distributions, but their abundance is reduced as the nucleon momentum increases beyond ~500 MeV/c. The extracted fraction of proton-proton pairs is small and almost independent of the missing momentum in the range we studied. Our data are compared with ab-initio calculations of two-nucleon momentum distributions in 4He.

Abstract

The electromagnetic (EM) form factors of the heliumisotopes are, along with the deuteron and tritium formfactors, the \observables of choice" [1] for testing thenucleon-meson standard model of the nuclear interac-tion and the associated EM current operator [2]. Theyprovide fundamental information on the internal struc-ture and dynamics of the light nuclei as they are, in asimple picture, convolutions of the ground state wavefunction with the EM form factors of the constituentnucleons. The theoretical calculations for these few-body observables are very sensitive to the model used forthe nuclear EM current operator, especially its meson-exchange-current (MEC) contributions. Relativistic cor-rections and possible admixtures of multi-quark states inthe nuclear wave function might also be relevant [2]. Ad-ditionally, at large momentum transfers, these EM formfactors may o er a unique opportunity to uncover a pos-sible transition in the description of elastic electron scat-tering on few-body nuclear systems, from meson-nucleonto quark-gluon degrees of freedom, as predicted by quark-dimensional scaling [3, 4].Experimentally, the few-body form factors are deter-mined from elastic electron-nucleus scattering studies us-ing high intensity beams, high density targets and large

Abstract

New measurements are reported on the deuteron spin structure function g_1^d. These results were obtained from deep inelastic scattering of 48.3 GeV electrons on polarized deuterons in the kinematic range 0.01 < x < 0.9 and 1 < Q^2 < 40 (GeV/c)^2. These are the first high dose electron scattering data obtained using lithium deuteride (6Li2H) as the target material. Extrapolations of the data were performed to obtain moments of g_1^d, including Gamma_1^d, and the net quark polarization Delta Sigma., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

We have built a polarized proton and deuteron target for experiments using intense high-energy electron beams. This system exploits dynamical nuclear polarization of irradiated ammonia in a 5 T magnetic field at temperatures near 1 K. We describe the various features and the performance of the target.

Abstract

Experiment E155 at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) measured the spin-dependent structure of the proton and neutron, using for the first time 6 LiD as the polarized deuteron target material in a high-energy electron beam. This compound provides a significantly higher dilution factor than any other solid deuteron target material currently used in high-energy physics experiments. Results of the polarization behavior of the 6 LiD target material before and after exposure to the 50 GeV/ c electron beam used in E155 are presented.

Abstract

The behavior of dynamically polarized targets in the presence of a high intensity electron beam was studied. The nuclear polarization seen by the incident electron beam is lower than the overall measured target polarization by NMR due to beam heating and subsequent depolarization. A correction for this beam-induced depolarization is developed here to correct the measured target polarization for these effects. Furthermore, a model has also been developed to calculate the target depolarization in beam, and optimization of running conditions for future experiments of this nature are discussed based on this model.

Abstract

We have measured the proton and deuteron spin structure functions g[sup p][sub 1] and g[sup d][sub 1] in the region of the nucleon resonances for W2 < 5GeV2 and Q2(similar, equals)0.5 and Q2(similar, equals)1.2GeV2 by inelastically scattering 9.7 GeV polarized electrons off polarized 15NH3 and 15ND3 targets. We observe significant structure in g[sup p][sub 1] in the resonance region. We have used the present results, together with the deep-inelastic data at higher W2, to extract Gamma (Q2)(equivalent)01 g1(x,Q2)dx. This is the first information on the low-Q2 evolution of Gamma toward the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn limit at Q2 = 0.

Abstract

We have measured proton and deuteron virtual photon-nucleon asymmetries A{sup p}{sub 2} and A{sup d}{sub 2} and structure functions g{sup p}{sub 2} and g{sup d}{sub 2} over the range 0.03 < x < 0.8 and 1.3 < Q{sup 2} < 10 (GeV/c){sup 2} by inelastically scattering polarized electrons off polarized ammonia targets. Results for A{sub 2} are significantly smaller than the positivity limit (sqrt)R for both targets. Within experimental precision the g{sub 2} data are well described by the twist-2 contribution, g{sup ww}{sub 2}. Twist-3 matrix elements have been extracted and are compared to theoretical predictions.

Abstract

We have measured the ratio [ital g][sup [ital p]][sub 1]/[ital F][sup [ital p]][sub 1] over the range 0.029[lt][ital x][lt]0.8 and 1.3[lt][ital Q][sup 2][lt]10 (GeV/[ital c])[sup 2] using deep-inelastic scattering of polarized electrons from polarized ammonia. An evaluation of the integral [integral][ital g][sup [ital p]][sub 1]([ital x],[ital Q][sup 2])[ital dx] at fixed [ital Q][sup 2]=3 (GeV/[ital c])[sup 2] yields 0.127[plus minus]0.004(stat)[plus minus]0.010(syst), in agreement with previous experiments, but well below the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule prediction of 0.160[plus minus]0.006. In the quark-parton model, this implies [Delta][ital q]=0.27[plus minus]0.10.

Abstract

We present new data for the polarization observables of the final state proton in the $^{1}H(\vec{\gamma},\vec{p})\pi^{0}$ reaction. These data can be used to test predictions based on hadron helicity conservation (HHC) and perturbative QCD (pQCD). These data have both small statistical and systematic uncertainties, and were obtained with beam energies between 1.8 and 5.6 GeV and for $\pi^{0}$ scattering angles larger than 75$^{\circ}$ in center-of-mass (c.m.) frame. The data extend the polarization measurements data base for neutral pion photoproduction up to $E_{\gamma}=5.6 GeV$. The results show non-zero induced polarization above the resonance region. The polarization transfer components vary rapidly with the photon energy and $\pi^{0}$ scattering angle in c.m. frame. This indicates that HHC does not hold and that the pQCD limit is still not reached in the energy regime of this experiment., Comment: 6 pages and 2 figures

These data allow an improved determination of the strength of two-nucleon correlations for several nuclei, including light nuclei where clustering effects can, for the first time, be examined. Abstract

Intensive theoretical and experimental efforts over the past decade have aimed at explaining the discrepancy between data for the proton electric to magnetic form factor ratio, $$G_{E}/G_{M}$$, obtained separately from cross section and polarization transfer measurements. One possible explanation for this difference is a two-photon-exchange (TPEX) contribution. In an effort to search for effects beyond the one-photon-exchange or Born approximation, we report measurements of polarization transfer observables in the elastic $$H(\vec{e},e'\vec{p})$$ reaction for three different beam energies at a fixed squared momentum transfer $Q^2 = 2.5$ GeV$^2$, spanning a wide range of the virtual photon polarization parameter, $$\epsilon$$. From these measured polarization observables, we have obtained separately the ratio $R$, which equals $$\mu_p G_{E}/G_{M}$$ in the Born approximation, and the longitudinal polarization transfer component $$P_\ell$$, with statistical and systematic uncertainties of $$\Delta R \approx \pm 0.01 \mbox{(stat)} \pm 0.013 \mbox{(syst)}$$ and $$\Delta P_\ell/P^{Born}_{\ell} \approx \pm 0.006 \mbox{(stat)}\pm 0.01 \mbox{(syst)}$$. The ratio $R$ is found to be independent of $$\epsilon$$ at the 1.5% level, while the $$\epsilon$$ dependence of $$P_\ell$$ shows an enhancement of $$(2.3 \pm 0.6) %$$ relative to the Born approximation at large $$\epsilon$$.

Abstract

The tantalizing problem of the “quenching” of the Coulomb sum rule observed in medium weight nuclei is investigated in light nuclei at high momentum transfer. Inclusive electron scattering cross sections for 3,4He have been measured in the quasielastic region at electron energies between 0.9 GeV and 4.3 GeV, and scattering angles of 15° and 85°. Longitudinal (RL) and transverse (RT) response functions have been extracted using a Rosenbluth separation at constant ‖ q ‖ of 1.050 (GeV/c). The ratio of the longitudinal to the transverse reduced response functions in the negative y region reaches unity. The experimental Coulomb sum rule although with large uncertainty and conversly to the case of medium weight nuclei, saturates at high momentum to the He nucleus total charge namely Z=2.

Abstract

The electric form factor of the neutron was determined from studies of the reaction ${}^{3}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{He}}(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{e},{e}^{\ensuremath{'}}n)pp$ in quasielastic kinematics in Hall A at Jefferson Lab. Longitudinally polarized electrons were scattered off a polarized target in which the nuclear polarization was oriented perpendicular to the momentum transfer. The scattered electrons were detected in a magnetic spectrometer in coincidence with neutrons that were registered in a large-solid-angle detector. More than doubling the ${Q}^{2}$ range over which it is known, we find ${G}_{E}^{n}=0.0236\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.0017(\mathrm{stat})\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.0026(\mathrm{syst})$, $0.0208\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.0024\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.0019$, and $0.0147\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.0020\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.0014$ for ${Q}^{2}=1.72$, 2.48, and $3.41\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{GeV}}^{2}$, respectively.

Abstract

Abstract

We present new data on electron scattering from a range of nuclei taken in Hall C at Jefferson Lab. For heavy nuclei, we observe a rapid falloff in the cross section for x > 1, which is sensitive to short-range contributions to the nuclear wave function, and in deep inelastic scattering corresponds to probing extremely high momentum quarks. This result agrees with higher energy muon scattering measurements, but is in sharp contrast to neutrino scattering measurements which suggested a dramatic enhancement in the distribution of the “superfast” quarks probed at x > 1. The falloff at x > 1 is noticeably stronger in ^2H and ^3He, but nearly identical for all heavier nuclei.

Abstract

We have extracted QCD matrix elements from our data on double polarized inelastic scattering of electrons on nuclei. We find the higher twist matrix element \tilde{d_2}, which arises strictly from quark- gluon interactions, to be unambiguously non zero. The data also reveal an isospin dependence of higher twist effects if we assume that the Burkhardt-Cottingham Sum rule is valid. The fundamental Bjorken sum rule obtained from the a0 matrix element is satisfied at our low momentum transfer., formerly "Nachtmann Moments of the Proton and Deuteron Spin Structure Functions"

Abstract

Among the most fundamental observables of nucleon structure, electromagnetic form factors are a crucial benchmark for modern calculations describing the strong interaction dynamics of the nucleon’s quark constituents; indeed, recent proton data have attracted intense theoretical interest. In this Letter, we report new measurements of the proton electromagnetic form factor ratio using the recoil polarization method, at momentum transfers Q2=5.2, 6.7, and 8.5 GeV2. By extending the range of Q2 for which GEp is accurately determined by more than 50%, these measurements will provide significant constraints on models of nucleon structure in the nonperturbative regime.

Among the most fundamental observables of nucleon structure, electromagnetic form factors are a crucial benchmark for modern calculations describing the strong interaction dynamics of the nucleon's quark constituents; indeed, recent proton data have attracted intense theoretical interest. In this Letter, we report new measurements of the proton electromagnetic form factor ratio using the recoil polarization method, at momentum transfers Q2=5.2, 6.7, and 8.5 GeV2. By extending the range of Q2 for which G(E)(p) is accurately determined by more than 50%, these measurements will provide significant constraints on models of nucleon structure in the nonperturbative regime.

Abstract

Inclusive electron scattering cross sections for {sup 3,4}He have been measured in the quasielastic region at electron energies between 0.9 and 4.3 GeV, and scattering angles of 15{degree} and 85{degree}. Longitudinal ({ital R}{sub {ital L}}) and transverse ({ital R}{sub {ital T}}) response functions have been extracted using a Rosenbluth separation at constant {vert bar}{bold q}{vert bar} of 1.050 GeV/{ital c}. The ratio of the longitudinal to the transverse reduced response functions in the negative {ital y} region reaches unity.

Abstract

New Jefferson Lab data are presented on the nuclear dependence of the inclusive cross section from {sup 2}H, {sup 3}He, {sup 4}He, {sup 9}Be and {sup 12}C for 0.3 < x < 0.9, Q{sup 2} {approx} 3-6 GeV{sup 2}. These data represent the first measurement of the EMC effect for {sup 3}He at large x and a significant improvement for {sup 4}He. The data do not support previous A-dependent or density-dependent fits to the EMC effect and suggest that the nuclear dependence of the quark distributions may depend on the local nuclear environment.

Abstract

Inclusive electron-scattering cross sections have been measured for ^(56)Fe in the quasielastic region at electron energies between 0.9 and 4.3 GeV, at scattering angles of 15° and 85°. Longitudinal and transverse response functions at a q of 1.14 GeV/c have been extracted using a Rosenbluth separation. The experimental Coulomb sum has been obtained with aid of an extrapolation. The longitudinal response function, after correction for Coulomb distortion, is lower than quasifree-scattering-model predictions at the quasielastic peak and on the high-ω side.

Abstract

The ratio of the proton's electric to magnetic form factor, G{sub E}/G{sub M}, can be extracted in elastic electron-proton scattering by measuring cross sections, beam-target asymmetry, or recoil polarization. Separate determinations of G{sub E}/G{sub M} by cross sections and recoil polarization observables disagree for Q{sup 2}>1 (GeV/c){sup 2}. Measurement by a third technique might uncover an unknown systematic error in either of the previous measurements. The beam-target asymmetry has been measured for elastic electron-proton scattering at Q{sup 2} = 1.51 (GeV/c){sup 2} for target spin orientation aligned perpendicular to the beam momentum direction. This is the largest Q{sup 2} at which G{sub E}/G{sub M} has been determined by a beam-target asymmetry experiment. The result, {mu}G{sub E}/G{sub M}=0.884{+-}0.027{+-}0.029, is compared to previous world data.

Abstract

We studied the reaction {sup 12}C(e,e{sup '}p) in quasielastic kinematics at momentum transfers between 0.6 and 1.8 (GeV/c){sup 2} covering the single-particle region. From this the nuclear transparency factors are extracted using two methods. The results are compared to theoretical predictions obtained using a generalization of Glauber theory described in this paper. Furthermore, the momentum distribution in the region of the 1s-state up to momenta of 300 MeV/c is obtained from the data and compared to the correlated basis function theory and the independent-particle shell model.

Abstract

The 10-probe NMR system for measuring the polarization in the deuterated butanol target of the Spin Muon Collaboration is presented. It is calibrated by determining the integrated spectrum in thermal equilibrium at 1 K. Thermal stabilization and control of electromagnetic interference were effective in reducing drift and electronic noise, so that high quality thermal equilibrium signals were obtained. The calibration constant was determined with a reproducibility of 2%. Systematic effects of circuit drift and of the magnetic field shift have been studied. The resulting 4.4% uncertainty of the calibration dominates the 5% overall error on the target polarization value which was typically 0.45.

Abstract

We have carried out an (e,e'p) experiment at high momentum transfer and in parallel kinematics to measure the strength of the nuclear spectral function S(k,E) at high nucleon momenta k and large removal energies E. This strength is related to the presence of short-range and tensor correlations, and was known hitherto only indirectly and with considerable uncertainty from the lack of strength in the independent-particle region. Abstract

The instrumentation in Hall A at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility was designed to study electro-and photo-induced reactions at very high luminosity and good momentum and angular resolution for at least one of the reaction products. The central components of Hall A are two identical high resolution spectrometers, which allow the vertical drift chambers in the focal plane to provide a momentum resolution of better than 2 x 10(-4). A variety of Cherenkov counters, scintillators and lead-glass calorimeters provide excellent particle identification. The facility has been operated successfully at a luminosity well in excess of 10(38) CM-2 s(-1). The research program is aimed at a variety of subjects, including nucleon structure functions, nucleon form factors and properties of the nuclear medium. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

The electric form factor of the neutron was determined from measurements of the d--(e--,e'n)p reaction for quasielastic kinematics. Polarized electrons were scattered off a polarized deuterated ammonia (15ND3) target in which the deuteron polarization was perpendicular to the momentum transfer. The scattered electrons were detected in a magnetic spectrometer in coincidence with neutrons in a large solid angle detector. We find G(n)(E)=0.0526+/-0.0033(stat)+/-0.0026(sys) and 0.0454+/-0.0054+/-0.0037 at Q(2)=0.5 and 1.0 (GeV/c)(2), respectively.
