Wind farm parameterizations (WFPs) are used in mesoscale models for predicting wind farm power production and its impact on wind resources while considering the variability of the regional wind climate. However, the performance of WFPs is influenced by various factors including atmospheric stability. In this study, we compared two widely used WFPs in the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model to large-eddy simulations (LES) of turbine wakes performed with the same model. The Fitch WFP and the explicit wake parameterization were evaluated for their ability to represent wind speed and turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) in a two-turbine wind farm layout under neutral, unstable, and stable atmospheric stability conditions. To ensure a fair comparison, the inflow conditions were kept as close as possible between the LES and mesoscale simulations for each type of stability condition, and the LES results were spatially aggregated to align with the mesoscale grid spacing. Our findings indicate that the performance of WFPs varies depending on the specific variable (wind speed or TKE) and the area of interest downwind of the turbine when compared to the LES reference. The WFPs can accurately depict the vertical profiles of the wind speed deficit for either the grid cell containing the wind turbines or the grid cells in the far wake, but not both simultaneously. The WFPs with an explicit source of TKE overestimate TKE values at the first grid cell containing the wind turbine; however, for downwind grid cells, agreement improves. On the other hand, WFPs without a TKE source underestimate TKE in all downwind grid cells. These agreement patterns between the WFPs and the LES reference are consistent under the three atmospheric stability conditions. However, the WFPs resemble less the wind speed and TKE from the LES reference under stable conditions than that under neutral or unstable conditions.

During the months of February–March (FM) of the 2020–2022 period, several intense dust intrusions from northern Africa affected Europe. The frequency of dust events was exceptional, considering that wintertime is the season with minimum dust activity in the Mediterranean, and some episodes displayed a duration and/or intensity never recorded before, affecting large areas of the western Euro-Mediterranean (WEM) region. The main objective of this work is to construct a catalogue of FM dust events over the WEM for the 2003–2022 period based on satellite aerosol retrievals and to analyse their atmospheric drivers at the synoptic and large scales, paying special attention to the recent 2020–2022 period of high dust activity. Overall, our results indicate large intraseasonal and interannual variability in the occurrence of wintertime dust events over the WEM. Dust events of FM 2020–2022 were characterized by enhanced dust concentration and high maximum altitudes in comparison with those of previous years (2003–2019). WEM dust events are associated with enhanced activity of high-pressure systems over the Euro-Atlantic sector, which favour the obstruction of the westerlies and the occurrence of cut-off lows at subtropical latitudes. However, these high-pressure systems can exhibit a large variety of configurations, including meridional dipole blocking patterns with poleward shifted jets or Mediterranean subtropical ridges with an intensified mid-latitude jet. The former is the dominant favourable pattern for WEM dust occurrence, but the latter was relatively common during the 2020–2022 period.

The floods that struck the lower Tagus valley in February 1979 correspond to the most intense floods in this river and affected the largest number of people in a river flow event in Portugal during the last 150 years. In fact, the vast area affected significantly impacted circa 10 000 people in the lower Tagus sector (and an additional 7000 in other regions of Portugal), including thousands of people evacuated or made homeless. In this context, the present study focuses on an in-depth analysis of this event from a hydrodynamic perspective by means of the Iber+ numerical model and on developing strategies to mitigate the flood episodes that occur in the lower section of the Tagus River using the exceptional floods of February 1979 as a benchmark. In this sense, dam operating strategies were developed and analyzed for the most important dam along the Tagus River basin in order to propose effective procedures to take advantage of these infrastructures to minimize the effect of floods. Overall, the numerical results indicate a good agreement with watermarks and some descriptions of the 1979 flood event, which demonstrates the model capability to evaluate floods in the area under study. Regarding flood mitigation, results obtained indicate that the frequency of floods can be reduced with the proposed strategies, which were focused on providing optimal dam operating rules to mitigate flooding in the lower Tagus valley. In addition, hydraulic simulations corroborated an important decrease in water depth and velocity for the most extreme flood events, and also a certain reduction in the flood extension was detected. This confirms the effectiveness of the proposed strategies to help in reducing the flood impact in the lower Tagus valley through the efficient functioning of dams.

(Pb[Formula: see text]Ba[Formula: see text])[(Zn[Formula: see text]Nb[Formula: see text])[Formula: see text]Ti[Formula: see text]]O3 relaxor-type ferroelectric ceramics was obtained via classical solid-state reaction. The hysteresis loop results were discussed in the frame of ergodicity criterium around the characteristic ferroelectric relaxor freezing temperature. Slimer hysteresis loops were observed below the freezing temperature reflecting an ergodic relaxor behavior. Above this temperature, estimated around 223[Formula: see text]K for the studied system, larger and unsaturated like ferroelectric hysteresis loops were observed. This temperature also coincides with the slope change on maximum polarization and inflection point of remnant polarization curves. Energy storage, energy loss and efficiency values were determined in a wide temperature range. While the recoverable energy density shows relatively low values (0.23[Formula: see text]J/cm3), there are interesting behaviors for this parameter and for the efficiency, since the two physical quantities increase versus temperature and the efficiency even reaches the value of 97%.

Offshore wind farms are more commonly installed in wind farm clusters, where wind farm interaction can lead to energy losses; hence, there is a need for numerical models that can properly simulate wind farm interaction. This work proposes a Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) method to efficiently simulate the effect of neighboring wind farms on wind farm power and annual energy production. First, a novel steady-state atmospheric inflow is proposed and tested for the application of RANS simulations of large wind farms. Second, a RANS-based wind farm parameterization is introduced, the actuator wind farm (AWF) model, which represents the wind farm as a forest canopy and allows to use of coarser grids compared to modeling all wind turbines as actuator disks (ADs). When the horizontal resolution of the RANS-AWF model is increased, the model results approach the results of the RANS-AD model. A double wind farm case is simulated with RANS to show that replacing an upstream wind farm with an AWF model only causes a deviation of less than 1 % in terms of the wind farm power of the downstream wind farm. Most importantly, a reduction in CPU hours of 75.1 % is achieved, provided that the AWF inputs are known, namely, wind farm thrust and power coefficients. The reduction in CPU hours is further reduced when all wind farms are represented by AWF models, namely, 92.3 % and 99.9 % for the double wind farm case and for a wind farm cluster case consisting of three wind farms, respectively. If the wind farm thrust and power coefficient inputs are derived from RANS-AD simulations, then the CPU time reduction is still 82.7 % for the wind farm cluster case. For the double wind farm case, the RANS models predict different wind speed flow fields compared to output from simulations performed with the mesoscale Weather Research and Forecasting model, but the models are in agreement with the inflow wind speed of the downstream wind farm. The RANS-AD-AWF model is also validated with measurements in terms of wind farm wake shape; the model captures the trend of the measurements for a wide range of wind directions, although the measurements indicate more pronounced wind farm wake shapes for certain wind directions.

Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) air pollution provides valuable information for quantifying NOx (NOx = NO + NO2) emissions and exposures. This study presents a comprehensive method to estimate average tropospheric NO2 emission strengths derived from 4-year (May 2018–June 2022) TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) observations by combining a wind-assigned anomaly approach and a machine learning (ML) method, the so-called gradient descent algorithm. This combined approach is firstly applied to the Saudi Arabian capital city of Riyadh, as a test site, and yields a total emission rate of 1.09×1026 molec. s−1. The ML-trained anomalies fit very well with the wind-assigned anomalies, with an R2 value of 1.0 and a slope of 0.99. Hotspots of NO2 emissions are apparent at several sites: over a cement plant and power plants as well as over areas along highways. Using the same approach, an emission rate of 1.99×1025 molec. s−1 is estimated in the Madrid metropolitan area, Spain. Both the estimate and spatial pattern are comparable with the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) inventory. Weekly variations in NO2 emission are highly related to anthropogenic activities, such as the transport sector. The NO2 emissions were reduced by 16 % at weekends in Riyadh, and high reductions were found near the city center and in areas along the highway. An average weekend reduction estimate of 28 % was found in Madrid. The regions with dominant sources are located in the east of Madrid, where residential areas and the Madrid-Barajas airport are located. Additionally, due to the COVID-19 lockdowns, the NO2 emissions decreased by 21 % in March–June 2020 in Riyadh compared with the same period in 2019. A much higher reduction (62 %) is estimated for Madrid, where a very strict lockdown policy was implemented. The high emission strengths during lockdown only persist in the residential areas, and they cover smaller areas on weekdays compared with weekends. The spatial patterns of NO2 emission strengths during lockdown are similar to those observed at weekends in both cities. Although our analysis is limited to two cities as test examples, the method has proven to provide reliable and consistent results. It is expected to be suitable for other trace gases and other target regions. However, it might become challenging in some areas with complicated emission sources and topography, and specific NO2 decay times in different regions and seasons should be taken into account. These impacting factors should be considered in the future model to further reduce the uncertainty budget.

River floods, which are one of the most dangerous natural hazards worldwide, have increased in intensity and frequency in recent decades as a result of climate change, and the future scenario is expected to be even worse. Therefore, their knowledge, predictability, and mitigation represent a key challenge for the scientific community in the coming decades, especially in those local areas that are most vulnerable to these extreme events. In this sense, a multiscale analysis is essential to obtain detailed maps of the future evolution of floods. In the multiscale analysis, the historical and future precipitation data from the CORDEX (Coordinated Regional Downscaling Experiment) project are used as input in a hydrological model (HEC-HMS) which, in turn, feeds a 2D hydraulic model (Iber+). This integration allows knowing the projected future changes in the flow pattern of the river, as well as analyzing the impact of floods in vulnerable areas through the flood hazard maps obtained with hydraulic simulations. The multiscale analysis is applied to the case of the Miño-Sil basin (NW Spain), specifically to the city of Ourense. The results show a delay in the flood season and an increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme river flows in the Miño-Sil basin, which will cause more situations of flooding in many areas frequented by pedestrians and in important infrastructure of the city of Ourense. In addition, an increase in water depths associated with future floods was also detected, confirming the trend for future floods to be not only more frequent but also more intense. Detailed maps of the future evolution of floods also provide key information to decision-makers to take effective measures in advance in those areas most vulnerable to flooding in the coming decades. Although the methodology presented is applied to a particular area, its strength lies in the fact that its implementation in other basins and cities is simple, also taking into account that all the models used are freely accessible.

We explore the changes in wind energy resources in northern Europe using output from historical to mid-21st century CMIP6 simulations and the high-emission SSP5-8.5 scenario. This study improves upon many assumptions made in the past. First, we interpolate the winds to hub height using model-level raw data; second, we use a large ensemble of CMIP6 models; third, we consider the possible wake effects on the annual energy production of a large wind farm cluster proposed for the North Sea. The common practice of extrapolating 10 m wind speeds to turbine height using the power law with a constant shear exponent is often a poor approximation of the actual turbine-height wind speed. This approximation can exaggerate the future changes in wind resources and ignore possible surface roughness and atmospheric stability changes. The evaluation of the wind climatologies in the CMIP6 models over the North Sea for the historical period shows good correspondence with measurements from tall masts and three reanalysis data points for 16 of the 18 models. Some of the models run at relatively high spatial resolution are as good as the reanalyses at representing the wind climate in this region. Our results show that annual mean wind speed and wind resources in northern Europe are not particularly affected by climate change in 2031–2050 relative to 1995–2014, according to a subset of 16 models in the CMIP6 collection. However, the seasonal distribution of these resources is significantly altered. Most models agree on reductions in the future wind in summer in a band that extends from the British Isles to the Baltic Sea and on increases in winter in the southern Baltic Sea. The energy production calculations show that summer energy production in a planned large wind farm cluster in the North Sea could be reduced by a median of 6.9 % during 2031–2050 when taking into account the wind farm wakes (that accounts for −0.7 %) and the changes in air density (that account for −0.9 %).

Reservoirs play a key role in many human societies due to their capability to manage water resources. In addition to their role in water supply and hydropower production, their ability to retain water and control the flow makes them a valuable asset for flood mitigation. This is a key function, since extreme events have increased in the last few decades as a result of climate change, and therefore, the application of mechanisms capable of mitigating flood damage will be key in the coming decades. Having a good estimation of the outflow of a reservoir can be an advantage for water management or early warning systems. When historical data are available, data-driven models have been proven a useful tool for different hydrological applications. In this sense, this study analyzes the efficiency of different machine learning techniques to predict reservoir outflow, namely multivariate linear regression (MLR) and three artificial neural networks: multilayer perceptron (MLP), nonlinear autoregressive exogenous (NARX) and long short-term memory (LSTM). These techniques were applied to forecast the outflow of eight water reservoirs of different characteristics located in the Miño River (northwest of Spain). In general, the results obtained showed that the proposed models provided a good estimation of the outflow of the reservoirs, improving the results obtained with classical approaches such as to consider reservoir outflow equal to that of the previous day. Among the different machine learning techniques analyzed, the NARX approach was the option that provided the best estimations on average.

Volcanic plume composition is strongly influenced by both changes in magmatic systems and plume-atmosphere interactions. Understanding the degassing mechanisms controlling the type of volcanic activity implies deciphering the contributions of magmatic gases reaching the surface and their posterior chemical transformations in contact with the atmosphere. Remote sensing techniques based on direct solar absorption spectroscopy provide valuable information about most of the emitted magmatic gases but also on gas species formed and converted within the plumes. In this study, we explore the procedures, performances and benefits of combining two direct solar absorption techniques, high resolution Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Ultraviolet Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (UV-DOAS), to observe the composition changes in the Popocatépetl’s plume with high temporal resolution. Introduction: Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a neurodegenerative disease caused by a biallelic mutation of the SMN1 gene, located on the long arm of chromosome 5, and predominantly affects the motor neurons of the anterior horn of the spinal cord, causing progressive muscle weakness and atrophy. The development of disease-modifying treatments is significantly changing the natural history of SMA, but uncertainty remains about which patients can benefit from these treatments and how that benefit should be measured. Methodology: A group of experts specialised in neurology, neuropediatrics, and rehabilitation and representatives of the Spanish association of patients with SMA followed the Delphi method to reach a consensus on 5 issues related to the use of these new treatments: general aspects, treatment objectives, outcome assessment tools, requirements of the treating centres, and regulation of their use. Consensus was considered to be achieved when a response received at least 80% of votes. Results: Treatment protocols are useful for regulating the use of high-impact medications and should guide treatment, but should be updated regularly to take into account the most recent evidence available, and their implementation should be assessed on an individual basis. Age, baseline functional status, and, in the case of children, the type of SMA and the number of copies of SMN2 are characteristics that should be considered when establishing therapeutic objectives, assessment tools, and the use of such treatments. The cost-effectiveness of these treatments in paediatric patients is mainly influenced by early treatment onset; therefore, the implementation of neonatal screening is recommended. Conclusions: The RET-AME consensus recommendations provide a frame of reference for the appropriate use of disease-modifying treatments in patients with SMA. Resumen: Introducción: La atrofia muscular espinal (AME) es una enfermedad neurodegenerativa, causada por una mutación bialélica del gen 5q SMN1, que afecta predominantemente a las neuronas motoras de la asta anterior medular causando una progresiva debilidad y atrofia muscular. La aparición de tratamientos modificadores del curso de la enfermedad está cambiando considerablemente la historia natural de la AME, pero existe todavía incertidumbre sobre qué pacientes se pueden beneficiar de estos tratamientos y cómo se debería medir ese beneficio. Metodología: Un grupo de expertos especialistas en neurología, neuropediatría, rehabilitación y de la asociación de pacientes FundAME analizaron, siguiendo la metodología Delphi, 5 apartados relacionados con el uso de los nuevos tratamientos: aspectos generales; objetivos del tratamiento; herramientas de medición de resultados; requisitos de los centros tratantes; y regulación de su uso. Se definió como consenso cuando una respuesta recibió al menos el 80% de los votos. Resultados: Los protocolos de tratamiento son útiles para regular el uso de medicamentos de alto impacto y deben constituir una guía para el tratamiento, pero se deben actualizar regularmente para recoger la evidencia más reciente disponible y su implementación se debe valorar de forma individualizada. La edad, la funcionalidad basal y, en el caso de los niños, el tipo de AME y el número de copias de SMN2 son características que se deben tener en cuenta a la hora de establecer los objetivos terapéuticos, las herramientas de medición y el uso de dichos tratamientos. El aspecto más determinante del coste-efectividad de estos tratamientos en la edad pediátrica es su inicio precoz, por lo que se recomienda la instauración de un cribado neonatal. Conclusiones: Las recomendaciones del consenso RET-AME proporcionan un marco de referencia para el uso adecuado de tratamientos modificadores de la enfermedad en pacientes con AME.

In this study, an extension on the previously reported status of the COllaborative Carbon Column Observing Network's (COCCON) calibration procedures incorporating refined methods is presented. COCCON is a global network of portable Bruker EM27/SUN FTIR spectrometers for deriving column-averaged atmospheric abundances of greenhouse gases. The original laboratory open-path lamp measurements for deriving the instrumental line shape (ILS) of the spectrometer from water vapour lines have been refined and extended to the secondary detector channel incorporated in the EM27/SUN spectrometer for detection of carbon monoxide (CO). The refinements encompass improved spectroscopic line lists for the relevant water lines and a revision of the laboratory pressure measurements used for the analysis of the spectra. The new results are found to be in good agreement with those reported by Frey et al. (2019) and discussed in detail. In addition, a new calibration cell for ILS measurements was designed, constructed and put into service. Spectrometers calibrated since January 2020 were tested using both methods for ILS characterization, open-path (OP) and cell measurements. We demonstrate that both methods can detect the small variations in ILS characteristics between different spectrometers, but the results of the cell method indicate a systematic bias of the OP method. Finally, a revision and extension of the COCCON network instrument-to-instrument calibration factors for XCO2, XCO and XCH4 is presented, incorporating 47 new spectrometers (of 83 in total by now). This calibration is based on the reference EM27/SUN spectrometer operated by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and spectra collected by the collocated TCCON station Karlsruhe. Variations in the instrumental characteristics of the reference EM27/SUN from 2014 to 2017 were detected, probably arising from realignment and the dual-channel upgrade performed in early 2018. These variations are considered in the evaluation of the instrument-specific calibration factors in order to keep all tabulated calibration results consistent.

The objective of this study is to derive methane (CH4) emissions from three landfills, which are found to be the most significant CH4 sources in the metropolitan area of Madrid in Spain. We derive CH4 emissions from the CH4 enhancements observed by spaceborne and ground-based instruments. We apply satellite-based measurements from the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) and the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) together with measurements from the ground-based COllaborative Carbon Column Observing Network (COCCON) instruments. In 2018, a 2-week field campaign for measuring the atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases was performed in Madrid in the framework of Monitoring of the Greenhouse Gases Concentrations in Madrid (MEGEI-MAD) project. Five COCCON instruments were deployed at different locations around the Madrid city center, enabling the observation of total column-averaged CH4 mixing ratios (XCH4). Considering the prevalent wind regimes, we calculate the wind-assigned XCH4 anomalies for two opposite wind directions. Pronounced bipolar plumes are found when applying the method to NO2, which implies that our method of wind-assigned anomaly is suitable to estimate enhancements of trace gases at the urban level from satellite-based measurements. For quantifying the CH4 emissions, the wind-assigned plume method is applied to the TROPOMI XCH4 and to the lower tropospheric CH4 / dry-air column ratio (TXCH4) of the combined TROPOMI+IASI product. As CH4 emission strength we estimate 7.4 × 1025 ± 6.4 × 1024 molec. s−1 from the TROPOMI XCH4 data and 7.1 × 1025 ± 1.0 × 1025 molec. s−1 from the TROPOMI+IASI merged TXCH4 data. We use COCCON observations to estimate the local source strength as an independent method. COCCON observations indicate a weaker CH4 emission strength of 3.7 × 1025 molec. s−1 from a local source (the Valdemingómez waste plant) based on observations from a single day. This strength is lower than the one derived from the satellite observations, and it is a plausible result. This is because the analysis of the satellite data refers to a larger area, covering further emission sources in the study region, whereas the signal observed by COCCON is generated by a nearby local source. All emission rates estimated from the different observations are significantly larger than the emission rates provided via the official Spanish Register of Emissions and Pollutant Sources.

We present a global and multi-annual space-borne dataset of tropospheric {H2O, δD} pairs that is based on radiance measurements from the nadir thermal infrared sensor IASI (Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer) on board the Metop satellites of EUMETSAT (European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites). This dataset is an a posteriori processed extension of the MUSICA (MUlti-platform remote Sensing of Isotopologues for investigating the Cycle of Atmospheric water) IASI full product dataset as presented in Schneider et al. (2021b). From the independently retrieved H2O and δD proxy states, their a priori settings and constraints, and their error covariances provided by the IASI full product dataset, we generate an optimal estimation product for pairs of H2O and δD. Here, this standard MUSICA method for deriving {H2O, δD} pairs is extended using an a posteriori reduction of the constraints for improving the retrieval sensitivity at dry conditions. By applying this improved water isotopologue post-processing for all cloud-free MUSICA IASI retrievals, this yields a {H2O, δD} pair dataset for the whole period from October 2014 to December 2020 with global coverage twice per day (local morning and evening overpass times). In total, the dataset covers more than 1500 million individually processed observations. The retrievals are most sensitive to variations in {H2O, δD} pairs within the free troposphere, with up to 30 % of all retrievals containing vertical profile information in the {H2O, δD} pair product. After applying appropriate quality filters, the largest number of reliable pair data arises for tropical and subtropical summer regions, but higher latitudes also show a considerable amount of reliable data. Exemplary time series over the tropical Atlantic and West Africa are chosen to illustrate the potential of the MUSICA IASI {H2O, δD} pair data for atmospheric moisture pathway studies. Furthermore, in order to facilitate the application of this rather comprehensive MUSICA IASI {H2O, δD} pair dataset (referred to as Level-2), we additionally provide the data in a re-gridded and simplified format (Level-3) with focus on the quality-filtered {H2O, δD} pairs in the free troposphere. A technical documentation for guiding the use of both datasets is attached as the Supplement. Finally, the Level-2 dataset is referenced with the DOI https://doi.org/10.35097/415 (Diekmann et al., 2021a) and the Level-3 dataset with DOI https://doi.org/10.35097/495 (Diekmann et al., 2021b).

Forest inventories are essential to accurately estimate different dendrometric and forest stand parameters. However, classical forest inventories are time consuming, slow to conduct, sometimes inaccurate and costly. To address this problem, an efficient alternative approach has been sought and designed that will make this type of field work cheaper, faster, more accurate, and easier to complete. The implementation of this concept has required the development of a specifically designed software called “Artificial Intelligence for Digital Forest (AID-FOREST)”, which is able to process point clouds obtained via mobile terrestrial laser scanning (MTLS) and then, to provide an array of multiple useful and accurate dendrometric and forest stand parameters. Singular characteristics of this approach are: No data pre-processing is required either pre-treatment of forest stand; fully automatic process once launched; no limitations by the size of the point cloud file and fast computations.To validate AID-FOREST, results provided by this software were compared against the obtained from in-situ classical forest inventories. To guaranty the soundness and generality of the comparison, different tree species, plot sizes, and tree densities were measured and analysed. A total of 76 plots (10,887 trees) were selected to conduct both a classic forest inventory reference method and a MTLS (ZEB-HORIZON, Geoslam, ltd.) scanning to obtain point clouds for AID-FOREST processing, known as the MTLS-AIDFOREST method. Thus, we compared the data collected by both methods estimating the average number of trees and diameter at breast height (DBH) for each plot. Moreover, 71 additional individual trees were scanned with MTLS and processed by AID-FOREST and were then felled and divided into logs measuring 1 m in length. This allowed us to accurately measure the DBH, total height, and total volume of the stems.When we compared the results obtained with each methodology, the mean detectability was 97% and ranged from 81.3 to 100%, with a bias (underestimation by MTLS-AIDFOREST method) in the number of trees per plot of 2.8% and a relative root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 9.2%. Species, plot size, and tree density did not significantly affect detectability. However, this parameter was significantly affected by the ecosystem visual complexity index (EVCI). The average DBH per plot was underestimated (but was not significantly different from 0) by the MTLS-AIDFOREST, with the average bias for pooled data being 1.8% with a RMSE of 7.5%. Similarly, there was no statistically significant differences between the two distribution functions of the DBH at the 95.0% confidence level.Regarding the individual tree parameters, MTLS-AIDFOREST underestimated DBH by 0.16 % (RMSE = 5.2 %) and overestimated the stem volume (Vt) by 1.37 % (RMSE = 14.3 %, although the BIAS was not statistically significantly different from 0). However, the MTLS-AIDFOREST method overestimated the total height (Ht) of the trees by a mean 1.33 m (5.1 %; relative RMSE = 11.5 %), because of the different height concepts measured by both methodological approaches. Finally, AID-FOREST required 30 to 66 min per ha−1 to fully automatically process the point cloud data from the *.las file corresponding to a given hectare plot. Thus, applying our MTLS-AIDFOREST methodology to make full forest inventories, required a 57.3 % of the time required to perform classical plot forest inventories (excluding the data postprocessing time in the latter case). El futuro del sistema Tierra-atmósfera dependerá, en gran medida, de nuestra capacidad para entender todos los procesos que están conduciendo al calentamiento global, y sus consecuencias climáticas, y, en este contexto, los gases de efecto invernadero (GEIs) juegan un papel clave como uno de los principales motores del cambio climático. Con esta idea nace el proyecto de investigación INMENSE (IASI for Surveying Methane and Nitrous Oxide in the Troposphere), el cual tiene como objetivo mejorar nuestra compresión de los balances atmosféricos de dos de los más importantes GEIs, el metano (CH4) y el óxido nitroso (N2O). Para ello, el proyecto INMENSE ha generado nuevas observaciones de concentraciones de CH4 y N2O en la troposfera media/alta a escala global a partir de las medidas satelitales del sensor IASI (Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer), que vuela a bordo de los satélites meteorológicos EUMETSAT/Metop. En este trabajo los productos INMENSE IASI de CH4 y N2O son presentados, caracterizados y extensamente validados usando una base de datos de referencia multiplataforma (perfiles verticales de avión, medidas in-situ y remotas desde superficie). Esta completa validación sugiere que los productos IASI de CH4 y N2O tienen una precisión entre el 1-3% y un error sistemático del 2%, así como que son consistentes temporal y espacialmente. Por último, las observaciones IASI de CH4 y N2O sobre la Península Ibérica han sido comparadas a las simulaciones del modelo de transporte químico MOCAGE, analizando el grado de acuerdo entre ambas bases de datos.

Introduction and Objectives: Liver involvement is not unusual in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), where one third of patients have abnormal liver biochemical tests, becoming a diagnostic challenge. Primary biliary cholangitis (CPB) is an autoimmune liver disease that presents with chronic cholestasis, the presence of specific antibodies and histological findings of destructive non-suppurative cholangitis. Genetic, immunological, and environmental factors that contribute to the pathogenesis of IBD may also contribute to associated hepatobiliary disorders. Objective: Present the case of a 67-year-old woman who consulted for cholestatic symptoms. Medical record of smoking for 25 years was suspended 15 years ago with a smoking index of 5. She reported a history of weakness, asthenia, self-limited palmar and plantar pruritus of 2 years of evolution, associated with abnormal liver function tests (total bilirubin 1.8 mg / dl, INR 1.40, albumin 3.2 g / dL). The initial physical examination revealed jaundice in the sclera, palmar erythema, evidence of telangiectasia in the abdomen, collateral circulation with medusa caput, positive ascitic wave, and splenomegaly. R factor is cholestatic, with alkaline phosphatase of 416 U / L, gamma glutamyl transpeptidase 660 U / L, alanine transferase 59 U / L, for which possible viral and autoimmune causes are addressed as the first possibility, reflecting antimitochondrial antibodies with high titers (278 U / L), associated with immunoglobulin G of 2490 mg / dl and immunoglobulin M of 734 mg / dl. During her one-year follow-up, she reported the onset of diarrheal stools Bristol 6, 2 to 3 episodes per day, with occasional urgency and with inflammatory characteristics, due to the presence of mucus and blood. Infectious causes are ruled out, elevated acute phase reactants are reported, followed up with a colonoscopy and biopsy samples, reporting the presence of nonspecific proctitis, chronic colitis with focal ulceration, lymphoid aggregates, focal atrophy, and glandular distortion compatible with ulcerative colitis (UC). (Panel A) Due to the unusual association between UC and PBC, magnetic resonance cholangiography was requested, ruling out the overlap syndrome between primary biliary cholangitis and primary sclerosing cholangitis. (Panel B) Discussion: A diverse heterogeneous group of hepatobiliary manifestations is reported in both UC and CD, and approximately 5% of adults with IBD have developed chronic liver disease. PBC is not usually associated with IBD, and concomitant reported cases are anecdotal. The presentations are different than the typical CBP without UC. PBC usually affects middle-aged women. The sex ratio is 10: 1 (female to male) and the mean age at diagnosis is 57.5 years. While the disease tends to affect men more often, with a female / male sex ratio of 2: 1 when associated with IBD. The distribution of ulcerative colitis in PBC patients is usually mild with limited bowel involvement. In a review by Tasa et al., eleven of 15 patients described left side colitis and proctitis. Conclusion: The association between PBC and UC remains rare, as there are still few reported cases regarding the combined presentation of these diseases. Although PSC is the most specific hepatobiliary manifestation among UC patients with cholestasis, PBC should be considered in those with unexplained intrahepatic cholestasis. The use of a reliable test such as AMAs is of utmost importance to avoid misdiagnosis and/or under diagnosis.The authors declare that there is no conflict of interest.

The relaxor behavior of PLZT ferroelectric ceramics has been analyzed in a wide frequency and temperature ranges, below and above the temperature for the formation of the so-called polar nano-regions (PNRs). An approximation to the dynamical behavior of the PNRs has been discussed using Cole–Cole’s relaxation model and Jonscher’s Universal Relaxation Law. The analysis considers both the dipolar contribution and those ones associated with DC and AC electric conductivities, this latter not being previously reported in the literature for relaxor materials. The effectiveness of the developed model has been verified from the agreement between the experimental data and the theoretical calculations. This study also offers an indirect method to predict the DC component of the electrical conductivity.

This study examines the ferroelectric, pyroelectric, and dielectric properties of La-doped bismuth sodium titanate ceramics Bi0.5Na0.51−xLaxTiO3 (BNLT), using amounts of 0–6.7 at. % La. The precursor powders used to make dense BNLT ceramics were obtained via the sol–gel method using the acetic acid route. All samples were calcined at 700 °C for 1 h and sintered at 1150 °C for 30 min in an encapsulated crucible to avoid Na and Bi volatilization yielding relative densities equal to or higher than 94%. The obtained x-ray diffraction patterns, typical of the perovskite structure, confirm the incorporation of lanthanum into the lattice, which evolved from a rhombohedral phase to a mixture of rhombohedral and cubic structures at higher concentrations. The thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry results indicate that the crystallization of precursor powders of BNT takes place between 500 and 700 °C. In addition, the scanning electron microscopy micrographs reveal a decrease in grain size from 4.5 to 0.5 µm with increasing La content. The ferroelectric hysteresis curves show that the best ferroelectric properties were obtained for BNT 1.3% La, where the obtained values of remnant polarization and coercive field were Pr = 29 µC/cm2 and Ec = 39 kV/cm, respectively. At this concentration, the pyroelectric response shows a higher value, four times higher than the pyroelectric signal of pure BNT.

An early warning system for flood prediction based on precipitation forecast is presented. The system uses rainfall forecast provided by MeteoGalicia in combination with a hydrologic (Hydrologic Modeling System, HEC-HMS) and a hydraulic (Iber+) model. The upper reach of the Miño River and the city of Lugo (NW Spain) are used as a study area. Starting from rainfall forecast, HEC-HMS calculates the streamflow and Iber+ is automatically executed for some previously defined risk areas when a certain threshold is exceeded. The analysis based on historical extreme events shows that the system can provide accurate results in less than 1 h for a forecast horizon of 3 d and report an alert situation to decision makers.

El objetivo del presente trabajo es revisar la literatura que ha comparado el efecto de la actividad física (AF) en entornos naturales (AFMN) y artificiales (AFEA) sobre la atención selectiva (AS). Para ello se ha realizado una búsqueda en diferentes bases de datos como PubMed, Google académico y Sports DISCUS. Todas las búsquedas se realizaron desde el enero de 2000 hasta diciembre de 2019 a través de palabras clave como atención selectiva, ejercicio verde, actividad física, universitarios o estudiantes. Se excluyeron los artículos en los que la población no fuera exclusivamente estudiantes universitarios o no se especificaran variables metodológicas como el tipo de ejercicio realizado o el test de medición de la AS. Se seleccionaron un total de seis artículos que cumplieron todos los criterios de inclusión. Del análisis de estas investigaciones se concluye que la AFMN no presenta un efecto significativamente superior en la AS en comparación con la AEFA. La implementación de diversas mejoras metodológicas sería necesaria en futuras investigaciones.

Se da a conocer la presencia de este taxón endémico del este de la península ibérica en la provincia de Cuenca y en Castilla-La Mancha, del cual no había referencias previas debidamente documentadas. Además se dan apuntes sobre su posición taxonómica y se comenta su hábitat. Por último, se muestra su grado de amenaza en el territorio, según los criterios de la UICN.

Among the more than 20 ground-based FTIR (Fourier transform infrared) stations currently operating around the globe, only a few have provided formaldehyde (HCHO) total column time series until now. Although several independent studies have shown that the FTIR measurements can provide formaldehyde total columns with good precision, the spatial coverage has not been optimal for providing good diagnostics for satellite or model validation. Furthermore, these past studies used different retrieval settings, and biases as large as 50 % can be observed in the HCHO total columns depending on these retrieval choices, which is also a weakness for validation studies combining data from different ground-based stations.For the present work, the HCHO retrieval settings have been optimized based on experience gained from past studies and have been applied consistently at the 21 participating stations. Most of them are either part of the Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change (NDACC) or under consideration for membership. We provide the harmonized settings and a characterization of the HCHO FTIR products. Depending on the station, the total systematic and random uncertainties of an individual HCHO total column measurement lie between 12 % and 27 % and between 1 and 11×1014 molec cm−2, respectively. The median values among all stations are 13 % and 2.9×1014 molec cm−2 for the total systematic and random uncertainties.This unprecedented harmonized formaldehyde data set from 21 ground-based FTIR stations is presented and its comparison with a global chemistry transport model shows consistency in absolute values as well as in seasonal cycles. The network covers very different concentration levels of formaldehyde, from very clean levels at the limit of detection (few 1013 molec cm−2) to highly polluted levels (7×1016 molec cm−2). Because the measurements can be made at any time during daylight, the diurnal cycle can be observed and is found to be significant at many stations. These HCHO time series, some of them starting in the 1990s, are crucial for past and present satellite validation and will be extended in the coming years for the next generation of satellite missions.

Over 20 years of stratospheric NO2 vertical column density (VCD) data from ground-based zenith DOAS spectrometers were used for trend analysis, specifically, via multiple linear regression. Spectrometers from the Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change (NDACC) cover the subtropical latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere (Izaña, 28° N), the southern Subantarctic (Ushuaia, 55° S) and Antarctica (Marambio, 64° S, and Belgrano, 78° S). The results show that for the period 1993–2014, a mean positive decadal trend of +8.7 % was found in the subtropical Northern Hemisphere stations, and negative decadal trends of −8.7 and −13.8 % were found in the Southern Hemisphere at Ushuaia and Marambio, respectively; all trends are statistically significant at 95 %. Belgrano only shows a significant decadal trend of −11.3 % in the summer/autumn period. Most of the trends result from variations after 2005. The trend in the diurnal build-up per hour (DBU) was used to estimate the change in the rate of N2O5 conversion to NO2 during the day. With minor differences, the results reproduce those obtained for NO2. The trends computed for individual months show large month-to-month variability. At Izaña, the maximum occurs in December (+13.1 %), dropping abruptly to lower values in the first part of the year. In the Southern Hemisphere, the polar vortex dominates the monthly distributions of the trends. At Marambio, the maximum occurs in mid-winter (−21 %), whereas at the same time, the Ushuaia trend is close to its annual minimum (−7 %). The large difference in the trends at these two relatively close stations suggests a vortex shift towards the Atlantic/South American area over the past few years. Finally, the hemispheric asymmetry obtained in this work is discussed in the framework of the results obtained by previous works that considered tracer analysis and Brewer–Dobson circulation. The results obtained here provide evidence that the NO2 produced by N2O decomposition is not the only cause of the observed trend in the stratosphere and support recent publications pointing to a dynamical redistribution starting in the past decade.

Ozone profile trends over the period 2000 to 2016 from several merged satellite ozone data sets and from ground-based data measured by four techniques at stations of the Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change indicate significant ozone increases in the upper stratosphere, between 35 and 48 km altitude (5 and 1 hPa). Near 2 hPa (42 km), ozone has been increasing by about 1.5 % per decade in the tropics (20° S to 20° N), and by 2 to 2.5 % per decade in the 35 to 60° latitude bands of both hemispheres. At levels below 35 km (5 hPa), 2000 to 2016 ozone trends are smaller and not statistically significant. The observed trend profiles are consistent with expectations from chemistry climate model simulations. This study confirms positive trends of upper stratospheric ozone already reported, e.g., in the WMO/UNEP Ozone Assessment 2014 or by Harris et al. (2015). Compared to those studies, three to four additional years of observations, updated and improved data sets with reduced drift, and the fact that nearly all individual data sets indicate ozone increase in the upper stratosphere, all give enhanced confidence. Uncertainties have been reduced, for example for the trend near 2 hPa in the 35 to 60° latitude bands from about ±5 % (2σ) in Harris et al. (2015) to less than ±2 % (2σ). Nevertheless, a thorough analysis of possible drifts and differences between various data sources is still required, as is a detailed attribution of the observed increases to declining ozone-depleting substances and to stratospheric cooling. Ongoing quality observations from multiple independent platforms are key for verifying that recovery of the ozone layer continues as expected.

Abstract The stabilization of δ-phase of poly(vinylidene fluoride) PVDF in a 14 µm-thickness ferroelectric membrane is achieved by a simple route based on the use of a dimethylformamide (DMF)/acetone solvent, in which the application of external electric field is not required. X-ray diffraction and calorimetric experiments on heating reveal that, at 154 °C, the original mixture between ferroelectric δ-phase and paraelectric α-phase transits to a system with only this latter phase in the crystalline fraction. A gradual and slight increment of amorphous fraction up to the melting at 161 °C is also observed. The existence of δ-phase is corroborated by the occurrence of a broad maximum around 154 °C in dielectric permittivity measurements, as well as the hysteresis loops observed at room temperature. These results suggest a wide thermal window for a stable δ-phase, between room temperature and 154 °C, a subsequent transition into α-phase and the corresponding melting at 161 °C. The broad dielectric maximum observed around 154 °C in dielectric and calorimetric measurements, can be associated with a diffuse ferroelectric-paraelectric transition.

La oportunidad de retomar el estudio del dolmen del Portillo de las Cortes, Guadalajara, a partir de los materiales conservados en el MAN y de recientes trabajos de campo, ofrece un resultado positivo. Podemos aportar el conocimiento de fuentes de aprovisionamiento, una fecha C14 obtenida de un cráneo recientemente documentado en la reestructuración del MAN, y una nueva lectura de posibles refacturas del monumento.

Introduction: Ohtahara syndrome (OS, OMIM #308350, ORPHA1934) is an early-onset epileptic encephalopathy (EOEE) characterised by spasms, intractable seizures, suppression-burst pattern on the electroencephalogram, and severe psychomotor retardation. Mutations in STXBP1 – a gene that codes for syntaxin binding protein 1 and is involved in synaptic vesicle exocytosis – has been identified in most patients with OS. Patient and results: We report the case of a 19-month-old child with OS who displays a previously unreported mutation in STXBP1 (c.1249+2T>C, G417AfsX7). This mutation is located in a donor splice site and eliminates exon 14, resulting in a truncated protein. Conclusion: This previously unreported STXBP1 mutation in a subject with Ohtahara syndrome and non-lesional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) broadens the mutational spectrum associated with this devastating epileptic syndrome. Conventional real-time coincidence systems use electronic circuitry to detect coincident pulses (hardware coincidence). In this work, a new concept of coincidence system based on real-time software (software coincidence) is presented. This system is based on the recurrent supervision of the analogue-to-digital converters status, which is described in detail. A prototype has been designed and built using a low-cost development platform. It has been applied to two different experimental sets for cosmic ray muon detection. Experimental muon measurements recorded simultaneously using conventional hardware coincidence and our software coincidence system have been compared, yielding identical results. These measurements have also been validated using simultaneous neutron monitor observations. This new software coincidence system provides remarkable advantages such as higher simplicity of interconnection and adjusting. Thus, our system replaces, at least, three Nuclear Instrument Modules (NIMs) required by conventional coincidence systems, reducing its cost by a factor of 40 and eliminating pulse delay adjustments.

Ground-based Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) measurements of solar absorption spectra can provide ozone total columns with a precision of 2% but also independent partial column amounts in about four vertical layers, one in the troposphere and three in the stratosphere up to about 45km, with a precision of 5–6%. We use eight of the Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change (NDACC) stations having a long-term time series of FTIR ozone measurements to study the total and vertical ozone trends and variability, namely, Ny-Ålesund (79° N), Thule (77° N), Kiruna (68° N), Harestua (60° N), Jungfraujoch (47° N), Izaña (28° N), Wollongong (34° S) and Lauder (45° S). The length of the FTIR time series varies by station but is typically from about 1995 to present. We applied to the monthly means of the ozone total and four partial columns a stepwise multiple regression model including the following proxies: solar cycle, quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO), El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), Arctic and Antarctic Oscillation (AO/AAO), tropopause pressure (TP), equivalent latitude (EL), Eliassen–Palm flux (EPF), and volume of polar stratospheric clouds (VPSC). At the Arctic stations, the trends are found mostly negative in the troposphere and lower stratosphere, very mixed in the middle stratosphere, positive in the upper stratosphere due to a large increase in the 1995–2003 period, and non-significant when considering the total columns. The trends for mid-latitude and subtropical stations are all non-significant, except at Lauder in the troposphere and upper stratosphere and at Wollongong for the total columns and the lower and middle stratospheric columns where they are found positive. At Jungfraujoch, the upper stratospheric trend is close to significance (+0.9 ± 1.0% decade−1). Therefore, some signs of the onset of ozone mid-latitude recovery are observed only in the Southern Hemisphere, while a few more years seem to be needed to observe it at the northern mid-latitude station.

Experimental investigations and thermodynamic calculations of the phase relations of a cordierite-rich monzogranite from the Cabeza de Araya batholith (Cáceres, Spain) have been performed to understand the formation of cordierite. The experiments failed to crystallize cordierite in the pressure range 200-600MPa, in the temperature range 700-975ºC and for different water activities (melt water contents between 2 and 6 wt.%). In contrast, clinopyroxene and orthopyroxene (absent in the natural mineral rock assemblage), together with biotite, were observed as ferromagnesian assemblage in a wide range of experimental conditions. Thermodynamic calculations, using the software PERPLE_X, describe the formation of cordierite only at 200 and 400MPa and very low water contents, and the amount of cordierite formed in the models is always below 3.5 vol.%. The results indicate that cordierite is not in equilibrium with the bulk rock compositions. The most probable explanation was that cordierite nucleated and crystallized from a melt that is not in equilibrium with part of the mineral assemblage present in the magma. This “non-reactive” mineral assemblage was mainly composed of plagioclase. The silicate melts from which cordierite crystallized was more Al-rich and K-rich than the silicate melt composition in equilibrium with the bulk composition. One possible process for the high Al content of the silicate melt is related to assimilation and partial melting of Al-rich metasediments. An exo-perictetic reaction is assumed to account for both textural and geochemical observations. On the other hand, hybridization processes typical for calc-alkaline series can also explain the high proportions of “non-reactive” minerals observed in relatively high temperature magmas. This study clearly demonstrates that silicate melts in a crystal mush can depart significantly from the composition of melt that should be in equilibrium with the bulk solid assemblage.

Advances in the understanding and prediction of tsunami impacts allow for the development of risk reduction strategies for tsunami-prone areas. This paper presents a tsunami vulnerability and risk assessment for the case study of El Salvador, the applied methodology dealing with the complexity and variability of coastal zones by means of (i) an integral approach to cover the entire risk-related process from the hazard, vulnerability and risk assessments to the final risk management; (ii) an integrated approach to combine and aggregate the information stemming from the different dimensions of coupled human and natural systems; and (iii) a dynamic and scale-dependent approach to integrate the spatiotemporal variability considerations. This work also aims at establishing a clear connection to translate the vulnerability and risk assessment results into adequate target-oriented risk reduction measures, trying to bridge the gap between science and management for the tsunami hazard. The approach is applicable to other types of hazards, having been successfully applied to climate-change-related flooding hazard.

La actinomicosis es una patología poco frecuente y su manifestación en la pared abdominal es más infrecuente aún. Está causada por Actinomyces israeli, una bacteria filamentosa, anaerobia estricta, gram positiva, que es comensal en el organismo y que en su forma patógena produce fibrosis, tejido de granulación y abscesos. La forma más frecuente es la cérvico-facial. Presentamos un caso de actinomicosis de pared abdominal diagnosticado postoperatoriamente, con sospecha prequirúrgica de proceso tumoral, por lo que queremos hacer especial mención acerca de la importancia del diagnóstico diferencial de actinomicetoma ante la presencia de una masa abdominal.

La cirugía conservadora del miembro es el objetivo ideal a lograr en el tratamiento del sarcoma de extremidades. La tasa de amputaciones en este tipo de tumores se ha reducido considerablemente. La combinación de cirugía conservadora de miembro y radioterapia proporciona los mismos resultados oncológicos con la ventaja de preservar el miembro y su función. A pesar de esto, todavía existen indicaciones de amputación de extremidades, como cuando se trata de masas que afectan al eje neurovascular principal del miembro, entre otras. En estos casos, puede ser útil el uso de colgajos fileteados para preservar la longitud del miembro o para cubrir estructuras nobles. Presentamos el caso clínico de un paciente con sarcoma fusocelular de alto grado de la rodilla en el que empleamos un colgajo libre plantar fileteado para preservar la articulación.

Solar Cybertech is a conquest/subject at Universidad Politecnica de Madrid where student teams deal with electronics and renewable energies. The conquest is based in the design and construction of a vehicle powered by solar panels to complete a circuit that has different zones as a flat region, rising and falling slopes and a shaded region as well where different operating conditions are required. To optimize the energy consumed by the motors of the vehicles from the solar panels, a dc-dc converter is used. The control stage of the converter is digital and a maximum power point tracking algorithm has been used. Besides these objectives, this subject is intended to enhance the team work and cooperation as well as the application of the theoretical knowledge in a practical application.

Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the results of sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) in cutaneous melanoma at our institution. Materials and Methods: 128 patients with primary cutaneous melanoma who underwent SLNB between April, 2004, and August, 2010 were studied. Univariate and multivariate analysis was performed to explore the effect of variables on mortality and sentinel node status. Survival analysis was performed using the Kaplan-Meier approach. Results: Positive SLNB were detected in 35 (27.3%) of 128 cases. Mean Breslow depths were 3.7 mm for SLNB positive patients and 1.99 mm for SLNB negative patients. False negative rate was 1%. The recurrence rate was 40% for positive patients and 6.5% for negative patients (odds ratio 9.7 [confidence interval 95 % 3.3-28.1]). 33 patients (29%) had an ulcerated melanoma, 12 (10.5%) in the positive group and 21 (18.5%) in the negative group. The disease recurred in a 48.5% of patients with ulcerated melanoma, but only in a 2.5% of patients with non-ulcerated melanoma. Upon multivariate analysis, only Breslow thickness (P = 0.005) demonstrate statistically significance for SLNB status. Multivariate analysis for clinicopathologic predictors of death demonstrate statistically significance for Breslow thickness (P = 0.020), ulceration (P = 0.030) and sentinel node status (P = 0.020). Conclusions: This study confirms that the status of the sentinel node is a strong independent prognostic factor with a higher risk of death and lower survival. Patients with ulcerated melanoma are more likely to develop recurrence, and also higher risk of death than patients with non-ulcerated melanoma.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is retrieved daily and globally from space-borne IASI radiance spectra using the Fast Optimal Retrievals on Layers for IASI (FORLI) software developed at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB). The IASI CO total column product for 2008 from the most recent FORLI retrieval version (20100815) is evaluated using correlative CO profile products retrieved from ground-based solar absorption Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) observations at the following FTIR spectrometer sites from the Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change (NDACC): Ny-Ålesund, Kiruna, Bremen, Jungfraujoch, Izaña and Wollongong. In order to have good statistics for the comparisons, we included all IASI data from the same day, within a 100 km radius around the ground-based stations. The individual ground-based data were adjusted to the lowest altitude of the co-located IASI CO profiles. To account for the different vertical resolutions and sensitivities of the ground-based and satellite measurements, the averaging kernels associated with the various retrieved products have been used to properly smooth coincident data products. It has been found that the IASI CO total column products compare well on average with the co-located ground-based FTIR total columns at the selected NDACC sites and that there is no significant bias for the mean values at all stations.

The impedance properties in polarized piezoelectric can be described by electric equivalent circuits. The classic circuit used in the literature to describe real systems is formed by one resistor (R), one inductance (L) and one capacitance C connected in series and one capacity (C0) connected in parallel with the formers. Nevertheless, the equation that describe the resonance and anti-resonance frequencies depends on a complex manner of R, L, C and C0. In this work is proposed a simpler model formed by one inductance (L) and one capacity (C) in series; one capacity (C0) in parallel; one resistor (RP) in parallel and one resistor (RS) in series with other components. Unlike the traditional circuit, the equivalent circuit elements in the proposed model can be simply determined by knowing the experimental values of the resonance frequency fr, anti-resonance frequency fa, impedance module at resonance frequency |Zr|, impedance module at anti-resonance frequency |Za| and low frequency capacitance C0, without fitting the impedance experimental data to the obtained equation.

Conventional solid state reaction method, from oxides and carbonates, was employed to prepare bismuth (Bi)-based multiferroic systems. The undoped BiFeO3 (BFO) and the codoped system with Ba, La and Ti (Bi1−xBaxFe1−yTiyO3, Bi1−x−zBaxLazFe1−yTiyO3) with x,y,z=0.1 were prepared stoichiometrically and sintered at two different temperatures. The structural and magnetic properties were investigated at room temperature. XRD measurements confirm the obtaining of the rhombohedral perovskite structure of the BFO family system. For the undoped system, some reflections of undesired phases are present for two different sintering temperatures, while for the doped system only one phase is present for both temperatures. The magnetic characterization at room temperature revealed remarkable differences between the ceramic samples. The results show that for undoped BFO system, spontaneous magnetization is not observed at room temperature. Nevertheless, in doped one, a well-defined ferromagnetic behavior is observed at room temperature, possible, due to the suppression of the spatially modulated spin structure of BFO promoted by the reduction of the rhombohedral distortion and the weakening of the Bi–O bonds. The XPS results confirm the presence of oxygen vacancies and the coexistence of Fe3+ and Fe2+ in all the studied samples. Calorimetric measurements reveal that the dopant incorporation has not a direct effect in Néel temperature but possibly yes in ferroelectric-paraelectric transition.

We show that the near infrared solar absorption spectra recorded in the framework of the Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON) can be used to derive the vertical distribution of tropospheric water vapour. The resolution of the TCCON spectra of 0.02 cm−1 is sufficient for retrieving lower and middle/upper tropospheric water vapour concentrations with a vertical resolution of about 3 and 8 km, respectively. We document the good quality of the remotely-sensed profiles by comparisons with coincident in-situ Vaisala RS92 radiosonde measurements. Due to the high measurement frequency, the TCCON water vapour profile data offer novel opportunities for estimating the water vapour variability at different timescales and altitudes.

Las metástasis cutáneas de los tumores del aparato digestivo son lesiones infrecuentes que aparecen en pacientes con estadíos avanzados de la enfermedad, frecuentemente ya intervenidos del tumor primario. Son lesiones que aparecen de novo, de características variables y crecimiento rápido; suelen localizarse en tronco o extremidades inferiores y se diagnostican precozmente, lo que hace fácil su extirpación y el cierre directo del defecto. Presentamos el caso de un paciente con cáncer de colon en estadío avanzado con lesión metastásica facial de 6 cm de diámetro en mejilla derecha. Esta lesión ulcerada y maloliente, precisaba curas diarias y empeoraba la calidad de vida del paciente. Se procedió a su extirpación y para cobertura realizamos un colgajo submentoniano ipsilateral con excelente resultado. Este colgajo proporciona un tejido muy parecido al del defecto, creando mínimas secuelas de la zona donante que queda oculta en el área de sombra submandibular, por lo que representa una alternativa terapéutica ideal en defectos faciales de tamaño medio.Cutaneous metastasis of the digestive tract are infrequent lesions appearing in patients with advanced disease. Most of these patients have been already operated of their primary tumour. Lesions are variable in aspect, arising de novo and evolving with rapid growth. They usually lie in the trunk or lower extremities thus facilitating an early diagnosis and management with simple extirpation and direct closure. A case-report of a patient with advanced colonic cancer is here presented. At admission he presented a cutaneous matastasic lesion in the right cheek; it was a 6 cm ulcerated, bad -smelling lesion which needed daily dressings affecting patient's normal life. The lesion was removed using successfully a submental flap as coverage. The submental flap provides a very similar tissue to facial defects, leaving no donor area sequelae which is in addition well hidden, being consequently a good tool for midsize facial defects.

El objetivo del estudio es el de profundizar en el conocimiento del comportamiento de la FC de los futbolistas profesionales en competición, identificando los criterios más relevantes que definen el contexto de la situación de juego donde el jugador profesional presenta un incremento acusado, en sus valores de frecuencia cardiaca en competición, elaborando un perfil definitorio del tipo de situación de juego asociado a una alta carga fisiológica. Para alcanzar los objetivos mencionados se ha recurrido a una metodología mixta, en la que se complementa la utilización de la metodología observacional con una metodología selectiva. Para el análisis de datos se retuvieron un total de 153 casos, correspondientes a un total de 6 jugadores profesionales pertenecientes a la primera plantilla del R.C. Celta de Vigo, equipo clasificado para disputar la Champion League en la temporada 2003/04. Los resultados parecen indicar que son tres los criterios que permiten disponer de un modelo con una alta capacidad explicativa de más del 80% de la varianza del comportamiento de la FC, medido por los incrementos acusados y las disminuciones en sus valores: centro de juego, rol, y oposición, especialmente el primero de ellos resulta clave a la hora de poder explicarlo o predecirlo. Palabras Clave: fútbol, frecuencia cardiaca, situación de juego, centro de juego.The aim of the study is of going more deeply into the knowledge of the behaviour of the HR of the professional football players into competition, identifying the most relevant criteria that define the context of the game situation where the professional players presents a marked increase in his values of HR in competition, elaborating a distinctive profile of the type of game situation associated with a high physiological load. To reach the mentioned aims it has resorted to a mixed methodology, in which the utilization of the methodology observational in complemented with a selective methodology. For the analysis of information there were retained a whole of 153 cases, correspondents to a whole of 6 professional players belonging to the first team of the R.C. Celta de Vigo, classified to dispute the Champions League in the season 2003/04. The results seem to indicate that they are three criteria that they allow arrange of a model with a high explanatory capacity of more than 80% of the variance of the behaviour of the HR, measured by the marked increases and the decreases in the values: centre of game, role and opposition, specially the first of them turns out to be key at the moment of being able to explain or predict it.Key Words: soccer, heart rate, game situation, centre of game.

In this article a comparative study of the behaviour of different commercial anti-graffiti on natural stone and brick is presented. 8 different European substrates were selected and 4 commercial anti-graffiti of different chemical nature were applied on these substrates. The variations of their hydric properties and aspect (colour and gloss) with regard to the untreated substrates were later studied in the laboratory. The results obtained permitted to assess the suitability of 4 of the main types of chemical formulations employed to be used as anti-graffiti. This study concludes that the sacrificial anti-graffiti with polymeric paraffins in its composition presents the lowest reductions of the hydric properties of the studied substrates, being also the variations in colour the least perceptible.

Objective: knowledge regarding prognostic factors in gastric cancer is essential to decide on single patient management. We aim to establish the value of large lymph node size in order to improve perioperative approach. Material and methods: charts of one hundred and twenty-eight consecutive patients undergoing gastrectomy for resectable gastric cancer were reviewed between January 1996 and December 2005. Patients were split in two groups according to large lymph node size harvested, group I, lymph node size ≤ 10 mm and group II, lymph node size > 10 mm. Overall five-year survival related to cancer were analyzed as a main endpoint. Prognostic factors as TNM classification and degree of differentiation have been considered. Results: there were no differences regarding age and gender (67.4 vs. 64; p = 0.34 and 66,1 vs. 68,1%; p = 0.27, respectively). Nevertheless, a significant difference has been found according to T1-T2 of TNM stage (78.1 vs. 39.1% p = < 0.001), for N grade staging, has statistical signification for grade N0 (62.7 vs. 30.5%; p < 0.001), and for Ia and Ib stages (57.6 vs. 17.4%). Five years overall survival has a great statistical signification (p log-rank = 0.0003), however, overall survival between groups with positive lymph nodes according to lymph node size was close to signification, (p log-rank = 0.0636). Conclusions: our data indicates that large lymph node size could be a powerful predictor for overall survival in gastric cancer, when it could be evaluated in preoperative period. In our opinion lymph node size should be considered for perioperative chemotherapy schemas. Detection and staging techniques for lymph node affection acquire much more importance.Objetivo: valorar el interés del diámetro del ganglio mayor extirpado como factor pronóstico en los pacientes intervenidos por cáncer gástrico, para determinar si su detección puede ser un factor de interés en el periodo preoperatorio, para indicar tratamiento neoadyuvante. Material y métodos: se analiza un registro de 128 casos consecutivos de pacientes afectos de adenocarcinoma gástrico resecable, durante un periodo de 10 años en los que en el estudio anatomopatológico se determinó el diámetro del ganglio mayor aislado. Se estudia la relación del mismo con factores pronósticos universalmente aceptados, el grado de penetración, la presencia y extensión de metástasis ganglionares y el estadio TNM, y con la supervivencia a 5 años, estudiándose dos grupos, el grupo I compuesto por aquellos enfermos con diámetro menor o igual a 10 mm, y el grupo II con diámetros superiores a 10 mm. Resultados: no se han detectado diferencias estadísticas respecto a edad y sexo (67,4 vs. 64; p = 0,34 y 66,1 vs. 68,1%; p = 0,27, respectivamente). Existen diferencias significativas entre ambos grupos en el grado de penetración tumoral, T1-T2, (78,1% por 39,1%, p < 0,001), en el porcentaje de pacientes sin metástasis ganglionares (62,7 vs. 30,5%; p < 0,001), así como en el porcentaje de estadios precoces (Ia y Ib, 57,6% por 17,4, p < 0,001). La supervivencia global acumulada a los 60 meses fue significativa entre ambos grupos (p log-rank = 0,0003), aunque sin alcanzar significación estadística en los pacientes N+ (p < 0,006). Conclusiones: la relación del diámetro ganglionar mayor puede ser un factor pronóstico útil y junto con otros factores pronósticos facilitaría la valoración de quimioterapia neoadyuvante. Su detección mediante exploraciones complementarias adquiriría por consiguiente un mayor interés.

Las extravasaciones de agentes quimioterápicos son complicaciones relativamente poco frecuentes, pero de gran importancia, de la terapia con estas drogas. Entre todos, la adriamicina es el agente que presenta mayor potencial ulcerógeno una vez producida la extravasación. En la actualidad el tratamiento de elección de estos accidentes es el lavado-aspiración de la zona realizado de urgencias, quedando el tratamiento quirúrgico indicado en caso que se presente necrosis cutánea o bien el dolor persista más allá de 72 horas. Las opciones quirúrgicas deben tener en cuenta no sólo el estado local de la situación sino el contexto oncológico del propio paciente. Se revisa el estado actual de la cuestión, las opciones terapéuticas y las indicaciones quirúrgicas presentando dos casos de extravasación con criterios quirúrgicos y la técnica de cobertura elegida.

Las propiedades del oro hacen que sea considerado un metal inatacable y que puede resistirde forma indefinida el paso del tiempo. Esto es una realidad parcial, ya que debido a algunasde las características del oro (o metales aleados a él) y del entorno que ha rodeado a estaspiezas auríferas, el material puede verse atacado por diversos contaminantes con distintaprocedencia. Este hecho puede ser importante en el caso del "oro arqueológico", que esobjeto de estudio desde el Dpto. de Prehistoria del Instituto de Historia, en colaboracióncon el Dpto. de Metalurgia Física del CENIM. En este trabajo abordamos una visióngeneral sobre las propiedades, obtención, etc, del oro y presentamos dos ejemplos de piezasdel Patrimonio Histórico, como muestras de un metal eterno e inmutable o comorepresentación de un oro mudable, que envejece, se deteriora y contamina. El primerejemplo corresponde a fragmentos de lámina del dolmen de Matarrubilla (Sevilla), datadoen el III milenio a.C; mientras que la segunda pieza corresponde a fragmentos de dosdiademas-cinturón procedentes de Moñes (Asturias), en cuyo caso la datación está fechadaentre los siglos III y I a.C.

The aim of this study was, first, to investigate the influence of olive variety and elevation of orchards on the phenolic compound content of Sicilian virgin olive oils (VOOs) and, second, to investigate the effects of VOO phenolic extracts on osteoblast cell growth using the human MG-63 osteosarcoma cell line. Olive oil phenolic content and its effect on human osteosarcoma cell proliferation varied according to the type of cultivar and the grove altitude. This variation was also observed within the same type of cultivar. This observation demonstrates that the cultivar and the grove location can significantly affect the chemical composition and bioactivity of virgin olive oil. Although this study supports the hypothesis that virgin olive oil phenolic fractions exert a beneficial effect on bone health, further studies assessing the in vivo accessibility of virgin olive oil phenolic compounds to osteoblast cells should be carried out.

In the tropical rain forests of southeastern Mexico, the use of Sterculia mexicana and Sterculia apetala seed oils for human and animal nutrition is common. However, the seeds contain cyclopropene fatty acids, whose consumption is related with beneficial as well as detrimental physiological effects. The aim of this study was to determine the fatty acid profile and the physicochemical characteristics of S. apetala seed oil and to evaluate the effect of roasting on both aspects. Cyclopropenoic fatty acids, sterculic acid and malvalic acid were identified in the natural and roasted seed oils. The major component in the seed oil was sterculic acid, as has been reported for Sterculia mexicana and Sterculia foetida. The roasting process modified some physicochemical properties and the fatty acid composition of the seed oil, particularly by decreasing its content of sterculic acid. To our knowledge, this is the first report on the fatty acid composition of S. apetala seed oil.
