The structures for the TRI$\mu$P facility have been completed and commissioned. At the facility radioactive nuclides are produced to study fundamental interactions and symmetries. An important feature is the possibility to trap radioactive atoms in order to obtain and hold a pure substrate-free sample for precision measurements. In the TRI$\mu$P facility a production target is followed by a magnetic separator, where radioactive isotopes are produced in inverse reaction kinematics. Separation up to 99.95% could be achieved for $^{21}$Na. A novel transmitting thermal ionizing device was developed to stop the energetic isotopes. Some 50% of stopped $^{21}$Na could be extracted and transported as low energy singly charged ions into a radio frequency quadrupole cooler and buncher with 35% transmission efficiency. The ions are transported lossless via a drift tube and a low energy electrostatic beam line into the experimental setup. Such ions can be neutralized on hot metal foils and the resulting atoms can be stored in a magneto-optical trap. Efficient production of short-lived radioactive isotopes in inverse reaction kinematics is an important technique for various applications. It is particularly interesting when the isotope of interest is only a few nucleons away from a stable isotope. In this article production via charge exchange and stripping reactions in combination with a magnetic separator is explored. The relation between the separator transmission efficiency, the production yield, and the choice of beam energy is discussed. At KVI the technical structures for the TRI mu P facility are nearly all in place. The aim of the project is to use radioactive ions to study fundamental interactions and symmetries. We will measure beta-recoil correlations in nuclear beta decay. There the V,A structure of the Weak interaction may be violated. The second line of research is the search for a permanent electric dipole moment in Ra, with a magnitude forbidden by the Standard Model. By trapping these radioactive nuclei in atom traps a pure sample that can be manipulated facilitates these searches. The TRI mu P facility consists of a production target and magnetic separator on the high energy side and a Radio-Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) cooler and buncher on the low energy side. An ion catcher stops the fast product nuclides and transport them into the RFQ cooler. New technological approaches were implemented for several of these devices.

The TRI mu P facility, under construction at KVI, requires the production and separation of short-lived and rare isotopes. Direct reactions, fragmentation and fusion-evaporation reactions in normal and inverse kinematics are foreseen to produce nuclides of interest with a variety of heavy-ion beams from the superconducting cyclotron AGOR. For this purpose, we have designed, constructed and commissioned a versatile magnetic separator that allows efficient injection into an ion catcher, i.e., gas-filled stopper/cooler or thermal ionizer, from which a low energy radioactive beam will be extracted. The separator performance was tested with the production and clean separation of Na-21 ions, where a beam purity of 99.5% could be achieved. At the Kernfysisch Versneller Instituut a new facility (TRImuP) is under development which aims, to investigate fundamental interactions using radioactive ions. A spectrum of radioactive isotopes will be produced in inverse-kinematics and fragmentation reactions using heavy-ion beams from the superconducting cyclotron AGOR. The reaction products will be separated from the primary beam in a dual-mode recoil and fragment separator. The beam of isotopes of interest will be transformed into a low-energy, high-quality, bunched beam and, after neutralization, stored in an atom trap. The emphasis will be put on studying the origin of parity violation via beta-v angular correlations and the search for permanent electric dipole moments of atoms and nuclei. A compact gantry (3 m radius) for proton therapy in which a so-called ''pencil" beam scans a 30 x 30 cm(2) surface, has been designed. The advantages of this gantry are its small size and the bet that no mechanical movements of magnets or patient couch are necessary to accomplish the two-dimensional scanning. In our design the pencil beam scanning is performed by two independently working scanning magnets. A compact system has been achieved by integration of the beam scanning into the ion optical design of the gantry. The large deflections of the pencil beam from the optic axis of the gentry have been treated correctly by the ion optics Code COSY. Some recently developed beam diagnostic devices for the beam lines of the AGOR cyclotron are reviewed. The range of applications is from low background nuclear physics experiments at “zero degree” to radiation therapy with proton beams. In particular a method to improve beam quality and the performance of some non-interceptive beam monitors are reported and a dosimetry application of a scintillating screen observed with a CCD camera will be described.

It aims for producing a spectrum of radioactive isotopes in direct, inverse kiematics fusion and evaporation or fragmentation reactions with heavy ion beams from the superconducting cyclotron AGOR. The products will be slowed down and trapped for accurate measurements of fundamental symmetries and interactions in physics. The scientific focus of the local KVI research groups includes precision studies of nuclear β-decays through β-neutrino (recoil nucleus) momentum correlations in weak decays and searches for permanent electric dipole moments in heavy atomic systems. This research programme offers a large potential for discovering new physics or to limit parameters in models beyond standard theory significantly. The scientific approach chosen in TRIμP can be regarded as complementary to such high energy physics. The TRIμP facility in Groningen will be open for users worldwide.

The Tri$\mu$P facility at KVI is dedicated to provide short lived radioactive isotopes at low kinetic energies to users. It comprised different cooling schemes for a variety of energy ranges, from GeV down to the neV scale. The isotopes are produced using beam of the AGOR cyclotron at KVI. They are separated from the primary beam by a magnetic separator. A crucial part of such a facility is the ability to stop and extract isotopes into a low energy beamline which guides them to the experiment. In particular we are investigating stopping in matter and buffer gases. After the extraction the isotopes can be stored in neutral atoms or ion traps for experiments. Our research includes precision studies of nuclear $\beta$-decay through $\beta$-$\nu$ momentum correlations as well as searches for permanent electric dipole moments in heavy atomic systems like radium. TRIμP, a new research facility to produce and trap rare and short-lived isotopes for high precision physics experiments is under design and construction at KVI. This facility makes use of the existing super-conducting cyclotron and the infrastructure of the laboratory. To be able to study a large variety of heavy ions a new dual function magnetic separator has been developed. Details of the separator and the status of the project will be presented.

They are then slowed down and finally trapped in ion or atomic traps in order to perform precision experiments with them. The facility will be open for use by the worldwide community. The present local research programme includes precision studies of nuclear β-decays through β-neutrino (recoil nucleus) momentum correlations in weak decays as well as searches for permanent electric dipole moments in heavy atomic systems. Such experiments offer a large potential for discovering new physics or to put sensitive limits on parameters in models beyond standard theory.

To create better vacuum conditions in the central region of our cyclotron a 20 K cryopump has been designed and built with a 100 K baffle optimized for a high conductance and a low radiation input. The transmission of the baffle is 0.5, the pump speed is 8000 1 s −1 for nitrogen. The design techniques and the results are described.
