Abstract

GANIL Facilities deliver ion beams from Proton to Uranium up to 95MeV/A. The Cyclotron facility combined with the SPIRAL1 facility provides Stable Ion Beams (SIB) since 1983 and Radioactive Ion Beams (RIB) since 2001 for Physics experiments. R&D of new stable and radioactive beams are continuously under progress matching physicist requirements. During the last ten years, the SPIRAL1 facility was upgraded to extend its capabilities to deliver RIBs of condensable elements. After a new one delivered in 2019, off-line R&D’s have been done on the Target Ions Source System and also on the Charge Breeder to improve efficiencies and achieve an operational and reliable facility. In parallel, the commissioning of the LINAC-SPIRAL2 facility started in 2019 with a proton beam production. In 2020, a 16 kW proton beam was delivered for the first time on the Neutron For Science physics area, and a 4 mA beam of 4He2+ was produced with the PhoenixV3 ECR ion source to mimic a deuteron beam. In this article, an overview of GANIL ion sources, beam properties and future developments are described.

Abstract

A new resistive oven dedicated to the production of metal ion beams using ECR ion sources has been developed at GANIL. It aims to produce beams such as 58Niq+, 50Tiq+, 50Vq+ or 238Uq+ with ECR4 ion source on cyclotrons injectors and with Phoenix V3 ion source on Spiral 2facility. Typical intensity about 1.2 1013 pps is requested for the Super Separator Spectrometer (S3). Evaporated atom fluxes and their angular distributions have been measured on a dedicated test bench thanks to a quartz microbalance. These investigations were carried out using three crucibles with various exit caps geometries for which the fluxes and angular distributions display distinct behaviors. Based on those results, crucible is designed to obtain a high flux of atoms overlapping the ECR plasma while minimizing the atoms losses on the ion source chamber.

Abstract

A low temperature oven has been developed to produce calcium beam with Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Source (ECRIS). The atom flux from the oven has been studied experimentally as a function of the temperature and the angle of emission by means of a quartz microbalance. The absolute flux measurement permitted to derive Antoine's coefficient for the calcium sample used : A=8.98$\pm$ 0.07 and B=7787$\pm$ 110 in standard unit. The angular FWHM of the atom flux distribution is found to be 53.7{\deg}$\pm$7.3 at 848K, temperature at which the gas behaviour is non collisional. The atom flux hysteresis observed experimentally in several laboratories is explained as follows: at first calcium heating, the evaporation comes from the sample only, resulting in a small evaporation rate. once a full calcium layer has formed on the crucible refractory wall, the calcium evaporation surface includes the crucible's enhancing dramatically the evaporation rate for a given temperature. A Monte-Carlo code, developed to reproduce and investigate the oven behaviour as a function of temperature is presented. A discussion on the gas regime in the oven is proposed as a function of its temperature. A fair agreement between experiment and simulation is found., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures

Abstract

International audience; The 1+/n+ method, based on an ECRIS charge breeder (CB) originally developed at the LPSC laboratory, is now implemented at GANIL for the production of Radioactive Ion Beams (RIBs). Prior to its installation in the middle of the low energy beam line of the SPIRAL1 facility, the 1+/n+ system CB has been modified based on the experiments performed on the CARIBU Facility at Argone National Laboratory. Later, it has been tested at the 1+/n+ LPSC test bench to validate its operation performances. Charge breeding efficiencies as well as charge breeding times have been measured for noble gases and alkali elements. The commissioning phase started at GANIL in the second half-year of 2017. It consisted of a stepwise process to test the upgrade of the SPIRAL1 facility from simple validation [operation of Charge Breeder (CB) as a stand-alone source] up to the production of the first 1+/n+ RIB. Thus, this year, a 38mK/38K RIB has been successfully delivered to a physics experiment over a period of 1 week. The yields on the physics target were in the range of ∼2–4 × 106 pps at 9 MeV/u. The target ion source system (TISS) was made of a FEBIAD ion source connected to a hot graphite target. This is the first time a RIB is accelerated with a cyclotron with the 1+/n+ method. Moreover, a production test with the FEBIAD TISS has confirmed the yields measured previously, which validates the extension of the GANIL/SPIRAL1 catalog for a number of isotopes. In parallel, R&D is being performed on new TISSs (e.g., a fast release one, using surface ionization source). Targets are also a subject of ongoing R&D for yield and release time optimization. This contribution will present the new acceleration scheme of the SPIRAL1 facility, which largely extends the palette of RIBs available for nuclear physicists. It will be compared to the ones used at similar ISOL facilities. This facility is more than a simple ISOL facility, and an overview of the new opportunities offered by the upgraded installation will be also discussed.

Abstract

GANIL/SPIRAL facility/FEBIAD; International audience; The SPIRAL facility at GANIL is being upgraded with a new FEBIAD ion source in order to extend its productioncapabilities to condensable elements. The coupling of such an ion source with the present GANILtarget was recently tested online at SPIRAL at nominal power (1200 W). The results are promising as thecalculated yields are in the range of those extrapolated from previous measurements at lower power andsometimes higher. This experiment and its results are presented.

Abstract

International audience; SPIRAL1 facility is currently under transformation (Dubois) [1] in order to extend the range of radioactive ion beam offered to users. It will be able to host a larger variety of target ion source systems by the end of 2016, needed to fulfil the production requirements related to the chemical variety of the isotopes demanded by the physicists. The extent of the transformation is limited by the frame of the safety regulation and by the existing facility. Several combinations of mono-charged or multi-charged ECR, FEBIAD and surface ionization sources with new target materials are becoming possible. Some of these combinations are already under test. A comparison between expected SPIRAL1 performances and results obtained in other facilities is presented with the aim of leading our next developments.

Abstract

Since 2001, the SPIRAL 1 facility has been one of the pioneering facilities in ISOL techniques for reaccelerating radioactive ion beams: the fragmentation of the heavy ion beams of GANIL on graphite targets and subsequent ionization in the Nanogan ECR ion source has permitted to deliver beams of gaseous elements (He, N, O, F, Ne, Ar, Kr) to numerous experiments. Thanks to the CIME cyclotron, energies up to 20 AMeV could be obtained. In 2014, the facility was stopped to undertake a major upgrade, with the aim to extend the production capabilities of SPIRAL 1 to a number of new elements. This upgrade, which is presently under commissioning, consists in the integration of an ECR booster in the SPIRAL 1 beam line to charge breed the beam of different 1+ sources. A FEBIAD source (the so-called VADIS from ISOLDE) was chosen to be the future workhorse for producing many metallic ion beams. The charge breeder is an upgraded version of the Phoenix booster which was previously tested in ISOLDE. The performances of the aforementioned ingredients of the upgrade (targets, 1+ source and charge breeder) have been and are still being optimized in the frame of different European projects (EMILIE, ENSAR and ENSAR2). The upgraded SPIRAL 1 facility will provide soon its first new beams for physics and further beam development are undertaken to prepare for the next AGATA campaign. Abstract

The SPIRAL1 (Systeme de Production d’Ions Radioactifs Acceleres en Ligne) facility at GANIL (Grand Accelerateur National d’Ions Lourds) is developing new techniques to access nuclei in the neutron-deficient isotope region far from the stability-valley, with Z ranging from 30 to 60. The availability of different primary beams, ranging from carbon to uranium with energies up to 95 MeV/A, gives an opportunity to produce a large variety of radioactive ion beams. The production of neutron-deficient short-lived alkalis by fusion-evaporation reactions is the focus of this work. A simple and compact target ion source system (TISS) is designed to produce isotopes of 74Rb ( τ 1 / 2 = 64.8 ms) and 114Cs ( τ 1 / 2 = 570 ms). The efficiencies of the different processes involved in the production are evaluated. Radioactive recoils are produced through the interaction of heavy-ion beams, respectively 20Ne beam and 58Ni beam at an intensity of 1013 and 1012 pps, with a thin 58Ni target. High atom-to-ion transformation (ATI) efficiency should be obtained above 70% and 90% for 74Rb and 114Cs nuclei respectively. The expected intensities of the RIBs are estimated to be around 104 pps at the exit of the TISS.

Abstract

International audience; SPIRAL1 Upgrade hardware is now almost completed. The FEBIAD 1+ source has been tested for the production of new radioactive isotopes, the SPIRAL1 Charge Breeder (SP1 CB) is in place reproducing nearly the charge breeding efficiencies measured at LPSC laboratory and the infrastructure is operational. The commissioning phase started in the first semester of 2017. It has consisted of a stepwise process to test the upgrade of the SPIRAL1 facility from simple validation (operation of SP1 CB as a stand-alone source) up to the production of the first 1+/N+ Radioactive Ion Beam (RIB) with the 37K9+ ion. This contribution will summarize the different steps completed successfully and especially the measurements performed to validate each of the commissioning stages. These include e.g. ionization efficiency measurements for CB; beam line optics for 1+/N+ and charge breeding tuning. The remaining effort required to ensure the reliability of the complete system for routine RIB operation is also presented. A section will be dedicated to the coupling of SP1 CB to the CIME cyclotron, leading to the delivery of stable beams at unprecedented energies at GANIL.

Abstract

International audience; The 1+/n+ method, originally developed at the Laboratoire de Physique Subatomique & Cosmology (LPSC) laboratory, is implemented at GANIL for the production of radioactive ion beams as well as for studying the production of intense stable metallic beams. Regarding radioactive ion beam production, the ECRIS type Phoenix charge breeder of the Système de Production d’Ions Radioactifs Accélérés en Ligne (SPIRAL1) has been installed in the midst of the SPIRAL1 Low Energy Beam Transport (LEBT). First beam of 40Arn+ was extracted during May 2017 demonstrating a distribution peaked on the 9+ charge state with 16% in particle of ionization efficiency. Concerning stable ion beam production, the Grenoble Test Source (GTS) ECR ion source, providing stable ion beam for the Accélérateur pour les Recherches Interdisciplinaires avec les Ions de Basse Energie (ARIBE) facility, is under modification to include a charge breeding capability to study a new injection process for producing high intensity metallic beams.

Abstract

International audience; The upgrade of the Système de Production d’Ions Radioactifs Accélérés en Ligne (SPIRAL1) facility will deliver its new Radioactive Ion Beams (RIB) by summer 2017. The goal of the upgrade is an improvement of the performances of the installation in terms of isotopes species and ion charge states [1]. Ion beams are produced using the Isotope Separator On Line Method, consisting in an association of a primary beam of stable ions, a hot target and an ion source. The primary beam impinges on the material of the target. Radioactive isotopes are produced by nuclear reactions and propagate up to the source, where they are ionized and accelerated to create a RIB. One advantage of SPIRAL1 driver is the variety of its available primary beams, from carbon to uranium with energies up to 95 MeV/A. Within the SPIRAL1 upgrade, they will be combined with targets made of a large choice of materials, extending in this way the number of possible nuclear reactions (fusion-evaporation, transfer, fragmentation) for producing a wider range of isotopes, up to regions of the nuclide chart still scarcely explored. Depending on the reaction process, on the collision energy and on the primary beam power, thin and thick targets are used. As their functions can be different, their design must cope with specific constraints which will be described. After a presentation of the goals of present and future SPIRAL1 Target Ion Source System, the main target features, studies and designs under progress are presented.

Laser ion sources are in use extensively to ionize the nuclear reaction products at many on-line radioactive ion beam facilities. They have proven to be reliable and to combine good production efficiencies with chemical selectivity. A Laser ion source is currently under development for the SPIRAL2 project at GANIL. A status update of this project called GISELE is presented.

ThuPE31; International audience; In the framework of the SPIRAL1 upgrade under progress at the GANIL lab, the charge breederbased on a LPSC Phoenix ECRIS, first tested at ISOLDE has been modified to benefit of thelast enhancements of this device from the 1+/n+ community. The modifications mainly concernthe 1+ optics, vacuum techniques, and the RF—buffer gas injection into the charge breeder. Priorto its installation in the midst of the low energy beam line of the SPIRAL1 facility, it has beendecided to qualify its performances and several operation modes at the test bench of LPSC lab. Thiscontribution shall present preliminary results of experiments conducted at LPSC concerning the 1+to n+ conversion efficiencies for noble gases as well as for alkali elements and the correspondingtransformation times.

Abstract

In the framework of the EURISOL project, the production of neutron-rich isotopes of rubidium and cesium has been studied. The intensities of mass-separated beams of rubidium and cesium isotopes generated from a thick 238 UC x target connected to a surface ionizer have been measured. The release properties of 140 Cs and 91 Rb have been investigated. The obtained results allowed us to determine the relative fission yields of rubidium and cesium isotopes with high accuracy.

Abstract

The γ-ray de-excitations following the β-decay of 83Ga and the β-n decay of 84Ga have been studied. The radioactive species were produced using the PARRNe on-line mass-separator installed at the IPN Orsay Tandem accelerator. Two γ-lines were attributed to 83Ge with the aid of β-γ and γ-γ coincidences. The Z identification of the γ-lines was provided by time analysis of a buid-up/decay cycle. The excited levels of 83Ge can be explained by the coupling of the single neutron state ν2d 5/2 to the first 2+ excitation of the 82Ge core.

Abstract

The PARRNe (Production d'Atomes Radioactifs Riches en Neutrons) experimental program has been part of the recent R&D efforts for the design of the SPIRAL2 project at GANIL. The PARRNe2 set-up installed at IPNOrsay allows the use of the Tandem as a deuteron driver in order to produce mass separated fission fragment beams. The measured fission fragment yields proved to be high enough to undertake a series of beta-decay experiments dedicated at studying the structure of proton-deficient nuclei close to N=50. We report here on two such experiments, the first being dedicated at the observation of the decay of 83Ga->83Ge (Z=32, N=51), 84Ga->84Ge (Z=32, N=52) and the second of the decay of 81Zn->81Ga (Z=31, N=50) allowing for the fist time the identification of a few gamma lines with transitions in the daughter nuclei thus providing the material for a preliminary glimpse of their structure.

The PARRNe facility has been used to produce neutron-rich isotopes 83,84Gaby the ISOL method. Their decay has been studied, and β-γ coincidence and γ-γ coincidence data were collected as a function of time. The first two excited levels in 83Ge and the first excited level in 84Ge have been measured for the first time.

Abstract

In the framework of the PARRNe program (Production d’Atomes Radioactifs Riches en Neutrons) of IPN Orsay, various techniques are currently used to characterize the release properties of elements of interest from a UCX target. On-line studies have been carried out with two plasma ion sources: a Nier–Bernas and a hot plasma ISOLDE-type (the ISOLDE collaboration kindly supplied us a MK5 ion source for these studies). In parallel, the analysis of the chemical and structure properties of some UCX samples as function of heating conditions has been carried out. Such data are essential to determine optimal conditions for the production of isotopes by the isotope separator on-line (ISOL) technique. First results are presented here for Kr and Ag. Investigations for other kinds of fission targets are planned.

Abstract

In order to probe neutron rich radioactive noble gases produced by photo-fission, a PARRNe-1 experiment (Production d’Atomes Radioactifs Riches en Neutrons) has been carried out at CERN. The incident electron beam of 50 MeV was delivered by the LIL machine: LEP Injector Linac. The experiment allowed us to compare under the same conditions two production methods of radioactive noble gases: fission induced by fast neutrons and photo-fission. The obtained results show that the use of the electrons is a promising mode to get intense neutron rich ion beams. After the success of this photo-fission experiment, a conceptual design for the installation at IPN Orsay of a 50 MeV electron accelerator close to the PARRNe-2 device has been worked out: ALTO Project. This work has started within a collaboration between IPNO, LAL (Laboratoire de l’Accelerateur Lineaire) and CERN groups.

Abstract

The latest results of the research and development program Production d'Atomes Radioactifs Riches en Neutrons (PARRNe) at Institut de Physique Nucleaire (IPN) Orsay are presented. The production of neutron rich isotopes by fast neutron induced fission in a liquid depleted uranium target was measured. A comparison of the production rates with a uranium carbide (UCx) target is given.

Abstract

An efficient and reliable transport system for fast-neutron irradiations has been built at the Physics Department, Jyvaskyla, Finland. It is constructed from commercial bicycle components and is driven by a computer-controlled stepping motor. It can be operated in single or cyclic mode. The neutron irradiated targets are moved within 1.2 s (full stop to full stop) to a well-shielded position 3 m away where they can be removed or directly investigated by γ spectroscopy. The system has been built with the aim to experimentally verify the calculated production rates of neutron-rich nuclei in the SPIRAL2 uranium target. However, the facility can be used for various kinds of fast-neutron irradiations, with a neutron spectrum up to 60 MeV produced by stopping a deuteron beam of several μ A in a thick target. Examples of applications are activation and integral cross-section measurements, evaluation of damages in materials and biological cells.

Abstract

International audience; The GANIL facility (Caen, France) is dedicated to the acceleration of heavy ion beams including radioactive beams produced by the Isotope Separation On-Line (ISOL) method at the SPIRAL1 facility. To extend the range of radioactive ion beams available at GANIL, using the ISOL method two projects are underway: SPIRAL1 upgrade and the construction of SPIRAL2. For SPIRAL1, a new target ion source system (TISS) using the VADIS FEBIAD ion source coupled to the SPIRAL1 carbon target will be tested on-line by the end of 2013 and installed in the cave of SPIRAL1 for operation in 2015. The SPIRAL2 project is under construction and is being design for using different production methods as fission, fusion or spallation reactions to cover a large area of the chart of nuclei. It will produce among others neutron rich beams obtained by the fission of uranium induced by fast neutrons. The production target made from uranium carbide and heated at 2000 °C will be associated with several types of ion sources. Developments currently in progress at GANIL for each of these projects are presented.

Abstract

The production of radioactive ions using the Isotope Separation On-Line method gives rise, in most cases, to singly charged ions. In order to perform experiments with postaccelerated radioactive ion beams, these ions have to be multicharged. We describe here a new compact design for a charge breeder that will be coupled to the production target of SPIRAL1 at GANIL. We present recent results obtained offline with stable alkali ions (Na, K, Rb, and Cs) on the SIRa test bench. Particularly, 1(+) to N(+) conversion efficiencies and conversion times are presented. Several points have been identified for the improvements of the present performances.

Abstract

International audience; The SPIRAL2 project, currently under construction at GANIL, will include an isotope separator on line based facility for the production and acceleration of radioactive ion beams. A superconducting linear accelerator will accelerate 5 mA deuterons up to 40 MeV and 1 mA heavy ions up to 14.5 MeV/u. These primary beams will be used to bombard both thick and thin targets. We are investigating three different techniques to produce the radioactive ion beams: (1) the neutron induced fission of uranium carbide, (2) the direct interaction of deuterons in a uranium carbide target, and (3) the interaction of a heavy ion beam with a target. All these production systems will be coupled to an ion source. Four kinds of ion sources are foreseen for the ionization of the radioactive atoms: an electron cyclotron resonance ion source, a surface ionization ion source, a forced electron beam induced arc discharge ion source, and a laser ion source depending on the characteristics of the desired radioactive ion beam in terms of intensity, efficiency, purity, etc. A presentation of the SPIRAL2 project and of the different production systems is given.

Abstract

International audience; Production of on-line mass separated neutron-rich isotopes using fission induced by 1 GeV protons on high-density uranium targets (typically 11 g/cm3) has been investigated for several years at the IRIS facility. Here we review some of the achievements during the years up to 2006 and the perspectives. In particular, we present a comparison of yields in p and n-induced fission, enhancements by secondary neutrons, a comparison with lower-density targets used at PARRNe and ISOLDE for Rb and Cs isotopes and preliminary results obtained with a new UC target material.

Abstract

International audience; The capacity of uranium carbide target materials of different structure and density for production of neutron-rich and heavy neutron-deficient nuclides have been investigated. The yields of Cs and Fr produced by a 1 GeV proton beam of the PNPI synchrocyclotron and release properties of different targets have been measured. Yields and release efficiencies of Cs and Fr produced from a high density UC target material and from low density UCx prepared by the ISOLDE method at IRIS in the collaboration with PARRNe group from Orsay are compared. The yields from ISOLDE original target are presented for comparison as well.

Abstract

The branching of the ${2}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{0}^{+}$ transition in $^{92}\mathrm{Sr}$ has been measured to 0.032(4) per $^{92}\mathrm{Rb}$ decay. It confirms an earlier measurement which was discarded in nuclear data evaluations because of a contradiction with accepted lower log $\mathit{ft}$ limits. The conflict could be solved assuming that close to half of the decay intensity, mostly as high-energy ground-state transitions, is missing in the decay scheme.

New levels were attributed to $^{81}\_{31}$Ga$\_{50}$ and $^{83}\_{32}$Ge$\_{51}$ which were fed by the $\beta$-decay of their respective mother nuclei $^{81}\_{30}$Zn$\_{51}$ and $^{83}\_{31}$Ga$\_{52}$ produced by fission at the "PARRNe" ISOL set-up installed at the Tandem accelerator of the Institut de Physique Nucl\'eaire, Orsay. NESTER ACC; The release properties of a UCx thick target associated with a hot plasma ion source have been studied. Measurements have been performed for various elements: Kr, Ag, Sn, I and Xe. The analysis is made assuming pure diffusion or pure effusion as the release processes. The results obtained are compared to the data available in the literature.

Abstract

A number of on-line and off-line tests have been performed at the IRIS (investigation of radioactive isotopes at synchrocyclotron) facility in order to develop uranium carbide targets with a high density (11 g/cm3) for the on-line production of neutron-rich isotopes by fission of 238U. A 1 GeV proton beam was used to bombard two kinds of targets held at temperatures in the range of 1900–2100 °C. The first one was a target-ion source assembly slightly modified to withstand 3 months of continuous heating at a temperature of about 2050 °C. The second unit was of a new kind, where ionisation takes place in the target volume itself. A comparison of the on-line isotopic yields before and after heating for 3 months is here reported. The yields and release times of Rb, Cs and In are compared with the ones obtained from a standard reference target, as measured in previous experiments.

Abstract

A series of on-line mass separation experiments have been performed at the IRIS facility to measure the yield and release of Rb and Cs neutron-rich isotopes produced by fission reaction of 238U. A 1 GeV proton beam was used to bombard uranium carbide targets with the densities of 11 g/cm3 and 1.5 g/cm3 held at temperatures in the range (2000-2230) °C. The release curves of Rb and Cs long-lived isotopes were measured from both kinds of targets. The overall production efficiency was determined making use of experimentally measured cross-sections of that isotope production. Comparison of the experimental yields of Rb and Cs isotopes with the calculated ones after corrections for losses due to finite release times suggests that the diffusion is the dominating process reducing the efficiency for short-lived isotopes. When normalized to the same thickness, an enhancement for the high-density rod target of the measured isotope yields is observed when going far from stability. This is possibly explained by the reactions induced by secondary neutrons. A significant odd-even effect with higher yields of Cs even neutron isotopes has been observed, confirming a similar effect obtained in earlier experiments.

Abstract

Production of radioactive ions has started at GANIL on the SPIRAL facility since 2001 and numerous multicharged radioactive ion beams have been delivered for high energy nuclear experiments. This article makes an overview of the different beams that have been produced. In the mean time, an important R and D research program is continued in oder to produce new species of radioactive elements. A new concept of multicharged radioactive production that couples a monocharged ion source, based on the monolithe concept, to an ecr ion source like nanogan3 is under developments and is described The development of monocharged ion sources with high efficiencies is also motivated by a new big project that is under studies at GANIL : the SPIRAL 2 Project. The goal of this project consists in extending the disponible radioactive ion beams to very heavy elements created with a new method of production : while the spiral 1 facility uses the projectile fragmentation for radioactive nuclei production, the spiral 2 project is based on the fission of a Uranium carbide target induced by a neutron flow created by a high intensity deuton beam. Radioactive ion beam intensities have been measured at ISOL (isotope separation on-line) facilities from many different targets, but only rarely these intensities are converted into production cross-sections. Here we discuss the method and possible problems in this conversion at the examples of Kr and Xe produced by 1.4 GeV-proton-induced fission of 238U at ISOLDE and Rb and Cs produced by approx. 10 MeV-neutron-induced fission of 238U at PARRNe.

Abstract

A source of neutron rich ions can be conceived through the photo-fission process. An exploratory study of such a source is realized. A survey of the radiative electron energy loss theory is reported in order to estimate numerically the bremsstrahlung production of thick targets. The resulted bremsstrahlung angular and energy theoretical distributions delivered from W and UCx thick converters are presented and compared with previous results. Some quantities as the number of fission events produced in the fissionable source and the energy loss in the converters are also reported as function of the geometry of the combination and the incident electron energy. An attempt of comparison with experimental data shows a quantitative agreement. This study is focussed on initial kinetic energies of the electron beam included in the range 30–60 MeV, suitable for the production of large radiative γ-ray yields able to induce the 238 U fission through the giant dipole resonance. A confrontation with the number of fission events produced in the frame of the fast neutron induced fission method indicates that the photo-fission can be a competitive concept.

Abstract

Yields of neutron-rich isotopes produced by fast neutron induced fission of 238 U were measured at the ISOL set-up Production dAtomes Radioactifs Riches en Neutrons. A surface ion source was used to ionize selectively elements with low ionization potentials. In order to observe also the most n-rich isotopes, the identification was achieved by a combined measurement of b- and c-rays and b-delayed neutrons. The flux of fast neutrons inducing fission was generated by a 1 lA beam of 26 MeV deuterons stopped in a graphite converter. The target was a standard ISOLDE type 238 UC

International audience; Production efficiencies of radioactive oxygen and nitrogen beams for the SPIRAL targetsourcesystem, measured at GANIL on the SIRa test bench, are presented. Abstract

La photofission est un processus a l'etude actuellement pour des applications dans les domaines de la production d'isotopes riches en neutrons et des faisceaux d'ions radioactifs. La radioprotection associee fait egalement l'objet d'une etude. Un compte rendu de la theorie concernant la perte d'energie des electrons est reporte en vue d'estimer numeriquement le rayonnement de freinage emis dans des cibles epaisses. Les distributions angulaires et en energies du rayonnement de freinage theorique sont presentees et comparees avec des resultats anterieurs. Cette etude est focalisee sur des faisceaux d'electrons d'energies comprises entre 30 et 60 MeV, qui permettent de grandes productions de photons capables d'induire la fission de U. Le terme source pour 50 MeV electrons incidents est reporte en vue d'applications de radioprotection.

Abstract

A PARRNe 1 experiment (Production d'Atomes Radioactifs Riches en Neutrons) aimed at the production of neutron-rich radioactive noble gases produced by photofission has been performed at CERN. The LEP Pre-Injector (LPI) has been used to deliver a 50 MeV electron beam. The results obtained show clearly that the use of an electron beam to produce neutron-rich fission fragments for futur RNB facilities is an option that should not be neglected.

Abstract

The PARRNe (Production d’Atomes Radioactifs Riches Neutrons) R&D program is dedicated to the determination of the best conditions for the production of neutron-rich beam in prospect of the SPIRAL2 project. A complete description of this program, its subdivisions (PARRNe 0, 1 and 2 sub-programs) and the different experimental setup involved can be found in [1,2]. An experiment using the “PARRNE 1” procedure aimed at measuring on-line production of rare gases was performed at CERN.

Abstract

Simulations of the power deposition and target temperature distributions in the SPIRAL isotope separation on-line (ISOL) target are presented. These simulations consider different heavy-ion beams with intensities corresponding to 2 and 6 kW on carbon targets for use in radioactive ion production. A new solution, which corresponds to the splitting of the production target into two parts, where the first is cooled and the second is heated, allows keeping the overall size of the target ensemble relatively small. An extrapolation of the considered target geometry to primary beam intensities up to 1 MW is also presented.

Abstract

International audience; We present the on-line production system and tests for the Phase-I of SPIRAL/GANIL (Radioactive Ion Production System with Acceleration on-Line) where exotic multicharged noble gas ion beams have been obtained with the ECRIS (Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Source) NANOGAN-III. A new ECRIS (MONO1000) for monocharged radioactive ions is also presented, together with the diffusion properties of different graphite targets for He and Ar isotopes.
