Abstract

In the UK, Coastal Flood Forecasting procedures rely on forecasts of still water level generated by combining predicted tide and storm surge components. The tide component of this system is often termed the ‘astronomic tide’. However, the predicted tide is derived from a harmonic analysis of the full water level time-series (tide plus surge) observed at tide gauges – typically from the last 19 years. Therefore, the tidal predictions will include radiational tides particularly those that occur with tidal frequencies such as S2 and Sa.We have previously shown that the current forecasting system double-counts several cm of tides from these sources, since the radiational tides are also generated by the surge model. Now we investigate further, to see whether removing a modelled surge prior to tidal analysis and prediction can improve total water level forecasting., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

Abstract

We present a study of quasar selection using the DES supernova fields. We used a quasar catalog from an overlapping portion of the SDSS Stripe 82 region to quantify the completeness and efficiency of selection methods involving color, probabilistic modeling, variability, and combinations of color/probabilistic modeling with variability. We only considered objects that appear as point sources in the DES images. We examine color selection methods based on the WISE mid-IR W1-W2 color, a mixture of WISE and DES colors (g-i and i-W1) and a mixture of VHS and DES colors (g-i and i-K). For probabilistic quasar selection, we used XDQSOz, an algorithm that employs an empirical multi-wavelength flux model of quasars to assign quasar probabilities. Our variability selection uses the multi-band chi2-probability that sources are constant in the DES Year 1 griz-band light curves. The completeness and efficiency are calculated relative to an underlying sample of point sources that are detected in the required selection bands and pass our data quality and photometric error cuts. We conduct our analyses at two magnitude limits, i85% for both i-band magnitude limits and efficiencies of >80% to the bright limit and >60% to the faint limit; however, the giW1 and giW1+variability methods give the highest quasar surface densities. The XDQSOz method and combinations of W1W2/giW1/XDQSOz with variability are among the better selection methods when both high completeness and high efficiency are desired. We also present the OzDES Quasar Catalog of 1,263 spectroscopically-confirmed quasars taken by the OzDES survey. The catalog includes quasars with redshifts up to z~4 and brighter than i=22 mag, although the catalog is not complete up this magnitude limit., 16 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables; Submitted to ApJ. Abstract

Although the number of people in nursing homes has risen substantially in recent years, the shift of responsibility into general practice has rarely been accompanied by extra resources. These patients may be associated with a higher general practitioner (GP) workload than others of similar age and sex.To assess the GP workload associated with nursing home residents and its associated costs.All nursing home residents aged over 65 years and registered with nine Nottinghamshire practices during one year were matched with patients living in the community for general practice, age, and sex. Data were collected retrospectively for both groups on key workload measures. Costs for the workload measures were calculated using published estimates.Data were collected for 270 pairs of patients. Nursing home patients had more face-to-face contacts in normal surgery hours, telephone calls, and out-of-hours visits. The mean workload cost per month of a nursing home patient (assuming that one patient was seen per visit) was estimated to be 18.21 Pounds (10.49 Pounds higher than the cost of controls). A sensitivity analysis demonstrated that potential savings in visiting costs associated with increasing the numbers of patients seen per visit were 27% for one extra patient seen per visit and 44% for four extra patients.Nursing home residents were associated with higher workload for GPs than other patients of the same age and sex living in the community. Our costings provide a basis for negotiating suitable reimbursement of GPs for their additional work.
