Abstract

With the current focus on the characteristics and effective operation of divertor configurations in fusion plasma research, a reassessment of the atomic database available for divertor modeling and diagnosis is taking place. The quest for ideal materials for divertor targets and for impurities that can be used to promote optimum working conditions has exposed some gaps in the database. In addition, for the finer spectroscopic diagnostic and modeling tools now being promoted, existing data may be organized inappropriately or may be at unsuitable precisions. In this paper, some examples that emphasize electron collisions and collisions with neutrals, are used to demonstrate these points. Then, a case study is presented, based on experience at SET Joint Undertaking, of tailoring atomic data and their manipulation for experiment support.

Abstract

The electron temperature (Te) and electron density (ne) are important parameters for characterizing the plasma status in the Scrape-Off-Layer (SOL) and the divertor of magnetically confined fusion devices and investigating its physical and chemical properties in different operating conditions [1]. These parameters are usually derived locally using Langmuir Probes (LP), which are intrusive techniques. Optical diagnostics, such as Optical Emission Spectroscopy (OES), utilizing plasma radiation, offer a non-invasive complementary technique providing extremely powerful insights when supported by an accurate atomic modelling [2, 3]. This work focuses on the implementation of the OES technique to analyze an argon plasma in the linear device GyM and to derive an estimate of the line-of-sight averaged Te and ne.

Abstract

JT-60SA is a fusion experiment designed to support the operation of ITER and to investigate how best to optimize the operation of future fusion power plants. For the safe operation of the device, a survey spectrometer observing the plasma from an equatorial port is foreseen to monitor light impurities such as carbon and oxygen, metal impurities and extrinsic impurities injected ad hoc to mitigate the power exhaust problem. A second survey spectrometer, to be designed and constructed within the presented work, positioned on an upper port with a vertical line of sight, will complement the monitoring activity of the first system by measuring the relative contribution of the various impurities to the radiation losses in the divertor region and by studying the physics of the plasma-divertor detachment mechanism.It is aimed at up to 1 ms time resolution, 20-130 nm wavelength range and, when in imaging mode, a space resolution of about 5 cm. This contribution will highlight the details of the spectrometer-divertor plasma optical coupling, designed in order to optimize the inspection of the divertor region, the two dimensional detector to be used and the alignment procedure. The zero order of the spectrometer is planned to be fed into a visible spectrometer via fiber optics for the absolute calibration of the VUV spectrometer and also to provide monitoring of high ntransitions of various C or Ne ionization states.The spectrometer, jointly designed by an EU-Japan team, will be procured byEurofusion and installed on JT60-SAin late 2022.

Abstract

WEST (Tungsten Environment in Steady-State Tokamak) will be operating by the end of 2016 as a test bed for the ITER divertor components in long pulse operation. In this context, radiative cooling of highly ionized impurities like tungsten (W) sputtered from Plasma Facing Components (PFC) into the plasma core is a critical issue since even small impurity concentrations below 10-4 degrade significantly plasma performances and can lead to radiative collapse. In the plasma core, tungsten emission is dominant in the Soft X-ray (SXR) range 0.1 keV -- 15 keV with complex contributions from line transition, radiative recombination and Bremsstrahlung emission.This paper presents the recent development of a synthetic SXR diagnostic using GEM (Gas Electron Multiplier) detectors. This diagnostic will be used on WEST for W transport studies and will be equipped with two new GEM based poloidal cameras allowing 2D tomographic reconstructions with spectral resolution in energy bands. Thus once GEM response to plasma emissivity is characterized thanks to synthetic diagnostic, it offers new possibilities to disentangle the different SXR contributions in harsh fusion environments like e.g. WEST or ITER with respect to conventional semiconductor diodes working in current mode. Emitted SXR spectrum from the plasma is modelled thanks to ADAS database from given WEST scenario. The synthetic diagnostic includes Lines of Sight (LoS) etendues of the two cameras as well as probability of photoabsorption through filters, photoionization in the detection gas mixture (Ar-CO2), and transport of electron avalanches in the gas through GEM foils as computed with Magboltz.
