1. Size discrimination of transient signals

Abstract

The importance of spectral cues in size discrimination of transient signals was investigated, and a model for this ability, tAIM, was created based on the biological principles of human hearing. A psychophysics experiment involving 40 participants found that the most important cue for size discrimination of transient signals, created by striking different sizes of polystyrene spheres, was similar to that of speakers listening to vowels – the relative positions of the resonances between comparison signals. It was found possible to scale the sphere signals in order to confuse listeners into believing the signal source was a different size, but two methods of scaling signals in order to sound the same size as another proved inconclusive, suggesting the possibility that transient signals cannot be scaled in a linear fashion as has been shown possible for vowels. Filtering the signals in a number of different ways found that the most important cue in size discrimination of transient signals is the difference between the most prominent resonances available in the spectra of the comparison signals. A model of the auditory system using the dynamic compressive Gammachirp filterbank, and based on the well-known AIM, was created to produce auditory images of transient signals that could be normalised for size. Transient-AIM, or tAIM used the Mellin transform to produce images that showed size normalisation was possible due to the spectral envelope similarities across the sizes of the spheres. tAIM was extended to carry out size discrimination of the spheres using the information contained within the Mellin images. There was a systematic association between Mellin phase and size of objects of various shapes, which suggests that tAIM is able to infer object size from sound recordings of objects being struck.

2. Teachers' perceptions of the impact of the grinds culture: A focus on post-primary mathematics

Abstract

Grinds can be defined as education outside the formal schooling system where a tutor teaches a particular subject(s) in exchange for a financial gain. Their provision has become a widespread phenomenon internationally in recent years, no more so than for the subject of mathematics. In this paper we sought to investigate mathematics teachers’ perceptions of the impact of the grinds culture in the subject at post-primary level in Ireland. The data was gathered using an online survey designed by the authors and circulated to post-primary mathematics teachers in November 2020. The findings from responding teachers (n = 305) revealed mixed opinions, with both positive and negative impacts identified. Many teachers acknowledged the benefits of one-to-one support that grinds can provide and the resulting increase in students’ confidence in the subject. However, teachers also noted that for some students’, grinds can be a substitute for a lack of motivation and work ethic and their provision can often lead to disengagement in class.

3. Access to and engagement with mathematics across the transition from primary to post-primary school: Teacher knowledge and perceptions

Abstract

Research surrounding the transition has frequently cited the quality of students’ interactionwith teachers as having a significant association with engagement in mathematics. Thus in this cross-border study we employed a questionnaire with the aim of capturing teachers’ knowledge and perceptions that underpin their instructional practices and ultimately impact on student achievement. A representative sample of 428 primary and 248 post-primary mathematics teachers from across both jurisdictions responded. The findings show that most primary teachers consider mathematics easier than other subjects to teach with only around 10% of post-primary teachers perceiving this to be the case. With the exception of post-primary teachers in Northern Ireland, perceived levels of content knowledge of the preceding/ensuing stage are low. All teachers reported a high sense of confidence in relation to teaching all strands across the mathematics curriculum and answering students’ questions in class. Primary teachers were more likely to consider students well prepared in all strands of the curriculum upon exiting primary school than post-primary teachers. This disagreement was more pronounced when considering Algebra than any other strand. In this paper, we consider how these findings shape instructional practice and thus influence students access to and engagement with mathematics.

Abstract

There is a large body of research which highlights the importance of students studying mathematics at an advanced level and many Governments and policy makers worldwide are constantly looking at ways to increase the uptake of advanced mathematics. In Ireland, the Bonus Points Initiative was introduced in 2011 in an attempt to increase the number of Senior Cycle students opting to study higher level mathematics and to improve Irish students’ mathematical capabilities. Despite a rise in the number of students studying higher level mathematics at this time very little research has been conducted to determine if it was the initiative, the new curriculum or other factors that led to the surge in uptake. This study investigates Irish students’ reasons for participating in higher level mathematics and seeks to determine if the reasons for studying higher level mathematics differs across gender. The findings suggest that the points system currently in place in Ireland is the main driving factor behind students’ participation in higher level mathematics while parents are very influential actors in the decision-making process also. Differences in the reasons offered by males and females were also unearthed with higher levels of mathematical self-efficacy among male respondents influencing their decision to study higher level mathematics.

19. The perception of size and shape of resonant objects

Abstract

BackgroundWe investigated the ability of naïve, untrained listeners to identify physical parameters from listening to single impulse sound that 3D polystyrene objects generate as result of an impact collision. We were specifically interested in the perception of object shape and object size and their interaction.Material and MethodsTwenty polystyrene objects of various shapes (spheres, hearts, cubes, eggs, rings and cones) and sizes (between 64 cm 3 and 2278cm 3 ) were used in three experiments investigating relative and absolute size shape perception. In the first experiment, the task was to identify the ‘odd one out’ of three sounds of different shape or size. In the second experiment the task was to identify the shape and size of an object just by listening to it. In the third experiment the task was to rate how similar two sounds are. ResultsResults show that listeners were able to a degree to identify the size and the shape of objects without reference and in relation to each other. Multidimensional scaling suggests that shape (most salient) and size (second most salient) are the predominant perceptual dimensions.ConclusionsWe conclude that humans, to some degree and without training and without prior experience, have the ability to infer physical properties of object size and shape by listening to single impulse sounds. Size and shape seem to be independent and the most salient parameters.

25. Size discrimination of transient signals

Abstract

The importance of spectral cues in size discrimination of transient signals was investigated, and a model for this ability, tAIM, was created based on the biological principles of human hearing. A psychophysics experiment involving 40 participants found that the most important cue for size discrimination of transient signals, created by striking different sizes of polystyrene spheres, was similar to that of speakers listening to vowels – the relative positions of the resonances between comparison signals. It was found possible to scale the sphere signals in order to confuse listeners into believing the signal source was a different size, but two methods of scaling signals in order to sound the same size as another proved inconclusive, suggesting the possibility that transient signals cannot be scaled in a linear fashion as has been shown possible for vowels. Filtering the signals in a number of different ways found that the most important cue in size discrimination of transient signals is the difference between the most prominent resonances available in the spectra of the comparison signals. A model of the auditory system using the dynamic compressive Gammachirp filterbank, and based on the well-known AIM, was created to produce auditory images of transient signals that could be normalised for size. Transient-AIM, or tAIM used the Mellin transform to produce images that showed size normalisation was possible due to the spectral envelope similarities across the sizes of the spheres. tAIM was extended to carry out size discrimination of the spheres using the information contained within the Mellin images. There was a systematic association between Mellin phase and size of objects of various shapes, which suggests that tAIM is able to infer object size from sound recordings of objects being struck.

SummaryIntroduction Patients with Type 1 diabetes mellitus have a high prevalence of coeliac disease, symptoms of which are often mild, atypical, or absent. Untreated coeliac disease is associated with an increased risk of malignancy, particularly of lymphoma. We describe four patients with Type 1 diabetes mellitus and coeliac disease who developed lymphoma. Case reports Two patients were male and two female. In three patients, coeliac disease and lymphoma were diagnosed simultaneously. Enteropathy-associated T cell lymphoma occurred in two patients, Hodgkin’s disease in one, and B cell lymphoma in one. Response to treatment was in general poor, and three patients died soon after the diagnosis of lymphoma was made. Conclusion As the relative risk of lymphoma is reduced by a gluten-free diet, a high index of suspicion for coeliac disease should exist in all Type 1 diabetic patients with unexplained constitutional or gastro- intestinal symptoms. 49. Plasma catecholamines and lipoproteins in chronic psychological stress.

Abstract

Changes in plasma catecholamines, lipoproteins and dietary intake were examined in 13 medical students during a 3-month period prior to their examinations, and in 12 controls. In the medical students mean +/- s.e.(mean) plasma cholesterol increased over the study period (3.98 +/- 0.16 v. 4.26 +/- 0.16 mmol/l, P less than 0.05) and this was reflected by a rise in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (2.53 +/- 0.15 v. 2.71 +/- 0.17 mmol/l, P less than 0.05). Both supine adrenaline (0.45 +/- 0.05 v. 0.70 +/- 0.07 nmol/l, P less than 0.01) and noradrenaline (2.74 +/- 0.18 v. 3.40 +/- 0.31 nmol/l, P less than 0.05) increased over this period. Apart from a decline in the modest alcohol consumption (9.1 +/- 3.45 v. 2.6 +/- 1.4 g/day, P less than 0.02) there was no change in dietary intake in the medical students. There were no significant changes in plasma catecholamines, lipoproteins or dietary intake in control subjects over the study period. Changes in catecholamines and lipoproteins occurring in association with chronic psychological stress may contribute to the increased coronary heart disease mortality associated with Type A behaviour and stressful life events. Abstract

peer-reviewed The transition from primary to secondary school is regarded as one of the most difficult crossings in students’ educational careers. The move, which typically occurs between the ages of twelve and fourteen, can be particularly pronounced for mathematics. This article describes the results of a questionnaire distributed in the Republic of Ireland in which the views of primary and secondary teachers were ascertained with regard to the transition process. A total of 298 primary and 173 secondary teachers completed the questionnaire. Results showed that teachers at both levels identified similar issues such as a lack of continuity between curricula, a lack of knowledge of each other’s curriculum and a lack of communication between both levels. Many of the teachers’ suggestions on how the transition process could be improved centred on these issues, as well as highlighting a need to provide joint professional development opportunities for teachers.
