Josephson Traveling Wave Parametric Amplifiers (JTWPAs) are integral parts of many experiments carried out in quantum technologies. Being composed of hundreds of Josephson junction-based unit cells, such devices exhibit complex nonlinear behavior that typically cannot be fully explained with simple analytical models, thus necessitating the use of numerical simulators. A very useful characteristic of JTWPAs is the possibility of being biased by an external magnetic flux, allowing insitu control of the nonlinearity. It is therefore very desirable for numerical simulators to support this feature. Open-source numerical tools that allow to model JTWPA flux biasing, such as WRSPICE or PSCAN2, are based on time-domain approaches,which typically require long simulation times to get accurate results. In this work, we model the gain performance in a prototypical flux-tunable JTWPA by using JosephsonCircuits.jl,a recently developed frequency-domain open-source numerical simulator, which has the benefit of simulation times about 10,000 faster than time-domain methods. By comparing the numerical and experimental results, we validate this approach for modeling the flux dependent behavior of JTWPAs.

In superconducting qubits, suppression of spontaneous emission is essential to achieve fast dispersive measurement and reset without sacrificing qubit lifetime. We show that resonator-mediated decay of the qubit mode to the feedline can be suppressed using destructive interference, where the readout resonator is coupled to the feedline at two points. This "interferometric Purcell filter" does not require dedicated filter components or impedance mismatch in the feedline, making it suitable for applications such as all-pass readout. We design and fabricate a device with the proposed scheme and demonstrate suppression of resonator-mediated decay that exceeds 2 orders of magnitude over a bandwidth of 400 MHz., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures

The interaction between an atom and an electromagnetic mode of a resonator is of both fundamental interest and is ubiquitous in quantum technologies. Most prior work studies a linear light-matter coupling of the form $g \widehat{\sigma}_x (\widehat{a} + \widehat{a}^\dagger)$, where $g$ measured relative to photonic ($\omega_a$) and atomic ($\omega_b$) mode frequencies can reach the ultrastrong regime ($g/\omega_{a}\!>\!10^{-1}$). In contrast, a nonlinear light-matter coupling of the form $\frac{\chi}{2} \widehat{\sigma}_z \widehat{a}^\dagger \widehat{a}$ has the advantage of commuting with the atomic $\widehat{\sigma}_z$ and photonic $\widehat{a}^\dagger\widehat{a}$ Hamiltonian, allowing for fundamental operations such as quantum-non-demolition measurement. However, due to the perturbative nature of nonlinear coupling, the state-of-the-art $\chi/\text{max}(\omega_a, \omega_b)$ is limited to $\!<\!10^{-2}$. Here, we use a superconducting circuit architecture featuring a quarton coupler to experimentally demonstrate, for the first time, a near-ultrastrong $\chi/\text{max}(\omega_a, \omega_b)= (4.852\pm0.006)\times10^{-2}$ nonlinear coupling of a superconducting artificial atom and a nearly-linear resonator. We also show signatures of light-light nonlinear coupling ($\chi\widehat{a}^\dagger\widehat{a}\widehat{b}^\dagger\widehat{b}$), and $\chi/2\pi = 580.3 \pm 0.4 $ MHz matter-matter nonlinear coupling ($\frac{\chi}{4}\widehat{\sigma}_{z,a}\widehat{\sigma}_{z,b}$) which represents the largest reported $ZZ$ interaction between two coherent qubits. Such advances in the nonlinear coupling strength of light, matter modes enable new physical regimes and could lead to applications such as orders of magnitude faster qubit readout and gates.

We propose and demonstrate transmission-based dispersive readout of a superconducting qubit using an all-pass resonator, which preferentially emits readout photons toward the output. This is in contrast to typical readout schemes, which intentionally mismatch the feedline at one end so that the readout signal preferentially decays toward the output. We show that this intentional mismatch creates scaling challenges, including larger spread of effective resonator linewidths due to non-ideal impedance environments and added infrastructure for impedance matching. A future architecture using multiplexed all-pass readout resonators would avoid the need for intentional mismatch and potentially improve the scaling prospects of quantum computers. As a proof-of-concept demonstration of "all-pass readout," we design and fabricate an all-pass readout resonator that demonstrates insertion loss below 1.17 dB at the readout frequency and a maximum insertion loss of 1.53 dB across its full bandwidth for the lowest three states of a transmon qubit. We demonstrate qubit readout with an average single-shot fidelity of 98.1% in 600 ns; to assess the effect of larger dispersive shift, we implement a shelving protocol and achieve a fidelity of 99.0% in 300 ns., Comment: 16 pages, 15 figures

Fast, high-fidelity, and quantum nondemolition (QND) qubit readout is an essential element of quantum information processing. For superconducting qubits, state-of-the-art readout is based on a dispersive cross-Kerr coupling between a qubit and its readout resonator. The resulting readout can be high-fidelity and QND, but readout times are currently limited to the order of 50 ns due to the dispersive cross-Kerr of magnitude 10 MHz. Here, we present a new readout scheme that uses the quarton coupler to facilitate a large (greater than 250 MHz) cross-Kerr between a transmon qubit and its readout resonator. Full master equation simulations show a 5 ns readout time with greater than 99% readout and QND fidelity. Unlike state-of-the-art dispersive readout, the proposed "quartonic readout" scheme relies on a transmon with linearized transitions as the readout resonator. Such operational points are found from a detailed theoretical treatment and parameter study of the coupled system. The quartonic readout circuit is also experimentally feasible and preserves the coherence properties of the qubit. Our work reveals a new path for order-of-magnitude improvements of superconducting qubit readout by engineering nonlinear light-matter couplings in parameter regimes unreachable by existing designs.

Large Language Models (LLMs) play a pivotal role in generating vast arrays of narratives, facilitating a systematic exploration of their effectiveness for communicating life events in narrative form. In this study, we employ a zero-shot structured narrative prompt to generate 24,000 narratives using OpenAI's GPT-4. From this dataset, we manually classify 2,880 narratives and evaluate their validity in conveying birth, death, hiring, and firing events. Remarkably, 87.43% of the narratives sufficiently convey the intention of the structured prompt. To automate the identification of valid and invalid narratives, we train and validate nine Machine Learning models on the classified datasets. Leveraging these models, we extend our analysis to predict the classifications of the remaining 21,120 narratives. All the ML models excelled at classifying valid narratives as valid, but experienced challenges at simultaneously classifying invalid narratives as invalid. We present an efficient, accurate, and comprehensive analysis framework for generic, multi-port nonlinear parametric circuits, in the presence of dissipation from lossy circuit components, based on "quantum-adapted" X-parameters. We apply this method to Josephson traveling-wave parametric amplifiers (JTWPAs) - a key component in superconducting and spin qubit quantum computing architectures - which are challenging to model accurately due to their thousands of linear and nonlinear circuit components. X-parameters are generated from a harmonic balance solution of the classical nonlinear circuit and then mapped to the field ladder operator basis, so that the energy associated with each of the multiple interacting modes corresponds to photon occupancy, rather than classical power waves. Explicit relations for the quantum efficiency of a generic, multi-port, multi-frequency parametric circuit are presented and evaluated for two distinct JTWPA designs. The gain and quantum efficiency are consistent with those obtained from Fourier analysis of time-domain solutions, but with enhanced accuracy, speed, and the ability to include real-world impairments, statistical variations, parasitic effects, and impedance mismatches (in- and out-of-band) seamlessly. Squeezing of the electromagnetic vacuum is an essential metrological technique used to reduce quantum noise in applications spanning gravitational wave detection, biological microscopy, and quantum information science. In superconducting circuits, the resonator-based Josephson-junction parametric amplifiers conventionally used to generate squeezed microwaves are constrained by a narrow bandwidth and low dynamic range. In this work, we develop a dual-pump, broadband Josephson traveling-wave parametric amplifier that combines a phase-sensitive extinction ratio of 56 dB with single-mode squeezing on par with the best resonator-based squeezers. We also demonstrate two-mode squeezing at microwave frequencies with bandwidth in the gigahertz range that is almost two orders of magnitude wider than that of contemporary resonator-based squeezers. Our amplifier is capable of simultaneously creating entangled microwave photon pairs with large frequency separation, with potential applications including high-fidelity qubit readout, quantum illumination and teleportation.

The success of the current generation of Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) hardware shows that quantum hardware may be able to tackle complex problems even without error correction. One outstanding issue is that of coherent errors arising from the increased complexity of these devices. These errors can accumulate through a circuit, making their impact on algorithms hard to predict and mitigate. Iterative algorithms like Quantum Imaginary Time Evolution are susceptible to these errors. This article presents the combination of both noise tailoring using Randomized Compiling and error mitigation with a purification. We also show that Cycle Benchmarking gives an estimate of the reliability of the purification. We apply this method to the Quantum Imaginary Time Evolution of a Transverse Field Ising Model and report an energy estimation and a ground state infidelity both below 1\%. Our methodology is general and can be used for other algorithms and platforms. Simultaneous ideal quantum measurements of multiple single-photon-level signals would advance applications in quantum information processing, metrology, and astronomy, but require the first amplifier to be simultaneously broadband, quantum limited, and directional. However, conventional traveling-wave parametric amplifiers support broadband amplification at the cost of increased added noise and are not genuinely directional due to non-negligible nonlinear backward wave generation. In this work, we introduce a new class of amplifiers which encode the information in the Floquet modes of the system. Such Floquet mode amplifiers prevent information leakage and overcome the trade-off between quantum efficiency (QE) and bandwidth. Crucially, Floquet mode amplifiers strongly suppress the nonlinear forward-backward wave coupling and are therefore genuinely directional and readily integrable with qubits, clearing another major obstacle towards broadband ideal quantum measurements. Furthermore, Floquet mode amplifiers are insensitive to out-of-band impedance mismatch, which otherwise may lead to gain ripples, parametric oscillations, and instability in conventional traveling-wave parametric amplifiers. Finally, we show that a Floquet mode Josephson traveling-wave parametric amplifier implementation can simultaneously achieve $>\!20\,$dB gain and a QE of $\eta/\eta_{\mathrm{ideal}}\!> 99.9\%$ of the quantum limit over more than an octave of bandwidth. We propose a traveling wave scheme for broadband microwave isolation using parametric mode conversion in conjunction with adiabatic phase matching technique in a pair of coupled nonlinear transmission lines. This scheme is compatible with the circuit quantum electrodynamics architecture (cQED) and provides isolation without introducing additional quantum noise. We first present the scheme in a general setting then propose an implementation with Josephson junction transmission lines. Numerical simulation shows more than 20 dB isolation over an octave bandwidth (4-8\,GHz) in a 2000 unit cell device with less than 0.05 dB insertion loss dominated by dielectric loss., Comment: Main text: 8 pages, 4 figures. Strong nonlinear coupling of superconducting qubits and/or photons is a critical building block for quantum information processing. Due to the perturbative nature of the Josephson nonlinearity, linear coupling is often used in the dispersive regime to approximate nonlinear coupling. However, this dispersive coupling is weak and the underlying linear coupling mixes the local modes which, for example, distributes unwanted self-Kerr to photon modes. Here, we use the quarton to yield purely nonlinear coupling between two linearly decoupled transmon qubits. The quarton's zero $\phi^2$ potential enables a giant gigahertz-level cross-Kerr which is an order of magnitude stronger compared to existing schemes, and the quarton's positive $\phi^4$ potential can cancel the negative self-Kerr of qubits to linearize them into resonators. The successful implementation of algorithms on quantum processors relies on the accurate control of quantum bits (qubits) to perform logic gate operations. In this era of noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) computing, systematic miscalibrations, drift, and crosstalk in the control of qubits can lead to a coherent form of error which has no classical analog. Coherent errors severely limit the performance of quantum algorithms in an unpredictable manner, and mitigating their impact is necessary for realizing reliable quantum computations. Moreover, the average error rates measured by randomized benchmarking and related protocols are not sensitive to the full impact of coherent errors, and therefore do not reliably predict the global performance of quantum algorithms, leaving us unprepared to validate the accuracy of future large-scale quantum computations. Randomized compiling is a protocol designed to overcome these performance limitations by converting coherent errors into stochastic noise, dramatically reducing unpredictable errors in quantum algorithms and enabling accurate predictions of algorithmic performance from error rates measured via cycle benchmarking. In this work, we demonstrate significant performance gains under randomized compiling for the four-qubit quantum Fourier transform algorithm and for random circuits of variable depth on a superconducting quantum processor. Additionally, we accurately predict algorithm performance using experimentally-measured error rates. Our results demonstrate that randomized compiling can be utilized to leverage and predict the capabilities of modern-day noisy quantum processors, paving the way forward for scalable quantum computing.

Deep neural network models are becoming increasingly popular and have been used in various tasks such as computer vision, speech recognition, and natural language processing. Machine learning models are commonly trained in a resource-rich environment and then deployed in a distinct environment such as high availability machines or edge devices. To assist the portability of models, the open-source community has proposed the Open Neural Network Exchange (ONNX) standard. In this paper, we present a high-level, preliminary report on our onnx-mlir compiler, which generates code for the inference of deep neural network models described in the ONNX format. Onnx-mlir is an open-source compiler implemented using the Multi-Level Intermediate Representation (MLIR) infrastructure recently integrated in the LLVM project. Onnx-mlir relies on the MLIR concept of dialects to implement its functionality. We propose here two new dialects: (1) an ONNX specific dialect that encodes the ONNX standard semantics, and (2) a loop-based dialect to provide for a common lowering point for all ONNX dialect operations. Each intermediate representation facilitates its own characteristic set of graph-level and loop-based optimizations respectively. We illustrate our approach by following several models through the proposed representations and we include some early optimization work and performance results., Comment: 8 pages

In the field of frustrated magnetism, Kitaev models provide a unique framework to study the phenomena of spin fractionalization and emergent lattice gauge theories in two and three spatial dimensions. Their ground states are quantum spin liquids, which can typically be described in terms of a Majorana band structure and an ordering of the underlying $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge structure. Here we provide a comprehensive classification of the "gauge physics" of a family of elementary three-dimensional Kitaev models, discussing how their thermodynamics and ground state order depends on the underlying lattice geometry. Using large-scale, sign-free quantum Monte Carlo simulations we show that the ground-state gauge order can generally be understood in terms of the length of elementary plaquettes -- a result which extends the applicability of Lieb's theorem to lattice geometries beyond its original scope. At finite temperatures, the proliferation of (gapped) vison excitations destroys the gauge order at a critical temperature scale, which we show to correlate with the size of vison gap for the family of three-dimensional Kitaev models. We also discuss two notable exceptions where the lattice structure gives rise to "gauge frustration" or intertwines the gauge ordering with time-reversal symmetry breaking. Detecting traveling photons is an essential primitive for many quantum information processing tasks. We introduce a single-photon detector design operating in the microwave domain, based on a weakly nonlinear metamaterial where the nonlinearity is provided by a large number of Josephson junctions. The combination of weak nonlinearity and large spatial extent circumvents well-known obstacles limiting approaches based on a localized Kerr medium. Using numerical many-body simulations we show that the single-photon detection fidelity increases with the length of the metamaterial to approach one at experimentally realistic lengths. A remarkable feature of the detector is that the metamaterial approach allows for a large detection bandwidth. In stark contrast to conventional photon detectors operating in the optical domain, the photon is not destroyed by the detection and the photon wavepacket is minimally disturbed. Chiral spin liquids (CSLs) are time-reversal symmetry breaking ground states of frustrated quantum magnets that show no long-range magnetic ordering, but instead exhibit topological order and fractional excitations. Their realization in simple and tractable microscopic models has, however, remained an open challenge for almost two decades until it was realized that Kitaev models on lattices with odd-length loops are natural hosts for such states, even in the absence of a time-reversal symmetry breaking magnetic field. Here we report on the formation of CSLs in a three-dimensional Kitaev model, which differ from their widely studied two-dimensional counterparts, namely, they exhibit a crystalline ordering of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge fluxes and thereby break some of the underlying lattice symmetries. We study the formation of these unconventional CSLs via extensive quantum Monte Carlo simulations and demonstrate that they are separated from the featureless paramagnet at high temperatures by a single first-order transition at which both time-reversal and lattice symmetries are simultaneously broken. Using variational approaches for the ground state, we explore the effect of varying the Kitaev couplings and find at least five distinct CSL phases, all of which possess crystalline ordering of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge fluxes. For some of these phases, the complementary itinerant Majorana fermions exhibit gapless band structures with topological features such as Weyl nodes or nodal lines in the bulk and Fermi arc or drumhead surface states.

Over the past two decades, the performance of superconducting quantum circuits has tremendously improved. The progress of superconducting qubits enabled a new industry branch to emerge from global technology enterprises to quantum computing startups. Here, an overview of superconducting quantum circuit microwave control is presented. Furthermore, we discuss one of the persistent engineering challenges in the field, how to control the electromagnetic environment of increasingly complex superconducting circuits such that they are simultaneously protected and efficiently controllable.

OpenMP is a shared memory programming model which supports the offloading of target regions to accelerators such as NVIDIA GPUs. The implementation in Clang/LLVM aims to deliver a generic GPU compilation toolchain that supports both the native CUDA C/C++ and the OpenMP device offloading models. There are situations where the semantics of OpenMP and those of CUDA diverge. One such example is the policy for implicitly handling local variables. In CUDA, local variables are implicitly mapped to thread local memory and thus become private to a CUDA thread. In OpenMP, due to semantics that allow the nesting of regions executed by different numbers of threads, variables need to be implicitly \emph{shared} among the threads of a contention group. In this paper we introduce a re-design of the OpenMP device data sharing infrastructure that is responsible for the implicit sharing of local variables in the Clang/LLVM toolchain. We introduce a new data sharing infrastructure that lowers implicitly shared variables to the shared memory of the GPU. We measure the amount of shared memory used by our scheme in cases that involve scalar variables and statically allocated arrays. The evaluation is carried out by offloading to K40 and P100 NVIDIA GPUs. For scalar variables the pressure on shared memory is relatively low, under 26\% of shared memory utilization for the K40, and does not negatively impact occupancy. The limiting occupancy factor in that case is register pressure. The data sharing scheme offers the users a simple memory model for controlling the implicit allocation of device shared memory.
