Thisstudy investigated the use of a well-designed computer-supported collaborative learningenvironment, namely Virtual Math Teams (VMT), to develop middle school students’geometric thinking. It also looked into students’ VMT discourse to betterunderstand factors leading to higher van Hiele levels of geometric thinking.The participants of the study were selected from middle school students whowere at the visual geometric thinking level. For treatment, students werepresented with a set of activities on quadrilaterals, which were developedbased on van Hiele’s phases of learning geometry, within the VMT environment.The data were collected by using the van Hiele Geometry Test. The VMT chat logswere qualitatively analyzed using the three-core collaborative problem-solvingcompetencies used in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA)2015. Qualitative results pointedout that collaborative competencies could be essential in developing students’geometric thinking levels within the VMT environment. Bu karma yöntem çalışması, iyi tasarlanmış bir bilgisayar destekli işbirliğiyle öğrenme ortamı olan Sanal Matematik Takımları ortamının Türkiye'deki ortaokul öğrencilerinin van Hiele geometrik düşünme düzeylerinin ve matematik ve teknolojiye yönelik tutumlarının gelişimini incelemiştir. Ayrıca, öğrencilerin daha yüksek geometrik düşünme puanlarına yol açan faktörleri daha iyi anlamak için, öğrencilerin Sanal Matematik Takımları ortamındaki söylemine nitel olarak bakılmıştır. Araştırmanın örneklemi, İstanbul'da bir devlet okulu ve bir özel okulda okuyan ve van Hiele geometrik düşünme testine göre seviyesi görsel düzey olan beşinci ve yedinci sınıf öğrencilerden oluşmuştur (n=24). Uygulama olarak, öğrencilere, van Hiele'nin aşama temelli öğretim stratejisine dayalı olarak geliştirilen dörtgenler konusu (yamuk, eşkenar dörtgen, paralelkenar, dikdörtgen ve kare) Sanal Matematik Takımları ortamında sunulmuştur. Veriler, nicel kısım için van Hiele geometrik düşünce seviye testi ve matematik ve teknoloji ölçeği ile toplanmış, nitel kısım ise Sanal Matematik Takımları sohbet kayıtlarını içermiştir. Nicel sonuçlar, öğrencilerin van Hiele geometrik düşünce seviyelerinin istatistiksel anlamlı olarak geliştirdiğini göstermiştir. Bunun yanında, öğrencilerin matematik ve teknolojiye yönelik tutumları, teknolojiyle matematik öğrenmeye yönelik tutum olan bir alt ölçek dışında değişmemiştir. The study also qualitatively looked into students' Virtual Math Teams discourse to better understand factors leading to higher geometric thinking scores. The sample of the study consisted of 5th and 7th grade students who are at the visualization level according to the van Hiele geometric thinking test from a public and a private schools in İstanbul (n=24). For treatment, students are presented with instruction, which was developed based on Hiele's phased-based instruction strategy, within the Virtual Math Teams environment on quadrilaterals (trapezoid, rhombus, parallelogram, rectangle, and square). The data were collected by using van Hiele geometric test and mathematics and technology scale for the quantitative part, and involved the Virtual Math Teams chat logs for qualitative part. The quantitative results showed a statistically significant development on the students' van Hiele geometric thinking. Furthermore, the students' attitudes towards mathematics and technology did not change except a subscale that is attitudes to learning mathematics with technology. There was a statistically significant increase in the students' attitudes to learning mathematics with technology after the treatment. Qualitative results pointed out that collaboration among students could be an essential factor to develop students' geometric thinking levels within the Virtual Math Teams environment. 123

Many of the distributed localization algorithms are based on relaxed optimization formulations of the localization problem. These algorithms commonly rely on first-order optimization methods, and hence may require many iterations or communications among computational agents. Furthermore, some of these distributed algorithms put a considerable computational demand on the agents. In this paper, we show that for tree-structured scattered sensor networks, which are networks that their inter-sensor range measurement graphs have few edges (few range measurements among sensors) and can be represented using a tree, it is possible to devise an efficient distributed localization algorithm that solely relies on second-order methods. Particularly, we apply a state-of-the-art primal-dual interior-point method to a semidefinite relaxation of the maximum-likelihood formulation of the localization problem. We then show how it is possible to exploit the tree-structure in the network and use message-passing or dynamic programming over trees, to distribute computations among different computational agents. The resulting algorithm requires far fewer iterations and communications among agents to converge to an accurate estimate. Moreover, the number of required communications among agents, seems to be less sensitive and more robust to the number of sensors in the network, the number of available measurements and the quality of the measurements. This is in stark contrast to distributed algorithms that rely on first-order methods. Cramér-Rao lower bounds (CRLBs) are proposed for deterministic parameter estimation under model mismatch conditions where the assumed data model used in the design of the estimators differs from the true data model. The proposed CRLBs are defined for the family of estimators that may have a specified bias (gradient) with respect to the assumed model. The resulting CRLBs are calculated for a linear Gaussian measurement model and compared to the performance of the maximum likelihood estimator for the corresponding estimation problem.

In this technical report, some derivations for the smoother proposed in [1] are presented. More specifically, the derivations for the cyclic iteration needed to solve the variational Bayes smoother for linear state-space models with unknownprocess and measurement noise covariances in [1] are presented. Further, the variational iterations are compared with iterations of the Expectation Maximization (EM) algorithm for smoothing linear state-space models with unknown noise covariances. [1] T. We propose a greedy mixture reduction algorithm which is capable of pruning mixture components as well as merging them based on the Kullback-Leibler divergence (KLD). The algorithm is distinct from the well-known Runnalls' KLD based method since it is not restricted to merging operations. The capability of pruning (in addition to merging) gives the algorithm the ability of preserving the peaks of the original mixture during the reduction. Analytical approximations are derived to circumvent the computational intractability of the KLD which results in a computationally efficient method. The proposed algorithm is compared with Runnalls' and Williams' methods in two numerical examples, using both simulated and real world data. The results indicate that the performance and computational complexity of the proposed approach make it an efficient alternative to existing mixture reduction methods.

Intramuscular hemangiomas are rare benign tumors and are mainly affecting the extremity muscles. If they do not cause pain or excessive, the diagnosis may require quite a long time. We present a 23 year old male patient who was admitted to our clinic with a slowly enlarging lession in the left lateral chest wall. Magnetic resonance imaging reported a vascular mass measuring 10x5x4 cm. in the left latissimus dorsi muscle. We performed a complete resection of the tumor with safe margins of the surrounding tissue and the histopathologic examination demonstrated an intramuscular hemangioma of the cavernous type. The patient has been free of recurrence for 1 year after surgery., ÖZETİntramüsküler hemanjiomlar nadir görülen ve esas olarak ekstremite kaslarında sapta- nan selim tümörlerdir. Ağrı şikayeti veya aşırı büyümeye neden olmadıkları durumlarda tanı konulması için geçen süre oldukça uzun olmaktadır. Kliniğimize sol yan göğüs du- varında yavaş büyüme gösteren lezyonu nedeniyle başvuran 23 yaşında bir erkek hasta olgusu sunmaktayız. Manyetik rezonans görüntülemesi sol latissimus dorsi kası içinde 10x5x4 cm. boyutlarında vasküler bir kitle olduğunu raporladı. Çevre dokulardan güvenli sınırlar dahilinde eksiksiz tümör rezeksiyonu uyguladık ve histopatolojik inceleme kaver- nöz tip intramüsküler hemanjiom olduğunu gösterdi. These lesions are mostly detected in infants or children younger than two years of age. Occurence in adults is so uncommon and fewer than 100 cases of adult lymphangioma have been reported in the literature. Bu lezyonlar çoğunlukla infantlarda ya da iki yaşından küçük bebeklerde bulunmaktadır. Erişkin yaşlarda çok nadir görülürler ve literatürde 100’den az erişkin lenfanjioma vakası bildirilmiştir. Burada; 60 yaşında, sağ klavikulanın postero- runa uzanım gösteren ve iki defa aspire edilerek boşaltılmasına rağmen nüks eden bir kistik higromalı olguyu sunuyoruz.Kistik higroma, genellikle boyun arka veya yan bölümünde yer alan, lenfatik sistemden kaynaklanan bir anomalidir. Boyunda veya aksiller bölgede yumuşak doku içinde tek veya septumlarla ayrılan çoğul kistler mevcuttur. Kistler değişik boyut ve büyüklüklerde olabilir. Kistik higromanın görülme sıklığı 1/6000 canlı doğumdur. Düşüklerden sonra yapılan araştırmalarda ise 1/750 oranında kistik higromaya rastlandığı bildirilmiştir (1-2). Burada erişkin hastada, atipik olarak klavikulanın posterioruna uzanım gösteren kistik higromanın tedavi yöntemi açısından literatüre katkısı olacağını düşünerek yayınlamak istedik.

Many estimation problems require a mixture reduction algorithm with which an increasing number of mixture components are reduced to a tractable level. In this technical report a discussion on dierent aspects of mixture reduction is given followed by a presentation of numerical simulation on reduction of mixture densities where the component density belongs to the exponential family of distributions.

Yapılandırmacı Kuram'ın eğitbilimdeki kurucusu olan Piaget'nin kuramını ortaya koyarken belirlemiş olduğu olgulardan birisi de çocukta animizm olgusudur. Bu olgu çocuklarda canlılıkla ilgili konuların öğrenilmesinde bir engel teşkil etmektedir. 2005 Hayat Bilgisi Öğretim Programı'nın, MEB tarafından Yapılandırmacı Kurama göre hazırlandığı belirtilmiştir. Bu durumda programın animizm olgusuna uygunluğunu beklenmektedir. Buna göre bu tezin amacı; animizm olgusunun günümüz ve ülkemiz çocuklarında geçerliğini tespit ederek, 2005 Hayat Bilgisi Öğretim Programı'nın Piaget'nin çocukta animizm olgusuna uygunluğunu irdelemektir. Çalışma nitel araştırma modeline uygun olarak yürütülmüştür. Veri toplama araçları olarak, doküman incelemesi ve görüşme teknikleri kullanılmıştır. Araştırmada örneklem olarak 4'ü resmi, 2'si özel toplam 6 okuldan seçilen 60 öğrenciyle yarı yapılandırılmış, birebir görüşme uygulanmıştır. Okulların seçiminde maksimum amaçsal örnekleme, öğrencilerin seçiminde ise tabakalı örnekleme yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Programın canlılıkla ilgili 11 kazanımı ise doküman analizi yöntemiyle belirlenmiştir. Araştırma sonuçlarına göre animizm olgusu günümüz ve ülkemiz çocuklarında varlığını sürdürmektedir. Yapılandırmacı Kuram'a göre hazırlandığı belirtilen 2005 Hayat Bilgisi Öğretim Programı'nın animizm olgusuna uygun olmadığı görülmektedir. The present study first aims at defining animism is still obstacle for children in Turkey as defined by Piaget. Meanwhile, it is claimed that Life Science Education Curriculum 2005 is prepared based on constructivist approach. This the present research also interrogates whether the aforementioned curriculum is appropriate in the context of constructivism. The present research is based qualitative techniques including semi-structured interviews and document analysis. To do that sampling schools are chosen according to maximum variation sampling though participant students are selected based on stratified sampling technique (4 public and 2 private schools N= 60). Data collection includes semi-structured interview with 60 students. Eleven objectives of the aforementioned curriculum in terms of animism are also analyzed in the frame of documental analysis. Results show that animism is still the exiting barrier for 8 years old children and animism phenomenon in the Life Science education Curriculum 2005 is not prepared according to the constructivist approach. 246

Measurements of individual wheel speeds and absolute position from a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) are used for high-precision estimation of vehicle tire radii in this work. The radii deviation from its nominal value is modeled as a Gaussian process and included as noise components in a vehicle model. The novelty lies in a Bayesian approach to estimate online both the state vector of the vehicle model and noise parameters using a marginalized particle filter. No model approximations are needed such as in previously proposed algorithms based on the extended Kalman filter. The proposed approach outperforms common methods used for joint state and parameter estimation when compared with respect to accuracy and computational time. Field tests show that the absolute radius can be estimated with millimeter accuracy, while the relative wheel radius on one axleis estimated with submillimeter accuracy. CADICS

Bu tezde belli problemlerin çözümünde parçacık filtresi olarak da bilinen sıralı Monte Carlo (SMC) tekniklerini kullanan yöntemlerde iyileştirmeler yapılmıştır. Ele alınan ilk problem olan Bayes yaklaşımlı çoklu hedef izleme (ÇHİ) problemi için Dirichlet süreci (DS) temelli parametrik olmayan Bayes modellerinin kullanımı önerilmiştir. İkinci problem, önerilen DS temelli ÇHİ algoritması için önemli bir uygulama alanı teşkil eden, konuşma sinyallerinde ses yolu rezonans frekanslarını izleme problemidir. Son olarak, doğrusal ve Gauss olmayan durum uzay modellerinde parametre kestirimi amaçlı kullanılan SMC temelli bir algoritma incelenmiştir. Bu çalışma kapsamında iz yörüngesini temel olarak alan algoritmalar için regülerizasyon teknikleri kullanılarak iyileştirme sağlanmıştır. In this thesis a number of improvements have been established for specific methods which utilize sequential Monte Carlo (SMC), aka. Particle filtering (PF) techniques. The first problem is the Bayesian multi-target tracking (MTT) problem for which we propose the use of non-parametric Bayesian models that are based on time varying extension of Dirichlet process (DP) models. The second problem studied in this thesis is an important application area for the proposed DP based MTT method; the tracking of vocal tract resonance frequencies of the speech signals. Lastly, we investigate SMC based parameter estimation problem of nonlinear non-Gaussian state space models in which we provide a performance improvement for the path density based methods by utilizing regularization techniques. 120

ÖZET Bu çalışmada İkinci Dünya Savaşından sonra ortaya çıkan konut açığını kapatmak için geliştirilen betonarme prefabrike konut yapım yöntemlerinin, hızlı ve ekonomik yapılmalarına rağmen, estetik olmadıkları eleştirilerini almalarının nedenleri araştırılmıştır. Estetik kavramının ne olduğu, neye ve niçin güzel dendiği antikiteden günümüze kadar tartışılmaktadır. Bu tartışmalar sonucunda 18. yüzyılda estetik bilimi, aşağı bilgi alanının yetkinliği olan güzelliği inceleyen bir bilim dalı olarak kurulmuş, ve daha sonra modern estetik teorileri geliştirilmiştir. Mimarlık öznesi insan olan, fonksiyon, teknoloji ve estetiğin bir araya gelmesiyle oluşan mekan düzenleme ve oluşturma eylemine verilen isimdir. Endüstriyel bir ürün olarak konut yapısının üretilmesi bu eylem alanında insanlığın başlangıcından beri oluşmuş konut mimarisiyle ilgili ölçek ve biçimle ilgili bazı ilişkileri değiştirmiştir. Prefabrike yapıların kurgusunu ön üretimli elemanların birbirleriyle birleşme noktalarında oluşan derz çizgileri sayesinde okumak olasıdır. Hızlı ve ekonomik yapım amacıyla tekrar edilen bu elemanların arasında oluşan derz çizgileri, gerekli etütler yapılmadığında, ritmik bir uyumdan yoksun tekdüze cephelerin oluşmasına neden olabilmektedir. Beton yüzeylerin doğal renginin tekdüzeliği, bu yüzeylerde oluşabilen dokusal bozulmalar, bu tür yapılan estetik açıdan olumsuz eleştirelere hedef yapmıştır. Ayrıca kitlesel üretimi kolaylaştırmak amacıyla kullanılan teknikler, vaziyet planlarını da şekillendirerek, konut birimlerinin tekrarından oluşan bir tekdüzeliğe neden olabilmektedirler.
