The species-specific and age-related autumn migration strategies of the sedge, reed and great reed warbler were investigated at stopover sites between central Europe and north-eastern Africa during autumn. Adult reed warblers accumulated larger fat reserves than juveniles and consequently were able to cover longer distances from most stopover sites. Juvenile sedge warblers, on the other hand, left Europe with significantly larger fat reserves than adults as opposed to the populations migrating along the western route. Both juvenile and adult great reed warblers were potentially able to make long flights without refuelling from the northern part of the Mediterranean region onwards. It was the proximity of large ecological barriers that had the most prominent influence on the potential flight distances of adult and juvenile Acrocephalus warblers during their southward migration. In reed and sedge warblers, the differences in mean flight distances covered by adults and juveniles were the largest (ca. 600 km) just before the crossing of the Mediterranean Sea, but smaller (ca. 200 and 400 km, respectively) in front of the Sahara Desert. Juvenile and adult great reed warblers were potentially able to cover 1660 km from Turkey, which was also supported by very low numbers of individuals caught at the Egyptian ringing sites. The results of this study carried out in the key regions of the eastern European–African flyway documented that migration strategies differed between adults and juveniles of three long-distance migrant species, yet this variation depended on the migration stage and the proximity of natural ecological barriers.

The effects of recent climate change on the phenology of avian breeding and migration, geographical range shifts, and decreasing migration distances are well documented. Only a few studies have focused on the long-term influence of these changes on the body condition of migrants, which is important as it is likely to affect the fitness of the whole population. Eurasian blackcaps have adapted their migratory behaviour to changing ecological factors. These changes seem to favour the species and its migratory populations have increased over the last decades in Europe. In the present study, we analysed the body condition index of juvenile blackcaps at their stop-over site in the southern Baltic region during autumn migration from 1967 to 2006. This index was distinctly higher since the 1990s than in the middle of the 1960s, when the number of migrating blackcaps was at least twofold lower. Moreover, there was a reduction in recapture rates of blackcaps from 14% to 6% during these periods which may imply that warblers were staying for a shorter time at the stop-over site as their body condition was higher. We hypothesized that higher berry crop availability resulted in the higher condition of migrating blackcaps. Body condition index also reflecting fuel load in migrants was higher in long-distance blackcaps compared to the short-distance ones. As the former are time-minimizing migrants, their higher body condition/fuel load may allow them to migrate faster to wintering grounds in sub-Saharan Africa.

Although urbanization poses various threats to avifauna, some bird species, including Mallards (Anas platyrhynchos), choose towns and cities as their wintering habitats, possibly due to favourable temperatures and abundant anthropogenic food. In this study, we investigated how population dynamics changed in relation to winter harshness and intensity of supplementary bird feeding in Mallard, a dabbing duck species well adapted to an urban environment. We surveyed 15 city ponds for five consecutive years, counting overwintering individuals and incidents of bird feeding conducted by the citizens of Gdańsk. Number of Mallards observed in the studied area fluctuated both annually and within seasons, with on average 327 (± SD = 108.5) individuals and a male-biased sex ratio reported. We observed a gradient of feeding intensity on the surveyed ponds, with number of feeding incidents ranging from 0 to 30 in a day. The results indicated that the number of Mallards increased with the bird feeding intensity, independently of the size of the studied ponds, and both males and females were similarly attracted by food provisioning. More severe wintering conditions, expressed by the percentage of the ice cover of studied ponds resulted in more birds wintering in the urban area. This effect was more pronounced in females compared to males, possibly due to females having a lower ability to withstand severe wintering conditions, forcing them to relocate towards urban areas. Our results confirm that urbanized areas may serve as wintering grounds for birds, due to additional food resources available there and milder wintering conditions compared to surrounding rural areas.

The great reed warbler Acrocephalus arundinaceus is a common migrant through the Western Palearctic. However, its migration strategy, especially the spatiotemporal pattern of accumulation and utilisation of energy stores en route, is poorly known. Using ringing data collected at distant stopover sites located from Central Europe to Asia Minor, we observed that pattern in juvenile great reed warblers migrating along the eastern European flyway in autumn. We analysed body condition and stopover duration and estimated potential flight ranges for this species, taking into account two large ecological barriers – the Mediterranean Sea and the Sahara Desert – which it crosses during its southward migration. In Central and South-Eastern Europe the seasonal trends in body condition were similar and non-linear, with low values in August (i.e., during intensive migration of Acrocephalidae), and then a significant increase from the beginning of September until the end of the month. Estimated potential flight ranges showed that individuals migrating through Central and South-Eastern Europe might generally reach only the northern coast of the Mediterranean Sea. On the other hand, those flying from Asia Minor were able to reach the northern edge of the Sahel zone, crossing two large ecological barriers without refuelling. Therefore, it seems that great reed warblers change their autumn strategy en route: first, they migrate in short steps with low energy reserves through continental Europe; and then, after intensive refuelling before the Mediterranean Sea, they reach sub-Saharan Africa in a long flight. Based on the analysis of ringing data from several stopover sites, we show the complex pattern of how a long-distance migratory species accumulates and utilises its energy stores en route.

Nowadays both intra- and interlingual surtitles are an inherent element of almost all opera produc­tions and, partly thanks to this technology, opera is now going through a renaissance. The trend of staging operas in a modernised fashion is especially popular these days, but it represents a particu­lar challenge for surtitlers. It is argued in this article that while surtitles accompanying traditional opera productions are usually intrasemiotic, as their source text is just the libretto, modernised productions often have intersemiotic surtitles. The article analyses fragments of surtitles prepared for four different operas staged in the Metropolitan Opera House, Bayerische Staatsoper and Royal Opera House. The result show that while traditionally surtitles provide the viewers with the mean­ing of the libretto, the role of intersemiotic surtitles is much more extended, as they provide the audience with more comprehensive information about the whole opera production.

Long-distance host movements play a major regulatory role in shaping microbial communities of their digestive tract. Here, we studied gut microbiota composition during seasonal migration in five shorebird species (Charadrii) that use different migratory (stopover) habitats. Our analyses revealed significant interspecific variation in both composition and diversity of gut microbiome, but the effect of host identity was weak. A strong variation in gut microbiota was observed between coastal and inland (dam reservoir and river valley) stopover habitats within species. Comparisons between host age classes provided support for an increasing alpha diversity of gut microbiota during ontogeny and an age-related remodeling of microbiome composition. There was, however, no correlation between microbiome and diet composition across study species. Finally, we detected high prevalence of avian pathogens, which may cause zoonotic diseases in humans (e.g. Vibrio cholerae) and we identified stopover habitat as one of the major axes of variation in the bacterial pathogen exposure risk in shorebirds. Our study not only sheds new light on ecological processes that shape avian gut microbiota, but also has implications for our better understanding of host–pathogen interface and the role of birds in long-distance transmission of pathogens. The present paper focuses on the issue of translating operatic libretti in the form of surtitles. This is a very specific type of translation, and it becomes even more challenging when operatic productions for which surtitles are created are modernised. In such cases the application of skopos theory proves to be the most useful and effective, even though some of its premises may be regarded as controversial. The data for the present study come from the most reputable opera houses, for example the Metropolitan Opera House or Royal Opera House, as they are known for providing their audiences with high-quality libretti translations.

Opera is undoubtedly a particularly high and traditional genre of art, but recently there have been numerous attempts at breaking this stereotype and presenting opera in a contemporary light. The most popular way of achieving this aim is either staging modernized opera productions, i.e. transferring their plot from their traditional setting to the here and now, or considerably changing their interpretation. Staging modernized productions involves, first of all, the issue of stage design, and an alteration in the traditional interpretation is mostly created by acting, but nowadays it is also the translation shown in the form of surtitles that creates the significance of operatic productions.

Wprowadzenie: Zespół Downa (ZD) jest najczęściej występującą genetycznie uwarunkowaną patologią w całej populacji. Nadekspresja materiału genetycznego, w wyniku potrojenia liczby genów na 21 chromosomie, powoduje charakterystyczne cechy fenotypowe, wady narządowe, układowe, zaburzenia rozwoju fizycznego i psychoruchowego. Celem pracy było opracowanie modelu matematycznego syntetycznej funkcji diagnostycznej, mierzącej poziom patologii rozwojowej (ZPPR) w populacji dzieci z ZD i niedoczynnością tarczycy w odniesieniu do populacji dzieci zdrowych. Materiał i metody: Badania przeprowadzono u 80 dzieci z ZD w wieku od 0 do 3 lat leczonych według Wrocławskiego Modelu Usprawniania (WMU) – między innymi farmakoterapią hormonem tarczycy w dawce suplementacyjnej bądź stymulującej, w grupie 35 dzieci z niedoczynnością tarczycy (GP) i w grupie 41 dzieci zdrowych (GK). Skonstruowano model syntetycznej funkcji diagnostycznej według algorytmu Anny Kreft, mierzący poziom patologii rozwojowej (ZPPR), opisanej przez 19 cech diagnostycznych, m.in.: czas twania ciąży, przebieg okresu noworodkowego, obecność wady wrodzonej, parametry rozwoju fizycznego, psychomotorycznego, poziom TSH. Wyniki: Niedoczynność tarczycy na podstawie badań laboratoryjnych rozpoznano u 39 dzieci z ZD (48,8%), u 35 pacjentów rozpoznano postać subkliniczną, a wrodzony charakter zaburzeń stwierdzono u 11 osób. Poziom TSH u dzieci z ZD wynosił 5,51 µIU/ml, fT3 – 4,21 pg/ml, fT4 – 1,32 ng/dl. Pod wpływem stosowanej terapii obniżyła się wartość TSH z 5,51 do 3,43 µIU/ml po roku i do 2,8 µIU/ml po dwóch latach terapii. Wartość funkcji syntetycznej ZPPR jest wyższa w grupie dzieci z ZD (0,61), niż w grupie porównawczej GP (0,27) i w grupie dzieci zdrowych GK (0,29), przy czym nie zależy od płci, czasu trwania ciąży, ale jest wyższa u dzieci z nieprawidłowym przebiegiem okresu noworodkowego. Na początku terapii u dzieci z ZD wartość funkcji ZPPR wynosiła 0,63, po roku leczenia obniżyła się do 0,58. Wnioski: 1. U dzieci z ZD występuje odmienność w zakresie struktury i funkcji, widoczna w wartości funkcji ZPPR. 2. Ocena poziomu patologii rozwojowej różnicuje badane grupy dzieci, przy czym najwyższa wartość funkcji diagnostycznej Z jest charakterystyczna dla grupy dzieci z ZD i istotnie obniża się po roku stymulacji rozwoju i terapii według WMU.
