Abstract

This paper presents a review of research focusing on 'Learning Outside the Classroom' (LOtC). We provide a distillation of international research in this field that identifies how future investigations could be focused and move the discipline forward. As a consequence of the breadth of our study, we feel our findings will have applications in educational settings across the globe. What we discover is a significant bias towards types of learning that largely cannot be measured, and that only a minority of published research in our review pays the level of attention to theoretical and philosophical foundations found in most other educational research.

Partial verso of map showing stamp of former map owner Walter Vielbaum., Notes provided by map owner Emiliano Echeverria: "The Market Street “Path of Gold” Pole Placement Map: As many know, the United Railroads of San Francisco was the largest mass-transit operation in the city. Also well known is the bribery that took place right after the fire that enabled streetcar operation on Market Street after many years of public opposition. Not so well known is the fact that part of the franchise that enabled the streetcars on Market Street also required that United Railroads provide ornamental street lighting for Market Street from the poles needed to support the overhead plant. This also provided that URR pay for the power for the lighting as well. By 1910 United Railroads began to fulfill that requirement as the pressure of line reconstruction passed. That year, URR commissioned ----- to design the sculpted bases that would adorn these poles, designed as halves bolted together around the bases of the poles, with a bright standard on the top. In 1917, URR installed the three-lantern standards identical to the ones in use today. In 1918, the City and County of San Francisco, under the direction of Michael Maurice O’Shaugnessy, Chief Engineer of the City’s Public Works Department commissioned this map to locate precisely every pole on Market Street that was used for this purpose. This map also served to document compliance with the mandate of the 1906 franchise. This copy of the map was presented to William von Phul, General Manager of United Railroads from the City. This map’s locations applied until 1966, when construction of BART began and gradually, the original locations were altered due to construction. The newer (current) locations of the new poles also differ from this map, as well. (This map is and original) from URR files and(was) never mass produced in any form. Abstract

Contemporary subjection, notes Maurizio Lazzarato, has two very different dimensions, subjectivation (our production as subjects) and machinic enslavement (the way in which sub- and supra-individual human elements are put to work as cogs in complex machineries that are never simply technical machines). Although the latter form of subjection is increasingly dominant, critical theory almost always focuses on the former. With its intrinsically machinic functioning, cinema seems ideally placed to open up our machinic subjection to scrutiny. Can it become the Vertovian self-consciousness of a collective, machinic subject, or is it simply condemned to anticipate and embody the way in which consumer capitalism puts the human psyche and affectivity to work? Suggesting that such a polarised set of alternatives is too schematic, this article probes four contemporary, and very dissimilar, European films, sounding out their capacity to bring the machinic into view and make it available for self-reflexive engagement. The article draws its main theoretical inspiration from the work of contemporary social theorist, Maurizio Lazzarato, but also draws on other thinkers where relevant. The films discussed are Ma part du gâteau (Klapisch, 2011), Abenland (Geyrhalter, 2011), Lucy (Besson, 2014) and Vers Madrid: the Burning Bright (George, 2012).

Abstract

Background and objectives Infections contribute to patient morbidity and mortality in glomerular disease. We sought to describe the incidence of, and identify risk factors for, infection-related acute care events among Cure Glomerulonephropathy Network (CureGN) study participants. Design, setting, participants, & measurements CureGN is a prospective, multicenter, cohort study of children and adults with biopsy sample–proven minimal change disease, FSGS, membranous nephropathy, or IgA nephropathy/vasculitis. Risk factors for time to first infection-related acute care events (hospitalization or emergency department visit) were identified using multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression. Results Of 1741 participants (43%female, 41%,18 years, 68%White), 163 (9%) experienced infection-related acute care events over a median follow-up of 17months (interquartile range, 9–26months).Unadjusted incidence rates of infection-related acute care events were 13.2 and 6.2 events per 100 person-years among pediatric and adult participants, respectively. Among participants with versus without corticosteroid exposure at enrollment, unadjusted incidence rates were 50.6 and 28.6 per 100 person-years, respectively, during the first year of follow-up (adjusted hazard ratio for time to first infection, 1.31; 95% CI, 0.89 to 1.93), and 4.1 and 1.1 per 100 person-years, respectively, after 1 year of follow-up (hazard ratio, 2.99; 95%CI, 1.54 to 5.79). Hypoalbuminemia combined with nephrotic-range proteinuria (serum albumin #2.5 g/dl and urinary protein-creatinine ratio.3.5 mg/mg), compared with serumalbumin.2.5 g/dl and urinary protein-creatinine ratio#3.5 mg/mg, was associated with higher risk of time to first infection (adjusted hazard ratio, 2.49; 95% CI, 1.51 to 4.12). Conclusions Among CureGN participants, infection-related acute care events were common and associated with younger age, corticosteroid exposure, and hypoalbuminemia with proteinuria.

Abstract

Contemporary French and Francophone Belgian cinema has produced a wave of worker suicides that outdoes even Jean Gabin’s repeated cinematic deaths of the later 1930s. This article discusses its significance in the context of neo-liberalism and develops an analytical toolkit for making sense of it, taking its main theoretical inspirations from Slavoj Žižek’s theorisation of violence and Carl Cederstrom and Peter Fleming’s analysis of worker suicide, but also drawing on Michel Foucault’s account of parrhesia as the scandalous living of another life in this life. The article suggests that most of the films considered use the apparently subjective violence of worker suicide to force the unseen violences of neo-liberal labour into view, while only a few move beyond this denunciatory position to probe both what a parrhesiastic exit from neo-liberal labour, a killing of the worker-in-the-self, might look like and all that prevents it.

Abstract

Thrombocytopenia, an abnormal reduction of platelets (clotting agents) in the blood, is a complication of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) infection reported to affect between 3 and 9 percent of patients. It has been noted that occasionally patients who receive zidovudine show an improvement in their thrombocytopenia. A study was undertaken in Canada in which 74 volunteers, male homosexuals infected with HIV, were treated with increasing doses of zidovudine. They were first observed for three weeks and then were given 600 mg of zidovudine daily for 18 weeks, followed by 900 mg for nine weeks, and then 1,200 mg for another nine weeks. The drug was discontinued for a period of six weeks and then was restarted at 1,200 mg/day for 18 weeks. The patients were evaluated for blood platelet counts every three weeks. Patients were classified as thrombocytopenic (12 patients) or normal (57 patients), depending upon the level of their initial platelet count. The results indicated that zidovudine increased the platelet count in all patients regardless of their initial platelet count. In the normal group, this increase was small and transient; however, in the thrombocytopenic group the increase in platelet count was greater and longer lasting. The effect was not related to dose, within the dose range studied. Based upon the results of this study, patients with thrombocytopenia associated with HIV infection may benefit from treatment with zidovudine, and HIV-associated thrombocytopenia can be viewed as a relative indication for starting zidovudine treatment.
