8. Heavy mineral assemblages of the De Long Trough and southern Lomonosov Ridge glacigenic deposits:implications for the East Siberian Ice Sheet extent

Abstract

The Arctic’s glacial history has classically been interpreted from marine records in terms of the fluctuations of the Eurasian and North American ice sheets. However, the extent and timing of the East Siberian Ice Sheet (ESIS) have remained uncertain. A recently discovered glacially scoured cross-shelf trough extending to the edge of the continental shelf north of the De Long Islands has provided additional evidence that glacial ice existed on parts of the East Siberian Sea (ESS) during previous glacial periods MIS 6 and 4. This study concentrates on defining the heavy mineral signature of glacigenic deposits from the East Siberian continental margin which were collected during the 2014 SWERUS-C3 expedition. The cores studied are 20-GC1 from the East Siberian shelf, 23-GC1 and 24-GC1 from the De Long Trough (DLT), and 29-GC1 from the southern Lomonosov Ridge (LR). Heavy mineral assemblages were used to identify prominent parent rocks in hinterland and other sediment source areas. The parent rock areas include major eastern Siberian geological provinces such as the Omolon massif, the Chukotka fold belt, the Verkhoyansk fold belt, and possibly the Okhotsk–Chukotka volcanic belt. The primary riverine sources for the ESS sediments are the Indigirka and Kolyma rivers, the material of which was glacially eroded and re-deposited in the DLT. The higher abundances of amphiboles in the heavy mineral assemblages may indicate ESS paleovalley of the Indigirka River as a major pathway of sediments, while the Kolyma River paleovalley pathway relates to a higher share of pyroxenes and epidote. The mineralogical signature in the DLT diamicts, consisting predominantly of amphiboles and pyroxenes with a minor content of garnet and epidote, shows clear delivery from the eastern part of the ESIS. Abstract

Record-high air temperatures were observed over Greenland in the summer of 2019 and melting of the northern Greenland Ice Sheet was particularly extensive. Here we show, through direct measurements, that near surface ocean temperatures in Sherard Osborn Fjord, northern Greenland, reached 4 °C in August 2019, while in the neighboring Petermann Fjord, they never exceeded 0 °C. We show that this disparity in temperature between the two fjords occurred because thick multi-year sea ice at the entrance of Sherard Osborn Fjord trapped the surface waters inside the fjord, which led to the formation of a warm and fresh surface layer. These results suggest that the presence of multi-year sea ice increases the sensitivity of Greenland fjords abutting the Arctic Ocean to climate warming, with potential consequences for the long-term stability of the northern sector of the Greenland Ice Sheet.

18. Arctic Continental Margin Sediments as Possible Fe and Mn Sources to Seawater as Sea Ice Retreats: Insights From the Eurasian Margin

Abstract

Continental margins are hot spots for iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) cycling. In the Arctic Ocean, these depositional systems are experiencing rapid changes that could significantly impact biogeochemical cycling. In this study, we investigate whether continental margin sediments north of Svalbard represent a source or sink of Fe and Mn to the water column and how climate change might alter these biogeochemical cycles. Our results highlight that sediments on the Yermak Plateau and Sofia Basin exhibit accumulations of Fe and Mn phases compared to average shale. Conversely, sediments from the Barents Sea slope exhibit lower enrichments of Fe and Mn compared to average shale, with the exception of enriched, near‐surface sediment layers. Pore waters from these slope sites provide evidence for Fe and Mn reduction and diffusion of Fe and Mn into near surface sediments, which are susceptible to physical or biogeochemical remobilization. These regional patterns are best explained by the spatial distribution of sea ice coverage and labile organic carbon fluxes to the seafloor. As sea ice continues to retreat and the Yermak Plateau becomes seasonally ice‐free, productivity is expected to increase, which would increase the flux of carbon to the sediments, thereby increasing oxidant demand, and the reduction of Fe and Mn mineral phases. Our results suggest that as sea ice continues to retreat, the Yermak Plateau and other Arctic continental margins could become sources of Fe and Mn to Arctic bottom waters.

Abstract

An amorphous-silicon (a-Si) thin-film transistor (TFT) process with a 180 degree Celsius maximum temperature is developed on both novel clear polymer and glass substrates by using plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition. Results reveal that amorphous TFTs on clear plastic serve as an attractive route to active-matrix organic light-emitting displays on clear flexible plastic substrates.
