This thesis explores the performance of Gaelic bardic poetry and accompanying harp music in a re-imagined, contemporary traditional harping context. Offering unique insights and contributions which highlight the potential of this practice as a contemporary art form, this research explores the parameters of the connection between Gaelic bardic poetry and harp accompaniments through the medium of the harper and reciter in collaborative practice. Chapter One introduces the elite historical performance practice of Gaelic bardic poetry and harp music, and the roles of the poet and harper throughout the bardic era. Chapter Two provides an overview of this study's chaotic journey within arts practice research, and the resulting practice-led methodology adopted as a means to gain insight into the functioning role of the harper within this re-imagined, contemporary performance practice. Placing myself in the role of the harper as practitioner has changed both my perception and approach to performance, whilst also drawing attention to this novel mode of practice previously unexplored within contemporary Irish traditional harp performance. Chapters Three to Eight underline key connections between the recitation of Gaelic bardic poetry and accompanying harp music, discovered through the creation of harp accompaniments inspired by historical descriptions of this performance practice, characteristics of historical harp music and Gaelic bardic poetry itself. Chapter Nine concludes this study, which builds upon current scholarship relating to bardic performance practice, arguing the instinctive, symbiotic collaboration between harper and reciter within the creative process of practice, and revealing parameters which guide the unique intertwining of the spoken word and accompanying harp music in contemporary re-imagination.

- Abstract
Sepsis is defined as dysregulated host response to infection that leads to life-threatening organ dysfunction. Biomarkers characterising the dysregulated host response in sepsis are lacking. We aimed to develop host gene expression signatures to predict organ dysfunction in children with bacterial or viral infection.

The transition from the regimented environment of military service to a less structured college lifestyle can be stressful for student veterans with and without disabilities, which highlights the importance of exploring protective person-environmental contextual factors that can help student veterans with and without disabilities manage their stress effectively, leading to enhanced well-being. The purpose of this cross-sectional correlational design study was to examine the role of positive person-environment contextual factors, including hope, resilience, core self-evaluations, and social support, to reduce the influence of perceived stress on the subjective well-being (SWB) of student veterans with and without disabilities. The sample consisted of 205 student veterans (71.7% males; 80.5% White; M
age = 29.32; 39% with service-connected disability). Findings suggested that core self-evaluations and social support partially mediated the relationship between perceived stress and SWB in student veterans with and without disabilities. Implications for clinicians, university counselors, and university staff are also discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

14. Five-Minutes of Mindfulness: Utilizing Guided Meditation to Supplement ADHD Treatment Plans in Adolescents
- Author

O'Neill, Lauren Louise
- Abstract
Background: ADHD can impair functioning in multiple areas (i.e., social relationships and academic/work productivity); pharmacological, behavioral, or combination treatment is recommended given its association with long-term adverse outcomes. Due to an individual’s varying experience with a treatment’s benefits or side-effects, a multitude of options should be available. One newer behavioral treatment option is mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs).Objectives: The objectives of this project were to pilot implementation of an MBI as a supplemental treatment in patients 12 to 19 years old with ADHD at a pediatric behavioral health clinic and to observe a decrease in their ADHD symptom severity and insomnia severity. Methods: The nurse practitioners and student investigator implemented the MBI during an office visit. Participants were educated about MBIs then instructed to practice a five-minute guided meditation daily for four weeks. Impact was measured by comparing pre- and post-intervention NICHQ Vanderbilt Symptom Scale Scores and Pediatric Insomnia Severity Index (PISI) scores along with analyzing patient evaluation feedback. Knowledge for future project sustainability and expansion was generated from provider, patient, and family feedback. Results: There was an observed 41% decrease in Vanderbilt total symptom scores, 60% decrease in hyperactivity/impulsivity symptoms, and 27% decrease in inattentive symptoms. The PISI scores decreased by 53%, indicating a positive impact on sleep quality and habits. Participants largely believed the guided meditation had a positive impact on stress, relationships, and everyday life; all planned on continuing to use the guided meditation. The impact of the global COVID19 pandemic, an unexpected high rate of refusal or resistance to participation, the high percentage of telehealth virtual visits, and a failure to complete the intervention all contributed to a smaller than anticipated sample size (n = 3). Conclusion: Despite the unexpectedly small sample size, the results demonstrate that using an MBI, such as a guided meditation, as a treatment supplement can positively impact ADHD symptoms and sleep; patients also perceive a positive effect on stress, relationships, and everyday life. This project also identified potential barriers and facilitators to widescale MBI implementation with this population; this knowledge will inform future efforts of sustainability and expansion.

EUCLIDS consortium., Non-coding genetic variants play an important role in driving susceptibility to complex diseases but their characterization remains challenging. Here, we employed a novel approach to interrogate the genetic risk of such polymorphisms in a more systematic way by targeting specific regulatory regions relevant for the phenotype studied. We applied this method to meningococcal disease susceptibility, using the DNA binding pattern of RELA – a NF-kB subunit, master regulator of the response to infection – under bacterial stimuli in nasopharyngeal epithelial cells. We designed a custom panel to cover these RELA binding sites and used it for targeted sequencing in cases and controls. Variant calling and association analysis were performed followed by validation of candidate polymorphisms by genotyping in three independent cohorts. We identified two new polymorphisms, rs4823231 and rs11913168, showing signs of association with meningococcal disease susceptibility. In addition, using our genomic data as well as publicly available resources, we found evidences for these SNPs to have potential regulatory effects on ATXN10 and LIF genes respectively. The variants and related candidate genes are relevant for infectious diseases and may have important contribution for meningococcal disease pathology. Finally, we described a novel genetic association approach that could be applied to other phenotypes., This work has been partially funded by the European Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP7) under EUCLIDS Grant Agreement No. 279185. EUCLIDS consortium., Fever is the most common reason that children present to Emergency Departments. Clinical signs and symptoms suggestive of bacterial infection are often non-specific, and there is no definitive test for the accurate diagnosis of infection. The ‘omics’ approaches to identifying biomarkers from the host-response to bacterial infection are promising. In this study, lipidomic analysis was carried out with plasma samples obtained from febrile children with confirmed bacterial infection (n = 20) and confirmed viral infection (n = 20). We show for the first time that bacterial and viral infection produces distinct profile in the host lipidome. Some species of glycerophosphoinositol, sphingomyelin, lysophosphatidylcholine and cholesterol sulfate were higher in the confirmed virus infected group, while some species of fatty acids, glycerophosphocholine, glycerophosphoserine, lactosylceramide and bilirubin were lower in the confirmed virus infected group when compared with confirmed bacterial infected group. A combination of three lipids achieved an area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve of 0.911 (95% CI 0.81 to 0.98). This pilot study demonstrates the potential of metabolic biomarkers to assist clinicians in distinguishing bacterial from viral infection in febrile children, to facilitate effective clinical management and to the limit inappropriate use of antibiotics., This work was partially supported by the European Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP7) under EUCLIDS Grant Agreement no. 279185. - Abstract
The liquid structure of three common ionic liquids (ILs) was investigated by neutron scattering for the first time. The ILs were based on the bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide anion, abbreviated in the literature as [NTf2]−or [TFSI]−, and on the following cations: 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium, [C2mim]+; 1-decyl-3-methylimidazolium, [C10mim]+; and trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium, [P666,14]+. Comparative analysis of the three ILs confirmed increased size of nonpolar nanodomains with increasing bulk of alkyl chains. It also sheds light on the cation–anion interactions, providing experimental insight into strength, directionality, and angle of hydrogen bonds between protons on the imidazolium ring, as well as H–C–P protons in [P666,14]+, to oxygen and nitrogen atoms in the [NTf2]−. The new Dissolve data analysis package enabled, for the first time, the analysis of neutron scattering data of ILs with long alkyl chains, in particular, of [P666,14][NTf2]. Results generated with Dissolve were validated by comparing outputs from three different models, starting from three different sets of cation charges, for each of the three ILs, which gave convergent outcomes. Finally, a modified method for the synthesis of perdeuterated [P666,14][NTf2] has been reported, with the aim of reporting a complete set of synthetic and data processing approaches, laying robust foundations that enable the study of the phosphonium ILs family by neutron scattering.

33. The representation of Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift as postfeminist celebrity musicians: Image, Text and Audiences

- Abstract
It is hard to escape the phenomenal reach of contemporary pop artists. Their songs are cycled across commercial radio stations, their music videos occupy our screens and we can mostly likely see the artist perform live in our nearest city. This thesis examines two of contemporary pop music’s most well-known and successful artists, Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift, in terms of their selfpresentation, media representation and audience engagement. Billboard rated Cyrus and Swift in the top 10 artists of 2014 (Billboard 2014). Swift’s most recent album, 1989 (2014), “topped iTunes sales charts in over 95 countries on its release and has sold over 8.6 million copies worldwide to date” (IFPI 2015). Cyrus’ total album sales stand at 15.9 million, including her work as “Hannah Montana” (Caulfield 2014). This thesis analyses the artists as postfeminist celebrity musicians who present many contradictions in their identities via the assorted channels through which their persona is expressed. Both musicians display the notion of ‘slippage’ (Genz and Brabon 2009) in relation to their persona, behaviour and creative content; their identities constantly shift and change. I introduce the notion of the postfeminist celebrity musician as a figure that identifies as a feminist, however displays certain behaviours that contest traditional feminist ideals. This thesis analyses Cyrus and Swift as postfeminist celebrity musicians in three main ways. Firstly, a selection of the artists’ music videos released between 2009 and 2015 are examined with regards to the artists’ choices concerning their image, lyrics and themes of the songs. This thesis also explores the key transitions and various stages of both artists’ creative careers. Secondly, the mediated identities of Cyrus and Swift are considered through an analysis of selected magazine feature articles published between 2013 and 2015. The feature articles gauge the artists’ presentation in popular print media texts as public feminists and c

36. Expanding the Impact of Peer Networks: Pathways to Turning Points

- Abstract
Scholars highlight the importance of both adolescent peers and prosocial life events in explanations of continuity and change in deviant behavior. Thus far, research has evaluated the pathway to desistance by focusing on what happens to one's trajectory after experiencing prosocial adult activities, including the role of adulthood friendships. This research shifts the focus to an earlier stage of the process and combines these two research realms to investigate the influence of one's adolescent peer network on shaping the pathway to marriage, educational achievement, and job stability. Using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health allows this investigation to evaluate the level of deviance within one's peer group as well as the conditioning effect of network characteristics (e.g. density, centrality, popularity, attachment, and involvement) on peer deviance, while controlling for background characteristics. This research finds that the level of deviance in a peer network is particularly detrimental for educational attainment. Deviant peers also play a significant role in shaping educational expectations. The results do not, however, find peers to be influential for marriage and employment outcomes. The analyses show minimal support for the conditioning effect of network characteristics and highlight the importance of considering background characteristics in conjunction with these more dynamic influences. Lastly, the results draw attention the fact that these processes do not operate uniformly and that the pathways to prosocial adult outcomes sometimes vary by gender and race. Theoretical and policy implications are also discussed.

38. Prosecutors Offering Charge Reductions: Relying on Facts or Stereotypes?

- Abstract
This research expands attribution theory and focal concerns perspective, usually applied to judicial decision making, to address prosecutorial charging decisions within the Federal Court System. This study investigates whether the extralegal factors of age, gender, race, and ethnicity permeate the decision of prosecutors to offer charge reductions. This research seeks to uncover differential processing through comparisons across sub-samples of individuals in order to see if the influences of these extralegal factors vary through interactions with both legal and extralegal factors. The analyses are conducted on a binary dependent variable representing the decision to offer a reduction and a continuous dependent variable reflecting the magnitude of the charge change. The results find support for differential processing based on extralegal variables, and support for the importance of some interactions. This research lends credence to the use of attribution theory and focal concerns for understanding prosecutorial charging decisions.

The deviant peer group remains one of the strongest and most consistent correlates of delinquency across a host of methodological specifications. Recent research has moved past investigations of the simple presence or abscence of such peers and has shifted focus to various characteristics of the delinquent peer group. For example, Haynie (2001) adopted a network perspective and found that structural characteristics (e.g., density, centrality, and popularity) conditioned the impact of deviant peers on delinquency. Unfortunately, these recent investigations have ignored the potential role of self-control. Using longitudinal data on a sample of nationally representative adolescents, this investigation addresses whether the structure of delinquent peer networks still "matters" in the context of self-control. In the end, it will provide a commentary on the potential theoretical compatibility - or lack thereof - of learning and control theories when considering the facets of delinquent social networks in criminology. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Situational crime prevention (SCP) techniques have proven successful in a variety of spheres. Even so, one setting that has increasingly relied on such tactics to control crime, namely schools, has not been subject to much evaluation. Given the pervasiveness of this trend, as well as the associated costs, this is a clear void in need of research. Using a cross-sectional, nationally representative sample of schools, this paper investigates the efficacy of a variety of SCP tactics with regard to numerous crime outcomes, net of statistical controls. The findings hold implications for both theory and policy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
