We analyze the \ovi\ content and kinematics for 126 {\hi}-selected absorbers at $0.14 \lesssim z \lesssim 0.73$ for which the metallicities of their cool photoionized phase have been determined. We separate the absorbers into 100 strong {\lya} forest systems (SLFSs with $15 \la$\,{\colden}\,$< 16.2$) and 26 partial Lyman Limit systems (pLLSs with $16.2\le$\,{\colden}\,$\le 17.2$). The sample is drawn from the COS CGM Compendium (CCC) and has \ovi\ coverage in $\sn \geq 8$ {\it HST}/COS G130M/G160M QSO spectra, yielding a $2\sigma$ completeness level of {\coldenovi}$\,\geq 13.6$. The \ovi\ detection rates differ substantially between low-metallicity (LM; {\xh} $\leq -1.4$) and high-metallicity (HM; {\xh} $> -1.4$) SLFSs, with 20\% and 60\% detection rates, respectively. The \ovi\ detection frequency for the HM and LM pLLSs is, however, similar at $\sim$60\%. The SLFSs and pLLSs without detected \ovi\ are consistent with the absorbing gas being in a single phase, while those with \ovi\ trace multiphase gas. We show that the \ovi\ velocity widths and column densities have different distributions in LM and HM gas. We find a strong correlation between \ovi\ column density and metallicity. The strongest (\coldenovi$\,\ga 14$) and broadest {\ovi} absorbers are nearly always associated with HM absorbers, while weaker \ovi\ absorbers are found in both LM and HM absorbers. From comparisons with galaxy-selected and blind \ovi\ surveys, we conclude absorbers with \coldenovi$\,\ga 14$ most likely arise in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of star-forming galaxies. We report the discovery of a candidate dual QSO at z=1.889, a redshift that is in the era known as "cosmic noon" where most of the Universe's black hole and stellar mass growth occurred. The source was identified in Hubble Space Telescope WFC3/IR images of a dust-reddened QSO that showed two closely-separated point sources at a projected distance of 0.26", or 2.2 kpc. This red QSO was targeted for imaging to explore whether red QSOs are hosted by merging galaxies. We subsequently obtained a spatially-resolved STIS spectrum of the system, covering the visible spectral range, and verifying the presence of two distinct QSO components. We also obtained high-resolution radio continuum observations with the VLBA at 1.4 GHz (21-cm L band) and found two sources coincident with the optical positions. The sources have similar black hole masses, bolometric luminosities, and radio loudness parameters. However, their colors and reddenings differ significantly. The redder QSO has a higher Eddington ratio, consistent with previous findings. We consider the possibility of gravitational lensing and and find that it would require extreme and unlikely conditions. If confirmed as a bona-fide dual QSO, this system would link dust-reddening to galaxy and supermassive black hole mergers, opening up a new population in which to search for samples of dual AGN., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

We combine datasets from the CGM$^{2}$ and CASBaH surveys to model a transition point, $R_{\rm cross}$, between circumgalactic and intergalactic media (CGM and IGM, respectively). In total, our data consist of 7244 galaxies at z < 0.5 with precisely measured spectroscopic redshifts, all having impact parameters of 0.01 - 20 comoving Mpc from 28 QSO sightlines with high-resolution UV spectra that cover H I Ly$\alpha$. Our best-fitting model is an exclusionary two-component model that combines a 3D absorber-galaxy cross correlation function with a simple Gaussian profile at inner radii to represent the CGM. By design, this model gives rise to a determination of $R_{\rm cross}$ as a function of galaxy stellar mass, which can be interpreted as the boundary between the CGM and IGM. For galaxies with $10^8 \leq M_{\star}/M_{\odot} \leq 10^{10.5}$, we find that $R_{\rm cross}(M_{\star}) \approx 2 \pm 0.6 R_{\rm vir}$. Additionally, we find excellent agreement between $R_{\rm cross}(M_{\star})$ and the theoretically-determined splashback radius for galaxies in this mass range. Overall, our results favor models of galaxy evolution at z < 0.5 that distribute $T \approx 10^{4}$K gas to distances beyond the virial radius., Comment: Submitted to ApJ, 17 pages, 8 figures

This study addresses how the incidence rate of strong O VI absorbers in a galaxy's circumgalactic medium (CGM) depends on galaxy mass and, independently, on the amount of star formation in the galaxy. We use HST/COS absorption spectroscopy of quasars to measure O VI absorption within 400 projected kpc and 300 km s$^{-1}$ of 52 $M_{*}\sim 10^{10}$ $M_\odot$ galaxies. The galaxies have redshifts $0.12

We present the discovery of a gravitationally lensed dust-reddened QSO at z = 2.517, identified in a survey for QSOs by infrared selection. Hubble Space Telescope imaging reveals a quadruply lensed system in a cusp configuration, with a maximum image separation of ~1.8\arcsec. We find that compared to the central image of the cusp, the neighboring brightest image is anomalous by a factor of ~ 7 - 10, which is the largest flux anomaly measured to date in a lensed QSO. Incorporating high-resolution Jansky Very Large Array radio imaging and sub-mm imaging with the Atacama Large (sub-)Millimetre Array, we conclude that a low-mass perturber is the most likely explanation for the anomaly. The optical through near-infrared spectrum reveals that the QSO is moderately reddened with E(B - V) = 0.7 - 0.9. We see an upturn in the ultraviolet spectrum due to ~ 1% of the intrinsic emission being leaked back into the line of sight, which suggests that the reddening is intrinsic and not due to the lens. The QSO may have an Eddington ratio as high as L/L_Edd ~ 0.2. Consistent with previous red QSO samples, this source exhibits outflows in its spectrum as well as morphological properties suggestive of it being in a merger-driven transitional phase. We find a host-galaxy stellar mass of log M_*/M_Sun = 11.4, which is higher than the local M_BH vs. M_* relation, but consistent with other high redshift QSOs. We use medium-resolution Keck/Echellette Spectrograph and Imager spectroscopy of bright quasars to study cool gas traced by CaII 3934,3969 and NaI 5891,5897 absorption in the interstellar/circumgalactic media of 21 foreground star-forming galaxies at redshifts 0.03 < z < 0.20 with stellar masses 7.4 < log M_*/M_sun < 10.6. The quasar-galaxy pairs were drawn from a unique sample of Sloan Digital Sky Survey quasar spectra with intervening nebular emission, and thus have exceptionally close impact parameters (R_perp < 13 kpc). The strength of this line emission implies that the galaxies' star formation rates (SFRs) span a broad range, with several lying well above the star-forming sequence. We use Voigt profile modeling to derive column densities and component velocities for each absorber, finding that column densities N(CaII) > 10^12.5 cm^-2 (N(NaI) > 10^12.0 cm^-2) occur with an incidence f_C(CaII) = 0.63^+0.10_-0.11 (f_C(NaI) = 0.57^+0.10_-0.11). We find no evidence for a dependence of f_C or the rest-frame equivalent widths W_r(CaII K) or W_r(NaI 5891) on R_perp or M_*. Instead, W_r(CaII K) is correlated with local SFR at >3sigma significance, suggesting that CaII traces star formation-driven outflows. While most of the absorbers have velocities within +/-50 km/s of the host redshift, their velocity widths (characterized by Delta v_90) are universally 30-177 km/s larger than that implied by tilted-ring modeling of the velocities of interstellar material. These kinematics must trace galactic fountain flows and demonstrate that they persist at R_perp > 5 kpc. Finally, we assess the relationship between dust reddening and W_r(CaII K) (W_r(NaI 5891)), finding that 33% (24%) of the absorbers are inconsistent with the best-fit Milky Way E(B-V)-W_r relations at >3sigma significance., Comment: 38 pages, 16 figures, 4 tables. The circumgalactic medium (CGM) plays a vital role in the formation and evolution of galaxies, acting as a lifeline between galaxies and the surrounding intergalactic medium (IGM). In this study we leverage a unique sample of quasar pairs to investigate the properties of the CGM with absorption line tomography. We present a new sample of medium resolution Keck/ESI, Magellan/MagE, and VLT/XSHOOTER spectra of 29 quasar pairs at redshift $2 < z < 3$. We supplement the sample with additional spectra of 32 pairs from the literature, creating a catalog of 61 quasar pairs with angular separations between 1.7" and 132.9" and projected physical separations ($r_\perp$) between 14 kpc and 887 kpc. We construct a catalog of 906 metal-line absorption doublets of C IV ($\lambda\lambda 1548, 1550$) with equivalent widths ranging from 6 m{\AA} $\leq W_{r, 1550} \leq 2053$ m{\AA}. The best fit linear model to the log-space equivalent width frequency distribution ($\log f(W_r) = m\log(W_{r}) + b$) of the sample yields coefficients of $m=-1.44\pm0.16$ and $b=-0.43\pm0.16$. To constrain the projected extent of C IV, we calculate the transverse autocorrelation function. The flattening of the autocorrelation function at low $r_\perp$ provides a lower limit for the coherence length of the metal enriched CGM - on the order of 200 $h^{-1}$ comoving kpc. We report the discovery of three new "near-pristine" Lyman Limit Systems (LLSs), with metallicities ~1/1000 solar, at redshifts 2.6, 3.8 and 4.0, with a targeted survey at the Keck Observatory. High resolution echelle spectra of eight candidates yielded precise column densities of hydrogen and weak, but clearly detected, metal lines in seven LLSs; we previously reported the one remaining, apparently metal-free LLS, to have metallicity <1/10000 solar. Robust photoionisation modelling provides metallicities [Si/H] = -3.05 to -2.94, with 0.26 dex uncertainties (95% confidence) for three LLSs, and [Si/H] >~ -2.5 for the remaining four. Previous simulations suggest that near-pristine LLSs could be the remnants of PopIII supernovae, so comparing their detailed metal abundances with nucleosynthetic yields from supernovae models is an important goal. Unfortunately, at most two different metals were detected in each new system, despite their neutral hydrogen column densities (10^{19.2-19.4} cm^{-2}) being two orders of magnitude larger than the two previous, serendipitously discovered near-pristine LLSs. Nevertheless, the success of this first targeted survey for near-pristine systems demonstrates the prospect that a much larger, future survey could identify clear observational signatures of PopIII stars. Reservoirs of dense atomic gas (primarily hydrogen), contain approximately 90 percent of the neutral gas at a redshift of 3, and contribute to 2-3 percent of the total baryons in the Universe. These damped Lyman-${\alpha}$ systems (so called because they absorb Lyman-${\alpha}$ photons from within and from background sources) have been studied for decades, but only through absorption lines present in the spectra of background quasars and gamma-ray bursts. Such pencil beams do not constrain the physical extent of the systems. Here, we report integral-field spectroscopy of a bright, gravitationally lensed galaxy at a redshift of 2.7 with two foreground damped Lyman-${\alpha}$ systems. These systems are $>$ 238 $kpc^2$ in extent, with column densities of neutral hydrogen varying by more than an order of magnitude on $<$ 3 kpc-scales. The bimodal absorption system imaging campaign (BASIC) aims to characterize the galaxy environments of a sample of 36 HI-selected partial Lyman limit systems (pLLSs) and Lyman limit systems (LLSs) in 23 QSO fields at $z \lesssim 1$. These pLLSs/LLSs provide a unique sample of absorbers with unbiased and well-constrained metallicities, allowing us to explore the origins of metal-rich and low-metallicity circumgalactic medium (CGM) at $z<1$. Here we present Keck/KCWI and VLT/MUSE observations of 11 of these QSO fields (19 pLLSs) that we combine with HST/ACS imaging to identify and characterize the absorber-associated galaxies. We find 23 unique absorber-associated galaxies, with an average of one associated galaxy per absorber. For seven absorbers, all with $<10\%$ solar metallicities, we find no associated galaxies with $\log M_\star \gtrsim 9.0$ within $\rho/R_{vir}$ and $|\Delta v|/v_{esc} \le$ 1.5 with respect to the absorber. We do not find any strong correlations between the metallicities or HI column densities of the gas and most of the galaxy properties, except for the stellar mass of the galaxies: the low-metallicity ([X/H] $\le -1.4$) systems have a probability of $0.39^{+0.16}_{-0.15}$ for having a host galaxy with $\log M_\star \ge 9.0$ within $\rho/R_{vir} \le 1.5$, while the higher metallicity absorbers have a probability of $0.78^{+0.10}_{-0.13}$. This implies metal-enriched pLLSs/LLSs at $z<1$ are typically associated with the CGM of galaxies with $\log M_\star > 9.0$, whereas low-metallicity pLLSs/LLSs are found in more diverse locations, with one population arising in the CGM of galaxies and another more broadly distributed in overdense regions of the universe. Using absorbers not associated with galaxies, we estimate the unweighted geometric mean metallicity of the intergalactic medium to be [X/H] $\lesssim -2.1$ at $z<1$, which is lower than previously estimated., Comment: Key figures: 13 and 18. Star-forming galaxies are the sources likely to have reionized the universe. As we cannot observe them directly due to the opacity of the intergalactic medium at $z\gtrsim5$, we study $z\sim3\text{--}5$ galaxies as proxies to place observational constraints on cosmic reionization. Using new deep \textit{Hubble Space Telescope} rest-frame UV F336W and F435W imaging (30-orbit, $\sim40$~arcmin$^2$, $\sim29\text{--}30$~mag depth at 5$\sigma$), we attempt to identify a sample of Lyman continuum galaxies (LCGs). These are individual sources that emit ionizing flux below the Lyman break ($<912~\text{\AA}$). This population would allow us to constrain cosmic reionization parameters such as the number density and escape fraction ($f_{\rm esc}$) of ionizing sources. We compile a comprehensive parent sample that does not rely on the Lyman-break technique for redshifts. We present three new spectroscopic candidates at $z\sim3.7\text{--}4.4$, and 32 new photometric candidates. The high-resolution multi-band HST imaging and new Keck/Low Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (LRIS) redshifts make these promising spectroscopic LCG candidates. Using both a traditional and probabilistic approach, we find the most likely $f_{\rm esc}$ values for the three spectroscopic LCG candidates are $>100\%$, and therefore not physical. We are unable to confirm the true nature of these sources with the best available imaging and direct blue Keck/LRIS spectroscopy. Quasar absorption systems encode a wealth of information about the abundances, ionization structure, and physical conditions in intergalactic and circumgalactic media. Simple (often single-phase) photoionization models are frequently used to decode such data. Using five discrete absorbers from the COS Absorption Survey of Baryon Harbors (CASBaH) that exhibit a wide range of detected ions (e.g., Mg II, S II--S VI, O II--O VI, Ne VIII), we show several examples where single-phase ionization models cannot reproduce the full set of measured column densities. To explore models that can self-consistently explain the measurements and kinematic alignment of disparate ions, we develop a Bayesian multiphase ionization modeling framework that characterizes discrete phases by their unique physical conditions and also investigates variations in the shape of the UV flux field, metallicity, and relative abundances. Our models require at least two (but favor three) distinct ionization phases ranging from $T \approx 10^{4}$ K photoionized gas to warm-hot phases at $T \lesssim 10^{5.8}$ K. For some ions, an apparently single absorption "component" includes contributions from more than one phase, and up to 30% of the H I is not from the lowest ionization phase. If we assume that all of the phases are photoionized, we cannot find solutions in thermal pressure equilibrium. By introducing hotter, collisionally ionized phases, however, we can achieve balanced pressures. The best models indicate moderate metallicities, often with sub-solar N/$\alpha$, and, in two cases, ionizing flux fields that are softer and brighter than the fiducial Haardt & Madau UV background model., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present and make publicly available the third data release (DR3) of the Keck Observatory Database of Ionized Absorption toward Quasars (KODIAQ) survey. KODIAQ DR3 consists of a fully-reduced sample of 727 quasars at 0.1 < z < 6.4 observed with ESI at moderate resolution (4000 < R < 10000). DR3 contains 872 spectra available in flux calibrated form, representing a sum total exposure time of approximately 2.8 megaseconds. These co-added spectra arise from a total of 2753 individual exposures of quasars taken from the Keck Observatory Archive (KOA) in raw form and uniformly processed using a data reduction package made available through the XIDL distribution. We present a study of the metal-enriched cool halo gas traced by MgII absorption around 228 galaxies at z~0.8-1.5 within 28 quasar fields from the MUSE Analysis of Gas around Galaxies (MAGG) survey. We observe no significant evolution in the MgII equivalent width versus impact parameter relation and in the MgII covering fraction compared to surveys at z<~0.5. The stellar mass, along with distance from galaxy centre, appears to be the dominant factor influencing the MgII absorption around galaxies. With a sample that is 90% complete down to a star formation rate of ~0.1 Msun/yr and up to impact parameters ~250-350 kpc from quasars, we find that the majority (67^{+12}_{-15}% or 14/21) of the MgII absorption systems are associated with more than one galaxy. The complex distribution of metals in these richer environments adds substantial scatter to previously-reported correlations. Multiple galaxy associations show on average five times stronger absorption and three times higher covering fraction within twice the virial radius than isolated galaxies. The dependence of MgII absorption on galaxy properties disfavours the scenario in which a widespread intra-group medium dominates the observed absorption. This leaves instead gravitational interactions among group members or hydrodynamic interactions of the galaxy haloes with the intra-group medium as favoured mechanisms to explain the observed enhancement in the MgII absorption strength and cross section in rich environments., Comment: Published in MNRAS

We present initial results from the \textit{COS and Gemini Mapping the Circumgalactic Medium} (\mbox{CGMCGM} $\equiv$ CGM$^{2}$) survey. The CGM$^{2}$ survey consists of 1689 galaxies, all with high-quality Gemini GMOS spectra, within 1 Mpc of twenty-two $z \lesssim 1$ quasars, all with S/N$\sim$10 {\emph{HST/COS}} G130M$+$G160M spectra. For 572 of these galaxies having stellar masses $10^{7} M_{\odot} < M_{\star} < 10^{11} M_{\odot}$ and $z \lesssim 0.5$, we show that the \ion{H}{1} covering fraction above a threshold of \NHI$>10^{14} $cm$^{-2}$ is $\gtrsim 0.5$ within 1.5 virial radii ($R_{\rm vir} \sim R_{200m}$). We examine the \ion{H}{1} kinematics and find that the majority of absorption lies within $\pm$ 250 km s$^{-1}$ of the galaxy systemic velocity. We examine \ion{H}{1} covering fractions over a range of impact parameters to infer a characteristic size of the CGM, $R^{14}_{\rm CGM}$, as a function of galaxy mass. $R^{14}_{\rm CGM}$ is the impact parameter at which the probability of observing an absorber with \NHI $>$ 10$^{14}$ cm$^{-2}$ is $>$ 50\%. In this framework, the radial extent of the CGM of $M_{\star} > 10^{9.9} M_{\odot}$ galaxies is $R^{14}_{\rm CGM} = 346^{+57}_{-53}$ kpc or $R^{14}_{\rm CGM} \simeq 1.2R_{\rm vir}$. Intermediate-mass galaxies with $10^{9.2} < M_{\star}/M_{\odot} < 10^{9.9}$ have an extent of $R^{14}_{\rm CGM} = 353^{+64}_{-50}$ kpc or $R^{14}_{\rm CGM} \simeq 2.4R_{\rm vir}$. Low-mass galaxies, $M_{\star} < 10^{9.2} M_{\odot}$, show a smaller physical scale $R^{14}_{\rm CGM} = 177_{-65}^{+70}$ kpc and extend to $R^{14}_{\rm CGM} \simeq 1.6R_{\rm vir}$. Our analysis suggests that using $R_{\rm vir}$ as a proxy for the characteristic radius of the CGM likely underestimates its extent., Comment: 30 pages, 14 figures. Project AMIGA (Absorption Maps In the Gas of Andromeda) is a large ultraviolet Hubble Space Telescope program, which has assembled a sample of 43 QSOs that pierce the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of Andromeda (M31) from R=25 to 569 kpc (25 of them probing gas from 25 kpc to about the virial radius-Rvir = 300 kpc-of M31). Our large sample provides an unparalleled look at the physical conditions and distribution of metals in the CGM of a single galaxy using ions that probe a wide range of gas phases (Si II, Si III, Si IV, C II, C IV, and O VI, the latter being from the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer). We find that Si III and O VI have near unity covering factor maintained all the way out to 1.2Rvir and 1.9Rvir, respectively. We show that Si III is the dominant ion over Si II and Si IV at any R. While we do not find that the properties of the CGM of M31 depend strongly on the azimuth, we show that they change remarkably around 0.3-0.5Rvir, conveying that the inner regions of the CGM of M31 are more dynamic and have more complicated multi-phase gas-structures than at R>0.5Rvir. We estimate the metal mass of the CGM within Rvir as probed by Si II, Si III, and Si IV is 2x10^7 Msun and by O VI is >8x10^7 Msun, while the baryon mass of the 10^4-10^5.5 K gas is ~4x10^10 (Z/0.3 Zsun)^(-1) Msun within Rvir. We show that different zoom-in cosmological simulations of L* galaxies better reproduce the column density profile of O VI with R than Si III or the other studied ions. We find that observations of the M31 CGM and zoom-in simulations of L* galaxies have both lower ions showing higher column density dispersion and dependence on R than higher ions, indicating that the higher ionization structures are larger and/or more broadly distributed., Comment: Submitted to the Astrophysical Journal. We present the design, methods, and first results of the MUSE Analysis of Gas around Galaxies (MAGG) survey, a large programme on the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) instrument at the Very Large Telescope (VLT) which targets 28 z > 3.2 quasars to investigate the connection between optically-thick gas and galaxies at z~3-4. MAGG maps the environment of 52 strong absorption line systems at z > 3, providing the first statistical sample of galaxies associated with gas-rich structures in the early Universe. In this paper, we study the galaxy population around a very metal poor gas cloud at z~3.5 towards the quasar J124957.23-015928.8. We detect three Lyman alpha emitters within <200km/s of the cloud redshift, at projected separations <185 kpc (physical). The presence of star-forming galaxies near a very metal-poor cloud indicates that metal enrichment is still spatially inhomogeneous at this redshift. Based on its very low metallicity and the presence of nearby galaxies, we propose that the most likely scenario for this LLS is that it lies within a filament which may be accreting onto a nearby galaxy. Taken together with the small number of other LLSs studied with MUSE, the observations to date show a range of different environments near strong absorption systems. We present a novel absorption line survey using 54 blue horizontal branch stars (BHBs) in the Milky Way halo as background sources for detecting gas flows at the disk-halo interface. Distance measurements to high-latitude ($b$ > 60{\deg}) background stars at 3.1-13.4 kpc, combined with unprecedented spatial sampling and spectral resolution, allow us to examine the 3-dimensional spatial distribution and kinematics of gas flows near the disk. We detect absorption signatures of extraplanar CaII and NaI in Keck HIRES spectra and find that their column densities exhibit no trend with distance to the background sources, indicating that these clouds lie within 3.1 kpc of the disk. We calculate covering fractions of $f_{CaII}$ = 63%, $f_{NaI}$ = 26%, and $f_{HI}$ = 52%, consistent with a picture of the CGM that includes multi-phase clouds containing small clumps of cool gas within hotter, more diffuse gas. Our measurements constrain the scale of any substructure within these cool clouds to <0.5 kpc. CaII and NaI absorption features exhibit an intermediate-velocity (IV) component inflowing at velocities of -75 km/s < v < -25 km/s relative to the local standard of rest, consistent with previously-studied HI structures in this region. We report the new detection of an inflow velocity gradient ${\Delta}v_z$ ~ 6-9 km/s/kpc across the Galactic plane. We address the spatial scale, ionization structure, mass and metal content of gas at the Milky Way disk-halo interface detected as absorption in the foreground of seven closely-spaced, high-latitude halo blue horizontal branch stars (BHBs) with heights z = 3 - 14 kpc. We detect transitions that trace multiple ionization states (e.g. CaII, FeII, SiIV, CIV) with column densities that remain constant with height from the disk, indicating that the gas most likely lies within z < 3.4 kpc. The intermediate ionization state gas traced by CIV and SiIV is strongly correlated over the full range of transverse separations probed by our sightlines, indicating large, coherent structures greater than 1 kpc in size. The low ionization state material traced by CaII and FeII does not exhibit a correlation with either N$_{\rm HI}$ or transverse separation, implying cloudlets or clumpiness on scales less than 10 pc. We find that the observed ratio log(N_SiIV/ N_CIV), with a median value of -0.69+/-0.04, is sensitive to the total carbon content of the ionized gas under the assumption of either photoionization or collisional ionization. The only self-consistent solution for photoionized gas requires that Si be depleted onto dust by 0.35 dex relative to the solar Si/C ratio, similar to the level of Si depletion in DLAs and in the Milky Way ISM. The allowed range of values for the areal mass infall rate of warm, ionized gas at the disk-halo interface is 0.0003 < dM_gas / dtdA [M_sun kpc^-2 yr^-] < 0.006. Galaxies are surrounded by extended atmospheres, which are often called the circumgalactic medium (CGM) and are the least understood part of galactic ecosystems. The CGM serves as a reservoir of both diffuse, metal-poor gas accreted from the intergalactic medium, and metal-rich gas that is either ejected from galaxies by energetic feedback or stripped from infalling satellites. As such, the CGM is empirically multi-phased and complex in dynamics. Significant progress has been made in the past decade or so in observing the cosmic-ray/B-field, as well as various phases of the CGM. But basic questions remain to be answered. First, what are the energy, mass, and metal contents of the CGM? More specifically, how are they spatially distributed and partitioned in the different components? Moreover, how are they linked to properties of host galaxies and their global clustering and intergalactic medium environments? Lastly, what are the origin, state, and life-cycle of the CGM? The circumgalactic medium (CGM) of galaxies serves as a record of the influences of outflows and accretion that drive the evolution of galaxies. Feedback from star formation drives outflows that carry mass and metals away from galaxies to the CGM, while infall from the intergalactic medium (IGM) is thought to bring in fresh gas to fuel star formation. Such exchanges of matter between IGM-CGM-galaxies have proven critical to producing galaxy scaling relations in cosmological simulations that match observations. However, the nature of these processes, of the physics that drives outflows and accretion, and their evolution with cosmic time are not fully characterized. One approach to constraining these processes is to characterize the metal enrichment of gas around and beyond galaxies. Measurements of the metallicity distribution functions of CGM/IGM gas over cosmic time provide independent tests of cosmological simulations. We have made great progress over the last decade as direct result of a very sensitive, high-resolution space-based UV spectrograph and the rise of ground-based spectroscopic archives. We argue the next transformative leap to track CGM/IGM metals during the epoch of galaxy formation and transformation into quiescent galaxies will require 1) a larger space telescope with an even more sensitive high-resolution spectrograph covering both the far- and near-UV (1,000-3,000 \AA); and 2) ground-based archives housing science-ready data., Comment: Astro2020 Decadal Science White Paper

Galaxies evolve under the influence of gas flows between their interstellar medium and their surrounding gaseous halos known as the circumgalactic medium (CGM). The CGM is a major reservoir of galactic baryons and metals, and plays a key role in the long cycles of accretion, feedback, and recycling of gas that drive star formation. In order to fully understand the physical processes at work within galaxies, it is therefore essential to have a firm understanding of the composition, structure, kinematics, thermodynamics, and evolution of the CGM. In this white paper we outline connections between the CGM and galactic star formation histories, internal kinematics, chemical evolution, quenching, satellite evolution, dark matter halo occupation, and the reionization of the larger-scale intergalactic medium in light of the advances that will be made on these topics in the 2020s. We argue that, in the next decade, fundamental progress on all of these major issues depends critically on improved empirical characterization and theoretical understanding of the CGM. In particular, we discuss how future advances in spatially-resolved CGM observations at high spectral resolution, broader characterization of the CGM across galaxy mass and redshift, and expected breakthroughs in cosmological hydrodynamic simulations will help resolve these major problems in galaxy evolution., Comment: Astro2020 Decadal Science White Paper

We report the discovery and analysis of only the third Lyman-limit system in which a high-quality resolution, echelle spectrum reveals no metal absorption lines, implying a metallicity $\lesssim$1/10000 solar. Our HIRES spectrum of the background quasar, PSS1723$+$2243, provides a neutral hydrogen column density range for LLS1723 of $N_\textrm{HI}=10^{\text{17.9--18.3}}$ cm$^{-2}$ at redshift $z_\textrm{abs}\approx4.391$. The lower bound on this range, and the lack of detectable absorption from the strongest low-ionisation metal lines, are combined in photoionisation models to infer a robust, conservative upper limit on the metallicity: $\log(Z/Z_\odot)<-4.14$ at 95% confidence. Such a low metallicity raises the question of LLS1723's origin and enrichment history. Previous simulations of the circumgalactic medium imply that LLS1723 is a natural candidate for a cold gas stream accreting towards a galaxy. Alternatively, LLS1723 may represent a high-density portion of the intergalactic medium containing either pristine gas -- unpolluted by stellar debris for 1.4 Gyr after the Big Bang -- or the remnants of low-energy supernovae from (likely low-mass) Population III stars. Evidence for the circumgalactic scenario could be obtained by mapping the environment around LLS1723 with optical integral-field spectroscopy. We present a search for HI in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of 21 massive ($\langle \log M_\star \rangle \sim 11.4$), luminous red galaxies (LRGs) at $z\sim0.5$. Using UV spectroscopy of QSO sightlines projected within 500 kpc ($\sim R_{vir}$) of these galaxies, we detect HI absorption in 11/21 sightlines, including two partial Lyman limit systems and two Lyman limit systems. The covering factor of $\log N(HI) \ge 16.0$ gas within the virial radius of these LRGs is $f_c(\rho \le R_{vir}) = 0.27^{+0.11}_{-0.10}$, while for optically-thick gas ($\log N(HI) \ge 17.2$) it is $f_c(\rho \le R_{vir}) = 0.15^{+0.10}_{-0.07}$. Combining this sample of massive galaxies with previous galaxy-selected CGM studies, we find no strong dependence of the HI covering factor on galaxy mass, although star-forming galaxies show marginally higher covering factors. There is no evidence for a critical mass above which dense, cold ($T \sim 10^4$ K) gas is suppressed in the CGM of galaxies (spanning stellar masses $9.5 \lesssim \log M_\star \lesssim 11.8$). The metallicity distribution in LRGs is indistinguishable from those found about lower-mass star-forming galaxies, and we find low-metallicity gas with $[{\rm X/H}] \approx -1.8$ (1.5% solar) and below about massive galaxies. About half the cases show super-solar [FeII/MgII] abundances as seen previously in cool gas near massive galaxies. Observing the circumgalactic medium (CGM) in emission provides 3D maps of the spatial and kinematic extent of the gas that fuels galaxies and receives their feedback. We present mock emission-line maps of highly resolved CGM gas from the FOGGIE project (Figuring Out Gas & Galaxies in Enzo) and link these maps back to physical and spatial properties of the gas. By increasing the spatial resolution alone, the total luminosity of the line emission increases by an order of magnitude. This increase arises in the abundance of dense small-scale structure resolved when the CGM gas is simulated to < 100 pc scales. Current integral field unit instruments like KCWI and MUSE should be able to detect the brightest knots and filaments of such emission, and from this to infer the bulk kinematics of the CGM gas with respect to the galaxy. We conclude that accounting for small-scale structure well below the level of instrument spatial resolution is necessary to properly interpret such observations in terms of the underlying gas structure driving observable emission., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures. Lyman Limit systems (LLSs) trace the low-density circumgalactic medium and the most dense regions of the intergalactic medium, so their number density and evolution at high redshift, just after reionisation, are important to constrain. We present a survey for LLSs at high redshifts, $z_{\rm LLS} =3.5$--5.4, in the homogeneous dataset of 153 optical quasar spectra at $z \sim 5$ from the Giant Gemini GMOS survey. Our analysis includes detailed investigation of survey biases using mock spectra which provide important corrections to the raw measurements. We estimate the incidence of LLSs per unit redshift at $z \approx 4.4$ to be $\ell(z) = 2.6 \pm 0.4$. Combining our results with previous surveys at $z_{\rm LLS} <4$, the best-fit power-law evolution is $\ell(z) = \ell_* [(1+z)/4]^\alpha$ with $\ell_* = 1.46 \pm 0.11$ and $\alpha = 1.70 \pm 0.22$ (68\% confidence intervals). Despite hints in previous $z_{\rm LLS} <4$ results, there is no indication for a deviation from this single power-law soon after reionization. Finally, we integrate our new results with previous surveys of the intergalactic and circumgalactic media to constrain the hydrogen column density distribution function, $f(N_{\rm HI},X)$, over 10 orders of magnitude. The data at $z \sim 5$ are not well described by the $f(N_{\rm HI},X)$ model previously reported for $z \sim 2$--3 (after re-scaling) and a 7-pivot model fitting the full $z \sim 2$--5 dataset is statistically unacceptable. We present simulations from the new "Figuring Out Gas & Galaxies in Enzo" (FOGGIE) project. In contrast to most extant simulations of galaxy formation, which concentrate computational resources on galactic disks and spheroids with fluid and particle elements of fixed mass, the FOGGIE simulations focus on extreme spatial and mass resolution in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) surrounding galaxies. Using the Enzo code and a new refinement scheme, FOGGIE reaches spatial resolutions of 381 comoving $h^{-1}$ pc and resolves extremely low masses ($\lesssim 1$--$100$ Msun out to 100 comoving $h^{-1}$ kpc from the central halo. At these resolutions, cloud and filament-like structures giving rise to simulated absorption are smaller, and better resolved, than the same structures simulated with standard density-dependent refinement. Most of the simulated absorption arises in identifiable and well-resolved structures with masses $\lesssim 10^4$ Msun, well below the mass resolution of typical zoom simulations. However, integrated quantities such as mass surface density and ionic covering fractions change at only the $\lesssim 30$% level as resolution is varied. This relatively small changes in projected quantities---even when the sizes and distribution of absorbing clouds change dramatically---indicate that commonly used observables provide only weak constraints on the physical structure of the underlying gas. Comparing the simulated absorption features to the KODIAQ (Keck Observatory Database of Ionized Absorption toward Quasars) survey of $z \sim2$--$3.5$ Lyman limit systems, we show that high-resolution FOGGIE runs better resolve the internal kinematic structure of detected absorption, and better match the observed distribution of absorber properties. These results indicate that CGM resolution is key in properly testing simulations of galaxy evolution with circumgalactic observations., Comment: ApJ, in press. We survey the highly ionized circumgalactic media (CGM) of 29 blindly selected galaxies at 0.49 < z_(gal) < 1.44 based on high-S/N ultraviolet spectra of z > 1 QSOs and the galaxy database from the COS Absorption Survey of Baryon Harbors (CASBaH). We detect the Ne VIII doublet in nine of the galaxies, and for gas with N(Ne VIII) > 10^13.3 cm^-2 (> 10^13.5 cm^-2), we derive a Ne VIII covering fraction f_c = 75 +15/-25% (44 +22/-20%) within impact parameter (rho) < 200 kpc of M_* = 10^(9.5-11.5) Msol galaxies and f_c = 70 +16/-22% (f_c = 42 +20/-17%) within rho < 1.5 virial radii. We estimate the mass in Ne VIII-traced gas to be M_gas(Ne VIII) > 10^9.5 Msol (Z/Zsol)^-1, or 6-20% of the expected baryonic mass if the Ne VIII absorbers have solar metallicity. Ionizing Ne VII to Ne VIII requires 207 eV, and photons with this energy are scarce in the CGM. However, for the median halo mass and redshift of our sample, the virial temperature is close to the peak temperature for the Ne VIII ion, and the Ne VIII-bearing gas is plausibly collisionally ionized near this temperature. Moreover, we find that photoionized Ne VIII requires cool and low-density clouds that would be highly underpressured (by approximately two orders of magnitude) relative to the putative, ambient virialized medium, complicating scenarios where such clouds could survive. Thus, more complex (e.g., non-equilibrium) models may be required; this first statistical sample of Ne VIII absorber/galaxy systems will provide stringent constraints for future CGM studies., Comment: Published in ApJL, Volume 877, Issue 2, Article L20

The Giant Southern Stream (GSS) of M31, a keystone signature of a major accretion event, yields crucial constraints on M31 formation and evolution models. Currently, our understanding of the GSS, in terms of both its geometry and its chemistry, results from either wide-field imaging probing only a few magnitudes below the red giant branch tip, or deep imaging or spectroscopy of isolated regions. Here, we take an alternative approach, using Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging to characterize the horizontal branch red clump (RC) using unbinned maximum likelihood fits to luminosity functions (LFs) from observed color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs). Comparing the RC mean magnitude across three fields at projected distances of 21, 52 and 80 kpc from M31, we find a line of sight distance gradient identical to recent literature measurements in fields along the core. We also find tentative evidence that the line of sight distance dispersion increases with projected distance from M31. Meanwhile, the metallicity in the 52 kpc field westward of the GSS core is at least as high as that in the 21 kpc GSS core field, and the peak colors of the RC in these two fields imply identical metallicities to within 0.2 dex. We discuss implications for distance and metallicity gradients both along and perpendicular to the GSS in the context of recent ground-based photometric and spectroscopic results, including evidence for a dropoff in metallicity moving westward from the GSS, as well as prospects for further constraining stellar populations in the vicinity of the GSS., Comment: 30 pages, 14 figures. We present a neutral hydrogen-selected absorption-line survey of gas with HI column densities 152 orders of magnitude at any given N(HI), indicating a wide range of metallicities (from solar to <1/100 solar). In the range 16.2

We present the first results from our survey of intervening and proximate Lyman limit systems (LLSs) at $z$$\sim$2.0-2.5 using the Wide Field Camera 3 on-board the Hubble Space Telescope. The quasars in our sample are projected pairs with proper transverse separations $R_\perp$$\leq$150 kpc and line of sight velocity separations $\lesssim$11,000 km/s. We construct a stacked ultraviolet (rest-frame wavelengths 700-2000\AA) spectrum of pairs corrected for the intervening Lyman forest and Lyman continuum absorption. The observed spectral composite presents a moderate flux excess for the most prominent broad emission lines, a $\sim$30% decrease in flux at $\lambda$=800-900\AA\ compared to a stack of brighter quasars not in pairs at similar redshifts, and lower values of the mean free path of the HI ionizing radiation for pairs ($\lambda_{\rm mfp}^{912}=140.7\pm20.2~h_{70}^{-1}$Mpc) compared to single quasars ($\lambda_{\rm mfp}^{912}=213.8\pm28~h_{70}^{-1}$Mpc) at the average redshift $z\simeq2.44$. From the modelling of LLS absorption in these pairs, we find a higher ($\sim$20%) incidence of proximate LLSs with $\log N_{\rm HI}\geq17.2$ at $\delta v$$<$5,000 km/s compared to single quasars ($\sim$6%). These two rates are different at the 5$\sigma$ level. Moreover, we find that optically-thick absorbers are equally shared between foreground and background quasars. Based on these pieces of evidence, we conclude that there is a moderate excess of gas absorbing Lyman continuum photons in our closely-projected quasar pairs compared to single quasars. We argue that this gas arises mostly within large-scale structures or partially neutral regions inside the dark matter haloes where these close pairs reside., Comment: Revised version with minor changes to the text following proof. We present the first paper of the series Origin of Metals around Galaxies (OMG) aimed to study the origin of the metals observed in the circumgalactic and intergalactic media. In this work we extract and build the catalogs of metal absorbers that will be used in future analyses, and make our results publicly available to the community. We design a fully automatic algorithm to search for absorption metal-line doublets of the species CIV, NV, SiIV and MgII in high-resolution ($R\gtrsim30\,000$) quasar spectra without human intervention, and apply it to the high-resolution and signal-to-noise ratio spectra of 690 quasars, observed with the UVES and HIRES instruments. We obtain $5\,656$ CIV doublets, $7\,919$ doublets of MgII, $2\,258$ of SiIV, and 239 of NV, constituting the largest high-resolution metal-doublet samples to date, and estimate the dependence of their completeness and purity on various doublet parameters such as equivalent width and redshift, using real and artificial quasar spectra. The catalogs include doublets with rest-frame line equivalent widths down to a few ${\rm m\AA}$, all detected at a significance above 3$\sigma$, and covering the redshifts between $1

We present a photometric detection of the first brightness dips of the unique variable star KIC 8462852 since the end of the Kepler space mission in 2013 May. Our regular photometric surveillance started in October 2015, and a sequence of dipping began in 2017 May continuing on through the end of 2017, when the star was no longer visible from Earth. We distinguish four main 1-2.5% dips, named "Elsie," "Celeste," "Skara Brae," and "Angkor", which persist on timescales from several days to weeks. Our main results so far are: (i) there are no apparent changes of the stellar spectrum or polarization during the dips; (ii) the multiband photometry of the dips shows differential reddening favoring non-grey extinction. Therefore, our data are inconsistent with dip models that invoke optically thick material, but rather they are in-line with predictions for an occulter consisting primarily of ordinary dust, where much of the material must be optically thin with a size scale <<1um, and may also be consistent with models invoking variations intrinsic to the stellar photosphere. Notably, our data do not place constraints on the color of the longer-term "secular" dimming, which may be caused by independent processes, or probe different regimes of a single process., Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

We decompose the Lyman-{\alpha} (Ly{\alpha}) forest of an extensive sample of 74 high signal-to-noise ratio and high-resolution quasar spectra into a collection of Voigt profiles. Absorbers located near caustics in the peculiar velocity field have the smallest Doppler parameters, resulting in a low-$b$ cutoff in the $b$-$N_{\text{HI}}$ set by the thermal state of intergalactic medium (IGM). We fit this cutoff as a function of redshift over the range $2.0\leq z \leq 3.4$, which allows us to measure the evolution of the IGM temperature-density ($T= T_0 (\rho/ \rho_0)^{\gamma-1}$) relation parameters $T_0$ and $\gamma$. We calibrate our measurements against Ly$\alpha$ forest simulations, using 21 different thermal models of the IGM at each redshift, also allowing for different values of the IGM pressure smoothing scale. We adopt a forward-modeling approach and self-consistently apply the same algorithms to both data and simulations, propagating both statistical and modeling uncertainties via Monte Carlo. The redshift evolution of $T_0$ shows a suggestive peak at $z=2.8$, while our evolution of $\gamma$ is consistent with $\gamma\simeq 1.4$ and disfavors inverted temperature-density relations. Our measured evolution of $T_0$ and $\gamma$ are generally in good agreement with previous determinations in the literature. Both the peak in the evolution of $T_0$ at $z = 2.8$, as well as the high temperatures $T_0\simeq 15000-20000\,$K that we observe at $2.4 < z < 3.4$, strongly suggest that a significant episode of heating occurred after the end of HI reionization, which was most likely the cosmic reionization of HeII., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, 23 pages, 26 figures, machine readable tables available online

The Large Ultraviolet / Optical / Infrared Surveyor (LUVOIR) is one of four large mission concepts currently undergoing community study for consideration by the 2020 Astronomy and Astrophysics Decadal Survey. The LUVOIR Ultraviolet Multi-Object Spectrograph, LUMOS, is being designed to support all of the UV science requirements of LUVOIR, from exoplanet host star characterization to tomography of circumgalactic halos to water plumes on outer solar system satellites. LUMOS offers point source and multi-object spectroscopy across the UV bandpass, with multiple resolution modes to support different science goals. The instrument will provide low (R = 8,000-18,000) and medium (R = 30,000-65,000) resolution modes across the far-ultraviolet (FUV: 100-200 nm) and near-ultraviolet (NUV: 200-400 nm) windows, and a very low resolution mode (R = 500) for spectroscopic investigations of extremely faint objects in the FUV. Imaging spectroscopy will be accomplished over a 3 x 1.6 arcminute field-of-view by employing holographically-ruled diffraction gratings to control optical aberrations, microshutter arrays (MSA), advanced optical coatings for high-throughput in the FUV, and next generation large-format photon-counting detectors. The spectroscopic capabilities of LUMOS are augmented by an FUV imaging channel (100-200nm, 13 milliarcsecond angular resolution, 2 x 2 arcminute field-of-view) that will employ a complement of narrow and medium-band filters. We present an overview of LUMOS' observing modes and estimated performance curves for effective area, spectral resolution, and imaging performance. We present and make publicly available the second data release (DR2) of the Keck Observatory Database of Ionized Absorption toward Quasars (KODIAQ) survey. KODIAQ DR2 consists of a fully-reduced sample of 300 quasars at 0.07 < z_em < 5.29 observed with HIRES at high resolution (36,000 <= R <= 103,000). DR2 contains 831 spectra available in continuum normalized form, representing a sum total exposure time of ~4.9 megaseconds on source. These co-added spectra arise from a total of 1577 individual exposures of quasars taken from the Keck Observatory Archive (KOA) in raw form and uniformly processed. DR2 extends DR1 by adding 130 new quasars to the sample, including additional observations of QSOs in DR1. We present Keck Cosmic Web Imager spectroscopy of the four putative images of the lensed quasar candidate J014709+463037 recently discovered by Berghea et al. (2017). The data verify the source as a quadruply lensed, broad absorption-line quasar having z_S = 2.377 +/- 0.007. We detect intervening absorption in the FeII 2586, 2600, MgII 2796, 2803, and/or CIV 1548, 1550 transitions in eight foreground systems, three of which have redshifts consistent with the photometric-redshift estimate reported for the lensing galaxy (z_L ~ 0.57). By virtue of their positions on the sky, the source images probe these absorbers over transverse physical scales of ~0.3-21 kpc, permitting assessment of the variation in metal-line equivalent width W_r as a function of sight-line separation. We measure differences in W_r,2796 of <40% across all sight-line pairs subtending 7-21 kpc, suggestive of a high degree of spatial coherence for MgII-absorbing material. W_r,2600 is observed to vary by >50% over the same scales across the majority of sight-line pairs, while CIV absorption exhibits a wide range in W_r,1548 differences of ~5-80% within transverse distances less than ~3 kpc. J014709+463037 is one of only a handful of z > 2 quadruply lensed systems for which all four source images are very bright (r = 15.4-17.7 mag) and are easily separated in ground-based seeing conditions. Flux estimates for ionizing radiation escaping from star-forming galaxies with characteristic UV luminosities ($L^{*}_{1500(1+z)}$) derived from GALEX and the VIMOS-VLT Deep Survey, are presented as a function of redshift and assumed escape fraction. These estimates offer guidance to the design of instrumentation and observing strategies, be they spectroscopic or photometric, attempting to detect LyC escaping star-forming galaxies for redshifts $ z < 3$. Examples are given that relate the absolution escape fraction ($f^{e}_{LyC}$) of ionizing photons, integrated over the entire extreme UV (EUV) bandpass, to the relative escape fraction ($f^{e}_{900}$) observed just shortward of the ionization edge at 911.8 \AA\ as a function of HI, HeI, and HeII column densities. We find that for $\log{N_{HI}(cm^{-2})} \gtrsim 17.0$ $f^{e}_{LyC}$ is significantly greater than $f^{e}_{900}$. We present a deep search for HI 21-cm emission from the gaseous halo of Messier 31 as part of Project AMIGA, a large program Hubble Space Telescope program to study the circumgalactic medium of the Andromeda galaxy. Our observations with the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telesope target sight lines to 48 background AGNs, more than half of which have been observed in the ultraviolet with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph, with impact parameters $25 \lesssim \rho \lesssim 330$ kpc ($0.1 \lesssim \rho / R_{\rm vir} \lesssim 1.1$). We do not detect any 21-cm emission toward these AGNs to limits of $N({\rm HI}) \approx 4 \times10^{17}$ cm$^{-2}$ ($5\sigma$, per 2 kpc diameter beam). This column density corresponds to an optical depth of $\sim2.5$ at the Lyman limit, thus our observations overlap with absorption line studies of Lyman limit systems at higher redshift. Our non-detections place a limit on the covering factor of such optically-thick gas around M31 to $f_c < 0.051$ (at 90\% confidence) for $\rho \leq R_{\rm vir}$. While individual clouds have previously been found in the region between M31 and M33, the covering factor of strongly optically-thick gas is quite small. Our upper limits on the covering factor are consistent with expectations from recent cosmological "zoom" simulations. Recent COS-Halos ultraviolet measurements of \HI\ absorption about an ensemble of galaxies at $z \approx 0.2$ show significantly higher covering factors within $\rho \lesssim 0.5 R_{\rm vir}$ at the same $N({\rm H I})$, although the metal ion-to-H I ratios appear to be consistent with those seen in M31., Comment: Accepted for publication in the ApJ. We present an analysis of the metallicity distribution of the dense circumgalactic medium (CGM) of galaxies at 0.1 < z < 1.1 as probed by partial Lyman limit systems (pLLSs, 16.1 < log N(H I) < 17.2) and LLSs (17.2 < log N(H I) < 17.7 in our sample). The new H I-selected sample, drawn from our HST COS G140L snapshot survey of 61 QSOs, has 20 pLLSs and 10 LLSs. Combined with our previous survey, we have a total of 44 pLLSs and 11 LLSs. We find that the metallicity distribution of the pLLSs is bimodal at z < 1, with a minimum at [X/H] = -1. The low-metallicity peak comprises (57 +/- 8)% of the pLLSs and is centered at [X/H] ~ -1.87 (1.3% solar metallicity), while the high-metallicity peak is centered at [X/H] ~ -0.32 (48% solar metallicity). Although the sample of LLSs is still small, there is some evidence that the metallicity distributions of the LLSs and pLLSs are different, with a far lower fraction of very metal-poor ([X/H] < -1.4) LLSs than pLLSs. The fraction of LLSs with [X/H] < -1 is similar to that found in pLLSs (~56%). However, higher H I column density absorbers (log N(H I) > 19.0) show a much lower fraction of metal-poor gas; therefore, the metallicity distribution of gas in and around galaxies depends sensitively on N(H I) at z < 1. We interpret the high-metallicity ([X/H] > -1) pLLSs and LLSs as arising in outflows, recycling winds, and tidally-stripped gas around galaxies. The low-metallicity pLLSs and LLSs imply that the CGM of z < 1 galaxies is also host to a substantial mass of cool, dense, low-metallicity gas that may ultimately accrete onto the galaxies., Comment: 29 pages, 14 figures, 7 tables. We present the first results from our KODIAQ Z survey aimed to determine the metallicity distribution and physical properties of the z>2 partial and full Lyman limit systems (pLLSs and LLSs; 16.2

We report on the search for galaxies in the proximity of two very metal-poor gas clouds at z~3 towards the quasar Q0956+122. With a 5-hour MUSE integration in a ~500x500 kpc^2 region centred at the quasar position, we achieve a >80% complete spectroscopic survey of continuum-detected galaxies with m<25 mag and Ly{\alpha} emitters with luminosity L>3e41 erg/s. We do not identify galaxies at the redshift of a z~3.2 Lyman limit system (LLS) with log Z/Zsun = -3.35 +/- 0.05, placing this gas cloud in the intergalactic medium or circumgalactic medium of a galaxy below our sensitivity limits. Conversely, we detect five Ly{\alpha} emitters at the redshift of a pristine z~3.1 LLS with log Z/Zsun < -3.8, while ~0.4 sources were expected given the z~3 Ly{\alpha} luminosity function. Both this high detection rate and the fact that at least three emitters appear aligned in projection with the LLS suggest that this pristine cloud is tracing a gas filament that is feeding one or multiple galaxies. Our observations uncover two different environments for metal-poor LLSs, implying a complex link between these absorbers and galaxy halos, which ongoing MUSE surveys will soon explore in detail. Moreover, in agreement with recent MUSE observations, we detected a ~90 kpc Ly{\alpha} nebula at the quasar redshift and three Ly{\alpha} emitters reminiscent of a "dark galaxy" population., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures. We measured metallicities for 33 z=3.4-4.2 absorption line systems drawn from a sample of H I-selected-Lyman limit systems (LLSs) identified in Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) quasar spectra and stratified based on metal line features. We obtained higher-resolution spectra with the Keck Echellette Spectrograph and Imager, selecting targets according to our stratification scheme in an effort to fully sample the LLS population metallicity distribution. We established a plausible range of H I column densities and measured column densities (or limits) for ions of carbon, silicon, and aluminum, finding ionization-corrected metallicities or upper limits. Interestingly, our ionization models were better constrained with enhanced $\alpha$-to-aluminum abundances, with a median abundance ratio of [$\alpha$/Al]=0.3. Measured metallicities were generally low, ranging from [M/H]=-3 to -1.68, with even lower metallicities likely for some systems with upper limits. Using survival statistics to incorporate limits, we constructed the cumulative distribution function (CDF) for LLS metallicities. Recent models of galaxy evolution propose that galaxies replenish their gas from the low-metallicity intergalactic medium (IGM) via high-density H I "flows" and eject enriched interstellar gas via outflows. Thus, there has been some expectation that LLSs at the peak of cosmic star formation ($z\approx3$) might have a bimodal metallicity distribution. We modeled our CDF as a mix of two Gaussian distributions, one reflecting the metallicity of the IGM and the other representative of the interstellar medium of star-forming galaxies. This bimodal distribution yielded a poor fit. The first stars, known as Population III (PopIII), produced the first heavy elements, thereby enriching their surrounding pristine gas. Previous detections of metals in intergalactic gas clouds, however, find a heavy element enrichment larger than $1/1000$ times that of the solar environment, higher than expected for PopIII remnants. In this letter we report the discovery of a Lyman limit system (LLS) at $z=3.53$ with the lowest metallicity seen in gas with discernable metals, $10^{-3.41\pm0.26}$ times the solar value, at a level expected for PopIII remnants. We make the first relative abundance measurement in such low metallicity gas: the carbon-to-silicon ratio is $10^{-0.26\pm0.17}$ times the solar value. This is consistent with models of gas enrichment by a PopIII star formation event early in the Universe, but also consistent with later, Population II enrichment. The metals in all three components comprising the LLS, which has a velocity width of 400 km s$^{-1}$, are offset in velocity by $\sim+6$ km s$^{-1}$ from the bulk of the hydrogen, suggesting the LLS was enriched by a single event. We study the physical properties of a homogeneous sample of 157 optically-thick absorption line systems at redshifts ~1.8-4.4, selected from a high-dispersion spectroscopic survey of Lyman limit systems (LLSs). By means of multiple ionisation models and Bayesian techniques, we derive the posterior probability distribution functions for the density, metallicity, temperature, and dust content of the absorbing gas. We find that z>2 LLSs are highly ionised with ionisation parameters between -32 are characterised by a broad unimodal distribution over >4 orders of magnitude, with a peak at log Z/Zsun~-2. LLSs are metal poor, significantly less enriched than DLAs, with ~70% of the metallicity PDF below log Z/Zsun<-1.5. The median metallicity of super LLSs with log N(HI)>19 rapidly evolves with redshift, with a ten-fold increase between z~2.1-3.6 (~1.5 Gyr). Based on this sample, we find that LLSs at z=2.5-3.5 account for ~15% of all the metals produced by UV-selected galaxies.
