Sepia apama were tagged with acoustic transmitters and monitored on their native House Reef, Boston Bay, South Australia, with a radio acoustic positioning telemetry (RAPT) system. Cuttlefish were tagged with position-only and intra-mantle jet pressure transmitters. New data analyses were developed to handle problem data that arise with an uneven reef environment. Maximum range for the cuttlefish varied from 90 m to 550 m. Cuttlefish home range was between 5300 m2 and 23,700 m2. S. apama were found to be diurnal as average distance travelled was higher in the day than at night, and cuttlefish were active for 32 days, but only 18 nights. After the cuttlefish settled into reef crevices, activity spectrum and positioning analysis showed foraging behaviour at only 3.7% per day and 2.1% per night. Cuttlefish were found to spend more than 95% of the day resting, which suggests that their bioenergetics are more akin to those of octopus than of squid. The cuttlefish combination of predator avoidance, efficient foraging and quiescent lifestyle allows energy to be channelled into growth and fulfillment of the live-fast-die-young cephalopod philosophy.

A mass spawning of squid resembles, at first glance, a chaotic "nuptial dance" (1). But for the first time, we have applied 3-D, radio-linked acoustic positioning (RAP) to this confusing process, and our early results now reveal a choreography that is, in fact, well organized in time and space. Remote tracking with RAP of individual Loligo vulgaris reynaudii off South Africa has provided insights into the daily sequence of behaviors that lead these animals to aggregate for sexual selection. Each dawn, the squid navigatefor several kilometers, toward the shore, to small, well-defined zones near egg beds on the substrate. After several hours of circling above these egg beds, a pelagic, 3-D lek-like aggregation of large males forms; females are drawn in, and the aggregation condenses as the females and males pair, mate, and lay eggs. Smaller "sneaker males" remain on the periphery of the mating arena and, from this station, attempt extra-pair copulations (EPCs). The mating system of squids is thus unexpectedly complex, rivaling those of mammals and birds (2, 3). Commercial squid-jigging fishermen in South Africa have recently been attracted to the spawning grounds, and they have been successful. Moreover, their activities may be selective for large males. Thus, attention should be devoted to ensuring that such targeted fishing does not alter the characteristics of squid population genetics. Remote tracking and video observations, in combination with genetic analyses, may offer a new opportunity to monitor mating effort and reproductive success, and thus to manage the fishery.

The potential use of growth increments deposited on the gladius of the short-finned squid (Illex illecebrosus) for age determination and growth studies was investigated. The gladius lies along the dorsal midline of the mantle and grows from the fins towards the head by the addition of layers of chitin. Growth increments were observed on the dorsal surface of the gladius and could be consistently enumerated. The frequency of deposition approximated statolith incremental deposition rates and the daily nature of gladius growth increments during the adult phase was supported. Total age could not be obtained by gladius growth increment counts on the dorsal surface because, as the gladius grows, the posterior zone becomes progressively vague and the early growth increments are masked. However, gladius increments were highly correlated with mantle growth and provided accurate estimates of size-specific growth. Both group and individual growth trajectories were reconstructed. The latter seemed to be sensitive to feeding events, temperature fluctuations, and maturation processes in captive squids. The potential for reconstruction of individual growth histories and for the study of growth patterns in wild populations is discussed.

Some deep water squids are known to achieve neutral buoyancy by storing ammonium in their body tissues. The Cranchiidae use a unique coelomic cavity to store ammoniacal fluid; in 15 other families, ammonium appears to be sequestered in either vacuoles in the active body tissues or in a gelatinous outer layer. The hypothesis that these squids form a single lineage is here reconsidered through reviews of morphological characters that could support this hypothesis and physiological mechanisms that could contribute to the repeated evolution of ammonium storage. No readily apparent character identifies all ammoniacal squids as belonging to a single lineage, although 5 families of tissue ammoniacal squids appear to be monophyletic. If the elaborate funnel locking apparatus of this group arose within the clade, it is not homologous with that in other taxa, refuting a basis on which close relationships were suggested for ammoniacal squids. Given the limited data available, we question whether some squids considered to be ammoniacal may develop these characters as a result of senescence. Squids are all thought to derive energy from amino acid catabolism, produce large quantities of ammonia and have very low blood pH's which effectively remove ammonia from cells that produce it. They also minimize H+ ion transfer between muscle cells and blood. These features may be important preadaptations for ammonium storage. Given the physiological data, and the absence of morphological evidence supporting monophyly, we argue that ammoniacal squids be best considered to be a polyphyletic group, evolved in parallel.

The present study describes the distribution patterns of the early life stages of pelagic cephalopods in three different areas of the Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean. Specimens were collected during the Meteor-expedition to the Indian Ocean in 1987 by means of multiple opening/closing nets in the top 150m of the water column. A total of 3836 specimens were caught at 67 stations. The following taxa were prevailing: Sthenoteuthis oualaniensis (Ommastrephidae), Abralia marisarabica and Abraliopsis lineata (Enoploteuthidae), Onychoteuthis banksi (Onychoteuthidae), and Liocranchia reinhardti (Cranchiidae). While the enoploteuthid species dominated the two neritic regions (the stations grids off Oman and Pakistan), the ommastrephid and cranchiid species were most abundant in the oceanic waters of the central Arabian Sea. The geographical and vertical distribution patterns of the taxa were analyzed and are discussed along with hydro graphic features which characterized the different areas. The data provide new and important information on the spawning areas of pelagic tropical cephalopods

WHILE ammonites and all other ectocochleate cephalopods became extinct, nautiloids survived relatively unchanged from the Ordovician, suggesting that they are unusually well adapted to their niche. Here we obtain high-resolution tracks of Nautilus positions and depths, combined with telemetered jet pressures, which clarify both its lifestyle and economics. Nautilus is more active in nature than in captivity1, but its energy costs are lower than projected2,3. Viewing Nautilus as 'vertic', rather than benthic, resolves this contradiction. Records show that the cost of transport is the same in any direction within a vertical plane. Living on a reef face swept by a lateral current means that vertical movements4,5 sample large areas for chemical trails. A detected trail can be followed upcurrent in the slow-moving boundary layer, but no effort is wasted on horizontal movement without good prospects for food; long-range movements are downcurrent and made by drifting. Once fed, a Nautilus can reduce its energy costs by moving to deeper, cooler waters, where a single meal can last for months.

The concentrations of intermediate and end products of anaerobic energy metabolism and of free amino acids were determined in mantle musculature and blood sampled from cannulated, unrestrained squid (Loligo pealei, Illex illecebrosus) under control conditions, after fatigue from increasing levels of exercise, and during postexercise recovery. Phosphagen depletion, accumulation of octopine (more so in Illex than in Loligo), and accumulation of succinate indicate that anaerobic metabolism contributes to energy production before fatigue. Proline was a substrate of metabolism in Loligo, as indicated by its depletion in the mantle. In both species, there was no evidence of catabolism of ATP beyond AMP. A comparison of the changes in the free and total levels of adenylates and the phosphagen indicates an earlier detrimental effect of fatigue on the energy status in Loligo. The acidosis provoked by octopine formation in Illex was demonstrated to promote the use of the phosphagen and to protect the free energy change of ATP such that the anaerobic scope of metabolism during swimming is extended and expressed more in Illex than in Loligo. In both species, there was no decrease in the sum of phospho-L-arginine, octopine, and L-arginine, and thus no release of octopine from the mantle, thereby supporting our earlier claim that octopine and associated protons are recycled in the mantle tissue. Overall, the metabolic strategy of Loligo is much less disturbing for the acid-base status. This strategy and the alternative strategy of Illex to keep acidifying protons in the tissue may be important for the protection of hemocyanin function in the two species.

A link is proposed between the processes that led to the evolution of large species of squid and the highly variable, cyclic recruitment seen in squid fisheries. Maximum growth requires maximal feeding and minimal routine metabolism at optimum temperatures, which decrease as squid grow. Topographically induced upwelling zones, inshore of western boundary currents, provide productive environments with appropriate temperatures for all life stages. Most squid are small and live in the tropics or subtropics; locomotor constraints prevent them from swimming long distances. Long annual migrations to spawn upstream in current systems require short-lived squids to maximize rates of growth. Therefore, such systems provide the opportunity and a powerful selective advantage for large size and rapid growth. Increased fecundity and cannibalism provide additional directional selection for large individuals. Current systems show food production peaks (blooms); paralarval release must match these to increase survival. Because squid are semelparous, disruption of delicately balanced lifecycles by physical events can virtually annihilate stocks. Recovery probably requires that populations of large squid "re-evolve" from smaller, more-stable tropical populations of small squid. This recovery phase may extend the "down-side" of abundance cycles. Studies of squid/current systems have focused on western boundary currents, but the Illex complex also associates with eastern boundaries. Such populations are generally smaller than in larger systems, supporting the hypothesis, but more detailed comparisons are required.

Jet propulsion concentrates muscle power on a small volume of high-velocity fluid to give high thrust with low Froude efficiency. Proponents are typically escape artists with high maintenance costs. Nonetheless, oceanic squids depend primarily on jets to forage over large volumes of relatively unproductive ocean low power density, W m−3). A survey of locomotor performance among phyla and along an ‘evolutionary continuum’ of cephalopods (Nautilus, Sepia, Loligo and Illex) suggests that increasing speed and animal power density are required if animals are to compete effectively in environments of decreasing power density. Neutral buoyancy and blood oxygen reserves require unproductive volume, keeping drag high. Undulatory fins increase efficiency, but dependence on muscular hydrostats without rigid skeletal elements limits speed. Migratory oceanic squids show a remarkable range of anatomical, physiological and biochemical adaptations to sustain high speeds by maximizing power density. Muscle mitochondrial density increases 10-fold, but metabolic regulation is realigned to optimize both aerobic and anaerobic capacity. The origins of these adaptations are examined (as far as possible, and perhaps further) along the continuum leading to the most powerful invertebrates.

Squid (Illex illecebrosus, Loligo pealei) were cannulated in the vena cava and swum in a Beamish-type respirometer. Gas tensions and acid-base variables as well as octopine levels were estimated in samples of the mantle and of venous blood collected from quiescent, exercised, and recovered animals. When exhausted, both species exhibited a decrease in vena cava oxygen tensions and a slight alkalosis. With high swimming speeds prior to exhaustion in Illex a slight acidosis developed in the blood, which was linked to a severe intracellular acidosis. Generally, the drop in intracellular pH was linearly correlated with octopine accumulation in this species. Metabolic proton (and end-product) release from the mantle, however, was minimal, thus protecting arterial oxygen binding. High PCO2 values in the mantle of both species lead to the conclusion that the vena cava values analyzed in this and all literature studies on unrestrained cephalopods may not reflect the scope of respiratory acid-base changes in venous blood. Although metabolic changes in blood acid-base status are negligible, the respiratory acidification of venous mantle blood may allow for a classical function of Bohr and Haldane effects in these animals.

A major extension of the geographic range of Loligo pealei, in quantitative as well as spatial aspects, is described. The species' range is extended northward and eastward to approximately 47°30′N: 53°06′W, based on its occurrence in Newfoundland inshore trap samples in the autumn of 1986. Biological data from these samples, as well as from collections from Nova Scotian inshore traps from 1974 to 1986, indicate that L. pealei becomes sexually mature and spawns in Nova Scotian waters but not at Newfoundland. Loligo pealei appears to be prevalent in Canadian waters at times when its sympatric competitor, the short-finned squid Illex illecehrosus, is not abundant. The reported catch of L. pealei in Atlantic Canada for 1986 was 67 t, which suggests that this species could possibly support a small Canadian fishery in some years.
