14. The surrey county lunatic asylum-an overview of some of the first admissions in 1863-1867

Abstract

In the 19th Century in much of Western Europe and North America the number and size of asylums increased hugely. In London, there was a wave of new asylums built in response to the 1808 County Asylums Act and the 1845 Lunacy Act, which required publicly funded care for those deemed mentally unwell. One such asylum was the Surrey County Lunatic Asylum which was built on the grounds which now house Springfield University Hospital in South West London. This paper describes the admission records from Surrey County Lunatic Asylum, between 1863-1867, from information stored in the London Metropolitan Archives. Although the terminology is different from that of today’s, the picture the records paint is of an institution aiming at recovery rather than long-term incarceration which can be how asylums are now remembered. This more nuanced view is starting to be discussed more in public conversations about the topic. The optimism this may imbue is tempered by the shocking number of patients who died within the institution.

Abstract

The case of a 13-year-old girl with coincidental occult intracranial tumour and early-onset anorexia nervosa is discussed. A SPECT examination of regional cerebral blood flow was undertaken during treatment as part of research into the neurobiological basis of anorexia nervosa, and the girl was found to have a large extra-axial lesion in the right frontal area.

38. Follow the money: how is medical school teaching funded?

Abstract

Growing student numbers are producing greater demand for teaching, and resources allocated for education are being placed under increasing strain. The need for more student clinical placements and more clinician teaching time is expanding. Psychiatrists have successfully drawn attention to the importance of parity between mental and physical illness. We now have a responsibility to ensure enhanced opportunities to teach psychiatry to our medical students. This is set against a background of an increasing number of psychiatry consultants leaving the profession and an already stretched National Health Service environment. Many consultants contribute to teaching but do not have this activity included in their job plans. Although clinics and clinical meetings are inevitably slower when students are present, there is often no backfill provided. As outlined below, trusts receive substantial funding to cover costs related to the teaching of medical students, but most of us don't know what actually happens to this money. Here, we discuss how teaching is currently funded and make recommendations regarding improving accountability.

40. Achievement of First-, Second-, and Third-Grade Students on Multiplication and Division Word Problems in Two Different Solution Environments.

Abstract

This is a project in an emerging line of research investigating children's informed knowledge of mathematics questions. The purpose of this study was to analyze the ability of students who had not received multiplication or division instruction to solve multiplication and division word problems. The study consisted of videotaped interviews with 89 first, second, and third grade students. The students read two multiplication problems, two partitive division problems, and two measurement division problems. They were asked to solve the problems in two different environments; the first three problems mentally, and the final three with paper and pencil. Significant differences were found in performance level among the grades and across the problem types. No significant differences were found between the two environments. Included are 3 tables and 13 references. Appendices include questions, a coding sheet, and a consent form. (DC)
