This paper investigates the relationship between the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and extracted rainfall in the Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP) in Central Africa between latitudes 15°S and 20°N and longitudes 0°E and 31°E. Monthly NDVI and GPCP datasets for the period 1982–2000 have been used. The Index of Segmentation of Fourier Components (ISFC) has been applied on the NDVI dataset to segment Central Africa into four bioclimatic ecoregions (BCERs). In order to compare the differential response of vegetation growth to rainfall, an analysis of the inter-annual, intra-annual and seasonal variability for each BCER has been carried out, and the correlations between NDVI and rainfall have been assessed. The plot of the annual cycles of both variables revealed a coherent onset, peak and decay, with a time lag of 1 month for almost all the zones, except the zones, semi-desert and steppe, where a season of short and intense rainfall was observed. The correlation coefficients computed between the two variables are relatively high, especially in brush-grass savannah, where they reach up to 0.90 at a time lag of 1 month. The phenological transition points and phases show that the range between the +1 and -1 time lags corresponds to the duration of the maturity of vegetation. Overall, there is a strong similarity between temporal patterns of NDVI and rainfall, showing that the NDVI can be considered a sensitive indicator of the interannual variability of rainfall.

Nous avons étudié les caractéristiques de la structure du champ de pluie à partir des données du radar météorologique de Dakar-Yoff (Sénégal), collectées lors de sept campagnes de mesure de 1993 à 1999. La localisation de ce radar en zone côtière nous offre la possibilité de faire une étude comparative terrestre et maritime. Pour caractériser les précipitations, nous avons utilisé la hauteur de pluie moyenne annuelle (H), la durée moyenne annuelle des précipitations (T), l'intensité de pluie moyenne annuelle (µR) et l'écart type moyen annuel (σR) sur l'intensité de pluie (R). Nous avons montré que H est plus importante sur terre que sur mer avec une différence de près de 112 %. Un fort gradient nord-sud est observé (environ 500 %) sur 400 km. Sur le paramètre T, nous avons observé également que la durée des précipitations est plus longue sur terre que sur mer avec une différence d'environ 97 %. Nous avons montré que les paramètres µR et σR sont très uniformes dans la zone d'étude réduite à une échelle locale. Nous montrons aussi que la distribution de la densité de probabilité de l'intensité de pluie, caractérisée par les paramètres µR et σR, peut être représentée par une fonction lognormale. La stabilité des paramètres µR et µR à travers les champs de précipitation laisse supposer la même stabilité pour la distribution de la fonction de probabilité P(R). Nous montrons que les champs de précipitation étudiés sont approximativement ergodiques. Cette propriété n'a jamais été discutée auparavant. Cette propriété justifie la validité de P(R) comme paramètre caractéristique signifiant du champ de précipitation.

The aim of our study is to predict the discharge rate of the river Sanaga using neural network techniques. Our investigations have taken place in the Sanaga watershed area in Cameroon. The measurement station is situated in the locality of Edea-Song-Mbengue (04°04’15”N, 10°27’50”E) where we have obtained monthly values of the river Sanaga discharge rates that have been measured in situ from January 1989 to December 2004. We have trained neural networks (NN), each with data of parameters such as the surface albedo, the total cloud fraction, the evaporation, the outgoing longwave radiation, the air temperature, the specific humidity, the surface runoff and the precipitation height. The precipitation values have been obtained from GPCP (Global Precipitation Climatology Project) and those of the other parameters from the data assimilation systems GLDAS (Global Land Data Assimilation System) and MERRA (Modern Era-Retrospective analysis for Research and Application). As desired outputs of the NN during the learning process, we have used the measured river runoff values. After introducing temporal delays of 01 and 02 months in the learning-process, we could observe the presence of the memory effect of the parameters used on the temporal evolution of the river discharge rate. After analysis of the performance's criteria of the NN with the help of the calculated Root Means Square Errors (RMSE) and determination coefficients between predicted values and in situ observed ones, we have perceived that the NN which takes into account the two-month delay can predict the river discharge rate with a strong correlation.
