Abstract

NeuLAND (New Large-Area Neutron Detector) is the next-generation neutron detector for the R3B (Reactions with Relativistic Radioactive Beams) experiment at FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research). NeuLAND detects neutrons with energies from 100 to 1000 MeV, featuring a high detection efficiency, a high spatial and time resolution, and a large multi-neutron reconstruction efficiency. This is achieved by a highly granular design of organic scintillators: 3000 individual submodules with a size of 5x5x250 cm3 are arranged in 30 double planes with 100 submodules each, providing an active area of 250x250 cm2 and a total depth of 3 m. The spatial resolution due to the granularity together with a time resolution of 150 ps ensures high-resolution capabilities. In conjunction with calorimetric properties, a multi-neutron reconstruction efficiency of 50% to 70% for four-neutron events will be achieved, depending on both the emission scenario and the boundary conditions allowed for the reconstruction method. We present in this paper the final design of the detector as well as results from test measurements and simulations on which this design is based.

Abstract

The unbound hydrogen isotopes sup 4 sup , sup 5 H have been studied in the one-proton knockout channel of sup 6 He (240 MeV/u) impinging on a carbon target. The triton fragments originating from this channel were detected in coincidence with neutrons. Relative energy spectra as well as energy and angular correlations have been studied for the t+n and t+n+n systems. The analysis of the energy and angular correlations by the method of hyperspherical harmonic expansion allows to determine the relative weights of the most relevant partial waves in the three-body t+n+n final state. It is shown that the neutrons to a large extent occupy the p-shell and that the I suppi = 1/2 sup + state is strongly populated as expected for the sup 5 H ground state. No evidence for a narrow resonance in the t+n+n system is obtained, instead a broad structure peaked at 3 MeV above the threshold with about 6 MeV as a full width at half maximum is observed. The two-body t+n system reveals a resonance compatible with earlier results for sup 4 H.

In nuclear reactions induced by stable beams, dipole polarizability does not play a major role. For nuclei close to the drip lines where the separation energies of neutrons or protons are small, a substantial part of the dipole strength function occurs at low excitation energies. We propose to investigate this effect by measuring elastic scattering and break-up of Li-11 at energies below the Coulomb barrier.

Abstract

The ISOLDE RIB-facility at CERN has today been producing a vast range of radioactive beams since more than 30 years. The low-energy beams of ISOLDE will be complemented by a post-accelerator, REX-ISOLDE, currently being assembled. In order to convert the pseudo-DC, singly-charged beam from the ISOLDE mass separators into a cooled and bunched beam at higher charge states a novel scheme of trapping, cooling and charge-state breeding has been devised, using a linear Penning trap and an Electron Beam Ion Source (EBIS). This allows for subsequent acceleration by a short, cost-effective LINAC consisting of an RFQ, an IH-structure and three seven-gap resonators, reaching 0.8 - 2.2 MeV/u. The installation of REX-ISOLDE is well underway and the first post-accelerated radioactive beams are expected to be obtained during late 2000.

Abstract

We have remeasured the decay of $^{31}$Ar with a setup sensitive to multiparticle decay branches and obtained a new limit of 1.1 × $10^{-3}$(99%C.L.) on the $\beta$-delayed three-proton branch between the isobaric analog state in $^{31}$Cl and the ground state of $^{28}$Si. This a factor of 17 below the previously reported first observation of $\beta$-delayed three-proton emission in $^{31}$Ar. The limit on a possible $\beta$-3p branch to the first excited state in $^{28}$Si is 2.9 × 10$^{-4}$.

Abstract

The REXEBIS is an Electron Beam Ion Source (EBIS) developed especially to trap and further ionise the sometimes rare and short-lived isotopes that are produced in the ISOLDE separator for the Radioactive beam EXperiment at ISOLDE (REX-ISOLDE). By promoting the single-charged ions to a high charge-state the ions are more efficiently accelerated in the following linear accelerator. The EBIS uses an electron gun capable of producing a 0.5 A electron beam. The electron gun is immersed in a magnetic field of 0.2 T, and the electron beam is compressed to a current density of >200 A/cm2 inside a 2 T superconducting solenoid. The EBIS is situated on a high voltage (HV) platform with an initial electric potential of 60 kV allowing cooled and bunched 60 keV ions extracted from a Penning trap to be captured. Abstract

The gamma -rays following the beta -decay of /sup 224,226,228,230/Fr have been investigated by means of gamma -ray singles (including multispectrum analysis) and gamma gamma coincidence measurements using Ge(Li) spectrometers. The study of the excited levels in /sup 224,226,228,230/Ra is focused on the properties of collective states. The analysis of the results leads one to the conclusion that a ground- state octupole deformation is the most likely explanation for the special features of the collective excitations in Ra and some neighbouring nuclei in the N136 region. Abstract

The light nucleus /sup 9/Be has been studied through the emission of beta-delayed neutrons and alpha particles from /sup 9/Li. The activity is produced at the ISOLDE facility in fragmentation reactions induced either by 600 MeV proton or 910 MeV /sup 3/He beams from the CERN Synchro-cyclotron. After mass separation neutron spectra are recorded using /sup 3/He-filled proportional counters, while surface barrier detectors are used for the spectroscopy of alpha particles. Effects on the spectrum shape induced by recoil and polarization phenomena as well as large widths of the intermediate states are discussed. (14 refs).

Abstract

Total beta-decay energies were measured by a beta-gamma coincidence method for /sup 76/Rb, /sup 78/Rb, /sup 118/Cs, /sup 120/Cs and /sup 122/Cs. The resulting Q-values and masses together with experimental data from the literature are compared with mass formulae, with particular emphasis on Kr and Rb isotopes in the N=Z region.

Abstract

Experiments on the nucleus /sup 100/Sr are reviewed. The activity was produced by fission with 600 MeV protons on a uranium target and after mass separation studied by gamma-ray and conversion-electron spectroscopy and by nanosecond lifetime measurements. The theoretical implications of these results are discussed on the basis of a Nilsson- Strutinsky calculation. (14 refs).

Abstract

Reviews experiments on /sup 11/Li that have led to the observation of two new active decay modes: beta-delayed two- and three-neutron emission. The 2n decay mode is also observed in /sup 30,31,32/Na and very recent results, reported for the first time, shown that it is detectable also in /sup 100/Rb with p/sub 2n//p/sub n/=0.027+or-0.007.
