Abstract

The NEXT-White detector, a high-pressure gaseous xenon time projection chamber, demonstrated the excellence of this technology for future neutrinoless double beta decay searches using photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) to measure energy and silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) to extract topology information. This analysis uses $^{83m}\text{Kr}$ data from the NEXT-White detector to measure and understand the energy resolution that can be obtained with the SiPMs, rather than with PMTs. The energy resolution obtained of (10.9 $\pm$ 0.6) $\%$, full-width half-maximum, is slightly larger than predicted based on the photon statistics resulting from very low light detection coverage of the SiPM plane in the NEXT-White detector. The difference in the predicted and measured resolution is attributed to poor corrections, which are expected to be improved with larger statistics. Furthermore, the noise of the SiPMs is shown to not be a dominant factor in the energy resolution and may be negligible when noise subtraction is applied appropriately, for high-energy events or larger SiPM coverage detectors. These results, which are extrapolated to estimate the response of large coverage SiPM planes, are promising for the development of future, SiPM-only, readout planes that can offer imaging and achieve similar energy resolution to that previously demonstrated with PMTs.

Abstract

The imaging of individual Ba$^{2+}$ ions in high pressure xenon gas is one possible way to attain background-free sensitivity to neutrinoless double beta decay and hence establish the Majorana nature of the neutrino. In this paper we demonstrate selective single Ba$^{2+}$ ion imaging inside a high-pressure xenon gas environment. Ba$^{2+}$ ions chelated with molecular chemosensors are resolved at the gas-solid interface using a diffraction-limited imaging system with scan area of 1$\times$1~cm$^2$ located inside 10~bar of xenon gas. This new form of microscopy represents an important enabling step in the development of barium tagging for neutrinoless double beta decay searches in $^{136}$Xe, as well as a new tool for studying the photophysics of fluorescent molecules and chemosensors at the solid-gas interface.

Abstract

Abstract: We report measurements of the transverse diffusion of electrons in P-10 gas (90% Ar, 10% CH4) in a laboratory-scale time projection chamber (TPC) utilizing a novel pixelated signal capture and digitization technique known as Q-Pix. The Q-Pix method incorporates a precision switched integrating transimpedance amplifier whose output is compared to a threshold voltage. Upon reaching the threshold, a comparator sends a 'reset' signal, initiating a discharge of the integrating capacitor. The time difference between successive resets is inversely proportional to the average current at the pixel in that time interval, and the number of resets is directly proportional to the total collected charge. We developed a 16-channel Q-Pix prototype fabricated from commercial off-the-shelf components and coupled them to 16 concentric annular anode electrodes to measure the spatial extent of the electron swarm that reaches the anode after drifting through the uniform field of the TPC. The swarm is produced at a gold photocathode using pulsed UV light. The measured transverse diffusion agrees with simulations in PyBoltz across a range of operating pressures (200–1500 Torr). These results demonstrate that a Q-Pix readout can successfully reconstruct the ionization topology in a TPC.

Abstract

Noble element time projection chambers are a leading technology for rare event detection in physics, such as for dark matter and neutrinoless double beta decay searches. Time projection chambers typically assign event position in the drift direction using the relative timing of prompt scintillation and delayed charge collection signals, allowing for reconstruction of an absolute position in the drift direction. In this paper, alternate methods for assigning event drift distance via quantification of electron diffusion in a pure high pressure xenon gas time projection chamber are explored. Data from the NEXT-White detector demonstrate the ability to achieve good position assignment accuracy for both high- and low-energy events. Abstract

Using Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) Operational Amplifiers (OpAmps) and Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) transistors, we present a demonstration of the Q-Pix front-end architecture, a novel readout solution for kiloton-scale Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LArTPC) detectors. The Q-Pix scheme employs a Charge-Integrate/Reset process based on the Least Action principle, enabling pixel-scale self-triggering charge collection and processing, minimizing energy consumption, and maximizing data compression. We examine the architecture's sensitivity, linearity, noise, and other features at the circuit board level and draw comparisons to SPICE simulations. Furthermore, we highlight the resemblance between the Q-Pix front-end and Sigma-Delta modulator, emphasizing that digital data processing techniques for Sigma-Delta can be directly applied to Q-Pix, resulting in enhanced signal-to-noise performance. These insights will inform the development of Q-Pix front-end designs in integrated circuits (IC) and guide data collection and processing for future large-scale LArTPC detectors in neutrino physics and other high-energy physics experiments.

Abstract

NEXT-100 is currently being constructed at the Laboratorio Subterr\'aneo de Canfranc in the Spanish Pyrenees and will search for neutrinoless double beta decay using a high-pressure gaseous time projection chamber (TPC) with 100 kg of xenon. Charge amplification is carried out via electroluminescence (EL) which is the process of accelerating electrons in a high electric field region causing secondary scintillation of the medium proportional to the initial charge. The NEXT-100 EL and cathode regions are made from tensioned hexagonal meshes of 1 m diameter. This paper describes the design, characterization, and installation of these parts for NEXT-100. Simulations of the electric field are performed to model the drift and amplification of ionization electrons produced in the detector under various EL region alignments and rotations. Measurements of the electrostatic breakdown voltage in air characterize performance under high voltage conditions and identify breakdown points. The electrostatic deflection of the mesh is quantified and fit to a first-principles mechanical model. Measurements were performed with both a standalone test EL region and with the NEXT-100 EL region before its installation in the detector. Abstract

A convolutional neural network approach is then used to quantify diffusion for longer tracks (E$\geq$1.5MeV), yielding a precision of 3cm on the event barycenter. The precision achieved with these methods indicates the feasibility energy calibrations of better than 1% FWHM at Q$_{\beta\beta}$ in pure xenon, as well as the potential for event fiducialization in large future detectors using an alternate method that does not rely on primary scintillation., Comment: 18 pages, 16 figures

10. The Role of Embodied Scaffolding in Revealing 'Enactive Potentialities' in Intergenerational Science Exploration

Abstract

Although adults are known to play an important role in young children's development, little work has focused on the enactive features of scaffolding in informal learning settings, and the embodied dynamics of intergenerational interaction. To address this gap, this paper undertakes a microinteractional analysis to examine intergenerational collaborative interaction in a science museum setting. The paper presents a fine-grained moment-by-moment analysis of video-recorded interaction of children and their adult carers around science-themed objects. Taking an enactive cognition perspective, the analysis enables access to subtle shifts in interactants' perception, action, gesture, and movement to examine how young children engage with exhibits, and the role adult action plays in supporting young children's engagement with exhibits and developing ideas about science. Our findings demonstrate that intergenerational "embodied scaffolding" is instrumental in making "enactive potentialities" in the environment more accessible for children, thus deepening and enriching children's engagement with science. Adult action is central to revealing scientific dimensions of objects' interaction and relationships in ways that expose novel types of perception and action opportunities in shaping science experiences and meaning making. This has implications for science education practices since it foregrounds not only "doing" science, through active hands-on activities, but also speaks to the interconnectedness between senses and the role of the body in thinking. Drawing on the findings, this paper also offers design implications for informal science learning environments.

11. Quality Culture at Nordic Universities

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate common features and ways of understanding quality culture (QC) within higher education institutions (HEIs) in Nordic countries. While the concept of QC is commonly accepted and often used, its meaning is not always clear. This paper focuses on how Nordic universities frame QC in their internal documentation. The Nordic context was chosen due to the close cooperation on quality issues that characterise HEIs within the Nordic region. The discussion section of this paper outlines QC in relation to quality assurance (QA) among HEIs within the European and Nordic regions. Sixteen universities participated in the study by sharing documents describing their QCs. The data were analysed using qualitative content analysis and discussed from different perspectives, such as regarding how the universities use the concept of QC and how QC is created. Based on the results, a model was created that provides an overview of how QC emerges and how the concept is implemented in documentation. It is hoped that the results will both contribute useful input to the ongoing collaboration on quality issues among HEIs in the Nordic region and will also be useful in enhancing QC at universities in other regions.

Abstract

We demonstrate indirect electric-field control of ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) in devices that integrate the low-loss, molecule-based, room-temperature ferrimagnet vanadium tetracyanoethylene (V[TCNE]$_{x \sim 2}$) mechanically coupled to PMN-PT piezoelectric transducers. Upon straining the V[TCNE]$_x$ films, the FMR frequency is tuned by more than 6 times the resonant linewidth with no change in Gilbert damping for samples with $\alpha = 6.5 \times 10^{-5}$. We show this tuning effect is due to a strain-dependent magnetic anisotropy in the films and find the magnetoelastic coefficient $|\lambda_S| \sim (1 - 4.4)$ ppm, backed by theoretical predictions from DFT calculations and magnetoelastic theory. Noting the rapidly expanding application space for strain-tuned FMR, we define a new metric for magnetostrictive materials, $\textit{magnetostrictive agility}$, given by the ratio of the magnetoelastic coefficient to the FMR linewidth. This agility allows for a direct comparison between magnetostrictive materials in terms of their comparative efficacy for magnetoelectric applications requiring ultra-low loss magnetic resonance modulated by strain. With this metric, we show V[TCNE]$_x$ is competitive with other magnetostrictive materials including YIG and Terfenol-D. This combination of ultra-narrow linewidth and magnetostriction in a system that can be directly integrated into functional devices without requiring heterogeneous integration in a thin-film geometry promises unprecedented functionality for electric-field tuned microwave devices ranging from low-power, compact filters and circulators to emerging applications in quantum information science and technology.

Abstract

The origin of high-energy cosmic rays, atomic nuclei that continuously impact Earth's atmosphere, has been a mystery for over a century. Due to deflection in interstellar magnetic fields, cosmic rays from the Milky Way arrive at Earth from random directions. However, near their sources and during propagation, cosmic rays interact with matter and produce high-energy neutrinos. We search for neutrino emission using machine learning techniques applied to ten years of data from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. We identify neutrino emission from the Galactic plane at the 4.5$\sigma$ level of significance, by comparing diffuse emission models to a background-only hypothesis. Abstract

Abstract Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) occurs in approximately 30% of people with highly symptomatic post-COVID-19 condition (PCC). It involves several symptoms that limit physical and psychological functions and cause reduced quality of life. Evidence for different treatments of POTS and PCC is limited, and this study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of individually tailored physical exercise. The secondary aim of the study was to evaluate the preliminary effectiveness of this intervention. Twenty-six participants (81% female, median age 41 years) were enrolled and performed individually tailored endurance and strength training, with progression, for twelve weeks. During the intervention period, the participants had weekly support from a physiotherapist. Feasibility was evaluated with good compliance, with 76% adherence to exercise prescription and 96% completing the study protocol. The treatment was safe, and the evaluation methods (questionnaires, physical assessments, and accelerometer monitoring) were judged to be feasible. After the intervention, improvements in symptom burden as well as in psychological and physical functions were observed. In conclusion, future randomized controlled trials can be performed with only minor adjustments and could include questionnaires, physical assessment and accelerometer monitoring, which were demonstrated as feasible by this study.

18. Effects of an exercise intervention in primary care after robot-assisted radical cystectomy for urinary bladder cancer: a randomised controlled trial

Abstract

Abstract Introduction After radical cystectomy physical activity is important to reduce risk of complications, but patients with urinary bladder cancer have difficulties in achieving general recommendations on physical activity and exercise. The aim of this randomised controlled trial was therefore to evaluate the effects of a physical exercise programme in primary care, following discharge from hospital after robot-assisted radical cystectomy for urinary bladder cancer. Materials and Methods Patients with urinary bladder cancer scheduled for robot-assisted radical cystectomy at Karolinska University Hospital, Sweden between September 2019 and October 2022 were invited to join the study. At discharge, they were randomised to intervention or active control group. The intervention group was planned to start exercise with physiotherapist in primary care during the third week; the programme included aerobic and strengthening exercises, twice a week for 12 weeks, and daily walks. The control group received unsupervised home-based exercise with daily walks and a sit-to-stand exercise. Assessments were conducted before surgery, at discharge and after four months regarding the primary outcome physical function (Six-minute walk test), and secondary outcomes physical activity, pain, health-related quality of life, fatigue, and psychological wellbeing. Results Ninety patients were included, mean (sd) age 71.5 (8.5) years. An intention-to-treat analysis showed no intervention effect on the primary outcome physical function, or on pain or psychological wellbeing, but effect on physical activity with a difference from discharge to four months with a median (IQR) of 4790 (3000) and 2670 (4340) daily steps in the intervention and control group, respectively (p = 0.046), and for fatigue, and health-related quality of life, in favour of the intervention group. Conclusion Both the intervention and control groups improved physical function, but the patients who exercised in primary care experienced additional positive effects on physical activity, fatigue, and health-related quality of life. Hence, exercise in primary care after discharge from hospital could be a promising method after radical cystectomy for urinary bladder cancer. Abstract Background Artificial intelligence (AI) holds significant promise for enhancing the efficiency and safety of medical history-taking and triage within primary care. However, there remains a dearth of knowledge concerning the practical implementation of AI systems for these purposes, particularly in the context of healthcare leadership. This study explores the experiences of healthcare leaders regarding the barriers to implementing an AI application for automating medical history-taking and triage in Swedish primary care, as well as the actions they took to overcome these barriers. Furthermore, the study seeks to provide insights that can inform the development of AI implementation strategies for healthcare. Methods We adopted an inductive qualitative approach, conducting semi-structured interviews with 13 healthcare leaders representing seven primary care units across three regions in Sweden. The collected data were subsequently analysed utilizing thematic analysis. Our study adhered to the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research to ensure transparent and comprehensive reporting. Results The study identified implementation barriers encountered by healthcare leaders across three domains: (1) healthcare professionals, (2) organization, and (3) technology. The first domain involved professional scepticism and resistance, the second involved adapting traditional units for digital care, and the third inadequacies in AI application functionality and system integration. To navigate around these barriers, the leaders took steps to (1) address inexperience and fear and reduce professional scepticism, (2) align implementation with digital maturity and guide patients towards digital care, and (3) refine and improve the AI application and adapt to the current state of AI application development. Conclusion The study provides valuable empirical insights into the implementation of AI for automating medical history-taking and triage in primary care as experienced by healthcare leaders. It identifies the barriers to this implementation and how healthcare leaders aligned their actions to overcome them. While progress was evident in overcoming professional-related and organizational-related barriers, unresolved technical complexities highlight the importance of AI implementation strategies that consider how leaders handle AI implementation in situ based on practical wisdom and tacit understanding. This underscores the necessity of a holistic approach for the successful implementation of AI in healthcare.

Abstract

Abstract Background Cardiac surgery is associated with a period of postoperative bed rest. Although early mobilization is a vital component of postoperative care, for preventing complications and enhancing physical recovery, there is limited data on routine practices and optimal strategies for early mobilization after cardiac surgery. The aim of the study was to define the timing for the first initiation of out of bed mobilization after cardiac surgery and to describe the type of mobilization performed. Methods In this observational study, the first mobilization out of bed was studied in a subset of adult cardiac surgery patients (n = 290) from five of the eight university hospitals performing cardiothoracic surgery in Sweden. Over a five-week period, patients were evaluated for mobilization routines within the initial 24 h after cardiac surgery. Data on the timing of the first mobilization after the end of surgery, as well as the duration and type of mobilization, were documented. Additionally, information on patient characteristics, anesthesia, and surgery was collected. Results A total of 277 patients (96%) were mobilized out of bed within the first 24 h, and 39% of these patients were mobilized within 6 h after surgery. The time to first mobilization after the end of surgery was 8.7 ± 5.5 h; median of 7.1 [4.5–13.1] hours, with no significant differences between coronary artery bypass grafting, valve surgery, aortic surgery or other procedures (p = 0.156). First mobilization session lasted 20 ± 41 min with median of 10 [1–11]. Various kinds of first-time mobilization, including sitting on the edge of the bed, standing, and sitting in a chair, were revealed. Abstract

Objective. The goal of this study was to explore the patient-physical therapist interaction and the physical therapist's experience of the introductory session for mechanical insufflation-exsufflation (Ml-E) device treatment for patients with progressive neurological disease. Methods. Qualitative content analysis of participant's observation of interaction between patients and physical therapists during 9 Ml-E introduction sessions in different clinical care settings and 10 follow-up interviews with 6 physical therapists. Results. The introduction of Ml-E emerged as a process of instilling a sense of security in the patient. The process can be described in 4 steps: (1) gain understanding by being responsive to the person's whole life situation; (2) share knowledge and expectations in a respectful and permissive way; (3) introduce the device in a gentle and reciprocal interactivity; and (4) adapt to home use in an inclusive dialog with the patient and their significant others. Physical therapists described a need for assurance to instill a sense of security in the patient, implying a need for confidence, competent peers, guiding yet flexible routines, and emotional support. Conclusion. Physical therapists have a need to foster assurance in employing a person-centered approach to make a patient feel secure in the process of introducing Ml-E treatment. Multiple modes of professional knowledge were used together with action-based and relational-based ethics to facilitate a person-centered care approach. This seems to be a promising approach for providing good care when introducing Ml-E to patients. Further research is needed to explore this from the patient's perspective. Impact. This study added to the body of knowledge regarding Ml-E treatment in relation to patients. This has direct implication, particularly for inexperienced physical therapists, for informed care for the patient during introduction. Abstract

The NEXT experiment aims at the sensitive search of the neutrinoless double beta decay in $^{136}$Xe, using high-pressure gas electroluminescent time projection chambers. The NEXT-White detector is the first radiopure demonstrator of this technology, operated in the Laboratorio Subterr\'aneo de Canfranc. Achieving an energy resolution of 1% FWHM at 2.6 MeV and further background rejection by means of the topology of the reconstructed tracks, NEXT-White has been exploited beyond its original goals in order to perform a neutrinoless double beta decay search. The analysis considers the combination of 271.6 days of $^{136}$Xe-enriched data and 208.9 days of $^{136}$Xe-depleted data. A detailed background modeling and measurement has been developed, ensuring the time stability of the radiogenic and cosmogenic contributions across both data samples. Limits to the neutrinoless mode are obtained in two alternative analyses: a background-model-dependent approach and a novel direct background-subtraction technique, offering results with small dependence on the background model assumptions. With a fiducial mass of only 3.50$\pm$0.01 kg of $^{136}$Xe-enriched xenon, 90% C.L. lower limits to the neutrinoless double beta decay are found in the T$_{1/2}^{0\nu}>5.5\times10^{23}-1.3\times10^{24}$ yr range, depending on the method. The presented techniques stand as a proof-of-concept for the searches to be implemented with larger NEXT detectors.

Abstract

With the aim to stimulate future research, we describe an exploratory study of a railway rescheduling problem. A widely used approach in practice and state of the art is to decompose these complex problems by geographical scope. Instead, we propose defining a core problem that restricts a rescheduling problem in response to a disturbance to only trains that need to be rescheduled, hence restricting the scope in both time and space. In this context, the difficulty resides in defining a scoper that can predict a subset of train services that will be affected by a given disturbance. We report preliminary results using the Flatland simulation environment that highlights the potential and challenges of this idea. We provide an extensible playground open-source implementation based on the Flatland railway environment and Answer-Set Programming.

Abstract

The search for neutrinoless double beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) remains one of the most compelling experimental avenues for the discovery in the neutrino sector. Electroluminescent gas-phase time projection chambers are well suited to $0\nu\beta\beta$ searches due to their intrinsically precise energy resolution and topological event identification capabilities. Scalability to ton- and multi-ton masses requires readout of large-area electroluminescent regions with fine spatial resolution, low radiogenic backgrounds, and a scalable data acquisition system. This paper presents a detector prototype that records event topology in an electroluminescent xenon gas TPC via VUV image-intensified cameras. Abstract

In this work, we study the relationship between slip localizations and local orientation gradients in a polycrystalline material. We employ a 3D spatially resolved crystal plasticity-based micromechanics technique that includes explicit intragranular slip band modeling, called SB-FFT (slip band fast Fourier transform). EBSD analysis reveals the development of slip localizations, with a rare few generating relatively large local orientation gradients in the neighboring grain. Our results find that several conditions need to be met simultaneously for large zone of intense orientation gradients to form within a grain and with this, offer an explanation for their scarcity. These conditions entail the localization of slip to a sufficient high intensity in the grain neighbor, the grain experiencing higher stress levels than the average stress of its nearest grain neighborhood, and a crystallographic orientation suitable for activating secondary slip under the stress field produced by the slip localization. Analysis of the 3D orientation distributions as they evolve in strain indicates that orientation gradient zones cause the distribution to become highly skewed, with the extreme tails extending further as strain increases. The numerical simulations with various grain neighborhoods show that this feature is, however, not a sufficient signature for such orientation gradients associated with slip localizations since triple junctions or quadruple points can also produce intragranular orientation gradients that have a similar impact on the grain orientation distribution. Last, comparison with several previously proposed slip transmission criteria indicates that this phenomenon is not relevant, contrary to current belief.

Abstract

We present a tunable metal ion beam that delivers controllable ion currents in the picoamp range for testing of dry-phase ion sensors. Ion beams are formed by sequential atomic evaporation and single or multiple electron impact ionization, followed by acceleration into a sensing region. Controllability of the ionic charge state is achieved through tuning of electrode potentials that influence the retention time in the ionization region. Barium, lead, and cobalt samples have been used to test the system, with ion currents identified and quantified using a quadrupole mass analyzer. Realization of a clean $\mathrm{Ba^{2+}}$ ion beam within a bench-top system represents an important technical advance toward the development and characterization of barium tagging systems for neutrinoless double beta decay searches in xenon gas. This system also provides a testbed for investigation of novel ion sensing methodologies for environmental assay applications, with dication beams of Pb$^{2+}$ and Cd$^{2+}$ also demonstrated for this purpose.

42. Finite Element Analysis versus Empirical Modal Analysis of a Basketball Rim and Backboard

Abstract

The first goal of this research was to document the process of using the MODAL analysis system of the ANSYS 2024R1 student edition to create a finite element model of the modes and frequencies of vibration of one basketball rim and backboard design. This finite element model included the use of steel for the rim and its mount, a tempered glass backboard, and an aluminum frame behind the backboard. After a mesh was created, fixed support boundary conditions were applied to the four corners of the aluminum frame, followed by the theoretical modal analysis. The second goal was to validate this model by comparing the finite element calculated mode shapes and frequencies to the empirical modal analysis previously measured at the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. Five mode shapes and frequencies agreed rather well between the theoretical finite element analysis and previously published empirical modal analysis, specifically where the rim was vibrating in the vertical direction, which was the direction that the accelerometer was aligned for the empirical modal analysis. These five modes were addressed from a finite element model validation standpoint by a 99.5% confidence in a 98.09% cross-correlation with empirical modal analysis data, and from a verification standpoint by employing a refined-mesh. However, three theoretical mode shapes missed by the empirical modal analysis were found where the vibration of the rim was confined to the horizontal plane, which was orthogonal to the orientation of our accelerometer.

Abstract Background To translate and culturally adapt the Children’s Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ) to a Swedish version, CSHQ-SWE, and to assess its validity and reliability for use with children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Methods A total of 84 children with ADHD (51 boys and 33 girls; 6–12 years) and parents (7 men and 77 women; 28–51 years) were included in the study. CSHQ was translated and culturally adapted to Swedish, and assessed for concurrent validity with sleep actigraphy (analyzed by Kendall’s Tau) and for reliability by internal consistency (analyzed by McDonald’s Omega H). Face and content validity was evaluated by parents (n = 4) and healthcare professionals (n = 6) qualitatively (comprehensiveness, relevance, and comprehensibility assessed by interviews and analyzed by thematic analysis) and quantitatively (analyzed by content validity ratio and content validity index for 33 items and four non-scored inquiries). Results Parent-reported sleep problems (CSHQ-SWE total score) were moderately correlated with less “Sleep Efficiency” (Tau = −0.305; p 0.700). Comprehensiveness, relevance, and comprehensibility of CSHQ-SWE were satisfactory overall. Content validity ratio was 0.80 to 1.00 for six items, 0.00 to 0.60 for 22 items, and

Abstract

Abstract Noble element time projection chambers are a leading technology for rare event detection in physics, such as for dark matter and neutrinoless double beta decay searches. Time projection chambers typically assign event position in the drift direction using the relative timing of prompt scintillation and delayed charge collection signals, allowing for reconstruction of an absolute position in the drift direction. In this paper, alternate methods for assigning event drift distance via quantification of electron diffusion in a pure high pressure xenon gas time projection chamber are explored. Data from the NEXT-White detector demonstrate the ability to achieve good position assignment accuracy for both high- and low-energy events. Using point-like energy deposits from $$^{83\textrm{m}}$$ 83 m Kr calibration electron captures ( $$E\sim 45$$ E ∼ 45 keV), the position of origin of low-energy events is determined to 2 cm precision with bias $$< 1~$$ < 1 mm. A convolutional neural network approach is then used to quantify diffusion for longer tracks ( $$E\ge ~1.5$$ E ≥ 1.5 MeV), from radiogenic electrons, yielding a precision of 3 cm on the event barycenter. The precision achieved with these methods indicates the feasibility energy calibrations of better than 1% FWHM at Q $$_{\beta \beta }$$ β β in pure xenon, as well as the potential for event fiducialization in large future detectors using an alternate method that does not rely on primary scintillation.

Abstract Therapeutic antibodies have been developed to target amyloid-beta (Aβ), and some of these slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). However, they can also cause adverse events known as amyloid-related imaging abnormalities with edema (ARIA-E). We investigated therapeutic Aβ antibody binding to cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) fibrils isolated from human leptomeningeal tissue to study whether this related to the ARIA-E frequencies previously reported by clinical trials. The binding of Aβ antibodies to CAA Aβ fibrils was evaluated in vitro using immunoprecipitation, surface plasmon resonance, and direct binding assay. Marked differences in Aβ antibody binding to CAA fibrils were observed. Solanezumab and crenezumab showed negligible CAA fibril binding and these antibodies have no reported ARIA-E cases. Lecanemab showed a low binding to CAA fibrils, consistent with its relatively low ARIA-E frequency of 12.6%, while aducanumab, bapineuzumab, and gantenerumab all showed higher binding to CAA fibrils and substantially higher ARIA-E frequencies (25–35%). An ARIA-E frequency of 24% was reported for donanemab, and its binding to CAA fibrils correlated with the amount of pyroglutamate-modified Aβ present. The findings of this study support the proposal that Aβ antibody-CAA interactions may relate to the ARIA-E frequency observed in patients treated with Aβ-based immunotherapies.

Abstract

We report three searches for high energy neutrino emission from astrophysical objects using data recorded with IceCube between 2011 and 2020. Improvements over previous work include new neutrino reconstruction and data calibration methods. In one search, the positions of 110 a priori selected gamma-ray sources were analyzed individually for a possible surplus of neutrinos over atmospheric and cosmic background expectations. We found an excess of $79_{-20}^{+22}$ neutrinos associated with the nearby active galaxy NGC 1068 at a significance of 4.2$\,\sigma$. The excess, which is spatially consistent with the direction of the strongest clustering of neutrinos in the Northern Sky, is interpreted as direct evidence of TeV neutrino emission from a nearby active galaxy. The inferred flux exceeds the potential TeV gamma-ray flux by at least one order of magnitude., Comment: Minor adjustment to the pdf metadata. Paper content remains unchanged. Abstract

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is an excellent diffuse reflector widely used in light collection systems for particle physics experiments. In noble element systems, it is often coated with tetraphenyl butadiene (TPB) to allow detection of vacuum ultraviolet scintillation light. In this work this dependence is investigated for PTFE coated with TPB in air for light of wavelengths of 200~nm, 260~nm, and 450~nm. The results show that TPB-coated PTFE has a reflectance of approximately 92\% for thicknesses ranging from 5~mm to 10~mm at 450~nm, with negligible variation as a function of thickness within this range. A cross-check of these results using an argon chamber supports the conclusion that the change in thickness from 5~mm to 10~mm does not affect significantly the light response at 128~nm. Our results indicate that pieces of TPB-coated PTFE thinner than the typical 10~mm can be used in particle physics detectors without compromising the light signal.

Abstract Economic losses due to hailstorms across US corn fields occur every year. Hailstorms result in leaf defoliation, decreasing photosynthetic area and impairing carbon assimilation and crop yield for all corn (Zea mays L.) development stages. However, more attention is often given to stand reductions rather than damage to stems or leaf defoliation. During the 2014 growing season, a natural hail event affected many areas of eastern Nebraska. Twelve affected corn fields were surveyed and included in this study. An injury score scale (1–5) was developed based on various injury and severity levels before the V6 (6‐leaf corn growth stage) (six‐collared leaves). Scores were assigned to affected fields approximately 10–15 days after the hailstorm. At the end of the growing season, ears were harvested, and grain yield per plant was determined. BackgroundAcute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common malignancy in childhood, but the prognosis has remarkably improved over the last 50 years in high-income countries, and thus, there is a focus on long-term health outcomes following survival and how to best provide health care support to adult long-term survivors of childhood ALL to prevent and handle potential health problems. Digital health interventions are promising to deliver feasible health promotion and prevention programs. This is particularly relevant for ensuring long-term follow-up in cases where continuous contact with oncology care may be disrupted. Moreover, these interventions are beneficial in reaching geographically dispersed target groups and overcoming the time constraints of everyday life that often hinder participation in such programs. ObjectiveThis study aimed to fill the gaps in existing research on adult long-term survivors of childhood ALL and provide formative data that can inform the development of formalized follow-up services designed to meet the needs of these survivors in ways that align with their preferences for digital health interventions. MethodsIn this cross-sectional national study, adult survivors (aged ≥18 years) of childhood ALL for over 10 years after diagnosis were compared to their siblings in terms of mental and physical health-related factors, including sleep, stress, anxiety, and depression (Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale 21 [DASS-21]); several dimensions of fatigue (Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory 20 [MFI-20]); work ability (Work Ability Index); chronic pain; and prevalences of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, headache or migraine, and rheumatic disease. ResultsOverall, 426 of 855 eligible ALL survivors responded (mean age 30.9, SD 7.7 years), and they participated at an average of 24 (SD 6.9) years after ALL diagnosis. Siblings (n=135; mean age 31.5, SD 7.7 years) acted as controls. Sleep quality, sleep quantity, and mean work ability scores were significantly lower, and physical fatigue, reduced motivation, and reduced activity scores were higher in ALL survivors than in siblings. There were no significant differences between the groups in terms of BMI and prevalence of chronic pain, depression, anxiety, or stress. Physical and psychological complications were more frequent among adult ALL survivors who had received hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) than among those who had not received HSCT. ConclusionsOur nationwide cross-sectional study addressed the scarcity of knowledge regarding the self-reported health outcomes of adult long-term survivors of childhood ALL. We highlighted significant disparities within this population and emphasized the potential of comprehensive digital interventions that target vitality, sleep quality, fatigue, and psychosocial well-being to enhance well-being and bolster the capacity for managing chronic health conditions in this target group. Such an intervention would align with the needs of this target group, which is a prerequisite for successfully incorporating technology into the daily lives of survivors of childhood ALL.
