23. EVALUATION OF TIGERNUT ACCESSIONS IN GHANA FOR PROXIMATE AND MINERAL COMPOSITION.

Abstract

Tigernut (Cyperus esculentus L.) is a nutritious, yet underutilised crop in Ghana. The objective of this study was to characterise Ghanaian tigernut accessions for proximate and mineral composition, as a guide for breeders for varietal development. Field and laboratory studies were conducted on 24 tigernut accessions from major growing areas of Ghana. The accessions were cultivated during the minor the growing season (September - November), at the Multipurpose Nursery of the University of Education, Winneba, Asante Mampong in Ghana. The nuts were analysed for proximate (carbohydrate, energy, moisture, ether extract, crude fiber, crude protein and ash) and mineral (potassium, phosphorus and calcium) composition. There were significant (P<0.05) differences among accessions for all traits studied. Accessions were clustered in a dendrogram by colour and geographical origin and PC1 and PC2 explained more than 80% of the total variations among the accessions, with carbohydrate and energy being the major contributors to the total variation. Accessions DY, BKB, KAB, TPY, CCY, WY2 and WY1, which recorded high levels of proximate and mineral compositions, may be considered for breeding programmes to provide high nutrient varieties of tigernut in Ghana. 28. Agromorphological characterisation of Gboma eggplant, an indigenous fruit and leafy vegetable in Ghana

Abstract

Gboma (Solanum macrocarpon L.) is an important leafy and fruit vegetable in Ghana. Despite its nutritional and medicinal properties, and consumption by many ethnic groups in the country, the crop is underdeveloped. Theobjective of this study was to characterise diversity among local landraces of Solanum macrocarpon in Ghana using agro-morphological descriptors in order to identify outstanding accessions which could be involved in further breeding programmes. A total of 23 accessions collected from different agro-ecological zones in Ghana were characterised using morphological descriptors. The accessions varied significantly in days to 50% flowering,days to fruiting, stem girth, fruit weight, number of seeds per fruit, weight of leaves per plant and plant height. Principal components analysis based on the morphological traits showed that PC1 for 99% of the total variationwas mainly defined by number of leaves, number of branches, plant height, stem girth and number of leaves per plant. The accessions evaluated were grouped under five clusters. The clustering pattern indicated that intercluster distance was higher than intra-cluster, indicating wide genetic diversity among the accessions. Correlation analyses between morphological traits revealed positive and negative relationships, indicating predictable success for eventual breeding activities. Accessions CAGRICW3, CAGRICW4, CAGRICN2 and CAGRICA4 had more leaves and fruits, and could be used as potential donors for hybridisation programme to develop variety with higher yield potential.Key Words: Inter-cluster distance, Solanum macrocarpon

29. Resistance to post-harvest microbial rot in yam: Integration of genotype and storage methods

Abstract

Post-harvest microbial rot is an important disease that causes severe losses in yam (Dioscorea spp.) storage. Rot from microbial infection of healthy yam tubers reduces their table quality and renders them unappealing to consumers. A study was carried out at Bimbilla in the Nanumba North District of Ghana to evaluate possible interactions of yam genotypes and storage methods for controlling internal rot in yam. Four local varieties (Labalkor, Kplondzo, Olordor and Fushiebila) were studied with four storage methods (barn, pit, platform and heap methods) in a 4 x 4 factorially arrangement. There were significant (P< 0.001) differences among genotypes for resistance to internal rot, with Olordor and Kplondzo recording the lowest internal microbial rot, suggesting their potential in resisting the disease. There were also significant differences (P< 0.05) among the storage methods, with barn and platform being most suitable in reducing the incidence of internal rot in yam. The interaction between yam genotypes and storage methods was not significant (P> 0.05).Key Words: Barn, Dioscorea spp., internal rot Le pourrissement microbien après la récolte est une maladie importante qui cause de pertes sévères dans le stockage des ignames (Dioscorea spp.). Le pourrissement dû à l’infection microbienne des ignames réduit leur qualité et la préférence des consommateurs. Une étude était menée à Bimbilla dans le District de Nanumba Nord au Ghana pour évaluer des interactions possibles des génotypes d’ignames et des méthodes de stockage pour le contrôle du pourrissement interne dans l’igname. Quatre variétés locales, (Labalkor, Kplondzo, Olordor et Fushiebila) étaient étudiées avec quatre méthodes de stockages (méthodes grange à igname, silo-fosse, plate forme et tassement) dans un arrangement factoriel 4 x 4. Il n’y avait pas aussi de différences significatives (P< 0.05) parmi les méthodes de stockage, avec grange à igname et plate forme ayant été les mieux indiquées dans la réduction de l’incidence du pourrissement interne des ignames. Abstract

Cleome gynandra is one of the most promising African leafy vegetables consumed in most parts of Africa. The crop is a rich source of vitamins A and C and minerals such as calcium, iron, magnesium and protein. The leaves and seeds of spider plant are used in indigenous medicine in several countries. Despite the numerous nutritive benefits and ethnopharmacological uses of the plant, C. gynandra is still underutilized due to lack of awareness and promotion of production technologies and utilization. Available information is limited and short on several relevant and rudimentary components. Hence, this review focuses on the current knowledge on C. gynandra, with regards to its botany, ecology, cultivation systems, utilization, nutraceutical properties as well as the breeding avenues that will contribute to promoting the species, aimed at ensuring food and nutritional security and efficient management of its genetic resources. Breeding programmes aimed at minimizing the bitterness of the leaves so to arouse the interest of consumers, and the mechanisms involved in the responses and adaptation of C. gynandra as a C4 plant to salinity stress, were also explored. Abstract

Solenostemon rotundifolius is a very important tuber staple for both rural and urban communities in West Africa. The crop is rich in nutrients as compared with other root and tuber crops and is germane to ensuring food and nutritional security. It is also of great medicinal importance and is known to lower blood cholesterol levels as well as fend off fungal and viral infections in humans. However, very little is known about the breeding avenues necessary to improve upon the crop. Also, not much interest has been generated with regards to production of the crop owing to its low yield and small tuber size. This review elucidates the current knowledge and breeding avenues for increasing the genetic base as well as improving upon the existing cultivars of the crop. Breeding objectives may be geared towards the development of high yielding cultivars with bigger tuber sizes in order to increase the marketable value of the crop. Tissue culture avenues should be exploited to induce somaclonal variants, so as to increase the genetic diversity necessary for the improvement of the crop. Chemical mutagens could be employed to alter the size and number of tubers that the crop produces. Present ex situ and in situ conservation strategies need to be reinforced. 49. Genetic variation of pollen functional quality traits and their relation to sexual compatibility in kola (Cola nitida(Vent.) Schott & Endl.)

Abstract

Kola [Cola nitida (Vent.) Schott & Endl.] production has a bottleneck of self-incompatibility resulting in poor fruit set. To ensure efficient fertilization and fruit set of kola varieties, this study was carried out to determine the genetic variability in pollen quality traits of kola genotypes and to decipher their relationship with sexual compatibility in kola. Pollen grain production, pollen grain germination ability, pollen tube length and subsequent pod set and pseudo-pod set were quantified in a set of four germplasm collections of Cola nitidaand the difference in constitutive accessions assessed through generalized linear models and Kruskal-wallis tests. Regression analyses were conducted between pod set and pollen functional quality traits to examine the strength and significance of the relationships between these parameters. Our findings revealed significant (P < 0.001) differences among the genotypes of kola germplasm collections for pollen viability, pollen germination and pollen tube length. The positive correlation between pollen germination and pod set was significant (P < 0.05) for genotypes in germplasms GX1, MX2 and Bunso progeny, but not for those in germplasm JX1. The correlation between pollen tube length and pod set was also significant (P < 0.05) for MX2 and Bunso progeny collections. Individual genotypes with high pollen quality identified in this study could be used as parents to develop kola hybrids with enhanced pollen germination and pollen tube vigor and thus enhance fruit set and seed set in kola plantations to increase profitability of farmers.
