Gastroenterologists encounter many nutrition-related disorders in their practice, yet the nutritional needs of patients with chronic gastrointestinal (GI) and liver disease are largely unaddressed by treating physicians, due to suboptimal nutrition education. To address this gap, we developed and piloted a culinary medicine course for a GI fellowship training program. The objective of this study is to describe the development, implementation, and acceptability of the course. A registered dietitian, a chef instructor, and a gastroenterology clinical professor trained in culinary medicine developed the four-class tailored curriculum and delivered the classes remotely. Each class had a theme related to commonly encountered GI disorders and included hands-on meal preparation, a nutrition lecture, and a patient case study discussion. Post-course feedback surveys were disseminated. Twenty-three GI physicians enrolled in the course and the attendance rates in classes 1-4 were 83%, 65%, 61%, and 48%, respectively. Among 15 completed feedback surveys, 80% reported that the class contents were either moderately or extremely useful and all endorsed the curriculum for other gastroenterologists. Future studies of culinary medicine programs tailored to medical specialties should identify strategies to maintain engagement and assess the impact on nutrition knowledge, competencies, and translation of these new skills to clinical practice.

Background & Objective: The role of the mothers is very important in providing care and monitor their children's health in general. Their awareness concerning quality of foods which is needed for each child's developmental stage can effect on nutritional status This Study assess the effect of an nutritional education Program on mother knowledge regarding their children nutritional status. Materials & Methods: Sixty moms were chosen from Al-Ayn Social Care Foundation International in Al-Samawah City and take on using a quasi-experimental design. The researcher used a non-probability "purposive sample" and measured the height and weight for child before calculating the body mass index. Results: The current study found a relationship between moms' educational level and knowledge regard to sociodemographic characteristics with a p-value of .001. However, there were no significant correlations observed between mothers' knowledge in the control group and their age, level of education, occupation, residency, monthly income, and sources of information. Conclusion: Following the interventional program on nutrition-related health, the level of knowledge among the mothers in the study group was enhanced. The study suggested that the nutrition education program should be offered to all moms in order to enhance their understanding and enthusiasm regarding the significance of child nutrition. Background: Obesity prevention in adolescents is a public health priority given its increasing prevalence and health impact of obesity. Aim: To evaluate the effectiveness of an educational intervention in overweight and obesity using a mHealth app in improving nutritional and sports knowledge, adherence to the Mediterranean diet, physical activity and anthropometric measurements in adolescents. Methods: A randomised controlled trial with parallel groups that included 305 adolescents. The app includes the use of effective behavioural strategies to achieve habit change. Primary outcome variables were nutritional and sports knowledge score (GeSNK), adherence to a Mediterranean diet (KidMed) and level of physical activity (PAQ-A). Results: The study included 154 participants in the mHealth group and 151 in the control group. The level of nutritional and sports knowledge was significantly higher in the mHealth group, 47 points versus 42 points. Adherence to the Mediterranean diet improved in both groups, 9 points in the mHealth group versus 8 points in the control group. Physical activity was statistically higher in the intervention group, 160 minutes/week versus 120 minutes/week. Conclusions: The mHealth intervention showed a significant improvement in the level of nutritional and sports knowledge, adherence to the Mediterranean diet and time spent on physical activity. Dementia is a debilitating condition with a disproportionate impact on women. While sex differences in longevity contribute to the disparity, the role of the female sex as a biological variable in disease progression is not yet fully elucidated. Metabolic dysfunctions are drivers of dementia etiology, and cardiometabolic diseases are among the most influential modifiable risk factors. Pregnancy is a time of enhanced vulnerability for metabolic disorders. Many dementia risk factors, such as hypertension or blood glucose dysregulation, often emerge for the first time in pregnancy. While such cardiometabolic complications in pregnancy pose a risk to the health trajectory of a woman, increasing her odds of developing type 2 diabetes or chronic hypertension, it is not fully understood how this relates to her risk for dementia. Furthermore, structural and functional changes in the maternal brain have been reported during pregnancy suggesting it is a time of neuroplasticity for the mother. Therefore, pregnancy may be a window of opportunity to optimize metabolic health and support the maternal brain. Healthy dietary patterns are known to reduce the risk of cardiometabolic diseases and have been linked to dementia prevention, yet interventions targeting cognitive function in late life have largely been unsuccessful. Earlier interventions are needed to address the underlying metabolic dysfunctions and potentially reduce the risk of dementia, and pregnancy offers an ideal opportunity to intervene. This review discusses current evidence regarding maternal brain health and the potential window of opportunity in pregnancy to use diet to address neurological health disparities for women. Distinct pedagogical approaches within medical curricula in France and in the U.S. reflect a growing recognition of the importance of nutrition to address major public health challenges. However, recent generations of medical students have expressed mixed opinions regarding nutrition education. What pedagogical approach may improve nutrition education? Despite different medical systems, students from both France and the U.S. share similar concerns and expectations, that nutrition knowledge must be embedded in the curriculum and must be engaging. Hands-on, system-based, epistemological, and multidisciplinary approaches need better articulation to forge a robust medical curriculum. In the rapidly changing contexts of medicine and public awareness, social science research may facilitate recommendations for improved nutrition education.

Achieving optimal health is an aspirational goal for the population, yet the definition of health remains unclear. The role of nutrition in health has evolved beyond correcting malnutrition and specific deficiencies and has begun to focus more on achieving and maintaining optimal health through nutrition. As such, the Council for Responsible Nutrition held its October 2022 Science in Session conference to advance this concept. Here, we summarize and discuss the findings of their Optimizing Health through Nutrition - Opportunities and Challenges workshop, including several gaps that need to be addressed to advance progress in the field. Defining and evaluating various indices of optimal health will require overcoming these key gaps. For example, there is a strong need to develop better biomarkers of nutrient status, including more accurate markers of food intake, as well as biomarkers of optimal health that account for maintaining resilience-the ability to recover from or respond to stressors without loss to physical and cognitive performance. In addition, there is a need to identify factors that drive individualized responses to nutrition, including genotype, metabotypes, and the gut microbiome, and to realize the opportunity of precision nutrition for optimal health. This review outlines hallmarks of resilience, provides current examples of nutritional factors to optimize cognitive and performance resilience, and gives an overview of various genetic, metabolic, and microbiome determinants of individualized responses.

Materials and Methods: This was a hospital-based randomised controlled trial conducted in the Department of Paediatrics at Gajra Raja Medical College, Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India. Only children hospitalised between 6 months and 59 months of age with SAM were included and randomised into an Intervention group and a Control group. In the intervention group, verbal, pictorial, and demonstration techniques were used to educate the mothers. Anthropometric measurements of malnourished children and maternal knowledge scores were compared at baseline, 15 days, and two months postdischarge. Frequency and percentage were calculated for qualitative data analysis, while mean values with standard deviations were calculated for quantitative data. Independent t-tests and paired t-tests were applied, and paired t-tests were used for within-group comparisons at different time points. Data was entered into Microsoft Excel software, and analysis was performed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 22.0. Results: The mean age of children was 1.4±0.9 years, with the majority below two years of age (86.4%). The male-to-female ratio was 1.04 (n=154 versus n=148). Most subjects belonged to lower or upper-lower socio-economic classes (75%). Mothers were commonly educated up to the primary school level (48%). ObjectivesMethodsResultsDiscussionAlthough an increasing number of studies show that time-restricted feeding may improve metabolic health, studies examining the behavioral effects of this eating pattern are limited. This study examined the effect of time-restricted feeding on impulsivity in adults.Thirty adults aged 25–41 years participated in this randomized controlled trial. The intervention group followed time-restricted feeding for 4 weeks and there was no energy restriction in the intervention group (n = 15) or control group (n = 15). Impulsivity was assessed before and after the intervention with the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale and the Go/NoGo task.The compliance rate (the percentage of days when participants had a feeding time of ≤ 8 hours/day) of the intervention group to the time-restricted feeding pattern was 92.38 ± 4.24%. The Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-11 total score of the intervention group increased from 55.53 ± 6.37 to 59.47 ± 7.67 (p = 0.02). During the Go/NoGo task, an indicator of inhibitory control, the reaction time to food and non-food stimuli was significantly shortened in the intervention group (respectively; p = 0.009, p = 0.01). Introduction: HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) continues to be a major global public health issue with no cure. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble hormone that is majorly involved in the classical function of calcium and phosphorus hemostasis and bone mineralization as well as non-classical functions of immune modulation in various viral and autoimmune diseases. A combination of both traditional risk factors, HIV- specific and antiretroviral therapy (ART)-specific contributors leave HIV-infected persons (PLHIV) at a greater risk for low 25-OH-Vitamin D levels and frank vitamin D deficiency. Aims and Setting: The current study was conducted to assess and characterize the prevalence of Vitamin D deficiency in PLHIV-on-ART attending a tertiary care hospital and assess the factors that may be affecting it. The traditional Mediterranean diet, described for the first time by Ancel Keys in the 1960s, is inspired by the eating habits and traditional foodtypical of southern italy, southern spain, and crete, and currently represents one of the most important dietary health models worldwide. thehigh content of fibers and polyunsaturated fats in cereals, vegetables, legumes and olive oil, which are part of the Mediterranean diet, show anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, aim at reducing cellular oxidative stress, responsible for several chronic diseases. Moreover, this dietis characterized by low alcohol intake (mainly red wine) and low amounts of red meat and dairy products. From a nutritional intake perspective,the Mediterranean diet guarantees a correct assumption of proteins (10-15%), carbohydrates (55-60%) and fats (25%). importantly, a strongadherence to this dietary regimen modulates the gut microbiota composition, promote eubiosis and prevents several gut-liver axis diseases. Background: Nutrition care in general practice is crucial for cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention and management, although comparison between dietary strategies is lacking. Aim: To compare the best available (most recent, relevant, and high-quality) evidence for six dietary strategies that are effective for primary prevention/absolute risk reduction of CVD. Design and setting: A pragmatic narrative review of systematic reviews of randomised trials focused on primary prevention of cardiovascular events. Method: Studies about: 1) adults without a history of cardiovascular events; 2) target dietary strategies postulated to reduce CVD risk; and 3) direct cardiovascular or all-cause mortality outcomes were included. Six dietary strategies were examined: energy deficit, Mediterranean-like diet, sodium reduction (salt reduction and substitution), the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet, alcohol reduction, and fish/fish oil consumption. Reviews were selected based on quality, recency, and relevance. Quality and certainty of evidence was assessed using GRADE. Results: Twenty-five reviews met inclusion criteria; eight were selected as the highest quality, recent, and relevant. Three dietary strategies showed modest, significant reductions in cardiovascular events: energy deficit (relative risk reduction [RRR] 30%, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 13 to 43), Mediterranean-like diet (RRR 40%, 95% CI = 20 to 55), and salt substitution (RRR 30%, 95% CI = 7 to 48). Still, some caveats remain on the effectiveness of these dietary strategies. Salt reduction, DASH diet, and alcohol reduction showed small, significant reductions in blood pressure, but no reduction in cardiovascular events. Fish/fish oil consumption showed little or no effect; supplementation of fish oil alone showed small reductions in CVD events. Conclusion: For primary prevention, energy deficit, Mediterranean-like diets, and sodium substitution have modest evidence for risk reduction of CVD events. Abstract Background Food pantry clients have high rates of food insecurity and greater risk for and prevalence of diet-related diseases. Many clients face time, resource, and physical constraints that limit their ability to prepare healthy meals using foods typically provided by pantries. We compared two novel approaches to alleviate those barriers and encourage healthier eating: meal kits, which bundle ingredients with a recipe on how to prepare a healthy meal, and nutritious no-prep meals, which can be eaten after thawing or microwaving. Methods Participants were adult pantry clients from a large food pantry in the Southern sector of Dallas, Texas. We conducted a repeated measures between-subjects study with 70 clients randomized to receive 14-days of meal kits (n = 35) or no-prep meals (n = 35). Participants completed questionnaires at baseline and two-week follow-up on demographics, hedonic liking of study meals, perceived dietary quality, and food security. Two-way repeated measures analysis of variance was used to examine group and time effects, and group by time interactions. We also describe feasibility and satisfaction outcomes to inform future implementation. Results Sixty-six participants completed the study (94%). Conclusions: Results suggest nutritious meal kits and no-prep meals may be desirable nutrition intervention strategies for pantry clients and have potential to increase food security and perceived dietary quality in the short-term. Our findings are limited by a small sample and short follow-up. Future studies should continue to test both interventions, and include longer follow-up, objective measures of dietary quality, and relevant clinical outcomes. Background: Inadequate diet and nutritional status are important risk factors for noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). In Brazil, the city of Rio de Janeiro (RJ) has stood out for its high prevalence of obesity. Objective: To evaluate the temporal trend of indicators of food consumption and nutritional status related to NCDs in the adult population of the city of RJ and other Brazilian capitals. Method: Vigitel data between 2006 and 2019 were used. Prais-Winsten regression was used to evaluate the variation in the prevalence of interest indicators. These were defined based on the goals of the National Plan for Food and Nutritional Security (Plano Nacional de Segurança Alimentar e Nutricional – 2016-19) and the Strategic Action Plan to Tackle NCDs in Brazil (Plano de Ações Estratégicas para o Enfrentamento das DCNT no Brasil – 2011-22). Results: Regular and recommended consumption of fruits and vegetables and regular consumption of sweets did not present significant variation, while the regular consumption of soft drinks decreased in RJ and other capitals during the period. The prevalence of excess weight and obesity increased significantly in RJ and in other capitals. Diabetes is a chronic disease that affects several people around the world. Some domesticated crops in South America have been reported to be a promising source of bioactive compounds with possible hypoglycemic effects. In this review we aimed to explore and synthesize the existing evidence in the scientific literature on the hypoglycemic effect of Andean crops and their bioactive components. We included di- fferent types of primary studies from three databases (Scopus, Pubmed and Web of Science) during June 2023, without restrictions, by means of controlled and uncontrolled language, according to the PICO strategy. We found 30 studies conducted between 2005 and 2022 that reported a hypoglycemic effect, through enzymatic inhibition in in vitro studies and significant glucose reduction in preclinical studies and clinical trials. This effect was attributed to different bioactive components that were identified with independent mechanisms related to glucose reduction and enzymatic inhibition. The most commonly used cultures were Smallanthus sonchifolius (9/30), Lupinus mutabilis (5/30) and Solanum tuberosum (4/30). The hypoglycemic effect was assigned to bioactive components such as polyphenols, flavonoids, phenolic acid subclasses, fructans, alkaloids, hydrolysates, anthocyanins and dietary fiber. Despite encouraging results from different types of studies, further research on their mechanisms of action, their efficacy compared to conventional treatments and their long-term safety is required for these to be considered safe and effective treatments. Colorectal cancer (CRC), one of the most common cancers worldwide, continues to increase in incidence and mortality rates. This trend is closely linked to changes in dietary habits, which are major risk factors for colorectal cancer. The increase in the incidence of CRC in countries previously considered low-risk and with low socioeconomic status is most likely due to lifestyle and dietary changes. Understanding the influence of dietary factors on the onset of colorectal cancer is essential for prevention and treatment. This review explores the complex interplay between dietary factors and colorectal cancer, focusing on the key nutrients and dietary habits that influence disease onset and progression. The impact of diet on colorectal microbiota and the influence of diet on early-onset colorectal cancer are also reviewed, reviewing recent research on how dietary interventions affect the treatment and recurrence of colorectal cancer. Finally, the future research directions for developing and applying effective dietary intervention strategies are discussed.

Background: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between nutritional performance and physical activity in patients with COVID-19.Methods: In this causal-comparative ex-post facto study, after obtaining a license from Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, 600 people who volunteered to participate in the present study were selected as the statistical sample. After completing the demographic information and informed consent forms, subjects completed the Nutritional Knowledge Questionnaire and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Onesample t-test, Spearman correlation coefficient, Mann-Whitney U and regression tests were used to analyze the data. The data were analyzed using SPSS software version 22, and a significant level of 0.05 for data analysis was considered.Results: The levels of BMI, nutritional attitude, nutritional knowledge, and nutritional performance of men and women with COVID-19 were unsatisfactory (P≥0.05). Nutritional knowledge scores in women were significantly higher than in men (P≥0.05). With decreasing physical activity, nutritional performance levels increased in women and men; with decreasing nutritional attitudes, physical activity levels increased in men. Also, BMI levels improved with increasing nutritional knowledge scores (P≥0.05).Conclusion: It seems that lack of proper physical activity, attitude, and poor nutritional performance are the factors affecting the increase in the number of COVID-19 patients; therefore, it is recommended that health centers provide the necessary training on the optimal role of physical activity, attitude, and nutritional performance in the prevention of COVID-19 disease.

BACKGROUND: Although school garden programs have been shown to improve dietary behaviors, there has not been a cluster-randomized controlled trial (RCT) conducted to examine the effects of school garden programs on obesity or other health outcomes. The goal of this study was to evaluate the effects of a one-year school-based gardening, nutrition, and cooking intervention (called Texas Sprouts) on dietary intake, obesity outcomes, and blood pressure in elementary school children. METHODS: This study was a school-based cluster RCT with 16 elementary schools that were randomly assigned to either the Texas Sprouts intervention (n = 8 schools) or to control (delayed intervention, n = 8 schools). The intervention was one school year long (9 months) and consisted of: a) Garden Leadership Committee formation; b) a 0.25-acre outdoor teaching garden; c) 18 student gardening, nutrition, and cooking lessons taught by trained educators throughout the school-year; and d) nine monthly parent lessons. The delayed intervention was implemented the following academic year and received the same protocol as the intervention arm. Child outcomes measured were anthropometrics (i.e., BMI parameters, waist circumference, and body fat percentage via bioelectrical impedance), blood pressure, and dietary intake (i.e., vegetable, fruit, and sugar sweetened beverages) via survey. Data were analyzed with complete cases and with imputations at random. Generalized weighted linear mixed models were used to test the intervention effects and to account for clustering effect of sampling by school. RESULTS: A total of 3135 children were enrolled in the study (intervention n = 1412, 45%). Average age was 9.2 years, 64% Hispanic, 47% male, and 69% eligible for free and reduced lunch. The intervention compared to control resulted in increased vegetable intake (+ 0.48 vs. + 0.04 frequency/day, p = 0.02). There were no effects of the intervention compared to control on fruit intake, sugar sweetened beverages, any of the obesity measures or blood pressure. CONCLUSION: While this school-based gardening, nutrition, and cooking program did not reduce obesity markers or blood pressure, it did result in increased vegetable intake. It is possible that a longer and more sustained effect of increased vegetable intake is needed to lead to reductions in obesity markers and blood pressure. CLINICAL TRIALS NUMBER: NCT02668744 .

Introduction: Food intake can determine a person's individual state of health and well-being. Addressing relevant nutrition content in the nursing curriculum is the key to providing knowledge, attitudes and skills on prevention and treatment and to promoting health. Objective: To review the evidence concerning teaching and learning methods on nutrition for undergraduate nursing students. Methods: A search was carried out in MEDLINE (PubMed/Ovid), Web of Science (WOS), EMBASE (through OvidSP), CINAHL (through EBSCO Publishing), ERIC (Educational Resource Information Center) and Scopus. The search included publications in English and Spanish from the launch of the databases until January 2021. Primary empirical studies, studies with nursing students in the sample and studies that reported on teaching and learning about nutrition were included in this review. Results: 22 articles met the inclusion criteria, identifying four relevant themes: 1) Review of nursing programs and curricula; 2) Teaching designs; 3) Assessment of learning; 4) Student perceptions of the teaching methodology. Conclusions: This scoping review highlights the benefits of teaching nursing students about nutritional care programmes. The publications included show great heterogeneity across programmes, explicit learning outcomes and evaluation methods. Our findings suggest the need to further expand and strengthen research on design, implementation and evaluation of learning sequences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Prenatal micronutrient deficiencies are associated with negative maternal and birth outcomes. Multiple micronutrient supplementation (MMS) during pregnancy is a cost-effective intervention to reduce these adverse outcomes. However, important knowledge gaps remain in the implementation of MMS interventions. The Child Health and Nutrition Research Initiative (CHNRI) methodology was applied to inform the direction of research and investments needed to support the implementation of MMS interventions for pregnant women in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). Following CHNRI methodology guidelines, a group of international experts in nutrition and maternal health provided and ranked the research questions that most urgently need to be resolved for prenatal MMS interventions to be successfully implemented. Seventy-three research questions were received, analyzed, and reorganized, resulting in 35 consolidated research questions. These were scored against four criteria, yielding a priority ranking where the top 10 research options focused on strategies to increase antenatal care attendance and MMS adherence, methods needed to identify populations more likely to benefit from MMS interventions and some discovery issues (e.g., potential benefit of extending MMS through lactation). This exercise prioritized 35 discrete research questions that merit serious consideration for the potential of MMS during pregnancy to be optimized in LMIC.

While conventional nutrition research has yielded biomarkers such as doubly labeled water for energy metabolism and 24-h urinary nitrogen for protein intake, a critical need exists for additional, equally robust biomarkers that allow for objective assessment of specific food intake and dietary exposure. Recent advances in high-throughput MS combined with improved metabolomics techniques and bioinformatic tools provide new opportunities for dietary biomarker development. In September 2018, the NIH organized a 2-d workshop to engage nutrition and omics researchers and explore the potential of multiomics approaches in nutritional biomarker research. The current Perspective summarizes key gaps and challenges identified, as well as the recommendations from the workshop that could serve as a guide for scientists interested in dietary biomarkers research. Topics addressed included study designs for biomarker development, analytical and bioinformatic considerations, and integration of dietary biomarkers with other omics techniques. Several clear needs were identified, including larger controlled feeding studies, testing a variety of foods and dietary patterns across diverse populations, improved reporting standards to support study replication, more chemical standards covering a broader range of food constituents and human metabolites, standardized approaches for biomarker validation, comprehensive and accessible food composition databases, a common ontology for dietary biomarker literature, and methodologic work on statistical procedures for intake biomarker discovery. Multidisciplinary research teams with appropriate expertise are critical to moving forward the field of dietary biomarkers and producing robust, reproducible biomarkers that can be used in public health and clinical research.

The gut microbiota is increasingly implicated in the health and metabolism of its human host. The host's diet is a major component influencing the composition and function of the gut microbiota, and mounting evidence suggests that the composition and function of the gut microbiota influence the host's metabolic response to diet. This effect of the gut microbiota on personalized dietary response is a growing focus of precision nutrition research and may inform the effort to tailor dietary advice to the individual. Because the gut microbiota has been shown to be malleable to some extent, it may also allow for therapeutic alterations of the gut microbiota in order to alter response to certain dietary components. This article is the second in a 2-part review of the current research in the field of precision nutrition incorporating the gut microbiota into studies investigating interindividual variability in response to diet. Part I reviews the methods used by researchers to design and carry out such studies as well as analyze the results subsequently obtained. Part II reviews the findings of these studies and discusses the gaps in our current knowledge and directions for future research. The studies reviewed provide the current understanding in this field of research and a foundation from which we may build, utilizing and expanding upon the methods and results they present to inform future studies.

Health care is increasingly focused on health at the individual level. In the rapidly evolving field of precision nutrition, researchers aim to identify how genetics, epigenetics, and the microbiome interact to shape an individual's response to diet. With this understanding, personalized responses can be predicted and dietary advice can be tailored to the individual. With the integration of these complex sources of data, an important aspect of precision nutrition research is the methodology used for studying interindividual variability in response to diet. This article stands as the first in a 2-part review of current research investigating the contribution of the gut microbiota to interindividual variability in response to diet. Part I reviews the methods used by researchers to design and carry out such studies as well as the statistical and bioinformatic methods used to analyze results. Part II reviews the findings of these studies, discusses gaps in our current knowledge, and summarizes directions for future research. Taken together, these reviews summarize the current state of knowledge and provide a foundation for future research on the role of the gut microbiome in precision nutrition.

Objective: To determine the association between nutritional risk, hospital stay and medical diagnosis among patients admitted at Centro Especializado de Rehabilitación Profesional (CERP) of Hospital Nacional Guillermo Almenara Irigoyen. Materials and methods: An observational retrospective longitudinal cohort study was conducted with inpatients between July 1, 2021 and February 27, 2022. The patients were followed up until they left the hospital (discharge). Individuals under 18 years of age, pregnant or puerperal women, and those whose stay was less than 24 hours were excluded. The data of interest was collected from the patients' medical records and diet cards. The main variable was the nutritional risk, which was detected using the Nutritional Risk Screening (NRS) 2002. The secondary variables were age group, sex, hospital stay, main medical diagnosis, discharge condition and nutritional status. Data analysis was performed using the chi-square test to compare the qualitative or categorical variables, and the Student's t-test and ANOVA for the quantitative variables. A value of p < 0.05 was considered as statistically significant. Results: A total of 1,929 patients were included in the study. Nutritional risk prevalence accounted for 33.13 %. Patients with this condition showed the highest mortality rates (57.51 %). It was found that nutritional risk prevalence was related to a longer hospital stay (4.6 more days) (p < 0.001), a diagnosis of constitutional thinness (48.67 %) (p < 0.001) and the medical diagnosis, being oncology disorders the most associated ones (50.93 %). Conclusions: Nutritional risk is associated with disease progression, resulting in an increased hospital stay, mortality rate and therefore hospital costs. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate food labels targeted at children and identify the concomitant presence of claims and high levels of critical nutrients and/or the presence of sweeteners. As a secondary objective, it aimed to list different types of claims and check which marketing strategies are most used. Methods: We collected 409 products, from 8 popular food groups targeted at children, in Brazilian market (i.e., fruit drinks, dairy drinks, sandwich cookies, cakes, breakfast cereals, jellies, corn snacks, and yogurts). The contents of critical nutrients (e.g., sugar, total fat, saturated fat, and transfat, and sodium) and presence/absence of sweetener were calculated, considering Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) parameters. Then, we verified the presence and types of claims in these products. Results: Overall, 265 (64.7%) labels presented claims. In three of the eight categories (i.e., breakfast cereals, dairy drinks, and yogurt), all products with claims (50, 34, and 34 products, respectively) had one or more nutrients in harmful concentrations (critical nutrients above PAHO’s nutritional profile and/or presence of sweeteners). In the other categories, only one product (of 63 sandwich cookies and 26 breakfast cereals with claims) and three products (of 22 cakes and 28 jellies with claims) had no nutrient in critical concentration. The presence of claims, like “rich/source” of micronutrient, was predominant in seven of the eight food groups. Conclusion: In the present study, there was a high presence of claims, of different types, in foods targeted at children, which, for the most part, also have excess of at least one critical nutrient, according to PAHO. Recognition and treatment of malnutrition in pediatric oncology patients is crucial because it is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Nutrition-relevant data collected from cancer clinical trials and nutrition-specific studies are insufficient to drive high-impact nutrition research without augmentation from additional data sources. To date, clinical big data resources are underused for nutrition research in pediatric oncology. Health-care big data can be broadly subclassified into three clinical data categories: administrative, electronic health record (including clinical data research networks and learning health systems), and mobile health. Along with -omics data, each has unique applications and limitations. We summarize the potential use of clinical big data to drive pediatric oncology nutrition research and identify key scientific gaps. A framework for advancement of big data utilization for pediatric oncology nutrition research is presented and focuses on transdisciplinary teams, data interoperability, validated cohort curation, data repurposing, and mobile health applications.

Scaling up integrated nutrition programmes from small, targeted interventions or pilot studies to large-scale government-run programmes can be challenging, with risks of changing the nature and quality of the interventions such that effectiveness is not sustained. In 1999, the Government of Madagascar introduced a nationwide, community-based, growth-monitoring and nutrition education programme, which was gradually scaled up throughout the country until 2011. Data from three nationally representative surveys, administered pre- and post-programme implementation, in participating and non-participating communities, were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the programme to reduce malnutrition in children under 5 after two phases of expansion (1999-2004 and 2004-2011). In our analyses, we compared "original" communities, who had initiated the programme during the first phase, and "new" communities, who initiated the programme during the second phase. "Original" communities demonstrated a significant effect on mean weight-for-age and on the prevalence of underweight by 2004; this effect was sustained at a reduced level through 2011. In contrast, "new" communities showed no benefits for any childhood nutritional outcomes. An explanation for these findings may be that community health workers in the "new" communities reported lower motivation and less use of key messages and materials than those in the "original" communities. Frontline workers reported increased workload and irregular pay across the board during the second phase of programme expansion. Our findings underscore the risk of losing effectiveness if programme quality is not maintained during scale-up. Key factors, such as training and motivation of frontline workers, are important to address when bringing a programme to scale.

Scientific, technological, and economic progress over the last 100 years all but eradicated problems of widespread food shortage and nutrient deficiency in developed nations. But now society is faced with a new set of nutrition problems related to energy imbalance and metabolic disease, which require new kinds of solutions. Recent developments in the area of new analytical tools enable us to systematically study large quantities of detailed and multidimensional metabolic and health data, providing the opportunity to address current nutrition problems through an approach called Precision Nutrition. This approach integrates different kinds of "big data" to expand our understanding of the complexity and diversity of human metabolism in response to diet. With these tools, we can more fully elucidate each individual's unique phenotype, or the current state of health, as determined by the interactions among biology, environment, and behavior. The tools of precision nutrition include genomics, metabolomics, microbiomics, phenotyping, high-throughput analytical chemistry techniques, longitudinal tracking with body sensors, informatics, data science, and sophisticated educational and behavioral interventions. These tools are enabling the development of more personalized and predictive dietary guidance and interventions that have the potential to transform how the public makes food choices and greatly improve population health.

Objective To visually analyze and sort out the relevant literatures in the field of Parkinson's disease (PD) and nutrition diet in recent 30 years. Methods The core collection of Web of Science was jointly searched with PD as the subject field, nutrition science or nutrition status or diet as any field. The search time was from 1992 to 2022. The obtained literature was imported into CiteSpace software for visual analysis. Results From 1992 to 2022, the average number of published studies on PD and nutrition diet was 32. In recent years, the research on PD and nutritional diet had continued to increase. Research institutions and researchers from the United States and Italy were the main force in this field. Oxidative stress, diet, PD, risk and other keywords had the highest frequency and strong correlation. Diet, high-fat diet, Mediterranean diet, intestinal flora and other words appeared frequently in the key words related to nutritional diet. The clustering effect of neurotoxicity, gut brain axis and obesity was obvious. Conclusion The research on PD and nutritional diet has increased year by year. The research on oxidative stress, intestinal flora and dietary structure of PD has a high degree of enthusiasm, and the research content is diversified. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: Protein is a key macronutrient for preserving physical function, but the role of protein intake on functional status may differ in men and women. We sought to examine the associations of daily protein intake and distribution on functional limitations in older American men and women. Design: Cross-sectional. Setting: Population-based survey. Participants: The analytic sample included 3,976 men and 4,081 women aged ≥60-years from the 2007–2016 waves of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Measurements: Participants reported their ability to perform basic activities of daily living, instrumental activities of daily living, leisure and social activities, lower extremity mobility activities, and general physical tasks. Those reporting difficulty or an inability in completing such functional tasks were considered as having a functional limitation. Protein intake was determined with dietary recalls and participants revealed functional limitations. Protein recommendations of ≥0.80, ≥1.00, and ≥1.50 g/kg/day were used. Based on these cut-points, we also investigated distribution of protein across 4 eating occasions at ≥0.20, ≥0.25, and ≥0.38 g/kg/meal, respectively. Results: Older women meeting each recommendation had decreased odds for functional limitations: 0.55 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.40–0.75) for ≥0.80 g/kg/day, 0.75 (CI: 0.58–0.97) for ≥1.00 g/kg/day, and 0.72 (CI: 0.55–0.94) for ≥1.5 g/kg/day. No significant associations were observed in older men. Further, older women with protein consumption ≥0.20 g/kg/meal had decreased odds for functional limitations: 0.24 (CI: 0.10–0.61) for 1 occasion, 0.20 (CI: 0.08–0.49) for 2 occasions, 0.16 (CI: 0.07–0.40) for 3 occasions, and 0.12 (CI: 0.04–0.32) for 4 occasions. A similar trend was observed for intake ≥0.25 g/kg/meal: 0.31 (CI: 0.16–0.62) for 2 occasions, 0.30 (CI: 0.14–0.61) for 3 occasions, and 0.31 (CI: 0.12–0.78) for 4 occasions. Women with 1 and 2 eating occasions at ≥0.38 g/kg/meal of protein had 0.66 (CI: 0.48–0.91) and 0.54 (CI: 0.37–0.79) decreased odds for functional limitations, respectively. Background: The lack of a national table informing the caffeine contents in foods, drinks, dietary supplements, and medications sold in Brazil added to the noncompulsory disclosure of caffeine contents on labels of food products makes it difficult to estimate caffeine consumption in the Brazilian population. Therefore, this study aimed to develop the Brazilian Caffeine Content Table (BraCaffT). Methods: A systematic search for caffeine levels in foods, drinks, recipes, supplements, and medications was performed through a literature review, afterward collecting data from the United States Department of Agriculture Food Data Central, information from manufacturers' and websites, and the Brazilian official medication guide. Subsequently, data systematization was performed in a spreadsheet with standardized values presented in mg of caffeine per 100 g or 100 mL of food or drink and a capsule or pill for medications and some dietary supplements. Results: The BraCaffT presents 57 items, divided into 11 categories: coffees, teas and infusions, cocoa powder, chocolates, cocoa-based beverages, desserts, soft drinks, energy drinks, guaraná powder, dietary supplements, and medications. Conclusions: The BraCaffT emerges as an instrument of great relevance and wide applicability in clinical contexts, in academic research, and as a database for the Brazilian population to better understand the amounts of caffeine in foods, drinks, dietary supplements, and medications consumed daily favoring a safe intake. To report activities, experiences and learning in the clinical nutrition internship at PROENSINO in a tertiary hospital unit in Fortaleza-CE. Experience report, descriptive about the experiences of nutrition interns from PROENSINO in a hospital specializing in cardiology and pulmonology in Fortaleza-CE between 2018 to 2020. The interns developed and participated in various activities, such as health care in Intensive Care Units with a multidisciplinary team. During the internship, in addition to acquiring technical skills in the area of nutrition, the importance of multiprofessionality in patient care and the exercise of interdisciplinarity as health academics was learned. PROENSINO is configured as an important mechanism in the transformation and academic-professional training, allowing the development of autonomy and security in the exercise of the profession, promoting new knowledge and contributing to differentiated and humanized training in the health area. Scientific progress depends on the quality and credibility of research methods. As discourse on rigor, transparency, and reproducibility joins the cacophony of nutrition information and misinformation in mass media, buttressing the real and perceived reliability of nutrition science is more important than ever. This broad topic was the focus of a 2016 plenary session, "Scientific Rigor and Competing Interests in the Nutrition Research Landscape." This article summarizes and expands on this session in an effort to increase understanding and dialogue with regard to factors that limit the real and perceived reliability of nutrition science and steps that can be taken to mitigate those factors. The end goal is to both earn and merit greater trust in nutrition science by both the scientific community and the general public. The authors offer suggestions in each of the domains of education and training, communications, research conduct, and procedures and policies to help achieve this goal. The authors emphasize the need for adequate funding to support these efforts toward greater rigor and transparency, which will be resource demanding and may require either increased research funding or the recognition that a greater proportion of research funding may need to be allocated to these tasks.

Issue addressed: Although government promoted public health, social media and media campaigns have communicated nutrition information, the Australian population remains chronic under‐consumers of fruit and vegetables and overconsumers of ultra‐processed foods. This scoping review aimed to determine how social media influencers (SMI) communicate nutrition information and the factors that influence the popularity of messages. Identified factors could inform how governments may utilise social media to impact positively on food choices. Methods: Nine databases were searched in the past 5 years (2016‐2021). After relevant sources were identified, entire texts of the grey literature and the "Results" sections of the academic literature were coded. Using Microsoft Word, each key feature of the relevant text was highlighted, and the relevant code was recorded. Inductive coding was utilised where codes were created based on the text itself. These codes were then sorted iteratively into relevant themes and subthemes. Results: Eleven studies were included. From these sources, five themes were identified. These were, (i) promoting dietary change, (ii) certain modes/styles of content delivery, (iii) an attractive individual, (iv) language features and (v) appearing connected to the audience. Conclusion: SMI are selective in their content and communication techniques to ensure their nutrition messages are popular with social media users. Introduction: Introduction: subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is a rare and life-threatening cerebrovascular disease. Mitigating the factors that compromise patient recovery during neurocritical care due to SAH is of clinical benefit. Objectives: to evaluate the nutritional risk of patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage using "The Modified Nutrition Risk in the Critically Ill" (mNUTRIC) score, and examine its association with outcomes such as mortality, time of mechanical ventilation, and functional status among survivors. Methods: we designed a cross-sectional study. Patients with SAH admitted to the neurointensive critical care unit (neuroICU) in a tertiary care public hospital were eligible. The inclusion criteria were a minimum stay in the intensive care unit (ICU) of 24 hrs for subarachnoid hemorrhage from a nontraumatic, spontaneously ruptured cerebral aneurysm, and hospital admission within 24 hrs after the onset of symptoms. Results: high nutritional risk as stratified by the mNUTRIC score was associated with discharge type (OR = 0.346; 95 % CI = 0.182-0.650; p = 0.001), acute hypertensive hydrocephalus (OR = 4.371; 95 % CI = 2.283-8.549; p < 0.001), and functional outcome (OR = 0.106; 95 % CI = 0.025-0.0388; p < 0.001). The mNUTRIC score was significantly different among median age (p < 0.001), length of stay in the neuroICU (p = 0.005), SOFA score (p < 0.001), and APACHE II score (p < 0.001) categories. Conclusions: this study demonstrated an association between nutritional risk assessment and outcomes such as length of stay in the neuroICU, type of discharge, functional status, and mortality prediction accuracy. Food systems face the challenge of maintaining adequate nutrition for all populations. Inter-individual responses to the same diet have made precision or personalized nutrition (PN) an emerging and relevant topic. The aim of this study is to analyze the evolution of the PN field, identifying the principal actors and topics, and providing a comprehensive overview. Therefore, a bibliometric analysis of the scientific research available through the Web of Science (WOS) database was performed, revealing 2148 relevant papers up to June 2024. VOSviewer and the WOS platform were employed for the processing and analysis, and included an evaluation of diverse data such as country, author or most frequent keywords, among others. The analysis revealed a period of exponential growth from 2015 to 2023, with the USA, Spain, and England as the top contributors. The field of "Nutrition and Dietetics" is particularly significant, comprising nearly 33% of the total publications. The most highly cited institutions are the universities of Tufts, College Dublin, and Navarra. The relationship between nutrition, genetics, and omics sciences, along with dietary intervention studies, has been a defining factor in the evolution of PN. In conclusion, PN represents a promising field of research with significant potential for further advancement and growth.

Objectives: On the basis of its safety and accuracy, automation is recommended for parenteral nutrition (PN). The aim of this study was to highlight the changes in practices related to the automation of PN and to perform a cost study comparing manual vs automated production costs., Methods: We conducted a micro-costing study using 1 year of manual production data for adult, neonatal and paediatric PN bagsat a hospital. We used the data to estimate the costs of automating the production process for adult, neonatal and paediatric bags., Results: Major modification to the PN production process resulted in: rationalisation of raw materials, computerisation and optimisation of human needs. Switching from a manual to an automated process reduced the cost of neonatal/paediatric custom bags (€130.73 vs €124.58) and semi-custom bags (€172.08 vs €166.86); but increased the cost of adult bags (€93.06 vs €127.92)., Conclusions: The changes resulting from the automation and revision of the production process globally increased annual expenditures by approximately 9.7%. However, automation minimised the risk of misproduction, bag contamination, and led to a more secure production process that reduced risks incurred by the teams. In view of the gain in patient and staff safety (linked to the use of an automated compounding device) the moderate economic impact (<10%) should not deter the automation of PN production circuits., Competing Interests: Competing interests: None declared., (© European Association of Hospital Pharmacists 2024.
