Summary In this study, bioactive compounds, antioxidant activity, phytochemicals, fatty acid compositions, elements and sensory characteristics of the breads prepared using wheat flour and nutmeg powders at different concentrations were investigated. The results obtained regarding the physical and chemical properties of nutmeg breads exhibited some changes based on the nutmeg amounts added in bread production. Also, ‘L*’ results of the breads changed between 70.85 (1.0%) and 76.09 (0.5%). In addition, ‘a*’ and ‘b*’ results of breads with nutmeg powder were assigned to be between 0.47 (0.5%) and 1.93 (2.0%) to 18.44 (2.0%) and 20.42 (0.5%) and 1.93 (0.5%), respectively. Total phenol and flavonoid amounts of breads were established between 24.64 (0.5%) and 47.58 mg GAE per 100 g (2.0%) to 10.71 (control) and 177.38 mg per 100 g (2.0%), respectively. An increase in the redness value was monitored in nutmeg bread added at the rate of 1% and 2%. The amounts of phenolic constituents in the breads fluctuated depending on the added nutmeg concentrations. Gallic acid and 3,4‐dihydroxybenzoic acid values of the breads were stated to be between 2.66 (2.0%) and 6.66 mg per 100 g (1.0%) to 1.48 (2.0%) and 2.71 mg per 100 g (control), respectively. Phosphorus and potassium quantities of the breads were found between 743.60 (control) and 810.50 mg kg−1 (0.5%) to 2077.37 (1.5%) and 2345.42 mg kg−1 (0.5%), respectively. The dominant fatty acids in bread oils were myristic, palmitic, oleic and linoleic acids. It can be seen that the addition of nutmeg in high concentration decreased the consumer's taste. Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans) is spice plant which has an important position as a source of essential oils. An important problem in nutmeg cultivation is white root disease which can reduce nutmeg production. Until now, white root disease is still a problem in nutmeg plantations in South Aceh district. One of the solution that can be explored as an environmentally friendly control measure is to use the botanical fungicide coconut shell liquid smoke. This research aims to determine the potential of coconut shell liquid smoke in controlling white root fungus in vitro. The research was carried out in the Plant Protection Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, Teuku Umar University. The research design used was a non-factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of nine levels of liquid smoke concentration treatment; control 0%, 0.5%, 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, 6%, 8%, 10%. Each treatment involved three replications. Data analysis was carried out using analysis of variance and Tukey's least significant difference (HSD) test.The research stages carried out consisted of producing coconut shell liquid smoke, isolating white root fungus from the roots of infected nutmeg plants and potential assay of liquid smoke in inhibiting the growth of white root fungus. In vitro bioassay result showed that liquid smoke treatment 3% was the best treatment because it was the lowest concentration causing total inhibition of the growth of white root fungus. Isoeugenol (2-methoxy-4-(1-propenyl)phenol) has been recently classified as possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B) by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). This study conducted an analysis of isoeugenol in common herbs and spices, including basil, cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg, using 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometry. Additionally, over 1300 coffee samples were analysed by 1H-NMR for isoeugenol, but it was not detected in any of the analysed samples. Various essential oils, including nutmeg, basil, clove, sweet flag, and ylang-ylang oils, were examined for isoeugenol content. Out of the twelve nutmeg oils tested, four contained isoeugenol, with concentrations ranging from 3.68 ± 0.09 g/kg to 11.2 ± 0.10 g/kg. However, isoeugenol was not detected in the essential oils of calamus, basil, ylang-ylang, and clove using NMR spectrometry. These findings warrant critical evaluation of the previous literature, given reports of high isoeugenol levels in some of these matrices. Nutmeg is a spice with a rich history of culinary and medicinal use. It boasts a diverse array of bioactive compounds with promising health-promoting properties, making it a subject of increasing interest in the food, pharmaceutical, and nutraceutical industries. This review article delves into the sustainable extraction of nutmeg phytochemicals, exploring the opportunities and challenges associated with adopting green extraction techniques. The primary objective of this review is to shed light on the potential of green extraction methods to harness nutmeg’s valuable phytochemicals while mitigating the environmental impact of the extraction process. The article then explores the prospective green extraction strategies, highlighting various techniques and technologies that have been applied successfully to obtain nutmeg phytochemicals in an eco-friendly manner. Through case studies, we present real-world examples that showcase the viability and advantages of green extraction approaches. Nevertheless, the road to sustainable nutmeg extraction is challenging. In conclusion, this review underscores the potential of green extraction techniques to unlock the vast promise of nutmeg phytochemicals. By identifying prospective strategies and addressing associated roadblocks, we offer insights into a more sustainable and environmentally responsible approach to nutmeg extraction, providing valuable guidance for researchers, industry professionals, and policymakers seeking to enhance the nutmeg sector while prioritizing sustainability and environmental conservation.

Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) provides broadbands, overtones, and combinations of organic-bond vibrations and has been used to characterize agricultural and food products. The adulteration of grated nutmeg with cinnamon is extremely profitable and difficult to detect; to prevent retail fraud, it is vital to differentiate between these materials. This study proposes a model for classifying the adulteration of nutmeg with cinnamon and predicting the level of adulteration. NIR spectra were characterized with six machine learning (ML) algorithms, namely, the principal component-multilayer perceptron (PC-MLP), principal component-linear discriminant analysis (PC-LDA), partial least squares regression (PLSR), support vector machine (SVM), random forest (RF), and decision tree (DT) methods. PC-MLP provided 100% accuracy in calibration and prediction in distinguishing nutmeg from cinnamon. In addition, this approach showed excellent performance in predicting the adulteration ratio of nutmeg and cinnamon with a high coefficient of determination of prediction (R2pred) value of 0.9969, low root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) value of 0.5728%, and high ratio of prediction to deviation (RPD) value of 17.9605. The aim of the present study was to estimate the antioxidant activity, total phenolic, caffeic acid and quercetin contents, along with color parameters and pH of green coffee, cinnamon clove and nutmeg powders using their ethanolic extracts of grape origin (EEGO). In addition, volatile compounds' analysis was done using solid phase dynamic extraction coupled to gas chromatography mass spectrometry (SPDE/GC–MS) to the raw powders. Results showed that the highest average antioxidant activity (59.62%), total phenolic content (1160.49 mg GAE/L), and caffeic acid content (1978.20 mg/L) had green coffee EEGO. The respective values for cinnamon clove EEGO were: 55.12%, 1120.24 mg GAE/L, and 634.66 mg/L, whereas those of nutmeg EEGO were: 57.24%,199.39 mg GAE/L, and 30.43 mg/L. Quercetin had the highest content in cinnamon clove (566.77 mg/L), followed by green coffee (141.75 mg/L), and nutmeg 18.24 (mg/L) EEGO, respectively. Color parameters and pH differed significantly (p < 0.05) among the studied EEGO. Volatile compounds (alcohols, aldehydes, esters, ketones, phenolic compounds, etc.) differed significantly (p < 0.05) among the studied powders. The present findings confirm that ethanol of grape origin can be used as an edible and eco-friendly solvent to extract the phytochemicals found in green coffee, cinnamon clove, and nutmeg powders (which also possess a characteristic aroma), providing additional knowledge, on the potential use of these extracts as natural food preservatives. Two new neolignans, myrifralignans F–G (14 and 18), four new diarylnonanoid derivatives, myrifragranones A–D (21–24), and 18 known compounds were isolated and structurally elucidated from nutmeg (Myristica fragrans Houtt.) seeds. The absolute configurations of these secondary metabolites were determined using the electronic circular dichroism technique. The inhibitory potential of these isolated compounds on soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH) was investigated for the first time. Among them, malabaricones B and C (19 and 20) and four new compounds 21–24 displayed inhibitory activities against sEH, with IC50 values ranging from 14.24 to 46.35 µM. Additionally, the binding mechanism, key binding interactions, stability, and dynamic behaviour of the active compounds with the sEH enzyme were analysed using in silico molecular docking and dynamics simulations. The aril and seed of nutmeg, Myristica fragrans Houtt. (Myristicaceae), hold significant value in various industries globally. Our preliminary research found two morphological variations: a globose shape and an oval shape. Due to these different characteristics, the safety of consumers is of primary concern. Thus, authentication and comparative pharmacological and toxicity analyses are necessary. In this study, pharmacognostic and advanced phytochemical analyses, DNA barcoding, cytotoxicity, and the anti-nitric oxide production of commercial Thai nutmeg were examined. Via morphologic examinations and TLC fingerprinting, all the sampled aril and seed were categorized into globose and oval-shaped groups. The results of HPLC, GC-MS, and LC-MS/MS experiments revealed distinct differences between these groups. The DNA barcoding of the trnH-psbA region using the BLAST method and neighbor-joining tree analyses confirmed the globose nutmeg as M. fragrans and the oval-shaped variant as M. argentea. A comparison was then carried out between the potential toxicity and anti-inflammatory capabilities of M. fragrans and M. argentea. Cytotoxicity tests on HaCaT, 3T3-L1, Caco-2, HEK293, and RAW264.7 were performed using both methanolic extracts and volatile oil from the arils and seeds of both species. Myristica argentea Warb. 1891 and M. fatua Houtt. 1774 are two South-East Asian food tree species. They are harvested from the wild or cultivated for local uses as a condiment (nutmeg and mace), medicine, and source of wood. In this study, we reconstructed the complete chloroplast (cp) genomes of these two species from whole genome sequencing data using the Illumina NovaSeq platform. The genome sizes of M. argentea and M. fatua were respectively 155,871 base pairs (bp) and 155,898 bp, including 126 genes and an overall GC content of 39.20% in both species. Our study provides useful resources for future evolutionary research and diversity analysis of Myristica species.

The aim of this study was to assess the effects of dietary nutmeg (Myristica fragrans (MF)) on growth, innate immunity parameters of serum and mucus, antioxidant defence, and expression of immune genes in common carp (Cyprinus carpio). Three hundred fish (3.79 ± 0.02 g) in four groups were distributed in twelve glass aquariums with a capacity of 150-L. The groups were T1 or control (0% MF), T2 (0.5% MF), T3 (1% MF), and T4 (2% MF), and the fish were sampled after 42 days. According to the results, diet supplementation showed significantly higher weight gain (WG) and lower food conversion ratio (FCR). Spices have been known to be highly contaminated commodities with mycotoxins. The Codex Alimentarius reports that nutmeg is particularly contaminated with aflatoxins (AFs) and ochratoxin A (OTA). To eliminate contaminated commodities, visual sorting and bright greenish-yellow fluorescence (BGYF) sorting are used as low-cost technologies in production engineering. In Indonesia, nutmeg is mainly sorted by visual sorting and classified into three grades according to the Indonesian national standards, with importers further defining their own brand as imported products. In this study, we evaluate the efficacy of BGYF sorting as a further selection method to reduce AFs and OTA using the importer's own brand. Further, the level of these mycotoxins and the relationship between fungal flora and mycotoxin contamination were examined. These results showed that BGYF sorting effectively reduces AFs as well as OTA. In addition, BGYF-positive groups were infected by Aspergillus sections Flavi, Nigri, and Circumdati. The Chinese term rou doukou has generally been taken to mean 'nutmeg'. This identification dates from the nineteenth century. However, there is reason to think that rou doukou was originally not nutmeg, but the fruits of a plant of the ginger family, Zingiberaceae. Early descriptions and illustrations of rou doukou are clearly not of nutmeg: in Chinese pharmacopoeias, it is usually listed with herbs, not trees. The earliest reference to nutmeg is probably in the Zhu fan zhi of 1225. However, most Chinese references to rou doukou long after that date still refer to a plant of the ginger family. Internal mildewed nutmeg is difficult to perceive without cutting the nutmeg open and examining it carefully, which poses a significant risk to public health. At present, macroscopic identification and chromatographic analysis are applied to determine whether nutmeg is moldy or not. However, the former relies on a human panel, with the disadvantages of subjectivity and empirical dependence, whilst the latter is generally time-consuming and requires organic solvents. Therefore, it is urgent to develop a rapid and feasible approach for evaluating the quality and predicting mildew in nutmeg. In this study, the quality and odor characteristics of five groups of nutmeg samples with different degrees of mildew were analyzed by using the responses of an electronic nose combined with chemical profiling. The main physicochemical indicators, such as the levels of α-pinene, β-pinene, elemicin, and dehydro-di-isoeugenol, were determined. The results revealed that the contents of α-pinene, β-pinene, and elemicin changed significantly with the extension of storage time. Through the use of an electronic nose and HS–GC–MS technology to assess the overall odor characteristics of nutmeg samples, it was found that the production of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as ammonia/organic amines, carbon monoxide, ethanol, and hydrogen sulfide, as well as changes in the terpene and phenylpropene components of the nutmeg itself, may be the material basis for the changes in odor. The accuracy of the qualitative classification model for the degree of mildew in nutmeg was higher than 90% according to the electronic nose data combined with different machine learning algorithms. Quantitative models were established for predicting the contents of the chemical components, and models based on a BP neural network (BPNN), the support vector machine (SVM), and the random forest algorithm (RF) all showed good performance in predicting the concentrations of these chemical components, except for dehydro-di-isoeugenol. The BPNN performed effectively in predicting the storage time of nutmeg on the basis of the E-nose's responses, with an RMSE and R2 of 0.268 and 0.996 for the training set, and 0.317 and 0.993 for the testing set, respectively. The results demonstrated that the responses of the electronic nose (E-nose) had a high correlation with the internal quality of nutmeg. This work proposes a quick and non-destructive evaluation method for the quality of nutmeg, which has high accuracy in discriminating between different degrees of mold in nutmeg and is conducive to early detection and warning of moldy phenomena. Nutmeg is an important spice and contributes significantly to the gross domestic product of Indonesia. The study examines the impact of climate change on Indonesia and the production of nutmeg over Banda Neira Island. For this, the outputs from high‐resolution regional climate models under different representative concentration pathways (RCP2.6, RCP4.5 and RCP8.5), within the framework of Coupled Model Intercomparison Project 5/Coordinated Regional Climate Down‐scaling Experiment‐Coordinated Output for Regional Evaluations (CMIP5/CORDEX‐CORE) over southeast Asia domain are employed. The representation of the spatial structure of rainfall and temperature climatology is found to be much better in ensembles as compared to individual model experiments. The behaviour of simulated rainfall and temperature from the model experiments is examined to check whether the projected climate favours an increase in nutmeg production. The study found that projected changes in the number of wet days (ideal 100–160 wet days), heavy rainfall events, rising mean temperature above the optimum temperature range (25–26°C), increasing heatwave spells, and prolongation of the warm period led to an unfavourable climate for nutmeg production. Based on the analysis of dynamically produced (model simulated) climate variables, the study rejects the forecasted increase in nutmeg production using a statistical regression model due to the unfavourable climatic conditions that are likely to affect the growth, production and quality of nutmeg. The changing climate not only reduces regional agricultural production but also impacts the socio‐economic condition of the people of Indonesia. Therefore, the study emphasizes implementing stringent climate laws and policies at global, regional and local levels to curb greenhouse gas emissions and reduce the negative impact of climate change. This research aimed to obtain land characters and qualities data and to determine land suitability for clove and nutmeg and their spatial distribution in Nusalaut Island, Central Maluku Regency. The results showed that the land suitability for clove are marginally suitable class (S3) with the coverage area is 1452.38 ha or 66.51%, and the limiting factors are water availability and nutrient retention (wa, nr) limiting factors and unsuitable class (N) of 731.52 ha or 33.50 %. While the land suitability for nutmeg are moderate suitable (S2) with root media and nutrient retention (rc, nr) limiting factors and the coverage area is 123.75 ha or 5.66%, S2nr of 409.93 ha or 18.77%, slope (S2eh) limiting factor with the coverage area is 918.7 ha or 42.1% and the unsuitable class (N) with the area of 731.52 ha or 33.50 %. The land suitability of the clove and nutmeg is located in the Other Used-Areas (APL) with the area of 2183.63 ha, while total land units in the study area is 2697 ha. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Paneer is a traditional dairy product of India and is similar to unripened soft cheese. It is used as a raw material for the preparation of a variety of culinary dishes and snacks. Paneer is marble white in appearance, with a firm, cohesive and spongy body and a sweetish-acidic-nutty flavor. But it is highly perishable with a limited shelf- life like other indigenous dairy products. Its shelf life was reported to be only six days under refrigeration, though its freshness is lost within three days. The spoilage of paneer occurs mainly due to the growth of microorganisms, which bring about various physico-chemical changes. In the present study, attempts were made to increase the shelf-life of paneer at refrigerated storage by the application ofnutmeg pericarp essential oil surface coating. The essential oil was prepared from fresh nutmeg fruit flesh by steam distillation method. The physico-chemical and bio functional properties of essential oil were determined. The specific gravity and refractive index of the essential oil were found to be 0.903 and 1.477 respectively. The acid value and total polyphenolic value of essential oil were 3.36 and 4.04 mg GAE/g respectively. The essential oil was also found to have good antimicrobial and antioxidant activity. The shelf life of samples coated with essential oil packaged in LDPE pouches had more shelf life than the control paneer, as the coated paneer kept well for 9 days while the control paneer spoiled after the 6th day of refrigerated storage. Abstract Sarcopenia, characterized by reduced muscle mass and fiber number leading to muscular atrophy, has been associated with serious socioeconomic challenges among the elderly in developed countries. Therefore, preventing sarcopenia could be a promising strategy for achieving a healthy aging society. Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans) has been used as a spice to increase flavor and prevent putrefaction of food. Nutmeg contains various bioactive components that improve muscle activity. To determine the potential effect of lignan-enriched nutmeg extract (LNX) on sarcopenia, LNX (100 mg/kg body weight)-fed aged mice were subjected to forced exercise. Herein, aged (22-month-old) mice fed LNX for three weeks exhibited a shortened and thickened soleus muscle. The ratio of the soleus muscle mass (%) to body weight was significantly increased in LNX-fed aged mice. The relative increase in muscle mass in LNX-fed aged mice improved exercise activities, including rotarod, swimming, and grip strength test results. Proteome profiles of the soleus muscle of LNX-fed mice were used to analyze protein–protein interaction network. Several myosin heavy chain isoforms were found to interact with actin, ACTA1, which functions as a hub protein. Furthermore, the expression of myogenic proteins, such as MYH1, MYH4, and ACTA1, was dose-dependently increased in vivo. In result, our functional proteomic analysis revealed that feeding LNX restored muscle proteins in aged mice.

Banda nutmeg (Myristica fragrans Houtt) is one of the native species of Maluku that has various benefits other than as a cooking spice. Nutmeg, especially its fruit, offers significant advantages in the medical field as a natural dermatological product, effectively treating skin infections caused by pathogens. One such bacterial infection is pyoderma, characterized by the presence of pus-producing bacteria, leading to the formation of pustules or greenish-yellow crusts upon examination. Among the bacteria responsible for skin infections, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) are notable bacterial species that cause skin infections. The active compounds found in nutmeg act as antibacterial agents by interfering with the peptidoglycan components within bacterial cells. This interference results in the formation of intact cell walls, ultimately leading to bacterial cell death. This study aimed to identify the bioactive profile of Maluku nutmeg extract metabolites and assess their inhibitory effects on pathogenic bacteria, specifically P. aeruginosa and MRSA, responsible for skin infections. The study revealed the presence of various bioactive compounds in nutmeg extract, including alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenoids, phenols, and tannins. Notably, the application of nutmeg pulp at an 80% concentration proved highly effective in inhibiting bacterial growth, surpassing the efficacy of the positive control. The enhanced effectiveness against MRSA, compared to P. aeruginosa, can be attributed to the higher concentration of secondary metabolites present in nutmeg extracts.

Many Neotropical tree species are widespread at continental and even inter-continental scales, but phenotypic variation across their respective ranges has rarely been quantified. We measured traits in the widespread, unisexual Neotropical tree Virola sebifera (Myristicaceae) across its continental-scale range, and predicted that, given its hyperdominant status, generalist-pollinated flower type, high dispersal capacity and wide ecological amplitude there would be: (1) a weak relationship among and within reproductive and vegetative characters with environmental, spatial and biome correlates; (2) undetectable canalization of reproductive traits; and (3) high phenotypic variation of vegetative characters. We measured five foliar and seven floral traits from 187 male-expressing individuals of V. sebifera in specimens collected from Central to South America. Spatial regression models were employed to test for the importance of distance, elevation, mean annual rainfall and temperature on phenotypic variation. Pairwise correlations of vegetative and reproductive characters were calculated to examine intraspecific trait variation among and within these two classes. We found that most phenotypic variation was weakly explained by spatial predictors such as certain major South American domains like the Andes Cordillera and the Amazon Basin. Within-class comparisons of floral characters were no different than among-class (floral-foliar) correlates, suggesting the absence of canalization of reproductive structures. Greater phenotypic variation in flowers relative to leaves may be due to the generalist pollinator regime and high dispersal capacity thus relaxing divergences in the evolutionary process of its floral morphology. The results of these morphometric analyses (e.g. weak signals of isolation by distance) in combination with the biology of this Neotropical tree suggest that V. sebifera operates as a well-dispersed metapopulation across most of its range. The essential oil of Myristica fragrans Hutt. (nutmeg) is an important commodity used as a flavoring agent in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic fields. Hydrodistillation is chiefly employed at the industrial scale for nutmeg essential oil isolation, but such a technique generates large quantities of post-distillation by-products (e.g., spent plant material and residual distillation water). Therefore, our work aimed to propose a novel strategy for the valorization of nutmeg wastes, with beneficial economic and ecological advantages. Thus, the current study assessed the phytochemical (GC-MS, LC-HRMS/MS) and biological (antioxidant, enzyme inhibitory, antimicrobial) profile of nutmeg crude materials (essential oil and total extract) and post-distillation by-products (residual water and spent material extract). Identified in these were 43 volatile compounds, with sabinene (21.71%), α-pinene (15.81%), myristicin (13.39%), and β-pinene (12.70%) as the main constituents. LC-HRMS/MS analysis of the nutmeg extracts noted fifteen metabolites (e.g., organic acids, flavonoids, phenolic acids, lignans, and diarylnonanoids). Among the investigated nutmeg samples, the spent material extract was highlighted as an important source of bioactive compounds, with a total phenolic and flavonoid content of 63.31 ± 0.72 mg GAE/g and 8.31 ± 0.06 mg RE/g, respectively. Moreover, it showed prominent radical-scavenging and metal-reducing properties and significantly inhibited butyrylcholinesterase (4.78 ± 0.03 mg GALAE/g). Further, the spent material extract displayed strong antimicrobial effects against Streptococcus pneumoniae, Micrococcus luteus, and Bacillus cereus (minimum inhibitory concentrations of 62.5 mg/L). Overall, our study brings evidence on the health-promoting (antioxidant, anti-enzymatic, antimicrobial) potential of nutmeg post-distillation by-products with future reference to their valorization in the pharmaceutical, cosmeceutical, and food industries. Indonesia is a nutmeg exporter with the highest export value during 2012‒2020. However, the growth of Indonesia's export value is lower than its competitors. Therefore, to maintain its position as a major exporter, it is important to know its competitiveness. This study aims to explain the competitiveness of Indonesian nutmeg in the world and in ten export destinations. In addition, this study was conducted to analyze the competitive position in the export destination market. The study uses secondary data from UN Comtrade. The data are Indonesian export values of whole and powdered nutmeg in the international market and in ten destination countries during 2012‒2020. The data were processed using revealed comparative advantage (RCA) and dynamic revealed comparative advantage (DRCA) analysis. The results showed that Indonesian whole and powdered nutmeg were competitive in the world market. However, the competitiveness is lower than nutmeg competitiveness of Sri Lanka. Indonesian nutmegs in ten destination markets are also competitive, with the highest competitiveness being in Italy and Germany. Nevertheless, the always positive growth of competitiveness from two products occurred in Japan, thus make Japan's competitive position in rising star during the period of 2018‒2020. Increasing the competitiveness of nutmeg can be done by increasing the export value of the product through regulations by the government regarding post-harvest handling so that there is only a small amount of aflatoxin. The current study presents the most suitable method for encapsulating nutmeg essential oil with liquorice and red clover. Two widely used methods, spray-drying and freeze-drying, were employed to find the most suitable for essential oil volatile compounds' protection. Results showed that freeze-dried capsules (LM) had a higher yield (85.34%) compared to the exact formulation of spray-dried microcapsules (SDM)—45.12%. All the antioxidant and total phenolic compounds' results obtained with the LM sample were significantly higher compared with SDM. LM microcapsules were incorporated in two different bases with no additional sugar (gelatin and pectin) for targeted release. Pectin tablets had firmer and harder texture properties, while gelatin tablets had a more elastic texture. There was a significant impact on texture changes caused by microcapsules. Microencapsulated essential oil with extracts can be used alone or in a gel base (pectin or gelatin, depending on user preferences). Sarcopenia, characterized by reduced muscle mass and fiber number leading to muscular atrophy, has been associated with serious socioeconomic challenges among the elderly in developed countries. Therefore, preventing sarcopenia could be a promising strategy for achieving a healthy aging society. Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans) has been used as a spice to increase flavor and prevent putrefaction of food. Nutmeg contains various bioactive components that improve muscle activity. To determine the potential effect of lignan-enriched nutmeg extract (LNX) on sarcopenia, LNX (100 mg/kg body weight)-fed aged mice were subjected to forced exercise. Herein, aged (22-month-old) mice fed LNX for three weeks exhibited a shortened and thickened soleus muscle. The ratio of the soleus muscle mass (%) to body weight was significantly increased in LNX-fed aged mice. The relative increase in muscle mass in LNX-fed aged mice improved exercise activities, including rotarod, swimming, and grip strength test results. Proteome profiles of the soleus muscle of LNX-fed mice were used to analyze protein–protein interaction network. Several myosin heavy chain isoforms were found to interact with actin, ACTA1, which functions as a hub protein. Furthermore, the expression of myogenic proteins, such as MYH1, MYH4, and ACTA1, was dose-dependently increased in vivo. Abstract Myristicin is an allylbenzene and a major key constituent of many plant species, such as Myristica fragrans Houtt. (nutmeg), Foeniculum vulgare Mill. (fennel), and Petroselinum crispum (Mill.) Fuss (parsley). Their plant parts have been used in traditional medicine and as a flavoring seasoning for cooking but, and as biopesticides with natural compounds. Myristicin has been related with several biological effects, such as anticarcinogenic, anti‐inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, antidiabetic, analgesic, and hepatoprotective. The traditional uses include the treatment of complications related to gastrointestinal tract, respiratory system, and gynecological disorders. However, several studies have been reported contraindications associated to high dose consumption of myristicin. This review summarizes the biological activities of myristicin and myristicin‐rich plants, toxicological effects along with its bioavailability, and metabolism. In addition, their traditional uses and their role as ecological remedy in plants protection has been reviewed. Nutmeg is the myristicin‐rich plant with more pharmacological effects reported but also with most contraindication and toxically reports.

This study examines the activities of alanine aminotransaminase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) in the liver of 30 adult Wistar rats exposed to nutmeg for 30 days. 1 g of nutmeg was administered to group A (n=10), 2 g of nutmeg to group B (n=10) and group C (n=10) was used as the control. Enzyme activities were assayed in both serum and liver (tissue homogenate) spectrophotometrically. Results obtained showed a significant increase (p < 0.05) in level of AST in serum of rats in group A and B (20.2±7.29 and 23.2 ± 3.27 U/L) when compared to the control group (14.8± 1.78 U/L) while serum ALT level was significantly reduced (5.2± 1.78 and 4.2 ± 0.04 U/L) compared to the control group (7.0 ± 2.6 U/L) but the differences based on dosage was statistically insignificant (p≥ 0.05). The enzyme activities in liver tissue homogenate showed a significant increase (p˂ 0.05) in AST levels (13.8 ± 1.14, 14.6 ± 1.78 and 12.8 ± 0.08 U/L) among test groups and between controls but ALT levels though lower in treated groups than control, was statistically insignificant (p≥ 0.05) among test and between control group (4.6 ± 1.34, 4.0 ± 0.08 and 5.8 ± 0.03 U/L). Differences in enzyme activities due to nutmeg administration may lead to hepatocellular injury as well as myocardial infarction. The results suggests that dosage and long-term consumption of nutmeg could have severe health implication as it affects liver function as well as other associated organ of the body.

The study was aimed at assessing the nutritional and medicinal properties of nutmeg, a seed of Myristica fragrans Houtt. Locally sourced nutmeg in Ado-Ekiti, Nigeria, were analysed for their proximate, minerals, vitamins, phytochemicals and bioactive molecules contents. GC–MS analysis of the essential oil was carried out and drug properties of the identified bioactive molecules were screened computationally, using online Osiris server. The methanolic and ethanolic extracts of nutmeg were screened for their antibacterial activities. Results: The nutmeg samples were found to have high contents of fat (26.7%), protein (18.7%), carbohydrate (28.9%), energy (3938.3 Kcal/Kg) and fibre (9.4%); rich in Ca²⁺, K+, Po₄3⁻, Mg²⁺, Fe²⁺ and ascorbic acid; with low levels of Zn2+, thiamine, niacin and riboflavin. The phytochemical analysis indicated high levels of alkaloids, phytates, tannins, oxalates, flavonoids, terpernoids, antioxidant, with low protease inhibitor, and no detectable cyanogenic glycosides. The GC–MS analysis of the essential oil gave a chromatogram with 33 peaks, and the identified molecules including gamma-Terpinene, Isoborneol, Safrole, Geraniol, (+)-4-Carene, Myristicin and Guaiol among others, and some of these molecules are having excellent drug properties. The multi-drug resistant clinical bacterial isolates and the reference bacteria used in this study were all susceptible to both methanolic and ethanolic extracts of nutmeg, with the methanolic extract showing more significant antibacterial profiles. The present study demonstrated nutmeg as having high nutritional and antibacterial values, with rich content of bioactive molecules that could serve as sources of new therapeutics against drug resistant bacterial infections.

Paneer is a traditional dairy product of India and is similar to unripened soft cheese. It is used as a raw material for the preparation of a variety of culinary dishes and snacks. Paneer is marble white in appearance, with a firm, cohesive and spongy body and a sweetish-acidic-nutty flavor. But it is highly perishable with a limited shelf-life like other indigenous dairy products. Its shelf life was reported to be only six days under refrigeration, though its freshness is lost within three days. The spoilage of paneer occurs mainly due to the growth of microorganisms, which bring about various physico-chemical changes. In the present study, attempts were made to increase the shelf-life of paneer at refrigerated storage by the application of nutmeg pericarp essential oil surface coating. The essential oil was prepared from fresh nutmeg fruit flesh by steam distillation method. The physico-chemical and bio functional properties of essential oil were determined. The specific gravity and refractive index of the essential oil were found to be 0.903 and 1.477 respectively. The acid value and total polyphenolic value of essential oil were 3.36 and 4.04 mg GAE/g respectively. The essential oil was also found to have good antimicrobial and antioxidant activity. The shelf life of samples coated with essential oil packaged in LDPE pouches had more shelf life than the control paneer, as the coated paneer kept well for 9 days while the control paneer spoiled after the 6th day of refrigerated storage. Amitav Ghosh's The Nutmeg's Curse (2021) offers an incisive template of the intersecting history of Anthropocene and colonisation. The parables retold by Ghosh transport us to a sequestered past obscured by a Eurocentric discourse on colonial modernity. However, it is the same history which is now falling apart to reveal the devastating trajectory of the omnicidal enterprise carried out by the earliest colonising forces. The mapping of anthropogenic activities also helps us identify the locus of the philosophy that has bolstered the impetus of these forces. On one hand, the mechanistic view of life propagated by the colonisers had initiated the inception of colonial modernity; on the other hand, its boomeranging effect coupled with the "great acceleration" (133) has reached a tipping point leading to the present-day environmental crisis. Ghosh's book is a percipient warning for denialists who believe that the earth is an inert entity and that non-humans are brute forces to be subjugated. To counter this climate crisis, Ghosh comes up with some reversal strategies in which storytellers and indigenous communities may play an active role in restoring "Gaia" with all its vitality. Determination of the myristicin and alpha-pinene content of nutmeg is still constrained by the extended testing time in the laboratory, which is expensive and is carried out destructively. In addition, non-destructive testing using spectroscopy often faces problems in building models that only rely on algorithms that perform linearly, such as PCR and PLSR. Therefore, the present study studied Vis-NIR (381-1065 nm) as a fast, inexpensive, and non-destructive mechanism to determine the myristicin and alphapinene of nutmeg fruits from Aceh, Indonesia. Two algorithms commonly used in spectral data processing, partial least squares regression (PLSR) and machine learning represented by a support vector machine (SVM), were employed and compared to predict myristicin and alpha-pinene in nutmeg fruits. The chemical reference parameters (myristicin and alpha-pinene) were measured using gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Standard normal variate (SNV) and multiplicative scatter correction (MSC) preprocessing were involved as spectra enhancement before the prediction models outcome. The results show that the kernel of the radial basis function (RBF) kernel ε-SVM algorithm is better than PLSR for myristicin prediction with gamma (ε), c, and nu (ε) of 0.1, 1.0, and 0.99, respectively. Also, the ε-SVM algorithm by RBF kernel is better than PLSR for the prediction of alpha-pinene in nutmeg fruits with gamma (ε), c, and epsilon (ε) compositions of 0.01, 10, 0.1, respectively. The coefficient correlation of calibration (rc) and coefficient determination of prediction (Rp²), the root means square error of calibration (RMSEC) and prediction (RMSEP), and the ratio (RPD) for the prediction of myristicin were 0.992, 0.986, 0.941%, 1.325% and 8.348, respectively. The coefficient correlation of calibration (rc) and coefficient determination of prediction (Rp²), the root mean square error of calibration (RMSEC) and prediction (RMSEP), and the ratio of prediction to deviation ratio (RPD) for the prediction of alpha-pinene were 0.976, 0.979, 0.305%, 0.317% and 6.826, respectively. In general, the results satisfactorily indicate that Vis-NIRS, with the appropriate algorithm, has promising results in determining myristicin and alpha-pinene on nutmeg from Aceh, Indonesia, as nondestructive measurement. The experiment was to optimize the extraction conditions of polyphenol from nutmeg by ultrasonic wave and cellulase. Using nutmeg as raw material, the extraction process of polyphenols from nutmeg was optimized by ultrasonic and cellulase, and the antioxidant activity of nutmeg was studied in vitro. The results showed that the optimal extraction process was as follows: Cellulase dosage of 1.6 g/L, enzymolysis temperature of 45 ℃, ultrasonic time of 60 min and ultrasonic power of 300 W. Under these conditions, the yield of mace polyphenol was 2.962%. When the polyphenol concentration was 1.5 g/L, the DPPH· and ABTS+· clearance rates were 80.34% and 83.13%, respectively. The study indicates that the method used in the experiment has low energy consumption and high efficiency, which can provide a reference for the efficient extraction of polyphenols from nutmeg. Internal mildewed nutmeg is difficult to perceive without cutting the nutmeg open and examining it carefully, which poses a significant risk to public health. At present, macroscopic identification and chromatographic analysis are applied to determine whether nutmeg is moldy or not. However, the former relies on a human panel, with the disadvantages of subjectivity and empirical dependence, whilst the latter is generally time-consuming and requires organic solvents. Therefore, it is urgent to develop a rapid and feasible approach for evaluating the quality and predicting mildew in nutmeg. In this study, the quality and odor characteristics of five groups of nutmeg samples with different degrees of mildew were analyzed by using the responses of an electronic nose combined with chemical profiling. The main physicochemical indicators, such as the levels of α-pinene, β-pinene, elemicin, and dehydro-di-isoeugenol, were determined. The results revealed that the contents of α-pinene, β-pinene, and elemicin changed significantly with the extension of storage time. Through the use of an electronic nose and HS–GC–MS technology to assess the overall odor characteristics of nutmeg samples, it was found that the production of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as ammonia/organic amines, carbon monoxide, ethanol, and hydrogen sulfide, as well as changes in the terpene and phenylpropene components of the nutmeg itself, may be the material basis for the changes in odor. The accuracy of the qualitative classification model for the degree of mildew in nutmeg was higher than 90% according to the electronic nose data combined with different machine learning algorithms. Quantitative models were established for predicting the contents of the chemical components, and models based on a BP neural network (BPNN), the support vector machine (SVM), and the random forest algorithm (RF) all showed good performance in predicting the concentrations of these chemical components, except for dehydro-di-isoeugenol. The BPNN performed effectively in predicting the storage time of nutmeg on the basis of the E-nose’s responses, with an RMSE and R2 of 0.268 and 0.996 for the training set, and 0.317 and 0.993 for the testing set, respectively. The results demonstrated that the responses of the electronic nose (E-nose) had a high correlation with the internal quality of nutmeg. This work proposes a quick and non-destructive evaluation method for the quality of nutmeg, which has high accuracy in discriminating between different degrees of mold in nutmeg and is conducive to early detection and warning of moldy phenomena.

IntroductionA medicinal plant, Myristica fragrans seed meal (nutmeg), was utilized to evaluate its impact on the growth, immunity, and antioxidant defense of zebrafish (Danio rerio).MethodsIn this regard, zebrafish (0.47 ± 0.04 g) (mean ± S.D.) were fed with 0% (control), 1% (T1-nutmeg), 2% (T2-nutmeg), and 3% (T3-nutmeg) of powdered nutmeg for 70 days. At the end of the feeding trial, growth performance, survival rate of fish, and temperature-challenge effects were recorded. Immune and antioxidant parameters were also assessed through the collection of serum and skin mucus samples.ResultsThe results indicated that nutmeg supplementation did not significantly influence the growth of zebrafish (P > 0.05); however, the survival rate of fish fed with 2 and 3% of nutmeg supplementation significantly decreased (P < 0.05). The skin mucus and serum total protein, total immunoglobulin (Ig), and lysozyme activity were significantly increased in T3-nutmeg treatment in comparison to the control (P < 0.05). Superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities were also enhanced in the T3-nutmeg group (P < 0.05). Nutmeg supplementation significantly upregulated the mRNA expression of growth hormone (gh) and insulin growth factor-1 (igf-1). Moreover, the nutmeg inclusion upregulated the expression of interleukin-1β (IL-1β), lysozyme, sod, and cat. The dietary supplementation of nutmeg significantly increased the resistance of zebrafish against cold-water shock and survivability afterward (P < 0.05).DiscussionIn conclusion, the supplementation of 3% powdered nutmeg in zebrafish diets could be suggested as an effective immune stimulator that improves antioxidant defense and stress tolerance.

The use of pesticides in nutmeg still leaves an accumulation of pesticide residues that can endanger human health and damage the ecological balance. In addition, nutmeg with high pesticide residue content will be rejected by nutmeg export destination countries. This research was conducted to validate the method of testing pesticide residues of carbaryl, carbofuran, acetate, and dimethoate on nutmeg. This pesticide residue test uses the QuEChERS (Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged, and Safe) optimization method and is analyzed using UPLC-MS/MS (Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry). This method meets the validation requirements according to SANTE/12682/2019. The limit of quantification (LOQ) of the analyte is below the Maximum Residue Limit (MRL) set by the European Union through Regulation (EC) No. 396/2005.

Nutmeg is a spice plant native of the Maluku islands that have been traded and cultivated for generations in the form of smallholder plantations in most of the Maluku islands. However, currently, Maluku's nutmeg exports have decreased. Therefore, the Maluku government must be perspicaciously smart to read every opportunity so that the potential of natural resources can be utilized optimally for the welfare of the region. This research is normative juridical research, with the type of library research. Maluku Province is a province characterized by islands. This phenomenon is the background for the birth of the concept of island cluster development. Through the concept of island cluster development, the Maluku provincial government hopes that each island group realizes the potential of their respective regions and strives to develop this potential for the independence of each island group, especially in increasing Maluku nutmeg exports.

Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans) or fragrant nutmeg is an important commodity that has been used in the food and pharmaceutical industries, hence its quality should be monitored. The objectives of this study were to: 1) identify Critical Control Points (CCP) in nutmeg’s postharvest handling process and prepare nutmeg HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) System and 2) provide a recommendation on GHP (Good Handling Practices) of nutmeg in order to maintain its quality in relation to food safety issue which is very important for international trade. Ripe fruits of nutmeg were collected after the fruits had reached maturity and fallen from their trees. A paranet was placed under each nutmeg tree to prevent the ripe nutmeg fruits from falling on the ground. The subsequent processes were taking out the nutmeg seeds from the fruits and separating the nutmeg seeds from the pulps and maces. After that, the nutmeg seeds underwent the drying process by using the smoke- and oven-dried methods until the moisture content of the nutmeg seeds was reduced by 10%. Subsequently, the nutmeg seeds were divided into two parts, prior to the storing process. The first part was fumigated by using phosphine (2 g/m3) for eight days and the second part was not fumigated. The sampling of nutmeg seeds was conducted at the beginning of storage and after four months of storage. The parameters observed were moisture content, percentage of damaged kernels, the population of each fungal species, and aflatoxin content. The results showed that moisture content, fungal population, aflatoxin B1, and total aflatoxin contents of nutmeg kernels having been dried by using the smoke- and oven-dried methods with and without fumigation still complied with the requirements related to food safety, although the nutmegs were stored for four months. The results of this research could also determine the Critical Control Point (CCP) in the postharvest handling process of nutmegs, i.e., 1) choosing only ripe nutmeg fruits to be harvested; 2) harvesting method by preventing the ripe nutmeg fruits from falling on the ground; 3) drying process of nutmeg seeds should be conducted immediately after separating the nutmegs from the maces by using the smoke- or oven-dried methods; and 4) nutmeg seeds were stored with the shells.
