Nurseries and greenhouses face challenges of limited water supply and increased demand for irrigation efficiency to minimize runoff and mitigate water loss to the environment. Overhead irrigation systems are among the most widely used methods for container plants, particularly in small container sizes. However, there is a lack of research examining the distribution uniformity (DU) of the most used sprinklers in nursery settings. Our study investigated the DU of different overhead sprinkler types and models commonly used in outdoor nurseries in the United States to guide greater adoption of higher irrigation efficiency technology. Catch-can experiments compared ten different sprinkler models in small (4.6 m × 4.6 m) and large (9.1 m × 9.1 m) square experimental plots in Irvine, California. We measured water volume, wind speed, and operating pressure, and calculated the application rate for 189 test runs conducted between Mar 2020 and May 2023. Our results show that of the models tested, the greatest DU was achieved by the Hunter MP2000 at 276 kPa (DU = 0.78 ± 0.05) in the small spacing, and the Senninger Xcel Wobbler with a 3.97 mm nozzle at 172 kPa (DU = 0.76 ± 0.06) in the large spacing. Wind speed and operating conditions affected the DU and spatial uniformity of irrigation among the ten models, highlighting the importance of maintaining operating pressures at the manufacturer's recommendations to ensure optimal application rates and DU. Together these results offer a quantitative comparison of sprinkler performance at different operating pressure and in a wide range of wind speeds, allowing users to select sprinkler models that best fit their operation and maximize water conservation.

Carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) stable isotopes (SI) serve as natural markers for evaluating fish food sources. However, interpreting SI isotope values in newly hatched fish becomes intricate due to the transfer of maternal resources during early development (egg, larvae). This research investigates maternal influences on neotropical freshwater fish larvae growth through SI analysis, focusing on the pacú fish (Piaractus mesopotamicus). The study utilizes a commercial inert feed to assess carbon and nitrogen contributions to larval tissue growth while evaluating the turnover rate, providing valuable insights into early-life nutritional dynamics. Both SI exhibit variations during larval development, following a chronological pattern corresponding to ontogeny, with a significant shift at 13 days after hatching (DAH). Maternal transmission significantly influences isotopic signatures in early larval stages, showing linear correlations between isotopic ratios and standard length (SL) until 15 DAH. C:N ratios decrease from 6.3 ± 0.1 at 0 DAH to 4.2 ± 0.1 at 13 DAH. The isotopic composition of maternal origin aligns with egg stage values, emphasizing the stability of maternal transmission. Under experimental conditions, elemental carbon half-life in tissue (t50) is 6.44 days, and nitrogen t50 is 3.82 days. Maternal isotopic ratios in initial larval development stages offer a potential method for estimating nutritional tracers in field-collected eggs, contributing to understanding the role of freshwater nurseries in comprehending migratory routes, critical hatchery areas, and stock assessment of neotropical migratory fishes. ObjectivesLate preterm and term infants comprise 97.3% of annual births in the United States. Admission criteria and the availability of medical interventions in well newborn nurseries are key determinants of these infants remaining within a mother-infant dyad or requiring a NICU admission and resultant separation of the dyad. The objective of this study was to identify national patterns for well newborn nursery care practices.MethodsWe surveyed a physician representative from each nursery in the Better Outcomes through Research for Newborns Network. We described the admission criteria and clinical management of common newborn morbidities and analyzed associations with nursery demographics.ResultsOf 96 eligible nursery representatives, 69 (72%) completed surveys. Among respondents, 59 (86%) used a minimal birth weight criterion for admission to their well newborn nursery. The most commonly used criteria were 2000 g (n = 29, 49%) and 1800 g (n = 19, 32%), with a range between 1750 and 2500 g. All nurseries used a minimal gestational age criterion for admission; the most commonly used criterion was 35 weeks (n = 55, 80%). Eleven percent of sites required transfer to the NICU for phototherapy. Common interventions in the mother's room included dextrose gel (n = 56, 81%), intravenous antibiotics (n = 35, 51%), opiates for neonatal abstinence syndrome (n = 15, 22%), and an incubator for thermoregulation (n = 14, 20%).ConclusionsWide variation in admission criteria and medical interventions exists in well newborn nurseries. Further studies may help identify evidence-based optimal admission criteria to maximize care within the mother-infant dyad.

Coastal and estuarine habitats are essential for both growth and survival at juvenile stages for a large proportion of marine fish but are exposed to a variety of threats. However, the quantitative impacts of anthropic‐mediated nursery degradation on exploited population dynamics and productivity are rarely addressed. We developed a comprehensive steepness‐based parameterization of the stock–recruitment relationship that directly depends upon juvenile habitat quality and surface area and used a generic age‐ and stage‐structured model to simulate exploited population dynamics under nursery degradation/restoration scenarios. Population responses to juvenile habitat modification were estimated for three species with contrasting life histories. Modifying the surface area of nursery habitat has a predictable direct scaling effect on population size and affects biomass and fishing yield, with identical responses observed for various life histories. Modification of habitat quality affects both the population size and the shape of the productivity curve, leading to more complex responses of biomass and fishing yields that depend upon combinations of life history traits. Populations with low steepness and hence lower resiliency to fishing are the most sensitive to the degradation of habitat quality. Our study emphasizes the critical impact of juvenile habitat modification on population dynamics and productivity and the need to integrate habitat consideration into the management of exploited marine species. Our modelling framework is generalizable and can be extended to handle many diverse life histories and case studies to quantify the consequences of coastal habitat degradation/restoration for the dynamics of exploited marine fish populations. Disposal of biosolids, the solid fraction of sewage treatment, is a global environmental issue. Biosolids contain valuable organic matter and plant nutrients; however, they also contain contaminants including trace elements, xenobiotics, and pathogens. The quality of the biosolids greatly depends on the source of wastewater (i.e., industrial vs. domestic) and the treatment processes. We aimed to determine the potential of three distinct biosolids and one pond sludge to grow indigenous plants for ecosystem restoration. For each amendment, we tested six indigenous species, Veronica salicifolia, Corokia cheesemanii, Griselinia littoralis, Phormium tenax, Poa cita, and Cordyline australis in bark mixed with biosolids and/or pond sludge at rates of 0–50%. There was a significant positive correlation between plant growth and biosolid addition up to a species-dependent plateau. Growth decreased at the highest rates. At a rate of 10% for fresh biosolids and 30% for aged biosolids provided consistent optimal growth across all species. The pond sludge was unsuitable for the establishment of indigenous seedlings. At the optimal rates, there were significant increases in foliar N, P, K, S, and Zn. None of the trace elements accumulated in the plants at phytotoxic concentrations or levels that presented a risk to ecosystems. Elasmobranchs are facing global decline, and so there is a pressing need for research into their populations to inform effective conservation and management strategies. Little information exists on the population ecology of skate species around the British Isles, presenting an important knowledge gap that this study aimed to reduce. The population ecology of thornback ray (Raja clavata) around the Shetland Islands, Scotland, was investigated in two habitats: inshore (50–150 m deep) and shallow coastal (20–50 m deep), from 2011 to 2022, and 2017 to 2022, respectively. Using trawl survey data from the annual Shetland Inshore Fish Survey, the size composition of R. clavata catches was compared between shallow and inshore habitats across 157 trawl sets, and 885 individuals, over the years 2017–2022. Catch per unit effort (CPUE) of R. clavata was significantly higher in shallow than that in inshore areas (ANOVA, F = 72.52, df = 1, 5, p < 0.001). Size composition also significantly differed between the two habitats (analysis of similarities, R = 0.96, p = 0.002), with R. clavata being smaller in shallow areas and juveniles (<60 cm) occurring more frequently. Spatial distribution maps confirmed density hotspots of juveniles in shallow habitats, with repeated use of certain locations consistent over time. The results of this study provide the first evidence for R. clavata using shallow areas for potential nurseries in Shetland, which can inform the IUCN's Important Shark and Ray Area process. Furthermore, this study provides important new population ecology information for R. clavata around Shetland, which may have important conservation implications and be valuable for informing species and fisheries stock assessments in this region. In the Caribbean, young boys are not receiving a wholesome education that is beneficial for their psychological, social and emotional development. Their freedom to choose, to speak and play are restricted. These statements are based on my observations during 2018- 2020 in selected preschools and kindergartens in Trinidad & Tobago. Background: The current challenge is to produce food in systems that are resilient to climate change and take care of the environment. Aim. Evaluate organic and mineral biofertilization in the growth and development of Tithonia diversifolia positions during the nursery phase. Materials and methods: Two trials were carried out: E-I at the “Renato Guitar” CPA and E-II: at the Indio Hatuey Pasture and Forage Experimental Station (EEPFIH). For their development, a completely randomized experimental design was used with 15 and 10 replications, experiment I and II respectively. E-I, three treatments were carried out: T-1: 100% unfertilized soil, T-2: 50% soil + 50% biochar, T-3: 50% soil + 25% biochar + 25% cane bagasse ash. The biochar was obtained from marabou (D. cinerea) and was always embedded in efficient IHPLUS®BF microorganisms. Physiological parameters of primary and secondary metabolism were measured at 30 days, and morphological growth indicators at 30 and 60 days. In E-II, 5 treatments were used: T-1: Unfertilized soil, T-2: Combination of 50% soil-50% compost + Rhizobium, T-3: Combination of 50% soil-50% compost + Trichoderma, T-4: Combination of 50% soil-50% compost with micronized dolomite + Rhizobium and T-5: Combination of 50% soil-50% compost with micronized dolomite + Trichoderma. Morphological growth indicators were measured at 60 days and production of dry aerial biomass at the time of transplant. Results: the results show that in Trial-I the best variant was T-3: soil 50%+IHPLUS®BF enriched Biochar 25%+ash 25%. Test-II, all the variants studied were superior to the control. Abstract The use of growth regulators (GRs) in a mechanized bench grafting system is essential for the final quality of grafted grapevine plants. In Brazil, the GRs used (commercial waxes) are imported, increasing the production cost for nurseries. This work aimed to test the in vitro callus co-cultivation technique as a strategy for prospecting effective doses and mixtures of GRs for in vivo graft union on grapevines. Two genotypes were used as scions (‘Bordo’ and ‘Riesling Italico’) and two as rootstocks (‘SO4’ and ‘P1103’). Callus from different scion/rootstock combinations were co-cultivated, varying the doses (0.25 to 20 mg l-1) of auxins (DBA, IAA and IBA) and cytokinin (BAP), following the Doehlert design. The best in vitro treatments were validated in vivo, in plants grafted with an ‘omega’ cutter machine. Multivariate and non-parametric methods were applied to integrate the results. In vitro prospecting combined with the in vivo validation strategy allowed us to select effectively the IAA(2.50 mg l-1) plus BAP(1.00 mg l-1) formulation with the potential to induce graft callus union similar to commercial waxes. The induction intensity varied among the genetic combinations but was similar in the in vitro and in vivo conditions.

Introduction: Health education and motivation are essential public health tools and effective primary preventive methods. Nurseries can serve as ideal settings for health promotion. Purpose: To organize and conduct oral health education and motivation panel for children and parents in nurseries. Materials and methods: A motivational and educational panel for nursery-age children and their parents was created. The panel included 1. Motivational and educational module for parents in the form of a PowerPoint lecture; 2. Motivational and educational module for children - fairytale - "How Yoni defeats the Tooth Monsters" and two games - "What Mr. Toothy likes to eat "and "Let us wipe the germs from Mr. Toothy." Results: All mothers confirmed that the PowerPoint presentation was helpful. Nearly 98% of mothers learned new and valuable things about teething. The same percentage of mothers admitted that they had gained new knowledge on increasing their child's interest in performing regular oral hygiene. The results showed increased interest in oral hygiene and diet games in both groups of children included in the educational panel. The older children get, the more interest they show in listening to fairytales. Conclusion: Mothers and children have received the module very well, so it would be a valuable part of any nursery program.

Abstract In this study, we analyzed the altitudinal distribution and body condition of the juvenile migratory fish Megaleporinus obtusidens and Salminus brasiliensis in the Uruguay River, a South American subtropical river. We used the presence/absence data and condition factor (K) of juveniles as indicators to try to characterize some recruitment patterns of migratory fish in the main channel of the Uruguay River. Gillnet sampling was conducted during two reproductive years, 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 (November and March of each reproductive year), in three Uruguay River stretches at different levels of altitude. The nets remained in the water for 10-12 hours per night or day for 10 days during each field trip (NOV-15, MAR-16, NOV-16, and MAR-17). The abundance of M. obtusidens juveniles were similar between the two reproductive years, whereas S. brasiliensis capture was higher during the 2015-2016 reproductive year. The probability of finding M. obtusidens juveniles in the Uruguay River was negatively correlated (p < 0.05) with the altitudinal gradient of the sampling points, as shown by the GLM model. For S. brasiliensis, the logit model indicated a non-significant probabilistic relationship (p > 0.05) between the presence of juveniles of this fish species and the altitude gradient. Regarding the body condition of juveniles, the water quality of the sampling points did not affect the juvenile condition factor for either species; however, a positive relationship (p < 0.05) was found with the water level for both species, even with an adjusted R2 of 0.13 for M. obtusidens and 0.48 to S. brasiliensis. Altitude gradient and water level were factors that may affect the juvenile distribution and body condition of these species, respectively, in the Uruguay River. Therefore, this information can be used in hydropower generation policies to conserve migratory fish populations in the Uruguay River Basin.

Veronica peregrina L. (Plantaginaceae) is a native species to North and South America and an alien to Europe. This species was first found in Lithuania in 1829, and no later records were made for almost two centuries. In May 2023, Veronica peregrina was rediscovered in Vilnius, Lithuania. Groups of plants and solitary individuals were scattered over ca. 1500 m². A total of about 700 individuals were found. Observed plants belong to the type subspecies Veronica peregrina L. subsp. peregrina. It is presumed that seeds of Veronica peregrina could have been introduced with plants from nurseries. The spread of this species in anthropogenic habitats in Lithuania is quite likely. Veronica peregrina is currently considered a casual alien in Lithuania. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Policies and institutions shape the incentives that influence innovation, technology adoption and productivity. We characterise the robusta coffee planting material pipeline in Uganda that connects upstream innovation in improved germplasm to downstream coffee producers. A nationally representative survey of coffee nursery operators reveals poor and heterogeneous production practices, potentially reflecting shifting policy priorities. The majority of smallholder coffee farmers consequently get inferior, disease-prone seedlings—thereby locking in decades of continued low productivity. Given Uganda's ambition to drastically increase coffee production, detecting, understanding and addressing these problems should be a top priority as a prerequisite to effective agricultural policy and enhanced productivity. Background and objectivesGuidelines encourage exclusive breastfeeding for healthy newborns but lack specificity regarding criteria for medically indicated supplementation, including type, timing, and best practices. We set out to describe practice patterns and provider perspectives regarding medically indicated supplementation of breastfeeding newborns across the United States.MethodsFrom 2017 to 2018, we surveyed the Better Outcomes through Research for Newborns representative from each Better Outcomes through Research for Newborns hospital regarding practices related to medically indicated supplementation. We used descriptive statistics to compare practices between subgroups defined by breastfeeding prevalence and used qualitative methods and an inductive approach to describe provider opinions.ResultsOf 96 providers representing discrete hospitals eligible for the study, 71 participated (74% response rate). Practices related to criteria for supplementation and pumping and to type and caloric density of supplements varied widely between hospitals, especially for late preterm infants, whereas practices related to lactation consultant availability and hand expression education were more consistent. The most commonly reported criterion for initiating supplementation was weight loss of ≥10% from birth weight, and bottle-feeding was the most commonly reported method; however, practices varied widely. Abstract Background In England, the emergence the more transmissible SARS-CoV-2 variant Alpha (B.1.1.7) led to a third national lockdown from December 2020, including restricted attendance at schools. Nurseries, however, remained fully open. COVID-19 outbreaks (≥ 2 laboratory-confirmed cases within 14 days) in nurseries were investigated to assess the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection and cumulative incidence in staff and children over a three-month period when community SARS-CoV-2 infections rates were high and the Alpha variant was spreading rapidly across England. Methods This was a cross-sectional national investigation of COVID-19 outbreaks in nurseries across England. Nurseries reporting a COVID-19 outbreak to PHE between November 2020 and January 2021 were requested to complete a questionnaire about their outbreak. Results Three hundred and twenty-four nurseries, comprising 1% (324/32,852) of nurseries in England, reported a COVID-19 outbreak. Of the 315 (97%) nurseries contacted, 173 (55%) reported 1,657 SARS-CoV-2 cases, including 510 (31%) children and 1,147 (69%) staff. A child was the index case in 45 outbreaks (26%) and staff in 125 (72%) outbreaks. Overall, children had an incidence rate of 3.50% (95%CI, 3.21–3.81%) and was similar irrespective of whether the index case was a child (3.55%; 95%CI, 3.01–4.19%) or staff (3.44%; 95%CI, 3.10–3.82%). Among staff, cumulative incidence was lower if the index case was a child (26.28%; 95%CI, 23.54–29.21%%) compared to a staff member (32.98%; 95%CI, 31.19–34.82%), with the highest cumulative incidence when the index case was also a staff member (37.52%; 95%CI, 35.39–39.70%). The development of grapes (Vitis vinifera) has obstacle among others are limited optimal land and difficult nurseries. Suboptimal land use for grape cuttings can use red yellow podzolic soil (ultisol). Podzolic soil has an acidic pH and low macro and micro nutrient uptake but can still be used as a growing medium. Vierul local grapes are a type of grape that has begun to be developed as root stock in nurseries but needs to be improved for its root success using a synthetic phytohormones bath of napthaline acetic acid (NAA). The purpose of this study was to determine the morphological character of vierul local grape cuttings at various concentrations of NAA soaking in podzolic soil growing medium. This research has been carried out in a screen house from August to December 2021. This study used a non-factorial completely randomized design (CRD) with 3 treatments and 3 replications as block consisting of F0, F1, F2, F4 following by 0, 2, 4, 6 g L-1 respectively. The morphological characteristics observed is number of bud break, time of leaves appear, number of leaves, tendril length and percentage of live cuttings. The results of the study were analyzed using ANOVA at the 5% level and continued using the DMRT at the 5% level. The result showed that soaking of NAA at a concentration of 0 g L-1 (F0) had the best result for the variable number of bud break and number of leaves. Concentration of 6 g L-1 (F3) had the best result for variable length of the tendril while for the variable when the leaves appear, NAA soaking has no significant effect. The percentage of live cuttings is still low because it is influenced by the quality (material) of cuttings, the age of woodstock, growing media and water availability.

Fusarium circinatum is one of the many threats to forests and Pinus nurseries all over the world, being classified as a quarantine organism by several organizations and governing bodies, such as the European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization (EPPO) and the European Union (EU), with associated phytosanitary measures in place to prevent its spread through the various means of dispersal. One such means of dispersal is the water used for irrigation in nurseries, which can contain fungal propagules. Three different treatments, namely, Desogerme, Intra Hydrocare and sodium hypochlorite (NaClO), were tested for their efficacy in eliminating F. circinatum spores in water at several concentrations. Those that showed 100% disinfection rates were selected for further assays regarding seed germination and water quality impact. From these studies, Desogerme 1% and Intra Hydrocare 4% were then selected for large-scale seed germination and plant certification assays in nurseries, where they showed promising results in regard to the prevention of infections in nurseries, and in this way, contribute to the efforts of mitigating this disease. Apple decline, responsible for seedlings root and collar rot in nurseries, is an important disease. Some Oomycetes species were associated with this disease. This study aimed to control this severe decline disease. The effect of six chemical products against Pythium ultimum and Phytopythium mercuriale associated with apple seedling decline was evaluated using in vitro poisoned food technique and in vivo greenhouse assays. The carbendazim was effective at 10 ppm against P. mercuriale (89.3%), while at 100 and 250 ppm the values were 70.06% and 75.30% for P. ultimum, respectively. The dose 2000 ppm of mancozeb completely inhibited the mycelial growth of P. mercuriale and P. ultimum. However, fosetyl-Al applied at 2000 ppm revealed an inhibition percent of 51 and 100% for P. ultimum and P. mercuriale, respectively. Regarding Hymexazol, the highest inhibition rates were against P. mercuriale (100%) and P. ultimum (90.55%) for 60 ppm. Chinosol revealed to be effective against P. mercuriale for all doses. It was effective against P. ultimum at 50 ppm (90.96%). The highest inhibition rate (86.59%) exhibited by metalaxyl-M was for P. ultimum at 120 ppm. In vivo test showed the efficacy of fosetyl-Al, metalaxyl-M + mancozeb, and chinosol to reduce root browning due to P. ultimum by 55.67%, 44.33%, and 55.67%, respectively, and improved the aerial part sanitary states of seedlings inoculated by P. mercuriale by 60.06, 49.85 and 49.85%, respectively. The chinosol improved the sanitary states of the aerial part of seedlings inoculated by P. ultimum.

AimThis study was conducted to evaluate attention to and knowledge of oral care in children aged 0–3 years, on the basis of data collected from early years educators working with this age group. Information was also collected about the oral hygiene practices adopted in nurseries and the types of food provided, with the aim of increasing knowledge and raising awareness of this topic.Materials and methodsA questionnaire was created using the “Google Forms” program and sent to all the 47 nurseries in the city of Pavia and Vigevano.ResultsTwenty establishments agreed to take part in the research. Assessment of knowledge and of awareness of oral care among early years educators caring for children in the age range 0–3 years revealed variability and some confusion. The results showed a general lack of attention to oral care in the period before the milk teeth appear, as well as limited use of gauze swabs. There was generally some use of educational play focusing on this issue, albeit not daily across all the nurseries participating in the survey. Nurseries rarely had the support of a professional dental hygienist to raise awareness among early years educators and parents.ConclusionsThe findings obtained through this study indicate that, in the area surveyed, there is a lack of widespread knowledge and awareness of oral prevention in young children, and of the oral hygiene maintenance techniques to use in this age group. This suggests a need to develop preventive protocols to improve knowledge and awareness of children's oral health among the adults who care for them.

BackgroundGlobally, there were 2.7 million neonatal deaths in 2015. Significant mortality reduction could be achieved by improving care in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC), where the majority of deaths occur. Determining the physical readiness of facilities to identify and manage complications is an essential component of strategies to reduce neonatal mortality.MethodsWe developed clinical cascades for 6 common neonatal conditions then utilized these to assess 23 health facilities in Kenya and Uganda at 2 time-points in 2016 and 2017. We calculated changes in resource availability over time by facility using McNemar's test. We estimated mean readiness and loss of readiness for the 6 conditions and 3 stages of care (identification, treatment, monitoring-modifying treatment). We estimated overall mean readiness and readiness loss across all conditions and stages. Finally, we compared readiness of facilities with a newborn special care unit (NSCU) to those without using the two-sample test of proportions.ResultsThe cascade model estimated mean readiness of 26.3-26.6% across the 3 stages for all conditions. Mean readiness ranged from 11.6% (respiratory distress-apnea) to 47.8% (essential newborn care) across both time-points. The model estimated overall mean readiness loss of 30.4-31.9%. There was mild to moderate variability in the timing of readiness loss, with the majority occurring in the identification stage. Overall mean readiness was higher among facilities with a NSCU (36.8%) compared to those without (20.0%).ConclusionThe cascade model provides a novel approach to quantitatively assess physical readiness for neonatal care. Among 23 facilities in Kenya and Uganda, we identified a consistent pattern of 30-32% readiness loss across cascades and stages. This aggregate measure could be used to monitor and compare readiness at the facility-, health system-, or national-level. Estimates of readiness and loss of readiness may help guide strategies to improve care, prioritize resources, and promote neonatal survival in LMICs.

Background: In England, the emergence the more transmissible SARS-CoV-2 variant Alpha (B.1.1.7) led to a third national lockdown from December 2020, including restricted attendance at schools. Nurseries, however, remained fully open. COVID-19 outbreaks (≥ 2 laboratory-confirmed cases within 14 days) in nurseries were investigated to assess the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection and cumulative incidence in staff and children over a three-month period when community SARS-CoV-2 infections rates were high and the Alpha variant was spreading rapidly across England.Methods: This was a cross-sectional national investigation of COVID-19 outbreaks in nurseries across England. Nurseries reporting a COVID-19 outbreak to PHE between November 2020 and January 2021 were requested to complete a questionnaire about their outbreak.Results: Three hundred and twenty-four nurseries, comprising 1% (324/32,852) of nurseries in England, reported a COVID-19 outbreak. Of the 315 (97%) nurseries contacted, 173 (55%) reported 1,657 SARS-CoV-2 cases, including 510 (31%) children and 1,147 (69%) staff. A child was the index case in 45 outbreaks (26%) and staff in 125 (72%) outbreaks. Overall, children had an incidence rate of 3.50% (95%CI, 3.21-3.81%) and was similar irrespective of whether the index case was a child (3.55%; 95%CI, 3.01-4.19%) or staff (3.44%; 95%CI, 3.10-3.82%). Among staff, cumulative incidence was lower if the index case was a child (26.28%; 95%CI, 23.54-29.21%%) compared to a staff member (32.98%; 95%CI, 31.19-34.82%), with the highest cumulative incidence when the index case was also a staff member (37.52%; 95%CI, 35.39-39.70%). Compared to November 2020, outbreak sizes and cumulative incidence was higher in January 2021, when the Alpha variant predominated. Nationally, SARS-CoV-2 infection rates in < 5 year-olds remained low and followed trends in older age-groups, increasing during December 2020 and declining thereafter.Conclusions: In this cross-sectional study of COVID-19 outbreaks in nurseries, one in three staff were affected compared to one in thirty children. There was some evidence of increased transmissibility and higher cumulative incidence associated with the Alpha variant, highlighting the importance of maintaining a low level of community infections. Peach decline, responsible for seedlings root and collar rot in nurseries, is an important disease that causes reduction in plant production. Several oomycetes species were associated with this disease. The aim of this study was to control this serious peach decline disease using several assays such as; in vitro poisoned food technique and in vivo greenhouse assay. About six chemical fungicides were evaluated for their in vitro and in vivo inhibitory potentials against Pythium ultimum and Phytophthora citrophthora associated with this disease, respectively. The in vitro poisoned food technique demonstrated highly significant difference in the efficacy of the fungicides used at the five tested doses (10, 25, 50, 100 µg\ l and application rate). Carbendazim inhibited Pythium ultimum and P. citrophthora by 75.30 % and 100 % at 250 µg\ l. For Mancozeb, the inhibition % achieved by the registered dose was 100 % for Pythium ultimum and 50 % for P. citrophthora at 2000 µg\l. The registered dose (2000 µg\ l) of Fosetyl-Al inhibited Pythium ultimum and P. citrophthora by 51 % and 100 %, respectively. The highest rates of inhibition induced by Hymexazol were recorded at 60 µg\ l (90.55 % for Pythium ultimum and 94.49 % for P. citrophthora). In case of Chinosol, inhibition percentages of 90.30 % and 90.96 % for P. citrophthora and Pythium ultimum; respectively, were achieved at the tested concentration of 50 µg\ l, and the same inhibition values were also recorded for both tested concentrations of 100 and 2000 µg\ l. The highest inhibition rates for Metalaxyl-M against Pythium ultimum were observed at the dose of 100 µg\ l (79.70 %), whereas the used dose of 120 µg\ l recorded 86.59 %. The in vivo greenhouse assays demonstrated the efficacy of the Fosetyl-Al and Metalaxyl-M in reducing the peach seedling root browning induced by Pythium ultimum by 62.55 %. However, all the tested chemicals neither improved the growth and health status of the peach seedlings, nor reduced root browning of the seedlings inoculated with P. citrophthora.

ObjectiveStandardized practices for the management of neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) are associated with shorter lengths of stay, but optimal protocols are not established. We sought to identify practice variations for newborns with in utero chronic opioid exposure among hospitals in the Better Outcomes Through Research for Newborns (BORN) network.MethodsNursery site leaders completed a survey about hospitals' policies and practices regarding care for infants with chronic opioid exposure (≥3 weeks).ResultsThe 76 (80%) of 95 respondent hospitals were in 34 states, varied in size (8000 births and 200 opioid-exposed infants per year), with most affiliated with academic centers (89%). Most (80%) had protocols for newborn drug exposure screening; 90% used risk-based approaches. Specimens included urine (85%), meconium (76%), and umbilical cords (10%). Of sites (88%) with NAS management protocols, 77% addressed medical management, 72% nursing care, 72% pharmacologic treatment, and 58% supportive care. Morphine was the most common first-line pharmacotherapy followed by methadone. Observation periods for opioid-exposed newborns varied; 57% observed short-acting opioid exposure for 2 to 3 days, while 30% observed for ≥5 days. For long-acting opioids, 71% observed for 4 to 5 days, 19% for 2 to 3 days, and 8% for ≥7 days. Observation for NAS occurred mostly in level 1 nurseries (86%); however, most (87%) transferred to NICUs when pharmacologic treatment was indicated.ConclusionsMost BORN hospitals had protocols for the care of opioid-exposed infants, but policies varied widely and characterized areas of needed research. Identification of variation is the first step toward establishing best practice standards to improve care for this rapidly growing population.

Abstract Half of the territory in Rio de Janeiro (RJ) state is composed of degraded areas. This work evaluated the profile, distribution, and production capacity of plant nurseries in RJ which produce forest seedlings, as well as their species’ richness. The potential to meet the increased demand arising from environmental commitments in different hydrographic regions was also analyzed. We identified 81 active forest seedling nurseries and 73 of them participated in our interview, by adopting a regional survey. Nearly one-third of the nurseries closed down in this region in the last decade. A high richness of species in the nurseries (977 species, 99 native species/nursery) was found, representing 22% of the regional flora. Most of this species’ richness is exclusively produced by small nurseries. The current production of the nurseries is capable of supplying less than 1% of the potential demand for seedlings for restoring priority watershed areas in the state.

The quality of coffee seedlings obtained in nurseries is a determining factor in the achievement of highly productive plantations. Was carried out an experiment in Tope de Collantes, with the objective to evaluate the effect of FitoMas-E and two proportions of organic matter in the substrate on the growth of coffee seedlings in the nursery stage. Was evaluated the effectiveness of four dose concentrations of FitoMas-E (0, 2, 4 and 6 ml L-1), and two soil proportions - organic matter (bovine manure) in the substrate (3:1 and 5:1), about the growth of the seedlings, with an experimental design totally randomized with bifactorial arrangement. The height of the plant, diameter of the shaft, foliar area and total dry mass of the seedlings to the were evaluated seven months after seeds were set down. The results evidence that the application of FitoMas-E it influences positively in the growth of the coffee seedlings, with increments of their efficiency, in the measure that the doses are increased independently of the conformation of the substrate. The dose of 6 ml L-1 was the most efficient and it was evidenced that with the application of the bioprepared it is possible to diminish the levels of organic matter in the substrate, without affecting the quality of the coffee seedling.

This review aims to provide a comprehensive and in-depth analysis of recent sustainable practices in vegetable seedling nurseries. Here, we thoroughly analysed 604 articles and 3553 keywords from the Scopus database, utilizing qualitative and quantitative methods, covering the past 20 yr. We conducted a bibliometric analysis using VOSviewer software. to identify the most relevant study topics. The design of seed trays, seed enhancement treatments, and controlled environmental conditions are crucial for generating optimal seedlings and transplants. Additionally, sustainable growing media are necessary to optimize resources and reduce input use. We identified grafting and LED lighting technology as rapidly advancing technologies in seedling production. Furthermore, applying biostimulants and beneficial microorganisms as booster agents can enhance efficiency and promote sustainable production. The findings of this study offer valuable insights into the research trends for vegetable seedlings and transplants, underscoring the imperative for adopting sustainable practices within the nursery industry. A total of 18 mollusk species were recovered, most of them invasive. Nematodes were identified by sequencing the D2-D3 expansion segments of the large subunit (LSU or 28S) rRNA. Based on these surveys, P. californica was the most widespread species (37 isolates, 53.6% recovery); followed by P. hermaphrodita (26 isolates; 37.7% recovery); P. papillosa and a closely related P. papillosa isolate (6 isolates; 8.7% recovery). Nematode isolates were mainly collected from four invasive slugs (Deroceras reticulatum, D. laeve, Arion hortensis agg, Ambigolimax valentianus) and snails (Oxychilus spp. and Discus spp.).
