- Abstract
This book discusses inner peace from an Islamic theological and spiritual perspective, the writings of Said Nursi, a twentieth century Muslim scholar. Inner peace is a topic of great interest in the world at present. While happiness and mental health have been extensively discussed from a psychological and sociological perspective, and while inner peace has been written about from various religious viewpoints, there is very little scholarly work on inner peace from an Islamic theological and spiritual perspective. This book addresses this significant gap. With Islam being the second largest religion in the world, this book provides an important contribution to the literature on a faith tradition which is followed by so many. In addressing the intersection between Islam, spirituality and psychology, this book makes an original contribution to the literature on modern Islamic thinkers like Nursi, and to the broader fields of Islamic studies, and theology, philosophy and well-being studies.

- Abstract
This book examines how the prominent Muslim scholar Said Nursi developed an integrative approach to faith and science known as'the other indicative'(mana-i harfi) and explores how his aim to reconcile two academic disciplines, often at odds with one another, could be useful in an educational context. The book opens by examining Nursi's evolving thought with regards to secular ideology and modern science. It then utilizes the mana-i harfi approach to address a number of issues, including truth and certainty, the relationship between knowledge and worldview formation, and the meaning of beings and life. Finally, it offers a seven-dimensional knowledge approach to derive meaning and build good character through understanding scientific knowledge in the mana-i harfi perspective. This book offers a unique perspective on one of recent Islam's most influential figures, and also offers suggestions for teaching religion and science in a more nuanced way. It is, therefore, a great resource for scholars of Islam, religion and science, Middle East studies, and educational studies.

- Abstract
Contemporary Islamic theology remains a neglected area in studies on Islam. This work is dedicated to the thought and ideas of Said Nursi (1876-1960), one of the most prominent Muslim theologians of the twentieth century. Nursi inspired a faith movement--the Nur community--that originated in Turkey. It continues to play a key role in the revival of Islam and now numbers several millions of followers worldwide. His legacy and impact deserve therefore to be examined more closely. This volume is the most substantial overview in English of the inspiration of Said Nursi and his masterpiece the Risale-i Nur. In the beginning, the essays provide the reader with Nursi's historical context and biography. Then Nursi's theological views, his understanding of society, and ideas on politics are placed under the spotlight. Over the last twenty years, more and more comparative religion specialists in the West have become acquainted with Said Nursi. Nursi studies is now an established discipline, and this volume is a celebration of that reality. As it reveals, Muslims and Christians are grappling with the wisdom of this remarkable, rich thinker.

- Abstract
This book explores the theology and philosophy of the distinguished modern Muslim scholar and theologian Bediuzzaman Said Nursi [d.1960]. Nursi wrote in both Ottoman Turkish and Arabic and his life and thought reflected the transition of modern Turkey from an empire to a secular republic. The contributors to this volume shed new light on two major dimensions of Nursi's thought: theodicy and justice. Classical Muslim theologians debated these two important issues; however, we must consider the modern debate of these issues in the context of the radical political and social transformations of modern Turkey. Nursi explored these matters as they related to the development of state and society and the crisis of Islam in the modern secular nation-state. Nursi is the founder of a'faith movement'in contemporary Turkey with millions of followers worldwide. In this book, distinguished scholars in Islamic, Middle Eastern, and Turkish Studies explore Nursi's thought on theodicy and justice in comparison with a number of western philosophers, theologians, and men of letters, such as Dante, Merton, Kant, and Moltman. This book presents an invaluable resource for studies in comparative religion, philosophy, and Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies.

- Abstract
God, Man, Mortality is a collection of essays written both by seasoned and by up and coming scholars working the field known as Nursi studies. The aim of these essays is to hold a mirror up to Nursi's teachings on a number of issues, just as Nursi held a mirror up to the teachings of the Qur'an. The scope is broad covering subjects such as Divine immanence and transcendence, human spirituality and man's role as Divine vicegerent. Divine determining and free will, and human conscience as evidence of the existence of God. The topics presented by the authors are unashamedly theocentric in nature: discussions on politics and legal theory are conspicuous by their absence. We benefit from the depth of awareness that the contributors clearly have of Nursi's teachings and his place in the Muslim academe, as well as from their lucid expository styles and strong authorial voices.

They also provide people with the essentials or basic principles on which the branches of Islamic knowledge and Islamic science are based. Thus, we have tried to collect many of these principles in this book under certain titles, and in certain parts or sections according to the fields of thought and branches of knowledge to which they have a greater relevance.

SOCIAL perception , *CHARISMATIC authority , *GENERATION gap , *WAQF , *SOCIAL capital , *CHARISMA - Abstract
Said Nursi, who lived between 1878 and 1960, is a well-known cleric, both during the Ottoman era and in the Republic of Turkey. Said Nursi, a charismatic religious authority in terms of Weber's conception of charisma, has been influential in many parts of Anatolia by writing a collection called Risale-i Nur over a period of 23 years. After his death, the 'Mesveret delegation', which was created by his close disciples, and the 'Waqf (Elder) brothers' appointed by this delegation to the houses opened in the dormitory, provided the institutionalization of the movement and the routineization of charisma. The "Waqf brothers", who devoted their life to the truths of faith, the Quran and the Risale-i Nur, increased in number with the growth of the movement. Some of the Waqf (elder) brothers "who cut oneself off from the worldly things, did not have a profession and did not marry" left their devotional life for various reasons. The tendency of individualization and secularization, such as getting married and having a profession, is more prominent in the decision to leave the devotional life. However, reasons such as intergenerational conflict, intra-group power struggle, change in religious perception style and social capital increase appear to be other factors. The purpose of the study is to reveal, from a sociological point of view, under which factors the 'Waqf (Abi) brothers', seen in the Nur movement, gave up their foundation status. - Abstract
This collection of essays written by Thomas Michel offers an insightful and comparative analysis into the life, thoughts and major writings of Said Nursi. It provides insight into a deep conversation taking place between a Catholic priest and a Muslim theologian. This sincere and humble collection of essays will be an indispensable reading for believers of all faiths and backgrounds with an interest in social and contemporary issues. Michel remarks that Nursi called for unity and cooperation between the Muslim-Christian communities fifty years before the Vatican II called upon Christians and Muslims to recognize that they should move beyond the conflicts of the past and work together for the common good to build peace, establish social justice, defend moral values, and promote true human freedom.

- Abstract
Contemporary Islamic thinkers are often studied sociologically rather than as theologians. There are many accessible introductions to Christian theologians, but very few such studies of Islamic thinkers. This book, and this series, seeks to change this situation: offering new introductions to influential Islamic thinkers and engaging, at the level of ideas, with the rich depths of contemporary Islamic theology. This book introduces to the English-speaking world the leading modern Islamic thinker Said Nursi (1878-1960) - who has some nine million followers in modern day Turkey and around the world. After an opening chapter that provides an overview of his life, the next four chapters outline the theology of Nursi on God, the Qur'an, the West and Politics. The final section provides an invaluable resource of readings from Nursi's most important writings. Providing an introduction to a major form of Islam which is committed to non-violence, dialogue and constructive relationships with the West, this is the first student textbook to introduce a contemporary Islamic theologian in a systematic way.

- Abstract
Too often interfaith dialogue is generic and unfocused. Often it involves'liberals'from each tradition coming together to criticize the'conservatives'in their own traditions. This book provides a model for interfaith dialogue that challenges very directly the'dialogue industry'. This book involves a Christian theologian in deep conversation with a Muslim theologian. Bediuzzaman Said Nursi (1877-1960) was born at the end of the Ottoman Empire and lived through the emergence of an aggressive secular state. He had to think through, in remarkably creative ways, the challenge of faith within a secular environment, the relationship of faith and politics, and the implications and challenge of diversity and difference. His entire project is captured in his magnum opus'The Risale-i Nur'. In the first eight chapters of this book, we engage closely with the thought of Nursi and tease out insights that Christians can learn from and accommodate. Having established the method, the second section of the book examines the precise implications for the interfaith movement. The problem with the interfaith movement is that it is an act of western cultural imperialism - they are taking the individualist assumptions of modern America and imposing them on the conversation. The problems with John Hick's and Leonard Swidler's approach are exposed. Moving out from Islam, the book then demonstrates how the model of interfaith changes when Christians are in conversation with Hinduism in India. A new set of Dialogue Ten Commandments are suggested. The book concludes with an appeal for a commitment to include and reach the'conservatives'in the major religious traditions.

Bediüzzaman Said Nursi, the eponymous progenitor of the contemporary Nurculuk movement, was arguably the most influential, if woefully under-researched, Turkish Muslim thinker of the twentieth century. Nurculuk, a faith-based movement consisting of an estimated seven million followers worldwide, stands out from other contemporary Muslim religious and ideological groupings not only for its uncompromising focus on the renewal of individual rather than collective faith, but also for its eschewal of any kind of religiously legitimized violence or militancy for the sake of politico-ideological ends. This article is an attempt at an overview of Nursi's idiosyncratically irenic approach to the highly contentious issue of jihad, itself key to our understanding of the staunch apoliticism he espoused in later life. The premise of this article is that we can learn something about the spirituality as well as other orientations of Bediüzzaman Said Nursi and the movement he inspired by taking a comparative perspective. Among other twentieth-century movements in the Muslim world, it has been suggested that the 'faith' movement of Maulana Muhammad Ilyas, also known as the Tablighi Jamaat, would be the most apt for comparison. This study therefore highlights comparable and contrasting aspects of these two movements in order to shed light on Nursian spirituality. It will consider, for example, the lives of the founders, the contexts in which their activities arose, their teachings and practices, and the subsequent development of the respective movements. This essay scrutinizes how the conceptualization of the notion of ‘miracle’ varies in the works of contemporary Muslim authors who share (but differently define) the assumption that Islam and science enjoy a special harmony. Their positions are analyzed after a brief reconstruction of the multiple meanings of the very term ‘miracle’ and an historical excursus on the Christian and Muslim tradition respectively. I argue that such variation is dependent on each author’s understanding of science and technology, and complementarily, on the prestige and appeal exerted by science and technology on the authors’ respective readership.

Regarding to structural and cultural transformations of society and politics experienced in Turkey through the early republican period, social forces that create the Ottoman İslamic imagination especially by using rural dynamics, have developed various strategies of opposition. These strategies are related closely with the fact that in which manner the religion interpretations created by ehlisünnet schools based around the Anatolian geography, are eligible to supply life, belief and politics with legitimacy. These ways of opposition in which non-violent forms are widely seen, pursued a way in their accord before the neo Turkish State’s ideological gaining. This study, while defining the styles of opposition in such way, through the content of non-violent resistence, civil disobedience focused on how such social groups emerging by the perspective of ehlisünnet, expressed a style of opposition in the conditions of Repuplican Turkey. It is touched uppon that the styles created a perspective of faith centered religious opposition different than those of civil disobedience and terrorism. In this line, the Nurcu movement centered by Said Nursi and Rifaîlik movement centered by Kenan Rifaî, taken under the projection. It is defined that these movements are examples of two traditions that of tasavvuf and medrese which has forged the Ottoman İslamic and political imagination. Consequently, It is observed that the Rifai and Nurcu movements, by the light of religious interpretations that each are produced, distinctively defined different opposition strategies. The base that these differences rest upon is the production of the cosmological, ontological and methodological production of two big line of tasavvuf tradition which are the philosophy of vahdet-i şuhut and vahdet-i vücut. In the light of these differences, thesis as a conclusion is defining how rifailik and nurculuk give way to different organizations through their own resistance strategies

Dini gruplarda her birisi kendiilgilendiği vazifeyi yaparsa ortaya çıkan ürün herkesin olacaktır. Nursi, buyaklaşımıyla bir ihtilaf ahlakını ortaya koymakta ve müspet ihtilafın hikmetianlaşılmadığı takdirde neticede menfi ihtilafın ortaya çıkacağına dikkat çekmektedir.Anahtar Kelimeler: Dini Gruplar, Çatışma, İhtilaf, İhtilaf Ahlakı, Cemaat, Mezhep,Said Nursi, Baskılama, Dışlama Disagreement and conflict have been the most formidable puzzlementsthroughout the history and in the current epoch. Individuals who belong to the samereligion in the course of the time, because of some reasons, become divided and theyget apart as cults, communities, groups by behaving divisively. Cults, sects, communities and religious groups are in nature means to help people live their religionin accord with their life style and requirement of the region they live in. Theproblematic point is that these different aspects of these groups are not perceived asrichness, that people are not able to be glad with each other's virtue, and that peoplehold discriminative attitudes as such that they regard themselves as the sole owner ofthe truth and others as deceivers.Bediuzzaman Said Nursi divided the disagreement between religious groupsinto two as positive and negative disagreement. If a religious group acts in such a waythat it enjoys its way of religious style and does not intervene with other groups' wayof religious style and does not disturb them, this type of attitude is seen as positivedisagreement accroding to Nursi. Otherwise, negative disagreements arise. Nursi doesnot eliminate all disagreements via considering the words of Prophet Muhammed`disagreement among my umma is bounty`. According to Said Nursi, every reliousgroup services one aspect of the truth via their activities.Nursi describes disagreement among religious groups as division of labor, andsees every group as a wheel of the whole factory. Every wheel works accordingly andas a whole, they end up in producing a common good. If every religious group dealswith its own task, the resulting product would be beneficial to the whole. Nursi, withthis approach, states the ethics of disagreement, and draws attention to consequencesof negative disagreement which results from misunderstanding of the use ofdisagreement.Key Words: Religious Groups, Conflict, Disagreement, Ethics ofdisagreement, Community, Sect, Said Nursi, Oppression, Discrimination 129

Anahtar Sözcükler: Said Nursi, Nurculuk, Mehmet Kırkıncı, Meşveret Grubu. `Risale-i Nur` is a book that beared witness to the absolutist regime, the constutional period of Ottoman Empires and the republic period of Turkey. Said Nursi'nin Risale-i Nur adlı eserlerinde sözünü ettiği metodun ilkeleri aynı zamanda Nurculuk hareketinin faaliyetlerini belirleyen bir hizmet metodudur. Burada, Said Nursi'nin özellikle 1923-1950 yılları arasındaki siyasal iktidara karşı sergilediği şiddeti dışlayan, siyaset-dışı mücadelesinin dönüştürücü etkileri incelenmektedir. Müspet Hareketin daha iyi anlaşılabilmesi adına sivil itaatsizliğin temel unsurları ile birlikte direnme hakkı tarihsel planda incelenmiş, çeşitli düşünürlerin kavrama kazandırdığı anlamlara yer verilmiştir. Ayrıca, sivil itaatsizlik kavramını pratik alanda Satyagraha (şiddet dışı direniş) felsefesi ile hayata taşıyan Gandhi'nin mücadelesine yer verilmektedir. Gandhi'nin felsefesinde kendini gösteren yapıcı ve evrensel dilin dönüştürücü etkisinin müspet hareket metodu aracılığıyla da sağlanabileceği düşünülmektedir. In this study, Bediüzzaman Said Nursi's concept of 'positive action' method is presented as an example of civil disobedience. The principles of the `positive action` method that Said Nursi outlines in his works called Risale-i Nur are also a service method which determines the activities of the `Nurculuk` movement. Positive action is seen as an alternative right of resistance which rejects violence in every circumstance and condition in the way to re-gaining fundamental rights and freedoms. The events in the period that Said Nursi calls the `New Said` term are evaluated in the process of examining the `Positive Action` method as an example of civil disobedience. Here, the transforming effects of Said Nursi's non-violent and non-political struggle, which he made against political power especially between the years of 1923-1950, are examined. In order to make `positive action` better understood, the basic elements of civil disobedience together with the right of resistance are examined against their historical background, and the meanings which are given to the concept by various thinkers are discussed. Within this context, the struggle of Gandhi which puts the concept of civil disobedience into practice with the philosophy of Satyagraha (non-violence resistance) is taken into consideration. Finally, it is argued that the transforming effect of the constructive and universal discourse, which is manifested in the philosophy of Gandhi, can be obtained also through the `positive action` method. 157

ABSTRACTSAİD NURSÎ AND POLITICAL OPINIONSIn History of Islamic Sects literature “Sect” or “faction” terms are used to describe the religious grouping and denominational movements in Islam geography. Said Nursi the founder and leader of “Nurculuk” or “Risale-i Nur Movement” which is considered to be one of the contemporary religious movements was an important thinker lived in our region in the 20th century. Said Nursi who has been subject to many scientific investigation with supporters, opposed, millions of followers, and most importantly still living ideas, has never get rid of the center of many arguments while he was living and now because of the huge numbers of supporters and opposed. After being in the active politics in the last period of Ottoman Empire as an representative of “İslamcılık” or “İttihad-ı İslam” ideas, Said Nursi has transferred his ideas from “socio-political area to teleological and philosophical areas after the declaration of Republic and he has declared his political philosophy as “I shelter in God from devil and politics”. Nursi’s this different manner against politics and political bodies are also important since he is the leader of a movement, which has currently millions of supporters. From this point, we hope that this scientific research which is based on the political ideas, relations with political bodies, life and works of Nursi will be useful for academia.
