Bound states in the continuum (BICs) emerge throughout physics as leaky/resonant modes that remain, however, highly localized. They have attracted much attention in photonics, and especially in metasurfaces. One of their most outstanding features is their divergent Q-factors, indeed arbitrarily large upon approaching the BIC condition (quasi-BICs). Here, we investigate how to tune quasi-BICs in magneto-optic (MO) all-dielectric metasurfaces. The impact of the applied magnetic field in the BIC parameter space is revealed for a metasurface consisting of lossless semiconductor spheres with MO response. Through our coupled electric/magnetic dipole formulation, the MO activity is found to manifest itself through the interference of the out-of-plane electric/magnetic dipole resonances with the (MO-induced) in-plane magnetic/electric dipole, leading to a rich, magnetically tuned quasi-BIC phenomenology, resembling the behavior of Brewster quasi-BICs for tilted vertical-dipole resonant metasurfaces. Such resemblance underlies our proposed design for a fast MO switch of a Brewster quasi-BIC by simply reversing the driving magnetic field. This MO-active BIC behavior is further confirmed in the optical regime for a realistic Bi:YIG nanodisk metasurface through numerical calculations. Magneto-optical (MO) effects, viz. magnetically induced changes in light intensity or polarization upon reflection from or transmission through a magnetic sample, were discovered over a century and a half ago. Initially they played a crucially relevant role in unveiling the fundamentals of electromagnetism and quantum mechanics. A more broad-based relevance and wide-spread use of MO methods, however, remained quite limited until the 1960s due to a lack of suitable, reliable and easy-to-operate light sources. The advent of Laser technology and the availability of other novel light sources led to an enormous expansion of MO measurement techniques and applications that continues to this day (see section 1). The here-assembled roadmap article is intended to provide a meaningful survey over many of the most relevant recent developments, advances, and emerging research directions in a rather condensed form, so that readers can easily access a significant overview about this very dynamic research field. While light source technology and other experimental developments were crucial in the establishment of today's magneto-optics, progress also relies on an ever-increasing theoretical understanding of MO effects from a quantum mechanical perspective (see section 2), as well as using electromagnetic theory and modelling approaches (see section 3) to enable quantitatively reliable predictions for ever more complex materials, metamaterials, and device geometries. The latest advances in established MO methodologies and especially the utilization of the MO Kerr effect (MOKE) are presented in sections 4 (MOKE spectroscopy), 5 (higher order MOKE effects), 6 (MOKE microscopy), 8 (high sensitivity MOKE), 9 (generalized MO ellipsometry), and 20 (Cotton-Mouton effect in two-dimensional materials). In addition, MO effects are now being investigated and utilized in spectral ranges, to which they originally seemed completely foreign, as those of synchrotron radiation x-rays (see section 14 on three-dimensional magnetic characterization and section 16 on light beams carrying orbital angular momentum) and, very recently, the terahertz (THz) regime (see section 18 on THz MOKE and section 19 on THz ellipsometry for electron paramagnetic resonance detection). Magneto-optics also demonstrates its strength in a unique way when combined with femtosecond laser pulses (see section 10 on ultrafast MOKE and section 15 on magneto-optics using x-ray free electron lasers), facilitating the very active field of time-resolved MO spectroscopy that enables investigations of phenomena like spin relaxation of non-equilibrium photoexcited carriers, transient modifications of ferromagnetic order, and photo-induced dynamic phase transitions, to name a few. Recent progress in nanoscience and nanotechnology, which is intimately linked to the achieved impressive ability to reliably fabricate materials and functional structures at the nanoscale, now enables the exploitation of strongly enhanced MO effects induced by light-matter interaction at the nanoscale (see section 12 on magnetoplasmonics and section 13 on MO metasurfaces). MO effects are also at the very heart of powerful magnetic characterization techniques like Brillouin light scattering and time-resolved pump-probe measurements for the study of spin waves (see section 7), their interactions with acoustic waves (see section 11), and ultra-sensitive magnetic field sensing applications based on nitrogen-vacancy centres in diamond (see section 17)., Despite our best attempt to represent the field of magneto-optics accurately and do justice to all its novel developments and its diversity, the research area is so extensive and active that there remains great latitude in deciding what to include in an article of this sort, which in turn means that some areas might not be adequately represented here. However, we feel that the 20 sections that form this 2022 magneto-optics roadmap article, each written by experts in the field and addressing a specific subject on only two pages, provide an accurate snapshot of where this research field stands today. The carbon footprint reveals the emission profile of a healthcare building and, when quantified properly, is useful for the design of effective mitigation plans. This article aims to determine the global warming potential associated with the healthcare centre building process in Spain at a 100-year perspective. To this end, six healthcare centres built between 2007 and 2010 were analysed, and the emissions associated with the manufacturing, transport and placement of materials on site – including the final tests and commissioning of the building – were calculated. The results show that the average CO2 equivalent emission per m2 built is 1122.30 kg (standard deviation = 136.46), 1.24 kg (standard deviation = 0.19) per euro spent and 71.35 kg (standard deviation = 7.13) per hour spent on construction. Emissions per user, worker, electrical power and energy consumed were also classified. The material manufacturing and installation stages generate the most emissions, and healthcare centres larger than 2000 m2 appear to emit less CO2 equivalent per m2 when being built than smaller centres. The construction elements that caused most greenhouse gas emissions were also identified. These parameters allow extracting and designing proposals for improvements in environmental management.

Motile archaea swim by means of a molecular machine called the archaellum. This structure consists of a filament attached to a membrane-embedded motor. The archaellum is found exclusively in members of the archaeal domain, but the core of its motor shares homology with the motor of type IV pili (T4P). Here, we provide an overview of the different components of the archaellum machinery and hypothetical models to explain how rotary motion of the filament is powered by the archaellum motor.

Invasive alien species are responsible for several negative impacts worldwide. Managing biological invasions is often difficult and the success rate is quite low, but with good planning it is possible to achieve good results. Besides employing the correct methods and techniques, an overall strategy based on landscape dynamics and expected spatial patterns can be fundamental to achieve success. The decision of where to act can be embedded in a general strategy based on several criteria/goals such as control of large populations, connectivity disruption, and so on. This work focused on Acacia dealbata in a Natura 2000 site in Portugal, how the current amount and distribution can affect the spread pattern, and different possible strategies to approach the management. Based on the species dispersal traits, we argue that not only the area but also the perimeter (therefore, the shape) and location of the patches should be considered when fighting the invasion. Three scenarios were designed and compared using the perimeter–area ratio, a landscape dynamics analysis, and a connectivity index. Results show that removing the patches with higher perimeter–area ratio (mostly small satellite patches) would be more impactful than removing the larger patch or removing random intermediary perimeter–area patches first. After this approach based on landscape dynamics, the employment of a connectivity assessment provided an ordered list of patches to remove sequentially. Overall, this approach can be valuable in the early steps of the planning process, supporting better decisions regarding the available resources and contributing to maximize the effectiveness of the action. Motile archaea are propelled by the archaellum, whose motor complex consists of the membrane protein ArlJ, the ATPase ArlI, and the ATP-binding protein ArlH. Despite its essential function and the existence of structural and biochemical data on ArlH, the role of ArlH in archaellum assembly and function remains elusive. ArlH is a structural homolog of KaiC, the central component of the cyanobacterial circadian clock. Since autophosphorylation and dephosphorylation of KaiC are central properties for the function of KaiC, we asked whether autophosphorylation is also a property of ArlH proteins. We observed that both ArlH from the euryarchaeon Pyrococcus furiosus (PfArlH) and from the crenarchaeon Sulfolobus acidocaldarius (SaArlH) have autophosphorylation activity. Using a combination of single molecule fluorescence measurements and biochemical assays, we show that autophosphorylation of ArlH is closely linked to its oligomeric state when bound to hexameric ArlI. These experiments also strongly suggest that ArlH is a hexamer in its ArlI-bound state. Mutagenesis of the putative catalytic residue (Glu-57 in SaArlH) in ArlH results in a reduced autophosphorylation activity and abolished archaellation and motility in S. acidocaldarius, indicating that optimum phosphorylation activity of ArlH is essential for archaellation and motility.

arXiv:2010.12503v1, High refractive index dielectric spheres present remarkable light-scattering properties in the spectral range dominated by dipolar modes. However, most of these properties are absent for larger spheres under plane wave illumination. Here, a proposal to unravel these dipolar regimes for larger particles under the illumination of a pure dipolar field is presented. This type of illumination ensures that the scattering response of the sphere is purely dipolar. In this scenario, it is shown that Kerker conditions are not only related to duality symmetry and a strong backward-to-forward asymmetric light-scattering, but also to the appearance of non-radiating sources: the so-called hybrid anapoles. INTRODUCTION: In this study, we aim to compare spatial statistic models to estimate the spatial distribution of Zika and Chikungunya infections in the city of Recife, Brazil. We also aim to establish the relationship between the diseases and the analyzed geographical conditions. METHODS: The models were defined by combining three categories: type of spatial unit, calculation of the dependent variable format, and estimation methods (Geographical Weighted Regression [GWR] and Ordinary Least Square [OLS]). We identified the most accurate model to estimate the spatial distribution of the diseases. After selecting the model that provided best results, the relationship between the geographical conditions and the incidence of the diseases was analyzed. RESULTS: It was observed that the matrix of 100 meters (as the spatial unit) showed the highest efficiency to estimate the diseases. The best results were observed in the models that utilized the kernel density estimation (as the calculation of the dependent variable). In all models, the GWR method showed the best results. By considering the OLS coefficient values, it was observed that all geographical conditions are related to the incidence of Zika and Chikungunya, while the GWR coefficient values showed where this relationship was more noticeable. CONCLUSIONS: The model that utilized the combination of the matrix of 100 meters, kernel density estimation (as the calculation of the dependent variable) and GWR method showed the highest efficiency in estimating the spatial distribution of the diseases. The coefficient values showed that all analyzed geographical conditions are related to the illnesses’ incidence.

The design of a sustainable building should include a reduction of its energy consumption, by considering the embodied energy and CO2 emissions generated during material manufacturing, transport and construction processes. A Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) facility in buildings consumes large amounts of energy. The aim of this work is to quantify the embodied carbon and energy of HVAC systems installed in healthcare centers. For this purpose, 6 healthcare centers in the region of Extremadura (Spain) -projected between 2006 and 2009 and built between 2007 and 2010- were analyzed. The results show that the embodied carbon -considering HVAC installations lifetime estimated at 15 years-is equivalent to the CO2 emitted for 2.3 years in the operation phase, and that the embodied energy is approximately 2.65 times the amount used in one year during that phase. Particularly, the average embodied carbon and energy is 48.95 kg of CO2 and 587.32 MJ per m2, respectively, discarding the environmental impact of refrigerant gases. Additionally, different reference indicators are proposed to calculate both parameters according to different structural variables of a given healthcare center, including number of users, number of staff, HVAC installation costs, electrical power and average annual energy consumption.

For this reason different strategies have been developed for their study. In this work, two new microrheometric techniques are presented. Both methods take advantage of the analysis of the polarized emission of an upconverting particle to determine its orientation inside the optical trap. Upconverting particles are optical materials that are able to convert infrared radiation into visible light. Their usefulness has been further boosted by the recent demonstration of their three-dimensional control and tracking by single beam infrared optical traps. In this work it is demonstrated that optical torques are responsible of the stable orientation of the upconverting particle inside the trap. Moreover, numerical calculations and experimental data allowed to use the rotation dynamics of the optically trapped upconverting particle for environmental sensing. Precise knowledge and control over the orientation of individual upconverting particles is extremely important for full exploiting their capabilities as multifunctional bioprobes for interdisciplinary applications. In this work, we report on how time-resolved, single particle polarized spectroscopy can be used to determine the orientation dynamics of a single upconverting particle when entering into an optical trap. Experimental results have unequivocally evidenced the existence of a unique stable configuration. Numerical simulations and simple numerical calculations have demonstrated that the dipole magnetic interactions between the upconverting particle and trapping radiation are the main mechanisms responsible of the optical torques that drive the upconverting particle to its stable orientation. Finally, how a proper analysis of the rotation dynamics of a single upconverting particle within an optical trap can provide valuable information about the properties of the medium in which it is suspended is demonstrated. A proof of concept is given in which the laser driven intracellular rotation of upconverting particles is used to successfully determine the intracellular dynamic viscosity by a passive and an active method.

We have performed a systematic study of magnetoplasmonic Au/Co/Au nanorods with different long/short axes ratio arranged in a disordered fashion but with the same spatial orientation of their axes. We show that the magneto-optical response can be tuned from the visible to the near-infrared range by changing the long/short axes ratio. Moreover, the analysis of the magnetic field induced polarization conversion indicates a different behavior for the far field and for the near field. In particular, the far-field polarization conversion of the nanorod does not depend on the incident polarization, whereas the near field does. Dissertação para obtenção do grau de Mestre no Instituto Superior de Ciências da Saúde Egas Moniz According to the World Health Organization, Human Immunodeficiency Virus, Hepatitis B virus and Hepatitis C virus are one of the most common causes of chronic viral related disease. The Paraoxonase-1enzyme is a calcium-dependent enzyme associated to high density lipoprotein, with various activities, including paraxaonase, arylesterase and lactonase. This ability to hydrolase various subtracts seems to give the enzyme antioxidant properties and sensibility to oxidative stress. This review cross references the information of most of the recent and available studies done in the area and tries to demonstrate the connections and the importance of the Paraoxonase-1 enzyme that could provide invaluable clinical information. Several studies conclude that significant alterations occur on the enzymatic activity of Paraoxonase-1 in Human Immunodeficiency Virus, Hepatitis B virus and Hepatitis C virus infected patients. This modifications seem to occur due to the increased levels caused by the infections on the organism, leading to multiple disruption on antioxidant and anti-inflammatory pathways that were demonstrated to involve Paraoxonase-1. Although Paraoxonase-1 activity alterations seem to be caused by malignant causes, positive and useful clinical information might be extracted by measuring such alterations. Paraoxonase-1 possibly will be used with more research in future as a biomarker for some viral infections. De acordo com a Organização Mundial da Saúde, o Vírus da Imunodeficiência Humana, o vírus da Hepatite B e o vírus da Hepatite C são uma das causas mais comuns de doença crónica com origem viral em todo o mundo. A enzima Paraoxonase-1 é uma enzima dependente do cálcio associada às lipoproteínas de alta densidade, com várias atividades, incluindo paraxaonase, arilesterase e lactonase. A capacidade de hidrolisar vários substratos parece dar à enzima propriedades antioxidantes e sensibilidade ao estresse oxidativo. Este trabalho faz uma revisão dos estudos mais recentes e relevantes na área e tenta demonstrar as interligações e importância da enzima Paraoxonase-1, que pode fornecer informações clínicas significativas. Vários estudos apontam para alterações significativas que ocorrem na atividade enzimática da Paraxonase-1 em pacientes infetados com vírus da Imunodeficiência Humana, vírus da Hepatite B e vírus da Hepatite C. Estas modificações parecem ocorrer devido as alterações das atividades da enzima causados pelas infeções no organismo, conduzindo a várias perturbações nas vias anti-oxidantes e anti-inflamatórias, que parecem envolver a Paraoxonase-1. Sendo as alterações na atividade da Paraoxonase-1 aparentemente motivadas por causas malignas, podem ser retiradas informações clínicas úteis através da avaliação de tais alterações. A enzima Paraoxonase-1 possivelmente poderá ser usada, com mais pesquisas no futuro, como biomarcador para as infeções virais.

Dissertação de mestrado em Bioquímica Aplicada (área de especialização em Bioquímica Molecular e Analítica), Formally recognized approximately 40 years ago, Archaea is still the least studied of the three domains of life. Euryarchaeota and Crenarchaeota are the two major phyla of Archaea, and the most well understood, particularly because of the existence of genetic techniques that allow for their study. An important crenarchaeal model organism is Sulfolobus acidocaldarius, a motile aerobic thermoacidophile first isolated from terrestrial volcanic environments that thrives at around 75°C and pH 3. The archaellum – an organelle functionally similar to the bacterial flagellum, but structurally and genetically different – is responsible for the locomotion of motile archaeal species. In recent years it has been found that the expression of this organelle depends on environmental factors, and starvation in particular is associated with archaella induction in S. acidocaldarius. The signal transduction of nutrient depletion to archaella expression is not fully understood, but recently some key players of the archaellum regulatory network have been uncovered. Specifically, ArnA and ArnB were found to be negative regulators of archaella expression. Moreover, both proteins were found to be phosphorylated, which points at the existence of a multi-level regulatory system. Saci_1563 is a protein conserved in several Crenarchaeota species that was found to be co-purified with ArnA. This protein is a putative GTP-binding protein, a class of proteins implicated in the regulation of several biological phenomena and in cell signalling. It is thus plausible that Saci_1563, by acting as a molecular switch, is implicated in the fine tuning of archaella expression in response to specific signals. In this study we assessed the biological role of Saci_1563 and its biochemical characterization. Protocols for the heterologous purification of this protein in Escherichia coli and for the purification of over-expressed protein in S. acidocaldarius were optimised. The purified protein was then subject to phosphate release assays to test for its GTP-binding ability. The impact of saci_1563 deletion on S. acidocaldarius motility was tested, and the influence of starvation on saci_1563 expression was determined. Moreover, we analysed the effect of saci_1563 deletion on the expression of proteins belonging to the archaellum regulatory network and to the archaellum operon. The results reported in this thesis are far from conclusive. A role for Saci_1563 in archaella regulation cannot be excluded, but other venues of research regarding this protein are suggested., Reconhecido formalmente há cerca de 40 anos o domínio Arqueia é, dos três domínios da vida, o menos estudado. Os filos Euryarchaeota e Crenarchaeota compreendem os organismos melhor caracterizados deste domínio e, no filo Crenarchaeota, o termoacidófilo Sulfolobus acidocaldarius é um dos organismos modelo que tem permitido mais desenvolvimentos nesta área da microbiologia. Este organismo móvel e aeróbico tem por habitat ambientes terrestres vulcânicos e por condições ótimas temperaturas de cerca de 75°C e pH 3. O arcaelo – um apêndice funcionalmente semelhante ao flagelo bacteriano, mas estrutural e geneticamente distinto – é responsável pela locomoção arqueana. Atualmente sabe-se que certos fatores ambientais estimulam a expressão do arcaelo. Em S. acidocaldarius, em particular, condições de subnutrição levam à expressão do arcaelo. Algumas proteínas envolvidas na rede regulatória do arcaelo já se encontram identificadas. Duas dessas proteínas – ArnA e ArnB – reprimem a sua expressão. As propriedades de ambas as proteínas podem ser alteradas por fosforilação, o que indica que a regulação do arcaelo ocorre a vários níveis hierárquicos. A proteína Saci_1563, anotada como uma GTPase, encontra-se conservada em várias espécies pertencentes ao filo Crenarchaeota e foi detetada após a sua co-purificação com ArnA. Dado o papel das GTPases na regulação de diversos processos celulares, é plausível que esta proteína de alguma forma module ArnA e, consequentemente, a expressão do próprio arcaelo. De modo a caracterizar bioquimicamente esta proteína otimizaram-se protocolos para a sua purificação a partir de Escherichia coli e de S. acidocaldarius. As amostras obtidas foram utilizadas para avaliar a capacidade de hidrólise de GTP desta proteína. A influência da ausência de nutrientes no meio na expressão de saci_1563 foi estudada numa estirpe de S. acidocaldarius. Uma estirpe mutante que não possui o gene para Saci_1563 foi também utilizada de modo a determinar de que modo a ausência desta proteína influencia a expressão de outras proteínas associadas ao arcaelo ou à regulação da sua expressão. O efeito da ausência de Saci_1563 na locomoção de S. acidocaldarius foi também determinado. Os resultados aqui apresentados não são de modo algum definitivos. Apesar de não ter sido possível atribuír um papel a Saci_1563 no que toca à regulação do arcaelo, não é também possível excluir completamente um papel regulatório por parte desta proteína. Por este motivo, no final sugerem-se vias de investigação alternativas para compreender esta biomolécula.

Dissertação apresentada à Universidade Fernando Pessoa como parte dos requisitos para a obtenção do grau de Mestre em Ciência Política e Relações Internacionais Esta dissertação foca-se na cidadania política, migrações e direitos políticos dos migrantes. Inicialmente aborda o conceito de cidadania, enquadrando-o do ponto de vista histórico, jurídico e sociológico, quer em Portugal quer na União Europeia (UE). De seguida, examina-se a participação dos estrangeiros (intra e extracomunitários) em atos eleitorais na UE. Por fim, é analisado o impacto das migrações na sociedade, abordando temas como o acolhimento, integração, posicionamento dos partidos políticos, mediatização de fenómenos de instabilidade social, importância para a sustentabilidade do Estado Providência, combate à imigração ilegal e também um breve estudo de caso sobre a política de imigração em França como modelo legislativo e de integração na UE. This dissertation focuses on the political citizenship status, migration, migrants and their political rights. At first I address the concept of citizenship, framing it in historical, legal and sociological points of view, both in Portugal and in European Union (EU). Next I look at foreign (intra and extra-EU) participation in electoral acts in the EU. Finally, I analyze the impact of migration on the society, covering topics such as social instability, its importance for the sustainability of the welfare state, the fight against illegal immigration and a brief study case on immigration policy in France (as a legislative model of integration within the EU).

A Universidade de Évora aprovou, em 2013, o Mestrado em Ecologia da Paisagem, o 1º em Portugal, cuja 1ª edição vai ter lugar no próximo ao letivo. A presente conferência tem como objetivo dar a conhecer e divulgar o referido mestrado aos potenciais interessados, trazendo para o diálogo os desafios que atualmente se colocam em Ecologia da Paisagem, nomeadamente os sociais e ambientais, num contexto transdisciplinar que lhe é inerente. Serão abordados temas dentro de um vasto leque de realidades, questões e escalas de análise, desde o ensino à investigação e à sua aplicação prática, para o que se convidaram especialistas e investigadores de diferentes países, com diferentes competências e formações. Pretende-se identificar as questões mais atuais e os desafios a considerar no futuro, articulando ensino e investigação e equacionado de que forma a Ecologia da Paisagem contribui para dar resposta às rápidas transformações e dinâmicas territoriais e ambientais. Mestrado em Engenharia de Computadores e Telemática The use of multiple computing devices per person is increasing more and more. Nowadays is normal that mobile devices like smartphones, tablets and laptops are present in the everyday life of a single person and in many cases people use these devices to perform important operations related with their professional life. This also presents a problem, as these devices come with the user in everyday life and the fact that often they have a high monetary value means that these devices are susceptible to theft. This thesis introduces a computer locking system that distinguishes itself from existing similar systems because (i) it is designed to work independently of the Operating System(s) installed on the laptop or mobile device, (ii) depends on a firrmware driver that implements the lock operation making it resistant to storage device formats or any other attack that uses software operations. It is also explored the operation of a device that has a firrmware that follows the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) specification as well as the development of drivers for this type of firrmware. It was also developed a security protocol and various cryptographic techniques where explored and implemented. O uso de vários dispositivos computacionais por pessoa está a aumentar cada vez mais. Hoje em dia é normal dispositivos móveis como o smartphone, tablet e computador portátil estarem presentes no quotidiano das pessoas e em muitos casos as pessoas necessitam de realizar tarefas na sua vida profissional nestes dispositivos. Isto apresenta também um problema, como estes dispositivos acompanham o utilizador no dia a dia e pelo facto de muitas vezes terem um valor monetário elevado faz com que estes dispositivos sejam suscetíveis a roubos. Esta tese introduz um sistema de bloqueio de computadores que se distingue dos sistemas similares existentes porque, (i) _e desenhado para funcionar independentemente do(s) sistema(s) operativo(s) instalado(s) no computador portátil ou no dispositivo móvel, (ii) depende de um driver do firrmware que concretiza a operação de bloqueio fazendo com que seja resistente contra formatação do dispositivo de armazenamento ou qualquer outro ataque que tenho por base a utilização de software. É explorado então o funcionamento de um dispositivo que tenha um firmware que respeita a especificação Unfied Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) assim como a programação de drivers para este tipo de firmware. Foi também desenvolvido um protocolo de segurança e são exploradas várias técnicas criptográficas passiveis de serem implementadas.

Dissertação de Mestrado em Estudos Portugueses Interdisciplinares apresentada à Universidade Aberta A viagem de Machim e o consequente descobrimento da Madeira é um episódio que não pode ser excluído da história desta Ilha, nem da história dos Descobrimentos Portugueses. À parte de tudo aquilo que se tem escrito sobre este jovem inglês e a sua amada, Ana de Arfet, cada vez que nos debruçamos sobre este assunto apercebemo-nos de que muito ainda pode ser feito e muito ainda nos esconde a obscuridade dos documentos que desconhecemos. Chamando até nós os textos que veiculam a lenda de Machim, mostrando as particularidades de cada um, esclarecemos algumas questões relacionadas com este assunto, nomeadamente as diferentes abordagens que desta lenda têm sido feitas, donde resultam diferentes versões. Em cada um dos escritos encontramos elementos, aqui interpretados como topoi literários, que são apresentados quase sempre pela mesma ordem e que conferem uma consistência suficiente para podermos dizer que a lenda de Machim se baseia num episódio com conteúdo e com expressão independentes. De entre eles temos, por exemplo, a fuga de barco, a navegação à deriva, a tempestade, a beleza natural da Ilha da Madeira, a morte de Ana de Arfet e de Machim, entre outros. Reportando os géneros distintos, as diferentes versões, regra geral, tendem a dar um maior relevo à situação de desterro do jovem casal na Ilha da Madeira, e consequente morte por amor, do que propriamente ao elemento descoberta, com a posse da terra a ser legada para segundo plano. Ainda assim, é indiscutível a ligação desta lenda à formação da identidade insular madeirense, com o consequente enriquecimento do seu imaginário, ganhando Machim traços de um herói fundador e o seu episódio os contornos de uma narrativa fundacional. Machim’s trip and the subsequent discovery of Madeira Island is a legendary episode that can not be excluded from the history of this island and should be considered in the context of the Portuguese Discoveries. Much has been written about this Englishman and his much-loved Ana de Arfet. But, each time one studies this subject, one realises that much more can be said about it, namely if documents unknown to us are to be considered. When we read the texts that convey Machim’s legend, we are struck by their singularity. Therefore we have tried to elucidate some questions related to this subject, namely in the field of the different interpretations of the legend and its different versions. Each text contain elements – literary topoi – presented almost in the same order that provide enough consistency to say that this legend is an independent episode, both in content and expression. These topoi are mainly the following: the boat trip as an evasion, some days of drift navigation, the storm, the natural beauty of the Madeira Island; Ana de Arfet and Machim’s death. The story has been used as subject by texts of different literary genres and with diverse finalities. Most texts normally give more importance to the young couple’s exile trip to Madeira Island and to the subsequent death of the lovers, than to the discovery and possession of the land. Even so, it is beyond question the connection of this legend to the formation of the identity of Madeira Island’s people and of their imaginary. Machim is thus transformed into a founder hero and his story becomes a founding legend.

O movimento da pupila é a resposta à variação da intensidade da luz na retina, com vista a ajudar a optimizar a percepção visual. Num ambiente de luz fraca a dilatação da pupila (midríase) é um meio eficaz para maximizar o número de fotões que chega à retina, que por sua vez activa os processos de adaptação à pouca luz. Aquando da exposição a uma luz forte, a contracção da pupila (miose) permite a redução da intensidade da luz na retina numa proporção eficaz, servindo como resposta rápida dos mecanismos de adaptação à luz intensa (1). O estudo da abertura da pupila tem interesse clínico relevante, pois esta actua como um indicador objectivo da sensibilidade da retina à luz e, por consequência, do nervo óptico. A sua oscilação permanente é resultado do equilíbrio entre fluxos opostos dos sistemas nervosos simpático e parassimpático. O estado da pupila de um indivíduo permite o diagnóstico de várias doenças, entre as quais distúrbios do sono (narcolepsia), esquizofrenia (reacção a fármacos), Síndrome de Adie, Alzheimer, dependência de narcóticos, entre outras. Neste trabalho apresenta-se um equipamento óptico estável e robusto para a detecção da área da pupila e sua variação numa escala temporal. Desenvolveu-se um algoritmo de detecção do contorno pupilar, implementado num programa de interface simples, intuitivo e user friendly. Com vista à validação técnica do sistema desenvolvido foram feitas medições da área, perímetro, diâmetro horizontal e diâmetro vertical que, após estudo estatístico e comparativo, permitiram tirar conclusões acerca das dimensões gerais da pupila, da sua variação dado um determinado estímulo e da viabilidade clínica do equipamento concebido.

Este estudo tem como objetivo o desenvolvimento de metodologias para produção de cartografia de avaliação da erosão do solo adequada à uma utilização operacional no contexto da gestão florestal, através de um Sistema de Informação Geográfica (SIG). Foram testados dois modelos na determinação da erosão hídrica potencial, escolhidos pela sua aplicabilidade teórica: uma adaptação da Equação Universal de Perda de Solo (USLE) (Wischmeier & Smith, 1965; 1978) e o índice de Erosão Hídrica Estrutural (EHE) (Ferreira et al., 2010; Neves et al., 2011). Estes modelos foram aplicados a uma área florestal, parte de uma propriedade próxima da vila de Azambuja, no distrito de Lisboa. Para uma validação qualitativa dos resultados de modelação, foi realizado um levantamento cartográfico da erosão observada nesta área. Numa perspetiva operacional, ambos os modelos demonstraram uma eficácia razoável na descrição da realidade observada na área estudada. O modelo adaptado da USLE alcançou melhores resultados gerais, enquanto os níveis de confiança na cartografia do índice EHE aumentaram com o grau de erosão, possibilitando melhores resultados nas classes de maior suscetibilidade de erosão; Abstract: Assessment of soil water erosion potential on scale of forest intervention unit using a Geographic Information System This study aims the development of methodologies for the production of maps directed towards the assessment of soil erosion suitable to a forestry management operational use, using a Geographic Information System (GIS). Two models were tested to evaluate the water erosion potential, selected for their theoretical applicability: an adaptation of Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) (Wischmeier & Smith, 1965; 1978) and the Structural Water Erosion index (EHE) (Ferreira et al., 2010; Neves et al., 2011). These models were applied in a forest area, part of a property close to Azambuja village, in Lisbon district. For qualitative validation of the modeling results, a cartographic survey of observed erosion in this area was produced. From an operational point of view, both models show a reasonable efficacy to describe the situation found in the studied area. The adapted USLE model achieved better general results, while the levels of confidence in the EHE index mapping increasing with the degree of erosion, allowing better results in high erosion susceptibility classes.

A presente dissertação intitulada “Modelação geográfica em processos de caracterização e avaliação da paisagem numa perspectiva transfronteiriça” tem como objectivo o desenvolvimento de metodologias e abordagens na análise da estrutura da paisagem e da sua relação com as funções ecológicas da paisagem. Explora-se o detalhe cartográfico e temático da cartografia de ocupação e uso do solo resultante da aplicação da legenda hierárquica Corine Land Cover (CLC) Nível 5 (Guiomar et al. 2009, Batista 2011), e a cartografia CLC2006, para a definição de unidades locais e regionais de paisagem. Analisa-se o comportamento das métricas de paisagem nos seus diferentes níveis de organização hierárquica: CLC N2, CLC N3, CLC N4 e CLC N5 e testam-se métodos para a utilização de métricas como classificadores de unidades de paisagem, nomeadamente testando o seu comportamento na cartografia de ocupação e uso do solo e das unidades locais e regionais de paisagem. Propõe-se a integração da componente tridimensional no cálculo das métricas de paisagem e ensaia-se a relação entre as métricas de paisagem e funções da paisagem. É também apresentado um conjunto de ensaios em torno da consistência das métricas de paisagem aplicadas em paisagens reais no Alentejo Central e zona transfronteiriça Alentejo, Centro (Portugal) e Extremadura (Espanha). Dos resultados obtidos ressaltam as vantagens das novas abordagens na avaliação das características estruturais e funcionais da paisagem independentemente da área e escala de observação; ABSTRACT: This thesis entitled "Geographical modelling for characterization and assessment of landscape in a crossborder perspective" aims to develop methodologies and approaches to analyse landscape structure and its relation to landscape ecological functions. It explores the cartographic and thematic detail of the land cover and land use maps resulting from the Corine Land Cover Level 5 (Guiomar et al. 2009, Batista 2011) and the CLC2006 maps, for the definition of local and regional landscape units (LLUs). It is analysed the behavior of landscape metrics at different thematic scales of CLC maps: CLC N2, CLC N3, CLC N4 and CLC N5 and methods for using metrics as landscape unit’s classifiers are developed, namely by testing the behavior of landscape metrics with land use and LLU maps. It is proposed to include the 3D component in landscape metrics calculation and it is tested the relations between landscape metrics and landscape functions. Several tests conducted in order to evaluate the consistency of landscape metrics applied to real landscapes in Central Alentejo and in the border area of Alentejo and Extremadura (Spain) are presented. The main results showed the advantages of the new methodology for evaluating landscape structural and functional characteristics, independently of the observation area or scale.
