In this study, we meticulously construct a 3-form Lagrangian designed to mimic the dynamics of both dust matter in the past and dark energy driving the acceleration in the present era. A dynamical systems approach is used to investigate the underlying behavior of the cosmological background. By investigating the influence of the potential slope and initial conditions on the dynamical solutions, we identify distinct viable scenarios capable of replicating a De Sitter universe in the present epoch. Chemical evolution models predict a gradual build-up of $^{13}$C in the universe, based on empirical nuclear reaction rates and assumptions on the properties of stellar populations. However, old metal-poor stars within the Galaxy contain more $^{13}$C than is predicted, suggesting that further refinements to the models are necessary. Gas at high redshift provides important supplementary information at metallicities $-2\lesssim$ [Fe/H] $\lesssim-1$, for which there are only a few measurements in the Galaxy. We obtained new, high-quality, VLT/ESPRESSO observations of the QSO B1331+170 and used them to measure $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C in the damped Lyman-$\alpha$ system (DLA) at $z_{abs}=1.776$, with [Fe/H]=-1.27. AI-VPFIT, an Artificial Intelligence tool based on genetic algorithms and guided by a spectroscopic information criterion, was used to explore different possible kinematic structures of the carbon gas. Three hundred independent AI-VPFIT models of the absorption system were produced using pre-set $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C values, ranging from 4 to 500. Our results show that $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C$=28.5^{+51.5}_{-10.4}$, suggesting a possibility of $^{13}$C production at low metallicity., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures. Three appendices. We propose a new model of scalar field dark matter interacting with dark energy. Adopting a fluid description of the dark matter field in the regime of rapid oscillations, we find that the equation of state for dark matter is non-zero and even becomes increasingly negative at late times during dark energy domination. Furthermore, the speed of sound of dark matter is non-vanishing at all length scales, and a non-adiabatic pressure contribution arises. The results indicate that there are still unexplored possible interactions within the dark sector that lead to novel background effects and can impact structure formation processes., Comment: 20 pages, 3 figures

Primordial abundances of light elements are sensitive to the physics of the early Universe and can directly constrain cosmological quantities, such as the baryon-to-photon ratio $\eta_{10}$, the baryon density and the number of neutrino families. Deuterium is especially suited for these studies: its primordial abundance is sensitive and monotonically dependent on $\eta_{10}$, allowing an independent measurement of the cosmic baryon density that can be compared, for instance, against the Planck satellite data. The primordial deuterium abundance can be measured in high $H_I$ column density absorption systems towards distant quasars. We report here a new measurement, based on high-resolution ESPRESSO data, of the primordial $D_I$ abundance of a system at redshift $z \sim 3.572$, towards PKS1937-101. Using only ESPRESSO data, we find a D/H ratio of $2.638\pm0.128 \times 10^{-5}$, while including the available UVES data improves the precision, leading to a ratio of $2.608 \pm 0.102 \times 10^{-5}$. The results of this analysis agree with those of the most precise existing measurements. We find that the relatively low column density of this system ($\log{N_{\rm H_I}/ {\rm cm}^{-2}}\sim18 $) introduces modelling uncertainties, which become the main contributor to the error budget., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 16 pages, 10 figures and 6 tables (4 in main text, 2 in Appendix). The gravitationally lensed quasar J014516.6-094517 at z=2.719 has been observed with the ESPRESSO instrument at the ESO VLT to obtain high-fidelity spectra of the two images A and B with a resolving power R=70000. At the redshifts under investigation (2.1 < z < 2.7), the Lyman forests along the two sightlines are separated by sub-kiloparsec physical distances and exhibit a strong correlation. We find that the two forests are indistinguishable at the present level of signal-to-noise ratio and do not show any global velocity shift, with the cross-correlation peaking at $\Delta v = 12 \pm 48$ m/s. The distribution of the difference in velocity of individual Lyman-$\alpha$ features is compatible with a null average and a mean absolute deviation of 930 m/s. Significant differences in NHI column density are not detected, putting a limit to the RMS fluctuation in the baryon density on $\leq 1$ proper kpc scales of $\Delta \rho / \rho < 3$%. On the other hand, metal lines show significant differences both in velocity structure and in column density. A toy model shows that the difference in velocity of the metal features between the two sightlines is compatible with the the motions of the baryonic component associated to dark matter halos of typical mass $M\simeq 2\times 10^{10} M_\odot$, also compatible with the observed incidence of the metal systems. The present observations confirm the feasibility of the Sandage test of the cosmic redshift drift with high-fidelity spectroscopy of the Lyman forest of distant, bright quasars, but also provide an element of caution about the intrinsic noise associated to the usage of metal features for the same purpose., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We show that a mass-varying neutrino model driven by scalar field dark energy relaxes the existing upper bound on the current neutrino mass to ${\sum m_\nu < 0.72}$ eV. We extend the standard $\Lambda$ cold dark matter model by introducing two parameters: the rate of change of the scalar field with the number of $e$-folds and the coupling between neutrinos and the field. We investigate how they affect the matter power spectrum, the cosmic microwave background anisotropies and its lensing potential. The model is tested against Planck observations of temperature, polarization, and lensing, combined with baryon acoustic oscillation measurements that constrain the background evolution. The results indicate that small couplings favor a cosmological constant, while larger couplings favor a dynamical dark energy, weakening the upper bound on current neutrino masses., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures. The Universe's assumed homogeneity and isotropy is known as the cosmological principle. It is one of the assumptions that lead to the Friedmann-Lema\^{\i}tre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) metric and it is a cornerstone of modern cosmology, because the metric plays a crucial role into the determination of the cosmological observables. Thus, it is of paramount importance to question this principle and perform observational tests that may falsify this hypothesis. Here we explore the use of galaxy cluster counts as a probe of a large-scale inhomogeneity, which is a novel approach for the study of inhomogeneous models, and to determine the precision with which future galaxy cluster surveys will be able to test the cosmological principle. We present forecast constraints on the inhomogeneous Lema\^{\i}tre-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) model with a cosmological constant and cold dark matter, from a combination of simulated data according to a compilation of `Stage-IV' galaxy surveys following a methodology that involves the use of a mass function correction from numerical $N$-body simulations of an LTB cosmology. When considering the \lcdm fiducial model as a baseline for constructing our mock catalogs, we find that our combination of the forthcoming cluster surveys, will improve the constraints on the cosmological principle parameters as well on the FLRW parameters by about $50\%$ with respect to previous similar forecasts performed using geometrical and linear growth of structure probes, with $\pm20\%$ variations depending on the level of knowledge of systematic effects.These results indicate that galaxy cluster abundances are sensitive probes of inhomogeneity, and that next-generation galaxy cluster surveys, will thoroughly test homogeneity at cosmological scales, tightening the constraints on possible violations of the cosmological principle in the framework of $\Lambda$LTB scenarios. We study a model of Symmetric Teleparallel gravity that is able to account for the current accelerated expansion of the universe without the need for dark energy component. We investigate this model by making use of dynamical system analysis techniques to identify the regions of the parameter space with viable cosmologies and constrain it using type Ia supernova (SnIa), cosmic microwave background (CMB) data and make forecasts using standard siren (SS) events. In this work we analyze the full linear behaviour of the constrained interacting dark energy (CIDER) model, which is a conformally coupled quintessence model tailored to mimic a $\Lambda$CDM expansion. We compute the matter and temperature anisotropies power spectra and test the model against recent observational data. We shed light on some particular subtleties of the background behaviour that were not fully captured in previous works, and study the physics of the linear cosmological observables. One novelty found was that matter perturbations are enhanced at large scales when compared with the ones of the standard $\Lambda$CDM. The reason and impact of this trend on the cosmological observables and on the physics of the early Universe are considered. The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) has the potential to reveal wonders about the fundamental theory of nature at play in the extreme gravity regime, where the gravitational interaction is both strong and dynamical. In this white paper, the Fundamental Physics Working Group of the LISA Consortium summarizes the current topics in fundamental physics where LISA observations of GWs can be expected to provide key input. We provide the briefest of reviews to then delineate avenues for future research directions and to discuss connections between this working group, other working groups and the consortium work package teams. The spectrograph ESPRESSO recently obtained a limit on the variation of the fine-structure constant, $\alpha$, through measurements along the line of sight of a bright quasar with a precision of $1.36$ ppm at $1\sigma$ level. This imposes new constraints on cosmological models with a varying $\alpha$. We assume such a model where the electromagnetic sector is coupled to a scalar field dark energy responsible for the current acceleration of the Universe. We parametrise the variation of $\alpha$ with two extra parameters, one defining the cosmological evolution of the quintessence component and the other fixing the coupling with the electromagnetic field. The objective of this work is to constrain these parameters with both astrophysical and local probes. We also carried out a comparative analysis of how each data probe may constrain our parametrisation. We performed a Bayesian analysis by comparing the predictions of the model with observations. The astrophysical datasets are composed of quasar spectra measurements, including the latest ESPRESSO data point, as well as Planck observations of the cosmic microwave background. We combined these with local results from atomic clocks and the MICROSCOPE experiment. The constraints placed on the quintessence parameter are consistent with a null variation of the field, and are therefore compatible with a $\Lambda$CDM cosmology. The constraints on the coupling to the electromagnetic sector are dominated by the E\"otv\"os parameter local bound. More precise measurements with ESPRESSO will be extremely important to study the cosmological evolution of $\alpha$ as it probes an interval of redshift not accessible to other types of observations. We propose a phenomenological generalisation of the standard model with only one extra degree of freedom that parametrises the evolution of a scalar field responsible for the cosmic acceleration. The model also foresees an additional parameter in the form of a coupling between dark energy and dark matter. This model captures a large diversity of dark energy evolutions at low redshift and could usefully complement common CPL parametrisations widely used. Forecast constraints for a Symmetric Teleparallel Gravity model with a $\Lambda$CDM background are made using forthcoming ground and space based gravitational waves observatories. A Bayesian analysis resorting to generated mock catalogs shows that LIGO is not expected to be able to distinguish this model from $\Lambda$CDM, while both LISA and the ET will, with the ET outperforming LISA. The strong intervening absorption system at redshift 1.15 towards the very bright quasar HE 0515$-$4414 is the most studied absorber for measuring possible cosmological variations in the fine-structure constant, $\alpha$. We observed HE 0515$-$4414 for 16.1$\,$h with the Very Large Telescope and present here the first constraint on relative variations in $\alpha$ with parts-per-million (ppm) precision from the new ESPRESSO spectrograph: $\Delta\alpha/\alpha = 1.3 \pm 1.3_{\rm stat} \pm 0.4_{\rm sys}\,{\rm ppm}$. The statistical uncertainty (1$\sigma$) is similar to the ensemble precision of previous large samples of absorbers, and derives from the high S/N achieved ($\approx$105 per 0.4$\,$km$\,$s$^{-1}$ pixel). ESPRESSO's design, and calibration of our observations with its laser frequency comb, effectively removed wavelength calibration errors from our measurement. The high resolving power of our ESPRESSO spectrum ($R=145000$) enabled the identification of very narrow components within the absorption profile, allowing a more robust analysis of $\Delta\alpha/\alpha$. The evidence for the narrow components is corroborated by their correspondence with previously detected molecular hydrogen and neutral carbon. The main remaining systematic errors arise from ambiguities in the absorption profile modelling, effects from redispersing the individual quasar exposures, and convergence of the parameter estimation algorithm. All analyses of the spectrum, including systematic error estimates, were initially blinded to avoid human biases. We make our reduced ESPRESSO spectrum of HE 0515$-$4414 publicly available for further analysis. Combining our ESPRESSO result with 28 measurements, from other spectrographs, in which wavelength calibration errors have been mitigated, yields a weighted mean $\Delta\alpha/\alpha = -0.5 \pm 0.5_{\rm stat} \pm 0.4_{\rm sys}\,$ppm at redshifts 0.6-2.4., Comment: Accepted by A&A. We study a quintessence model for which the scalar field is disformally coupled to dark matter. The background mimics the LCDM cosmological evolution and the quintessence potential is not specified. A disformal effect due to the quintessential mass is seen in the growth rate of the cosmological structure on large scales. The disformal parameter renders no appreciable effect on the evolution of the total matter perturbation. As an alternative to the popular parametrisations of the dark energy equation of state, we construct a quintessence model where the scalar field has a linear dependence on the number of e-folds. Constraints on more complex models are typically limited by the degeneracies that increase with the number of parameters. The proposed parametrisation conveniently constrains the evolution of the dark energy equation of state as it allows for a wide variety of time evolutions. We also consider a non-minimal coupling to cold dark matter. We fit the model with Planck and KiDS observational data. The CMB favours a non-vanishing coupling with energy transfer from dark energy to dark matter. Conversely, gravitational weak lensing measurements slightly favour energy transfer from dark matter to dark energy, with a substantial departure of the dark energy equation of state from -1., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures

Observations of metal absorption systems in the spectra of distant quasars allow to constrain a possible variation of the fine-structure constant throughout the history of the Universe. Such a test poses utmost demands on the wavelength accuracy and previous studies were limited by systematics in the spectrograph wavelength calibration. A substantial advance in the field is therefore expected from the new ultra-stable high-resolution spectrograph Espresso, recently installed at the VLT. In preparation of the fundamental physics related part of the Espresso GTO program, we present a thorough assessment of the Espresso wavelength accuracy and identify possible systematics at each of the different steps involved in the wavelength calibration process. Most importantly, we compare the default wavelength solution, based on the combination of Thorium-Argon arc lamp spectra and a Fabry-P\'erot interferometer, to the fully independent calibration obtained from a laser frequency comb. We find wavelength-dependent discrepancies of up to 24m/s. This substantially exceeds the photon noise and highlights the presence of different sources of systematics, which we characterize in detail as part of this study. Nevertheless, our study demonstrates the outstanding accuracy of Espresso with respect to previously used spectrographs and we show that constraints of a relative change of the fine-structure constant at the $10^{-6}$ level can be obtained with Espresso without being limited by wavelength calibration systematics., Comment: 27 pages, accepted for publication in A&A

The coupled quintessence model with disformal couplings is treated here to mimic the $\Lambda$CDM background. Using this approach, the quintessence potential does not have to be specified. The model considers a generic fluid coupled to the quintessence, which is specified to be either dark matter or a relativistic fluid. The background consists of a cosmological constant and another uncoupled generic fluid, to cater for three studied scenarios. The cosmological dynamics is investigated for the coupled quintessence model, whose disformal couplings depend on the equation of state of both generic fluids. The scenario, whereby both generic fluids are dark matter, was further analyzed for an expansion history of the mimicking model. A Bayesian statistical analysis using redshift space distortions data is performed to test a model of Symmetric Teleparallel Gravity where gravity is non-metrical. The cosmological background mimics a $\Lambda$CDM evolution but differences arise in the perturbations. The linear matter fluctuations are numerically evolved and the study of the growth rate of structures is analysed in this cosmological setting. In this work we consider a cosmological model in which dark energy is portrayed by a canonical scalar field which is allowed to couple to the other species by means of a disformal transformation of the metric. We revisit the current literature by assuming that the disformal function in the metric transformation can depend both on the scalar field itself and on its derivatives, encapsulating a wide variety of scalar-tensor theories. This generalisation also leads to new and richer phenomenology, explaining some of the features found in previously studied models. We present the background equations and perform a detailed dynamical analysis, from where new disformal fixed points emerge, that translate into novel cosmological features. These include early scaling regimes between the coupled species and broader stability parameter regions. In this work we study the growth of cold dark matter density perturbations in the nonlinear regime on a conformally coupled quintessence model in which the background is designed to mimic a $\Lambda$CDM cosmology. The spherical collapse of overdense regions is analyzed. We highlight the role of the coupling on the overall dynamics, trace the evolution of the density contrast throughout the cosmic history and compute perturbative parameters such as the critical density contrast. We find that the coupling has the influence of delaying the collapse due to the slower growth of matter perturbations. We follow to compute the cluster number counts using the Press-Schechter and Sheth-Tormen mass functions. In both cases, the transfer of energy between the dark energy field and dark matter suppresses the number of objects at low redshifts and enhances the number at high redshifts. In this work, we seek a cosmological mechanism that may define the sign of the effective gravitational coupling constant, {\em G}. To this end, we consider general scalar-tensor gravity theories as they provide the field theory natural framework for the variation of the gravitational coupling. We find that models with a quadratic potential naturally stabilize the value of {\em G} into the positive branch of the evolution and further, that de Sitter inflation and a relaxation to General Relativity is easily attained., Comment: 16 pages, 16 figures

We present and study a conformally coupled dark energy model, characterised by an interaction between a tachyon field $\phi$, with an inverse square potential $V (\phi)$, and the matter sector. A detailed analysis of the cosmological outcome reveals different possibilities, in contrast with the previously studied uncoupled model, for which there exists only one stable critical point that gives late-time acceleration of the Universe. The introduction of the coupling translates into an energy exchange between the fluids. We find the interesting possibility of the emergence of a new fixed point, which is a scaling solution and an attractor of the system. In this case, it is possible to describe an everlasting Universe with $\Omega_{\phi} \simeq 0.7$, therefore alleviating the cosmic coincidence problem. In cubic-order Horndeski theories where a scalar field $\phi$ is coupled to nonrelativistic matter with a field-dependent coupling $Q(\phi)$, we derive the most general Lagrangian having scaling solutions on the isotropic and homogenous cosmological background. For constant $Q$ including the case of vanishing coupling, the corresponding Lagrangian reduces to the form $L=Xg_2(Y)-g_3(Y)\square \phi$, where $X=-\partial_{\mu}\phi\partial^{\mu}\phi/2$ and $g_2, g_3$ are arbitrary functions of $Y=Xe^{\lambda \phi}$ with constant $\lambda$. We obtain the fixed points of the scaling Lagrangian for constant $Q$ and show that the $\phi$-matter-dominated-epoch ($\phi$MDE) is present for the cubic coupling $g_3(Y)$ containing inverse power-law functions of $Y$. The stability analysis around the fixed points indicates that the $\phi$MDE can be followed by a stable critical point responsible for the cosmic acceleration. We propose a viable dark energy scenario in the presence of cubic Horndeski interactions and a standard scalar-field kinetic term with two exponential potentials. We show the existence of new scaling solutions along which the cubic coupling $G_3$ provides an important contribution to the field density that scales in the same way as the background fluid density. The solutions finally exit to the epoch of cosmic acceleration driven by a scalar-field dominated fixed point arising from the second exponential potential. We clarify the viable parameter space in which all the theoretically consistent conditions including those for the absence of ghost and Laplacian instabilities are satisfied on scaling and scalar-field dominated critical points. In comparison to Quintessence with the same scalar potential, we find that the cubic coupling gives rise to some novel features: (i) the allowed model parameter space is wider in that a steeper potential can drive the cosmic acceleration; (ii) the dark energy equation of state $w_{\phi}$ today can be closer to $-1$ relative to Quintessence; (iii) even if the density associated with the cubic coupling dominates over the standard field density in the scaling era, the former contribution tends to be suppressed at low redshifts. We also compute quantities associated with the growth of matter perturbations and weak lensing potentials under the quasi-static approximation in the sub-horizon limit and show that the cubic coupling leads to the modified evolution of perturbations which can be distinguished from Quintessence., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, accepted version by PRD

A well-known problem of the $\Lambda$CDM model is the tension between the relatively high level of clustering, as quantified by the parameter $\sigma_8$, found in cosmic microwave background experiments and the smaller one obtained from large-scale observations in the late Universe. In this paper we show that coupled quintessence, i.e. a single dark energy scalar field conformally coupled to dark matter through a constant coupling, can solve this problem if the background is taken to be identical to the $\Lambda$CDM one. We show that two competing effects arise. On one hand, the additional scalar force is attractive, and is therefore expected to increase the clustering. On the other, in order to obtain the same background as $\Lambda$CDM, coupled quintessence must have a smaller amount of dark matter near the present epoch. We show that the second effect is dominating today and leads to an overall slower growth. Comparing to redshift distortion data, we find that coupled quintessence with $\Lambda$CDM background solves the tension between early and late clustering. We find for the coupling $\beta$ and for $\sigma_8$ the best fit values $|\beta| = 0.079^{+ 0.059}_{- 0.067}$ and $\sigma_8 = 0.818^{+0.115}_{-0.088}$. These values also fit the lensing data from the KiDS-450 survey. We also estimate that the future missions SKA and Euclid will constrain $\beta$ with an error of $\pm\, 1.5\times10^{-3}$ and for $\sigma_8$ of $\pm \,1.8\times10^{-3}$ at $1\sigma$ level., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures. We review the most general scalar-tensor cosmological models with up to second-order derivatives in the field equations that have a fixed spatially flat de Sitter critical point independent of the material content or vacuum energy. This subclass of the Horndeski Lagrangian is capable of dynamically adjusting any value of the vacuum energy of the matter fields at the critical point. We present the cosmological evolution of the linear models and the non-linear models with shift symmetry. Screening mechanisms for a three-form field around a dense source such as the Sun are investigated. Working with the dual vector, we can obtain a thin-shell where field interactions are short range. We study the behaviour of linear perturbations in multifield coupled quintessence models. Using gauge invariant linear cosmological perturbation theory we provide the full set of governing equations for this class of models, and solve the system numerically. We apply the numerical code to generate growth functions for various examples, and compare these both to the standard $\Lambda$CDM model and to current and future observational bounds. Finally, we examine the applicability of the "small scale approximation", often used to calculate growth functions in quintessence models, in light of upcoming experiments such as SKA and Euclid. We find the deviation of the full equation results for large k modes from the approximation exceeds the experimental uncertainty for these future surveys. We explore the dynamics and evolution of the Universe at early and late times, focusing on both dark energy and extended gravity models and their astrophysical and cosmological consequences. Modified theories of gravity not only provide an alternative explanation for the recent expansion history of the universe, but they also offer a paradigm fundamentally distinct from the simplest dark energy models of cosmic acceleration. In this review, we perform a detailed theoretical and phenomenological analysis of different modified gravity models and investigate their consistency. We also consider the cosmological implications of well motivated physical models of the early universe with a particular emphasis on inflation and topological defects. Astrophysical and cosmological tests over a wide range of scales, from the solar system to the observable horizon, severely restrict the allowed models of the Universe. In this work, we present a method for implementing the $\delta N$ formalism to study the primordial non-Gaussianity produced in multiple three-form field inflation. Using a dual description relating three-form fields to noncanonical scalar fields, and employing existing results, we produce expressions for the bispectrum of the curvature perturbation in terms of three-form quantities. We study the bispectrum generated in a two three-form field inflationary scenario for a particular potential that for suitable values of the parameters was found in earlier work to give values of the spectral index and ratio of tensor to scalar perturbations compatible with current bounds. We calculate the reduced bispectrum for this model, finding an amplitude in equilateral and orthogonal configurations of ${\cal O}(1)$ and in the squeezed limit of ${\cal O}(10^{-3})$. Euclid is a European Space Agency medium class mission selected for launch in 2020 within the Cosmic Vision 2015 2025 program. The main goal of Euclid is to understand the origin of the accelerated expansion of the universe. Euclid will explore the expansion history of the universe and the evolution of cosmic structures by measuring shapes and redshifts of galaxies as well as the distribution of clusters of galaxies over a large fraction of the sky. Although the main driver for Euclid is the nature of dark energy, Euclid science covers a vast range of topics, from cosmology to galaxy evolution to planetary research. In this review we focus on cosmology and fundamental physics, with a strong emphasis on science beyond the current standard models. We discuss five broad topics: dark energy and modified gravity, dark matter, initial conditions, basic assumptions and questions of methodology in the data analysis. In the search for an explanation for the current acceleration of the Universe, scalar fields are the most simple and useful tools to build models of dark energy. This field, however, must in principle couple with the rest of the world and not necessarily in the same way to different particles or fluids. We provide the most complete dynamical system analysis to date, consisting of a canonical scalar field conformally and disformally coupled to both dust and radiation. It has been shown in the last few years that 3-form fields present viable cosmological solutions for inflation and dark energy with particular observable signatures distinct from those of canonical single scalar field inflation. The aim of this work is to explore the dynamics of a single 3-form in five dimensional Randall-Sundrum II braneworld scenario, in which a 3-form is confined to the brane and only gravity propagates in the bulk. We compare the solutions with the standard four dimensional case already studied in the literature. In particular, we evaluate how the spectral index and the ratio of tensor to scalar perturbations are influenced by the presence of the bulk and put constraints on the parameters of the models in the light of the recent Planck 2015 data., Comment: 7 pages, 10 figures

We study a theory in which the electromagnetic field is disformally coupled to a scalar field, in addition to a usual non-minimal electromagnetic coupling. We show that disformal couplings modify the expression for the fine-structure constant, alpha. As a result, the theory we consider can explain the non-zero reported variation in the evolution of alpha by purely considering disformal couplings. We also find that if matter and photons are coupled in the same way to the scalar field, disformal couplings itself do not lead to a variation of the fine-structure constant. A number of scenarios are discussed consistent with the current astrophysical, geochemical, laboratory and the cosmic microwave background radiation constraints on the cosmological evolution of alpha. The models presented are also consistent with the current type Ia supernovae constraints on the effective dark energy equation of state. We find that the Oklo bound in particular puts strong constraints on the model parameters. From our numerical results, we find that the introduction of a non-minimal electromagnetic coupling enhances the cosmological variation in alpha. Better constrained data is expected to be reported by ALMA and with the forthcoming generation of high-resolution ultra-stable spectrographs such as PEPSI, ESPRESSO, and ELT-HIRES. Furthermore, an expected increase in the sensitivity of molecular and nuclear clocks will put a more stringent constraint on current laboratory measurements., Comment: 21 pages, 3 figures

We study models of quintessence consisting of a number of scalar fields coupled to several dark matter components. In the case of exponential potentials the scaling solutions can be described in terms of a single field. The corresponding effective logarithmic slope and effective coupling can be written in a simple form in terms of the individual slopes and couplings of the original fields. We also investigate solutions where the scalar potential is negligible, in particular those leading to transient matter dominated solutions. A setting constituted by $\mathbb{N}$ 3-form fields, without any direct interaction between them, minimally coupled to gravity, is introduced in this paper as a framework to study the early evolution of the universe. We focus particularly on the two 3-forms case. An inflationary scenario is found, emerging from the coupling to gravity. More concretely, the fields coupled in this manner exhibit a complex interaction, mediated by the time derivative of the Hubble parameter. Our investigation is supported by means of a suitable choice of potentials, employing numerical methods and analytical approximations. In more detail, the oscillations on the small field limit become correlated, and one field is intertwined with the other. In this type of solution, a varying sound speed is present, together with the generation of isocurvature perturbations. The mentioned features allow to consider an interesting model, to test against observation. Cosmology with a three-form field interacting with cold dark matter is considered. In particular, the mass of the dark matter particles is assumed to depend upon the amplitude of the three-form field invariant. In comparison to coupled scalar field quintessence, the new features include an effective pressure contribution to the field equations that manifests both in the background and perturbation level. The dynamics of the background is analyzed, and new scaling solutions are found. A simple example model leading to a de Sitter expansion without a potential is studied. The Newtonian limit of cosmological perturbations is derived, and it is deduced that the coupling can be very tightly constrained by the large-scale structure data. We calculate the perturbed action, at second and third order, for a massive three-form field minimally coupled to gravity, and use it to explore the observational predictions of three-form inflation. One intriguing result is that the value of the spectral index is nearly independent of the three-form potential, being fixed solely by the number of e-folds of inflation, with n_s=0.97 for the canonical number of 60. Considering the bispectrum, we employ standard techniques to give explicit results for two models, one of which produces a large non-Gaussianity. We consider the dynamics of a 3-brane embedded in an extra-dimensional Tolman-Bondi Universe where the origin of space plays a special role. The embedding is chosen such that the induced matter distribution on the brane respects the spherical symmetry of matter in the extra dimensional space. The mirage cosmology on the probe brane is studied, resulting in an inhomogeneous and anisotropic four dimensional cosmology where the origin of space is also special. We then focus on the spatial geometry around the origin and show that the induced geometry, which is initially inhomogeneous and anisotropic, converges to an isotropic and homogeneous Friedmann-Lemaitre 4d space-time. For instance, when a 3-brane is embedded in a 5d matter dominated model, the 4d dynamics around the origin converge to a Friedmann-Lemaitre Universe in a radiation dominated epoch.
