This book contains the abstracts presented at the 7th International Conference on Numerical Modelling in Engineering (NME 2024). It is the 7th NME meeting and was held at Xi'an, China, during the period 28-31 July 2024. Previous NME conferences were celebrated in Ghent, Belgium (2018), Beijing, China (2019), and Ghent, Belgium (2020-2023). The overall objective of the conference is to bring together international scientists and engineers in academia and industry in fields related to advanced numerical techniques, such as FEM, BEM, IGA, etc., and their applications to a wide range of engineering disciplines. The conference covers industrial engineering applications of numerical simulations to civil engineering, aerospace engineering, materials engineering, mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, etc.

The volume features high-quality papers based on the presentations at the ICOSAHOM 2020+1 on spectral and high order methods. The carefully reviewed articles cover state of the art topics in high order discretizations of partial differential equations. The volume presents a wide range of topics including the design and analysis of high order methods, the development of fast solvers on modern computer architecture, and the application of these methods in fluid and structural mechanics computations.

The year 2018 marked the 75th anniversary of the founding of Mathematics of Computation, one of the four primary research journals published by the American Mathematical Society and the oldest research journal devoted to computational mathematics. To celebrate this milestone, the symposium “Celebrating 75 Years of Mathematics of Computation” was held from November 1–3, 2018, at the Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics (ICERM), Providence, Rhode Island. The sixteen papers in this volume, written by the symposium speakers and editors of the journal, include both survey articles and new contributions. On the discrete side, there are four papers covering topics in computational number theory and computational algebra. On the continuous side, there are twelve papers covering topics in machine learning, high dimensional approximations, nonlocal and fractional elliptic problems, gradient flows, hyperbolic conservation laws, Maxwell's equations, Stokes's equations, a posteriori error estimation, and iterative methods. Together they provide a snapshot of significant achievements in the past quarter century in computational mathematics and also in important current trends.

Discrete Differential Geometry (DDG) is an emerging discipline at the boundary between mathematics and computer science. It aims to translate concepts from classical differential geometry into a language that is purely finite and discrete, and can hence be used by algorithms to reason about geometric data. In contrast to standard numerical approximation, the central philosophy of DDG is to faithfully and exactly preserve key invariants of geometric objects at the discrete level. This process of translation from smooth to discrete helps to both illuminate the fundamental meaning behind geometric ideas and provide useful algorithmic guarantees. This volume is based on lectures delivered at the 2018 AMS Short Course “Discrete Differential Geometry,” held January 8–9, 2018, in San Diego, California. The papers in this volume illustrate the principles of DDG via several recent topics: discrete nets, discrete differential operators, discrete mappings, discrete conformal geometry, and discrete optimal transport.

This book collects many of the presented papers, as plenary presentations, mini-symposia invited presentations, or contributed talks, from the European Conference on Numerical Mathematics and Advanced Applications (ENUMATH) 2017. The conference was organized by the University of Bergen, Norway from September 25 to 29, 2017. Leading experts in the field presented the latest results and ideas in the designing, implementation, and analysis of numerical algorithms as well as their applications to relevant, societal problems.ENUMATH is a series of conferences held every two years to provide a forum for discussing basic aspects and new trends in numerical mathematics and scientific and industrial applications. These discussions are upheld at the highest level of international expertise. The first ENUMATH conference was held in Paris in 1995 with successive conferences being held at various locations across Europe, including Heidelberg (1997), Jyvaskyla (1999), lschia Porto (2001), Prague (2003), Santiago de Compostela (2005), Graz (2007), Uppsala (2009), Leicester (2011), Lausanne (2013), and Ankara (2015).

Sparse grids are a popular tool for the numerical treatment of high-dimensional problems. Where classical numerical discretization schemes fail in more than three or four dimensions, sparse grids, in their different flavors, are frequently the method of choice. This volume of LNCSE presents selected papers from the proceedings of the fourth workshop on sparse grids and applications, and demonstrates once again the importance of this numerical discretization scheme. The articles present recent advances in the numerical analysis of sparse grids in connection with a range of applications including computational chemistry, computational fluid dynamics, and big data analytics, to name but a few.

This volume contains 13 selected keynote papers presented at the Fourth International Conference on Numerical Analysis and Optimization. Held every three years at Sultan Qaboos University in Muscat, Oman, this conference highlights novel and advanced applications of recent research in numerical analysis and optimization. Each peer-reviewed chapter featured in this book reports on developments in key fields, such as numerical analysis, numerical optimization, numerical linear algebra, numerical differential equations, optimal control, approximation theory, applied mathematics, derivative-free optimization methods, programming models, and challenging applications that frequently arise in statistics, econometrics, finance, physics, medicine, biology, engineering and industry. This book features original research and survey articles on the topics of function spaces and inequalities. It focuses on (variable/grand/small) Lebesgue spaces, Orlicz spaces, Lorentz spaces, and Morrey spaces and deals with mapping properties of operators, (weighted) inequalities, pointwise multipliers and interpolation. Moreover, it considers Sobolev–Besov and Triebel–Lizorkin type smoothness spaces. The book includes papers by leading international researchers, presented at the International Conference on Function Spaces and Inequalities, held at the South Asian University, New Delhi, India, on 11–15 December 2015, which focused on recent developments in the theory of spaces with variable exponents. It also offers further investigations concerning Sobolev-type embeddings, discrete inequalities and harmonic analysis. Each chapter is dedicated to a specific topic and written by leading experts, providing an overview of the subject and stimulating future research.

In various areas of interest, it is important to model, simulate and compute processes on surfaces. In fluid mechanics, a topic of increasing importance is the transport of mass, energy or momentum on phase interfaces. These processes are modelled by partial differential equations on the phase interface and therefore, on moving surfaces that may change rapidly with respect to geometry and topology. In the present work, a numerical framework for solving interfacial convection-diffusion problems based on a Discontinuous Galerkin method is established. In contrast to most traditional approaches, the method introduced here maintains the original Eulerian grid as well as an implicit representation of the interface, rather than establishing a Lagrangian, i.e. interfacial grid. An MPI parallelized and modular software package for the numerical approximation of interfacial transport problems by polynomials of arbitrary order is presented. Well-posedness of the problem and computational efficiency are achieved by a narrow band structure around the moving interface. A pseudo-timestepping method is provided by which extended quantities can be extrapolated to new cells in this dynamic Narrow Band while being accurately preserved on the interface. The method constructed is then used to investigate different interfacial transport problems with and without diffusion numerically.

This volume contains the proceedings of the Seventh International Conference on Complex Analysis and Dynamical Systems, held from May 10–15, 2015, in Nahariya, Israel. The papers in this volume range over a wide variety of topics in the interaction between various branches of mathematical analysis. Taken together, the articles collected here provide the reader with a panorama of activity in complex analysis, geometry, harmonic analysis, and partial differential equations, drawn by a number of leading figures in the field. They testify to the continued vitality of the interplay between classical and modern analysis.

The first part of this volume gathers the lecture notes of the courses of the “XVII Escuela Hispano-Francesa”, held in Gijón, Spain, in June 2016. Each chapter is devoted to an advanced topic and presents state-of-the-art research in a didactic and self-contained way. Young researchers will find a complete guide to beginning advanced work in fields such as High Performance Computing, Numerical Linear Algebra, Optimal Control of Partial Differential Equations and Quantum Mechanics Simulation, while experts in these areas will find a comprehensive reference guide, including some previously unpublished results, and teachers may find these chapters useful as textbooks in graduate courses.The second part features the extended abstracts of selected research work presented by the students during the School. This collection explores computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling and simulation of engineering processes, with contributions from researchers and engineers involved in the modeling of multiscale and multiphase phenomena in material processing systems. The papers cover the following processes: Iron and Steelmaking (Tundish, Casting, Converter, Blast Furnace); Microstructure Evolution; Casting with External Field Interaction; and Smelting, Degassing, Ladle Processing, Mechanical Mixing, and Ingot Casting. The collection also covers applications of CFD to engineering processes, and demonstrates how CFD can help scientists and engineers to better understand the fundamentals of engineering processes.

This volume of LNCSE is a collection of the papers from the proceedings of the third workshop on sparse grids and applications. Sparse grids are a popular approach for the numerical treatment of high-dimensional problems. Where classical numerical discretization schemes fail in more than three or four dimensions, sparse grids, in their different guises, are frequently the method of choice, be it spatially adaptive in the hierarchical basis or via the dimensionally adaptive combination technique. Demonstrating once again the importance of this numerical discretization scheme, the selected articles present recent advances on the numerical analysis of sparse grids as well as efficient data structures. The book also discusses a range of applications, including uncertainty quantification and plasma physics.

The European Conference on Numerical Mathematics and Advanced Applications (ENUMATH), held every 2 years, provides a forum for discussing recent advances in and aspects of numerical mathematics and scientific and industrial applications. The previous ENUMATH meetings took place in Paris (1995), Heidelberg (1997), Jyvaskyla (1999), Ischia (2001), Prague (2003), Santiago de Compostela (2005), Graz (2007), Uppsala (2009), Leicester (2011) and Lausanne (2013). This book presents a selection of invited and contributed lectures from the ENUMATH 2015 conference, which was organised by the Institute of Applied Mathematics (IAM), Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey, from September 14 to 18, 2015. It offers an overview of central recent developments in numerical analysis, computational mathematics, and applications in the form of contributions by leading experts in the field.

Presenting the latest findings in the field of numerical analysis and optimization, this volume balances pure research with practical applications of the subject. Accompanied by detailed tables, figures, and examinations of useful software tools, this volume will equip the reader to perform detailed and layered analysis of complex datasets.Many real-world complex problems can be formulated as optimization tasks. Such problems can be characterized as large scale, unconstrained, constrained, non-convex, non-differentiable, and discontinuous, and therefore require adequate computational methods, algorithms, and software tools. These same tools are often employed by researchers working in current IT hot topics such as big data, optimization and other complex numerical algorithms on the cloud, devising special techniques for supercomputing systems. This volume of LNCSE collects the papers from the proceedings of the second workshop on sparse grids and applications, demonstrating once again the importance of this numerical discretization scheme. The selected articles present recent advances on the numerical analysis of sparse grids as well as efficient data structures, and the range of applications extends to uncertainty quantification settings and clustering, to name but a few examples.

Paul Turán, one of the greatest Hungarian mathematicians, was born 100 years ago, on August 18, 1910. To celebrate this occasion the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the Alfréd Rényi Institute of Mathematics, the János Bolyai Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Institute of Eötvös Loránd University organized an international conference devoted to Paul Turán's main areas of interest: number theory, selected branches of analysis, and selected branches of combinatorics. The conference was held in Budapest, August 22-26, 2011. Some of the invited lectures reviewed different aspects of Paul Turán's work and influence. Most of the lectures allowed participants to report about their own work in the above mentioned areas of mathematics.

The European Conferences on Numerical Mathematics and Advanced Applications (ENUMATH) are a series of conferences held every two years to provide a forum for discussion of new trends in numerical mathematics and challenging scientific and industrial applications at the highest level of international expertise. ENUMATH 2011 was hosted by the University of Leicester (UK) from the 5th to 9th September 2011. This proceedings volume contains more than 90 papers by speakers of the conference and gives an overview of recent developments in scientific computing, numerical analysis, and practical use of modern numerical techniques and algorithms in various applications. New results on finite element methods, multiscale methods, numerical linear algebra, and finite difference schemes are presented. A range of applications include computational problems from fluid dynamics, materials, image processing, and molecular dynamics.​

This book is the official proceedings of a conference on Numerical Methods in Approximation Theory which was held at the Mathematisches Forschungs­ institut in Oberwolfach during the week of November 24~30, 1991. It contains refereed and edited papers by 20 of the 49 participants. The book is dedicated to the memory of Prof. Lothar Collatz who main­ tained a long and active interest in numerical approximation. It is the ninth in a series of volumes published by Birkhiiuser resulting from conferences on the subject held at Oberwolfach, and co-organized by Prof. Collatz. We now briefly describe the contents of the book. The paper of BASZEN­ SKI, DELVOS and JESTER deals with blending using sine double series expan­ sions of functions defined on the unit square. In addition to giving explicit error estimates for partial sums and for interpolating sine polynomials, they also show that Boolean sums yield almost the same asymptotic error estimates as the conventional tensor-product approach, but with a reduced number of terms. The paper of BEATSON and LIGHT discusses approximation by quasi­ interpolants which are sums of scaled translates of a one-parameter family of functions. They do not require reproduction of low degree polynomials, but nevertheless are able to give error bounds and analyze quasi-interpolation based on Gaussians and exponentials. BINEV and JETTER deal with multivariate interpolation using shifts of a single basis function. They treat both gridded data and scattered data. As examples, they consider box splines and certain radial basis functions.

In January 1992, the Sixth Workshop on Optimization and Numerical Analysis was held in the heart of the Mixteco-Zapoteca region, in the city of Oaxaca, Mexico, a beautiful and culturally rich site in ancient, colonial and modern Mexican civiliza­ tion. The Workshop was organized by the Numerical Analysis Department at the Institute of Research in Applied Mathematics of the National University of Mexico in collaboration with the Mathematical Sciences Department at Rice University, as were the previous ones in 1978, 1979, 1981, 1984 and 1989. As were the third, fourth, and fifth workshops, this one was supported by a grant from the Mexican National Council for Science and Technology, and the US National Science Foundation, as part of the joint Scientific and Technical Cooperation Program existing between these two countries. The participation of many of the leading figures in the field resulted in a good representation of the state of the art in Continuous Optimization, and in an over­ view of several topics including Numerical Methods for Diffusion-Advection PDE problems as well as some Numerical Linear Algebraic Methods to solve related pro­ blems. This book collects some of the papers given at this Workshop.

In the recent decade, there has been a growing interest in the numerical treatment of high-dimensional problems. It is well known that classical numerical discretization schemes fail in more than three or four dimensions due to the curse of dimensionality. The technique of sparse grids helps overcome this problem to some extent under suitable regularity assumptions. This discretization approach is obtained from a multi-scale basis by a tensor product construction and subsequent truncation of the resulting multiresolution series expansion. This volume of LNCSE is a collection of the papers from the proceedings of the workshop on sparse grids and its applications held in Bonn in May 2011. The selected articles present recent advances in the mathematical understanding and analysis of sparse grid discretization. Aspects arising from applications are given particular attention.

Many important phenomena in fluid motion are evident in vortex flow, i.e., flows in which vortical structures are significant in determining the whole flow. This book, which consists of lectures given at a NATO ARW held in Grenoble (France) in June 1992, provides an up-to-date account of current research in the study of these phenomena by means of numerical methods and mathematical modelling. Such methods include Eulerian methods (finite difference, spectral and wavelet methods) as well as Lagrangian methods (contour dynamics, vortex methods) and are used to study such topics as 2- or 3-dimensional turbulence, vorticity generation by solid bodies, shear layers and vortex sheets, and vortex reconnection. For researchers and graduate students in computational fluid dynamics, numerical analysis, and applied mathematics.

This book contains the results in numerical analysis and optimization presented at the ECCOMAS thematic conference “Computational Analysis and Optimization” (CAO 2011) held in Jyväskylä, Finland, June 9–11, 2011. Both the conference and this volume are dedicated to Professor Pekka Neittaanmäki on the occasion of his sixtieth birthday. It consists of five parts that are closely related to his scientific activities and interests: Numerical Methods for Nonlinear Problems; Reliable Methods for Computer Simulation; Analysis of Noised and Uncertain Data; Optimization Methods; Mathematical Models Generated by Modern Technological Problems. The book also includes a short biography of Professor Neittaanmäki.

However, the'tree'of knowledge of mathematics and related fields does not grow only by putting forth new branches. It also happens, quite often in fact, that branches which were thought to be completely disparate are suddenly seen to be related. Further, the kind and level of sophistication of mathematics applied in various sciences has changed drastically in recent years: measure theory is used (non-trivially) in regional and theoretical economics; algebraic geometry interacts with physics; the Minkowsky lemma, coding theory and the structure of water meet one another in packing and covering theory; quantum fields, crystal defects and mathematical programming profit from homotopy theory; Lie algebras are relevant to filtering; use Stein spaces. And in addition to this there are and prediction and electrical engineering can such new emerging subdisciplines as'experimental mathematics','CFD','completely integrable systems','chaos, synergetics and large-scale order', which are almost impossible to fit into the existing classification schemes. They draw upon widely different sections of mathematics.

These are the proceedings of the international conference on'Nonlinear numerical methods and Rational approximation II'organised by Annie Cuyt at the University of Antwerp (Belgium), 05-11 September 1993. It was held for the third time in Antwerp at the conference center of UIA, after successful meetings in 1979 and 1987 and an almost yearly tradition since the early 70's. The following figures illustrate the growing number of participants and their geographical dissemination. In 1993 the Belgian scientific committee consisted of A. Bultheel (Leuven), A. Cuyt (Antwerp), J. Meinguet (Louvain-Ia-Neuve) and J.-P. Thiran (Namur). The conference focused on the use of rational functions in different fields of Numer­ ical Analysis. The invited speakers discussed'Orthogonal polynomials'(D. S. Lu­ binsky),'Rational interpolation'(M. Gutknecht),'Rational approximation'(E. B. Saff),'Pade approximation'(A. Gonchar) and'Continued fractions'(W. B. Jones). In contributed talks multivariate and multidimensional problems, applications and implementations of each main topic were considered. To each of the five main topics a separate conference day was devoted and a separate proceedings chapter compiled accordingly. In this way the proceedings reflect the organisation of the talks at the conference. Nonlinear numerical methods and rational approximation may be a nar­ row field for the outside world, but it provides a vast playground for the chosen ones. It can fascinate specialists from Moscow to South-Africa, from Boulder in Colorado and from sunny Florida to Zurich in Switzerland.

This book contains a collection of articles corresponding to some of the talks delivered at the Foundations of Computational Mathematics conference held at IMPA in Rio de Janeiro in January 1997. Some ofthe others are published in the December 1996 issue of the Journal of Complexity. Both of these publications were available and distributed at the meeting. Even in this aspect we hope to have achieved a synthesis of the mathematics and computer science cultures as well as of the disciplines. The reaction to the Park City meeting on Mathematics of Numerical Analy­ sis: Real Number Algorithms which was chaired by Steve Smale and had around 275 participants, was very enthusiastic. At the suggestion of Narendra Karmar­ mar a lunch time meeting of Felipe Cucker, Arieh Iserles, Narendra Karmarkar, Jim Renegar, Mike Shub and Steve Smale decided to try to hold a periodic meeting entitled'Foundations of Computational Mathematics'and to form an organization with the same name whose primary purpose will be to hold the meeting. This is then the first edition of FoCM as such. It has been organized around a small collection of workshops, namely - Systems of algebraic equations and computational algebraic geometry - Homotopy methods and real machines - Information-based complexity - Numerical linear algebra - Approximation and PDEs - Optimization - Differential equations and dynamical systems - Relations to computer science - Vision and related computational tools There were also twelve plenary speakers.

This book is a snapshot of current research in multiscale modeling, computations and applications. It covers fundamental mathematical theory, numerical algorithms as well as practical computational advice for analysing single and multiphysics models containing a variety of scales in time and space. Complex fluids, porous media flow and oscillatory dynamical systems are treated in some extra depth, as well as tools like analytical and numerical homogenization, and fast multipole method.

These proceedings collect the major part of the lectures given at ENU­ MATH2003, the European Conference on Numerical Mathematics and Ad­ vanced Applications, held in Prague, Czech Republic, from 18 August to 22 August, 2003. The importance of numerical and computational mathematics and sci­ entific computing is permanently growing. There is an increasing number of different research areas, where numerical simulation is necessary. Let us men­ tion fluid dynamics, continuum mechanics, electromagnetism, phase transi­ tion, cosmology, medicine, economics, finance, etc. The success of applications of numerical methods is conditioned by changing its basic instruments and looking for new appropriate techniques adapted to new problems as well as new computer architectures. The ENUMATH conferences were established in order to provide a fo­ rum for discussion of current topics of numerical mathematics. They seek to convene leading experts and young scientists with special emphasis on con­ tributions from Europe. Recent results and new trends are discussed in the analysis of numerical algorithms as well as in their applications to challenging scientific and industrial problems. The first ENUMATH conference was organized in Paris in 1995, then the series continued by the conferences in Heidelberg 1997, Jyvaskyla 1999 and Ischia Porto 2001. It was a great pleasure and honour for the Czech numerical community that it was decided at Ischia Porto to organize the ENUMATH2003 in Prague. It was the first time when this conference crossed the former Iron Courtain and was organized in a postsocialist country.

The Foundations of Computational Mathematics meetings are a platform for cross-fertilisation between numerical analysis, mathematics and computer science. This volume is a collection of articles based on plenary presentations, given at the 2011 meeting, by some of the world's foremost authorities in computational mathematics. The topics covered reflect the breadth of research within the area as well as the richness of interactions between seemingly unrelated branches of pure and applied mathematics. As a result this volume will be of interest to researchers in the field of computational mathematics and also to non-experts who wish to gain some insight into the state of the art in this active and significant field.

Scientific computing is a fast growing and fast changing area whose applications to various branches of science, engineering, medicine, economics (and others) are increasing in number and relevance every day. There are two main reasons (among others) that make scientific computing change so rapidly. One is the increasing number of different research areas beginning to make use of numerical simulation: from nanotechnology to genomics, from computer­ aided diagnosis and operations in medical applications (which involve often com­ plete simulations of parts of the human body) to economics and finance. Each new application, and each new aspect of earlier applications, draws heavily on the know­ how that has been acquired on other problems with similar mathematical features. It has to be pointed out that the lofty perspective of mathematics succeeds quite often in finding connections among very different phenomena, that tum out in the end to share the same mathematical and numerical structure. In tum, new applica­ tions contribute to the cross-fertilization by'sending back'new interpretations and suggestions which are often useful in more classical applications. All this creates a resonance effect that contributes greatly to the growth rate of the whole field.

On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Sophus Lie, an International Work­ shop'Modern Group Analysis: advanced analytical and computational methods in mathematical physics'has been organized in Acireale (Catania, Sicily, October 27­ 31, 1992). The Workshop was aimed to enlighten the present state ofthis rapidly expanding branch of applied mathematics. Main topics of the Conference were: • classical Lie groups applied for constructing invariant solutions and conservation laws; • conditional (partial) symmetries; • Backlund transformations; • approximate symmetries; • group analysis of finite-difference equations; • problems of group classification; • software packages in group analysis. The success of the Workshop was due to the participation of many experts in Group Analysis from different countries. This book consists of selected papers presented at the Workshop. We would like to thank the Scientific Committee for the generous support of recommending invited lectures and selecting the papers for this volume, as well as the members of the Organizing Committee for their help. Much of what is known about specific dynamical systems is obtained from numerical experiments. Although the discretization process usually has no significant effect on the results for simple, well-behaved dynamics, acute sensitivity to changes in initial conditions is a hallmark of chaotic behavior. How confident can one be that the numerical dynamics reflects that of the original system? Do numerically calculated trajectories always shadow a true one? What role does numerical analysis play in the study of dynamical systems? And conversely, can advances in dynamical systems provide new insights into numerical algorithms? These and related issues were the focus of the workshop on Chaotic Numerics, held at Deakin University in Geelong, Australia, in July 1993. The contributions to this book are based on lectures presented during the workshop and provide a broad overview of this area of research.

This is the proceedings from the ENUMATH 2009 conference in Uppsala, Sweden, in June 29- July 3, 2009, with about 100 papers by the invited speakers and the speakers in the minisymposia and contributed sessions. The volume gives an overview of contemporary techniques, algorithms and results in numerical mathematics, scientific computing and their applications. Examples of methods are finite element methods, multiscale methods, numerical linear algebra, and high performance computing algorithms applied to problems in fluid flow, materials, electromagnetics, and chemistry.

The 1947 paper by John von Neumann and Herman Goldstine, “Numerical Inverting of Matrices of High Order” (Bulletin of the AMS, Nov. 1947), is considered as the birth certificate of numerical analysis. Since its publication, the evolution of this domain has been enormous. This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Numerical Analysis and Its Applications, NAA 2008, held in Lozenetz, Bulgaria in June 2008. The 61 revised full papers presented together with 13 invited papers were carefully selected during two rounds of reviewing and improvement. The papers address all current aspects of numerical analysis and discuss a wide range of problems concerning recent achievements in physics, chemistry, engineering, and economics. A special focus is given to numerical approximation and computational geometry, numerical linear algebra and numerical solution of transcendental equations, numerical methods for differential equations, numerical modeling, and high performance scientific computing.
