Abstract

The significance of spillage of tumor cells into the abdominal cavity by fine needle aspiration or rupture of adnexel masses in case of malignancy is the focus. However, the appearance rate of malignant cells in cyst fluid by fine needle aspiration has been quite variable. We therefore evaluated the appearance rate of malignant cells in the cyst fluid from malignant ovarian tumors. Our study population included 29 women with malignant ovarian tumor who attended two hospitals between November 1995 and October 1998. Cyst fluid samples were aspirated from the tumors immediately after the removal of tumor. All cytologic and histologic preparations were reviewed by investigators who did not know any information of the tissues. A considerable number of viable malignant cells were found in twenty two of 26 adnexal malignancies (84.6%). There was no significant difference in the appearance of viable tumor cells among different histologic types of tumor. Four negative cases included 3 mucinous tumors of borderline malignancy and one endometrioid adenocarcima (G1). The cyst fluid of most of the malignant ovarian tumor contains viable tumor cells, suggesting the risk of spillage of malignant tumor cells. On the other hand, there may be decreased risk of spillage of malignant tumor cells in mucinous tumors of borderline malignancy.

Abstract

We report here a case of stage IIIc right ovarian cancer, who was presumed stage Ia at surgery but was found later to have metastasis at the para-arotic lymph node and tumor involvement in the lymphatic along the right ovarian vessel. The surgical strategy for presumed stage Ia ovarian cancer may include pelvic and para-arotic lymphadenectomy, with the resection of lymphatic tissue along ovarian vessels.

Abstract

Squamous cell carcinoma antigen (SCCA) is expressed in normal squamous epithelia and malignant squamous cell tissues. The serum level of SCCA has been used to evaluate treatment efficacy, clinical course of disease, and recurrence. SCCA is produced by at least two genes (SCCA1and SCCA2); both of them have been located on chromosome 18q21.3. It has been difficult to examine the expression levels of SCCA1and SCCA2mRNAs separately because of their high homology at nucleotide level. In the present study, asymmetric semi-nested reverse transcription PCR, based on the principle of fluorescence energy transfer, enabled to quantitate the copy numbers of both SCCA1and SCCA2mRNAs. Using this method, the expression levels of these mRNAs were evaluated in normal and malignant squamous tissues. The copy number of SCCA2mRNA was higher in malignant tissues than in normal tissues, while those of SCCA1mRNA did not significantly differ between normal and malignant tissues. These data indicate that specific quantitation of the expression level of SCCA2mRNA may be useful for the diagnosis and management of patients with squamous cell carcinoma.
