Abstract

We report on double-differential inclusive cross-sections of the production of secondary protons, charged pions, and deuterons, in the interactions with a 5% nuclear interaction length thick stationary carbon target, of proton and pion beams with momentum from \pm 3 GeV/c to \pm 15 GeV/c. Results are given for secondary particles with production angles between 20 and 125 degrees. Cross-sections on carbon nuclei are compared with cross-sections on beryllium, copper, tantalum and lead nuclei., Comment: 67 pages, 13 figures

Abstract

The results of the measurements of the double-differential production cross-sections of pions, dσ/dpdΩ, in p C and π C interactions using the forward spectrometer of the HARP experiment are presented. The incident particles are 12 GeV/c protons and charged pions directed onto a carbon target with a thickness of 5% of a nuclear interaction length. For p C interactions the analysis is performed using 100,035 reconstructed secondary tracks, while the corresponding numbers of tracks for π C and π C analyses are 106,534 and 10,122, respectively. Cross-section results are presented in the kinematic range 0.5GeV/c⩽pπ

Abstract

In the study of the reaction $e^+e^-\to K_{S}K_{L}$ at the VEPP-2M $e^+e^-$ collider with the SND detector the nuclear interaction length of $K_{L}$ meson in NaI(Tl) has been measured. Its value is found to be 30--50 cm in the $K_{L}$ momentum range 0.11--0.48 GeV/$c$. The results are compared with the values used in the simulation programs GEANT4 and UNIMOD., Comment: accepted in JINST

Abstract

Spectra of KS0 mesons and Λ hyperons were measured in p + C interactions at 31 GeV/c with the large acceptance NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS. The data were collected with an isotropic graphite target with a thickness of 4% of a nuclear interaction length. Interaction cross sections, charged pion spectra, and charged kaon spectra were previously measured using the same data set. Results on KS0 and Λ production in p + C interactions serve as a reference for the understanding of the enhancement of strangeness production in nucleus-nucleus collisions. Moreover, they provide important input for the improvement of neutrino flux predictions for the T2K long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment in Japan. Inclusive production cross sections for KS0 and Λ are presented as a function of laboratory momentum in intervals of the laboratory polar angle covering the range from 0 up to 240 mrad. The results are compared with predictions of several hadron production models. The KS0 mean multiplicity in production processes 〈nKS0〉 and the inclusive cross section for KS0 production σKS0 were measured and amount to 0.127 ± 0.005 (stat) ± 0.022 (sys) and 29.0 ± 1.6 (stat) ± 5.0 (sys) mb, respectively. © 2014 American Physical Society.

Abstract

Spectra of positively charged kaons in p+C interactions at 31 GeV/c were measured with the NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS. The analysis is based on the full set of data collected in 2007 with a graphite target with a thickness of 4% of a nuclear interaction length. Interaction cross sections and charged pion spectra were already measured using the same set of data. These new measurements in combination with the published ones are required to improve predictions of the neutrino flux for the T2K long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment in Japan. In particular, the knowledge of kaon production is crucial for precisely predicting the intrinsic electron neutrino component and the high energy tail of the T2K beam. The results are presented as a function of laboratory momentum in 2 intervals of the laboratory polar angle covering the range from 20 up to 240 mrad. The kaon spectra are compared with predictions of several hadron production models. Using the published pion results and the new kaon data, the K+/\pi+ ratios are computed., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures

Abstract

A detector with a modest sized magnetic field volume will, of necessity, have inert material (solenoid coil) in front of the calorimetry. It is therefore crucial to assess the impact of that material on the physics of interest. Since the thickness of material is of order a radiation length, Xo, and only a fraction of a nuclear interaction length, the physics topics concern the EM calorimetry. In this note, a Higgs boson with a wide variety of masses is used as a paradigm of SSC physics. Low mass Higgs bosons approximate the kinematics of inclusive Z production, while high mass Higgs bosons probe the extremes of phase space to be explored at the SSC. The scale of interest is the natural width of the Z, since backgrounds will increase should the resolution due to the inert material exceed this basic scale. 4 refs., 3 figs.

Abstract

The statistical accuracy of nuclear interaction length estimation from the distribution of interaction points inside a segmented target, composed of alternating layers of absorbers and detectors, is studied. It is shown that for a given number of target segments the thickness of the absorber layers can be optimized allowing to achieve an almost limiting statistical accuracy of measurements.

12. An investigation into the electron-proton discrimination capabilities of ionization calorimeters

Abstract

This paper seeks to provide an experimental indication of the rate at which protons mimic electrons in ionization calorimeters. A pseudo-theoretical electron cascade function was fitted to calorimeter events caused by 300 GeV accelerator protons in order to see what fraction of the protons looked like electrons. For calorimeters longer than one nuclear interaction length, the results were in good agreement with the theory which says that only one process should make a significant contribution to the mimicking of electrons by protons: the diffractive excitation of the incident proton, producing a π0 while the incident proton continues on undeflected without further interactions. For calorimeters shorter than one nuclear interaction length a much higher mimic rate was seen, which is to be expected since hadrons produced with a π0 can easily pass undetected through the calorimeter. These results can be used to estimate the contamination of the data of past experiments and as support for the predictions being used to design future experiments.

Abstract

The work of Rochester and Butler, published in 1948, and that of Butler, Rosser and Barker, published in 1950, has been continued. In particular, the interaction properties and the spectrum of the penetrating particles are considered. The interaction length of the shower particles with momenta greater than 109 ev/C. is found to be 18 cm. lead (±20%).

We report on double-differential inclusive cross-sections of the production of secondary protons, charged pions, and deuterons, in the interactions with a 5% nuclear interaction length thick stationary tantalum target, of proton and pion beams with momentum from +/-3 GeV/c to +/-15 GeV/c. Results are given for secondary particles with production angles between 20 and 125 degrees. Abstract

Measurements of hadron production in p+C interactions at 31 GeV/c are performed using the NA61/ SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS. The analysis is based on the full set of data collected in 2009 using a graphite target with a thickness of 4% of a nuclear interaction length. Inelastic and production cross sections as well as spectra of $\pi^\pm$, $K^\pm$, p, $K^0_S$ and $\Lambda$ are measured with high precision. These measurements are essential for improved calculations of the initial neutrino fluxes in the T2K long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment in Japan. A comparison of the NA61/SHINE measurements with predictions of several hadroproduction models is presented.
