We introduce a new method for the study of fluctuations of partial transition widths based on nuclear resonance fluorescence experiments with quasimonochromatic linearly-polarized photon beams below particle separation thresholds. It is based on the average branching of decays of $J=1$ states of an even-even nucleus to the $2^+_1$ state in comparison to the ground state. Between 5 and 7 MeV, an almost constant average branching ratio of 0.490(16) is observed for the nuclide $^{150}$Nd. Assuming $\chi^2$-distributed partial transition widths, this average branching ratio is related to a degree of freedom of $\nu = 1.93(12)$, rejecting the validity of the Porter-Thomas distribution, requiring $\nu=1$. The observed deviation can be explained by non-statistical effects in the $\gamma$-decay behavior with contributions in the range of 9.4(10)% up to 94(10)%., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures

This paper presents the successful application of a phase-lock feedback system to maintain the resonance condition of a radio frequency (rf) spin rotator (specifically, an rf Wien filter) with respect to a 120 kHz spin precession in the Cooler Synchrotron (COSY) storage ring. Real-time monitoring of the spin precession and the rf Wien filter signal allows the relative phase between the two to be stabilized at an arbitrary setpoint. The feedback system compensates for deviations in the relative phase by adjusting the frequency and/or phase as needed. With this method, a variation in phase relative to the demand phase with a standard deviation of $\sigma_{\Delta\varphi}\approx 0.2\mathrm{rad}$ could be achieved. The system was implemented in two runs aiming at a first direct measurement of the deuteron electric dipole moment in 2018 and 2021. In addition, the difference between a single-bunch beam affected by the spin rotator and a two-bunch system in which only one bunch is exposed to the spin rotator fields is discussed. Both methods have been used during these beam times. The TOV equations govern the radial evolution of pressure and energy density in static neutron stars (NSs) in hydrodynamical equilibrium. Using the reduced pressure and energy density with respect to the NS central energy density, the original TOV equations can be recast into dimensionless forms. While the traditionally used integral approach for solving the original TOV equations require an input nuclear Equation of State (EOS), the dimensionless TOV equations can be anatomized by using the reduced pressure and energy density as polynomials of the reduced radial coordinate without using any input nuclear EOS. Interesting and novel perspectives about NS core EOS can be extracted directly from NS observables using this new approach based on Intrinsic and Perturbative Analyses of the Dimensionless (IPAD) TOV equations (IPAD-TOV). In this review, we first discuss the length and energy density scales of NSs as well as the dimensionless TOV equations for scaled variables and their perturbative solutions near NS cores. We then review several new insights into NS physics gained from using the IPAD-TOV. We also demonstrate that the strong-field gravity plays a fundamental role in extruding a peak in the density/radius profile of the speed of sound squared (SSS) in massive NS cores independent of the nuclear EOS. Modeling detector response is a key challenge in time projection chambers. We cast this problem as an unpaired point cloud translation task, between data collected from simulations and from experimental runs. Effective translation can assist with both noise rejection and the construction of high-fidelity simulators. Building on recent work in diffusion probabilistic models, we present a novel framework for performing this mapping. We provide an updated global extraction of the neutron magnetic form factor, including new extractions from $^3$H-$^3$He comparisons at Jefferson Lab. Our new global fit addresses discrepancies between previous data sets at modest momentum transfer by separating the uncertainties from world data into normalization and uncorrelated uncertainties. Di-hadron and di-jet correlation measurements in proton-nucleus ($p$+A) and electron--nucleus collisions are widely motivated as sensitive probes of novel, non-linear QCD saturation dynamics in hadrons, which are particularly accessible in the dense nuclear environment at low values of Bjorken-$x$ ($x_\mathrm{A})$. Current measurements at RHIC and the LHC observe a significant suppression in the per-trigger yield at forward rapidities compared to that in proton-proton collisions, nominally consistent with the "mono-jet" production expected in a saturation scenario. However, the width of the azimuthal correlation remains unmodified, in contradiction to the qualitative expectations from this physics picture. I investigate whether the construction of these observables leaves them sensitive to effects from simple nuclear shadowing as captured by, for example, universal nuclear parton distribution function (nPDF) analyses. I find that modern nPDF sets, informed by recent precision measurements sensitive to the shadowing of low-$x_\mathrm{A}$ gluon densities in LHC and other data, can describe all or the majority of the di-hadron/jet suppression effects in $p$+A data at both RHIC and the LHC, while giving a natural explanation for why the azimuthal correlation width is unmodified. Notably, this is achieved via a $(x_\mathrm{A},Q^2)$-differential suppression of overall cross-sections only, without requiring additional physics dynamics which alter the inter-event correlations., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, comments welcome before journal submission

The $\beta$-delayed neutron emission in the $^{85, 86}$As $\beta$-decays has been measured at the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On Line facility of the Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Jyv\"askyl\"a. The complete $\beta$-decays have been studied with a complex setup that consists of a plastic scintillator for $\beta$-particles, MONSTER -- the MOdular Neutron time-of-flight SpectromeTER -- for neutrons, and a high-purity germanium and four LaBr$_3$ crystals for $\gamma$-rays. The $\beta$-delayed neutron energy distributions have been determined by unfolding the time-of-flight spectra with an innovative methodology based on the iterative Bayesian unfolding method and accurate Monte Carlo simulations. The results obtained for $^{85}$As are in excellent agreement with the existing evaluated data, validating the proposed methodology. The lifetime of free neutrons measured in the lab has a long standing disparity of $\sim$9~s. A space-based technique has recently been proposed to independently measure the neutron lifetime using interactions between the galactic cosmic rays and a low atmosphere planetary body. This technique has not produced competitive results yet due to constraints of non-optimized data that contain large systematic errors. We use data from the neutron spectrometer on-board NASA's Lunar Prospector, and quantify the effects of lunar sub-surface temperature and the composition on the measurement of neutron lifetime. We use the HeCd and HeSn neutron spectrometer data when the spacecraft was in a highly elliptical orbit during the orbit insertion period. We report the neutron lifetime using lunar composition maps at different resolutions: 5$^{\circ}$ Prettyman+2006 and 2$^{\circ}$ re-binned Wilson+2021 maps to be 777.59$\pm$11.71~s and 739.64$\pm$10.83~s respectively. Further, for the 20$^{\circ}$ map, we apply both a constant equatorial and a latitude-dependent temperature model and report 738.63$\pm$10.75~s and 767.33$\pm$11.17~s respectively. The reactions of p+$^{12}$C with triangular 3$\alpha$ structure and spherical structure with incident energies ranging from 5 to 200 MeV/nucleon are simulated by the in the extended-quantum-molecular-dynamics (EQMD) model together with the GEMINI decay process. This paper presents the incident energy dependence of the branching ratios of fragment production and multiplicity, as well as the associated event information entropy. The results indicate that the triangular 3$\alpha$ $^{12}$C has an extra branching ratio for the quasi-elastic reaction compared to the spherical $^{12}$C. This peculiarity of the branching ratios of the triangular 3$\alpha$ $^{12}$C appears as a small dent in the curves of the event information entropy (both the fragment information entropy and the multiplicity information entropy). Therefore, we propose that the event information entropy could be a probe for detecting the $\alpha$-cluster structure., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

The future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) will operate a series of high-luminosity high-energy electron+proton ($e+p$) and electron+nucleus ($\textit{e + A}$) collisions to study several fundamental questions in the high energy and nuclear physics field. Heavy flavor hadron and jet production at the EIC plays an important role in exploring both potential modification on the initial-state nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs) and final-state parton propagation and hadronization processes under different nuclear medium conditions. The current design of the EIC ePIC detector has good performance of vertex and track reconstruction, particle identification and energy determination in the pseudorapidity region of $-3.5<\eta<3.5$, which will enable a series of high precision heavy flavor hadron and jet measurements. Latest simulation studies of the projected nuclear modification factor $R_{eA}$ of heavy flavor jets and heavy flavor hadron inside jets in $e+p$ and $\textit{e + Au}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 28.6 GeV and 63.2 GeV as well as the projected statistical accuracy of inclusive and differential charm baryon over meson ratio measurements in $e+p$ collisions will be presented. The traditional Fermi function ansatz for nuclear beta decay describes enhanced perturbative effects in the limit of large nuclear charge $Z$ and/or small electron velocity $\beta$. We define and compute the quantum field theory object that replaces this ansatz for neutron beta decay, where neither of these limits hold. We present a new factorization formula that applies in the limit of small electron mass, analyze the components of this formula through two loop order, and resum perturbative corrections that are enhanced by large logarithms. We apply our results to the neutron lifetime, supplying the first two-loop input to the long-distance corrections. Our result can be summarized as \begin{equation*} \tau_n \times |V_{ud}|^2\big[1+3\lambda^2\big]\big[1+\Delta_R\big] = \frac{5263.284(17)\,{\rm s}} {1 + 27.04(7)\times 10^{-3} }~, \end{equation*} with $|V_{ud}|$ the up-down quark mixing parameter, $\tau_n$ the neutron's lifetime, $\lambda$ the ratio of axial to vector charge, and $\Delta_R$ the short-distance matching correction. We find a shift in the long-distance radiative corrections compared to previous work, and discuss implications for extractions of $|V_{ud}|$ and tests of the Standard Model.

Using the expansion of Zubarev's density operator, we develop a linear response approach to study various spin physics in a locally equilibrated medium, particularly focusing on various polarization phenomena in heavy-ion collisions. Specifically, we connect familiar correlation functions and diagrammatic methods to the Zubarev formalism, enabling the use of established techniques like the Matsubara/imaginary time formalism to facilitate calculations. For a spin-1/2 particle, we re-derive its vector polarization using this Zubarev response approach, which exactly reproduces with our previous results based on Luttinger's method. For a spin-1 particle, we calculate the vector polarization and find the expected contributions from vorticity, temperature gradients, and shear, which are identical to those for spin-1/2 particles except for a factor of 4/3 as expected. For the tensor polarization and spin alignment of a spin-1 boson, we explicitly prove that the non-dissipative contribution is zero at leading order in gradients, and briefly reiterate our previous findings for the dissipative contribution with further discussions on several concerns. Additionally, we discuss several relevant subtleties and questions, including an alternative derivation for Zubarev response approach, the covariance issues of different spin density matrix definitions, a further explanation of slow and fast modes, the mode selection scheme, etc. We also discuss skeleton expansions, higher-order contributions, and non-perturbative methods, particularly their potential connection to lattice field theory. In the pursuit of identifying rare two-particle events within the GADGET II Time Projection Chamber (TPC), this paper presents a comprehensive approach for leveraging Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and various data processing methods. To address the inherent complexities of 3D TPC track reconstructions, the data is expressed in 2D projections and 1D quantities. This approach capitalizes on the diverse data modalities of the TPC, allowing for the efficient representation of the distinct features of the 3D events, with no loss in topology uniqueness. Additionally, it leverages the computational efficiency of 2D CNNs and benefits from the extensive availability of pre-trained models. Given the scarcity of real training data for the rare events of interest, simulated events are used to train the models to detect real events. To account for potential distribution shifts when predominantly depending on simulations, significant perturbations are embedded within the simulations. This produces a broad parameter space that works to account for potential physics parameter and detector response variations and uncertainties. These parameter-varied simulations are used to train sensitive 2D CNN object detectors. When combined with 1D histogram peak detection algorithms, this multi-modal detection framework is highly adept at identifying rare, two-particle events in data taken during experiment 21072 at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB), demonstrating a 100% recall for events of interest. We present the methods and outcomes of our investigation and discuss the potential future applications of these techniques.

Recent experiments have found spin alignment of $J/\psi$ with respect to event plane in heavy ion collisions, suggesting a medium effect that is spin dependent. We propose a possible mechanism with polarized dissociation from the motion of $J/\psi$ with respect to the medium. We calculate polarized dissociation rate for quarkonium spin triplet state from spin chromomagnetic coupling in the potential non-relativistic QCD framework. This is done for the leading order gluo-dissociation process and next to leading order inelastic Coulomb scattering process. The polarized dissociation rate is expressed as a function of relative velocity between quarkonium and QGP and the quantization axis. Applying the polarized dissociation rate to quarkonium evolution with dissociation effect only in a Bjorken flow, we find the spin $0$ state to dissociate less than the other spin states, leading to positive $\rho_{00}-1/3$. Regeneration contribution is expected to give a contribution with the opposite sign., Comment: 28 pages, 8 figures

QCD jets are considered important probes for quark gluon plasma created in collisions of nuclei at high energies. Their parton showers are significantly altered if they develop inside of a deconfined medium. Hadronization of jets is also thought to be affected by the presence of quarks and gluons. We present a systematic study of the effects of a thermal bath of partons on the hadronization of parton showers. We use the JETSCAPE framework to create parton showers both in vacuum and in a brick of quark gluon plasma. The brick setup allows important parameters, like the size of the plasma as well as the collective flow of partons, to be varied systematically. We hadronize the parton showers using Hybrid Hadronization, which permits shower partons to form strings with thermal partons, or to recombine directly with thermal partons as well as with each other. We find a sizeable amount of interaction of shower partons with thermal partons during hadronization, indicating a natural continuation of the interaction of jet and medium during this stage. The observed effects grow with the size of the medium. Collective flow easily transfers from the thermal partons onto the emerging jet hadrons. We also see a significant change in hadron chemistry as expected in the presence of quark recombination processes., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

We demonstrate optical cycling and transverse laser cooling of a beam of fermionic 137BaF molecules. Their high masses and nuclear spins make these molecules sensitive probes for parity violation and properties of the weak interaction. However, the nuclear spins also lead to a quasi-closed cycling transition currently involving up to 112 levels, which significantly exceeds the complexity in other laser-cooled molecules. Optical cycling and cooling are facilitated through carefully designed optical spectra tailored to this molecular structure. Our results pave the way for efficient state preparation, detection, and cooling in precision measurements using this species and other similar species., Comment: 4.5 pages, 4 figures

High-energy nuclear collisions were recently employed as an "imaging-by-smashing" tool to reveal the global shapes of colliding nuclei. Here, I explain how nuclear shapes become encoded during quark-gluon plasma formation and evolution, and how they can be decoded from final-state particle distributions. We investigate the cluster configurations in Li isotopes, which are described in the optimization of the multi-Slater determinants of the antisymmetrized molecular dynamics. Each Slater determinant in the superposition is determined simultaneously in the variation of the total energy. The configurations of the excited states are obtained by imposing the orthogonal condition to the ground-state configurations. In Li isotopes, various cluster configurations are confirmed and are related to the thresholds of the corresponding cluster emissions. For $^5$Li, we predict the $^3$He+$d$ clustering in the excited state as well as the mirror state of $^5$He with $^3$H+$d$. For $^{6-9}$Li, various combinations of the clusters are obtained in the ground and excited states, and the superposition of these basis states reproduces the observed energy spectra. For $^9$Li, we predict the linear-chain states consisting of various cluster configurations at 10--13 MeV of the excitation energy., Comment: 23 pages, 19 figures

Understanding nuclear structure, reactions, and the properties of neutron stars from \textit{ab initio} calculations from the nucleon degrees of freedom has always been a primary goal of nuclear physics, in which the microscopic nuclear force serves as the fundamental input. So far, the Weinberg chiral nuclear force, first proposed by the Nobel laureate Weinberg, has become the \textit{de facto} standard input for nuclear \textit{ab initio} studies. However, compared to their non-relativistic counterparts, relativistic \textit{ab initio} calculations, which describe better nuclear observables, have only begun. The lack of modern relativistic nucleon-nucleon interactions is an important issue restricting their development. In this work, we briefly review the development and status of the Weinberg chiral nuclear force, as well as its limitations. We further present a concise introduction to the relativistic chiral nuclear force, show its description of the scattering phase shifts and observables such as differential cross sections, and demonstrate its unique features. The measurement of momentum correlations of identical pions serves as a fundamental tool for probing the space-time properties of the particle emitting source created in high-energy collisions. Recent experimental results have shown that, in pp collisions, the size of the one-dimensional primordial source depends on the transverse mass (\mt) of hadron pairs, following a common scaling behavior, similar to that observed in Pb--Pb collisions. In this work, a systematic study of the \pipi source function and correlation function is performed using the multiphase transport model (AMPT) to understand the properties of the emitting source created in high multiplicity pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV. The \mt scaling behavior and pion emission source radii measured by ALICE experiment can be well described the model with sub-nucleon structure. These studies shed new light on the understanding of the effective size of the \pipi emission source and on studying the intensity interferometry in small systems with a transport model., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures

I consider the so-called nuclear polarization correction to the 1S-levels in light to intermediate muonic atoms. An easy to use recipe to compute it is given. The calculation includes the effect of the nucleon polarization, i.e. the contribution from inelastic states in the hadronic range, and Coulomb corrections beyond the leading logarithm approximation to both nuclear and nucleon polarization. Short-range correlations (SRCs) are a universal feature of nuclear structure. A wide range of measurements, primarily using electron scattering, have revealed SRC properties, such as their abundance in different nuclei, as well as the strong preference for proton-neutron pairing over proton-proton or neutron-neutron pairing. Despite the inherent complexity of many-body systems, a number of the salient features of electron scattering measurements are described by a simple, factorized theory called Generalized Contact Formalism. A key element of this theory, the factorization of the interaction with a hard probe, has yet to be tested. An experiment conducted at Jefferson Lab in 2021 collected data from scattering a tagged photon beam, with an energy up to 10 GeV, from several nuclear targets, measuring final state particles in the large-acceptance GlueX spectrometer. In this paper, we propose a test of probe factorization by verifying measuring cross section ratios sensitive to proton-proton pair prevalence and relative SRC abundances in $^4$He and $^{12}$C. The "imaging-by-smashing" technique has been developed recently in relativistic nuclear collisions. By smashing heavy nuclei at RHIC and the LHC and analyzing the anisotropic expansion (flow) of the final state produced particles, unique information on the structure of the collided nuclei has been obtained. Existing efforts primarily focus on the colliding mode of heavy nuclei collisions. In contrast, nuclear structure studies with collisions of light nuclei and the fixed target mode, despite their significant impact and broad interest, have not been thoroughly explored. In this Letter, we investigate the $\alpha$-clustering signature of $^{20}$Ne and $^{16}$O in the fixed-target $^{208}$Pb--$^{20}$Ne and $^{208}$Pb--$^{16}$O collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 68.5 GeV, using the parton transport model AMPT. The results of two- and four-particle cumulants of anisotropic flow demonstrate a robust $\alpha$-clustering signature that persists regardless of the complex dynamic evolution of the created systems. This study highlights the significant impact of the LHCb SMOG (SMOG2) project in discovering the $\alpha$-clustering signature of light nuclei at relativistic energies., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

We have extended {\tt MadGraph5\_aMC@NLO} capabilities by implementing computations for asymmetric hadron-hadron collisions, including proton-nucleus, pion-hadron or nucleus-nucleus collisions in order to obtain a tool for automated perturbative computations of cross sections (or ratios of cross sections) in asymmetric reactions at next-to-leading (NLO) order in $\alpha_S$ in collinear factorisation. This tool, like the original symmetric version of \texttt{MadGraph5\_aMC@NLO}, automatically computes cross sections for different factorisation and renormalisation scales and PDFs provided by the {\tt LHAPDF} library, thereby allowing for an easy assessment of the associated theoretical uncertainties. In this paper, we present the validation of our code using $W$ and $Z$ boson production in $p$Pb collisions and Drell-Yan-pair production in $\pi W$ collisions. We also illustrate the capabilities of the framework by providing cross section and nuclear modification factors with their uncertainties for the production of $W$ and $Z$ bosons, charm and bottom quarks as well as associated production of $b\bar b+H^0$ in $p$Pb collisions at the LHC., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures

We investigate the charmed meson spectrum using a constituent quark model (CQM) with one-loop corrections applied to the one-gluon exchange (OGE) potential. The study aims to understand if these one-loop corrections sufficiently account for the charmed meson spectrum observed experimentally, without invoking exotic configurations like tetraquarks. Within this model, charmed mesons' masses are computed, comparing theoretical predictions to experimental data. The results suggest that the model, with one-loop OGE corrections, generally reproduces mass splittings and level ordering observed for charmed mesons. Discrepancies, particularly in P-wave states, are addressed by incorporating higher-order interaction terms. The findings emphasize that while the traditional quark model is limited in fully describing charmed mesons, enhanced potential terms may bridge the gap with experimental observations. The parity-violating asymmetry, including leading-order QED corrections to the Coulomb potential, is calculated non-perturbatively by solving the Dirac equation. At GeV collision energies and forward scattering angles, QED effects enhance the asymmetry by approximately 5% for the recently measured nuclei 27Al, 48Ca, and 208Pb. The corrections result in a shift of the estimated neutron radius, leading to an increase in the inferred neutron skin thicknesses of these nuclei and, thus, to the pressure neutrons feel around nuclear saturation density., Comment: Submitted for publication

The search of reactions with nucleon charge-exchange was performed on the FRAGM fragment-separator of the TWAC accelerator complex at fragmentation of carbon nuclei with an energy of 300 MeV/nucleon on a thin beryllium target. The experimental setup, located at an angle of 3.5 degrees to the incident beam, had high momentum resolution. Differential cross sections were measured for $^{11}$Be, $^{12}$B and $^{12}$Be as function of the nuclei momentum. The experimental data were compared with theoretical predictions of various models of nucleus-nucleus interactions and other experimental results. Measurements of nucleon charge exchange processes in this energy region was carried out for the first time. New results were obtained to test theoretical models of nucleus-nucleus interactions.

This study presents a detailed analysis of longitudinal flow decorrelations in light ion collisions at both Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and Large Hadron Collider(LHC) energies, focusing on various \textit{ab-initio} models of oxygen structure. We identify that the correlator $V_{2\Delta}$ effectively differentiates between the variational Monte Carlo (VMC) structure and other models, such as Nuclear Lattice Effective Field Theory (NLEFT) and the Projected Generator Coordinate Method (PGCM), revealing similar behaviors between the latter two. By utilizing the isolated non-spherical components, we highlight significant negative contributions in the structure generated by VMC compared to the other configurations. Additionally, we show that employing decorrelation $r_2$ to mitigate non-flow effects proves beneficial in identifying various modeled structures. We further examine flow decorrelations across different systems, including d+Au and O+O collisions at 200 GeV, as well as Ne+Ne and O+O collisions at 6.37 TeV, indicating a hierarchy in decorrelations that underscores the complexity of these interactions. Our findings emphasize that the role of asymmetry in d+Au collisions and its impact on flow correlations is mitigated by the correlator $V_{2\Delta} (\eta, \eta_{\text{ref}} )$. Additionally, our analysis of flow angle decorrelations shows diverse distributions of $\cos(2\Delta\psi_2)$ vs. overall flow magnitude in d+Au collisions compared to those in other collision systems, as indicated by the mean value of $\cos(2\Delta\psi_2)$., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures

The electron cooler of the CRYRING@ESR storage ring at the GSI-FAIR accelerator complex is a unique instrument, which not only provides beam cooling of the stored ions, but also serves as a low-energy electron target for Dielectronic Recombination experiments. The minimisation of vacuum contamination and the response to rapid energy changes are key requirements of the cooler in electron target mode. Therefore, a test bench was prepared to study the outgassing behaviour of the electron gun components and a setup was constructed to evaluate the drift-electrode-modulation of the acceleration voltage of the cooler. The vacuum studies showed that the electron gun cathode was severely malfunctioning and resulted in its replacement. Radon-222 is a limiting background in many leading dark matter and low energy neutrino experiments. One way to mitigate Radon-222 is to fill external experimental components with a clean cover gas such as N2. At the SNOLAB facility in Canada, the 222Rn concentration in the cover gas systems of the experiments are monitored using a radon assay board developed by the SNO collaboration. To improve the sensitivity of N2 assays, a new trapping mechanism based on activated charcoal has been developed. The trap was purified and tested at SNOLAB. The methods for determining the efficiency, background, and sensitivity of the trap were described. Additionally, as part of the efficiency measurement, a radon calibration source was developed and characterized.

The performance of Hamamatsu 8" photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) of the type used in the SuperNEMO neutrinoless double-beta decay experiment (R5912-MOD), is investigated as a function of exposure to helium (He) gas. Two PMTs were monitored for over a year, one exposed to varying concentrations of He, and the other kept in standard atmospheric conditions as a control. Both PMTs were exposed to light signals generated by a Bi-207 radioactive source that provided consistent large input PMT signals similar to those that are typical of the SuperNEMO experiment. The energy resolution of PMT signals corresponding to 1 MeV energy scale determined from the Bi-207 decay spectrum, shows a negligible degradation with He exposure; however the rate of after-pulsing shows a clear increase with He exposure, which is modelled and compared to diffusion theory. A method for reconstructing the partial pressure of He within the PMT and a method for determining the He breakdown point, are introduced. The implications for long-term SuperNEMO operations are briefly discussed.

To quantify the universal properties of chiral phase transition in (2+1)-flavor QCD, we use an improved, renormalized order parameter for the chiral symmetry breaking. We construct ratios of this divergence-free order parameter from its values for different pairs of light quark masses. From this, we determine in a parameter-independent manner, the chiral phase transition temperature $T_c$ and the associated critical exponent $\delta$ of the universality class. Polarization-analyzed small-angle neutron scattering (PASANS) is an advanced technique that enables the selective investigation of magnetic scattering phenomena in magnetic materials and distinguishes coherent scattering obscured by incoherent backgrounds, making it particularly valuable for cutting-edge research. The successful implementation of PASANS in China was achieved for the first time at the newly commissioned Very Small Angle Neutron Scattering (VSANS) instrument at the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS). This technique employs a combination of a double-V cavity supermirror polarizer and a radio frequency (RF) neutron spin flipper to manipulate the polarization of the incident neutrons. The scattered neutron polarization is stably analyzed by a specially designed $\textit{in-situ}$ optical pumping $^{3}$He neutron spin filter, which covers a spatially symmetric scattering angle coverage of about 4.8 $^{\circ}$. A comprehensive PASANS data reduction method, aimed at pulsed neutron beams, has been established and validated with a silver behenate powder sample, indicating a maximum momentum transfer coverage of approximately 0.25 {\AA} $^{-1}$.

We present results from a high precision experimental study of the nuclear modification of the longitudinal ($F_L$) to transverse ($F_1$) structure function ratio for bound nucleons in the resonance region. The inclusive electron scattering cross sections were measured in Jefferson Lab Experimental Hall C on carbon and deuterium nuclei for a large range of kinematics, allowing for separations of the longitudinal and transverse structure functions to be performed at a range of four-momentum transfer values $0.5 \le Q^2 \le$ 3.75 GeV$^2$. In contrast to the significant body of measurements of the nuclear modification of the $F_2$ structure function in the deep inelastic scattering region, there is very little on $F_L$ and $R = F_L / 2xF_1$ in the region of the nucleon resonances. In this paper we present measurements of the nuclear effect on $R$ for $^{12}$C ($R_C$) relative to deuterium ($R_D$). These results indicate regions in which in $R_C>R_D$, requiring that the nuclear modifications be different in all three structure functions, $F_2$, $F_1$ and $F_L$., Comment: to be published in PRL

A nonperturbatively-improved, symmetry-preserving approximation to the quantum field equations relevant in calculations of meson masses and interactions is used to deliver predictions for all distribution functions (DFs) of the ground state pion, $\pi_0$, and its first radial excitation, $\pi_1$, viz. valence, glue, and sea. Regarding Mellin moments of the valence DFs, the $m=0,1$ moments in both states are identical; but for each $m\geq 2$, that in the $\pi_0$ is greater than its partner in the $\pi_1$. Working with such information, pointwise reconstructions of the hadron-scale $\pi_{0,1}$ valence DFs are developed. The predicted $\pi_0$ valence DF is consistent with extant results. The $\pi_1$ valence DF is novel: it possesses three-peaks, with the central maximum partnered by secondary peaks on either side, each separated from the centre by a zero: the zeroes lie at $x\approx 0.2,0.8$ and the secondary peaks at $x\approx 0.1,0.9$. Evolution to $\zeta =3.2\,$GeV, a typical scale for nonperturbative calculations, is accomplished using an evolution scheme for parton DFs that is all-orders exact. At this higher scale, differences between the $\pi_{0,1}$ valence DFs remain significant, but analogous differences between glue and sea DFs are far smaller. This analysis shows that, owing to constraints imposed by chiral symmetry and the pattern by which it is broken in Nature, there are noticeable differences between the structural properties of the pion ground state and its radial excitations., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, 4 tables

The half-life of $^{39}$Ar is measured using the DEAP-3600 detector located 2 km underground at SNOLAB. In 2016-2020, DEAP-3600 used a target mass of (3269 $\pm$ 24) kg of liquid argon distilled from the atmosphere in a direct-detection dark matter search. Such an argon mass also enables direct measurements of argon isotope properties. The decay of $^{39}$Ar in DEAP-3600 is the dominant source of triggers by two orders of magnitude, ensuring high statistics and making DEAP-3600 well-suited for measuring this isotope's half-life. Use of the pulse-shape discrimination technique in DEAP-3600 allows for powerful discrimination between nuclear recoils and electron recoils, resulting in the selection of a clean sample of $^{39}$Ar decays. Observing over a period of 3.4 years, the $^{39}$Ar half-life is measured to be $(302 \pm 8_{\rm stat} \pm 6_{\rm sys})$ years. This new direct measurement suggests that the half-life of $^{39}$Ar may be significantly longer than the accepted value, with potential implications for measurements using this isotope's half-life as input., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

Fusion excitation functions for $^{19}$O and $^{19}$F + $^{12}$C were simultaneously measured along with $^{20}$O + $^{12}$C using the active-target detector MuSIC@Indiana. Examination of the cross-section just above the barrier reveals a significant suppression of fusion for the $^{19}$O + $^{12}$C system at E$_{c.m.}$~12 MeV. This suppression may be due to the formation of a transient $^{18}$O-n-$^{12}$C molecule-like complex favored at a particular angular momentum. We discuss exclusive $\phi$-meson electroproduction off the proton near threshold within the GPD factorization framework. We propose the `threshold approximation' in which only the leading term of the conformal partial wave expansion of the meson production amplitudes is kept in both the quark and gluon exchange channels. We test the validity of this approximation to next-to-leading order in QCD and demonstrate the strong sensitivity of the cross section to the gluon and strangeness gravitational form factors. We also perform realistic event generator simulations both for Jefferson Lab and EIC kinematics and demonstrate the capabilities of future facilities for measuring near-threshold $\phi$ electroproduction., Comment: 26 pages

In this paper, we will briefly review the recent progress on neutron correlations and clustering in neutron-rich nuclei from quasi-free scattering experiments. The quasi-free ($p$, $pn$) reaction was measured for Borromean nuclei $^{11}$Li, $^{14}$Be, and $^{17}$B. A surprisingly small $s$-wave component was found for $^{17}$B, revealing a weak neutron halo in $^{17}$B, and the comparative study of the three nuclei shows the surface localization of dineutron correlation and its universality in Borromean nuclei. The two-neutron emission of $^{16}$Be was also studied, finding strong dineutron correlation in $^{16}$Be(g.s.) but weak correlation in $^{16}$Be($2^+$). Two missing-mass measurements using $^{4}$He($^{8}$He, $^{8}$Be) and $^{8}$He($p$, $p\alpha$) reactions provided evidence for the $^{4}n$ resonance, but the $^{3}n$ resonance was not supported by the recent experiment employing the $t(t,^3$He)$^3n$ charge-exchange reaction. The $\mit{\Upsilon}(\mathrm{2}S)$ and $\mit{\Upsilon}(\mathrm{3}S)$ production cross-sections are measured relative to that of the $\mit{\Upsilon}(\mathrm{1}S)$ meson, as a function of charged-particle multiplicity in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $13$ TeV. The measurement uses data collected by the LHCb experiment in 2018 corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2 $\text{fb}^{-1}$. Both the $\mit{\Upsilon}(\mathrm{2}S)$-to-$\mit{\Upsilon}(\mathrm{1}S)$ and $\mit{\Upsilon}(\mathrm{3}S)$-to-$\mit{\Upsilon}(\mathrm{1}S)$ cross-section ratios are found to decrease significantly as a function of event multiplicity, with the $\mit{\Upsilon}(\mathrm{3}S)$-to-$\mit{\Upsilon}(\mathrm{1}S)$ ratio showing a steeper decline towards high multiplicity. Beta-delayed proton emission in the lower half of the sd-shell will involve deformed nuclei. We derive the normalized matrix element connecting emission of one particle from an initial rotational nuclear state to another final rotating state, and we extract selection rules involving the $K$ quantum number. The initial state is approximated as having a core identical to the final nuclear state. The formalism is then directly applicable to $\beta^+$-delayed proton decays of even-$Z$, odd-$N$ nuclei or $\beta^-$-delayed neutron decays of odd-$Z$, even $N$ nuclei. These beta-decay results are compared to the outcomes of possible transfer reactions. In this work we investigate the two-neutron decay of 13Li and of the excited states of 11Li populated via one-proton removal from 14Be and 12Be, respectively. A phenomenological model is used to describe the decay of 11Li and 13Li. While the first one displays important sequential components, the second one appears dominated by the direct two-neutron decay. A microscopic three-body model is used to extract information on the spatial configuration of the emitted neutrons before the decay and shows that the average distance between the neutrons increases going from 11Li to 13Li.

The proton radius puzzle remains a key challenge in modern physics, highlighting both the precision and limitations of current experimental and theoretical approaches. Recent studies, such as those by Xiong et al. and Bezginov et al., have consistently found a smaller proton radius of about 0.84 femtometers, in line with muonic hydrogen measurements, but discrepancies with earlier electron-proton scattering and atomic hydrogen spectroscopy persist. These unresolved differences reveal systematic errors or limitations in existing theoretical frameworks, as pointed out by Arrington and Sick. The divergence between results from muonic and electronic hydrogen measurements remains unexplained, with contributions from both experimental uncertainties and theoretical gaps. To address these challenges, a coordinated approach is needed-focused on reducing systematic uncertainties through advanced experimental setups, like improved scattering experiments at Jefferson Lab, and developing new theoretical models, such as those proposed by Alar\'{c}on et al. and Lin et al. Integrating experimental precision with theoretical rigor offers the best path toward resolving this enduring puzzle and providing deeper insights into the fundamental forces of nature.

Pontecorvo reactions are rare antinucleon annihilation processes that are forbidden on free nucleons but allowed on nucleons bound within nuclei. The interest in studying this phenomenon lies in its potential to provide insights into the annihilation mechanism and, particularly, the short-distance dynamics between nucleons within the nucleus. Some measurements were performed in the past at CERN's Low Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR) using antiprotons annihilating on a deuterium target. However, no data exist for targets consisting of three nucleons, such as $^3\text{He}$ or $^3\text{H}$. The measurement of the rate of the process $\overline{p} \, ^3\text{He} \rightarrow p + n$ would allow for distinguishing between different theoretical models whose predictions vary by 1-2 orders of magnitude. The ASACUSA collaboration is studying the feasibility of performing this measurement at CERN's ELENA-AD. A preliminary design of a simple measurement apparatus, utilizing plastic scintillators and degrader layers, is presented, together with Monte Carlo simulations assessing its efficiency in measuring the branching ratios of the aforementioned reaction and rejecting background from more probable typical antiproton annihilations in the target.

Targeted alpha-particle therapy (TAT) employs alpha-emitting radionuclides conjugated to tumor-targeting molecules to deliver localized radiation to cancer cells, showing great promise in treating metastatic cancers. Among these radionuclides, Actinium-225 ($^{225}$Ac, t$_{1/2}$ = 9.9 days) has emerged as a clinically promising candidate. Its decay chain generates four successive alpha emissions, resulting in highly localized and effective cytotoxic damage to cancer cells when delivered to tumor sites. However, the assumption of complete retention of $^{225}$Ac and its radioactive daughters at these target sites is often inaccurate. The nuclear recoil effect can lead to off-target distribution and unintended toxicity. Our results revealed distinct spectral differences between radiolabeled cells and reference samples, demonstrating [$^{225}$Ac]Ac-crown-TATE uptake by AR42J cells. Detection of $^{213}$Po, one of the $^{225}$Ac decay daughters, highlighted partial retention and release of decay products from cells, providing information on intracellular retention and daughter redistribution. Geant4 simulations confirmed the alignment of experimental data with theoretical models, validating the method's accuracy. This study establishes a direct alpha spectroscopy approach for investigating $^{225}$Ac and its daughters' behavior in cells and offers a powerful tool for microdosimetry estimation.

Neutrinoless double-beta decay is a nuclear decay, given as $(A,Z) \rightarrow (A, Z+2) +2e^{-}$, with deep consequences for the understanding of our universe. A strong experimental program is underway to search for this transition with many proposed experiments using different technologies. In this article the LEGEND experiment, which uses $^{76}$Ge as the isotope of interest, will be described. We will discuss both the first stage, LEGEND-200, which is now taking data at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso of INFN in Italy, and the future stage, LEGEND-1000. LEGEND-200 has analyzed a first sample of data (48.3 kg$\cdot$yr) collected from March 2023 to February 2024 with a background index not far away from its goal of 2$\times$10$^{-4}$ cnts/(keV$\cdot$kg$\cdot$yr). Combining the LEGEND-200 data with those of \textsc{Gerda}\ and \textsc{Majorana Demonstrator}\ one obtains a sensitivity on the half-life of 0$\nu\beta\beta$ decay in $^{76}$Ge of $T_{1/2} > $ 2.8 $\times$ 10$^{26}$ yr at 90\% C.L. and a limit on $T_{1/2} > $ 1.9 $\times$ 10$^{26}$ yr at 90\% C.L., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

Investigating batteries while they operate allows researchers to track the inner electrochemical processes involved in working conditions. This study describes the first neutron radiography investigation of a lead-acid battery. A custom-designed neutron friendly lead-acid cell and casing is developed and studied operando during electrochemical cycling, in order to observe the activity within the electrolyte and at the electrodes. This experimental work is coupled with Monte Carlo simulations of neutron transmittance. Details of cell construction, data collection and data analysis are presented. A simple and fast radiochemical procedure for the sequential extraction of U, Np and Pu from small-volume seawater samples ($<10$ L) is presented. The method has been developed and optimized for the final determination of $^{236}$U, $^{237}$Np, $^{239}$Pu and $^{240}$Pu by Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS). It is based on the use of $^{242}$Pu as tracer for both Np and Pu isotopes. Samples are pre-concentrated by Fe(OH)$_2$ co-precipitation. TEVA and UTEVA resins are used in a very simplified way for the final purification of the Pu+Np and U fractions, respectively. The radiochemical yields of the three elements have been investigated in detail by alpha spectrometry (AS) and gamma spectrometry (GS). The obtained results indicate high and robust chemical yields for the three elements and similar ones for Pu and Np. Furthermore, the use of $^{242}$Pu as tracer for $^{237}$Np is validated by analyzing a reference seawater sample (IAEA-443) by radiometric techniques. We demonstrated that, if chemicals are properly chosen, processed blank levels can be kept at the same level of the extremely low detection limits that can be achieved by AMS ($10^5 - 10^6$ atoms/sample). The procedure is finally applied for the study by AMS of a reference seawater sample from the Mediterranean Sea (IAEA-418).

The neutron-neutron ($nn$) correlation function has been measured in 25 MeV/u $^{124}$Sn+$^{124}$Sn reactions. Using the Lednick\'y-Lyuboshitz approach, the $nn$ scattering length and effective range ($f_{0}^{nn}$, $d_{0}^{nn}$), as well as the reduced space-time size $R^{(0)}$ of the neutron emission source are simultaneously extracted as ($18.9^{+1.3}_{-1.2}$ fm, $1.9^{+1.3}_{-1.0}$ fm) and $4.12 \pm 0.12$ fm, respectively. The measured $nn$ scattering length is consistent with the results obtained in the low-energy scattering $^{2}{\rm H}(\pi^{-},\gamma)2n$, indicating heavy-ion collisions can serve as an effective approach for measuring $nn$ interactions and further investigating the charge symmetry breaking of nuclear force. The space-time size extracted from momentum-gated correlation functions exhibits clear dependence on the pair momentum, with $R^{(0)}=2.8 \pm 0.1 $ fm and $4.9 \pm 0.2$ fm being determined for the high and low momentum neutrons, respectively.
