Sustainable Development Goals developed by the United Nations recognize that “ending poverty must go hand-in-hand with strategies that build economic growth and address a range of social needs including education, health, equality and job opportunities, while tackling climate change and working to preserve our ocean and forests” (United Nations, 2019). This can be faced from different strategies, but a common factor to some of them deal with the use, reuse and treatment of the water in a sustainable way. Additionally, microalgae biotechnology is of increasing importance and a central application concerns the treatment of wastewater. Taken all of this together, microalgae-based processes for wastewater treatment become a research field of great interest. In this regard, the present Thesis faced this challenge from two points of view: aquaculture wastewater treatment and urban wastewater treatment plants. The main objective of the present Thesis has been gaining deep knowledge on new sustainable technologies for wastewater treatment, developing new solutions based on microalgae. In order to achieve this objective, this Thesis is structured in two parts: a experimental part corresponding to microalgae-based aquaculture water treatment, which is described in Chapter 2 and Chapter 3; and a second part related to the development of mathematical models for enhancing the implementation of microalgae-based processes in urban wastewater treatment plants, described in Chapter 4 and 5. The suitability of microalgae-based wastewater treatment systems in aquaculture is studied at laboratory scale, being the main objective of this study evaluate how the quality of the water taken from an aquaculture system affected the growth rate and nutrient removal efficiency of two well-known microalgae strains. Going further, a co-cultivation of these two species of microalgae was carried out also for aquaculture water treatment, to develop a more reliable and robust treatment contrasted to monocultures. This approach was tested at laboratory-scale and then compared to a co-culture at pilot-scale in an open thin-layer photobioreactor. In order to determine the state-of-the-art of microalgae mathematical modelling a review has been carried out to define the weaknesses and strengths of current models. Amongst all models already developed, only a few number are integrated models although the integration of microalgae-based processes in plant wide models is paramount for spreading its implementation at full-scale. As a result of that, the implementation of a microalgae model in the already existing Plant Wide Model library (PWM) has been proposed. After that, a validation of the model is necessary to assure its correct use in model-based assessment of microalgae processes in WWTP. The Thesis concludes with a chapter gathering the most significant conclusions, bibliography consulted for its development, and an appendix that includes a detailed description of the mathematical modelling methodology used. Los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible desarrollados por las Naciones Unidas recogen que "poner fin a la pobreza debe ir de la mano de estrategias que desarrollen el crecimiento económico y aborden necesidades sociales, incluyendo la educación, la salud, la igualdad y las oportunidades laborales, al tiempo que se aborda el cambio climático y se trabaja para preservar los océanos y bosques” (United Nations, 2019). Estos objetivos pueden ser abordadodos empleando diferentes estrategias, siendo un factor común a parte de ellos el uso, la reutilización y el tratamiento del agua residual de manera sostenible. Asimismo, la biotecnología de microalgas es un campo de estudio cada vez más relevante, siendo una aplicación central del mismo el tratamiento de aguas residuales. Como resultado, los procesos basados en microalgas para el tratamiento de aguas residuales se han convertido en un campo de investigación de gran interés. En este sentido, la presente Tesis ha enfrentado este reto desde dos puntos de vista: el tratamiento de aguas residuales en la acuicultura y en las plantas de tratamiento de aguas residuales urbanas. El objetivo principal de la presente Tesis ha sido desarrollar un conocimiento sólido sobre nuevas tecnologías sostenibles para el tratamiento de aguas residuales, desarrollando nuevas soluciones basadas en el empleo de microalgas. Para lograr este objetivo, esta Tesis está estructurada en dos partes: una parte experimental correspondiente al tratamiento de aguas de acuicultura basado en microalgas, que se describe en el Capítulo 2 y el Capítulo 3; y una segunda parte relacionada con el desarrollo de modelos matemáticos para mejorar la implementación a escala industrial de procesos basados en microalgas en plantas de tratamiento de aguas residuales urbanas, descrito en los Capítulos 4 y 5. La idoneidad de los sistemas de tratamiento de aguas residuales basadas en microalgas en su empleo en acuicultura se ha estudiado a escala laboratorio, siendo el objetivo principal evaluar cómo la calidad del agua tratada de un sistema de acuicultura afecta a la tasa de crecimiento y a la eficiencia de eliminación de nutrientes de dos especies ampliamente conocidas de microalgas. Posteriormente, se utilizó un co-cultivo de estas dos especies de microalgas, también para el tratamiento de agua procedente de la acuicultura, para poder desarrollar un sistema de tratamiento más robusto en comparación con los monocultivos. Esta solución se testeó a escala de laboratorio y luego se comparó con un co-cultivo a escala piloto llevado a cabo en un fotobiorreactor abierto. Para determinar el estado del arte del modelo matemático de las microalgas, se ha realizado una revisión bibliográfica para definir las debilidades y fortalezas de los modelos desarrollados actualmente. Entre ellos, solo un pequeño número son modelos integrados, a pesar de que la integración de los procesos basados en microalgas en los modelos de planta completa es primordial para aumentar su implementación a gran escala. Para enfrentar este reto, se implementó un modelo matemático describiendo las transformaciones de las microalgas en la biblioteca de modelos Plant Wide Model (PWM) ya existente. Por último, es necesario realizar una validación del modelo desarrollado para asegurar su correcto funcionamiento para su uso en la evaluación de la implementación de estos procesos a escala industrial en estaciones depuradoras de aguas residuales. La Tesis concluye con un capítulo que recoge las conclusiones más significativas, la bibliografía consultada para su desarrollo y un apéndice que incluye una descripción detallada de la metodología de modelado matemático utilizada.

International audience; Natural and artificial directional selection in cosmopolitan and autochthonous livestock and wild relative populations have shaped their genomes defining the level of variability and determining selective sweeps as final adaptation to different environmental conditions and production systems. In this study we analyzed the genetic variability and selection signatures in 19 European local pig breeds sampled from 7 countries (Croatia, France, Germany, Italy, Lithuania, Portugal, Serbia, Slovenia and Spain) (Alentejana, Apulo-Calabrese, Basque, Bísara, Majorcan Black, Black Slavonian, Casertana, Cinta Senese, Gascon, Krskopolje, Lithuanian indigenous wattle, Lithuanian White Old Type, Mora Romagnola, Moravka, Nero Siciliano, Sarda, Schwäbisch-Hällisches Schwein, Swallow-Bellied Mangalitsa and Turopolje), 3 cosmopolitan Italian breeds (Large White, Landrace and Duroc) and Italian wild boars. For each population, we prepared DNA pools using equimolar DNA from 30 to 35 animals. Whole-genome 150-bp paired-end sequencing was carried out on an Illumina HiSeq machine. More than 18.4 billion of reads were obtained and mapped on the Sscrofa11.1 genome version with BWA, obtaining a mean depth of sequencing of 42X, respectively. CRISP, coupled to an ad hoc bioinformatic pipeline, was used to detect more than 30 million of high-quality variants (18% not included in dbSNP yet). Variant annotation, carried out with VEP, highlighted that the 0.34% of the autosomal SNPs impacted genes at the protein level. Selection signature analyses (Fst and the Pooled Heterozygosity) highlighted more than 400 sweep regions distributed along the 18 porcine autosomes and scaffolds. Some of these genome regions harboured major genes affecting body shape/size (e.g., NR6A1, PLAG1, LCORL and CASP10), coat color (e.g., KIT, MC1R) and growth/fatness (e.g., MC4R), providing a first global variability analysis of European Sus scrofa populations. El area de estudio abarca localidades del Canon del Zopilote y Carrizal de Bravo, pertenecientes a la cuenca del rio Balsas, Guerrero, Mexico. El trabajo de campo se desarrollo de marzo de 2011 a marzo de 2013. Se establecieron seis parcelas (6 x 1,000 m 2 =6,000 m 2 ) en cada tipo de vegetacion a lo largo del gradiente de altitud (450 a 2,800 m) para el muestreo de especies arboreas, arbustivas y herbaceas. La riqueza total en el gradiente altitudinal fue de 310 especies incluidas en cinco tipos de vegetacion (bosque tropical caducifolio: BTC, palmar, bosque de Quercus : BQ , bosque de Pinus : BP y bosque mesofilo de montana: BMM). Se observo un patron de U, donde la riqueza y diversidad total de especies fue mayor en los extremos del gradiente altitudinal y menor en la parte intermedia. La tasa de reemplazo de especies (diversidad beta) fue de 100 % en BTC y BMM, los cuales se ubican en el extremo inferior y superior del gradiente de altitud estudiado. Las variables ambientales con mayor relacion con los valores de riqueza y diversidad de especies son las variables edaficas (contenido de arena, fosforo y capacidad de intercambio cationico: CIC) y la altitud.

A trial was performed to compare the effects of different dietary sources of MUFA on the fatty acid (FA) composition, lipid metabolism, and gene transcription in different tissues of Iberian pigs. Twentyseven Iberian male pigs of 28 kg live weight (LW) were divided in 2 groups and fed with 1 of 2 isocaloric diets a standard diet with carbohydrates as energy source (CH) and a diet enriched with high-oleic sunflower oil (HO). Ham adipose tissue was sampled by biopsy at 44 and 70 kg LW. At 110 kg LW pigs were slaughtered and backfat, loin, and liver tissues were sampled. Animals of the HO group showed higher MUFA content and lower SFA in all the analyzed tissues (P < 0.001). These main effects were established early during the treatment and increased only slightly along time. Small diet effects were also detected on PUFA, which showed differences according to sampling time, tissue, and lipid fraction. Effects of diet on gene expression were explored with a combined approach analyzing adipose tissue transcriptome and quantifying the expression of a panel of key genes implicated in lipogenesis and lipid metabolism processes in backfat, muscle, and liver. Backfat transcriptome showed small effects of diet on gene expression, in number and magnitude. According to the posterior probabilities (PP) of the probe-specific expression differences between dietary groups (PP < 0.01), 37 genes were considered differentially expressed (DE). Gene ontology allowed relating them with several biological functions including lipid metabolic processes. Quantitative PCR confirmed several DE genes in adipose tissue (RXRG, LEP, and ME1; P < 0.0001, P < 0.05, and P < 0.0001, respectively), but no DE gene was found in loin or liver tissues. Joint results agree with a metabolic adjustment of adipose tissue FA levels by the subtle effect of the diet on the regulation of several lipid metabolism pathways, mainly FA oxidation and prostanoid synthesis, with LEP, RXRG, and PTGS2 genes playing mayor roles. © 2014 American Society of Animal Science. En Galicia, los suelos presentan en general baja fertilidad por lo que se aconseja realizar labores de fertilización para favorecer la productividad de los mismos. En los últimos tiempos además del uso de fertilizantes inorgánicos se está fomentando el empleo de fertilizantes de tipo orgánico, como son los lodos procedentes de depuradora urbana. Para la aplicación de los lodos al suelo estos tienen que ser sometidos a tratamientos de estabilización y dependiendo del tipo de tratamiento el lodo va a presentar diferentes características fisico-químicas, lo que determina su capacidad como fertilizante. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar el efecto del lodo de depuradora urbana tratado mediante digestión anaerobia, compostaje y secado térmico sobre los cambios químicos que se producen en el suelo, así como, la producción y la calidad de pasto en comparación con los tratamientos de control (no fertilización y fertilización mineral) en un sistema silvopastoral establecido en terreno agrícola abandonado repoblado con Fraxinus excelsior L. y donde se estableció una pradera artificial. Los resultados mostraron que el lodo compostado incrementó el pH y la cantidad de Ca extraído por el método BaCl2 del suelo y el abono mineral la concentración de Ca total. En el pasto, la fertilización orgánica e inorgánica mejoró la producción de pasto y el lodo anaeróbico incrementó la concentración de Ca. - In Galicia, soils have usually low fertility which makes advisable to fertilise to in order to increase understory productivity. In the last recent past the use of organic fertilisers is promoted like the municipal sewage sludge. It is compulsory to stabilise municipal sewage sludge in order to be used as fertilisers. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the inorganic fertiliser and municipal sewage sludge stabilised by anaerobic digestion, composting and pelletization on the pasture production and quality, as well as, the chemical changes that are produced in the soil in a silvopastoral system established in agricultural abandoned afforested with Fraxinus excelsior L. and where a mixture pasture was sown. The results showed that the contribution of composted sludge triggered an increase in pH and the amount of Ca extracted by the method BaCl2 soil and the mineral fertilizer increased the concentration of total Ca in soil. In pasture, organic and inorganic fertilisation improved the pasture production and the anaerobic sludge increased the concentration of Ca.

Los suelos del monte gallego son pobres y con fuerte tendencia a la acidez, por lo que se debe incrementar la fertilidad de los mismos para el establecimiento y desarrollo del arbolado y del pasto. Ésto se puede conseguir usando residuos orgánicos procedentes de depuradoras urbanas, los cuales incrementan la productividad potencial del pasto y del arbolado a bajo coste, si bien su empleo debe ser cuidadosamente valorado, ya que estos terrenos suelen presentar un pH ácido, en donde los metales pesados son más solubles, incrementándose la posibilidad de consumo por la planta y su llegada alhombre a través de la cadena trófica. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar el efecto residual del encalado y de la aplicación, en distintas fechas, de tres dosis de lodo de depuradora urbana sobre el suelo y crecimiento del arbolado en un sistema silvopastoral establecido en un terreno de monte repoblado con Pinus radiata D. Don. Los resultados obtenidos reflejaron que la aplicación combinada de cal y lodo incrementaron el pH del suelo y la capacidad de intercambio catiónico, produciendo una mejora del crecimiento del arbolado, que también se produce cuando la competencia pasto-arbolado se reduce al aplicar dosis bajas de lodo. - Soils of mountain areas are poor and with a strong acidic tendency. Fertility of these soils could be improved to obtain a good establishment and development of pasture throughout the use of organic residues like urban sewage sludge. The use of this organic fertilizer is a form to increase soil potential productivity at a low cost and to limit a pollutant effects. However, in Galicia forest lands, sewage sludge use must be carefully studied since these soils have acid pH in which heavy metals are more soluble and can cause plant uptake and reach human beings through trophic chain. The objective of this study was to evaluate the residual effect of the limestone and sewage sludge application, in three doses in different dates on pasture production and botanical composition, as well as the changes that take place in the chemical properties of the soil, in a silvopastoral system established in a forestland reforested with Pinus radiata D. Don. The results show that the combination of limestone amendments and high doses of sewage sludge caused an improvement of soil pH and the soil exchange capacity, which improve tree growth. By the contrary, the use of low doses of sewage sludge and no limestone also improve tree growth, due to the reduced competence tree-pasture.
