Their applications being widely investigated in cancer therapy, imaging, chemotherapy, photodynamic therapy (PDT), photothermal therapy (PTT), and tissue repair. The aim of our study was to assess the in vivo toxicity and changes in oxidative stress biomarkers in organs of animals treated with mesoporous PDA NPs modified with iron (MPDAFe NPs), coated with the cancer cell membrane and loaded with doxorubicin (DOX), and subsequently subjected to PTT.Methods: Liver and kidney homogenates were obtained from BALB/c nude mice with xenograft HepG2 human hepatoma cells, treated with iron modified mesoporous PDA nanoparticles, coated with the cancer cell membrane and loaded with doxorubicin (MPDAFe@DOX@Mem NPs), and subjected to PTT. These samples were used for histological evaluation and measurement of oxidative stress biomarkers, including total protein (TP), reduced glutathione (GSH), nitric oxide (NO), S-nitrosothiols (RSNO), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC), catalase (CAT), glutathione S-transferase (GST), and superoxide dismutase (SOD).Results: In the kidney, MPDAFe@DOX@Mem NPs in combination with PTT increased GSH (43%), TBARS (32%), and CAT (27%), while SOD decreased by 20% compared to the control group. Additionally, CAT activity in the liver increased by 79%.Conclusion: Significant differences in oxidative stress parameters and histological changes after administration with MPDAFe@DOX@Mem NPs and PTT were observed in the kidneys, showing more pronounced changes than the liver, indicating potential kidney toxicity. Our research provides insights into oxidative stress and possible toxic effects after in vivo administration of mesoporous PDA NPs combined with chemotherapy-photothermal therapy (CT-PTT), which is extremely important for their future applications in anticancer therapies. Abstract

Global food security will exist when all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life. Today, about 2 billion of the 7.96 billion people on Earth are food insecure. Food insecurity is still a challenge in Kenya despite different sectors' interventions in nutrition and agriculture. This study sought to identify programs and stakeholders who are influential on food security by analyzing farmers' participation in programs, the link between agriculture and nutrition goals, factors that influence the success of programs, and the impact of policy on food security. The study adopted a descriptive cross-sectional design using mixed methods of data collection. Qualitative data were obtained from thirty purposively selected stakeholders through focus group discussions and key informant interviews. The themes formed from the qualitative data were analyzed manually, and verbatim quotes were used to explain the findings. Additionally, two hundred and seventy-three structured questionnaires were administered to farmers to collect quantitative data. The data revealed that (75%) of farmers were beneficiaries of key programs. Pearson's chi-square test gave [x.sup.2](4, n=273)>=91.045, with a p-value of 0.000 which is less than 0.05, indicates a strong relationship between education level and farmers' awareness of key agricultural programs. The primary motivation in agriculture production was income generation, but the nutritional value of the food was overlooked. Poor collaboration among stakeholders was shown to not only result in unequal program coverage but also pose an obstacle in aligning agricultural programs with local nutrition demands. Moreover, although food and agriculture policies are in place, gaps exist in implementing and adhering to these policies. It was revealed that budget allocation to the agriculture sector is at (2.4 %) which is still a quarter way to the international commitment of (10%). Lastly, land ownership limitations hinder smallholder farmers' ability to meet income and nutrition needs, as approximately a third of those surveyed (n=136, 35.5%) reported owning less than 0.5 acres of land. It is, therefore, necessary to build the capacity to support smart agriculture, using technological methods to increase productivity on small land. Additionally, stakeholders must create policy strategies, collaboration and program distribution mechanisms to promote nutrition and agriculture to improve food security. The study compared the effects of LC and SH on serum and urine phosphate and calcium, and on hormones regulating mineral-bone metabolism.Patients and Methods: A prospective randomized crossover study included 34 patients with eGFR < 60 mL/min. A single oral dose of LC (1,000 mg) or SH (2,400 mg) was administered in random order 15 minutes after a standardized meal fortified with 5 g calcium carbonate. Serum calcium, phosphate, and parathormone were measured before and 3, 6, 12, and 24 hours after each medication. Bone alkaline phosphatase (BAP), sclerostin, calcitriol, and FGF-23 were measured at baseline and after 12 and 24 hours. A 24-hour calcium and phosphate excretion was measured after each drug.Results: Serum calcium increased 3 and 6 hours after SH then returned to baseline. After LC calcium was unchanged for up to 3 hours then transiently increased and eventually returned to baseline. The area under curve (AUC) of serum calcium for 12 hours after SH was larger than after LC (p=0.04). Serum phosphate decreased after each drug with a nadir 3 hours post-SH and 6 hours post-LC. AUC of serum phosphate was similar after both medications. PTH decreased transiently after both drugs. BAP did not change. FGF-23 was constant for the first 12 hours but later decreased after each drug.Conclusion: A 2,400 mg SH and 1,000 mg LC are similarly effective in lowering serum phosphate in CKD, but LC induce in less intestinal calcium absorption after a meal. Abstract

Robotic disassembly of hard disk drives during their recycling process is a promising technology with significant ecological importance and high economic profitability. However, the efficiency of the robotic disassembly of screws in the cost-efficient process using the robotic system in the selective compliance assembly robot arm configuration is highly dependent on the accuracy of positioning. In such a case, the robot works based on known screw positions without a visual control loop. The paper presents the generalised method of analysis of key factors influencing the process, starting from visual geometry analysis to mechanical setup accuracy. The formalised metrological analysis was performed on the base of the Monte-Carlo method to identify the key factors influencing the screw positioning accuracy. Abstract

This paper presents a quantitative model for magnetic field sensors based on the Matteucci effect in non-uniform magnetic fields. The Matteucci effect, observed in twisted amorphous wires, generates voltage pulses due to magnetization changes. The model describes non-uniformities by analyzing the effect of spatial gradients in the magnetic field and enables magnetic field gradient measurement. Experimental validation shows that the field gradient introduces an additional delay in re-magnetization, reflected as distinct forked voltage pulses. The proposed model allows for the improvement of sensor performance and extends the application of Matteucci-effect-based sensors to magnetic field mapping and non-destructive testing. Abstract

Measuring nonlinearity (linearity error) in high-resolution electronic balances, including microbalances, is challenging. Today's electronic balances are usually characterized by a small linearity error (with tolerance limits for nonlinearity specified by manufacturers in the order of several elementary divisions), and all criteria for measuring nonlinearity must meet or even exceed this tolerance limit. Linearity is determined over the full range of the balance at several measurement points (usually at least five points). The use of balances in the calibration of piston pipettes requires the determination of the linearity error within a very small working range. The paper describes a new method for testing the linearity of electronic balances used for the calibration of piston pipettes using the gravimetric method with small, constant mass increments, which corresponds to the process of calibrating piston pipettes. Studies have shown that the method of determining linearity using small mass increments gives more accurate results - yielding smaller linearity errors in the measuring range corresponding to pipette calibration. When incorporating the linearity component of the balance in the measurement uncertainty model for calibrating piston pipettes, the new method allows for reducing the uncertainty of pipette calibration. This is important for laboratories that calibrate pipettes, as it enables improvement in the calibration and measurement capability parameter, and for users of piston pipettes who receive pipettes with more accurate calibration. Deadweight piston gauges are vital for metrology and calibration, with their effective area traditionally determined through labour-intensive methods or precise geometric measurements. This paper introduces an extended cross-float method that simplifies effective area determination by avoiding detailed equilibrium point adjustments. The proposed method uses dynamic displacement data instead of static comparisons, potentially improving calibration effciency. Experiments using laser sensors revealed a clear link between fall rate variations and mass discrepancies, emphasising the need for consistent reference levels. While the extended method shows promise, further research is necessary to address the impact of variables like piston temperature, rotation speed, and air density, particularly for high-pressure and gaseous systems. Abstract

Morphology, structure and magnetic properties of nanocomposites of magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles and alginic acid (AA) are studied. Magnetite Fe3O4 nanoparticles and the nanoparticles capped with alginic acid exhibit very distinct properties. The chemical bonding between alginic acid and surface of magnetite nanoparticles results in recovery of surface magnetization. Abstract

ObjectivesChronic kidney disease (CKD) is common in HIV-infected individuals, and is associated with mortality in both the HIV-infected and general populations. Urinary markers of tubular injury have been associated with future kidney disease risk, but associations with mortality are unknown.MethodsWe evaluated the associations of urinary interleukin-18 (IL-18), liver fatty acid binding protein (L-FABP), kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1), neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) and the albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR) with 10-year, all-cause death in 908 HIV-infected women. Serum cystatin C was used to estimate the glomerular filtration rate (eGFRcys).ResultsThere were 201 deaths during 9269 person-years of follow-up. After demographic adjustment, compared with the lowest tertile, the highest tertiles of IL-18 [hazard ratio (HR) 2.54; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.75-3.68], KIM-1 (HR 2.04; 95% CI 1.44-2.89), NGAL (HR 1.50; 95% CI 1.05-2.14) and ACR (HR 1.63; 95% CI 1.13-2.36) were associated with higher mortality. After multivariable adjustment including adjustment for eGFRcys, only the highest tertiles of IL-18 (HR 1.88; 95% CI 1.29-2.74) and ACR (HR 1.46; 95% CI 1.01-2.12) remained independently associated with mortality. Findings for KIM-1 were borderline (HR 1.41; 95% CI 0.99-2.02). We found a J-shaped association between L-FABP and mortality. Compared with persons in the lowest tertile, the HR for the middle tertile of L-FABP was 0.67 (95% CI 0.46-0.98) after adjustment. Associations were stronger when IL-18, ACR and L-FABP were simultaneously included in models.ConclusionsAmong HIV-infected women, some urinary markers of tubular injury are associated with mortality risk, independently of eGFRcys and ACR. These markers represent potential tools with which to identify early kidney injury in persons with HIV infection.

Abstract

This chapter examines the form of domesticity offered by build to rent (BTR). This is a model of investor-led rental housing introduced and promoted in the United Kingdom as an improvement on the current private rented sector and a solution to the problems of limited housing supply and decreasing affordability of homeownership. The model appears to be configured largely around the needs of investors and managers, both in terms of domestic space and the form of ‘curated domesticity’ offered by the package of amenities that are a key part of BTR developments. As a premium form of housing, BTR is clearly targeted towards tenants at a particular stage in their housing careers when the combination of flexibility and amenity fits their domestic and financial calculations. As these calculations are likely to change, we question the extent to which the model can meet the domestic aspirations of tenants over the course of a whole lifetime.
