Introduction: The broad spectrum of pharmacological properties of linden inflorescence extracts results from polarity and the level of hydrophilic-lipophilic balance of solvents (medium) used to separate compatible phytochemical structures with the expected pharmacotherapeutic profile.

Introduction: Green tea offers not only pleasant, delicate flavor, but also provides health benefits. The extract contains, among others, polyphenols responsible for antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. They reduce the risk of cancer and their presence exerts preventive activity against cardiovascular diseases.

Introduction: Using the general Hildebrand-Scatchard-Fedors theory of solubility, the mole fraction (x2) of solubility of phytochemicals contained in the dry green tea leaves was calculated which determines the profile of pharmacological activity.

Introduction: The general Hildebrand-Scatchard theory of solubility supplemented by Fedors’ solubility parameter −δ12$- \delta ^{{1 \over 2}} $ was used to estimate the real solubility by −log x2 (log of the mole fraction) of phytochemicals contained in Ext. Taraxaci e radix cum herba aqu. siccum. Surface activity of aqueous solution of extracts was determined and quantified – solubilizing capabilities of solutions of cexp. ≥cmc in relation to cholesterol particle size of Ø=1.00 mm, as well as of ketoprofen were defined.

Essential oils from flowers and leaves of Grindelia integrifolia DC. were investigated for the first time in terms of chemical composition and antimicrobial activity. The GC-FID/MS analysis allowed for the identification of 58 and 72 volatiles, comprising 92.4 and 90.1% of the oils, respectively. The major components of the flower oil were α-pinene (34.9%) and limonene (13.1%), while myrcene (16.9%), spathulenol (12.3%), β-eudesmol (11.9%) and limonene (10.1%) dominated among the leaf volatiles. The antimicrobial activity, evaluated against 12 selected bacteria and fungus, was found moderate, with the strongest effect of both oils observed against C. albicans (MIC = MBC: 0.63 and 0.31 mg/mL for flower and leaf oil, respectively). A simple, fast method of high-performance liquid chromatography for the determination and quantification of arbutin and hydroquinone in many different raw materials was developed and validated. The optimum conditions for the separation and detection of these two constituents were achieved on a LiChro-CARD 125-4 Superspher®100 RP-18 column with the water-methanol (gradient elution) mobile phase and recorded at 289 nm. The purities of peaks were verified by PDA analysis of impurities. The results of validation have shown that the HPLC method is stable and accurate for the simultaneous determination of arbutin and hydroquinone in extracts from various plants. The developed method gave a good sensitivity (LOD 1µg/ml for arbutin and 0.49 µg/ml for hydroquinone) with linearity R² >0.9993 (for both). The relative standard deviation of the method was less than 2.53% for intra-day assays and 3.23% for inter-day assay, the accuracy of the recovery test ranged from 98.96% to 106.4%. This method was used in comparative qualitative analysis of arbutin and hydroquinone in 16 different raw materials from families Lamiaceae, Ericacaeae, Saxifragaceae, Rosaceae. 2D-TLC and RP-HPLC methods were applied to qualitatively determinate free phenolic acids and those liberated by acid and alkaline hydrolysis in the flowers and leaves of G. robusta and G. squarrosa. The presence of eleven phenolic acids, namely: caffeic, chlorogenic, p-coumaric, p-hydroxybenzoic, ferulic, gallic, protocatechuic, vanillic salicylic, p-hydroxyphenylacetic and ellagic acids was determined. Quantitative estimate of phenolic acids, expressed as caffeic acid, has been analyzed by the method described in the Polish Pharmacopoeia VIII. The content of phenolic acids in G. robusta reached 7.33 mg/g and 6.23 mg/g for flowers and leaves, respectively. The flowers and leaves of G. squarrosa were characterized by similar level of phenolic acids, namely 6.81 mg/g and 6.59 mg/g, respectively.

The qualitative and quantitative determinations of coumarins, phenolic acids and flavonoids in the leaves and underground parts of Scopolia caucasica using paper chromatography and HPLC methods were described. From the leaves of this plant, kaempferol 3-O-(2-glucosyl)-galactoside-7-O-glucoside, kaempferol 3-O-(2-glucosyl)-galactoside and quercetin 3-O-glucoside were isolated and identified by spectroscopic methods (UV, 1H- and 13C-NMR).

Kaempferol 3-O-(2-glucosyl)-galactoside-7-O-glucoside was isolated from the leaves of Scopolia carniolica Jacq. and S. sinensis Hemsl. From the latter taxon as well as kaempferol 3-O-galactoside and 3-O-(2-glucosyl)-galactoside, kaempferol and quercetin 3-O-robinobiosides and quercetin 3-O-sophoroside have been obtained. Moreover, from the leaves of S lurida Dun. kaempferol and quercetin 3-O-glucosides and 3-O-rutinosides were isolated. The structures of compounds have been determined by means of chemical and spectral methods (UV, LSI MS, 1H and 13C NMR, 1H-1H COSY NMR).

The quantitative determination of coumarins, flavonoids and chlorogenic acid in the leaves and underground parts of Scopolia carniolica Jacq., S. lurida Dun. and S. sinensis Hemsl. using the RP-HPLC method has been described.
