The objective of this work was to characterize the morphology and molecular composition of the hydrochar produced by microwave-assisted hydrothermal carbonization of cellulose. The produced hydrochar consists mainly of aggregate microspheres with about 2.0 µm in diameter, with aliphatic and aromatic structures and the presence of carbonyl functional groups. The aromatic groups are formed mainly by benzofuran-like structures, being chemically different from common cellulose char. Microwave-assisted hydrothermal carbonization yields a functionalized carbon-rich material similar to that produced by the conventional hydrothermal process. O objetivo deste trabalho foi caracterizar a morfologia e a estrutura molecular do hidrocarvão produzido pela carbonização hidrotérmica da celulose por micro-ondas. O hidrocarvão produzido consiste principalmente de microesferas agregadas de aproximadamente 2,0 µm de diâmetro, com estruturas alifáticas e aromáticas e a presença de grupos funcionais carbonilas. Os grupos aromáticos são constituídos basicamente de estruturas do tipo benzofurano, com estrutura química diferente da do carvão obtido da celulose por métodos convencionais. A carbonização hidrotérmica da celulose por micro-ondas produz um material funcionalizado rico em carbono, semelhante ao produzido por métodos hidrotérmicos convencionais.

Os solos da Amazônia que possuem horizonte A antrópico (Au) apresentam elevada fertilidade natural geralmente atribuída ao teor elevado de matéria orgânica e à sua elevada reatividade. Neste estudo foram quantificadas as substâncias húmicas e caracterizados os ácidos húmicos (AH) extraídos da camada 0-20 cm de solos com horizonte Au do estado do Amazonas (Terra Preta de Índio) sob floresta e cultivo agrícola. Também foram investigadas amostras de solos adjacentes sem o horizonte antrópico. A caracterização dos AH foi realizada através de análise termogravimétrica, análise da composição elementar e quantificação dos grupos funcionais (total, carboxílica e fenólica). Os horizontes A de solos antropogênicos apresentaram maior teor de carbono total, comparados aos de solos adjacentes. Entre as frações húmicas, a mais abundante foi a humina. A fração de ácidos húmicos (AH) foi a dominante das frações alcalino-solúveis nos solos estudados. Os AH dos solos antropogênicos tanto sob floresta como sob cultivo agrícola apresentaram maior grau de humificação quando comparados aos AH dos solos sem o horizonte Au. O cultivo agrícola também teve efeito na estabilidade e reatividade dos AH nos solos antropogênicos. Amazonian dark earth soils that have anthropogenic A horizon (Au) present high natural fertility usually attributed to their high organic matter content and to their higher reactivity. In this study humic substances were quantified and the humic acids (HA) extracted from the 0-20 cm layer of Amazonian dark earth soils (Terra Preta do Índio) under forest and agricultural use were characterized. Adjacent soils with no Au horizon were also investigated. The HA were characterized through the thermogravimetric analysis, elemental composition analysis and characterization of functional groups (total, carboxylic, and phenolic). The A horizon of the anthropogenic soils presented higher total carbon level compared to adjacent soils. Among the humic fractions, the humin was the most abundant. The humic acid fraction (HA) was the dominant among the alkaline soluble fractions. The humic acids of the anthropogenic soils, both under forest and cultivation, showed higher humification degree compared to the non-anthropogenic soils. The agricultural cultivation affected the humic acids stability and reactivity in the anthropogenic soils.

Araucaria angustifolia, conhecida popularmente como araucária ou pinheiro do Paraná, é uma conífera endêmica das regiões sul e sudeste do Brasil. O interesse da população pelo pinhão, semente da araucária, faz com que as poucas áreas preservadas representem fonte de renda a um grande número de famílias de coletores. A araucária é uma planta dioica, e somente as plantas femininas produzem o pinhão. A definição do sexo das mudas seria interessante para que se pudesse plantar um número de fêmeas maior que o de machos, o que aumentaria a produção de pinhão e tornaria essa espécie mais atrativa para fins de reflorestamento. Não há técnica para se conhecer o sexo das mudas antes que elas expressem sua sexualidade, o que ocorre, geralmente, entre quinze e vinte anos após o plantio. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o emprego da ressonância magnética nuclear (RMN), da espectrometria de massas (EM) e da espectroscopia na região do infravermelho na abordagem metabolômica não-direcionada para a determinação sexual de indivíduos adultos de araucária. Foram coletadas 80 amostras de acículas de plantas adultas no estado do Paraná. As acículas foram maceradas com nitrogênio líquido e extraídas com clorofórmio deuterado (RMN) ou metanol (EM). Diversos pré-tratamentos foram avaliados, bem como diferentes técnicas multivariadas não-supervisionadas (análise de clusters e análise de componentes principais – PCA) e supervisionadas (análise discriminante por mínimos quadrados parciais – PLS-DA, com e sem seleção de variáveis e análise discriminante linear, LDA, após seleção de variáveis por algoritmo genético). Utilizando os protocolos descritos neste trabalho, os modelos quimiométricos indicaram apenas algumas tendências de separação dos grupos em função do sexo, as quais, contudo, não foram passíveis de generalização. Araucaria angustifolia, popularly known as araucaria or pine of Paraná, is an endemic conifer in the Brazilian southern and southeastern. The preserved areas represent source of income to a great number of families of collectors, due to the interest of the population for the so called “pinhão”, the seed of the araucaria. Araucaria is a dioecious plant, and only the female plants produce the “pinhão”. Determining the sex of the seedlings would be interesting so that a higher number of females than males could be planted, which would increase the production of pinhão and would make this species more attractive for reforestation purposes. There is no technique for knowing the sex of the seedlings before they express their sexuality, which occurs between fifteen and twenty years after planting. The objective of this study was to evaluate the possibility of using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), mass spectrometry (MS), and infrared spectroscopy in the non-targeted metabolomic approach for the sexual determination of adult individuals of araucaria. 80 samples of adult plant needles were collected in the state of Paraná, Brazil. The needles were macerated with liquid nitrogen and extracted with deuterated chloroform (NMR), or methanol (MS). Several pre-treatments were evaluated, as well as different non-supervised (clusters analysis and principal component analysis, PCA) and supervised multivariate techniques (partial least squares discriminant analysis – PLS-DA, linear discriminant analysis, LDA, after selection of variables by genetic algorithm). Using the strategy described herein, the chemometric models indicated only some trends of separation of the groups according to sex, which, however, were not generalizable. Outro

Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of pyrolysis final temperature on the stability of biochar produced from residues of softwoods (Pinus caribaea and Pinus taeda) and hardwoods (Eucalyptus dunnii and Eucalyptus urophylla). For in natura feedstocks, the content of Klason lignin was quantified, it was proceeded elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA/DTA) and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance 13C (13C NMR). For biochars, which were produced at a heating rate of 10?C.min-1 for 60 min at 5 different temperatures (350, 400, 450, 500 and 550?C) it was proceeded proximate analysis s and to the materials produced 350, 450 and 550 ? C, elemental analysis, TGA / DTA and 13C NMR. In order to evaluate the stability of biochar, the stable carbon fraction was quantified (Tce) by thermochemical oxidation with a 5% H2O2 solution at 80?C for 48h, the materials produced at 350, 450 and 550 ?C, before and after oxidation, were analyzed by 13C NMR technique. The contents of Klason lignin did not differ statistically by Tukey test at 5%. As higher the pyrolysis final temperature was, lower was the yield of biochar, higher was the content of fixed carbon (Tcf), lower was the O/C and H/C ratios, higher was the thermogravimetric index (ITG) and higher was the Tce, indicating the increase in stability of these materials after pyrolysis, and this effect was more evident as higher was pyrolysis final temperature. The Rcf and Rce varied little in all the treatments, indicating that no significant gain or loss independent of the feedstock and/or pyrolysis final temperature. High Pearson correlation (0.96) between Rcf and Rce suggests that both approaches could be used to estimate the stable fraction of biochar. From 13C NMR spectra it was observed that biochars produced at 350?C, signals relating to lignin were still present. For 450 and 550?C, the spectra were very similar, indicating that there is no need to produce biochar above these temperatures, since the structure of the materials slightly altered, with a predominance of aromatic structures. For biochars produced at 350?C, it was observed that thermochemical oxidation was responsible for removing the labile structures still present as well as aromatic structures less resistant to degradation. For 450 and 550?C, as they already had the predominance of aromatic structures, thermochemical oxidation has been mainly active in these structures, however much milder. The thermochemical oxidation was responsible for the functionalization of biochars, this effect being milder, as higher was pyrolysis final temperature. Thus, biochars produced at pyrolysis final temperatures up to 450?C, were more stable and therefore more resistant to degradation. O biocarv?o n?o ? composto somente de carbono est?vel. Para os biocarv?es, os quais foram produzidos a uma taxa de aquecimento de 10?C.min-1 por 60 min em 5 diferentes temperaturas (350, 400, 450, 500 e 550?C) procedeu-se a an?lise imediata e para os materiais produzidos a 350, 450 e 550?C, a an?lise elementar, TGA/DTA e RMN 13C. A fim de avaliar a estabilidade do biocarv?o, quantificou-se o teor de carbono est?vel (Tce) atrav?s da oxida??o termoqu?mica com solu??o de H2O2 5 %, a 80?C por 48h, sendo os materiais produzidos a 350, 450 e 550?C, antes e ap?s a oxida??o, analisados atrav?s da t?cnica de RMN 13C. Os teores de lignina de Klason n?o diferiram estatisticamente pelo Teste de Tukey a 5%. Quanto maior a temperatura final de pir?lise, menor o rendimento em biocarv?o, maior o teor de carbono fixo (Tcf), menores as raz?es O/C e H/C, maior o ?ndice termogravim?trico (ITG) e maior o Tce, indicando o aumento da estabilidade dos materiais ap?s a pir?lise, sendo este efeito mais evidente, quanto maior a temperatura final de pir?lise. O Rcf e o Rce variaram pouco para todos os tratamentos, indicando que n?o foram observados ganhos ou perdas expressivos, independente da mat?ria-prima e/ou da temperatura final de pir?lise. A alta correla??o de Pearson (0,96) entre Rcf e Rce sugere que ambas as metodologias poderiam ser utilizadas para estimar a fra??o est?vel do biocarv?o. A partir dos espectros de RMN 13C ? poss?vel observar que em biocarv?es produzidos a 350?C, sinais referentes ? lignina ainda est?o presentes. Em 450 e 550?C, os espectros s?o bem semelhantes, evidenciando que n?o h? necessidade de se produzir biocarv?o acima dessas temperaturas, uma vez que a estrutura qu?mica dos materiais pouco se altera, com o predom?nio de estruturas arom?ticas. Para os biocarv?es produzidos a 350?C, observa-se que a oxida??o termoqu?mica foi respons?vel por remover parte das estruturas l?beis ainda presentes, bem como estruturas arom?ticas menos resistentes ? degrada??o. Em 450 e 550?C, como j? havia o predom?nio de estruturas arom?ticas, a oxida??o termoqu?mica atuou principalmente nestas estruturas; no entanto, de uma forma mais branda. A oxida??o termoqu?mica foi respons?vel pela funcionaliza??o dos biocarv?es, sendo este efeito mais brando, quanto maior a temperatura final de pir?lise. Dessa forma, biocarv?es produzidos em temperaturas finais de pir?lise acima de 450?C, mostraram-se mais est?veis, logo, mais resistentes ? degrada??o.
