Abstract

Biographical features like social and economic status, ethnicity, sexuality, care roles, and gender unfairly disadvantage individuals within academia. Authorship patterns should reflect the social dimension behind the publishing process and co-authorship dynamics. To detect potential gender biases in the authorship of papers and examine the extent of women's contribution in terms of the substantial volume of scientific production in Ecology, we surveyed papers from the top-ranked journal Ecology from 1999 to 2021. We developed a Women's Contribution Index (WCI) to measure gender-based individual contributions. Considering gender, allocation in the author list, and the total number of authors, the WCI calculates the sum of each woman's contribution per paper. We compared the WCI with women's expected contributions in a non-gender-biased scenario. Overall, women account for 30% of authors of Ecology, yet their contribution to papers is higher than expected by chance (i.e., over-contribution). Additionally, by comparing the WCI with an equivalent Men's Contribution Index, we found that women consistently have higher contributions compared to men. We also observed a temporal trend of increasing women's authorship and mixed-gender papers. This suggests some progress in addressing gender bias in the field of ecology. However, we emphasize the need for a better understanding of the pattern of over-contribution, which may partially stem from the phenomenon of over-compensation. In this context, women might need to outperform men to be perceived and evaluated as equals. The WCI provides a valuable tool for quantifying individual contributions and understanding gender biases in academic publishing. Moreover, the index could be customized to suit the specific question of interest. It serves to uncover a previously non-quantified type of bias (over-contribution) that, we argue, is the response to the inequitable structure of the scientific system, leading to differences in the roles of individuals within a scientific publishing team. 5. Late-Holocene environmental conditions revealed by a small mammal assemblage in mountain areas of Northwestern Argentina.

Abstract

Based on a diverse Late-Holocene (1889–1743 cal yrs BP) small mammal assemblage (14 species, 204 individuals) resulting from the trophic activity of owls, we reconstruct the paleoenvironmental conditions of Las Chacritas area, Catamarca Province, northwestern Argentina. Twenty modern and one additional Late-Holocene samples from the region were used as comparative parameters in the paleoenvironmental reconstruction. Through direct comparison with a present-day assemblage from Las Chacritas, and using Nonmetric Multidimensional Scaling, spatial and temporal beta diversity (employing the Sorensen dissimilarity index), and the temporal beta diversity index (TBI) including all the small mammal samples, we quantitatively reconstruct the relationships among modern and Late-Holocene assemblages. Direct comparison showed significant differences, with relative abundances changing markedly over time, with several species of the Late-Holocene assemblage absent in the modern sample whereas many species frequent in the modern community absent in the Late-Holocene. NMDS analysis associated the Late-Holocene assemblage with modern samples of western drier environments. Beta diversity was low for presence-absence and moderate for abundance data, with higher contribution of turnover than nestedness, although for abundance data the proportion of nestedness was higher. TBI showed high variation among both Holocene sites and their present-day counterparts, whereas species gains dominated in modern samples. Our results suggest that the habitats surrounding Las Chacritas have modified markedly since the Late-Holocene. Presence of species today frequent in arid environments and absence of forest-dwelling species suggest that open, dry and relatively rocky habitats characterized this area in that interval. Abstract

The structural proteins of coronaviruses portray critical information to address issues of classification, assembly constraints, and evolutionary pathways involving host shifts. Wecompiled 173 complete protein sequences from isolates belonging to the four genera of the subfamily Coronavirinae. We calculate a single matrix of viral distance as a linear combination of protein distances. The minimum spanning tree (MST) connecting the individuals captures the structure of their similarities. The MST re-capitulates the known phylogeny of Coronovirinae. Hosts were mapped onto the MST and we found a non-trivial concordance between host phylogeny and viral proteomic distance. We also study the chimerism in our dataset through computational simulations. We found evidence that structural units coming from loosely related hosts hardly give rise to feasible chimeras in nature. Abstract

Beta diversity in ecological communities can reflect adaptations of species to differences in climate, environmental characteristics and site history, as well as local ecological dynamics. These dissimilarities among communities may reflect different processes as species replacement and richness difference or nestedness, which can be generated by different factors. Assemblages in mountain regions are expected to exhibit high beta diversity due to sharp environmental variation and historical events promoting isolation. Diversity patterns of small mammals along elevation gradients in the southern dry Andes exhibit high richness among high elevations and a humped shape pattern for abundances. However, it is not clear how beta diversity changes along this gradient, or the processes involved in this variation. Here we aim to evaluate small mammal beta diversity patterns along the elevation gradient. Therefore, we decomposed beta diversity into spatial turnover, richness differences and richness differences as a result of nestedness. Assemblage structure variation was assessed qualitatively and quantitatively. Also, we evaluate the local contribution of beta diversity (LCBD) and species contribution to beta diversity, to identify priority conservation sites and species. Our results show contrasting patterns among qualitative and quantitative beta diversity components. The former was mainly explained by species turnover, while the latter showed a higher contribution of richness difference than species turnover. Most components of beta diversity decreased with elevation, except for abundance turnover that showed an opposite trend. 35. Biogeografía ecológica de los ensambles de pequeños mamíferos en los Andes centrales de Argentina

Abstract

Los Andes constituyen una de las cadenas montañosas más extensas del planeta y un verdadero laboratorio para el estudio de la evolución de la biota sudamericana. En homenaje a José Yepes, uno de los pioneros en caracterizar la distribución de mamíferos de Argentina, buscamos en esta contribución sintetizar, desde la biogeografía ecológica, el conocimiento que tenemos sobre los patrones de diversidad de pequeños mamíferos de los Andes Centrales Áridos (ACA) y los factores causales. Caracterizamos, a nivel regional y local, los patrones de riqueza de roedores y endemismos en función de latitud, altitud y área. A escala regional, generamos una base de datos a partir de rangos de distribución de las especies, mientras que a escala local se realizaron muestreos en 4 transectas altitudinales entre los 32ºS y 35ºS. Entre los resultados destacamos, a escala regional: a) un elevado número de endemismos (> 50 %); b) aumento de riqueza con la altura, y c) relación especies endémicas - área. A escala local destacamos: d) la riqueza incrementa con la altura, precipitación media y heterogeneidad topográfica, y e) mayor abundancia en alturas intermedias. The Andes constitutes an extensive mountain range and a true laboratory for the study of the evolution of South American biota. In recognition to José Yepes, one of the pioneers in characterizing the distribution of mammals of Argentina we seek in this contribution to synthesize, from ecological biogeography, the knowledge we have about the diversity patterns of small mammals of the Central Arid Andes (ACA). We characterize regional and local patterns of rodent richness and endemism as a function of latitude, altitude and area. At regional scale, we constructed a species database using species range maps, meanwhile at the local scale, we conducted small mammal surveys using standardized techniques along 4 elevational transects between 32ºS and 35ºS. Among the results, we highlight, at regional level: a) a high number of endemisms (> 50%); b) richness increase with elevation, and c) endemic species - area relationship. Among the results at local level we stress: d) richness increases with elevation, mean precipitation and topographic heterogeneity, and e) greater abundance at intermediate elevations. Biogeographic-ecological research allows us to depict patterns of composition and distribution of the central Andean biodiversity, and assess some of its causal factors. However, the long term conservation of the Andes requires not only solid biological / ecological knowledge but also conservation policies that integrate the biological, social and cultural dimensions of the Andean ecosystem. This approach seems the most appropriate alternative in the face of the different impacts induced by man and the climate change in the region.

Abstract

Los mamíferos de la Puna argentina se encuentran representados por 54 especies, 33 géneros per tenecientes a 15 familias y 6 órdenes. Rodentia y Carnivora son los órdenes más ricos en especies comprendiendo el 69 y 15%, respectivamente, seguidos de Chiroptera con el 9%. En orden de importancia sigue Artiodactyla con una sola familia y dos especies. Cingulata y Marsupialia se ubican al final con una familia y una especie cada una. Considerando la totalidad de las especies de mamíferos de la Puna y las cinco áreas protegidas nacionales presentes en esta ecorregión se calculó una representatividad general del 65%, es decir 35 de las 54 especies de mamíferos se encuentran registradas en las áreas protegidas nacionales de Argentina. Chiroptera y Rodentia fueron los órdenes presentes en la Puna que tuvieron especies no registradas dentro del sistema nacional de áreas protegidas, alcanzando representatividades del 80 y 51%, respectivamente. Las principales amenazas para los mamíferos en estos ambientes se relacionan con actividades humanas, e incluyen: la cacería, la contaminación y desecación de las fuentes de agua, la introducción de especies exóticas, la degradación del hábitat, la contaminación causada por el turismo y/o las competencias deportivas y la disminución de la cobertura vegetal. Son pocos y muy específicos los esfuerzos científicos y gubernamentales por generar conocimiento sobre los mamíferos puneños, siendo sumamente difícil implementar políticas de uso comercial, manejo y/o conservación. En general, se sabe muy poco sobre los roedores y quirópteros, siendo este desconocimiento una de las amenazas más críticas en algunas circunstancias. Esto ha hecho sumamente difícil interpretar los impactos que una actividad determinada puede causar sobre sus poblaciones. “Puna and High-Andes Mammals”. Mammals at the Puna of Argentine are represented by 54 species, 33 genera belonging to 15 families and 6 orders. Rodentia and Carnivora are the richest orders (69 and 15%, respectively) followed by Chiroptera (9%). Artiodactyla includes one family and two species; Cingulata and Marsupialia are last with one species each. Considering all mammalian species of the Puna and High Andes and the four protected areas of national jurisdiction, a general representation of 61% is calculated: 33 of the 54 mammal species of these ecoregions are recorded in national protected areas of Argentina. Chiroptera and Rodentia orders have species not recorded in the national system of protected areas, reaching a representativeness of 80 and 46% respectively. The main threats to mammals in these environments due to interaction with human activities include: pollution and loss of water sources, hunting and introduction of exotic species, habitat degradation, pollution caused by tourism and/or sporting activities and decreased vegetation cover. Scientific and government efforts are scarce and very specific to generate knowledge about Puna mammals, which results in extremely difficult implementation of policies for commercial use, management and/or conservation. Very little is known about rodents and bats, and this ignorance is one of the most critical threats in some circumstances, since it is not possible to interpret the impacts of any activity to their populations. Abstract

Habitat can constrain and shape successful ecological and physiological strategies, thus providing the context for the evolution of life-history traits. However, unpredictable challenges, such as storms, natural disasters, and human activities can also have great effects on stress. Glucocorticoids (GCs) are adrenal steroid hormones that play an important role in how vertebrates cope with these predictable and unpredictable environmental challenges. Although assessing GCs levels can have many applications in the study of wildlife and/or captive animals, with or without capturing individuals, it requires a species-specific complete validation (analytical and biological) before its use. In this work, our aim was to: (a) validate a radioimmunoassay (RIA) for measuring GCs levels in L. guanicoe serum; (b) assess cortisol and corticosterone levels (if present) in serum of wild L. guanicoe individuals; and (c) compare the response to acute stressors (handling, shearing, and release). Our results successfully: (a) validated RIA for asses GCs levels in wild ungulates; (b) confirmed the presence for cortisol and corticosterone and showed that both GCs are differently affected by environmental stimuli in L. guanicoe; and (c) showed that GCs exhibit different patterns in the field and in response to acute stressors, making these camelids an interesting endocrinological model when seeking the adaptive functions of a given variation and further emphasizing the complexity of GC physiology in wild mammals. Abstract

Habitat can constrain and shape successful ecological and physiological strategies, thus providing the context for the evolution of life-history traits. However, unpredictable challenges, such as storms, natural disasters, and human activities can also have great effects on stress. Glucocorticoids (GCs) are adrenal steroid hormones that play an important role in how vertebrates cope with these predictable and unpredictable environmental challenges. Although assessing GCs levels can have many applications in the study of wildlife and/or captive animals, with or without capturing individuals, it requires a species-specific complete validation (analytical and biological) before its use. In this work, our aim was to: (a) validate a radioimmunoassay (RIA) for measuring GCs levels in L. guanicoe serum; (b) assess cortisol and corticosterone levels (if present) in serum of wild L. guanicoe individuals; and (c) compare the response to acute stressors (handling, shearing, and release). Our results successfully: (a) validated RIA for asses GCs levels in wild ungulates; (b) confirmed the presence for cortisol and corticosterone and showed that both GCs are differently affected by environmental stimuli in L. guanicoe; and (c) showed that GCs exhibit different patterns in the field and in response to acute stressors, making these camelids an interesting endocrinological model when seeking the adaptive functions of a given variation and further emphasizing the complexity of GC physiology in wild mammals. 49. A cytogenetic, molecular genetic and morphological study of Patagonian chinchilla mice Euneomys(Rodentia, Cricetidae) in the Southern Central Andes

Abstract

Euneomysis a genus of sigmodontine rodent endemic to South America, distributed along the Andes of Argentina and Chile and in adjoining Patagonian steppe. Here, we studied specimens of Euneomysfrom different localities in the Central Andes, Mendoza Province, Argentina. Karyotypic analyses confirm the presence of a new karyomorph of Euneomys chinchilloides, the form 2n= 34, FN = 62–64. This new karyomorph differs from the form E. chinchilloideswith 2n= 36, FN = 64–66. The chromosome complement with 2n= 36 has an extra pair of small acro-telocentric chromosomes that is not present in individuals with 2n= 34. We also found small differences in molecular analyses with the mitochondrial COI gene. We recovered two monophyletic clades, one with specimens with 2n= 34 and the other one with specimens with 2n= 36, which are separated by a range of 0.7 to 1.2 % sequence divergence. Individuals from the two clades also show some morphological differences. Significant difference in the length of ear was found between the specimens with 2n= 34 and 36, and qualitative differences in the shape of the incisive foramen, the palate, and the palatine fossa were observed. The modification on fundamental and diploid number that we found between the two karyomorphs of E. chinchilloidescan be the result of tandem chromosome fusion; such rearrangements are strongly negatively heterotic and lead to reproductive isolation between differentiated populations. Thus, the integrated cytogenetic, molecular, and morphologic analyses show concordant differentiation between the two karyomorph types of the uncommon E. chinchilloidesfrom the Southern Central Andes of Argentina. The evidence presented here might reflect a recent and/or incipient allopatric speciation event. Further investigations are needed to elucidate the taxonomic and distributional status of species of Euneomys.

50. Diversity and distribution of small mammals in the South American Dry Andes.

Abstract

The Andean mountain range has played an important role in the evolution of South American biota. However, there is little understanding of the patterns of species diversity across latitudinal and altitudinal gradients. In this paper, we examine the diversity of small mammals along the South Central Dry Andes (SCDA) within the framework of two contrasting hypotheses: (a) species richness decreases with increasing elevation and latitude; and (b) species richness peaks at altitudinal midpoints (mid-domain). We explore the composition of the species pool, the impact of species-area relationships and the Rapoport effect (i.e. size of geographic ranges) along latitudinal and elevational gradients. First, we constructed a database of SCDA small mammals. Then, species richness patterns were analysed through generalized models, and species-area relationships were assessed by log-log regressions; the curvilinear method (c = S/Az) was use to compute richness corrected by area size. Lastly, the Rapoport effect was evaluated using the midpoint method. Our results show: (1) a richness of 67 small mammals along the SCDA, of which 36 are endemic; (2) a hump-shaped pattern in species richness along elevation and latitudinal gradients; (3) a species-area relationship for both gradients; (4) endemic species corrected by area present a strong and positive relationship with elevation; (5) a Rapoport effect for the latitudinal ranges, but no effect across the elevational gradient; and (6) a major species turnover between 28° and 30° south latitude. This is the first study quantifying the diversity of small mammals encompassing the central Andean region. Overall, our macrogeographic analysis supports the previously postulated role of the Andes in the diversification of small mammals (i.e. in situ cladogenesis) and highlights some basic attributes (i.e. anatomy of geographic ranges; species-area relationships) when considering the consequences of climate change on biodiversity conservation of mountain ecosystems.
