1. Observing of background electromagnetic radiation of the real sky through the throat of a wormhole

Abstract: The numerical investigation conducted in this paper addresses the problem of CMB radiation imaging as seen through the throat of the Ellis-Bronnikov-Morris-Thorne wormhole. It is assumed that both throats of the wormhole are relatively close to our stellar neighborhood, so close that the view of the ambient background radiation by an observer at the other throat of the wormhole is virtually identical to that seen from the Solar System neighborhood. A map of the temperature distribution of the cosmic microwave background radiation observed through the mouth of the wormhole has been constructed as well as a view of the Milky Way through the mouth of the wormhole. The resultant image contains characteristic details that enable it to be distinguished from an image produced by a black hole., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

Abstract: We report a search for high-energy astrophysical neutrino multiplets, detections of multiple neutrino clusters in the same direction within 30 days, based on an analysis of 11.4 years of IceCube data. A new search method optimized for transient neutrino emission with a monthly time scale is employed, providing a higher sensitivity to neutrino fluxes. This result is sensitive to neutrino transient emission, reaching per-flavor flux of approximately $10^{-10}\ {\rm erg}\ {\rm cm}^{-2}\ {\rm sec}^{-1}$ from the Northern sky in the energy range $E\gtrsim 50$~TeV. The number of doublets and triplets identified in this search is compatible with the atmospheric background hypothesis, which leads us to set limits on the nature of neutrino transient sources with emission timescales of one month.

3. Actively-trained magnetic Moment Tensor Potentials reproduce mechanical, dynamical, and thermal properties of paramagnetic CrN

Abstract: We present a protocol for automated fitting of magnetic Moment Tensor Potential explicitly including magnetic moments in its functional form. For the fitting of this potential we use energies, forces, stresses, and magnetic forces (negative derivatives of energies with respect to magnetic moments) of configurations selected with an active learning algorithm. These selected configurations are computed using constrained density functional theory, which enables calculating energies and their derivatives for both equilibrium and non-equilibrium (excited) magnetic states. We test our protocol on the system of B1-CrN and demonstrate that the automatically trained magnetic Moment Tensor Potential reproduces mechanical, dynamical, and thermal properties, of B1-CrN in the paramagnetic state with respect to density functional theory and experiments.

4. Hybrid quantum network for sensing in the acoustic frequency range

Abstract: Ultimate limits for sensing of fields and forces are set by the quantum noise of a sensor. Entanglement allows for suppression of such noise and for achieving sensitivity beyond standard quantum limits. Applicability of quantum optical sensing is often restricted by fixed wavelengths of available photonic quantum sources. Another ubiquitous limitation is associated with challenges of achieving quantum-noise-limited sensitivity in the acoustic noise frequency range relevant for a number of applications. Here we demonstrate a novel tool for broadband quantum sensing by quantum state processing that can be applied to a wide range of the optical spectrum, and by suppressing quantum noise over an octave in the acoustic frequency range. An atomic spin ensemble in the quantum regime is strongly coupled to one of the tunable frequency modes of an Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) source of light. The other EPR mode of light, entangled with the first one, is tuned to a disparate wavelength. Engineering the spin ensemble to act as a negative- or positive-mass oscillator we demonstrate frequency-dependent, entanglement-enabled quantum noise reduction for measurements at the disparate wavelength. The tunability of the spin ensemble allows to target quantum noise in a variety of systems with dynamics ranging from kHz to MHz. As an example of the broadband quantum noise reduction in the acoustic frequency range, we analyse the applicability of our approach to state-of-the-art gravitational wave detectors. Abstract: We analyzed the 7.92$\times 10^{11}$ cosmic-ray-induced muon events collected by the IceCube Neutrino Observatory from May 13, 2011, when the fully constructed experiment started to take data, to May 12, 2023. This dataset provides an up-to-date cosmic-ray arrival direction distribution in the Southern Hemisphere with unprecedented statistical accuracy covering more than a full period length of a solar cycle. Improvements in Monte Carlo event simulation and better handling of year-to-year differences in data processing significantly reduce systematic uncertainties below the level of statistical fluctuations compared to the previously published results. We confirm the observation of a change in the angular structure of the cosmic-ray anisotropy between 10 TeV and 1 PeV, more specifically in the 100-300 TeV energy range.

6. Secondary staircase complexes on isotropic Grassmannians

Abstract: We introduce a class of equivariant vector bundles on isotropic symplectic Grassmannians $\mathrm{IGr}(k,2n)$ defined as appropriate truncations of staircase complexes and show that these bundles can be assembled into a number of complexes quasi-isomorphic to the symplectic wedge powers of the symplectic bundle on $\mathrm{IGr}(k,2n)$. We are planning to use these secondary staircase complexes to study fullness of exceptional collections in the derived categories of isotropic Grassmannians and Lefschetz exceptional collections on $\mathrm{IGr}(3,2n)$.

7. Amplifying human performance in combinatorial competitive programming

Abstract: Recent years have seen a significant surge in complex AI systems for competitive programming, capable of performing at admirable levels against human competitors. While steady progress has been made, the highest percentiles still remain out of reach for these methods on standard competition platforms such as Codeforces. Here we instead focus on combinatorial competitive programming, where the target is to find as-good-as-possible solutions to otherwise computationally intractable problems, over specific given inputs. We hypothesise that this scenario offers a unique testbed for human-AI synergy, as human programmers can write a backbone of a heuristic solution, after which AI can be used to optimise the scoring function used by the heuristic. We deploy our approach on previous iterations of Hash Code, a global team programming competition inspired by NP-hard software engineering problems at Google, and we leverage FunSearch to evolve our scoring functions. Our evolved solutions significantly improve the attained scores from their baseline, successfully breaking into the top percentile on all previous Hash Code online qualification rounds, and outperforming the top human teams on several. Abstract: We demonstrate an approach that allows separating two-point correlations created by a Gaussian random field from correlations created by cosmic foregrounds such as polarized dust emission, gravitational lensing and other non-Gaussian signals. The result of traditional approaches should typically be a 'foreground-cleaned' two-dimensional CMB map of the anisotropy or polarization. Abstract: The Radio Neutrino Observatory in Greenland (RNO-G) is the first in-ice radio array in the northern hemisphere for the detection of ultra-high energy neutrinos via the coherent radio emission from neutrino-induced particle cascades within the ice. The array is currently in phased construction near Summit Station on the Greenland ice sheet, with 7~stations deployed during the first two boreal summer field seasons of 2021 and 2022. In this paper, we describe the installation and system design of these initial RNO-G stations, and discuss the performance of the array as of summer 2024.

Abstract: We consider a radiation solution $\psi$ for the Helmholtz equation in an exterior region in $\mathbb R^2$. We show that $\psi$ in the exterior region is uniquely determined by its imaginary part $Im(\psi)$ on an interval of a line $L$ lying in the exterior region. This result has holographic prototype in the recent work [Nair, Novikov, arXiv:2408.08326]. Some other curves for measurements instead of the lines $L$ are also considered. 11. Phase transitions in KNbO3: symmetry analysis and first principles calculations

Abstract: Group theoretical aspects of the three temperature-dependent and temperature-reversible experimentally observed phase transitions in the KNbO3 crystal (cubic-tetragonal, tetragonal-orthorhombic, orthorhombic-rhombohedral) in the framework of the group-subgroup relationship tree have been discussed. The ab initio DFT-HSE06 LCAO calculations of the electron and phonon properties, with optimisation of lattice parameters and atomic coordinates for all experimentally observed KNbO3 phases, are used for better understanding of the details of these phase transitions. Good agreement with the experimental data was found for the structural properties. Ab initio calculations of the phonon dispersion curves confirmed the existence of a stable phase only for the rhombohedral structure found experimentally for the lowest temperature of 263 K. For the remaining three higher temperature phases, imaginary frequencies appear, implying a nonstability of these phases. The only the cubic-tetragonal phase transition has been found to be symmetry allowed. The tetragonal-orthorhombic and orthorhombic-rhombohedral phases are not related to the group-subgroup relationship. An explanation is proposed based also on the results of ab initio calculations of the structure of the monoclinic phase, which we have chosen as a virtual one for the tetragonal-orthorhombic transition in the bulk.

12. Robust Sparse Regression with Non-Isotropic Designs

Abstract: We develop a technique to design efficiently computable estimators for sparse linear regression in the simultaneous presence of two adversaries: oblivious and adaptive. We design several robust algorithms that outperform the state of the art even in the special case when oblivious adversary simply adds Gaussian noise. In particular, we provide a polynomial-time algorithm that with high probability recovers the signal up to error $O(\sqrt{\varepsilon})$ as long as the number of samples $n \ge \tilde{O}(k^2/\varepsilon)$, only assuming some bounds on the third and the fourth moments of the distribution ${D}$ of the design. In addition, prior to this work, even in the special case of Gaussian design and noise, no polynomial time algorithm was known to achieve error $o(\sqrt{\varepsilon})$ in the sparse setting $n < d^2$. We show that under some assumptions on the fourth and the eighth moments of ${D}$, there is a polynomial-time algorithm that achieves error $o(\sqrt{\varepsilon})$ as long as $n \ge \tilde{O}(k^4 / \varepsilon^3)$. For Gaussian distribution, this algorithm achieves error $O(\varepsilon^{3/4})$. Moreover, our algorithm achieves error $o(\sqrt{\varepsilon})$ for all log-concave distributions if $\varepsilon \le 1/\text{polylog(d)}$. Our algorithms are based on the filtering of the covariates that uses sum-of-squares relaxations, and weighted Huber loss minimization with $\ell_1$ regularizer. We provide a novel analysis of weighted penalized Huber loss that is suitable for heavy-tailed designs in the presence of two adversaries. Abstract: We propose a methodology that exploits large and diverse data sets to accurately estimate the ambient medium's Green's functions in strongly scattering media. Given these estimates, obtained with and without the use of neural networks, excellent imaging results are achieved, with a resolution that is better than that of a homogeneous medium. This phenomenon, also known as super-resolution, occurs because the ambient scattering medium effectively enhances the physical imaging aperture. 14. Gaussianity test of Planck CMB polarization data using the statistics of unpolarized points (Part I)

Abstract: We present a detailed test for Gaussianity of Planck polarization data using statistics of unpolarized points on the sky, i.e. such points where the linear polarization vanishes. The algorithm we propose for finding such points is stable and guarantees their 100% detection. Our approach allows us to analyze the data for Gaussianity of the signal at different angular scales and detect areas on the polarization maps with a significant contribution from unremoved non-Gaussian foregrounds. Abstract: DNA-Encoded Libraries (DEL) are combinatorial small molecule libraries that offer an efficient way to characterize diverse chemical spaces. Selection experiments using DELs are pivotal to drug discovery efforts, enabling high-throughput screens for hit finding. However, limited availability of public DEL datasets hinders the advancement of computational techniques designed to process such data. To bridge this gap, we present KinDEL, one of the first large, publicly available DEL datasets on two kinases: Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase 14 (MAPK14) and Discoidin Domain Receptor Tyrosine Kinase 1 (DDR1). Interest in this data modality is growing due to its ability to generate extensive supervised chemical data that densely samples around select molecular structures. Demonstrating one such application of the data, we benchmark different machine learning techniques to develop predictive models for hit identification; in particular, we highlight recent structure-based probabilistic approaches. Finally, we provide biophysical assay data, both on- and off-DNA, to validate our models on a smaller subset of molecules. Abstract: Thanks to their record high refractive index and giant optical anisotropy, van der Waals (vdW) materials have accelerated the development of nanophotonics. However, traditional high refractive index materials, such as titanium dioxide (TiO2), still dominate in the most important visible range. This is due to the current lack of transparent vdW materials across the entire visible spectrum. In this context, we propose that germanium disulfide (GeS2) could offer a significant breakthrough. With its high refractive index, negligible losses, and biaxial optical anisotropy across the whole visible range, GeS2 has the potential to complement TiO2 and close the application gap of vdW materials in the visible spectrum. 17. Tensor-Train Point Cloud Compression and Efficient Approximate Nearest-Neighbor Search

Abstract: Nearest-neighbor search in large vector databases is crucial for various machine learning applications. This paper introduces a novel method using tensor-train (TT) low-rank tensor decomposition to efficiently represent point clouds and enable fast approximate nearest-neighbor searches. We propose a probabilistic interpretation and utilize density estimation losses like Sliced Wasserstein to train TT decompositions, resulting in robust point cloud compression. We reveal an inherent hierarchical structure within TT point clouds, facilitating efficient approximate nearest-neighbor searches. In our paper, we provide detailed insights into the methodology and conduct comprehensive comparisons with existing methods. We demonstrate its effectiveness in various scenarios, including out-of-distribution (OOD) detection problems and approximate nearest-neighbor (ANN) search tasks.

20. Design, fabrication, and testing of diamond axicons for X-ray microscopy applications

Abstract: This work presents the design, fabrication, and experimental validation of a refractive diamond axicon for X-ray beam shaping. The diamond axicon was developed to overcome the limitations of polymer-based axicons particularly for application in Transmission X-ray Microscopy (TXM) systems, offering superior mechanical strength, thermal stability, and radiation resistance, making it ideal for synchrotron applications. The axicon was fabricated using femtosecond laser ablation and tested at 11 keV under various coherence conditions. Results demonstrated that the axicon efficiently transformed the X-ray beam into a ring-shaped profile with over 80% transmission. Simulations confirmed the experimental findings and highlighted the potential for further improvements. This work paves the way for the use of diamond axicons in next-generation synchrotron facilities, with future efforts focusing on optimizing fabrication and testing the axicon in full TXM systems.

21. PSWF-Radon approach to reconstruction from band-limited Hankel transform

Abstract: We give new formulas for reconstructions from band-limited Hankel transform of integer or half-integer order. Our formulas rely on the PSWF-Radon approach to super-resolution in multidimensional Fourier analysis. This approach consists of combining the theory of classical one-dimensional prolate spheroidal wave functions with the Radon transform theory. We also use the relation between Fourier and Hankel transforms and Cormack-type inversion of the Radon transform. Finally, we investigate numerically the capabilities of our approach to super-resolution for band-limited Hankel inversion in relation to varying levels of noise.

22. Diffusion of knowledge and the lottery society

Abstract: The Lucas-Moll system is a mean-field game type model describing the growth of an economy by means of diffusion of knowledge. The individual agents in the economy advance their knowledge by learning from each other and via internal innovation. Their cumulative distribution function satisfies a forward in time nonlinear non-local reaction-diffusion type equation. On the other hand, the learning strategy of the agents is based on the solution to a backward in time nonlocal Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation that is coupled to the aforementioned equation for the agents density. Together, these equations form a system of the mean-field game type. When the learning rate is sufficiently large, existence of balanced growth path solutions to the Lucas-Moll system was proved in~\cite{PRV,Porretta-Rossi}. Here, we analyze a complementary regime where the balanced growth paths do not exist. The main result is a long time convergence theorem. Namely, the solution to the initial-terminal value problem behaves in such a way that at large times an overwhelming majority of the agents spend no time producing at all and are only learning. In particular, the agents density propagates at the Fisher-KPP speed. We name this type of solutions a lottery society.

23. Geometry of the cumulant series in neuroimaging

Abstract: Water diffusion gives rise to micrometer-scale sensitivity of diffusion MRI (dMRI) to cellular-level tissue structure. The advent of precision medicine and quantitative imaging hinges on revealing the information content of dMRI, and providing its parsimonious basis- and hardware-independent "fingerprint". Here we reveal the geometry of a multi-dimensional dMRI signal, classify all 21 invariants of diffusion and covariance tensors in terms of irreducible representations of the group of rotations, and relate them to tissue properties. Previously studied dMRI contrasts are expressed via 7 invariants, while the remaining 14 provide novel complementary information. We design acquisitions based on icosahedral vertices guaranteeing minimal number of measurements to determine 3-4 most used invariants in only 1-2 minutes for the whole brain. Representing dMRI signals via scalar invariant maps with definite symmetries will underpin machine learning classifiers of brain pathology, development, and aging, while fast protocols will enable translation of advanced dMRI into clinical practice.

24. Random eigenvalues of nanotubes

Abstract: The hexagonal lattice and its dual, the triangular lattice, serve as powerful models for comprehending the atomic and ring connectivity, respectively, in \textit{graphene} and \textit{carbon $(p,q)$--nanotubes}. The chemical and physical attributes of these two carbon allotropes are closely linked to the average number of closed paths of different lengths $k\in\mathbb{N}_0$ on their respective graph representations. Considering that a carbon $(p,q)$--nanotube can be thought of as a graphene sheet rolled up in a matter determined by the \textit{chiral vector} $(p,q)$, our findings are based on the study of \textit{random eigenvalues} of both the hexagonal and triangular lattices presented in \cite{bille2023random}. This study reveals that for any given \textit{chiral vector} $(p,q)$, the sequence of counts of closed paths forms a moment sequence derived from a functional of two independent uniform distributions. Explicit formulas for key characteristics of these distributions, including probability density function (PDF) and moment generating function (MGF), are presented for specific choices of the chiral vector. Moreover, we demonstrate that as the \textit{circumference} of a $(p,q)$--nanotube approaches infinity, i.e., $p+q\rightarrow \infty$, the $(p,q)$--nanotube tends to converge to the hexagonal lattice with respect to the number of closed paths for any given length $k$, indicating weak convergence of the underlying distributions.

25. Enhanced Parking Perception by Multi-Task Fisheye Cross-view Transformers

Abstract: Current parking area perception algorithms primarily focus on detecting vacant slots within a limited range, relying on error-prone homographic projection for both labeling and inference. However, recent advancements in Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) require interaction with end-users through comprehensive and intelligent Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs). These interfaces should present a complete perception of the parking area going from distinguishing vacant slots' entry lines to the orientation of other parked vehicles. This paper introduces Multi-Task Fisheye Cross View Transformers (MT F-CVT), which leverages features from a four-camera fisheye Surround-view Camera System (SVCS) with multihead attentions to create a detailed Bird-Eye View (BEV) grid feature map. Features are processed by both a segmentation decoder and a Polygon-Yolo based object detection decoder for parking slots and vehicles. Trained on data labeled using LiDAR, MT F-CVT positions objects within a 25m x 25m real open-road scenes with an average error of only 20 cm. Our larger model achieves an F-1 score of 0.89. Moreover the smaller model operates at 16 fps on an Nvidia Jetson Orin embedded board, with similar detection results to the larger one. MT F-CVT demonstrates robust generalization capability across different vehicles and camera rig configurations. 27. A holographic uniqueness theorem for the two-dimensional Helmholtz equation

We consider a straight line in this region, such that the direction of propagation of the plane wave is not parallel to this line. We show that the radiation solution in the exterior region is uniquely determined by the intensity of the total solution on an interval of this line. In particular, this result solves one of the old mathematical questions of holography in its two-dimensional setting. Abstract: A detailed experimental analysis of the impact of active region design on the performance of 1300 nm lasers based on InGaAs/InAlGaAs superlattices is presented. Three different types of superlattice active regions and waveguide layer compositions were grown. Using a superlattice allows to downshift the energy position of the miniband, as compared to thin InGaAs quantum wells, having the same composition, being beneficial for high-temperature operation. Very low internal loss (~6$cm^{-1}$), low transparency current density of ~500$ A/cm^2$, together with 46$ cm^{-1}$ modal gain and 53 % internal efficiency were observed for broad-area lasers with an active region based on a highly strained $In_{0.74}Ga_{0.26}As/In_{0.53}Al_{0.25}Ga_{0.22}As$ superlattice. Characteristic temperatures $T_0$ and $T_1$ were improved up to 76 K and 100 K, respectively. These data suggest that such superlattices have also the potential to much improve VCSEL properties at this wavelength.

30. Exploring Higher Education Students' Attitudes toward e-Learning after COVID-19

Abstract: The proliferation of technology and the heightened significance of e-learning in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic transformed the perspectives and attitudes of educational stakeholders toward educational technology. The objective of this research was to explore the attitudes of higher education students toward e-learning. Data collection was conducted via a questionnaire. The findings demonstrated that the key benefit of e-learning, as reported by a substantial majority (77.0%) of participants, is the convenience of studying from home. This is closely followed by the advantage of learning at one's own pace, as 69.4% of respondents expressed. A considerable proportion (58.8%) highlighted the comfort factor associated with e-learning, along with the cost-saving aspect of reduced expenses on accommodation and transportation. Other advantages included the ability to access course materials remotely (57.6%) option to record meetings online (51.1%), regarding disadvantages of e-learning, the majority (59.4%) of respondents indicated that e-learning limits interaction with others, followed by social isolation (44.1%), lack of self-discipline (43.5%), internet problems (43.5%). The results showed that elearning was perceived to be less effective compared to conventional face-to-face learning. Also, we showed that, in general, there is no significant relationship between socio-demographic variables and attitudes toward e-learning. Only a few significant relationships were found regarding demographic variables on attitudes. We made educational implications for the next studies on our results.

Abstract: {We give a short review of old and recent results on scatterers with transmission eigenvalues of infinite multiplicity, including transparent scatterers. Historically, these studies go back to the publications: Regge (Nuovo Cimento 14, 1959), Newton (J. Math. Phys. 3, 1962) and Sabatier (J. Math. Phys. 7, 1966). Our review is based on the works: Grinevich, Novikov (Commun. Math. Phys. 174, 1995; Eurasian Journal of Mathematical and Computer Applications 9(4), 2021; Russian Math. Surveys, 77(6), 2022). Results of the first of these works include examples of transparent at fixed energy potentials from the Schwartz class in two dimensions. The two others works include the result that, for compactly supported multipoint potentials of Bethe - Peierls - Thomas type in two and three dimensions, any positive energy is a transmission eigenvalue of infinite multiplicity., Comment: 10 pages

32. Limit Value in Zero-Sum Stochastic Games with Vanishing Stage Duration and Public Signals

Abstract: We consider the behaviour of $\lambda$-discounted zero-sum games as the discount factor $\lambda$ approaches 0 (that is, the players are more and more patient), in the context of games with stage duration. In stochastic games with stage duration h, players act at times 0, h, 2h, and so on. The payoff and leaving probabilities are proportional to h. When h tends to 0, such discrete-time games approximate games played in continuous time. The asymptotic behavior of the values (when both $\lambda$ and h tend to 0) was already studied in the case of stochastic games with perfect observation of the state and in the state-blind case.We consider the same question for the case of stochastic games with imperfect observation of the state. More precisely, we consider a particular case of such games, stochastic games with public signals, in which players are given at each stage a public signal that depends only on the current state. Our main result states that there exists a stochastic game with public signals, with no limit value (as the discount factor $\lambda$ goes to 0) if stage duration is 1, but with a limit value when stage duration h and discount factor $\lambda$ both tend to 0. Informally speaking, it means that the limit value in discrete time does not exist, but the limit value in continuous time (i.e. when h approaches 0) exists. Abstract: A comprehensive numerical modelling of microcavity parameters for micropillar lasers with optical pumping was presented. The structure with a hybrid dielectric-semiconductor top mirror has a significantly higher calculated quality-factor (~65000 for 5 $\mu$m pillar) due to better vertical mode confinement. The minimum laser threshold (~370 $\mu$W for 5 $\mu$m pillar) coincided with a temperature of 130 K, which is close to zero gain to cavity detuning. Lasing up to 220 K was demonstrated with a laser threshold of about 2.2 mW.

34. Inverted Activations: Reducing Memory Footprint in Neural Network Training

Abstract: The scaling of neural networks with increasing data and model sizes necessitates the development of more efficient deep learning algorithms. A significant challenge in neural network training is the memory footprint associated with activation tensors, particularly in pointwise nonlinearity layers that traditionally save the entire input tensor for the backward pass, leading to substantial memory consumption. In this paper, we propose a modification to the handling of activation tensors in pointwise nonlinearity layers. Our method involves saving the output tensor instead of the input tensor during the forward pass. Since the subsequent layer typically also saves its input tensor, this approach reduces the total memory required by storing only one tensor between layers instead of two. This optimization is especially beneficial for transformer-based architectures like GPT, BERT, Mistral, and Llama. To enable this approach, we utilize the inverse function of the nonlinearity during the backward pass. As the inverse cannot be computed analytically for most nonlinearities, we construct accurate approximations using simpler functions. Experimental results demonstrate that our method significantly reduces memory usage without affecting training accuracy or computational performance. Our implementation is provided as a drop-in replacement for standard nonlinearity layers in the PyTorch framework, facilitating easy adoption without requiring architectural modifications.

35. Robust Mixture Learning when Outliers Overwhelm Small Groups

Abstract: We study the problem of estimating the means of well-separated mixtures when an adversary may add arbitrary outliers. While strong guarantees are available when the outlier fraction is significantly smaller than the minimum mixing weight, much less is known when outliers may crowd out low-weight clusters - a setting we refer to as list-decodable mixture learning (LD-ML). In this case, adversarial outliers can simulate additional spurious mixture components. Hence, if all means of the mixture must be recovered up to a small error in the output list, the list size needs to be larger than the number of (true) components. We propose an algorithm that obtains order-optimal error guarantees for each mixture mean with a minimal list-size overhead, significantly improving upon list-decodable mean estimation, the only existing method that is applicable for LD-ML. Although improvements are observed even when the mixture is non-separated, our algorithm achieves particularly strong guarantees when the mixture is separated: it can leverage the mixture structure to partially cluster the samples before carefully iterating a base learner for list-decodable mean estimation at different scales.

36. QCD corrections to Higgs boson production and $H \to b \bar{b}$ decay in weak boson fusion

Abstract: We study QCD corrections to the process where a Higgs boson is produced in weak boson fusion and then decays into a pair of massive $b$ quarks. We find that typical experimental criteria used to identify $b$ jets in this process affect QCD corrections to the decay, making it necessary to account for them in the proper description of this process. Indeed, if corrections to the production and decay are combined, the fiducial cross section of the weak boson fusion process $p p \to H(\to b \bar{b}) j j$ is reduced by about $40\%$ relative to leading-order predictions, compared to just about $8\%$ if only corrections to the production process are considered. We investigate the origin of these large corrections through next-to-next-to-leading-order and conclude that they appear because a number of independent moderately-large effects conspire to significantly reduce the fiducial cross section for this process., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

37. Denoising Improves Cross-Scanner and Cross-Protocol Test-Retest Reproducibility of Higher-Order Diffusion Metrics

Abstract: The clinical translation of diffusion MRI (dMRI)-derived quantitative contrasts hinges on robust reproducibility, minimizing both same-scanner and cross-scanner variability. This study evaluates the reproducibility of higher-order diffusion metrics (beyond conventional diffusion tensor imaging), at the voxel and region-of-interest levels on magnitude and complex-valued dMRI data, using denoising with and without harmonization. We compared same-scanner, cross-scanner, and cross-protocol variability for a multi-shell dMRI protocol in 20 subjects. We first evaluated the effectiveness of denoising strategies for both magnitude and complex data to mitigate noise-induced bias and variance, to improve dMRI parametric maps and reproducibility. We examined the impact of denoising under different analysis approaches, comparing voxel-wise and region of interest (ROI)-based methods. We also evaluated the role of denoising when harmonizing dMRI across scanners and protocols. DTI and DKI maps visually improve after MPPCA denoising, with noticeably fewer outliers in kurtosis maps. Denoising enhances voxel-wise reproducibility, with test-retest variability of kurtosis indices reduced from 15-20% to 5-10% after denoising. Complex dMRI denoising reduces the noise floor by up to 60%. In ROI-analyses, denoising also increased statistical power, with reduction in sample size requirements by up to 40% for detecting differences across populations. Combining denoising with linear-RISH harmonization, in voxel-wise assessments, improved intra-scanner intraclass correlation coefficients for FA from moderate to excellent repeatability over harmonization alone. The enhancement in data quality and precision due to denoising facilitates the broader application and acceptance of these advanced imaging techniques in both clinical practice and large-scale neuroimaging studies.

Abstract: We report on microlasers based on high-quality micropillars with lasing on whispering-gallery modes. Usage of low-absorbing Al$\scriptsize 0.2$Ga$\scriptsize 0.8$As\Al$\scriptsize 0.9$Ga$\scriptsize 0.1$As distributed Bragg reflectors as well as the smooth pillar sidewalls allows us to realize whispering-gallery modes lasing by excitation and collection of emission in the pillar axis direction. As a result, simultaneous whispering gallery modes lasing (comb-like structure) in the wavelength range of 930-970 nm is observed for 3-7 $\mu$m pillar diameters. Increase the temperature up to 130 K results single-mode lasing for 5 $\mu$m pillars with about 8000 cold cavity quality-factor and 240 $\mu$W estimated threshold excitation power.

Abstract: Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are prime candidate sources of the high-energy, astrophysical neutrinos detected by IceCube. This is demonstrated by the real-time multi-messenger detection of the blazar TXS 0506+056 and the recent evidence of neutrino emission from NGC 1068 from a separate time-averaged study. However, the production mechanism of the astrophysical neutrinos in AGN is not well established which can be resolved via correlation studies with photon observations. For neutrinos produced due to photohadronic interactions in AGN, in addition to a correlation of neutrinos with high-energy photons, there would also be a correlation of neutrinos with photons emitted at radio wavelengths. In this work, we perform an in-depth stacking study of the correlation between 15 GHz radio observations of AGN reported in the MOJAVE XV catalog, and ten years of neutrino data from IceCube. We also use a time-dependent approach which improves the statistical power of the stacking analysis. No significant correlation was found for both analyses and upper limits are reported. When compared to the IceCube diffuse flux, at 100 TeV and for a spectral index of 2.5, the upper limits derived are $\sim3\%$ and $\sim9\%$ for the time-averaged and time-dependent case, respectively., Comment: 14 Pages 7 Figures

Abstract: We present a search for an eV-scale sterile neutrino using 7.5 years of data from the IceCube DeepCore detector. The analysis uses a sample of 21,914 events with energies between 5 and 150 GeV to search for sterile neutrinos through atmospheric muon neutrino disappearance. Improvements in event selection and treatment of systematic uncertainties provide greater statistical power compared to previous DeepCore sterile neutrino searches. Our results are compatible with the absence of mixing between active and sterile neutrino states, and we place constraints on the mixing matrix elements $|U_{\mu 4}|^2 < 0.0534$ and $|U_{\tau 4}|^2 < 0.0574$ at 90% CL under the assumption that $\Delta m^2_{41}\geq 1\;\mathrm{eV^2}$. These null results add to the growing tension between anomalous appearance results and constraints from disappearance searches in the 3+1 sterile neutrino landscape., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures. 42. On boundary points of minimal continuously Hutchinson invariant sets

Abstract: A linear differential operator $T=Q(z)\frac{d}{dz}+P(z)$ with polynomial coefficients defines a continuous family of Hutchinson operators when acting on the space of positive powers of linear forms. In this context, $T$ has a unique minimal Hutchinson-invariant set $M_{CH}^{T}$ in the complex plane. Using a geometric interpretation of its boundary in terms of envelops of certain families of rays, we subdivide this boundary into local and global arcs (the former being portions of integral curves of the rational vector field $\frac{Q(z)}{P(z)}\partial_{z}$), and singular points of different types which we classify below. The latter decomposition of the boundary of $M_{CH}^{T}$ is largely determined by its intersection with the plane algebraic curve formed by the inflection points of trajectories of the field $\frac{Q(z)}{P(z)}\partial_{z}$. We provide an upper bound for the number of local arcs in terms of degrees of $P$ and $Q$. Abstract: The recent IceCube detection of TeV neutrino emission from the nearby active galaxy NGC 1068 suggests that active galactic nuclei (AGN) could make a sizable contribution to the diffuse flux of astrophysical neutrinos. The absence of TeV $\gamma$-rays from NGC 1068 indicates neutrino production in the vicinity of the supermassive black hole, where the high radiation density leads to $\gamma$-ray attenuation. Therefore, any potential neutrino emission from similar sources is not expected to correlate with high-energy $\gamma$-rays. Disk-corona models predict neutrino emission from Seyfert galaxies to correlate with keV X-rays, as they are tracers of coronal activity. Using through-going track events from the Northern Sky recorded by IceCube between 2011 and 2021, we report results from a search for individual and aggregated neutrino signals from 27 additional Seyfert galaxies that are contained in the BAT AGN Spectroscopic Survey (BASS). Besides the generic single power-law, we evaluate the spectra predicted by the disk-corona model. Assuming all sources to be intrinsically similar to NGC 1068, our findings constrain the collective neutrino emission from X-ray bright Seyfert galaxies in the Northern Hemisphere, but, at the same time, show excesses of neutrinos that could be associated with the objects NGC 4151 and CGCG 420-015. Abstract: Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are promising candidate sources of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos since they provide environments rich in matter and photon targets where cosmic ray interactions may lead to the production of gamma rays and neutrinos. We searched for high-energy neutrino emission from AGN using the $\textit{Swift}$-BAT Spectroscopic Survey (BASS) catalog of hard X-ray sources and 12 years of IceCube muon track data. First, upon performing a stacked search, no significant emission was found. Second, we searched for neutrinos from a list of 43 candidate sources and found an excess from the direction of two sources, Seyfert galaxies NGC 1068 and NGC 4151. We observed NGC 1068 at flux $\phi_{\nu_{\mu}+\bar{\nu}_{\mu}}$ = $4.02_{-1.52}^{+1.58} \times 10^{-11}$ TeV$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ normalized at 1 TeV, with power-law spectral index, $\gamma$ = 3.10$^{+0.26}_{-0.22}$, consistent with previous IceCube results. The observation of a neutrino excess from the direction of NGC 4151 is at a post-trial significance of 2.9$\sigma$. If interpreted as an astrophysical signal, the excess observed from NGC 4151 corresponds to a flux $\phi_{\nu_{\mu}+\bar{\nu}_{\mu}}$ = $1.51_{-0.81}^{+0.99} \times 10^{-11}$ TeV$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ normalized at 1 TeV and $\gamma$ = 2.83$^{+0.35}_{-0.28}$.

45. A class of sequential multi-hypothesis tests

Abstract: In this paper, we deal with sequential testing of multiple hypotheses. In the general scheme of construction of optimal tests based on the backward induction, we propose a modification which provides a simplified (generally speaking, suboptimal) version of the optimal test, for any particular criterion of optimization. We call this DBC version (the one with Dropped Backward Control) of the optimal test. In particular, for the case of two simple hypotheses, dropping backward control in the Bayesian test produces the classical sequential probability ratio test (SPRT). Similarly, dropping backward control in the modified Kiefer-Weiss solutions produces Lorden's 2-SPRTs . In the case of more than two hypotheses, we obtain in this way new classes of sequential multi-hypothesis tests, and investigate their properties. The efficiency of the DBC-tests is evaluated with respect to the optimal Bayesian multi-hypothesis test and with respect to the matrix sequential probability ratio test (MSPRT) by Armitage. In a multihypothesis variant of the Kiefer-Weiss problem for binomial proportions the performance of the DBC-test is numerically compared with that of the exact solution. In a model of normal observations with a linear trend, the performance of of the DBC-test is numerically compared with that of the MSPRT. Some other numerical examples are presented. In all the cases the proposed tests exhibit a very high efficiency with respect to the optimal tests (more than 99.3\% when sampling from Bernoulli populations) and/or with respect to the MSPRT (even outperforming the latter in some scenarios)., Comment: 16 pages, 4 tables

Abstract: We present the first three-parameter fit to a 3+1 sterile neutrino model using 7.634 years of data from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory on $\nu_\mu+\overline{\nu}_\mu$ charged-current interactions in the energy range 500--9976 GeV. Our analysis is sensitive to the mass-squared splitting between the heaviest and lightest mass state ($\Delta m_{41}^2$), the mixing matrix element connecting muon flavor to the fourth mass state ($|U_{\mu4}|^2$), and the element connecting tau flavor to the fourth mass state ($|U_{\tau4}|^2$). Predicted propagation effects in matter enhance the signature through a resonance as atmospheric neutrinos from the Northern Hemisphere traverse the Earth to the IceCube detector at the South Pole. The remaining sterile neutrino matrix elements are left fixed, with $|U_{e4}|^2= 0$ and $\delta_{14}=0$, as they have a negligible effect, and $\delta_{24}=\pi$ is set to give the most conservative limits. The result is consistent with the no-sterile neutrino hypothesis with a probability of 4.3%. Profiling the likelihood of each parameter yields the 90\% confidence levels: $ 2.4\,\mathrm{eV}^{2} < \Delta m_{41}^2 <9.6\,\mathrm{eV}^{2} $ , $0.0081 < |U_{\mu4}|^2 < 0.10$ , and $|U_{\tau4}|^2< 0.035$, which narrows the allowed parameter-space for $|U_{\tau4}|^2$. However, the primary result of this analysis is the first map of the 3+1 parameter space exploring the interdependence of $\Delta m_{41}^2$, $|U_{\mu4}|^2$, and $|U_{\tau4}|^2$., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures. Abstract: We have developed an in-situ index of refraction profile n(z) for cold polar ice, using the transit times of radio signals broadcast from an englacial transmitter to 2-5 km distant radio-frequency receivers, deployed at depths up to 200 m. For propagation through a non-uniform medium, Maxwell's equations generally admit two ray propagation solutions from a given transmitter, corresponding to a direct path (D) and a refracted or reflected path (R); the measured D vs. R timing differences (dt(D,R)) are determined by the refractive index profile. We constrain n(z) near South Pole, where the Askaryan Radio Array (ARA) neutrino observatory is located, by simulating D and R ray paths via ray tracing and comparing simulations to measured dt(D,R) values. Using previous ice density data as a proxy for n(z), we demonstrate that our data strongly favors a glaciologically-motivated three-phase densification model rather than a single exponential scale height model. Effective volume simulations for a detector of ARA station antenna depths yield a 14\% increase in neutrino sensitivity over a range of $10^{17} - 10^{21}$ eV using the three-phase model compared to a single exponential.

48. Interatomic Interaction Models for Magnetic Materials: Recent Advances

Abstract: Atomistic modeling is a widely employed theoretical method of computational materials science. It has found particular utility in the study of magnetic materials. Initially, magnetic empirical interatomic potentials or spin-polarized density functional theory (DFT) served as the primary models for describing interatomic interactions in atomistic simulations of magnetic systems. Furthermore, in recent years, a new class of interatomic potentials known as magnetic machine-learning interatomic potentials (magnetic MLIPs) has emerged. These MLIPs combine the computational efficiency, in terms of CPU time, of empirical potentials with the accuracy of DFT calculations. In this review, our focus lies on providing a comprehensive summary of the interatomic interaction models developed specifically for investigating magnetic materials. We also delve into the various problem classes to which these models can be applied. Finally, we offer insights into the future prospects of interatomic interaction model development for the exploration of magnetic materials.

Abstract: Recently, the n$^3$He collaboration reported a measurement of the parity-violating (PV) proton directional asymmetry $A_{\mathrm {PV}} = (1.55\pm 0.97~\mathrm {(st\ at)} \pm 0.24~\mathrm {(sys)})\times 10^{-8}$ in the capture reaction of ${}^3$He$(\vec {n},{\mathrm p}){}^3$H at meV incident neutron energies. The result increased the limited inventory of precisely measured and calculable PV observables in few-body systems required to further understand the structure of hadronic weak interaction. In this letter, we report the experimental and theoretical investigation of a parity conserving (PC) asymmetry $A_{\mathrm {PC}}$ in the same reaction (the first ever measured PC observable at meV neutron energies). As a result of S- and P-wave mixing in the reaction, the $A_{\mathrm {PC}}$ is inversely proportional to the neutron wavelength $\lambda$. The experimental value is $(\lambda\times A_{\mathrm {PC}})\equiv\beta= (-1.97 \pm 0.28~\mathrm{(stat)}\pm 0.12~\mathrm{(sys)}) \times 10^{-6}$ Amstrongs. We present results for a theoretical analysis of this reaction by solving the four-body scattering problem within the hyperspherical harmonic method. We find that in the ${}^3$He$(\vec {n},{\mathrm p}){}^3$H reaction, $A_{\mathrm {PC}}$ depends critically on the energy and width of the close $0^-$ resonant state of ${}^4$He, resulting in a large sensitivity to the spin-orbit components of the nucleon-nucleon force and even to the three-nucleon force. The analysis of the accurately measured $A_{\mathrm {PC}}$ and $A_{\mathrm {PV}}$ using the same few-body theoretical models gives essential information needed to interpret the PV asymmetry in the ${}^3$He$(\vec {n}, {\mathrm p}){}^3$H reaction., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: We provide supporting details for the search for a 3+1 sterile neutrino using data collected over eleven years at the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. The analysis uses atmospheric muon-flavored neutrinos from 0.5 to 100\, TeV that traverse the Earth to reach the IceCube detector, and finds a best-fit point at $\sin^2(2\theta_{24}) = 0.16$ and $\Delta m^{2}_{41} = 3.5$ eV$^2$ with a goodness-of-fit p-value of 12\% and consistency with the null hypothesis of no oscillations to sterile neutrinos with a p-value of 3.1\%. Several improvements were made over past analyses, which are reviewed in this article, including upgrades to the reconstruction and the study of sources of systematic uncertainty. We provide details of the fit quality and discuss stability tests that split the data for separate samples, comparing results.
