Rice is one of the most consumed cereals in Cameroon, the production of which remains affected by several factors, including excessive temperatures and the irregular increase in rainfall. This study used the VAR model to explore the reciprocal influence of climate change with rice yield via the evolution of rainfall and temperature as well as the intensity of CO2 emissions per rice product in the northern zone of the Cameroon. The data used comes from FAOSTAT and the “World Bank Group Climate Change Knowledge Portal over the period between 1975 and 2021. The following results were obtained. i) The constant increase in rainfall during the rainy season reduces the yield of rice and that of temperature improves the yield of rice. ii) the CO2 emission intensity per unit of rice production has a negative effect on its yield. iii) This CO2 emission reduces the rainfall pattern and stimulates the rise in temperatures and therefore reinforces climate change. We therefore recommend that rice farmers be attentive to the reciprocal effects of climate change and rice cultivation and to use new techniques allowing the reduction of CO2 emission intensity by using more organic fertilizers than chemical ones.

This paper investigates the impact of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) on poverty reduction in Cameroon from on the period 1984-2014. Auto Regressive Distributed Lags (ARDL) bounds test approach to co-integration has been applied to analyze the data coming from freedom house and World Development Indicators (WDI). Three poverty reduction proxies namely life expectancy, per capita household consumption expenditure and infant mortality rate are used to capture multidimensional feature of poverty and to increase the robustness of the results. The findings revealed that the impact of FDI to alleviate poverty is less significant in Cameroon as evidenced by one out of three (infant mortality) poverty reduction proxies where a short-run positive impact of FDI on poverty reduction is confirmed. These findings suggest that Cameroon may use FDI as a short-term poverty reduction instrument. JEL Classifications: F21, I30

The Franc Zone is an experience of monetary cooperation between France and 15 of its former colonies in sub-Saharan Africa, which has been in existence for more than 70 years. Long remained closed and almost forbidden to all critics, this area is subject to a recurrent debate that now goes beyond the restricted circles of universities and politics to involve civil society. After having briefly recalled its mechanisms of operations and relying on a summary comparative analysis of some available indicators, the article presents and above all analyzes the options for future evolution, highlighting for each, the advantages as well as the constraints that are associated with it. We recognize that there is no perfect exchange rate regime, and that the quality of governance remains the essential guarantee to minimize the impact of the shocks associated with each exchange rate regime. La Zone Franc est une expérience de coopération monétaire entre la France et 15 de ses anciennes colonies d’Afrique au sud du Sahara, qui subsiste depuis plus de 70 ans. Elle est, de manière récurrente depuis quelques années, l’objet d’un débat qui dépasse désormais les cercles restreints des Universités et du politique. Le débat y relatif intéresse de nos jours la société civile. Après avoir brièvement rappelé ses mécanismes de fonctionnement et s’appuyant sur un bilan comparatif succinct à partir de quelques indicateurs, l’article présente et surtout analyse les options d’évolution future, mettant en exergue pour chacune, les avantages ainsi que les contraintes qui y sont associés. Nous admettons qu’il n’existe pas de régime de change parfait, et que la qualité de la gouvernance demeure la garantie indispensable pour minimiser l’impact des chocs associés à chaque régime de change.
