Abstract

In quantum communication protocols, the use of photon-number-resolving detectors could open new perspectives by broadening the way to encode and decode information, and merging the properties of discrete and continuous variables. In this work, we consider a quantum channel exploiting a Silicon-photomultiplier-based receiver and evaluate its performance for quantum communication protocols under three possible configurations, defined by different post-processing of the detection outcomes. We investigate two scenarios: information transmission over the channel, quantified by the mutual information, and continuous-variable quantum key distribution. 2. Joint estimation of noise and nonlinearity in Kerr systems

Abstract

We address characterization of lossy and dephasing channels in the presence of self-Kerr interaction using coherent probes. In particular, we investigate the ultimate bounds to precision in the joint estimation of loss and nonlinearity and of dephasing and nonlinearity. To this aim, we evaluate the quantum Fisher information matrix (QFIM), and compare the symmetric quantum Cram\'er-Rao bound (QCR) to the bound obtained with Fisher information matrix (FIM) of feasible quantum measurements, i.e., homodyne and double-homodyne detection. For lossy Kerr channels, our results show the loss characterization is enhanced in the presence of Kerr nonlinearity, especially in the relevant limit of small losses and low input energy, whereas the estimation of nonlinearity itself is unavoidably degraded by the presence of loss. In the low energy regime, homodyne detection of a suitably optimized quadrature represents a nearly optimal measurement. The Uhlmann curvature does not vanish, therefore loss and nonlinearity can be jointly estimated only with the addition of intrinsic quantum noise. For dephasing Kerr channels, the QFIs of the two parameters are independent of the nonlinearity, and therefore no enhancement is observed. Homodyne and double-homodyne detection are suboptimal for the estimation of dephasing and nearly optimal for nonlinearity. 3. Employing weak-field homodyne detection for quantum communications

Abstract

We investigate the role of weak-field homodyne (WF) measurement for quantum communications over a lossy bosonic channel with coherent state encoding. This kind of receiver employs photon-number resolving (PNR) detectors with finite resolution and low-intensity local oscillator. As a figure of merit, we consider the mutual information for a Gaussian input modulation. We prove an enhancement over Shannon capacity in the photon starved regime, obtained by exploiting information on the mean signal energy to suitably optimize the local oscillator intensity. Thereafter, we investigate the performance of non-Gaussian modulation, by considering a Gamma distribution of the energy of the encoded pulses, and achieve an increase in the information rate with respect to the Gaussian modulation case in the intermediate energy regime, being more accentuated for low values of the PNR resolution., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures

5. Stability-Certified On-Policy Data-Driven LQR via Recursive Learning and Policy Gradient

Abstract

In this paper, we investigate a data-driven framework to solve Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) problems when the dynamics is unknown, with the additional challenge of providing stability certificates for the overall learning and control scheme. Specifically, in the proposed on-policy learning framework, the control input is applied to the actual (unknown) linear system while iteratively optimized. We propose a learning and control procedure, termed RELEARN LQR, that combines a recursive least squares method with a direct policy search based on the gradient method. The resulting scheme is analyzed by modeling it as a feedback-interconnected nonlinear dynamical system. A Lyapunov-based approach, exploiting averaging and singular perturbations theory for nonlinear systems, allows us to provide formal stability guarantees for the whole interconnected scheme. The effectiveness of the proposed strategy is corroborated by numerical simulations, where RELEARN LQR is deployed on an aircraft control problem, with both static and drifting parameters.

9. A robust hybrid receiver for binary phase-shift keying discrimination in the presence of phase noise

Abstract

We address the problem of coherent state discrimination in the presence of phase diffusion. We investigate the role of the hybrid near-optimum receiver (HYNORE) we proposed in [J. Opt. Soc. Am. B 40, 705-714 (2023)] in the task of mitigating the noise impact. We prove the HYNORE to be a robust receiver, outperforming the displacement photon-number-resolving (DPNR) receiver and beating the standard quantum limit in particular regimes. We introduce the maximum tolerable phase noise $\sigma_{\mathrm{max}}$ as a figure of merit for the receiver robustness and show that HYNORE increases its value with respect to the DPNR receiver., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

Transmission losses through optical fibers are one of the main obstacles preventing both long-distance quantum communications and continuous-variable quantum key distribution. Optical amplification provides a tool to obtain, at least partially, signal restoration. In this work, we address a key distribution protocol over a multispan link employing either phase-insensitive or phase-sensitive amplifiers, considering Gaussian modulation of coherent states followed by homodyne detection at the receiver's side. We perform the security analysis under both unconditional and composable security frameworks by assuming in the latter case only a single span of the whole communication link to be untrusted. We compare the resulting key generation rate for both kinds of amplified links with the no-amplifier protocol, identifying the enhancement introduced by optical amplification., Comment: 25 pages, 11 figures

We propose a hybrid feed-forward receiver (HFFRE) for the discrimination of binary phase-shift-keyed coherent states based on the appropriate combination of a displacement feed-forward receiver (DFFRE) and a homodynelike setup employing a low-intensity local oscillator and photon-number-resolving detectors. We investigate the performance of the proposed scheme, also addressing realistic scenarios in the presence of nonunit quantum detection efficiency, dark counts, and visibility reduction. 14. Optimizing state-discrimination receivers for continuous-variable quantum key distribution over a wiretap channel

Abstract

We address a continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) protocol employing quaternary phase-shift-keying (QPSK) of coherent states and a non-Gaussian measurement inspired by quantum receivers minimizing the error probability in a quantum-state-discrimination scenario. We consider a pure-loss quantum wiretap channel, in which a possible eavesdropper is limited to collect the sole channel losses. We perform a characterization of state-discrimination receivers and design an optimized receiver maximizing the asymptotic secure key rate (SKR), namely the key-rate optimized receiver (KOR), comparing its performance with respect to the pretty good measurement (PGM) and the heterodyne-based protocol. We show that the KOR increases the SKR for metropolitan-network distances. Finally, we also investigate the implementations of feasible schemes, such as the displacement feed-forward receiver, obtaining an increase in the SKR in particular regimes., Comment: 23 pages, 8 figures

Noiseless linear amplifiers (NLAs) provide a powerful tool to achieve long-distance continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) in the presence of realistic setups with non unit reconciliation efficiency. We address a NLA-assisted CV-QKD protocol implemented via realistic physical NLAs, namely, quantum scissors (QS) and single-photon catalysis (SPC), and compare their performance with respect to the ideal NLA $g^{\hat{n}}$. Abstract

To face the ongoing issues related to global warming, a circular economy approach should be pursued, rethinking the waste management system and the recovery of organic waste. The main organic waste streams are Food Waste (FW) and municipal Sewage Sludge (SS). In the spirit of circularity, a commingled treatment of FW and SS could be a viable solution. To this end, the present work aims to review the technical and environmental aspects of the co-treatment of FW and SS through biological and thermal processes. Firstly, a detailed characterization of the two substrates is presented as well as the current and future treatment technologies. Then, the technical feasibility and the environmental impacts of conventional biological co-treatments of FW and SS (i.e., composting, anaerobic digestion, and a combination of them), as well as innovative thermal ones (i.e., incineration, gasification, pyrolysis, and hydrothermal carbonization), is summarized. The outcomes of this work could contribute to achieving a more sustainable way to approach organic waste treatment and to help policy-making authorities move toward sustainable planning.

21. Entanglement recovery in noisy binary quantum information protocols via three-qubit quantum error correction codes

Abstract

The task of preserving entanglement against noises is of crucial importance for both quantum communication and quantum information transfer. To this aim, quantum error correction (QEC) codes may be employed to compensate, at least partially, the detriments induced by environmental noise that can be modelled as a bit-flip or a phase-flip error channel. In this paper we investigate the effects of the simple three-qubit QEC codes to restore entanglement and nonlocality in a two-qubit system and consider two practical applications: superdense coding and quantum teleportation. Though the considered three-qubit QEC codes are known to perfectly work in the presence of very small noise, we show that they can avoid the sudden death of entanglement and improve the performance of the addressed protocols also for larger noise amplitudes., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

To achieve the maximum information transfer and face a possible eavesdropper, the samples transmitted in continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) protocols are to be drawn from a continuous Gaussian distribution. As a matter of fact, in practical implementations the transmitter has a finite (power) dynamics and the Gaussian sampling can be only approximated. This requires the quantum protocols to operate at small powers. In this paper, we show that a suitable probabilistic amplitude shaping of a finite set of symbols allows to approximate at will the optimal channel capacity also for increasing average powers. We investigate the feasibility of this approach in the framework of CV-QKD, propose a protocol employing discrete quadrature amplitude modulation assisted with probabilistic amplitude shaping, and we perform the key generation rate analysis assuming a wiretap channel and lossless homodyne detection., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

We address the characterization of lossy and dephasing channels in the presence of self-Kerr interaction using coherent probes. In particular, we investigate the ultimate bounds to precision in the joint estimation of loss and nonlinearity and of dephasing and nonlinearity. To this aim, we evaluate the quantum Fisher information matrix and compare the symmetric quantum Cramér–Rao bound to the bound obtained with Fisher information matrix of feasible quantum measurements, i.e., homodyne and double-homodyne detection. For lossy Kerr channels, our results show that the loss characterization is enhanced in the presence of Kerr nonlinearity, especially in the relevant limit of small losses and low input energy, whereas the estimation of nonlinearity itself is unavoidably degraded by the presence of loss. In the low energy regime, homodyne detection of a suitably optimized quadrature represents a nearly optimal measurement. The Uhlmann curvature does not vanish; therefore, loss and nonlinearity can be jointly estimated only with the addition of intrinsic quantum noise. For dephasing Kerr channels, the quantum Fisher information of the two parameters is independent of the nonlinearity, and therefore, no enhancement is observed. Homodyne detection and double-homodyne detection are suboptimal for the estimation of dephasing and nearly optimal for nonlinearity. Also in this case, the Uhlmann curvature is nonzero, proving that the parameters cannot be jointly estimated with maximum precision.

Abstract

Forest fires in Italy are mainly caused by humans, and directly depend on social behavior, whether voluntary (arson) or involuntary (negligence). Despite the progress in knowledge made with studying the physical facets of the phenomenon, causes and motives of human-related fire remain mostly unknown. This paper proposes the implementation of the Delphi method (an interactive expert-questionnaire process) in order to assess why fires are ignited. In four study cases, within a high fire incidence area (southern Italy), the Delphi technique identified as major cause of negligence the use of fire in agriculture and, as major causes of voluntary fires, motives related to seasonal labor. The main results in terms of frequency are: (i) for involuntary events (negligence), experts unanimously identified the relevant importance of negligent use of agricultural fires, particularly stubble burning (13.99% of responses). For (ii) voluntary fires (arson), results highlight the relative importance of fires ignited by seasonal workers as an instrument to force or maintain employment (8.41% of responses).

We consider Berry's random planar wave model (1977), and prove spatial functional limit theorems - in the high-energy limit - for discretized and truncated versions of the random field obtained by restricting its nodal length to rectangular domains. Our analysis is crucially based on a detailed study of the projection of nodal lengths onto the so-called second Wiener chaos, whose high-energy fluctuations are given by a Gaussian total disorder field indexed by polygonal curves. Abstract

Abstract Background Literature suggests colonic resection and primary anastomosis (RPA) instead of Hartmann’s procedure (HP) for the treatment of left-sided colonic emergencies. We aim to evaluate the surgical options globally used to treat patients with acute left-sided colonic emergencies and the factors that leading to the choice of treatment, comparing HP and RPA. Methods This is a prospective, international, multicenter, observational study registered on ClinicalTrials.gov. A total 1215 patients with left-sided colonic emergencies who required surgery were included from 204 centers during the period of March 1, 2020, to May 31, 2020. with a 1-year follow-up. Results 564 patients (43.1%) were females. The mean age was 65.9 ± 15.6 years. HP was performed in 697 (57.3%) patients and RPA in 384 (31.6%) cases. Complicated acute diverticulitis was the most common cause of left-sided colonic emergencies (40.2%), followed by colorectal malignancy (36.6%). Abstract

We propose a near-optimum receiver for the discrimination of binary phase-shift-keyed coherent states employing photon-number-resolving detectors. The receiver exploits a discrimination strategy based on both the so-called homodyne-like and the direct detection, thus resulting in a hybrid scheme. We analyse the performance and the robustness of the proposed scheme under realistic conditions, namely, in the presence of inefficient detection and dark counts. Abstract

Equipping current decision-making tools with notions of fairness, equitability, or other ethically motivated outcomes, is one of the top priorities in recent research efforts in machine learning, AI, and optimization. In this paper, we investigate how to allocate limited resources to {locally interacting} communities in a way to maximize a pertinent notion of equitability. In particular, we look at the dynamic setting where the allocation is repeated across multiple periods (e.g., yearly), the local communities evolve in the meantime (driven by the provided allocation), and the allocations are modulated by feedback coming from the communities themselves. We employ recent mathematical tools stemming from data-driven feedback online optimization, by which communities can learn their (possibly unknown) evolution, satisfaction, as well as they can share information with the deciding bodies. We design dynamic policies that converge to an allocation that maximize equitability in the long term. We further demonstrate our model and methodology with realistic examples of healthcare and education subsidies design in Sub-Saharian countries. One of the key empirical takeaways from our setting is that long-term equitability is fragile, in the sense that it can be easily lost when deciding bodies weigh in other factors (e.g., equality in allocation) in the allocation strategy. Abstract

Besnoitia spp. are cyst-forming coccidian parasites with a broad host range, infecting various wild and domestic animal species. Northamerican opossums (Didelphis virginiana) are severely affected by the infection with B. darlingi. This study presents a case of infection with Besnoitia in a road-killed female southern black-eared opossum (Didelphis aurita) in Misiones, Argentina. Many 0.5–1 mm cysts were observed in several muscles and visceral organs and were microscopically identified in skeletal muscles, tongue, and heart. Histological analysis disclosed multiple spherical cysts with a myriad of bradyzoites like-cells and a well-defined cyst wall. A small number of degenerate and ruptured cysts, surrounded by mild to moderate inflammation were observed. Genomic DNA from an individual cyst and muscle was extracted and ITS1 marker and 18S rRNA gene fragments from sarcocystid protozoa were successfully amplified by PCR and sequenced. The 18S sequence exhibited 100% identity with sequences of B. darlingi and B. oryctofelisi. Comparison of the complete ITS1 sequence (259 bp) revealed an identity of 99.2% with B. oryctofelisi and 97.7% with B. darlingi. This result together with the phylogeny positioning, suggest that the Besnoitia sp. in the present case differ from B. darlingi, being closely related with B. oryctofelisi.

Abstract

Background Nursing workload is largely studied but poorly explored under physical, mental, and emotional dimensions. Currently, only a limited number of variables have been linked to nursing workload and work contexts. Purpose The study aimed to investigate whether it is feasible to identify variables that consistently correlate with nursing workload and others that are specific to the context. Methods We employed a descriptive correlational analysis and a cross-sectional design. Data were collected through a survey distributed to registered nurses working across Italy, at the conclusion of randomly assigned morning or afternoon shifts. Results We received 456 surveys from 195 shifts, collected from nurses in four public and two private hospitals. Commonly associated variables with nursing workload dimensions included patient complexity of care, admission/discharge or transfer, informing patients/relatives, contacting physicians, and unscheduled activities. Variables categorized as setting-specific were patient isolation and specialties, nurse-to-patient ratio, adequacy of staff in the shift, peer collaboration, healthcare documentation, educating others, and medical urgency. Conclusions In summary, certain variables consistently correlate with nursing workload across settings, while others are specific to the context of care. It is imperative for nurses and nurse managers to measure the nursing workload in various dimensions, enabling the prompt implementation of improvement actions.

Abstract

We revisit an algorithm for distributed consensus optimization proposed in 2010 by J. Wang and N. Elia. By means of a Lyapunov-based analysis, we prove input-to-state stability of the algorithm relative to a closed invariant set composed of optimal equilibria and with respect to perturbations affecting the algorithm's dynamics. In the absence of perturbations, this result implies linear convergence of the local estimates and Lyapunov stability of the optimal steady state. Moreover, we unveil fundamental connections with the well-known Gradient Tracking and with distributed integral control. Overall, our results suggest that a control theoretic approach can have a considerable impact on (distributed) optimization, especially when robustness is considered.

Abstract

This paper proposes Asynchronous Triggered Gradient Tracking, i.e., a distributed optimization algorithm to solve consensus optimization over networks with asynchronous communication. As a building block, we devise the continuous-time counterpart of the recently proposed (discrete-time) distributed gradient tracking called Continuous Gradient Tracking. By using a Lyapunov approach, we prove exponential stability of the equilibrium corresponding to agents' estimates being consensual to the optimal solution, with arbitrary initialization of the local estimates. Then, we propose two triggered versions of the algorithm. In the first one, the agents continuously integrate their local dynamics and exchange with neighbors their current local variables in a synchronous way. In Asynchronous Triggered Gradient Tracking, we propose a totally asynchronous scheme in which each agent sends to neighbors its current local variables based on a triggering condition that depends on a locally verifiable condition. The triggering protocol preserves the linear convergence of the algorithm and avoids the Zeno behavior, i.e., an infinite number of triggering events over a finite interval of time is excluded. By using the stability analysis of Continuous Gradient Tracking as a preparatory result, we show exponential stability of the equilibrium point holds for both triggered algorithms and any estimate initialization. Finally, the simulations validate the effectiveness of the proposed methods on a data analytics problem, showing also improved performance in terms of inter-agent communication.

Abstract

A new species of Dracunculus is described in wild neotropical otters, Lontra longicaudis, occurring in Corrientes, Argentina, based on morphological and molecular characteristics. Worms were located in the subcutaneous tissue from two of five investigated otters. Dracunculus jaguape n. sp. is differentiated from the 14 species of Dracunculus described from mammals and reptiles by the prominent dorsal and ventral papillae on the head; deirids posterior to nerve ring; male with long needlelike spicules and presence of gubernaculum; and long first stage larva. Phylogenetic analysis using the 18S rRNA positioned Dracunculus jaguape n. sp. in an anterior position to the rest of Dracunculus sequences available and COI positioned it in a separated clade sister to Dracunculus lutrae sequences. This is the first report on the presence of this nematode in Lontra longicaudis in Argentina.

We present a toolbox to probe quantum many-body states implemented on Rydberg-atoms quantum hardware via randomized measurements. We illustrate the efficacy of this measurement toolbox in the context of probing entanglement, via the estimation of the purity, and of verifying a ground-state preparation using measurements of the Hamiltonian variance. To achieve this goal, we develop and discuss in detail a protocol to realize independent, local unitary rotations. We benchmark the protocol by investigating the ground state of the one-dimensional SSH model, recently realized on a chain of Rydberg atom, and the state resulting after a sudden quench in a staggered XY chain. Abstract

We consider the problem of revealing a small hidden lattice from the knowledge of a low-rank sublattice modulo a given sufficiently large integer -- the {\em Hidden Lattice Problem}. A central motivation of study for this problem is the Hidden Subset Sum Problem, whose hardness is essentially determined by that of the hidden lattice problem. We describe and compare two algorithms for the hidden lattice problem: we first adapt the algorithm by Nguyen and Stern for the hidden subset sum problem, based on orthogonal lattices, and propose a new variant, which we explain to be related by duality in lattice theory. Following heuristic, rigorous and practical analyses, we find that our new algorithm brings some advantages as well as a competitive alternative for algorithms for problems with cryptographic interest, such as Approximate Common Divisor Problems, and the Hidden Subset Sum Problem. Finally, we study variations of the problem and highlight its relevance to cryptanalysis.

Abstract

Background: Consumption of flavonoid-rich orange juice has been shown to reduce adiposity and liver steatosis in murine models of diet-induced obesity. However, little is known about the effects of whole orange intake, independent of body weight changes, on liver function and steatosis in individuals with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). The goal is to understand the direct impact of orange consumption on metabolic health. Methods: Sixty-two men and women aged 30–65 with MASLD (Controlled Attenuation Parameter, (CAP) > 275 dB/m) were randomly assigned to consume either 400 g of whole oranges or non-citrus fruits daily for 4 weeks. Baseline evaluations included medical assessments, blood tests, and body composition. Liver health was assessed using transient elastography (FibroScan®) for steatosis and fibrosis, conducted by blinded personnel. This clinical trial was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT05558592). Results: After 4 weeks of orange supplementation, liver steatosis decreased in the treatment group, with 70.9% showing steatosis compared to 100% in controls (p < 0.004), indicating a 30% reduction in liver disease prevalence. There were no significant changes in fibrosis or plasma liver enzymes, though plasma gamma glutaril transferase (GGT) levels decreased significantly. Body weight, waist circumference, body composition, lipid profile, fasting glucose, insulin, and C-reactive protein levels remained unchanged. Dietary analysis revealed no change in caloric intake, but vitamins C, A, thiamine, and riboflavin increased in the orange group. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that phytochemical-rich foods, especially whole fruits like oranges, may enhance liver function as an adjunct treatment for MASLD. The notable reduction in liver steatosis prevalence occurred independently of body weight changes.
