2. Magnetic helicity and energy budgets of jet events from an emerging solar active region

Using photospheric vector magnetograms obtained by the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory and a magnetic connectivity-based method, we compute the magnetic helicity and free magnetic energy budgets of a simple bipolar solar active region (AR) during its magnetic flux emergence phase which lasted $\sim$47 hrs. The AR did not produce any coronal mass ejections (CMEs) or flares with an X-ray class above C1.0 but it was the site of 60 jet events during its flux emergence phase. The helicity and free energy budgets of the AR were below established eruption-related thresholds throughout the interval we studied. However, in addition to their slowly-varying evolution, each of the time profiles of the helicity and free energy budgets showed discrete localized peaks, with eight pairs of them occurring at times of jets emanating from the AR. These jets featured larger base areas and longer durations than the other jets of the AR. We estimated, for the first time, the helicity and free magnetic energy changes associated with these eight jets which were in the ranges of $0.5-7.1 \times 10^{40}$ Mx$^2$ and $1.1-6.9 \times 10^{29}$ erg, respectively. Although these values are one to two orders of magnitude smaller than those usually associated with CMEs, the relevant percentage changes were significant and ranged from 13% to 76% for the normalized helicity and from 9% to 57% for the normalized free magnetic energy. Living things enact control of non-equilibrium, dynamical structures through complex biochemical networks, accomplishing spatiotemporally-orchestrated physiological tasks such as cell division, motility, and embryogenesis. While the exact minimal mechanisms needed to replicate these behaviors using synthetic active materials are unknown, controlling the complex, often chaotic, dynamics of active materials is essential to their implementation as engineered life-like materials. Here, we demonstrate the use of external feedback control to regulate and control the spatially-averaged speed of a model active material with time-varying actuation through applied light. We systematically vary the controller parameters to analyze the steady-state flow speed and temporal fluctuations, finding the experimental results in excellent agreement with predictions from both a minimal coarse-grained model and full nematohydrodynamic simulations. Our findings demonstrate that proportional-integral control can effectively regulate the dynamics of active nematics in light of challenges posed by the constituents, such as sample aging, protein aggregation, and sample-to-sample variability. As in living things, deviations of active materials from their steady-state behavior can arise from internal processes and we quantify the important consequences of this coupling on the controlled behavior of the active nematic. Finally, the interaction between the controller and the intrinsic timescales of the active material can induce oscillatory behaviors in a regime of parameter space that qualitatively matches predictions from our model. This work underscores the potential of feedback control in manipulating the complex dynamics of active matter, paving the way for more sophisticated control strategies in the design of responsive, life-like materials.

The progenitor system(s) as well as the explosion mechanism(s) of thermonuclear (Type Ia) supernovae are long-standing issues in astrophysics. Here we present ejecta masses and other physical parameters for 28 recent Type Ia supernovae inferred from multiband photometric and optical spectroscopic data. Our results confirm that the majority of SNe Ia show {\it observable} ejecta masses below the Chandrasekhar-limit (having a mean $M_{\rm ej} \approx 1.1 \pm 0.3$ M$_\odot$), consistent with the predictions of recent sub-M$_{\rm Ch}$ explosion models. They are compatible with models assuming either single- or double-degenerate progenitor configurations. We also recover a sub-sample of supernovae within $1.2 $ M$_\odot$ $< M_{\rm {ej}} < 1.5$ M$_\odot$ that are consistent with near-Chandrasekhar explosions. Taking into account the uncertainties of the inferred ejecta masses, about half of our SNe are compatible with both explosion models. We compare our results with those in previous studies, and discuss the caveats and concerns regarding the applied methodology.

The robotics research field lacks formalized definitions and frameworks for evaluating advanced capabilities including generalizability (the ability for robots to perform tasks under varied contexts) and reproducibility (the performance of a reproduced robot capability in different labs under the same experimental conditions). This paper presents an initial conceptual framework, MIRRER, that unites the concepts of performance evaluation, benchmarking, and reproduced/replicated experimentation in order to facilitate comparable robotics research. 6. Einstein Against Singularities: Analysis versus Geometry

Einstein identified singularities in spacetimes, such as at the Schwarzschild radius, where later relativists only find a coordinate system assigning multiple values to a single spacetime event. These differing judgments derive from differences in mathematical methods. Later relativists employ geometrical structures to correct anomalies in the coordinate systems used in analytic expressions. Einstein took the analytic expressions to be primary and the geometrical structures as mere heuristics that could be overruled if physical assumptions required it. Einstein's non-geometric methods had a firm base in the history of mathematical methods. They continued the non-geometric orientation of Christoffel, Ricci and LeviCivita. Einstein's insistence that singularities must be eliminated marked a departure from earlier tolerance of singularities. It was founded upon his longterm project of eliminating arbitrariness from fundamental physical theories. However, Einstein was willing to theorize with singularities only temporarily if they were the least arbitrary approach then available.

A liderança tem um papel importante na criação de valor, inovação e na articulação de estratégias de implantação da gestão do conhecimento. Das empresas que concordaram participar no estudo, foram obtidas 30 respostas de líderes e gestores de topo. Com o objetivo de identificar e caraterizar a liderança existente nas empresas de saúde estudadas, e tendo por base a revisão da literatura anteriormente realizada, foi elaborado um questionário que depois de adaptado à realidade das empresas de Saúde, foi validado por quatro especialistas da área da gestão estratégica e da área da gestão em saúde. O método para a pesquisa foi o de análise quantitativa, onde foi realizado o estudo de caso através da realização de questionários. Assim, no presente artigo, destacam-se as características e as habilidades relacionadas com a liderança organizacional e quais as características e habilidades necessárias para um líder segundo a opinião de trabalhadores portugueses.

This paper introduces the Pandemic PACT Advanced Categorisation Engine (PPACE) along with its associated dataset. PPACE is a fine-tuned model developed to automatically classify research abstracts from funded biomedical projects according to WHO-aligned research priorities. This task is crucial for monitoring research trends and identifying gaps in global health preparedness and response. Our approach builds on human-annotated projects, which are allocated one or more categories from a predefined list. A large language model is then used to generate `rationales' explaining the reasoning behind these annotations. This augmented data, comprising expert annotations and rationales, is subsequently used to fine-tune a smaller, more efficient model. Developed as part of the Pandemic PACT project, which aims to track and analyse research funding and clinical evidence for a wide range of diseases with outbreak potential, PPACE supports informed decision-making by research funders, policymakers, and independent researchers. We introduce and release both the trained model and the instruction-based dataset used for its training. Our evaluation shows that PPACE significantly outperforms its baselines. The release of PPACE and its associated dataset offers valuable resources for researchers in multilabel biomedical document classification and supports advancements in aligning biomedical research with key global health priorities.

10. Exploring the role of criticality in the quantum Otto cycle fueled by the anisotropic quantum Rabi-Stark model

Quantum heat machines, encompassing heat engines, refrigerators, heaters, and accelerators, represent the forefront of quantum thermodynamics, offering a novel paradigm for converting heat energy into useful mechanical work. Leveraging quantum mechanical principles, these machines promise superior efficiency and performance compared to classical counterparts, with potential applications in renewable energy and quantum computing. This paper investigates a quantum Otto engine operating in both ideal and finite-time scenarios, employing a two-level system interacting with a harmonic oscillator within the framework of the anisotropic quantum Rabi-Stark model (AQRSM) as the working medium. This model is notable for exhibiting both first-order and continuous quantum phase transitions. By focusing on quantum heat engines, our study reveals that these phase transitions critically modulate the efficiency and power of AQRSM-based engines, outperforming quantum engines fueled by working medium with harmonic spectrum. Additionally, we explore the impacts of quantum friction and conduct limit cycle analysis in finite-time operations, providing insights into optimizing quantum heat engines for practical implementation.

11. Bounding Boxes and Probabilistic Graphical Models: Video Anomaly Detection Simplified

In this study, we formulate the task of Video Anomaly Detection as a probabilistic analysis of object bounding boxes. We hypothesize that the representation of objects via their bounding boxes only, can be sufficient to successfully identify anomalous events in a scene. The implied value of this approach is increased object anonymization, faster model training and fewer computational resources. This can particularly benefit applications within video surveillance running on edge devices such as cameras. We design our model based on human reasoning which lends itself to explaining model output in human-understandable terms. Meanwhile, the slowest model trains within less than 7 seconds on a 11th Generation Intel Core i9 Processor. While our approach constitutes a drastic reduction of problem feature space in comparison with prior art, we show that this does not result in a reduction in performance: the results we report are highly competitive on the benchmark datasets CUHK Avenue and ShanghaiTech, and significantly exceed on the latest State-of-the-Art results on StreetScene, which has so far proven to be the most challenging VAD dataset.

The Submillimeter Array (SMA) is an array of 8 antennas operating at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths on Maunakea, Hawaii, operated by the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and Academia Sinica Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics, Taiwan. Over the past several years, we have been preparing a major upgrade to the SMA that will replace the aging original receiver cryostats and receiver cartridges with all new cryostats and new 230 and 345 GHz receiver designs. This wideband upgrade (wSMA) will also include significantly increased instantaneous bandwidth, improved sensitivity, and greater capabilities for dual frequency observations. PLATO (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars) is ESA's M3 mission designed to detect and characterise extrasolar planets and perform asteroseismic monitoring of a large number of stars. PLATO will detect small planets (down to <2 R_(Earth)) around bright stars (<11 mag), including terrestrial planets in the habitable zone of solar-like stars. With the complement of radial velocity observations from the ground, planets will be characterised for their radius, mass, and age with high accuracy (5 %, 10 %, 10 % for an Earth-Sun combination respectively). PLATO will provide us with a large-scale catalogue of well-characterised small planets up to intermediate orbital periods, relevant for a meaningful comparison to planet formation theories and to better understand planet evolution. It will make possible comparative exoplanetology to place our Solar System planets in a broader context. In parallel, PLATO will study (host) stars using asteroseismology, allowing us to determine the stellar properties with high accuracy, substantially enhancing our knowledge of stellar structure and evolution. The payload instrument consists of 26 cameras with 12cm aperture each. For at least four years, the mission will perform high-precision photometric measurements. Here we review the science objectives, present PLATO's target samples and fields, provide an overview of expected core science performance as well as a description of the instrument and the mission profile at the beginning of the serial production of the flight cameras. PLATO is scheduled for a launch date end 2026. This overview therefore provides a summary of the mission to the community in preparation of the upcoming operational phases.

Diffusion probabilistic models have made their way into a number of high-profile applications since their inception. In particular, there has been a wave of research into using diffusion models in the prediction and design of biomolecular structures and sequences. Their growing ubiquity makes it imperative for researchers in these fields to understand them. This paper serves as a general overview for the theory behind these models and the current state of research. We first introduce diffusion models and discuss common motifs used when applying them to biomolecules. We then present the significant outcomes achieved through the application of these models in generative and predictive tasks. Let $R$ be a commutative ring and let $n \geq 1.$ We study $\Gamma(s)$, the generating function and Ann$(s)$, the ideal of characteristic polynomials of $s$, an $n$--dimensional sequence over $R$. We express $f(X_1,\ldots,X_n) \cdot \Gamma(s)(X_1^{-1},\ldots ,X_n^{-1})$ as a partitioned sum. That is, we give (i) a $2^n$--fold ``border'' partition (ii) an explicit expression for the product as a $2^n$--fold sum; the support of each summand is contained in precisely one member of the partition. A key summand is $\beta_0(f,s)$, the ``border polynomial'' of $f$ and $s$, which is divisible by $X_1\cdots X_n$. We say that $s$ is {\em eventually rectilinear} if the elimination ideals Ann$(s)\cap R[X_i]$ contain an $f_i(X_i)$ for $1 \leq i \leq n$. In this case, we show that $\mbox{Ann}(s)$ is the ideal quotient $(\sum_{i=1}^n(f_i)\ :\ \beta_0(f,s)/(X_1\cdots X_n)).$ When $R$ and $R[[X_1,X_2, \ldots ,X_n]]$ are factorial domains (e.g. $R$ a principal ideal domain or ${\Bbb F}[X_1,\ldots,X_n]$), we compute {\em the monic generator} $\gamma _i$ of $\mbox{Ann}(s) \cap R[X_i]$ from known $f_i \in \mbox{Ann}(s) \cap R[X_i]$ or from a finite number of $1$--dimensional linear recurring sequences over $R$. 17. Linking Structures across Logic and Space: The Role of Euler Diagrams

- Abstract
This theoretical article explores the affordances and challenges of Euler diagrams as tools for supporting undergraduate introduction-to-proof students to make sense of, and reason about, logical implications. To theoretically frame students' meaning making with Euler diagrams, we introduce the notion of logico-spatial linked structuring (or LSLS). We argue that students' use of Euler diagrams as representations of logical statements entails a conceptual linking between spatial and non-spatial representations, and the LSLS framework provides a tool for modeling this conceptual linking. Moreover, from our Piagetian epistemological perspective, reasoning with Euler diagrams entails engaging in spatial mental operations and making a logical conclusion from the result. We illustrate the utility of the LSLS framework through examples with two undergraduate students as they reasoned about the truth of the converse and contrapositive of a given logical implication, and we identify specific spatial operations that they used and coordinated in their problem solving.

- Abstract
This brief article summarizes five trends and issues discussed during a moderated panel and round table discussion at the Association for Experiential Education (AEE) Symposium on Experiential Education Research (SEER) in November 2023. The aim of this session was to expand on prior documented trends and disseminate current experiential and outdoor education (EOE) trends, issues, and related research. These are only a few of the many EOE trends and issues but they represent both meta trends/issues and program-specific trends. This session was designed for scholars and practitioners who teach, provide program administration, and/or conduct research and evaluation efforts for EOE and related disciplines. Topics included cultural representation in the outdoors, trauma and mental health trends, safety II: a new view of risk management, nature and outdoor programming, and whether college outdoor orientation leaders should be paid. We hope that you, the reader, are inspired to consider what trends and issues are impacting your work and explore areas for future research.

INTRODUCTION: The LIfestyle for BRAin Health (LIBRA) index yields a dementia risk score based on modifiable lifestyle factors and is validated in Western samples. We investigated whether the association between LIBRA scores and incident dementia is moderated by geographical location or sociodemographic characteristics. METHODS: We combined data from 21 prospective cohorts across six continents (N = 31,680) and conducted cohort-specific Cox proportional hazard regression analyses in a two-step individual participant data meta-analysis. RESULTS: A one-standard-deviation increase in LIBRA score was associated with a 21% higher risk for dementia. The association was stronger for Asian cohorts compared to European cohorts, and for individuals aged ≤75 years (vs older), though only within the first 5 years of follow-up. No interactions with sex, education, or socioeconomic position were observed. DISCUSSION: Modifiable risk and protective factors appear relevant for dementia risk reduction across diverse geographical and sociodemographic groups. HIGHLIGHTS: A two-step individual participant data meta-analysis was conducted. This was done at a global scale using data from 21 ethno-regionally diverse cohorts. The association between a modifiable dementia risk score and dementia was examined. The association was modified by geographical region and age at baseline. Yet, modifiable dementia risk and protective factors appear relevant in all investigated groups and regions.

Nucleotide changes in gene regulatory elements are important determinants of neuronal development and diseases. Using massively parallel reporter assays in primary human cells from mid-gestation cortex and cerebral organoids, we interrogated the cis-regulatory activity of 102,767 open chromatin regions, including thousands of sequences with cell type-specific accessibility and variants associated with brain gene regulation. In primary cells, we identified 46,802 active enhancer sequences and 164 variants that alter enhancer activity. Activity was comparable in organoids and primary cells, suggesting that organoids provide an adequate model for the developing cortex. Using deep learning we decoded the sequence basis and upstream regulators of enhancer activity. This work establishes a comprehensive catalog of functional gene regulatory elements and variants in human neuronal development.

Here we present a continuation of the work that was based on video observations of the Tau Her 2022 outburst from the McDonald Observatory, Texas, US. On the night of the maximum in 2022 we detected 626 individual Tau Her meteors, for which we estimated photovisual magnitudes and analysed their distribution on the sky to determine the radiant position in an innovative way. The derived population index is $5.56 \pm 1.83$, while the radiant position for the mid-time of the observations is: $\mathrm{RA} = 209.71 ^\circ \pm 1.01 ^\circ$, $\mathrm{Dec} = 27.73 ^\circ \pm 0.07 ^\circ$. Both measurements are in good agreement with other results in the literature, although our population index seems to be higher than most of the published values. We speculate this might be due to the higher sensitivity of our equipment to fainter meteors.

As part of an intensive effort to observe the predicted 2022 Tau Herculids outburst, we recorded almost 800 individual meteor streaks on May 30th and 31st, 2022, using a high-sensitivity Sony~$\alpha$7 camera. The video recordings were obtained under perfect conditions at the McDonald Observatory, Texas, USA. The meteor sample is dominated by the predicted Tau Herculids shower, however, we also noted significant activity of sporadic meteors and other possible weak showers. We found that the time of the maximum activity matched very well the predictions, while we note the large fraction of faint meteors that were not detectable visually. We determined the radiant, and the time evolution of the activities and currently we are working on the determination of the brightness statistics.

Language models that can learn a task at inference time, called in-context learning (ICL), show increasing promise in natural language inference tasks. In ICL, a model user constructs a prompt to describe a task with a natural language instruction and zero or more examples, called demonstrations. The prompt is then input to the language model to generate a completion. In this paper, we apply ICL to the design and evaluation of satisfaction arguments, which describe how a requirement is satisfied by a system specification and associated domain knowledge. The approach builds on three prompt design patterns, including augmented generation, prompt tuning, and chain-of-thought prompting, and is evaluated on a privacy problem to check whether a mobile app scenario and associated design description satisfies eight consent requirements from the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The overall results show that GPT-4 can be used to verify requirements satisfaction with 96.7% accuracy and dissatisfaction with 93.2% accuracy. Inverting the requirement improves verification of dissatisfaction to 97.2%. Chain-of-thought prompting improves overall GPT-3.5 performance by 9.0% accuracy. We discuss the trade-offs among templates, models and prompt strategies and provide a detailed analysis of the generated specifications to inform how the approach can be applied in practice.

Cyclic classical and quantum thermal machines show higher efficiency when the strokes are carried out quasi-statically. Recent theoretical and experimental work on figures of merit for thermal machines show that they have an advantage when operating in environments with negative temperatures. In an experimental proof of concept [Phys. Rev. Lett. 122, 240602 (2019)], it was shown that quantum Otto engines operating at negative temperatures can exhibit a behavior in which the faster the cycle is carried out, the higher the efficiency. We study two types of surface observables $-$ the $\mathbf{Q}$-observables and the $\mathbf{H}$-observables $-$ of the 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ $A_1$-quiver $U(N)$ gauge theory obtained by coupling a 2d $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ gauged linear sigma model. We demonstrate that the transition between the two surface defects manifests as a Fourier transformation between the surface observables. Utilizing the results from our previous works, which establish that the $\mathbf{Q}$-observables and the $\mathbf{H}$-observables give rise, respectively, to the $Q$-operators on the evaluation module over the Yangian $Y(\mathfrak{gl}(2))$ and the Hecke operators on the twisted $\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}(N)$-coinvariants, we derive an exact duality between the spectral problems of the $\mathfrak{gl}(2)$ XXX spin chain with $N$ sites and the $\mathfrak{sl}(N)$ Gaudin model with 4 sites, both of which are defined on bi-infinite modules. Moreover, we present a dual description of the monodromy surface defect as coupling a 2d $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ gauged linear sigma model. Employing this dual perspective, we demonstrate how the monodromy surface defect undergoes a transition to multiple $\mathbf{Q}$-observables or $\mathbf{H}$-observables, implemented through integral transformations between their surface observables. These transformations provide, respectively, $\hbar$-deformation and a higher-rank generalization of the KZ/BPZ correspondence. We present a scheme that utilizes an ion confined within a bi-dimensional trap to simulate a quantum Otto heat engine whose working substance is a two-level system. In this scheme, the electronic component of the ion (the two-level system) can interact with effective heat reservoirs of different types. We specifically focus on effective thermal reservoirs (those with positive temperatures), effective heat reservoirs with apparent negative temperatures, and effective squeezed thermal reservoirs. We show how to generate these effective reservoirs and provide numerical results to illustrate the applicability of the presented scheme. Finally, considering the same types of effective heat reservoirs, we briefly discuss the simulation of a quantum Otto heat engine where a quantum harmonic oscillator serves as the working substance.

The decay of sunspot plays a key role in magnetic flux transportation in solar active regions (ARs). To better understand the physical mechanism of the entire decay process of a sunspot, an {\alpha}-configuration sunspot in AR NOAA 12411 was studied. Based on the continuum intensity images and vector magnetic field data with stray light correction from Solar Dynamics Observatory/Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager, the area, vector magnetic field and magnetic flux in the umbra and penumbra are calculated with time, respectively. Our main results are as follows: (1) The decay curves of the sunspot area in its umbra, penumbra, and whole sunspot take the appearance of Gaussian profiles. The area decay rates of the umbra, penumbra and whole sunspot are -1.56 MSH/day, -12.61 MSH/day and -14.04 MSH/day, respectively; (2) With the decay of the sunspot, the total magnetic field strength and the vertical component of the penumbra increase, and the magnetic field of the penumbra becomes more vertical. Meanwhile, the total magnetic field strength and vertical magnetic field strength for the umbra decrease, and the inclination angle changes slightly with an average value of about 20{\deg}; (3) The magnetic flux decay curves of the sunspot in its umbra, penumbra, and whole sunspot exhibit quadratic patterns, their magnetic flux decay rates of the umbra, penumbra and whole sunspot are -9.84 * 10^19 Mx/day, -1.59 * 10^20 Mx/day and -2.60 * 10^20 Mx/day , respectively. The observation suggests that the penumbra may be transformed into the umbra, resulting in the increase of the average vertical magnetic field strength and the reduction of the inclination angle in the penumbra during the decay of the sunspot.

We aim to investigate the nature of time-variable X-ray sources detected in the {\it XMM-Newton} serendipitous survey. The X-ray light curves of objects in the {\it XMM-Newton} serendipitous survey were searched for variability and coincident serendipitous sources observed by {\it Chandra} were also investigated. Subsequent infrared spectroscopy of the counterparts to the X-ray objects that were identified using UKIDSS was carried out using {\it ISAAC} on the VLT. We found that the object 4XMM~J182531.5--144036 detected in the {\it XMM-Newton} serendipitous survey in April 2008 was also detected by {\it Chandra} as CXOU~J182531.4--144036 in July 2004. Both observations reveal a hard X-ray source displaying a coherent X-ray pulsation at a period of 781~s. The source position is coincident with a $K=14$ mag infrared object whose spectrum exhibits strong HeI and Br$\gamma$ emission lines and an infrared excess above that of early B-type dwarf or giant stars. We conclude that 4XMM~J182531.5--144036 is a Be/X-ray binary pulsar exhibiting persistent X-ray emission and is likely in a long period, low eccentricity orbit, similar to X Per., Comment: 6 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in Publications of the Astronomical Society of Australia

OBJECTIVES: Determine the incremental diagnostic yield of prenatal exome sequencing (pES) over chromosome microarray (CMA) or G-banding karyotype in fetuses with central nervous system (CNS) abnormalities. METHODS: Data were collected via electronic searches from January 2010 to April 2022 in MEDLINE, Cochrane, Web of Science and EMBASE. The NHS England prenatal exome cohort was also included. Incremental yield was calculated as a pooled value using a random-effects model. RESULTS: Thirty studies were included (n = 1583 cases). The incremental yield with pES for any CNS anomaly was 32% [95%CI 27%-36%; I2 = 72%]. Subgroup analysis revealed apparent incremental yields in; (a) isolated CNS anomalies; 27% [95%CI 19%-34%; I2 = 74%]; (b) single CNS anomaly; 16% [95% CI 10%-23%; I2 = 41%]; (c) more than one CNS anomaly; 31% [95% Cl 21%-40%; I2 = 56%]; and (d) the anatomical subtype with the most optimal yield was Type 1 malformation of cortical development, related to abnormal cell proliferation or apoptosis, incorporating microcephalies, megalencephalies and dysplasia; 40% (22%-57%; I2 = 68%). The commonest syndromes in isolated cases were Lissencephaly 3 and X-linked hydrocephalus. CONCLUSIONS: Prenatal exome sequencing provides a high incremental diagnostic yield in fetuses with CNS abnormalities with optimal yields in cases with multiple CNS anomalies, particularly those affecting the midline, posterior fossa and cortex.

We construct integrable systems based on new dimer graphs obtained from modification of hexagon dimer diagram. We study the gauge theories in correspondence to the newly proposed integrable systems. By examining three types of defects -- a line defect, a canonical co-dimensional two defect and a monodromy defect -- in five-dimensional gauge theory with $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetry and $\Omega_{\varepsilon_1,\varepsilon_2}$-background. We identify, in the $\varepsilon_2 \to 0$ limit, the canonical co-dimensional two defect satisfying the Baxter T-Q equation of the generalized $A$-type dimer integrable system, and the monodromy defect as its common eigenstate of the commuting Hamiltonians, with the eigenvalues being the expectation value of the BPS Wilson loop in the anti-symmetric representation of the bulk gauge group., Comment: 45+13 pages, 12 figures, correct typos, add citation

Starting from the observing campaign in April 2018, the Greenland Telescope (GLT) has been added as a new station of the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) array. Visibilities on baselines to the GLT, particularly in the North-South direction, potentially provide valuable new constraints for the modeling and imaging of sources such as M87*. The GLT's location at high Northern latitudes adds unique challenges to its calibration strategies. Additionally, the performance of the GLT was not optimal during the 2018 observations due to it being only partially commissioned at the time. This document describes the steps taken to estimate the various parameters (and their uncertainties) required for the absolute flux calibration of the GLT data as part of the EHT. 45. A quantum Otto-type heat engine with fixed frequency

In this work, we analyze an Otto-type cycle operating with a working substance composed of a quantum harmonic oscillator (QHO). Unlike other studies in which the work extraction is done by varying the frequency of the QHO and letting it thermalize with a squeezed reservoir, here we submit the QHO to a parametric pumping controlled by the squeezing parameter and let it thermalize with a thermal reservoir. We then investigate the role of the squeezing parameter in our Otto-type engine powered by parametric pumping and show that it is possible to reach the Carnot limit by arbitrarily increasing the squeezing parameter. Notably, for certain squeezing parameters $r$, e.g. $r=0.4$, the quasi-static Otto limit can be reached even at non-zero power. We also investigated the role of entropy production in the efficiency behavior during the unitary strokes, showing that positive (negative) changes in entropy production correspond to increases (decreases) in engine efficiency, as expected. Furthermore, we show that under thermal reservoirs a work extraction process that is more efficient than the Carnot engine is impossible, regardless of the quantum resource introduced via the Hamiltonian of the system., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

46. Exploring the Challenges of Learning Quadratic Equations and Reflecting upon Curriculum Structure and Implementation

- Abstract
An important topic of study in secondary mathematics is non-linear functions, including quadratic equations. In this study, findings from 25 Year 11 students indicated that difficulties with critical prerequisite concepts such as algebraic conventions impeded students' success in understanding and working with quadratics. Analysis of student errors identified misconceptions associated with the null factor law, and the nature of quadratic equations. This paper proposes that these findings are a result of limited timeframes nominated for learning quadratic topics outlined in the enacted curriculum. The implication of this is that the enactment of the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics F-10 did not support the development of conceptual understanding or procedural fluency with key mathematical concepts for these students. Without purposeful attention to prerequisite knowledge, and suitable time allocated to develop understanding and fluency, students' proficiency with topics such as quadratics is negatively influenced. A mastery approach to the hierarchically organised curriculum is supported by findings of this study.
